She’s an actress, author, designer, wife and a mother of three, ages 5 and under, with one more on the way, but Tori Spelling still finds time to create her own greetings and decorations. On Tuesday, June 26, she brings her passion for the handmade to TLC with the premiere of the competitive reality series “Craft Wars,” for which she is host, executive producer, commentator and mentor to three competing crafters in each episode. “I’ve been crafting my entire life,” says Spelling. “It’s a huge passion of mine. It started when I was little. My mom was always into crafting. She had her gift-wrapping room, and that wasn’t just for show. She actively used it. “I always grew up creating amazing crafts and packages and doing things with her.” The daughter of famed TV producer Aaron Spelling and a star of the hit series “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Spelling could probably pay people to make things for her, but she’d rather do Return R Re Ret etur et turn urn rnit herself.

just 3 weeks before their wedding, a woman (Greta Gerwig) enlists her close friends (Hamish Linklater and Zoe Lister Jones) for a series of adventures she hopes will help her come to terms with approaching 30 as a single woman. (R – 87 minutes)

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’*

their least imaginative, making last year’s catastrophic ‘Cars 2’ look brilliant by comparison. It starts with a surprisingly stale setup and then proceeds to steal story elements from a variety of Disney’s animated adventures. It is certainly not a bad movie by any means, but it falls far below the standards that we have come to expect from the onceinfallible studio.” Grade: C

Joseph: “‘Lola Versus’ tries to be hip. Instead, it is just smug. Coming off the dismal ‘Damsels in Distress,’ Greta Gerwig stars in her second movie this year in which she comes across as the least likeable human being on the planet. Granted, the actress should not be forced to shoulder the blame as that belongs to writer/director Daryl Wein and his co-writer Zoe Lister Jones, who have created a comedy that is neither as funny nor as clever as it thinks it is.” Grade: D

Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them. Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie and Mary Elizabeth Winstead also star. (R – 105 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

‘Brave’ A princess (Kelly Macdonald) who, determined to make her own path in life, defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, the princess must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. (PG – 100 minutes) Joseph: “There is not an original bone in ‘Brave’s’ body. Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Stan: “Writer/director Lorene Scafaria’s theme of what to do in the face of the end of the world from the perspective of preparing for it rather than the usual action/drama/sci-fi approach of preventing it, provides an interesting scenario of ‘food for thought’, in spite of the ‘helterskelter’ sometimes uneven pacing and lackluster performances of some the central characters.” Grade: CJoseph: “Instead of worrying about seeking a friend in her new romantic dramedy, writer/director Lorene Scafaria should have been looking for a better story. The first few minutes of ‘Seeking a Friend for the End of the World’ are quite fascinating. However, as soon as Keira Knightly’s character enters the picture, that fascination dissolves into boredom. The actress is almost like an asteroid, with her appearance marking an end to what, without her or the character she portrays, could have been a creatively solemn motion picture.” Grade: D

‘The Woman in the Fifth’ A college lecturer (Ethan Hawke) flees to Paris after a scandal costs him his job. In the City of Lights, he meets a widow (Kristin Scott Thomas) who might be involved in a series of murders. (R – 85 minutes) Stan: “Featuring a milieu of eccentrically off-center characters with each having issues of their own, ‘The Woman in the Fifth’subtlywith deliberate pacing, meticulously reveals the plot twists and turns, as we as viewers become just as confused as the central character [Ethan Hawke] by events happening all around him. As with traditional European ‘who-done-its’, the more clues we have, the more ‘the plot thickens’ surrounding the mysterious woman [Kristin Scott Thomas]

who just may be the key for those answers. And yes, this reviewer will have to take a second look to satisfy my own curiosity in a quest for those answers…” Grade: C+ Joseph: “‘The Woman in the Fifth’ may present more questions than it does answers, but at least those questions are compelling. The new psychological thriller from writer/ directed Pawel Pawlikowski, based on Douglas Kennedy’s novel, starts off innocently enough. Slowly but surely, though, the movie gets more and more bizarre before becoming downright haunting. Unfortunately, the entire motion picture is plagued with an ambiguity that prevents the viewer from feeling satisfied when all is said and done.” Grade: C

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of motion picture projects past and present.

Actor Anthony Mackie (‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’) By Joseph J. Airdo “In real life, Abraham Lincoln’s close friend was a free man of color named William H. Johnson. They grew up together and when Abraham Lincoln came back from law school and started getting political, he made William H. Johnson his chauffeur and security guard. As they were coming back from the Gettysburg Address, William H. Johnson got smallpox and died.

In the movie Madagascar (2005), the scene where Alex dreams of raining steaks is actually a spoof on the infamous dream scene in American Beauty (1999). historical and the movie is steeped in that history. “But then Timur put his trademark action sequences into it that make it just unreal. It is unlike anything you have ever seen before. Remember when you first saw ‘The Matrix’ and you were like, ‘Wow!’ That is how you feel when you are watching ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.’ It is so much fun and, funny enough, historically accurate, as well.” – Anthony Mackie

“Abraham Lincoln, with money out of his own pocket, paid for William H. Johnson to be buried at Arlington Cemetery. He was the first black man buried there. And on his headstone, Abraham Lincoln put, ‘William H. Johnson – Citizen.’ I get to play William H. Johnson and kill some vampires with Abe Lincoln. “[The director] Timur Bekmambetov is kind of magical in the way that he works. He shot the movie like a biography – beat for beat, moment for moment – like it was an actual film about the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. But that is because it is. A lot of the book that it is based on is very

just putting on a show to calm you down. The manager might pretend to yell at me for a minute, but he’ll pat me on the back the moment you’re out of sight. 7. Combination deals don’t save you money at some theaters. You’d pay the same price if you purchased the items separately. 8. Think you’re saving calories by ordering small popcorn? That “small” popcorn could have been a medium last month.

In the movie Jurassic Park (1993), the glass of water sitting on the dash of the Ford Explorer was made to ripple using a guitar string that was attached to the underside beneath the glass. ... continued from Page 11. As a movie reviewer, I’ve attended screenings all over the Valley. The theaters include the big multiplex theater chains to the smaller theaters and independently owned venues. The item below, as the saying goes, ‘has gone viral’ on the Internet since the fall of 2011. As I read through the items, many seemed logical, some were ‘a maybe’, and a few are a bit preposterous. On prompting from my colleague movie critic David Ramsey, I set out to ‘debunk’, a term I just love from ‘The X-Files’ television series, the validity of the items listed in the article. Who better to assist me for first hand knowledge and experience is Brian Deveny, Chairman of the Arizona Theater Owners Association, and owner of the Sawmill Theaterin Payson, AZ and theSaguaroTheater in Wickenberg, AZ. In a conversation, we talked about each item, point for point. Valuable insight on the intricacies of movie theater management was shared and over the next few weeks we’ll present

‘Readers Digest: 13 Things a Movie Theater Employee Won’t Tell You’ By Ilana Strauss 1. Why does a movie theater smell so good? The popcorn has chemicals in it to make its aroma fill the theater. 2. “Extreme Digital” is actually lower quality than IMAX digital. We use it because it’s easier to maintain. 3. For the first month or two of screening, money from ticket sales goes to movie studios. Theaters rely on concession stands to make money. That’s why concessions are overpriced. Popcorn costs almost nothing to make. 4. I know all the methods you use to sneak in. I just don’t always care enough to kick you out for it. 5. The only foods I trust are the popcorn, drinks, and boxed candy. I wouldn’t eat the pretzels, hot dogs, or nachos.

10. No, I can’t give you extra cups. Everything is inventoried at the end of the night. 11. Your suspicions are correct. Sometimes I sweep excess food under the seats. Movies often end every few minutes. Sometimes, three or more screenings end at the same time. I don’t always have time to clean everything up. 12 Yes, movies start late. But they almost always end on time – otherwise, the ushers wouldn’t know when to clean up. Theaters tell you to come in early so you have time to watch commercials and previews. 13. Popcorn keeps for a day or two. Many customers confuse warm with fresh. SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN

“Seven Pounds” (2008): Smith has to play a lot close to the chest, and does it well, in this drama about a man who truly changes the lives of several strangers. “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006):

Smith was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for being as vulnerable as he’s been on screen to date, and for teaming with real-life son Jaden in the true tale of a single father and aspiring stockbroker. “I, Robot” (2004): A mix of sci-fi and satire, which usually serves Smith well, worked for him in Isaac Asimov’s tale of a detective trying to determine whether a robot is a killer. “Ali” (2001): Smith transformed himself impressively in director Michael Mann’s biography of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

Learning to Fly By Linda Boyd “I’m learning to fly but I ain’t got wings Coming down is the hardest thing” by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn I always liked this song, especially the fact that so many argue about what it means. Is it about drugs and “coming down” from a high or literally a pilot flying a plane since landing is often considered “the hardest thing” or a myriad of other interpretations? How on earth can I be connecting this with video poker anyway? Well, my view is that gambling in a casino, regardless of your game, can be a high of sorts to many, meaning it’s a form of escape from everyday life and worries. How about coming down? For some it’s really difficult to leave “La La Land”, especially if all that’s left in your pocket is the lint. So here are some tips to bring reality into play and make the trip home almost as much fun as the ride out there. Reality Check: Many gamblers have had embarrassing daydreams about winning the lottery or making an over-the-top killing on their favorite machine or table game. But when you’re playing for real with your hardearned cash it’s time to get serious. That means using mathematical data that gives the expected return (ER) for the game along with the variance or risk to your bankroll. These figures are readily available in my book “The Video Poker Edge” or on tutorial software. If you choose to play 8/5 DoubleDouble Bonus (8/5 DDB), for example, the ER is 96.7861% and the variance is 41.99487. This translates to a high risk game that returns less than 97%, so don’t even think about accusing the casino of rigging the machines. You’ve selected a game that strongly favors the house. On the other hand, if you choose, say 8/5 JOB (8/5 Jacks or Better) with a progressive royal around 6,000 coins (that’s just $1,500 on a quarter machine) then you have a fighting chance. Of course few people are walking computers so you’ll need a little help from your friends. According to Zamzow: The best friend to a video poker player is WinPoker software, written by Dean Zamzow (www. videopokerpractice.com) Here you will learn the mathematically accurate holds for each game and you can easily change the pay schedule on your software to match the one in your favorite casino. Even if you’re too impatient to practice on a regular basis you will head for the casino knowing the key plays on the game you selected. In other words whether you should hold the pair of aces in DDB or two pair and what to hold with the same deal in 9/6 JOB. You can even have a hold question answered by preselecting a dealt hand. I consider this the best tutorial software on the market because

not only does it have a lot of whistles and bells, making it enjoyable, but, unlike other products, it is 100% accurate. Some tutorial software teaches a few incorrect holds to make it easier to remember. If you just want pay schedule tables including both the game’s variance and ER you’ll find free removable ones in my book for most video poker games. Know When to Say When: Once you’ve lost all either your psychological or real budget can handle you should stop feeding money to the monster. Even if you didn’t get much play on your bankroll and your friends want to stay longer, it’s best to stop and become a spectator when your pre-determined session money is gone. Even if you still have some cash left but your consecutive losses are making you miserable, you should call it a day. A bad experience could bode well for future decisions. For example, you may decide to quit playing a high variance game when half your bankroll is lost and switch to a more conservative game in the future. Final Thoughts: When you’re gambling and all is going your way it’s a great feeling, like flying high without a care in the world. But, just like the song says, “coming down is the hardest thing”, and that’s even when you’re winning. That’s why you hear so many horror stories about players being way ahead and then giving it all back. So you really do need to learn how to fly when wagering in a casino and how to come down from the high without a crash landing. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) as well as her You Tube video with ACG (“How to Find the Best-Paying Video Poker Machines”) The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle - available at amazon.com, bookstores or Square One Publishers. www. squareonepublishers.com Toll Free: 877900-BOOK

The True Cost of “Free” Email My name is Justin Patrick, CEO of Virtual Office Global and Xyven Information Technologies. I’ve been around technology for a very long time, building my first computer at around 7 years old, configuring my first corporate network at around the age of 15 and riding the wave of technology evolution as we all moved from prodigy and BBS boards to the internet and the dot com boom. But I’ve never seen anything as blatantly atrocious as what is going on now to just about everyone while they just sit there and take it. Not only do they sit there and take it; they say, “Thank you sir, may I have another.” I’m talking about free online email and data services and everything else that is all over the web and free for us to gobble up as hungry consumers looking for the next great deal. How do you think these services are paid for? Why would these companies be so nice as to provide everyone with every service for free? When you click the box with the small writing in it that has the “I Accept” button at the bottom, chances are you are agreeing to much more than you think. Usually, you are authorizing access to the company to dig through anything and everything you do while using that service. This includes your email, your contacts, your files and even your comments or browser history. They collect every bit of information that can be found about everyone and sell it off to the highest bidder, the government and anyone else who will pay 2 cents for pieces of you. This data is also used to build profiles about you and your friends to more accurately deliver banner ads and spam. I’m guessing that people must not be aware that this is going on. Why else would everyone continue to invite strangers in to rummage through their personal records and conversations that are contained in these free email accounts to see if there is any valuable information to sell or profile you with. By using these services you invite corporations and even the government to a scavenger hunt through everything you have ever done, while saying, “We are going to go-ahead and grab everything we find, in-case it’s

What’s even more frightening is that companies are using these services too! Medical practices with patient records information stored in free mail and document storage accounts and I’ve even seen attorney’s running full-out murder trials through free g-mail and Google apps accounts. There are also financial advisors that keep client portfolio information and bank records in these services, simply because it’s free What’s even more frightening is that companies are using these services too! Medical practices with patient records information stored in free mail and document storage accounts and I’ve even seen attorney’s running full-out murder trials through free g-mail and Google apps accounts. There are also financial advisors that keep client portfolio information and bank records in these services, simply because it’s free. As far as the courts are concerned since it’s a server looking through the information and not a human; mining the data for profit does not violated attorney client privilege ethics or violate information privacy laws. This is why most businesses are not concerned; they either are unaware of this, or say, “Well, its not illegal” – Now I don’t know about you; but that’s just not good enough for me. I want to keep my information private and secure and would expect the same from companies that I do business with as a consumer. I see people doing extreme things every day to make sure they keep information private, locking their phones, lock and set alarms on their houses and file cabinets set up anonymous free email accounts… Wait; that last one doesn’t seem to fit anymore now does it. I almost fell out of my chair laughing the other day when I asked a person for his email address and he said *firstname*private@gmail. com. This is really what prompted me to start with this article. Because, as it seems to me, people are unaware this is going on. What free services do you use? What about the businesses you work with? Ask an attorney to translate one of these privacy policies to you. You will be frightened; heck, your attorney will be frightened too, he’s probably using the same service. Join me again next week as I continue to take you through a no-nonsense view of your technical world.

It’s All You Hoped It Would Be Yet, All It’s Never Been By AZ Weekly In case you live in a cave and haven’t heard, there’s an all-new show in town, brought to us by the dream-weavers at Cirque du Soleil…KOOZA! (We put the exclamation point in because it is really just that good). Why is the show so good? Here’s why: First of all, they’ve figured out how to air condition a giant tent in the middle of the 110 degree desert. We expected it to be warm and balmy. It wasn’t. KOOZA! Second, there’s no bad seats. No matter where you sit you will be amazingly close to the action…and there’s lots of action. KOOZA!

Next, the performances are everything you want from a Cirque production. Stunning, Scary, Beautiful, Unbelievable and Death Defying. Some parts even had the audience afraid to gaze upon it. The Spinning Wheel of Death brought forth screams of terror from all around the arena while the high-wire stopped our hearts. The uncanny athleticism of the performers will astound you. More incredible is the realization that they perform these miracles every single day. KOOZA!

July is Educator Appreciation Month at MIM Arizona Teachers Visit MIM Free of Charge in July The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) invites Arizona K-12 educators to explore more than 5,000 instruments and artifacts from every country in the world for free during July. Current Arizona teachers, school and district administrators, teacher’s aides, and homeschool educators will be granted complimentary admission with a schoolor district-issued ID, or (for homeschool educators) an affidavit of intent. With substantial cuts to arts education programs in schools across Arizona, MIM offers educators a way to introduce students to the arts in a fun and engaging manner. MIM’s exhibits provide an array of learning opportunities for topics ranging from music and geography to social studies and even science. More than 45,000 students and teachers have toured MIM since the inception of the school field-trip program in October 2010. All school group tours align with Arizona’s educational standards and include additional curricula for teachers to use with their students pre- and post-visit. MIM currently offers four school group tours and

will be adding a new one in August. School tours vary by age-group, but each tour can be customized to fit a certain grade level or educational objective. The first tour of the 2012-2013 academic year will be on August 1. Educators can take an in-depth look at MIM’s educational offerings for the 20122013 school year during the museum’s Educator Preview Days on July 28 and 29 and on August 25. Programming will include information about field trips (both docentled and self-guided tour options), pre- and post-visit curricula, Student Signature Workshops, and Artist Residency Programs. The preview days will also feature a performance by Tetra, one of the 2012-2013 Artists in Residence; light refreshments; the opportunity to tour MIM’s galleries; and a preview of MIM’s newest school tour option. To register, visit http://www.zoomerang. com/Survey/WEB22FVU6SQ7J8. Seating for the Educator Preview Days is limited. Educators who share their e-mail address with MIM during July will be entered into a drawing to win a prize from the Museum Store. Additionally, educators will receive a 10 percent discount on non-sale books and gifts at the Museum Store throughout the month. For more information about MIM and its educational offerings, visit theMIM. org.

The Billionaire’s Vinegar By Josh Moffitt – www.ArizonaLandBaron.com Well, it is getting HOT! This weekend I am planning on spending a weekend in. Inside with the A/C cranked up on high, that is. I am going to cozy up on the couch and enjoy a good book…a book about wine, while enjoying a glass of wine… or three. That book will be Pandora’s Bottle, a novel about the world’s most expensive bottle of wine ever sold at auction, the guy that purchased it and how he decided to drink it. I can’t tell you about this book because I haven’t read it yet.

Doug Pike lives in Scottsdale and is a 20-year member of the National Cartoonists Society. He is the author of Gone With The Wine, The Grapes of Laugh, and the co-author, with Harry Margulies, of Less Than A Full Deck.

I have read the Billionaire’s Vinegar, which is the whole story surrounding this fabled bottle, and it is one of my favorite wine books. It reads like an adventure/mystery which is pretty good for non-fiction. It is full of twists and turns. In 1985, at an auction by Christie’s of London, a 1787 bottle of Château Lafite Bordeaux—one of a cache of bottles unearthed in a bricked-up Paris cellar and supposedly owned by Thomas Jefferson, sold for $156,000. The winning bidder was a member of the Forbes family. The bottle’s authenticity comes into question as well as the integrity of Hardy Rodenstock, the dealer who discovered the cache of extremely old

wines. The story follows Jefferson’s history with wine and his time spent in France and questions if the story of the bottle is actually plausible. We get an insight into the world of the ultra-rich wine collectors and connoisseurs to see what it is like to actually drink these 100-year-old bottles of wine and the bacchanalian parties that go along with them. There is a discussion on the various techniques of faking wine and the bottle even gets tested by a Nuclear Physicist. Is it a con or is it real? There is a movie based on the book in development and it is rumored that Brad Pitt will be starring in it. Read it first, the book is always better than the movie. Download The Billionaire’s Vinegar to your Kindle from Amazon for $11.99.

Ask for these wines at finer restauarants Valley-wide www.distinctiveitalianwines.com

You’ve been staring at the wine list and all you want is to choose a wine you’ll like. You know what you like but the list or label doesn’t seem to tell you enough about the wine. You’re not alone! People ask me all the time “How can I be sure that I’m going to like this wine?” You know you like Chardonnay without that oaky sensation, and there on the list is a wine called Conundrum. Well, doesn’t that just say it all? It’s time to face the challenge. First, since wine comes from grapes and you know you can always rememberat least a few types of grapes that you like, start there. Do you like such grapes as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir? You’ll surely find wines from these grapes on the list. When choosing an unfamiliar label where the grape varietal is not clearly indicated to you (like the Conundrum wine), just ask the sommelier, server, or wine shop staff to tell you the grape. Sometimes it will be a blend of several grapes. With blends it is hard to be sure which grape will prevail in the final taste, so when in unfamiliar territory, I personally am a one-grape wine woman.

Recently I was at aFrench Burgundy wine-tasting. Everyone got cards listing each wine, wine region, producer and grape composition. I found it interesting they listed the grapes, since in Burgundy, nearly allreds are Pinot Noir andpractically all whites are Chardonnay. When asked to explain, the organizer said simply, “Not everybody knows Burgundy whites are made from Chardonnay and we want to help them understand!”

Fear & Loathing in Missouri By Nathan Brugnone, Nathan@ AZWineMakers.com What an awful state. I’ve just returned from an unexpected crosscountry trip to Michigan—there by jet and back to Arizona by six-cylinder, super-charged wheels. The trip back was some twisted version of “Sideways” without any f’ing Merlot, unfortunately. No, my copilot and I would have glossy-eyed lusted over the name “Merlot” on any bottle. Instead, we encountered wines donning names like “Catawba”, “Seyval”, and “Chardonel.” And these are not artful

There’s a rumor that Arizona has a harsh growing environment, and this is true. But the Midwest, Missouri, in particular, presents a terrain that makes Arizona look like Portugal or Italy. Nothing good can grow in that godforsaken hell-scape, Missouri. I felt so bad for the winemakers there that I purchased a bottle of Pink Catawba. The memory still makes me shudder. Leavesome gas station boxwine in the heat for 3 days and you’ll get an idea of the horror of this wine. Here’s where I plug some AZ wine: try something from Sonoita, like the latest from Keif-Joshua or Canelo Hills, where you can taste not only the passion, but also the agreeableness of the region. Sorry, Missouri. Maybe next time…

BEER! Independence Day and Hot Dogs July 4th is next week and that means a lot of things. Of course, it is a day to sit home and enjoy the company of family and friends. Above all, it means a celebration of our nation’s independence, or as John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail: I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. Although interestingly enough, John Adams wrote this letter on July 3rd, 1776 and was referencing July 2nd not the 4th. So, why July 4th and not July 2nd? July 4th commemorates the publication of the Declaration of Independence although the Continental Congress secretly voted to declare independence on July 2nd. Enough history, let’s figure out how to

tie this in with beer. As you probably already know, the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition is held on July 4th. Last year’s winner consumed 62 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes. Even this contest has its roots in patriotism. Supposedly the competition started on July 4th, 1916 when four immigrants held a hot dog eating contest at Coney Island in New York to settle an argument over who was the most patriotic. The event grew from there into what we see live on ESPN every year.

New York Dog – The classic, a nice dog with just mustard and maybe sauerkraut and onions. Let’s go with the Coney Island Lager. What better way to pay tribute to Coney Island and the hot dog eating competition than with its namesake beer. This beer eliminates any flavor battles. The caramel malts will help to bring out the sweetness in the sauerkraut and onions, while backing up the flavor of the dog and the mustard properly. Try also, North Coast Scrimshaw, Left Hand Polestar.

So now we have hot dogs, and from there it is a short leap to beer. My thought is that we should talk about pairing hot dogs and beer. Here are some different styles of hot dogs and some suggestions for pairings.

South Philly Dog – Made with grilled onions, maybe a little grilled red and green pepper, and of course Cheese Wiz. This wiener version of a cheesesteak goes great with refreshing pale ale. So we are going to suggest Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale. A beer with a good balance of malt and hops with hints of citrus to perk up the grilled onions. The saltiness of the hot dog is washed away with the pleasant bitterness of the beer and the hops help to cut through the richness of the Wiz. Besides all that, the red, white and blue Dale’s can is especially appropriate for the day. Try also, Great Divide DPA, AlesmithXtra Pale Ale Chicago Dog – The other classic hot dog. Topped with chopped onions, diced tomatoes, dill pickle, relish, mustard, pickled peppers and celery salt, this dog has a lot of flavor going on. So you need a beer with a full body to give a solid foundation. Big Sky Moose Drool offers just that. The malty base of Moose Drool will put some sweetness into the mix and tone down the intensity of the mustard and peppers while still allowing their flavors to shine. Try also, Abita Turbo Dog, Lost Coast Downtown Brown.

Chili Cheese Dog – Made with chili, shredded cheese and diced onions. I am liking New Belgium Belgo IPA for this dog. Hear me out on this one… some of the subtle flavors that come out of this beer will help to tone down the heat of the chili, as will the hops in it. The Belgian yeast brings some fruitiness that allows the flavors to meld in interesting ways. Try also, Bell’s Oberon, Great Divide DPA California Dog – Topped with avocado, lime juice, chopped tomatoes and raw onions, this dog is a bit of a challenge. Pair it with a SanTan Hopshock IPA. The lime and avocado will pair amazingly well with the hop flavor from this beer. The

herbal and citrus qualities of the beer will help to boost the flavor of the milder ingredients; and the hops will help with the richness of the avocado. All in all, this combination makes for a spectacularly powerful meal. Try also, Green Flash West Coast IPA, Bridgeport Hop Czar Hawaiian Dog – And now for something completely different. This dog recipe is made with pineapple, chipotle may and a little bit of coconut shavings. I tempted to suggest SanTan Mr. Pineapple Wheat for obvious reasons, but I think it needs something a little different. What it needs is a beer that can complement the tropical flavors of the pineapple

NORTHERN EXPOSURE, California Beer Style!

Hello again beer lovers, today let’s begin where we left off last week with our trip to California. After Sierra Nevada Beer Camp was finished, Jim Lolli and I set our sights on the many other breweries in northern California. Our travels began with a short trip to Bear Republic Brewing in Healdsburg CA. and a glass of freshest pint of Racer5 IPA money can buy. I must also mention the Beer and Bacon Mac n’ Cheese. Heaven! Next up was Russian River Brewing. Home of the now famous Pliny the Elder Imperial IPA. We ordered the Beer Flight and were amazed to see 20 different beers appear before us! Everything from sours to IPA’s and Stouts to Saisons were here for taking. I must also mention that the place was packed and that the Pliny tap handler never seemed to be in the closed position as people were lining up for it. It’s a wonderful beer although I don’t know that I would wait a half hour for a pint of anything. From that point a short drive to Petaluma CA. and Lagunitas Brewing was next. A private tour of the new brew house and a pint of Waldo Double IPA was just what the doctor ordered. The outdoor patio was beautiful and the BBQ and live band was had the house rockin. The best pulled pork sandwich I may have ever had!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Saving the best for last, we finished up at Moylan’s Brewing in Novato CA. for a Hop sickle and their famous Ruben sandwich. You might imagine that by this point we were spent and you’d be right BUT how smart are we? Our hotel was right next to the brewery! Now that my friends is a full day of beer and quite a bit of Northern Exposure! June 21st, 2012 - June 27th, 2012

or cotijo cheese, tomatillosalsa or red chili sauce, pinto beans, mayonnaise, ketchup and/or mustard, and served on a Mexican bolillo roll and often with a fresh-roasted chili. You’ve got so much going on here that it is tempting to play it safe and enjoy it with a nice amber style, maybe Grand Canyon Amber. The balance of malt and hops will allow each flavor and texture of the dog to take its solo at the right time. I’m going

to stretch my taste buds a little bit here and suggest Red Barn from The Lost Abbey. The intensity of the beer matches up with the intense flavors of the dog so that rather than letting the ingredients solo, they end up in a nice duet. Try also, Alaskan Amber, Green Flash Rayon Vert.

“Bigger is Not Always Better” My all-time favorite place to go for happy hour sushi has got to be Geisha A Go Go, this place does it right. This is a smaller restaurant so it makes it look poppin’ all the time, but you will not be disappointed. The interior is all black and green with low seating at the upper tables. The decoration for the walls is flavored infused sake that changes often, along with James Morrision, Sid Vicious, and Jimi Hendrix for the pleasing of your eyes. Every single day they offer happy hour from 3pm-7pm and all day on Sundays. They have half off appetizers, house maki rolls, infused sake, and the specialty cocktails, which makes for an awesome meal without hurting your wallet. I am a sucker for sake bombers, and it is such a social thing, and they are only $4.50 with a 22oz beer. I tend to like crazy stuff when it comes to sushi but I love the veggie rolls because they use Japanese root vegetables, and it is only about $3. My personal favorite server is Ashley and she just takes care of me every time, pours your first sake for you and everything (since in Japanese culture, it is bad luck to pour your own the first time). Sundays are the best time to go but it gets packed fast so get there early if you would like a spot. 7150 E. 6th Ave. Scottsdale, AZ 85250 www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule

Jennifer Nettles of “Duets” on ABC

Q: If you were launching your career now,

would you consider being a contestant on “Duets”?

A:

You know, it’s so hard to say. I would hope that in some ways, I would be open to it. I’ve always been that way in my career, this being a current example of exploring new things and doing what it takes to get material heard.

Kim’s Corner Joe Jackson fans can pick up his latest, The Duke on Tuesday June 26th. The Duke is a decidedly unconventional salute to Duke Ellington, demonstrating the timeless brilliance of his classic compositions while showcasing Jackson’s sublime skills as an arranger, instrumentalist and vocal interpreter. Although it’s only the second time he’s recorded an album not comprised of his own compositions, The Duke is nonetheless a deeply personal project for Jackson, whose longstanding affinity for Ellington’s pioneering spirit has served as a key inspiration throughout his own three-decades-plus career. The Cult, the band that brought you “Fire Woman”, “Love Removal Machine”, “Lil Devil” and “She Sells Sanctuary” released their first album in five years. Choice of Weapon came out last month and they are hitting The Marquee Theatre on Friday June 22nd along with Against Me! and The Icarus Line. The Marquee is located at 730 N. Mill Ave. in Tempe. Check out www. luckymanonline.com for details.

Prince fans will want to keep an eye out for a tribute from Las Vegas called Purple Reign. They packed the showroom at Talking Stick 3 nights in a row, and put on a fabulous show – complete with several costume changes, appearances by Morris Day and Jerome (The Time) and Lenny Kravitz, all the slick dance moves, high notes and “shrieks” that were spot-on, several splits (one of His Majesty’s signature moves) and the (ahem) stage antics from “Darling Nikki”. Check out www. purplereign.net or www.talkingstickresort.com for other great acts, and keep an eye out for these guys next time they’re in town!

App Spotlight by Justin Patrick

In the spirit of Fathers Day and for my first ever gadget spotlight and AppOf-The-Week, I want to share with you a solution for the extreme multitasker. Finally, you can watch netflix while using your Bluetooth headset to carry on a phone call and it wont interfere with your ballistics calculations while you hunt terrorists. Even if you are shooting at distances that require you to take into account the coriolis effect, there are several apps to choose from! The detail that has been put into these programs is amazing, allowing you to choose the exact type of bullet you are using or even enter in your custom powder and metallurgy specs if you make your own bullets. Allowing the app to use your GPS, you can have it incorporate atmospheric conditions for your location into the calculation. Record your hits in shot history and anylize the results as you dial in your

scope for a bulls-eye every-time. A few companies have also created Mounts for your mobile device that attach directly to your rifle for convenient access. There is even a resistive glove that allows you to interact with the touch screen while staying in full tactical gear. My personal favorite of these apps is Ballistic, by JBM Ballistics. You can find out more info on this app in the apple app store or here at their site http://ballistic.zdziarski.com/. It looks like most Mounts have been discontinued shortly after release; but there are still many enthusiasts that have found work-arounds.
