This year, there will be not one, but two separate Money In The Bank Matches with titles for both RAW and Smackdown. One will be for a chance to become WWE Champion and the other to become World Heavyweight Champion. On this special night, seven SmackDown Superstars, including John Cena, Big Show, Kane and Jericho will do battle for a shot at the invaluable contract nestled high above the ring, bringing to the valley one of the most unpredictable match types in wrestling history. One thing is for certain, the senses-shattering excitement each competitor brings to
the ring will make way for a night of World Wrestling Entertainment not to be missed. performance by Quvenzhané Wallisas the 6-year-old girl, with awards mentions a certainty,is the catalyst that captures our hearts as her story unfolds.” Grade: B+ Joseph: “Director Behn Zeitlin’s vision in ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ is simply spectacular. His voice, however, is another story. The new drama is great about drawing the viewer into its setting – an extremely eccentric area of New Orleans dubbed the Bathtub. Unfortunately, the accompanying story – based on Zeitlin’s co-writer Lucy Alibar’s stage play ‘Juicy and Delicious’ - is too amorphous, lacking the atmosphere’s distinction. In other words, the movie is all context and not enough content.” Grade: D

‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’

Stan: “Following the traditions of the previous Ice Age movies, this next adventure doesn’t disappoint as the aspects of friendships, parenting, loyalty, and survival are again reinforced while providing those ‘magic moments’ for younger viewers, my two year old guest was literally captivated by the 3D presentation. And yes, for the older viewers, the familiar innuendo and clever dialogue referencing ideologies of our modern time abound with the all-star voice cast. Do stay for the closing credits as the voices behind the characters are presented along side their counterparts while my favorite ‘Scrat’ is up to his usual pursuit of acorns.” Grade: C+

‘Last Call at the Oasis’* Aiming to shatter the myths behind our most precious resource, this documentary tells us that the global water crisis is the central issue facing our world this century and that we can manage the problem but only if we are willing to act now. (PG-13 – 105 minutes)
Joseph: “Sometimes in trying to be as family-friendly as physically possible, a film also becomes as forgettable as physically possible. Such is the case with ‘The Magic of Belle Isle,’ the latest motion picture from writer/ director Rob Reiner. It is not that the dramedy is bad by any means, but it certainly is somewhat bland. Having said that, the film still features Reiner’s trademark charm so that – in addition to a poignant performance from star Morgan Freeman – makes the movie a worthwhile watch nonetheless.” Grade: C

While we identify with the complex emotions experienced by its characters, their plight never quite piques our interest enough to the point at which we want to follow it along the motion picture’s meandering path. Having said that, the flick features some fine performances, none better than the one delivered by Michelle Williams.” Grade: D

We told them that we have a film in mind but we are not going to be able to explain it to you, you gotta just come down to New Orleans, come hang out with us in a bar and we’ll just talk about the movie all night. There’s no real way to sum it up in like a sentence.

The only foods I trust are the popcorn, drinks, and boxed candy. I wouldn’t eat the pretzels, hot dogs, or nachos. Brian: ‘There are certain parts of that statement I agree with. I hate to say this but when you’re working with teenagers sometimes they don’t always use the gloves for handling the foods. I know Harkins with the pretzels they put on the gloves and they’re doing it in the proper fashion. It’s what you see in the backroom, or

“I don’t really eat the pretzels but if you have a disgruntled employee or an employee and it’s their last day, or one who doesn’t care, the hot dogs are the ones that get, for lack of a better word, ‘played with’. We have caught employees on camera doing things and that employee is removed. I think they’re being a little bit too harsh with the statement of #5 by including pretzels and nachos. As a personal rule for myself, I won’t eat a hot dog at a movie theater.” David: I really like the pretzels and pizzas at Harkins; they are good and priced appropriately. I have eaten
their hot dogs with no ill effects, in fact, they were always very tasty. Theaters fall under the same rules and are inspected by the same people as restaurants. There is every reason to believe the food is safe and prepared correctly. A few columns back we talked about different grapes and ways to recognize types of wines you like via the grape. Of course grapes don’t turn into fine wine all on their own – although back in my great-grandfather’s days of homemade wine in the basement, he did tend to let nature run its course on concord grapes and no real human intervention. The result was such a coarse wine, he would have to cut it with water! Alas those days are over and today’s winemakers bring a lot of talent, finesse, and science to the wine-making process. That makes it even harder for you to know what style the wine will be. Many times when I’m out with friends, they turn the wine list over to me and say, “You pick---but pick something good!” Thanks, my friends, but can you please tell me the wine style you might enjoy? Often they are hard-pressed to put into words their preferred wine style. I’d like to offer a little primer on wine style to store away in your mental wine computer. Red wines are easily described in four ways: 1) Light and Fruity—these are usually pinot noirs made in an old world style, such as French. 2) Smooth— wines that fit this description are typically medium in structure – you will find some cabernets and some heartier pinots in this group. 3) Earthy/Spicy—my favorite style – these wines are typically Rhones (Grenache), Spanish wines, Zinfandels, and some Tuscan wines too. Finally 4) Big and Bold—this one can you probably guess: lots of California Cabernets, Barossa Valley Australian reds, and even some hearty Italian reds. Wines in this category are concentrated, rich, and usually higher in alcohol. White Wines generally go into three styles: 1) Light and Crisp – these are your Rieslings, Sauvignon Blancs, and many Pinot Grigrios. You will be able to smell the fruit and the color will be pale. 2) Fruity and Smooth – not too different from the first style except more intense fruit – more floral with a longer finish, and 3) Rich and Creamy – think of this as the white wine equivalent of the Big and Bold Red—these are mainly oaked Chardonnays. So the next time you’re out to dinner with me and you ask me to choose the wine, you can say with authority, “Marlene, I would like a nice red – something earthy and spicy – (also because I know that is your favorite style too)!” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

I don’t really know either, but I know if I flip the switch the light turns on - works for me. So we also know steak and red wine go well together. But why? Here’s the simplified version. Imagine looking through a microscope at a view of your tongue. Your tongue has ridges and mountains and valleys with taste receptors all over the place. As you eat your steak, the fat starts to fill in the crevices on your tongue, therefore closing off the taste bud receptors in those crevices from being able to
continue to taste the awesome steak you are eating. When you take a sip of your wine, the acid in the wine “cleanses your palate” and washes away the fat filling in the crevices on your tongue. So when you go to take another bite of your steak, you have a fresh tongue with all taste bud receptors ready to taste that bite of steak again. Repeat again and again. So now you know. Will your next steak taste better now?
When it’s hot outside, I crave cool, fresh foods… crisp salads, chilled soups and sushi, lots of sushi. Our favorite sushi place in the valley is Hana Japanese Eatery on 7th Avenue. Family owned and operated, it’s always the best value and the best quality. Try to get there early, they are normally very busy! No white tablecloths and overpriced dishes, instead expect good food, friendly service and great prices. We also love that we can bring our wine to Hana Japanese and there’s no corkage charge. CONTRACT BREWING Contract Brewing, simply stated, is using a third party brewer to produce beers that you sell under your own name. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s move on to a discussion of contract brewing. It has pros and cons to be sure. Many people have a vision of a massive assembly line, filling beer-flavored water into bottles or cans to be shipped all over the country to unsophisticated drinkers. “Only big brands need to contract brew,” or “contractually brewed beers are INFERIOR to beers brewed inhouse,” are common anecdotes heard throughout the craft community. However, this is simply not the case, at least not always. In certain circles, contractually brewed beers have historically been viewed as substandard to their “hand-crafted” counterparts. Breweries who have undertaken such endeavors have, on occasion, been
As we enter into another year of exceptional growth in the craft beer segment, we have seen massive brew house and capacity expansions by many craft breweries. All over the country, breweries are rapidly expanding their capacity to meet the flood of demand from newly converted macro-drinkers. However, for many breweries, this rapid growth causes its fair share of problems. More and more, breweries are struggling to keep up with demand, causing them to both lose revenue and create product shortages in the marketplace. These scenarios neither benefit the brewery, nor the consumer. In these instances, a brewery has two decisions to make; raise capital or increase debt to finance a capacity expansion, or outsource production to another brewery with excess capacity.
becomes problematic. Breweries also frequently do not have the capital structure to qualify for financing, assuming somebody is lending money. Brewery equipment is incredibly expensive, building out existing buildings is incredibly expensive….do you see a theme here? So brewers have to make a choice. If a brewery cannot afford to expand (space/capital limitations), their only option to meet their demand is to outsource production to another brewery. This is where drinkers start to become uncomfortable. A lot of people choose to drink one brand over another for several reasons. First, people like to support their local brewery. If they find out that their “local” beer isn’t really produced locally, drinkers feel betrayed and lied to by the company. Second, some drinkers like being the “first” ones to
discover the next great microbrew. They love bragging to their friends about this great beer that they “discovered.” When the find that the beer was actually made at some large contract brewer, they feel disappointed and betrayed. Why does contract brewing have this negative perception? First, as mentioned above, there is a certain romance to having a brick and mortar brewery. One where the consumer can go and talk to people who share a passion for great beer, and where the consumer can watch the beer being made. This is preferably a small building with a tasting room, t-shirts and folks that are dedicated to one particular brand. Clearly contract breweries do not provide this. Secondly, it is seen by most people as non-authentic. Paying someone else to brew the recipes you created

From the ingredients to final quality control, the perception is that the company contracting the brewing process has little or no control over the product. To be fair, that is not entirely accurate. A good marketing brewery (to distinguish from those that brew their own beer) will know and understand the brewing process, they will maintain close contact with the brewer and will pay close attention to changes at the brewery that may
impact their product. These are the ones that are doing it right. There is another concern, especially in this growing craft beer world, which comes into play. Actually, two concerns that sort of go together. Anybody with a recipe and a few bucks can hire a brewery to produce that recipe and then market it. There is no effort put forth in developing the brewery, there is no sacrifice made in building the brewery, there is no building of a loyal fan base who can remember when the brewery first opened and they stopped in to see what incredible new beer they could try. The beer just magically appears. Craft beer is about stories, real stories of people like Larry Bell, who opened a home brew store and turned it into one of the biggest craft breweries in the country. Stories about people like Eric Wallace who, after co-founding Left Hand Brewing, have become a tireless worker in support of craft brewing, both in his home state of Colorado, and across the country. These stories and these people are part of what make the craft beer industry great…not the guys who are purely marketing. The other side
of that coin is the breweries that are making the contract beers. With the incredible growth of the industry, what brewery is unable to sell enough of their own beer so that they have room to contract brew. With few exceptions (breweries with recent expansions, breweries that were able to start up large enough to have room to grow their own business, etc)

these are breweries that specialize in contract production, or have, for some reason, been unable to rise to the current level of the craft beer revolution for whatever reason. This is not to say that every brewery that contracts product is unworthy. Papago Brewing has some pretty good beers, but they maintain close

just doesn’t seem right. People are looking for a brewer with passion, a brewer with their hands on the proverbial pulse of the brewhouse, a brewer that still puts the boots on every day and slogs spent grain …in short a brewer who is hands on. They don’t get that with contract brewing. Too often the “brewer” is actually a marketing person who becomes the face of the brewery while the person running the actual brewing process is an unknown who may be producing a different brand every day.

control over the recipes and quality. Boston Beer Company has done pretty well with Sam Adams, much of which is still brewed by contract breweries, started out almost exclusively contract brewed. 21stAmendment operates a brewpub in San Francisco, but much of their beer is produced at a different facility. This is the case with many successful contract beers. 21st Amendment perhaps defines what it takes to be successful contracting out your brewing. They have the back story, they have the brew pub, they have a person responsible for the quality of the beer, and who understands the brewing process enough to make sure that their contract beer is produced flawlessly. Most other popular contract brews fit that same pattern. The ones that
don’t make it are the ones that have a recipe and nothing more. They don’t know how to, or don’t choose to, monitor the brewing process. All that said, it doesn’t mean don’t try contract brews. Our belief is to try everything, and figure out what you like. However, when it comes to contract brews, don’t expect much. Many of them are produced as products to be marketed like anything else. For those of us that enjoy craft beer and its culture, we want the authentic, grass roots beers…beers that we have watched develop over the years….beers that we know are made with love and care, the same way we would make them given the opportunity.

Blending Beers With The BREW BROS Good Times!
Hello again beer lovers, this week please allow me to regale you with a story of Beer Blending and great teamwork. As many of you know, I host weekly Beer Class at Whole Foods Chandler that reviews all things new and exciting in the craft beer world. This last week was our first collaborative beer class with a local beer bloggers group called The Brew Bros. The evening began with a little pre tasting to make sure every blend was in good working order, then it was off to the races! First was the Drunken Brownie presented by Brew Bro. Bryan (Byron) Myron.What a treat, it tasted exactly as it was named, albeit with a nice amount of alcohol heat, being a blend of Sonoran White Chocolate Ale and Inebriator Imperial Stout. A quick congratulations goes to Bryan as he has recently become a BJCP Certified Beer Judge. Next up was the Dale The Ripper, a mix of Deviant Dales & Inebriator. This of course is a rendition of the often forgotten BREWERS CRACK Blend. From there things got really interesting as each of the Brew Bros. came around with more and more creative mixtures. The Decadent Peach, Chewbacca andThe Crisponator were just a few of the tantalizing combinations put forth for your enjoyment. My pick of the night was the Great Ape, a blend of Old Rasputin Imperial Stout and Wasatch Apricot Hefewiezen. WOW!

“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t” Catch 22 is one of those great neighborhood type bars that you may pass up while you’re driving on the road, but don’t be so quick to judge, this place is awesome. It is awesome for sports; they get all the UFC fights and show all the games; great place for football. They also have poker nights, which I think is pretty fun; I have done it before. It is not really that appealing on the outside but once you are in it is actually pretty nice. They can be a little pricey but what is awesome is they have SO many options it is ridiculous! I love that I can go in there for some wings, a burger, Italian food, or a nice NY strip steak! I indulged on the burgers there and they are delicious! The half-pound patty melt is grilled with onions, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing, and pickled on grilled rye bread. In the next few issues of RUSH, we’ll take a closer look at ten of the most dangerous stunts ever successfully performed in the history of man-kind by the bravest and most daring of men. Or perhaps, individuals missing a chromosome or two, with too much time on their hands. We’ll leave that up to you. One must ask themselves however, if the tables were turned, would you have the “marbles” to set out to conquer any one of these death-defying, hair-standing, jawdropping feats?
Did you know Ormer Locklear became a famous stuntman by mistake? A trained pilot, in 1918 he started what is now known as Wing Walking, when he walked the wing of his plane (whilst in mid-air) to fix an engine problem! Locklear went on to become a famous Wing Walking stuntman in Hollywood after this, until his death in 1920. While performing his infamous stunt, the plane caught fire and Locklear, along with his aid Milton Elliott, were killed when the plane crashed to the ground. “I don’t do these things because I want to run the risk of being killed. I do it to demonstrate what can be done. Somebody has got to show the way. I want to do things that people feel can’t be done. I don’t believe anything is impossible but perpetual motion.
