When Mary’s husband of 26 years

passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked “Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” When Mary replied, “I don’t know.” Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene it’s becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. That’s where Great Expectations Scottsdale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Expectations has perfected a suite of matchmaking services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Unlike other dating services that entrust applicants to input their

own data, Great Expectations professionals meet every potential client in person to interview and screen each applicant. Recently, Great Expectations Scottsdale announced Tammy Smith, who has been with the company since 1998, as their new Center Director. Tammy has had the pleasure of meeting and matching multiple couples through the years. “At Great Expectations we personally meet and interview each member so they are pre-screened before they can join. We also run background checks on each member. When you join an online dating site, you don’t know who you’re connecting with,” says Tammy. “We find it’s best for our clients to not be surprised by who they’re meeting. We take our own photos and we provide videotaped conversations as well. We will be as involved in your experience as much as you want us to be, acting as a personal dating liaison and coaching you along the way.” In addition to pre-screening each potential client, Great Expectations provides ample opportunities for members to meet like-minded singles in whichever environment they’re most comfortable. “We hold a variety of fun, safe, singles events to help get you out into the Great Expectations community,” says Ashley AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Fox, the Great Expectations Scottsdale Event Coordinator. “After you become a member you are invited to every event from speed dating, hiking, cooking classes, casino nights, masquerade balls, wine tastings and much more!” So say goodbye to blind dates, awkward set-ups and scary online experiences. and contact Great Expectations today. It’s safe, private, experienced matchmaking made easy. Take the first step today. Mary & Gene have the same thoughts as many of our success stories about Great Expectations: “It worked for us! If it wasn’t for Great Expectations and its staff we wouldn’t have found each other!” And to anyone considering joining Great Expectations they add: “What do you have to lose?”

Joseph: “If you do not see at least a little of yourself in Bud Clayman, the filmmaker and subject of the documentary ‘OC 87: The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger’s Movie,’ then you probably do not have many mirrors in your house. The new motion picture is an extremely eye-opening experience, especially because of the many ways in which the viewer can relate to Clayman’s daily dilemma. Granted, Clayman’shang-ups are a bit more extreme than most, but there is an inherent universality to them that allows the average viewer to gain a little insight into their own neuroses.” Grade: C

A grown man (Mark Wahlberg) must deal with the cherished teddy bear (Seth MacFarlane) who came to life as the result of a childhood wish and has refused to leave his side ever since. Mila Kunis, Giovanni Ribisi, Patrick Warburton and Joel McHale also star. (R – 100 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

Soundbite Spotlight

‘People Like Us’ A man (Chris Pine) is tasked with delivering $150,000 of his deceased father’s fortune to the sister (Elizabeth Banks) he has never met. Olivia Wilde, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Favreau, Mark Duplass and Philip Baker Hall also star. (PG-13 – 100 minutes) Stan: “In spite of a ‘heavy handed’ approach to draw us into the dilemma faced by the central character (Chris Pine), the underlying theme of reconciliation and acceptance of the ‘sins of the father’, manages to find its way to our own hearts because of the poignant screenplay by Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert.”Grade: C Joseph: “‘People Like Us’ is very, very touching. Unfortunately, it is also very, very trite. That is to say that the new drama that Alex Kurtzman directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert manipulates viewers into experiencing emotions rather than allowing them to feel said emotions organically. Fortunately, the characters and the actors who portray them are inherently likeable, encouraging viewers to open up their hearts in spite of the movie’s melodrama.” Grade: C

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of motion picture projects past and present.

Filmmaker Bud Clayman (‘OC87’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I was in a writers’ group sponsored by the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill and the teacher said, ‘Let’s go around the table and choose subjects for an essay.’ I chose therapy and wrote an essay about how it had empowered me. I read the essay out loud and somebody next to me said that therapy had empowered him, too. “I had been looking for some type of film to do and I thought that it was a great idea for a documentary. I was going to interview people about their experiences in therapy and how therapy had empowered them or disempowered them. I worked on the script for about a year but it did not really work out that well. That is when I contacted Scott Johnston. “Scott had been the program director at Project Transition – a treatment facility at which I spent 8 years – and he ended up being one of the directors on ‘OC87.’ He hooked me onto the

idea of recovery from mental illness as in the way that an alcoholic would recover from alcoholism. That gave the film a more personal slant. “Emotionally, I feel sometimes like I am the only one out there who has these feelings. But on an intellectual level, I know from what therapists have told me that everybody has thoughts like these. It is just how they deal with them and how their mind processes them. I hope, as I begin to experience more of my feelings, that this becomes an emotional connection as well.” – Bud Clayman

Filmmaker Lynn Shelton (‘Your Sister’s Sister’) By Joseph J. Airdo “If there is a message to the film, for me it would be that we are all far from perfect. We all have flaws. We all make mistakes in our lives. Some are small and some are giant but they all come from a place of well meaning and a good heart. My characters are really trying their best yet they are still screwing up. I am hoping that people root for them regardless because that is what makes us human. “There are times in your life when you have to face the reality of who you actually are and come to grips with that. These are delicate moments in our lives – months of transition or limbo. Losing somebody that you love and grieving that person can be one of those moments. I liked that as the starting point for [Mark Duplass’] character. “I like improvisation. My last film ‘Humpday’ consisted of 100 percent improvised dialogue. In this case, because I had [Rosemarie DeWitt] and [Emily Blunt] who were not as well-versed in that kind of working, I had 70 pages of dialogue written out but I asked them not to memorize the

I asked them to instead trust their instincts and allow themselves live out each scene as their character. “I learned that you can very successfully replace an actor in this kind of project – even if you have spent 8 months building a character with another actor – as long as you hand the backstory bible over to them and allow them to put their own stamp on the character. I also found out that you can shoot a movie out of order – even if you are improvising. None of that is necessarily going to doom a project. Pawlikowski – who prefers that his film, based on Douglas Kennedy’s novel, not be classified as a thriller – had been thinking about making a movie about mental illness for quite a while. After having read the source material, he believed that it would be a good starting point for the project. That is to say that the filmmaker essentially turned the tale on its head. As a result, he created something that he likens to a poem in that it is largely influenced by the viewer’s state of mind. Pawlikowski never intended “The Woman in the Fifth” to be viewed as a puzzle that needs to be pieced together in order to decipher the complete and singularly correct picture. Instead, he saw it as something that could be interpreted in many different ways. In other words, he advises audiences to simply let themselves go while watching “The Woman in the Fifth.” The perfect example of this is the way in which Paris is portrayed in

the motion picture – dark and gray. Pawlikowski acknowledges that it is quite different than how we typically imagine the City of Lights. Yet, he believes that such a dramatic change in perception can happen with any city at any time. It all comes back to one’s state of mind. Pawlikowski said that, with the right mood, even the brightest smiles on people’s faces can appear ambiguous or even threatening. The truth always lies within the eye of the beholder.

Special Feature ‘The Truth is Out There’, Part 2’ By Stan Robinson In the coming weeks, I’ll pass along responses to each of the items in the article ‘Readers Digest: 13 Things a Movie Theater Employee Won’t Tell You’ by Ilana Strauss. As I spoke to my

colleagues about the article, a milieu of responses was given. What started out as a light follow up to an item I read, has become an ‘eye opening’ revelation on theater ownership and management along with the intricacies of operation. Spending multiple hours each week in various movie theaters throughout the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area, Brian Deveny, theater owner (since 1975) and Chairmen of the Arizona Theater Owners Association; David Ramsey, movie critic (since 1994) and President of the Phoenix Film Critics Society; and Stan Robinson, movie reviewer (since 2006) and Film Columnist with AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine, share this insight… 1. Why does a movie theater smell so good? The popcorn has chemicals in it to make its aroma fill the theater. Brian: “Popcorn is popped at such a high temperature, and it’s a huge volume that you would never be able to replicate that in your home unless you had a real popcorn popper! Unfortunately people think that a popcorn popper is a microwave, but its not. The other thing is, there are three different kinds of oil you can use to pop your popcorn in a movie theater. There’s coconut oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil. Canola oil is obviously the best for you, sunflower is OK, and coconut oil is probably not the best thing to pop your popcorn, but, it’s a double edge sword, that’s what smell’s the best! Its not the butter flavoring as some might think.” David: “I have never thought popcorn was that great a smell.” Stan: “Seems highly unlikely, logically the cooking of foods generates its own distinctive aroma without adding the smell factor!” 2. “Extreme Digital” is actually lower quality than IMAX digital. We use it because it’s easier to maintain.

popcorn. In January 2012, I was paying ‘x’ amount for a 50 lbs. bag of popcorn kernels, from January ‘till yesterday, the price of that same 50 lbs. bag has risen in price by $8.50 and that’s since January! The cost of the oils used to pop it has gone up dramatically. The price of chocolate has also skyrocketed; so much so that I’ve removed the slower moving chocolate itemsbecause there’s not profit in them anymore.

Stan: “From my experience of over 25 years of working in media production, its like trying to compare apples to oranges, they’re so very different, making the comparison a bit ludicrous!”

“While we’re talking about concession stand profits, I will tell you that the most profitable item in any theater in the United States and probably the world, there’s one thing that has the most profit. It use to be ice tea but that’s gone up too, but also cups, lids, and straws, all that has to be taken into consideration as well. The one single item that is ‘the’ most profitable percentage wise is, and, I will speak for every theater owner in the country is, [dramatic pause] bottled water! If it weren’t for bottled water, I wouldn’t have enough gas to make it to the screenings (with a chuckle)!”

3. For the first month or two of screening, money from ticket sales goes to movie studios. Theaters rely on concession stands to make money. That’s why concessions are overpriced. Popcorn costs almost nothing to make.

David: “Bottled water is what I drink when I go to the theatre. Whoever the source was for the original article obviously had no idea what they were talking about. I am guessing they were a ticket-taker at a chain theatre.”

Brian: “The highest percentage we pay for a film is generally only in the ‘first two weeks’, not the ‘first two months’. After the third week forward, it’s reduced, the first two weeks is when you’re paying the most for a movie. Concessions are over priced because we’re paying the film companies more than we’ve ever paid before, that’s because films cost more to make. Usually the percentage we pay is relative to what the film cost to make in some instances.

Stan: “I whole heartedly agree with David on the ‘source’ for the original article! After Brian’s insight I’ll never look at the most prominent feature upon entering a movie theater, the concession stand, in the same way again, which, by the way, is a good thing!”

David: “They use it because they don’t have a license to use IMAX nor the equipment.”

“The thought that popcorn cost me almost nothing to make, made me furious! The raw popcorn kernels have skyrocketed in cost because we are having global warming, hurricanes, floods, and all of that affects the cost of

Brian: “IMAX digital is very; very good quality and it would be really hard to compare any other digital that’s on the mainstream market to IMAX digital! That’s like saying I want to show you, side by side, the similarities between a Honda Accord and say a low-end Rolls Royce. With them side by side, they both have headlights, and they both have taillights, rear view mirrors, windshield wipers, and that’s about as far as you can go! To say that we use it because its easier to maintain is like saying that ‘I’ll drive the Honda Accord, but I won’t drive the Rolls Royce, because its easier to maintain. A statement like that is totally absurd!”

Blackjack Etiquette By T.J. Jorgensen

Blackjack Etiquette, by definition, is an unwritten code of common courtesies for Blackjack players. Gamblers, as a general rule, are extremely superstitious, and if there is a sudden change in their luck for the worst, any new element will get the blame. There are no mathematical statistics to back up any players’ claims that a certain event will change the flow of cards from good to bad. However, if you want to avoid being blamed for other players’ bad luck, follow these simple practices, and you will always be a welcome addition to any blackjack game. 1. Ask Permission. When approaching a game already in progress, ask the other

players seated at the table if they mind if you join. This is the polite way to enter a game. That way, if the cards turn for the worse, the other players can only blame themselves. If players have been winning prior to your arrival, and you fail to ask permission, be ready for some nasty glares, and evil looks, if the cards turn bad. The other players may not say anything, but trust me they are not thinking happy thoughts about you. If you sit down, and the very first hand the dealer receives blackjack, I would hate to be you. With the addition of a new player mid-shoe, the others players will blame you, if the flow of cards changes for the worse. 2. Don’t split 10s without asking. There are very few things that you can do as a blackjack player that will draw such an adverse reaction from the other players at the table, as splitting a pair of 10s. If you feel the need to do so, ask the other players if they mind. That way, if you get their consent, and it does cause them to lose, at least they all won’t join together and form a lynch mob on your behalf. If you have a strong desire to split a winning hand of 20, you might want to wait until you are the only player at the table. I personally am of the opinion that it is your

money, play however you want. However, the majority of blackjack players don’t share my view. 3. Don’t be rude. If you have the desire to smoke at the table, at least ask the other players if they mind. I was playing once with a delightful elderly gentleman, who was wheelchair bound, and required oxygen. A new player was guilty of one of the most rude and most-inconsiderate acts I have ever witnessed in some 30 years of playing. He sat down beside the elderly gentleman and lights up a cigarette. It’s obvious that the man requires pure oxygen to sustain life, and this idiot is blowing smoke in his face. I thought the man was going to die right there. Please, use some common sense. 4. Tip the Dealer. The Blackjack dealers are paid minimum hourly wage, so the majority of their income is from tips. If you have a winning session, take care of the dealer. They will be much friendlier the next time you see them. You can also place a small bet next to yours for the dealer, many times the dealer will wait to try to convince you what the correct play might be, hit or stay – some dealers will even ask, “are you sure you want to hit that?” hoping the player would make the right choice- after all they have a stake in

the final outcome, and will almost always “thank you” for the bet – win or lose. 5. Playing 2 Hands. If there is a spot open next to your seat, and you decide to play two hands, it is always polite to ask the other players if they mind. Again, this is a good idea in case the dealer turns up a blackjack, after you add the additional hand. If you play two hands, continue playing two until the end of the shoe. If you go back and forth between one and two, you will be blamed for changing the cards if they turn ugly. If you adhere to these common courtesies when you play blackjack, it will create a friendly atmosphere at your table, and that always makes the game more enjoyable. Until next time, I hope you play winning Blackjack. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world. Taking on Desert Stages Theatre’s Mainstage is the provocative and unfiltered Rent, premiering Friday, July 13 – Sunday, August 11th 2012. Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent follows a group of young impoverished artists and musicians through their struggles with addiction, sexuality and survival as the looming shadow of HIV/AIDS encroaches. While they face fears and tackle problems, they discover the importance and power of love. The rock musical is a journey of finding in love, discovering your voice and living for today. Set during the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, Rent puts an edgy spin on the timeless tale of the starving artist. The compelling production features songs such as “La Vie Bohème,” “Rent,” “I’ll Cover You,” and “Seasons of Love.” Elevating the profound musical is the performance of a live band alongside the talented cast. In an interwoven and diverse group, Sean Mullaney will portray Roger, a musician; Sam Wilkes will play Mark, a filmmaker, Damon Bolling will portray Collins, a philosopher;

Michael Thompson will play Benny, the landlord; Alex Ncube will portray Mimi, a dancer; Lynzee 4man will play Maureen, a performing artist; Chanel Bragg will portray Joanne, a lawyer; and Lucas Coatney will play drag queen and musician, Angel. Taking the audience on an emotional roller coaster, Rent debuts in Desert Stages Theatre’s Mainstage Cullity Hall, sure to captivate its audiences. Rent premiered in New York City, off-Broadway in January 1996, and was written by Jonathan Larson, who suddenly died the night before its first performance. The musical went on to play Broadway from April 1996 through 2008 and closed as the ninth longest-running Broadway show at the time. Rent is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème and won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and several Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. In 2005, Rent was adapted into a motion picture. Tickets Online and by Phone. Tickets are available at www.DesertStages. org; or by phone, 480.483.1664, and also at the theatre box office, 4720 N. Scottsdale Road, north side of Scottsdale Fashion Square, next to Coco’s restaurant. Tickets are $22 in advance or $25 day of performance.

Wine Pairing Pt. 1: Pasta By: Nathan Brugnone www.UptheCreekAZ.com In these Wine Paring columns, I’ll be outlining rules-of-thumb and suggestions for the wine-drinking masses. One key idea to keep in mind is matching and contrasting. Simply, this means pairing with or against the grain of the dish. Pasta: simple—noodles and sauce. The basis of Italian and Southeast Asian cuisine, among others, pasta is a wonderful starting point in the pairing realm of wine serving. Red sauce, white sauce, and sweet & sour sauce: let’s investigate the options.

White Sauce: white wine. Since white sauces are fatty, consider wines with high acidity to cut the fat. Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc will provide both acidity and fruity notes to add depth to the experience. Asian Noodle Dishes: white wine, again. Asian food, on the whole, pairs well with whites only. Rosès are not too far out, and even Pinot Noir has its place, but Asian food is so complex and fatty that white wines are a sure bet. Chardonnay-based blends and white sauce-friendly wines work wonderfully. Stay tuned for more pairing tips!

Italian Red Sauce: whether you’re pairing wine with meat sauce and marinara, there are many ways to go. A clever choice would be something Italian and red! Barbera wine makes a good vegetarian accompaniment, and the meatier Barbera wines match well with meat sauce. Chianti is another choice that both matches and contrasts, due to its “funk”; this comes from the wild yeast and bacteria that participate in its production.

BEER! SECTION 42

BEER! CRAFT BEER AND CHARITY Craft Beer and Charity. These two things go together like…well, craft beer and charity. The relationship between craft beer and charity goes back a long way, the most visible method has always been through participation in beer festivals that support charity. But different breweries get involved with different charities, and charities have sprung up around the craft beer connection. Any way you slice this, there is a lot to talk about which is perfect as now we can have a two part series. If I really stretch it out, maybe three parts and I won’t need to come up with a new idea until late July. This could work out great, for me anyway. Not so sure about you folks doing the reading, but nothing in my contract says I have to care about making your reading experience enjoyable. So, here’s what I’m thinking…first we talk a little bit about brewers and their pet charities, or other unique ways they support charitable operations, then we move on to charities that are beer related. After that we wrap up and go have a beer. Sound good? Let’s do it then.

One of the first breweries that comes to mind when I think of charities is Alaskan Brewing Company. Located in Juneau Alaska, Marcy and Geoff Larson, founders of the brewery, believe in giving back. Given their location, they have a natural interest in the ecology and supporting earth based charities. They were instrumental in June 28th, 2012 - July 4th, 2012

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” starting Coastal CODE (Clean Oceans Depend on Everybody) which supports the cleanup and preservation of the Pacific Ocean and its coastlines. If you didn’t know it, they surf in Alaska, mostly in Yakutat, just north of Juneau, so the local surfers joined forces with others to start this organization. Alaskan came to the table with financial support by donating one percent of all proceeds from its Alaskan IPA to the organization. But they also thought that awareness was important, so they took it a step further. The label on the Alaskan IPA features a surfing scene with Mount Saint Elias standing behind the surfers…18,000 feet of snow covered majesty. Alaskan isn’t just about the environment although it would be enough. They also generously donate to other charities and get particularly involved in charities that support through culinary events. Another great thing about Alaskan beers is that they are great food beers. You can cook with them or drink them with food…either way. There is also a tradition of great food in Alaska, so once again a natural combination.

Stone Brewing in San Diego is another giver. Belying their Arrogant Bastard persona by making each and every one of their anniversary events a major fundraiser, Stone has raised over one million dollars directly for charitable organizations. They have also held unique events that include dying hair, cutting hair (for Locks of Love…a great charity, look it up) and all kinds of other fun events to support serious causes. They even created a beer, Sawyer’s Triple, as a charitable event. The namesake

Sawyer was the eight year old son of one of their brewers. Over the years Sawyer became a popular visitor to the brewery and then it was discovered that he had a rare neuro-degenerative disease, ALD. Sawyer passed away just days before the first batch of this Triple was released, but the beer served as a reminder of his courage through an impossible situation. Additionally, Stone has started a raffle for their special releases. Instead of everyone lining up at the brewery prior to a special release, Stone runs an online

raffle that raises money for a cause, and eliminates problems during the day of the release as only ticket winners get the special beer. New Belgium Brewing is very involved in charities, especially ones that benefit the environment. They are an active member of 1% for the Planet donating one percent of all sales to environmental stewardship. Through their myriad events especially Tour de Fat they bring awareness to the need for global responsibility. They have a big focus on bicycles and encourage their Fort Collins based employees to bike to work. They have their own Fat Tire cruiser bikes which they frequently donate to worthy charities to raise money. They don’t just preach this subject and throw some money at it; they live it every day. They are a wind powered brewery; they recirculate the heat from the brewing process to thaw their shipping docks in the winter

When where you live inspires what you do, we call that living life Alaskan.

Even smaller breweries can get in on the fun. Iron Hill Brewery, a brewpub chain located in Delaware and Pennsylvania, has always supported charitable efforts. Their individual restaurants participate in many local fundraisers and service events. As a larger company they are active in supporting Cure Search National Childhood Cancer Foundation, an organization dedicated to reaching the day when every child with cancer can be guaranteed a cure. They also

work with Habitat for Humanity, Muscular Dystrophy Association and a local youth center. They have brewed a special beer in collaboration with former Philadelphia Eagle Jon Runyan with proceeds going to fight Cystic Fibrosis.

eliminating the need for snowplows and salt; they prioritize the employee parking lot based on fuel efficiency of the car, so an employee with a hybrid gets a space closer to the door than does someone who drives a gas guzzler (not that anyone does drive a gas guzzler).

By no means is this anywhere near a complete list. Just about every craft brewer is very involved in the community and commits time and resources to support their favorite charities. And it is not just breweries that get involved, but the beer culture seems to encourage folks to be kinder and more charitable. As we will see in our next part, there are plenty of groups that are tied in to the craft beer culture that are very involved in charitable works.

What’s in a COLLAGE Anyway?

Hello again craft beer lovers; today let’s get back to beer! Has anyone yet been fortunate enough to try Conflux #1 Collage? Let me just say that you must at all costs find a bottle of this brew. Collaboration between Deschutes & Hair of The Dog Brewing, this is a one-time only beer that simply must be part of your craft collection. Beginning with Dissident and Stoic from Deschutes and then Fred & Adam from Hair of the Dog, the beers are blended and then aged in Rye Whiskey, Cognac, Sherry, Pinot Noir, Bourbon, new American Oak, and new Oregon Oak barrels. Wow! On the nose and palate, Dissident from Deschutes jumps right out with a tangy, semi sour flavour that gradually fades into a barrel aged wonderland of colourful characters. The next brew to pronounce itself is Fred. A hoppy golden ale strong ale that lends hop character and mouth feel to the overall structure. All four beers do indeed add their unique essence to this mix in some fashion and I think both breweries really hit the nail on the head. The overall impression is one of reserved chaos that quietly explodes in your mouth. My Whole Foods partner in crime John Ziegler would most certainly describe this as “Straight Titties”.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Great food pairings should include festive holiday dishes like stout braised turkey legs with cranberry sauce and mash or for summer, bruschetta with goat’s cheese, fresh pesto, capers and lemon oil. The perfect booze pairing has got to be 12 year old The Glenlivet highland single malt scotch and one ice cube. As always, keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail. com and don’t forget to keep your mind on craft and craft on your mind. Cheers!

I used to live in an area that was just West of Fountain Hills. When being out there, you almost feel like there is nothing to do. However, there is an awesome place called The American Sports Grill. This place has live bands throughout the week - and if you are a sports fan like I am, then even better. I am a sucker for a good deal. The happy hour runs Monday-Friday 3pm-6pm and reverse starts at 9pm Sunday-Thursday. They have a $5 menu with awesome offerings. I love Tuesdays for $10 off any bottle of wine, except for house wine. One of my favorite drinks that they have on their summer menu is the berry sangria… less than $8… delicious! Also, right outside of the restaurant is one of the world’s largest man made fountains that goes off every quarter to the hour! It is a beautiful location and a neat little town to explore! 16872 East Avenue of the Fountain Hills, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268

By Justin Patrick In today’s world of hidden agendas, data mining and consumer profiling it’s easy to feel vulnerable and hopeless as you face any number of false advertisements, never knowing what you can trust. From word crafting in agreements and privacy policies that trick consumers, to consumer profiling so companies can customize your life’s advertisement experience to maximize the number of “things” you buy, there seems to be no end to what corporations are willing to do to take advantage of you. Almost like a feeder fish starring down a group of hungry giant corporate sharks, everyone seems out to trick you into something you would otherwise never agree to. Surely, there is a company out there working to do the right thing, isn’t there? Not everyone is corrupt, are they? If you would have asked that of me last week, I would have had a grim opinion to share with you about most technology companies and products on the market. However, as we sit here being conditioned to assume that that’s just how companies are now and that there is no truth in advertising - a glimmer of hope appears. On Tuesday of last week, the US Patent Office granted Apple a patent on “Techniques to Pollute Electronic Profiling.” This should be of great concern the multi-billion dollar industry that has been built around tricking consumers. It looks like apple might be gearing up to give consumers a way to fight back! In short, the patented technology would completely break information gathering techniques of the website while you are shopping or browsing the internet so that you cannot be profiled. It actually involves creating an entire cloned false identity for you, a fake name, a fake address, fake likes and dislikes, fake anything and everything to complete

For example, you might like looking at photographs of airplanes and cars, but you could set your cloned identity to like pictures of kittens and pie. This way, when a site gathers this information from you, you hand off false information to avoid being profiled – it’s ‘disinformation’. This will be done as an entire cloned persona so that the information will be complete and consistent. In other words, your fake self will continue to like kittens and pie every time somebody asks. These clones can even be set on auto pilot so that behind the scenes your fake self has a completely different routine than you to match your fake location and tastes. Apparently, this technology might be delivered in a manner that allows us to toggle our fake selves on or off as we browse the web. That way, when you want to be yourself and let someone access your true identity you can. While this does not help with free services taking information from consumer data (last week’s topic of discussion); it does help the browsing aspect of things and that’s at least a move in the right direction. I applaud Apple for stepping out from the pack and taking a stance with myself and others as we try to find ways to protect consumers and keep private data truly private. I don’t know about you, but I feel a little more confident that maybe there are still a few good guys out there. Maybe we aren’t as alone on the technology battlefield as we thought! I guess time will tell… Join me again next week as I continue to take you through a no-nonsense view of your technical world. Regards, Justin Patrick President / CEO

If you’ve never thought about which sports are considered extreme, here is a brief list: Skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, BMX, rollerblading, white water rafting, sport climbing (an offshoot, much more “extreme” version of rock climbing), Motocross, base jumping, sky diving, and according to some: Parkour. There is a variety of versions or interpretations of all of these different activities - and it would seem new ones are consistently popping up worldwide. different tricks attempted by amateur skateboarders, and there is certainly very little room for an “oops” when it comes to sky diving. It would appear, then, that an extreme sport must be inherently risky, or dangerous conditions. The Rush This leads us into our third point— that risk may be one factor in the incredible thrill experienced by those that engage in extreme sports. The adrenaline rush is a powerful force that draws many young adults to do reckless things, such as jumping off mountains or kayaking through

20-foot rapids. Many who engage in these types of sports seem to get addicted to the feeling—be it purely from the feeling of a fall, or from knowing that what they are doing is particularly dangerous. Putting yourself at odds with your mortality causes the anxiety, and mixed with the bare bones of the sport, can cause a serious spike. This adrenaline rush, or thrill factor, is another element that sets these sports apart from basketball or backgammon. So what makes a sport extreme? In short, simply having what it takes to meet the challenge.

Risky Business What else do all of these sports have in common? Well, it would seem that the young at heart run off with their assumed invincibility to engage in these sports that have a level of risk associated to them. Many of the sports listed, such as skateboarding and sky diving, hold incredible risk. Many injuries result from the

sports still on an incline, it makes you wonder if the “extreme” connotation is an indication of quality. However, it would appear it’s not Uncle Joe that’s running to the queue to strap up and cave dive. Indeed, the popularity of these extreme sports seems to run the gamut along the younger generations. Thus, an extreme sport seems to be one dominated by a younger crowd. While it may seem that this is purely because the young are thought to be more reckless, holding the illusion of invincibility, others may argue that engaging in extreme sports allows them to seek higher levels of personal development—facing fears and living up to challenges.

Kim’s Corner Over the last three years, The Men have dabbled in everything from hardcore punk to psych to shoegaze to black metal; and they have done all of it effortlessly, and for the most part, flawlessly. Heart Alive to Perform at Casino Arizona June 29th & 30th The 1970’s was an abundance of good times and great music. The classic rock era produced beloved artists, timeless hits. With this came the birth of tribute bands. Original artists don’t always tour—or tour in your area and when they do, there’s a heavy price tag on tickets these days. Fans want to see a live band perform the music they love-- and they want to experience a show that doesn’t disappoint. A tribute show audience is more critical than you can imagine, and therefore a band that has gone into this area of musicianship best be able to deliver a show that leaves their audience with a “wow”. One such show performing in Scottsdale AZ this month at Casino Arizona is “Heart Alive”. Heart Alive is the nation’s most authentic tribute to the legendary rock band Heart, performing hits from their Dreamboat Annie album to Desire Walks On. Heart Alive was recently awarded “Best Tribute 2011” by Vegas Rocks Magazine --sharing the award stage with artists such as Sebastian Bach, Vince Neil and Steve Stevens. This year the band members have again been nominated and will be walking the red carpet with Sammy Hagar, David Coverdale, and many other national musicians. “Heart Alive is the next best thing to having Ann and Nancy Wilson there…Heart Alive captures the essence of what Heart actually brings to the stage themselves” as quoted by Mike O’Brien, Morning Show Host of KKLZ radio Las Vegas. “Heart Alive blew me away from the moment they attacked the stage and romanced the audience…I felt I was listening to the real Heart with dead on vocals and guitars…the entire show is an amazing authentic musical experience…absolute top shelf” quoted by Charly Kayle KOIT Morning Show Host San Francisco, who introduced the band for their two night shows at the Cannery North Las Vegas--both of which were sold out. Capturing Ann Wilson’s power, range and pitch perfect vocals is Valerie James, Heart Alive’s “Ann Wilson”… with Julie Torchin on guitar and vocals as “Nancy Wilson”. Both women are huge fans of Heart and have poured their passion in their performance. “If you’re going to do it, you have to do it right. There are thousands of critics judging every note” said Valerie James. Seasoned musicians Dave Davis-lead guitar/ vocals, Aaron Olson-drums/percussion, Danny Buss-bass guitar, Brad Torchin-lead guitar, and Todd Rogers on keyboards – have come together to touch hearts of all ages— bringing back memories and sounds that defined a generation. No other Heart tribute captures the note-for-note signature sound, performance, and feel of a Heart show than the members of Heart Alive. This is a show you don’t want to miss! Heart Alive’s members also perform a 2nd tribute to Fleetwood Mac. More info can be found at Heartaliverocks.com and FleetwoodNicks.com

Tommy Emmanuel Delivers

Amazing Performance in Mesa

©2011 Feld Entertainment

Guitar-legend Tommy Emmanuel delivered an awe-inspiring performance on Tuesday, June 19th at the Mesa Arts Center. With a Grammy-nominated career that spans 5 decades, his popularity continues to soar. At age 54, he plays over 300 concerts per year and has done so for the last 5 years! Even more amazing is that he sells out those shows, something the most iconic bands could not hope to do. If you don’t know who he is, just go to YouTube and type in his name and become enlightened. Find out why both Les Paul and Eric Clapton have called him the best guitarist in the world. Even people that normally turn away from guitar-idol performers will turn on when they see him perform. Perhaps more impressive than his skills and beautiful melodies is the relative ease in which he plays them. He literally seems to be having the time of his life every moment he is up there and if you ask him (we did), he will tell you that he is living a dream come true. Tommy uses all 10 fingers to play, rather than the much less ambitious finger-

’56 TO PERFORM AT BROADWAY PALM 1950’s Rock & Roll Ready to Rock the House!

‘56 …four amazing musicians, individually accomplished in other genres, come together to ask this question: What if all those legends from Sun Records and the Louisiana Hayride never went to Hollywood, never made TV shows and movies but, were still just playin’? What if Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins and even Elvis were going to be playin’ this Saturday night downtown at the civic auditorium in your town? ’56 brings back to life one of the purest forms of American Roots music and lays it down with style. From blues-tinged, hip-shakin’ rockers like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Shake, Rattle & Roll” to the sultry, starlight ballads of “Fever” or “Love Me”, Bret’s silky-smooth, powerful vocals make every female swoon and the fellas want to run out and race with their buddies for pinks! The ethereal twang of Tom’s Gretsch Falcon on tunes like “Sleepwalk” and “Honey Don’t” are reminiscent of Carl

ings displayed by most of the rest of the guitar-playing world. He plays the acoustic guitar with speed extraordinaire - Amazing because the acoustic guitar is built for sound, not speed like its electric brother. In addition Emmanuel turns the instrument itself into a percussive rhythm section as he hits, strokes, beats, taps and knuckle-busts it in-between fretboard gymnastics and skillful riffs. There really is nobody like him. If you would like to learn more, visit www.TommyEmmanuel.com and the next time the maestro comes to town, invest in a ticket. Perkins/ Brian Setzer/ Duane Eddy while Austins’ wing-tipped acrobatics on the stand-up bass have to be seen to be believed! And with Jeff laying down the beat on the drums – wait ‘til you see both of them simultaneously duel it out on “Mystery Train” – unbelievable! So, put your glad-rags on and grab your best gal or guy – ’56 is here and they’re gonna blow the roof off the joint! Performance Date: June 29, 2012. Dinner at 6:00pm; Concert begins at 7:30pm. Tickets to ‘56 can be purchased online at BroadwayPalmWest.com, by phone, (480) 325-6700, or at the Box Office, located at 5247 E. Brown Road in Mesa. Ticket price is $39 for dinner and show; $20 for show only seating. Concert Subscriptions $29: Purchase tickets for dinner and show to three or more shows in the Hot Summer Nights Concert Series and save $10 per ticket. Group Pricing for 8 or more to any one concert for dinner and show: $29 per ticket.
