‘Rock of Ages’

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

‘Peace, Love & Misunderstanding’*

‘Otter 501’ A woman (Katie Pofahl) finds a sea otter pup who has been separated from her mother. As she and the playful pup learn to navigate the opportunities and risks of life without anchor, we see the incredible efforts people have undertaken to save sea otters from the brink of existence. (G – 85 minutes)

Joseph: “‘Rock of Ages’ is an extremely entertaining musical masterpiece. Thanks to the exciting energy that director Adam Shankman injects into it, the new cinematic adaptation of the popular Broadway show is sure to leave audiences awestruck. The flick literally brings to life several of the songs that shaped a generation and, in doing so, provides viewers with the perfect excuse to tap their feet – or, for those who prefer it, bang their heads.” Grade: B

An uptight New York City attorney (Catherine Keener) takes her husband (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and their two teenagers (Elizabeth Olsen and Chace Crawford) to her hippie mother’s (Jane Fonda) farmhouse upstate for a family vacation. (R – 96 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

Joseph: “When will filmmakers realize that animals are born entertainers? Director Bob Talbot and screenwriter Josh Rosen fuse fact with fiction for their new nature documentary ‘Otter 501.’ However, rather than enhancing the entertainment value, the addition of artificial elements actually abates it, creating a watered down version of what the motion could have been had they merely allowed the cute and cuddly creatures to carry the show.” Grade: D

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ Three magazine employees (Aubrey Plaza, Jake Johnson and Karan Soni) head out on an assignment to interview a guy (Mark Duplass) who placed a classified ad seeking a companion for time travel. (R – 94 minutes)

Adam Sandler plays a man who, while still in his teens, fathered a son (Andy Samberg) and raised him as a single parent up until his 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, said son’s world comes crashing down. (R – 100 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

Soundbite Spotlight

Stan: “I’ve often stated from my experience of working on projects throughout the years, ‘It’s the smaller independent projects that are the real gems of filmmaking’. With a cleverly written script by Derek Connolly, the sure hand of director Colin Trevorrow, and the expertise of cinematographer Ben Kasulke who captured the look and feel of a bigger budgeted production, ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ excels as a comedy/ sci-fi themed story that carefully and intuitively takes us on a journey of believing and the incredible will to succeed, right up to the marvelous twist of the last scene as it fades to black and into our memory bank for an extended stay…” Grade: AJoseph: “‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ is as thought-provoking as it is emotionally stimulating. Oh, and it is also fantastically funny. The new dramedy from director Colin Trevorrow and screenwriter Derek Connolly encourages viewers to believe that the impossible is in fact possible – not so much as a result of scientific advances or mere magic but rather the fascination of the human spirit. This is a feel-good film that will have you talking about the experience long after you leave the theater.” Grade: A

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of motion picture projects past and present.

Director of Photography/ Cinematographer Benjamin Kasulke (‘Safety Not Guaranteed’) By Stan Robinson In the American film production system, the camera department is subordinate to the Director of Photography (DP), who, along with and next to the director, has the final word on all decisions related to both lighting and framing, while the Cinematographer selects the film stock, lens, filters, etc., to realize the scene in accordance with the intentions of the director. In some instances the director will allow the cinematographer complete

independence. On ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’, Benjamin Kasulke worked as both on the film… “I knew Mark Duplass who was on of the producers of it along with his brother Jay, I worked with him on quite a few films and had some good filmmaking experiences with him in Washington state, and the director and screenwriter, Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly had approached Mark and he suggested me, so it was sort of a ‘fourth habit’ for him to be able to make movies in Washington and I was always the DP on his Washington films. “I tend to work as the DP and the cinematographer as much as I can, especially handheld work, there’s a feel to it I try and get and it’s real tricky if I hand it off to another camera person. We didn’t have a ton of prep time going in to it, Colin [director] and I talked a lot leading up to it, we had only about two weeks of prep on the ground and we shot for five weeks, it was pretty reasonable and they did a good job with the scheduling. Our First AD, Mel Eslyn, was pretty good at pulling the schedule together and keeping us from going crazy with all that stuff (with a chuckle!). “I was at the Sundance screenings which were pretty phenomenal and that was about as good as it could possibly get, and there were also very good reviews from Sundance London which happened this year, they inaugurated a Sundance London program where they bring selections from the festival here to screen in London and that went really, really well, which was kind of good news, I feel like there’s a tendency with the British film press to rip American films, and we were hoping that we wouldn’t be the result of collateral damage (laughing). We were on a role with the festival tour, its played in Seattle

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

For the movie “The Hangover” (2009) three sets of twins and a dummy were used to portray the baby! [Washington]; Sidney, Australia, and its been a very good run and FilmDistrict picked it up so its coming out in a week or so, June 8th we open up. It’s a little scary though, we open up next to ‘Prometheus’ and everybody is scratching their head (with a chuckle) but we’re pretty excited! And as you say, can it stand on it own two feet, how does it work when its up against some big crowd pleasers and is there still an audience for it. “It’s a different kind of movie, its really funny, and its really smart, its not too precious, and it doesn’t take the characters too seriously and it also gives them a lot of respect. Its nice to make a film with your friends, have a good time making it, and have other people enjoy it, at festivals we’ve had people come up to us with ‘We loved your film’ and its our favorite one, its pretty rewarding!” – Benjamin Kasulke

Bonus Features The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD.

The James Bond movie ‘Casino Royale’ (2006), starring Daniel Craig, was the first Bond film approved by Chinese censors. With 22 movies since ‘Dr. No’ (1962), the Bond movies are the second highest grossing film series, behind Harry Potter. ‘Skyfall’, the next one, is due November 2012.

apocalyptic thriller was written and directed by Justin McConnell. “With ‘The Collapsed,’ we did not have the budget to wow people with cities falling down or gangs of people slaughtering each other – all of those things that you have come to expect from a post-apocalyptic film. We could not afford it. But those limitations helped us get to the root of what we were trying to do a lot faster. We learned how to bridge the gap. We tailored the story to be smaller in scope and focused on other things to bring it down to the basics and tell our story more economically.” – Justin McConnell

away, not only are they subjected to emotional stress but they have also got the physical strain of what is going on and what work needs to be done in that household. It is just astounding what some of these men and women have gone through in their lives. And they are so resilient to carry through. The stories that I have heard about and the people whom I have met as a result of this film have opened my eyes to humanity and just how amazing it is.” – Samuel Fischer

The parallel stories of a World War II veteran (John Cromwell) and an Iraqi veteran (Jonathan Bennett) reveal the losses, regrets and moral dilemmas that unite all soldiers across all wars and generations. The war drama was directed by Samuel Fischer. “With families trying to maintain a household while their loved ones are

“We premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, which is the biggest horror event in the world. The fans there were absolutely insane. There was a line around the block and the screening sold out. We were overwhelmed. But it went over extremely well. There were people cheering for certain characters and people booing for those they did not like. The screening in Calgary was probably the rowdiest of all, though. People were out of their seats, screaming and chanting. It was really a nut house.” – Jesse Thomas Cook

‘Seeking Justice’ By Joseph J. Airdo After his wife (January Jones) is assaulted, a husband (Nicolas Cage) enlists the services of a vigilante group to help him settle the score. Then he discovers they want a favor from him in return. Harold Perrineau plays Cage’s character’s friend and colleague.

“[Nicolas Cage] really is that intense. The first time we sat down at a table to read the script, I recognized the specific pattern of his voice as soon as he started talking. Suddenly, everything that I have ever seen him do started racing through my brain. He brought a real intensity to the set. And he was always working – every single second he was investigating his character and coming up with something interesting. It was really cool to watch him work.” – Harold Perrineau

those within the Gila River Indian Community and for those throughout the valley, this is the beginning of an exciting project.” Vee Quiva Casino & Hotel will feature an expansive 70,000 square foot gaming floor with over 900 slot machines, 50 table games, a poker room and a 550 seat bingo hall. The project will also include a three-story hotel with 90 tastefully appointed rooms, a fitness center, pool and over 3,000 square feet of banquet space. A wide variety of delicious dining options including a food court, coffee kiosk, signature restaurant and a dining option that will remain open all day will round out the amenities.

Representatives from each of the organizations involved in the project were in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Gila River Gaming Enterprises, Inc. operates three Arizona casinos owned by the Gila River Indian Community including Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, Lone Butte Casino, and Vee Quiva Casino. All three casinos offer a combination of slots, table games, bingo and poker. Additional information on these and other events is available by calling 1-800-946-4452, or on their website at www.wingilariver.com

“Updating Vee Quiva Casino & Hotel will create a seamless entertainment experience to go with the newly constructed Lone Butte Casino and Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino,” said John J. James, CEO of Gila River Gaming Enterprises. “These projects showcase the commitment that Gila River Gaming Enterprises has made to providing the best guest experience in

Sea legends of mermaids and undersea odysseys from Neptune to Captain Nemo merge reality and myth. By the mid-19th century, the British naval and merchant marine force was the largest in the world

and sailors in crisp navy and white uniforms were heroic icons of masculinity. Historical seaside dress and contemporary resort wear often featured motifs that drew upon nautical themes, forming a timeless trend of romantic fashions reminiscent of another time and place. This exhibition explores the far-reaching influence of the romance of the sea on fashion design. Featuring ensembles from the 19th century to the current collections, the designs included are drawn from the Museum’s extensive permanent collection, private collections and international fashion houses including Emilio Pucci, Emanuel Ungaro and Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.

It’s All You Hoped It Would Be Yet, All It’s Never Been By AZ Weekly In case you live in a cave and haven’t heard, there’s an all-new show in town, brought to us by the dream-weavers at Cirque du Soleil…KOOZA! (We put the exclamation point in because it is really just that good). Why is the show so good? Here’s why: First of all, they’ve figured out how to air condition a giant tent in the middle of the 110 degree desert. We expected it to be warm and balmy. It wasn’t. KOOZA! Second, there’s no bad seats. No matter where you sit you will be amazingly close to the action…and there’s lots of action. KOOZA!

Next, the performances are everything you want from a Cirque production. Stunning, Scary, Beautiful, Unbelievable and Death Defying. Some parts even had the audience afraid to gaze upon it. The Spinning Wheel of Death brought forth screams of terror from all around the arena while the high-wire stopped our hearts. The uncanny athleticism of the performers will astound you. More incredible is the realization that they perform these miracles every single day. KOOZA!

‘Invention Hunters’ host Raymond gives creators the business

AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE

As the business-minded half of Food Network’s “Invention Hunters” – in which he stars with “Gadget Nation” author Steve Greenberg – Patrick Raymond’s in-depth knowledge of the intricacies of turning a great idea into a must-have product is on full display. And while viewers may scratch their heads about some items he and Greenberg choose to champion for a licensing deal, Raymond understands that even a product with broad appeal and an agreeable price is not a sure thing with consumers. That’s because of the failure of his own great idea, the ShowerBow – which the rangy Raymond designed after being repeatedly assailed by a clingy shower curtain – even after it appeared on HSN and the shelves of Bed, Bath & Beyond. “And Mr. Smarty-Pants went to business school!” the former advertising executive says, chuckling. “So I’m thinking, ‘Wow! If I got it wrong, what chance do inventors who are not formally educated have?’ ” Rather than dwell on his losses, Raymond – who by then had founded the Inventors Association of Manhattan and was serving as executive director of the United Inventors Association – decided to put the lessons learned to good use.

WINE! SECTION - Sponsored By www.ArizonaVinesandWines.com 28

What Do I Like?

by Peter Juneja, PhoenixWineParties.com Have you just discovered wine? Do you know what types of wines you prefer? How do you pick out a glass of wine in a restaurant? For the beginner, knowing which wine to select could be very scary and complicated. So how do you figure out what kind of wines you like? Sample, Sample, Sample!!!! As you read this article, remember the most important rule: Don’t let anyone tell you what to drink. Everyone has their own unique palate and only you can know what you like.

Doug Pike lives in Scottsdale and is a 20-year member of the National Cartoonists Society. He is the author of Gone With The Wine, The Grapes of Laugh, and the co-author, with Harry Margulies, of Less Than A Full Deck.

So how do you figure out what you enjoy? Whites, reds, fruity, dry, California, French? This can become overwhelming, so start slow. Most wine drinkers start with white wines and then move on to red wines, but there is no set rule. First find a wine tasting at your local wine store. There are always free or low cost tastings in your neighborhood. As you taste these wines, take notes. The person who is pouring the samples should know the key flavor terms associated with each wine which can help you understand what you like and don’t like about certain vintages. You may love dry wines, but not tannic wines. You may love sweet wines, but not oaky wines. As you get

these key terms figured out, you can now expand your range. Find wines that are similar in style to what you know you like. You may find that you love the high alcohol and low acid of California Cabernet, but not the earthiness and sharp acid of French Cabernet (Bordeaux). You have now narrowed down your list of wines. Keep trying different wines and styles. What you like today may not be the wine you like tomorrow. My tastes change constantly and what I drink also changes. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. And definitely don’t be afraid to ask for a sample of the wine before you order it. The more you taste, the more comfortable you will get with wine. Remember, Always Trust Your Palate. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: We are not medical experts or chemists. We are neither advocates nor opponents of the use and consumption of sulfites. Because customers often ask us about sulfites in wine, and there seems a great deal of confusion and fear revolving around the matter, we did a little online research- which should be taken with a grain of salt in the first place- and compiled some of what we found here, in the hopes it will help inform you. -Vino 100 Phoenix Staff Firstly, there are some common beliefs about sulfites that seem to be misconceptions, and which it would seem helpful to dispel. The gist of it all, though, seems to be that if you get headachy or have another allergic reaction after drinking wine, especially red wine, it’s probably not sulfites, unless you’re asthmatic. Secondly, many people experience a reaction to drinking wine and the jury is still out on what the actual case might be. Here are some talking points. Sulfites exist both naturally and as additives. Even our bodies produce as much as a gram (three times the amount it is legal to add as preservative per liter of wine) or so every day. A very short list of some of the foods in which they occur naturally may be very helpful in deciding whether it is the sulfites in a wine that are bothering you: grapes, oranges, chicken eggs. This is key, and answers what seems to be the most common misperception: Red wines, about which we get the most headache complaints and expressions of sulfite concerns, contain the least sulfites. Red wines are naturally and inherently the most resilient and low-sugar wines, and therefore generally require the least addition of preservative sulfites. Nearly all dried fruits and meats contain sulphites. Raisins have up to 1250 PPM. Bacon, orange juice,

potato chips, cider, candied fruits, sausages, and even pancake syrup contains sulphite: often at levels higher than found in wine. The human body produces its own sulphite as a by-product of metabolic activity. An allergic reaction is the body’s response to the presence of foreign proteins. Sulphite is not a protein, and cannot cause an allergic response. What is commonly described as a ‘sulphite headache’ is a reaction to bio-amines. Bio-amines are compounds formed in wines for various reasons—the most common being malolactic fermentation. This fermentation is used in both red an white wines to soften the acids. “Organic” wines contain sulfites. Amounts vary depending on the regions of production, but there will almost always be some. “Organic” may mean that there are limits on sulfite addition, or that there can be none added, but some sulfites always occur naturally in wine. Here are a couple informative quotes: “If you are not asthmatic, sulfite sensitivity would be very unusual. If you are asthmatic, your chances of being sensitive to sulfites is in the range of between 1 in 10, and 1 in 20.” -The Cleveland Clinic Foundation http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders/ sulfite_sensitivity/hic_sulfite_sensitivity. aspx

Wine with your movie… Priceless by Josh Moffitt, ArizonaLandBaron.com Two VIP movie tickets at iPic complete with push-button electric recliners, pillow and blanket: $54.00 Flatbread pepperoni and Italian sausage pizza, two glasses of Stratton Lummis, The Riddler: $46.00 No screaming kids kicking the back of your seat: Priceless Other benefits include: Not having to move your knees out of the way so everyone in the aisle can go to the bathroom 50 times. Having impeccable, attentive service throughout the evening, “Can I bring you another glass of wine, sir?” A noticeable lack of popcorn and “sticky stuff” on the floor. Order your tickets online and select the exact seats you want, so you never have to feel hurried or rushed, or have to get there early for “good seats.” Checking in is easy, too. Just enter your phone number on a touch

screen at the entrance and your tickets print right out. Sure, it is a little bit more expensive than going to the regular movies. But like everything in life, you get what you pay for. Why not live a little? I enjoy iPic at Scottsdale Quarter, but there are a few more upscale movie theaters around the valley you can explore…

Many people have written about the concept of terroir. The basic premise is originally French, but it’s an idea that has been adopted around the world. It supposes that special characteristics of the geography, geology and climate of a particular place are bestowed upon products such as wine, coffee and tea. Agricultural sites in the same region share similar soil, weather conditions and farming techniques, which all contribute to the unique qualities of the crop. It can be very loosely translated as “a sense of place,” which is embodied in certain characteristic qualities, the sum of the effects that the local environment has had on the production of the product. That being said, there is the argument that some people make that grape quality is not reliant on place, that great quality can be achieved regardless of a sense of place. My instincts and 18 years of experience tell me that both are correct to a degree. When grapes are harvested they are pure expressions

and conduits for the concept of terroir. Once those grapes are in the winery, however; they can be manipulated by adding sugar, citric acid adjustments and oak additives to name a few. The winemaking process can remove much and sometimes all of the original detectable sense of place or terroir. Even opponents to the concept will concede that great wines originate in the vineyard. Recently, I tasted the wines of Granite Creek Vineyards in Chino Valley, near Prescott, the only certified organic vineyard and winery in state. Their wines can’t use additives either in the winemaking or in the soil, which includes pesticides and artificial fertilizers. They are, in my opinion, a direct expression of the place they come from, and as such, a good example of the concept of terroir and its influence on wine. You can learn about Arizona’s great wines and judge for yourself if terroir is real by attending any of my wine events around the state at mywinehelper.com or you can go directly to my Meetup group Bluetooth-wine-society for calendar dates and detailed information about events featuring Arizona wines.

BEER! SECTION

BEER! PLENTY TO DO AND SEE IN WASHINGTON D.C. Washington D.C…. our nation’s capital, is such a wonderful place to visit. There is just so much going on here, both historical and topical. But the real surprise is how much the beer culture has grown in The District. If you find yourself travelling there with the family to experience a little American history, make sure you plan some time to explore what is going on with craft beer and specialty imports. Now it certainly didn’t hurt that we were in town to experience Savor 2012, a craft beer and food pairing of incredible proportions. Washington D.C.’s National Building Museum held 74 participating breweries (60 of which were selected from a lottery of 160 total entrants, and another 14 event sponsors) pouring 150 beers and representing over 30 states for the event. More than half of those breweries were new to the occasion, and some 2,000 attendees turned out each night. It’s the kind where craft drinkers get to linger and ask questions during the event - and brewer/owners are actually there to answer.

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” Highlights from Savor? Just about everything. From the moment you walk in and get handed your program and glass to the end of the night when you get handed your special bottle of Terra Incognito (produced by Boulevard and Sierra Nevada), the event is amazing. Not your typical beer fest, most folks are in button down shirts and sport jackets. Even the brewers (who can be notorious for dressing down) step up the sartorial game just a bit. But the event is about the food and beer, and Savor delivers. Try some burrata on toast with arugula pesto and lemon zest paired with Bitter American from 21st Amendment. How about some Abita Restoration Pale Ale with Blue crab and Louisiana crawfish cake and red repperrouille. Or stop over at Bell’s for some Wild One paired with Roasted beet and chevre tartlet and sherry gastrique. A little secret about Bell’s…towards the end of Saturday night, they were running low on beer and all of a sudden broke out a variety of amazing beers including a 2008 Eccentric Ale. Looking for beers actually available in Arizona? Go to New Belgium for the Tart Lychee paired with Gorgonzola dolce tart, lychee and raspberry compote with candied pecan. Or Belgo IPA

with Salt cod fritters and malt vinegar gastrique. And Ballast Point showed up with Sculpin paired with Pickledhawaiiantombo, radish and preserved lemon Are you still hungry and thirsty? No problem, let’s visit some of our old Arizona friends. Avery had two amazing beers with their Muscat d’amore paired with Huckleberry and meyer lemon crème puff and Uncle Jacobs Stout with Pecan crusted BBQ beef shortribs. Flying Dog was there too, sort of defending their new home turf…and they did a great job. Starting with Chocolate IPA paired with Adobo grilled albacore skewer and followed by Wildeman Farmhouse IPA and Maine lobster pot sticker, pickled pepper and green garlic relish. The folks from Avery and Flying Dog both sent best wishes to Arizona and both of them are looking forward to returning when their production increases. Other pairings included SkaModus Hoperandi paired with Kentucky hot brown, roasted turkey, brioche, bacon, and gruyere; Founders who brought Curmudgeon Old Ale which went perfectly with the lamb meatballs, tomato sauce and shaved parmesan; and Green Flash who scored big with Rayon Vert along with Citrus cured salmon, grapefruit and pistachio cream cheese as well as

West Coast IPA paired with Spinach, manchego and artichoke empanada. Pairings were all handled by Adam Dulye, who is chef/owner at San Francisco’s The Monk’s Kettle and The Abbot’s Cellar. With an approach best described as farm to table, Dulye works with brewers to push the envelope on craft beer and food pairing, with the most notable example an invitation to present a beer pairing dinner at the James Beard House in New York. Pretty impressive stuff, and he proved every word of it this past weekend. But Washington is not all about Savor… not at all. There are plenty of great beer bars and restaurants to enjoy. Let’s take a look at some of the best. First off, no trip to D.C. would be complete without visiting Churchkey. Located at 1337 14th Street in the Northwest part of the city, this is an amazing beer bar… made only more so because of the special events for Savor week. Beer Director, Greg Engert, has put together over 550 selections including 50 draft handles. Bottles include all sorts of rarities many of which adorn high shelves on the walls surrounding the restaurant. Another great feature is three separate keg coolers at three different

temperatures to ensure that all beer is served at the proper temperature. Events were plentiful during Savor week and included a joint event with Cigar City Brewing and Funky Buddha from Tampa and Boca Raton respectively. In addition to 25 plus taps from these two breweries, they released a collaboration beer (in conjunction with new mid-Atlantic brewery, Bluejacket) called Snack Attack. Best described as boozey chocolate milk, this beer is a limitededition imperial porter flavored with dry-roasted peanuts, Key West sea salt, vanilla beans, cacao nibs, and milk sugar. All in all, it was a pretty good beer, despite some concerns based on the ingredient list. Churchkey turned around the next day and gave their taps to Founders. Incredible beers ensued including Blushing Monk, KBS, and Better Half, a bigger version of Curmudgeon (is

Speaking of great food and great beer, not too far from Churchkey is Brasserie Beck. The focus at Beck is on European beers and chef/owner Robert Wiedmaier has brought the muscle. Having been invited to design a special beer by the folks at BrouwerijThe Musketeers who make the Troubadour beers we have grown to love in Arizona, Chef Robert came up with Antigoon. This Belgian Pale Ale is a nice table beer and weighing in at 6.7% puts it more on the manageable side of Belgian beers. It pairs well with a variety of foods and there is an awesome tap tower for the brand. Antigoon is named after a giant who stood watch over a bridge and refused to allow anyone to pass

without paying his toll. Those who refused had their hands cut off and thrown in the river. The tables were turned on Antigoon when a small fellow named Brabo tricked the giant and cut off his hand…Antigoon bled to death. Yes, there is also a nice Belgian Pilsner on tap named after Brabo. Food can only be described as amazing. A fairly authentic Belgian influenced menu features mussels along with a cassoulet that is amazing and one of the best beef carbonades around. Brunch is a high point also. It so happened that New Belgium brewmaster Peter Bouckaert was in town and the Brasserie put on a beer brunch that could only be described as outstanding. Starting with a Weisswurst Mac and Cheese paired with both Abbey and Abbey Grand Cru, followed by a mole braised short rib, matched with Cocoa Mole and La Folie, and finishing with a Banana Pot du Crème coupled with both Tripel

and Tart Lychee, everything about this meal was perfect. A couple of other great places to check out included Meridian Pint, Iron Horse Pizzeria Paradaiso and Regional Food and Drink (RFD). For those of you that remember the old Brickskeller, RFD offers their take on the Brick Burger complete with cheddar, salami, bacon, red onion and coleslaw. Beers at all of these places are equally outstanding and we were fortunate enough to hit a launch party for Virginia brewery Devil’s Backbone at RFD as well as a tap takeover featuring Flying Dog at Iron Horse. There is a lot to see and do in D.C., but always leave time, and room, for great beer. When you can couple it with great food, all the better!

Last week was supposed to wrap up Hello

again Craft Beer Lovers, to day I’d like to tell you about my experience at Sierra Nevada Beer Camp. Yes you heard that right, Beer Camp. An opportunity to brew at one of the most advanced brewing facilities in the craft beer world. First you are grouped together with other craft beer geeks from your region and asked to come up with a basic recipe. I was lucky enough to be paired with the owners of Churchill’s and Hamilton’s pubs in San Diego as well as Jim Lolli from The Hungry Monk and quite a few other great people.

BEER! SECTION

BEER CAMP @ SIERRA NEVADA, Yes Please!

As you are creating your recipe, the guides take you a true behind the scenes look at the brewery, the process and the magic that makes this brewery so popular among the craft faithful. Our recipe was a sessionable West Coast pale ale with a touch of Apricot & Kumquat. A true winner for summer in the western region. The brewers took us through the entire process start to finish. Mashing the grain, hop additions, adding the fruit and even tasting the wort. What a great experience!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Of course and most importantly we ALWAYS had a beer in our hands and were fortunate enough to taste many of the previous Beer Camp brews and beer only available at the brewery. The most intriguing thing about the entire tour was the SCIENCE involved. There is instrumentation to measure Iron levels and machines that pull the beer apart on a molecular level to measure every individual element. There are Q/A labs that test the beer continually for off flavours and pressure issues. It’s an amazing sight to behold. This a thinking man’s brewery and beer only escapes its four walls when it’s perfect.

Until next week, cheers!

“Bigger is Not Always Better” My all-time favorite place to go for happy hour sushi has got to be Geisha A Go Go, this place does it right. This is a smaller restaurant so it makes it look poppin’ all the time, but you will not be disappointed. The interior is all black and green with low seating at the upper tables. The decoration for the walls is flavored infused sake that changes often, along with James Morrision, Sid Vicious, and Jimi Hendrix for the pleasing of your eyes. Every single day they offer happy hour from 3pm-7pm and all day on Sundays. They have half off appetizers, house maki rolls, infused sake, and the specialty cocktails, which makes for an awesome meal without hurting your wallet. I am a sucker for sake bombers, and it is such a social thing, and they are only $4.50 with a 22oz beer. I tend to like crazy stuff when it comes to sushi but I love the veggie rolls because they use Japanese root vegetables, and it is only about $3. My personal favorite server is Ashley and she just takes care of me every time, pours your first sake for you and everything (since in Japanese culture, it is bad luck to pour your own the first time). Sundays are the best time to go but it gets packed fast so get there early if you would like a spot. 7150 E. 6th Ave. Scottsdale, AZ 85250 www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule

‘Snooki & JWOWW’

By Jacqueline cutler

hit the city

A conference room on the 37th floor of a Manhattan office building seems an unlikely setting for two women known for their antics on beaches and in bars. Snooki and Jwoww of “Jersey Shore” fame are sequestered in this room, attended by a hairstylist and a publicist, to promote their spinoff, “Snooki & JWOWW,” launching Thursday, June 21, on MTV. Capitalizing on the phenomenon that is “Jersey Shore,” the women’s unscripted series follows their housemate’s show, DJ Pauly D’s “The Pauly D Project” on Thursdays, part of MTV’s campaign to keep Thursday “Jerzday.” “I’m excited to show a different side of us, not partying,” says Snooki, who is five months pregnant. “Yeah, well, I’m partying,” Jwoww says. Snooki, who prefers her given name of Nicole Polizzi, signs her new novel,

“Snooki & JWOWW” premieres Thursday on MTV.

“Gorilla Beach,” written with Valerie Frankel. She wears extraordinarily long fake eyelashes that look as if it must be a struggle to keep her eyes open. Jwoww, whose real name is Jenni Farley, calls them tarantulas and says, “It’s like a workout for your eyelids.” Neither looks thrilled to be here, but they warm up as the interview progresses. Snooki’s hair has blond streaks, stark against the black hair, and she is in very full makeup. Jwoww’s hair is streaked

magenta. She wears leopard-print stilettos with studded heels, tight jeans and a tank top; Jwoww has the sort of figure that if she’s walking and a man driving notices her, traffic accidents are likely. The women, as has been proved on “Jersey Shore,” are not big on censorship. They talk about Jenni’s breasts (surgically enhanced), their not-so-private parts and boyfriends; it’s hard to imagine a taboo topic.

In the new 12-episode show, the women set out to live on their own. They look for apartments in Jersey City, and wind up moving into a former fire station, where the chief and captain’s offices are turned into bedrooms. Though Snooki refers to it as “the city,” and Jersey City is indeed an urban place, it is not The City, which is what most in the New York area are referring to when they say “the city.”

Jumping Destinations in North America Nothing says adrenaline like propelling yourself from the edge of a bridge into the endless oblivion below – especially when the only thing keeping you from your death is a simple bungee. Whether you’re a first-time jumper or a bungee junkie, there’s nothing like finding the coolest destinations to take the plunge. 1. Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge, Colorado. Spanning over the Royal Gorge Route Railway, this suspended bridge over the Arkansas River offers 1053 ft (321 m) of amazing height. It’s an all-time favorite jumping spot for both Americans and world travelers. 2. Navajo Bridge of Marble Canyon, Arizona. This setting high above the Colorado River offers a oneof-a-kind look into the Grand Canyon. The high elevation of the Navajo Bridge makes this a great choice for true adventurers.

3. Bridge to Nowhere, California. This bungee jumping hotspot is located in the Angeles National Forest in Lost Angeles and lets adventurers take the plunge between the walls of a steep canyon toward raging water ten stories below. 4. Perrine Bride, Idaho. This 486-foot drop is a great place to get your feet wet in the sport of bungee jumping. Open year-round, it’s adjacent to the site where Evel Knievel unsuccessfully attempted to jump the canyon on his motorcycle in 1974.

7. Morrison’s Quarry, Ottawa, Canada. This staggering 200 foot jump from the top of a cliff is a must try. Considered the highest in Canada, there’s nothing like plummeting into a aqua blue lagoon.

courage. Get out there!

Keep in mind, most of these sites feature at least one licensed bungee jumping companies that feature either an ankle attachment, body harness or both. Due to the rugged locations of some of these sites, companies may only accept cash. Make sure you check availability beforehand and bring plenty of

5. T-Tower, Las Vegas. At 201 feet with a 171.5 jump platform, this site on the Vegas strip boasts the highest double platform bungee tower in the world. It also features a 20-person air-conditioned passenger lift. 6. Private Bridge, Amboy, WA. Located at the base of the Tum Tum Mountain in Amboy Washington, this phenomenal bungee site is over 20 stories high and is the tallest legal bungee point in the United States.
