Zuva Gallery Summer is an excellent time to explore the Valley’s lesser-known art galleries. LocalLily.com Art and Architecture contributor Andrea Merican recently took a trip up to Carefree Highway and Scottsdale Road to walk around the beautiful marketplace of El Pedregal at the Boulders. Zuva specializes in museum-quality contemporary African art. 20 largescale outdoor sculptures are on display in the courtyard. Inside, the gallery offers a beautiful collection of paintings and sculpture that promote a greater understating of Africa and its people through charitable exhibitions. The gallery owners travel to Africa every year to discover new artists and bring inspired works back to the gallery for display.

special “They Put It Out There” made its debut on Comedy Central in the fall of last year. The new special was taped at the Margaret A. The DVD “They Put It Out There” made its nationwide release shortly after its TV air date. Pablo once again hits his mark, weaving together his one of a kind arsenal of characters, spontaneous outbursts, spot on impressions and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff. “They Put It Out There” is an entertaining and off-thewall performance that delivers the laughs and points out the hilarious absurdities in an illogical, pop-culture obsessed world.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Rated PG-13 NOW PLAYING Amsterdam. His phenomenal performance at the Troxy in London, sold over 26,000 tickets during his third 16 city tour of Sweden. Francisco’s international profile continues to soar as his anxious European fans await his return for yet another multicountry tour slated for next year. Gene Lavanchy of FOX – TV Boston calls Pablo “the most talented comedian in the business today”. His unbelievable ability to physically morph himself into movie stars, singers, friends, family, and a multitude of nationalities gives Pablo’s show a universal charm. His drop-dead funny spoofing often leaves his audiences struggling to catch their breath which is the driving force behind his huge success.

is a return to Cirque du Soleil’s roots, combining classic circus acrobatics and broad slapstick clowning. John’s dilemma is not helped much when upstairs neighbor, Stanley, who knows the truth, tries to help and only makes matters worse. Michael G. Smith Michael Smith speaks about KOOZA with great passion, vigor and enthusiasm. As he should, as KOOZA is not his first rodeo, having previously directed other Cirque success stories, including “Dralion”, “Alegria”, “Varekai” and even the $2 Billion “The House of Dancing Water”, the world’s largest water show in Macau.

And now you have a chance to see KOOZA, (which means “treasure in a box”), the stunning Big-Top style, acrobatic and clown extravaganza that has thrilled about 4 million people in North America so far. Smith explains, “The show brings Cirque back to its roots when the Big Top ruled and street performers comprised (and still do) the somewhat delinquent cast.” And don’t make the mistake of thinking you can see it next year because once KOOZA hits Phoenix and 3 more cities, it will go to Europe for two years. That’s it. No more KOOZA. So, see it now.

KOOZA is not warmed over acts from past Vegas shows for those Cirque veterans that may be wondering if they’ve seen it all before. “The show is all new, and different, with performances such as the “Wheel of Death” and other innovative trapeze and high-wire thrills,” said Smith. Guitarist/Composer Stephane Wrembel Releases New Album, Origins

June 7th, 2012 - June 13th, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

To say that Wrembel—who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside of Fontainebleau— has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement.

But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. Presciently titled, Origins, which Wrembel recorded with his band— bassist Dave Speranza, rhythm guitarist Roy Williams, drummer Nick Anderson and percussionist David Langlois—finds the multifaceted musician corralling all of his myriad influences into a hybrid that simultaneously reflects where he’s been and points to where he’s headed. Although he built his reputation as a stylist in the mode of the iconic French Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wrembel now revels in transcending and expanding. “I’m digging deeper and deeper into my roots,” he says about the album. Origins touches upon everything from blues to flamenco to rock; all of these influences come together as something identifiable only as Stephane Wrembel. ‘Bel Ami’ A chronicle of a young man’s (Robert Pattinson) rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women (Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci). Colm Meaney also stars. (R – 102 minutes)

‘Bill W.’ Interviews, recreations and rare archival material reveal how William G. Wilson – a hopeless drunk near death from his alcoholism – found a way out of his own addiction and then forged a path for countless others to follow as co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. (NR – 104 minutes) Joseph: “Though not inherently entertaining, ‘Bill W.’ is an extremely educational and incredibly insightful documentary. Filmmakers Dan Carracino and Kevin Hanlon have made a movie that will touch anyone and everyone who has ever crossed paths with addiction. When they could have easily gotten by with the bare minimum and wound up with a flick that belonged in treatment centers, they instead performed extensive research and developed a motion picture that is sincerely worthy of its subject.” Grade: C

Joseph: “For a movie with a tagline about being possessed by love and consumed by desire, ‘Bel Ami’ keeps viewers at an unusually indifferent distance. That is to say that it is hard to get a reading on any of the characters in the new romantic drama based on a 19th-century novel written by Guy de Maupassant. This is through no fault of the adept actors and is instead due to screenwriter Rachel Bennette’s seemingly pointless interpretation of this tale in which the core character fails to learn the error of his ways.” Grade: D

‘Blocked’ A man (Mario Guzman) dreads his 20-year high school reunion. Not because he married the prom queen. Not because he was successful, but because an old blood feud has caught

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

up to him and his wife Julie (Tiffany Shepis) on their favorite online social network. (NR – 84 minutes) Joseph: “There is no doubt that filmmaker James Arnett has an expert eye for visually stimulating cinema. He simply has not stumbled upon the right material through which he can funnel that eye. Though far from a fantastic failure, ‘Blocked’ is a quintessential example of a motion picture that possesses style but not substance. The new noir looks amazing but its story simply is not very interesting. Once you factor in the flick’s atrocious acting and predictable plot twists, the success of that style is suddenly no longer cause for celebration.” Grade: D

‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’ Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman (David Schwimmer) are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover – a traveling circus. (PG – 100 minutes) Stan: “Full of clever innuendo and

by Stan Robinson

references to various current events of the day, ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’ has that appeal to the adults while straddling the ‘proverbial’ fence as it delivers the ‘enchantment’ factor and the strength of friendships for younger viewers with song & dance in a colorful 3D presentation.” Grade: B Joseph: “Unfortunately, unlike Pixar’s ‘Toy Story’ franchise, DreamWorks’ ‘Madagascar’ franchise has not grown up with its fans. In fact, the franchise has done the exact opposite of that. The latest installment – dubbed ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’ - centers around a circus of all things. Needless to say, sentimentality is low on this threequel’s list of priorities. Having said that, frivolous fun is first on said list, giving viewers – regardless of their age – an opportunity to tap into the imaginative amusement associated with youth.” Grade: C

‘Mansome’ A documentary that explores the question: In the age of manscaping, metrosexuals and grooming products galore – what does it mean to be a man? (PG-13 – 82 minutes)

Randy: “Morgan Spurlock documented his journey to find funding for his previous documentary ‘The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.’ Having previously made several critically acclaimed films, even this promising director proved funding a film is no easy task. If those previous funders have a chance to see his latest project ‘Mansome,’ they may just ask for their money back. With no clear focus and time wasted capturing Jason Bateman and Will Arnett bathing together talking about their grooming habits, ‘Mansome’ may be the greatest waste of time ever.” Grade: D

‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Two 12-year-olds who fall in love on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965 make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing offshore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way. (PG-13 – 97 minutes) Randy: “Having never really understood Wes Anderson’s sense of humor, I can easily say I had not been a big fan of his work. It seems

to be that ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ may have changed my mind. A great storyline, likeable characters and an unexplainable charm has made me a huge fan. Quirky as always, Anderson and co-writer Roman Coppola have created a modern day classic that should charm even the biggest of Anderson skeptics. The film has a fairy-tale like quality to it that adds to the overall atmosphere. A round of applause at the screening I attended signals what could easily be the sleeper hit of the summer.” Grade: A

Antonio Banderas, the voice of Puss in the movie ‘Puss in Boots’, shares a number of skills with his on screen counterpart and can wield a sword, a skill he learned while portraying Zorro in two films!

‘Prometheus’ A team of explorers (Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce) discovers a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. (R – 124 minutes) Stan: “Presenting the ultimate challenge for movie reviewers of ‘not giving spoilers’ that dampen or hinder the ‘first time’ viewing experience of a moviegoer, suffice it to say director Ridley Scott, who delivered the first ‘food for thought’ for human kind and deep space travel encounters in ‘Alien’ (1979), ‘Prometheus’presents

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

yet another key with possible answers, and more questions, as the quest for that ultimate answer of the origins of mankind on Earth continues...” Grade: B+

The new dramatic thriller – which, as the title credits state, was shot, cut and scored by Rohit Colin Rao – is an interesting experiment but one that will either put the viewer to sleep or prompt them to exit the movie theater faster than the speed of sound (which, by the way, is 768 mph). There is independent filmmaking and then there is inarticulate filmmaking. This is the latter.” Grade: F

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of motion picture projects past and present.

(R – 90 minutes) Stan: “Although set with a viable premise for exploration and story telling, one gets the sense of ‘Too much unbridled creative control’ is the result of the ‘Shot, cut and scored by Rohit Colin Rao’ screen credit that is boldly prominent, as the theme slowly fades out as the screen goes to black…” Grade: D+ Joseph: “It is unlikely that ‘Ultrasonic’ will be music to

Heartsick over sons, husbands and fathers lost to previous flare-ups, women in a remote village where the church and the mosque stand side by side unite to distract their men with clever ruses in an effort to keep their blowhard men from starting a religious war. (PG-13 – 110 minutes) Stan: “A setting in a Lebanese village, the thought of peaceful coexistence between religions, and a view of the men who slowly and certainly aggressively, escalate the ‘perceived’ righteousness of each of their views, is aptly presented with a touch of humor by co-writer and director Nadine Labaki as the Christian and Muslim men in the village, mirror the views of countries on Earth with their earnest and detrimental fervor…” Grade: C+

Filmmakers Dan Carracino and Kevin Hanlon (‘Bill W.’) By Joseph J. Airdo “When all was said and done, the thing that surprised me most of all was the depth of the sacrifice that Bill Wilson had made on behalf of Alcoholics Anonymous. I was really surprised to see the demands that were placed on him and the toll that it took on him. I think that even most Alcoholics Anonymous members are probably not aware of the degree to which he gave up his personal life for the benefit of other people. “When you really start to read the correspondence and see the nittygritty of this stuff that he was up against, it is really amazing how daunting the task that he was faced with was and how many times over he was asked – if not directly then just by circumstances – to sacrifice

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“You read these histories and, at first glance, there is this sense that all Bill Wilson wanted to focus on was helping others in Alcoholics Anonymous and that he is delighted to do it. But even as early as just a few years into it, he is writing about how he expects to be out of it within the next year. He actually negotiated an agreement with the foundation board that he was going to step down. It happened again and again and again. “It was a recurring theme for him. Even when he officially stepped down, he wrote to somebody and asked, ‘Should I take another year or two?’ He ended up taking another 10 years to really be done with everything that

he wanted to do. And even then, as this person with this status within Alcoholics Anonymous, he was never free of it. He always answered the call. He was a really remarkable man.” – Dan Carracino

THE $35,000 SUPERSTAR By Brian Mulligan Superstars don’t grow on trees and they certainly don’t usually cost $35,000 but don’t tell that to Paul Reddam, the owner of the new super kid on the block, Preakness Stakes hero I’ll Have Another. Fans should take nothing away from Bob Baffert’s student Bodemeister’s fine effort, but the truth of the matter is that he had everything his own way on the front end and still could not close the deal. Bought for Reddam by trainer Doug O’Neill’s brother Dennis for just $35,000, but they figured to pay much more for I’ll Have Another and this runner just fell through the cracks on the day of the sales. After the Preakness win, I’ll Have Another ran his bankroll to $2,693,600 and has to be considered a legit threat to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown. On paper, it looked like Bode was going to get an easy uncontested lead in the Preakness and that is exactly what happened for the most part. He cruised to the front and posted a half mile of :47.68, the slowest Preakness half since 1982 when Aloma’s Ruler went :48 and kept going to the wire to win the Preakness. The Beyers of 109 for both Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another are excellent considering the surface at Pimlico on Saturday was relatively slow. As for what is next, I’ll Have Another already has shipped to New York for the Belmont Stakes on June 9. O’Neill wanted to avoid the crazy New York traffic and he also got to Maryland right on top of the Derby so that worked out pretty well. Bodemeister will not run the Belmont

June 7th, 2012 - June 13th, 2012 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Baffert will be represented in the Belmont by Paynter, who won an allowance race on the Preakness undercard over 5 rivals by nearly 6 lengths with a 106 Beyer. This guy is improving and although he has speed, he doesn’t need the lead to win. Kentucky Derby show horse Dullahan will likely start in the Belmont as will Union Rags, Atigun, Alpha, Five Sixteen, Guyana Star Dweej, Street Life, and Unstoppable U. One of the questions leading up to the Belmont will be can I’ll Have Another get the demanding mile and a half distance of final leg of the Triple Crown? His sire Flower Alley was a Grade 1 winner, won at 8 furlongs, handled any kind of going and he ran well at a mile and a quarter, losing by just a length in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. I’ll Have Another’s dam only ran once, and she won that sprint. The dam dropped Those Wer the Days, who lost his debut was 2nd on a sloppy surface, but won the rest of his races including a route going away by 5. Sibling When Willy Win won several routes in the minor leagues and was only out of the money 3 times in his 15-race career. The way I’ll Have Another has been galloping out after his recent wins suggests he will have little problem with the Belmont Stakes distance. You don’t want to have to come from left field in the Belmont and he has enough speed to maintain contact. The mile and a half Belmont Stakes is referred to as the Test of Champions but each of the stops on the Triple Crown trail brings a unique perspective for the fans.

Tradition is steep when talking the Belmont Stakes. The filly Ruthless won the first running in 1867 at Jerome Park. Count Fleet completed his Triple Crown quest taking the 1943 edition winning by 25 lengths. It was the largest margin of victory until Secretariat set the record of 2:24 winning off by 31 in 1973. What makes the 1973 timing so incredible is that it was a full 2 seconds faster than the next fastest set by New York’s own Easy Goer in 1989. Risen Star, A.P. Indy and Point Given posted the 3 next fastest Belmonts. And Affirmed has the sixth fastest Belmont Stakes at 2:26 4/5. Humble is a word not often used with professional athletes but don’t tell that to I’ll Have Another’s rider Mario Gutierrez after the Preakness, Super Mario: “This is not about me. We talked about it with Mr. Reddam and Mr. O’Neill. We wanted to be a little closer to Bodemeister this time because normally that horse runs a huge race. My horse has a tremendous kick in the end. He has been proving that in the last three races. He didn’t disappoint again today. I want to put the pressure a little bit on the side because the credit he earned all this. He has proven a lot of people wrong. I just have to prepare because I want to be at the same level as him. He’s an amazing horse.” You don’t hear anything about a ‘I did this or I moved at the right time, or like Dwight Howard would have said, ‘I want to be traded.’ No you hear a young man that is showing maturity beyond his years and trainer O’Neill will give him the opportunity to get several races over the Belmont strip before the Belmont. Expect Mario to come to New York days and maybe weeks ahead to get a feel of the tricky Belmont surface, which is huge and often confusing. By the time race day comes, Mario will know every inch on the track. When the smoke clears after the Belmont Stakes, the feeling is that I’ll Have Another will put himself into the record books as a Triple Crown hero with Dullahan, Optimizer and Union Rags filling out the trifecta - Good luck. Food Network, which allows him to gather his clan and friends to cook and eat, while teaching overscheduled families to break out of what he calls the “nugget rut” and create quick, inexpensive and healthy meals that even the littlest members of the family will enjoy. “It’s most important to me to be the best husband and father that I can be, and it really changed our routine when Jack and Matthew were born,” Deen explains, “So we have tips and tricks for everybody to make dinnertime not only an easier part of their day but also the most enjoyable.” Filmed on Savannah’s Tybee Island, “Home for Dinner” features the entire Deen clan, including Brooke and the boys, Paula, and her other son Bobby, lending a hand in the kitchen. And Jamie wouldn’t have it any other way.

As the son of Southern cooking’s grande dame Paula Deen – and now her partner in the iconic Savannah, Ga., eatery The Lady and Sons – Jamie Deen knows all about good food. So when it came time to ask for his now-wife Brooke’s hand in marriage, Deen went to his kitchen and whipped up ... egg salad. “Egg salad is her favorite thing to eat on,” he says, laughing. “People know my family’s history – and I’ve been so fortunate to travel and eat everywhere – but I made egg salad for my wife on the night that she said she’d marry me. So if people don’t understand that we mean it when say we’re plain folks, they only have to hear my engagement-night menu to know we appreciate the simpler things in life!” It’s that family philosophy that led Deen to create “Home for Dinner With Jamie Deen,” premiering Saturday, June 16, on

Tucked away in an Ahwatukee shopping plaza is a secret gem. The restaurant, Secreto (4232 E. Chandler Blvd., Phoenix, 480706-2200) was started by some of the same passionate foods minds as the local restaurateurs behind Richardson’s, Dick’s Hideway and Rokerij. www.secretophoenix.com The ambiance is dark and quiet with big benches and pillows to tuck into while enjoying a glass of wine and conversation with friends. A few appetizers not to miss are the bacon wrapped shrimp with four different dipping sauces and the spicy crab cakes. Make no mistake, the house special habanero sauce is tasty, but super spicy and not for the faint palette. The dinner menu is a savory blend of traditional New Mexican fare like Carne Adovada, and green chili plates with a few higher end dishes including rack of lamb and filet mignon. I highly suggest you try the stacked enchiladas made with truly the best chorizo I’ve ever tasted, topped with a perfectly fried egg. Lesser know is the savory brunch menu including items like Rellenos and eggs, Benedict with Jalepeno Hollandaise and a full bar to wash it down. Secreto is cool cozy spot to slip into your summer. Massage in the Vineyard As we ease into summer temperatures I tend to gravitate away from big bold red wines and toward dry roses and crisp acidic white wines. I want to spend time outdoors enjoying the weather and a cool refreshing beverage helps. I’ve got another suggestion to help you enjoy the outdoors, your wine and to relax. Start by getting the hell out of Phoenix and head up north to Verde Valley Wine Country. Next, head over to Page Spring Cellars and get a hold of Shawna Giraro and book a massage in the vineyard. www. MassageInTheVineyard.com. If you are taking turns with a loved one, you can relax on the deck overlooking Oak Creek under the shade of giant Cottonwood trees and enjoy a cool breeze while you are waiting your turn. If it is your turn, like it was mine

last weekend, then you can enjoy an incredible massage in a fully enclosed private creek side cabana with a view to the creek and the sound of light rapids to relax you. There was a perfect gentle breeze. Lemongrass essential oil was added to the massage oil to bring another one of the senses to the party and add another dimension to the massage. Cold massage stones right out of an ice bath are a brisk addition that is especially nice on the warmer days. The ability to walk twelve steps away to the aforementioned deck and enjoy a cold crisp glass of Malvasia Bianca directly after your massage is another bonus. And that is one way to enjoy a glass of wine on a hot summer afternoon‌ By Josh Moffitt ArizonaLandBaron.com

“A lot of recent films seem unsatisfied unless they can add final scenes that redefine the reality of everything that has gone before; call it the Keyser Söze syndrome.” – Roger Ebert Port, chocolate, and cigars: the dessert of high-rollers and Mafiosi, of politicians and wannabes. This dessert, the pinnacle of decadence, is a sort of false atonement for those walking the fine line between grace and folly. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with Keyser Söze, he is the mastermind villain in the movie “The Usual

Suspects.” His real identity is not discovered until the final scene of the film, redefining the entire storyline, hence the above quote from Roger Ebert. So, my recommendation to you is to have a Keyser Söze moment of your own. Maybe you’re a healthnut or a minimum-wage worker or a starving artist or all three. The point is: redefine yourself and your day for a moment. Kickback, uncork some Lightning Ridge Cellars’ “Afterglow,” unwrap some dark chocolate, and—if you so choose—a cigar. Enjoy the sunset with a good pal and dream about all the good days to come. There are many. By Nate Brugnone nathan@azwinemakers.com

RECAP: FnB Meet the Winemaker Series Unfortunately, by the time you read this post, the FnB “Meet the Winemaker” series will have ended. But don’t despair; this series happens every year, with slight revisions. If you haven’t been to FnB, or Baratin, its sister casual component, you are missing out! If you want to experience the ultimate in “farm to table” and “grape to glass,” you must visit! Every year owners Pavle Milic and Chef CharleenBadman bring Arizona’s best and brightest and showcase their wine. Ten to fourteen consecutive winemaker dinners are held at either location (depending on the space needed) and wines are beautifully paired with locally farmed goods. This year we attended the Caduceus and Merkin Vineyards dinner featuring the wines of rock star Maynard James Keenan, of Tool, Perfect Circle and Puscifer… and, yes, he was there. There weren’t hundreds of screaming fans, but instead a great group of oenophiles who appreciate fine wine. Our table even got a special taste of the Oneste, his latest Merlot and Barbera blend (available only at the tasting room… yum!).

Doug Pike lives in Scottsdale and is a 20-year member of the National Cartoonists Society. He is the author of Gone With The Wine, The Grapes of Laugh, and the co-author, with Harry Margulies, of Less Than A Full Deck.

We also enjoyed Arizona’s newcomer, Sand-Reckoner, led by husband and wife, Rob and Sarah Hammelman. Rob is a very talented winemaker and Arizona is lucky to have him. If you haven’t had any Sand-Reckoner wines, head down to AZ Wine Merchants (next to Baratin) and go pick up a bottle of their Malvasia (dry, floral white), rosé (as featured in Phoenix Magazine) and their just

released “2” (Sangiovese and Syrah blend). You can’t go wrong with any choice! When you see these dinners on the calendar next year, sign up for as many as you can fit in your schedule. At $45 a person, you can’t find a better value, better food or better wines. And, what better opportunity to MEET THE WINEMAKER! Analog Man is Joe Walsh’s first solo album in 20 years. In case you haven’t heard, Joe Walsh released his first solo album in two decades two days ago. Analog Man is both modern and timelessly soulful, packed with Walsh’s beloved wit, charm and chops; it delivers an incredibly raw and intimate sound. The 10-track album was produced by Jeff Lynne and Joe Walsh with Tommy Lee James co-writing some of the tracks. “Lucky That Way,” one of Walsh’s favorites off the album, speaks to the extraordinary life he’s lived, even through the hurdles, and features Ringo Starr, his real life brother-in-law, on drums. The song ironically serves as a mature sequel to Walsh’s famed “Life’s Been Good” and for Walsh, life is just that.

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” it. The early Hamburg steaks were nothing like the burgers of today. They were tough cuts of meat, shredded and mixed with bread crumbs and onion. Sometime in the 19th Century, German immigrants to America threw this steak between a couple of slices of bread for convenience and the modern hamburger was born.

Beer and Burgers A few issues ago, we looked at pairing food and beer. We looked at some interesting and even exotic pairings. One thing we didn’t discuss was the traditional beer and burger. There has been a proliferation of gourmet burger places over the past few years here in Arizona, and since both beer and burgers have achieved a new found respect recently, what better time to cover this topic? While everybody may think they know the history of the hamburger, few realize that its ancestry actually dates back to the Thirteenth Century and Genghis Khan and his “Golden Horde” or the Mongols, as we know them. While they

were off conquering two thirds of the known world, they had very little time to stop, dismount and have a meal. So they would use lamb or mutton scrapings which they formed into a patty (the better to eat with one hand while riding) and slipped it under their saddle, where it would tenderize. They would then eat the meat raw after battle. Several years later, Khan’s grandson went in to the family business and invaded Russia. The Russian people adopted the raw meat patties, added raw onion and egg to them and named them “Steak Tartare”…Tartar being the Russian word for Mongol. The Russians then brought this delicacy to Germany where it ended up in the town of Hamburg, where, lo and behold, somebody thought to cook

So much for history, let’s get to modern times and figure out where beer comes in. Burgers have always been a staple of backyard barbecues, and so has beer. It’s only natural that they are thought of together. Burgers are also easily prepared food for taverns with small kitchens, and they have always been popular with the working class. Beer, of course, has long been thought of as a working class beverage. Beer and burgers have changed their image over the past decade. You can get gourmet bison, elk, or even ostrich burgers at many restaurants, just as you can get great beers at variety of places. Before we ruffle any feathers, we are aware that there are literally thousands of great burgers out there, and many of the restaurants that carry them serve great beer. No argument there. But let’s examine the modern phenomenon of burger bars, places where the signature dish is a gourmet burger, and carry world class beer to support it. There are probably places that did it earlier, but one of the first restaurants that came to our attention was Father’s Office in Santa Monica, CA. Described as one of the early gastropubs, restaurants where beer has a focus with the food, their signature dish is the office burger. Paired with any of their 36 draft beers, it’s a treat for anyone. In Arizona, one of the first gourmet burger places to open up was Delux at 32nd Street and Camelback in Phoenix. Delux offers 40 taps, all craft and import, along with two outstanding burger choices, and they have added everything from gourmet hot dogs to sake marinated fish. The concept proved so popular that they had to open a storefront just to handle their takeout business.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

In short succession, great burger and beer places have opened up throughout the Valley, The Grind in Arcadia brings a unique coal fired oven experience along with some great local beers. Stockyards Restaurant on Washington in Phoenix offers complimentary sliders at happy hour, along with a killer burger on the regular menu, and a nice selection of craft beer. Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers in the Grayhawk Shopping Plaza in North Scottsdale has a name that says it all. Look for a great selection of craft beer in a can up there. The Garage Wine and Tap at 16th Street and Bethany Home has a great burger and your choice of beers like Anderson Valley Hop Ottin, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter or even import favorite Tripel Karmeliet to go with it. SanTan Brewing always brings it strong, but during American Craft Beer Week, they go all out with a burger special every day. Everything from Elk to Smoked Marlin to a Vietnamese burger can be found there…and the beer is always wonderful. Before all these places, however, there was another one that specialized in burgers, Original Wineburger. Located at 19th Avenue and Bethany Home, they may have been the originator of the gourmet burger. Spraying down the burgers with a red wine while they are cooking lends a unique juiciness and flavor to these patties. Located in an unassuming location, the Original Wineburger has some great beer, including Krombacher Pils, the best selling Pilsner in Germany, Thunder Canyon Deep Canyon Amber on draft and a nice selection of Big Sky products in bottles. All this combines to make the Original Wineburger one of the few “old school” burger joints to embrace high end beer. The list goes on and on. Wherever there are good burgers, there is beer. But what you want to really look for is the spots that offer amazing burgers and amazing beer. Then you will be enjoying yourself…but by all means, avoid any place that asks you stick your burger under your seat cushion before you eat it. After all, you’re not a Mongol.

Alaskan Raspberry Wheat Returns to the Pilot Series For a Limited Time this June Brewery Tasting Bar Sells Out in Less Than One Hour Alaskan Brewing Co. is bringing back their much anticipated summer Pilot Series release, Alaskan Raspberry Wheat, for a limited time this June. The beer, which released in Juneau on June 1, sold out at the Brewery’s gift shop and tasting bar in less than one hour, with dozens of fans waiting in line outside before the tasting bar opened for business. The Alaskan Pilot Series features a rotating collection of big, bold and distinctive brews packaged in 22 oz bottles. The current limited-edition release of Alaskan Raspberry Wheat

will be arriving in June at select locations throughout Alaska and the other states where Alaskan Beer is distributed. Alaskan Raspberry Wheat is an American-style wheat ale highlighting the bright flavors and inviting aroma of more than 3,000 pounds of real raspberries added during fermentation. The tart flavor of raspberries balances the full-bodied wheat profile and malt sweetness of this enticingly red-hued brew. Bigger than most traditional fruit beers, Alaskan Raspberry Wheat has a little extra kick to its dry and effervescent finish. In 2012, Alaskan plans to release two more Pilot Series beers in addition to the Raspberry Wheat. Alaskan Baltic Porter, another Pilot Series favorite, will return in September for the first time since 2009, and the December release will feature a new Imperial Red Ale.

ARIZONA HOME BREWERS! by

Last week was supposed to wrap up my look into the best and most creative of the bunch however, after quite a few emails and even a phone call or three I discovered that one very important man was left out of the group. That man is David Schollmeyer. Why is David so important you ask? Let’s begin by saying that he served on the board of the Arizona Society of HomeBrewers for three years and has been an active member since 2007. Most importantly, he won and American Home Brewers Association GOLD Medal last year for his beer called Chimayo Azul. A strong Belgian dark ale brewed with Mexican sugar. In total there were four hundred and four entries in that category. This is three hundred plus more entries thanthe IPA category at the AmeriCAN beer festival. How’s that for competition? David began in 2006 by borrowing a kit from his neighbor and immediately began to enjoy the “scientific process” involved in creating something from scratch. His first brew was a Four Peaks Hop Knot clone. He was absolutely amazed to people said to him “hey this tastes just like Hop Knot”. At that moment a star was born! Once his neighbor moved away David immediately set up his own system as he was going crazy not being able to express himself through his love of the craft.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

When asked what he would like to add to the story, he said “I’m an engineer by trade so for me it’s all about process”. To create a recipe and take it from start to finish with his own creative insight is what makes this more than hobby. Of course, my next question was when will you open a brewery? He laughed and replied “are you kidding that sounds like work!” Until next week, Cheers! June 7th, 2012 - June 13th, 2012

“Holy Shiitake” Mellow Mushroom has opened up a brand new location in City North. I literally live across the street from here, so the fact that it is open seven nights a week until 2am is really convenient. The happy hour is from 3pm-6pm Monday-Friday, but the reverse is seven nights a week starting at 10pm. During the day the happy hour is half off drinks and munchies, and at night it is just half off drinks. I got excited because they carry one of my favorite beers, that not a lot of places carry; Purple Haze. The 22oz beers are $3.50 during the happy hour times, which is such a great deal. I also got the cinnamon and honey pretzels that you can dip in a sauce, this is probably one of the most delicious and soft pretzels you will ever have. I also recommend their spinach artichoke dip…I know you have had it at a lot of places, but I love that here it’s chunky and not a mush. The music here is awesome as well as the atmosphere, and staff. 5350 E. High St. Suite 115 Phoenix, AZ 85054. www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule

The Night Owl BY EVELYN ROMANS

Pretty Things Peepshow: Burlesque and Vaudeville at the Phoenix Center for the Arts Back in the day, before the internet was born, people used to leave their homes for entertainment. Some would enthusiastically drive down to the bowling alley in their Chevys, others would get dolled up and head down to the soda shop for some pop and ice cream. So wholesome. So clean. For even more excitement, guys and gals would eagerly await a traveling circus that promised acts of fire and the possibility of someone getting hurt with knife throwing, sword swallowing, and tight-rope walking to blame. And when they felt like they needed a little raunch in their lives, they would pay a few cents to take a gander at a pretty, young miss who didn’t mind showing an audience a little somethin’ somethin’ to help ease their pubescent or creeper longings. These days, people have come to understand the power of technology and the ease of satisfying more of their needs. Yet something about those victory curls and the rockabilly style remain alluring. Sword swallowing and whip cracking? That sounds pretty darn exciting to me! These are just two acts you can expect to witness this Thursday when Pretty Things Peepshow rolls into town. You will also be the spectator of the following acts done by scantily dressed ladies: human blockhead, the Chinese execution blade box, burlesque, juggling, and more at this show performed by beautiful oddities. And it gets curiouser and curiouser, eh? Pretty Things Peepshow was created to catch your attention and they have been successful at bringing entertainment to those seeking something different and nostalgic for the past four years. They have been featured on The Colbert Report,

Hot Summer Nights at San Felipe’s Cantina Sometime around 1:00 pm on Thursday afternoons, I start to get a little yearning for a calorie-filled beverage that will wash away all my workweek sorrows. I’m sure you can relate. I’m speaking of that lingering strain of impatience for the weekend and of the boredom of a tired routine that loves to dwell on the corners of your mouth to create an unattractive, repellent frown. I yearn for the tanginess of a salt-rimmed glass filled with margarita nectar or the bitter flavor of a cool vodka tonic that awaits me when my 8 to 5 completes. The scorching heat of our desert summers is back, which means there will be a lot of thirsty individuals in the valley after 5 on any given June afternoon. With that in mind, San Felipe’s will aid us, Phoenicians, in

Stay in groups. Sharks are more likely to pick off lone individuals. Don’t wander too far from shore. If you’re in an area that’s a habitat for sharks, stay close to shore. Of course, if bull sharks are in the area, you’re screwed because those devils love shallow water.

Preventing Shark Attacks The best way to survive a shark attack is to avoid one in the first place. Just follow these guidelines so your foot doesn’t end up in the stomach of a MANEATER. Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be present and evacuate the water if sharks are seen while you’re there. Beaches will often post warnings to avoid swimming because sharks have been spotted in the area. You’d think people would heed these warnings, but several attacks have occurred when individuals ignored

better to hold your pee until you can make it ashore. Sharks might pick up on the scent of your fragrant urine and swim over to check things out. Avoid steep drop-offs and waters in between sandbars. We covered this bit above. Avoid shiny jewelry and bright clothing. Sharks have a pretty good sense of sight. They can see contrasts especially well. Shiny jewelry and bright clothing provide a nice contrast to the dark water of the ocean, making you a very visible target.

Avoid waters being used by sport or commercial fisherman. Fisherman leave a lot of scraps and bait in the water. Other fish come to nibble on the leftovers, creating a huge mass of potential shark food. These areas essentially become Shark Golden Corral. Don’t enter the water if you’re bleeding. You’re basically telling sharks “Hey, over here! Eat me!” Sharks have a powerful sense of smell. Just one whiff of your blood, and they’ll be on you faster than you can say “What The Heck.” Don’t pee in the water. We’ve all done it. 1) We’re too lazy to get out of the water to go to the bathroom and 2) It kind feels good to pee while sitting in a body of water. But if you’re in an area where sharks are prevalent,
