The Games begin on NBC

Probably the most indelible image from the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was the 897 blocks of movable type on the floor of the Olympic stadium, moving and changing to depict, among other scenes, a raindrop rippling outward on a pond, swells on an ocean and the Chinese symbol for harmony. At sequence’s end, it was revealed that the performance was not computer-controlled, as had been assumed, but actually the work of 897 human performers moving their blocks up and down perfectly in unison. It was a stunning display of precision and attention to detail that still impresses NBC’s Bob Costas four years later as he readies to host the XXX Summer Olympics in London, which kicks off with the Opening Ceremony Friday, July 27, on NBC. “I think in Beijing they retired the trophy (for best Opening Ceremony),” Costas says. “You know, they had the resources to do it. You have a country that not only financed the Olympics and did so with an unlimited budget, but which is in a position to have tens of thousands of ‘volunteers’ volunteer to rehearse for six months. You just got circumstances in China that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. “Plus of course, they have an extraordinarily rich civilization and history to talk about,” he continues. “And it was a true national effort by an emerging nation with, at least for that purpose, close to unlimited resources of both people and money. So I think everybody decided after that, ‘All we can do is the best we can do on our own terms.’ But no one’s terms will ever be the same as Beijing’s. “And I think that – and I said this during the opening ceremonies – the average person watching at home had a combination of appreciation and awe for the beauty of it and the accomplishment of it. But also it was a little unsettling to them, because you said, ‘My God, if they can marshal their forces with this much precision for this ...,’ well, you fill in the blank.” The peacock network and its various properties – MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, NBC Sports Network, Telemundo, NBCOlympics.com and two specialty channels – will provide more than 5,500 hours of coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics running through the Closing Ceremony on Aug. 12, offering live and delay coverage of all 26 sports and all 302 medal competitions. Of course, one of the big stars of the next 17 days – along with Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal, Alicia Sacramone and the rest of the estimated 10,500 athletes representing 204 countries – will be the city of London itself. British royalty will make its presence known in several ways.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’: Batsuit-ing up is a production in and of itself By Joseph J. Airdo Actor Christian Bale, who portrays Bruce Wayne and – more significantly – his alter-ego Batman in Christopher Nolan’s cinematic trilogy of the superhero franchise, acknowledges that the Batsuit he dons is every bit as uncomfortable as it looks. “The claustrophobia was just unbelievable,” Bale said during a recent press conference for “The Dark Knight Rises,” which opens Friday, July 20 at movie theaters throughout the Valley. “I stood there and thought, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t think. This is too tight. This is squeezing my head. I’m about to have a nervous breakdown.’” Even Nolan admits that getting Bale in and out of the Batsuit – which has a reported 110 different parts to it – was a production in and of itself. And although I am relieved to say that I have never attempted to squeeze into anything as extensive as that, I can concur with Nolan’s comment as, each week, I wear a costume relating to one of the new releases I review during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien.”

I have experienced the sensation of suffocation while wearing a backwards red poncho made out to look like Spider-Man’s suit in the 113-degree heat. I have felt the stares from strangers while wearing a tacky Khaki Scouts outfit for “Moonrise Kingdom.” And I do not even want to tell you what happened to me while I was driving down the freeway dressed as a wolf-attack victim from “The Grey.” However, the one thing that all of the costumes have in common is the intense preparation involved in them – which, suffice it to say, sometimes takes a little creativity. (Hey, you try coming up with a costume for “People Like Us.”) Having said that, with experience comes wisdom so it is only natural that Nolan was able to streamline the Batsuit-ing up process over three motion pictures. In fact, Nolan credits several shortcuts he learned along the way to get Bale in and out of the Batsuit for his ability to wrap up shooting on “The Dark Knight Rises” 8 days ahead of schedule. Moreover, Bale acknowledges that the costume’s comfort has improved since 2005’s “Batman Begins” and 2008’s “The Dark Knight” as this time around he “could rip it off” himself if he “did in fact see stars.”

●● First layer of protection is an undersuit with built-in temperature regulators designed to keep wearer at comfortable temperature in almost any condition. ●● Second layer of protection consists of hardened kevlar plates on titaniumdipped tri-weave fibers, broken into multiple pieces of armor for mobility. ●● Suit is equipped with sonar-vision, where signals emitted by mobile phones are converted into images in a similar way to echolocation, in which bats use sound to see. ●● Forearms feature metal gauntlets with blades that are both retractable and capable of firing outwards as projectiles. ●● Cowl is made of graphite material and bullet-proof kevlar lining. Strong electric current runs through it to prevents anyone except wearer from removing it for identity-protection purposes. ●● Memory cloth cape is flexible in normal state but becomes semi-rigid in fixed form when electric current is passed through it from the microcircuits in the palms of gloves.

And that is a rather surprising criticism considering the new drama was written and directed by Hirokazu Koreeda – a filmmaker who is responsible for the acclaimed ‘Nobody Knows’ and ‘Still Walking,’ both of which had much more distinctive identities than this effort. Chances are if you complain to the manager and he sides with you, he’s just putting on a show to calm you down. The manager might pretend to yell at me for a minute, but he’ll pat me on the back the moment you’re out of sight. Brian: ‘Our policy is ‘We want that customer to leave happy!’ No matter what happens you make sure they leave happy. If that means giving them movie passes to calm them down, or if their kids got in a fight and spilled their popcorn all over the place, you give them new popcorn or drinks, or what ever the case may

A good manager would have told you that the employee was following policy and explained why it is policy. A bad manager yells at the employee in front of a customer or anywhere. If the employee was rude the manager should and a good manager will talk to him about his attitude in private.” Stan: “As any of us who are, or have been, in any type of managerial position, knows that this form of managerial leadership never works and is a thinly veiled pretense of placation that’s immediately apparent. Admittedly, I’ve never observed this type of action over the last six years that I have attended screenings which can be as many as eight in a week’s time during awards voting periods so I’d have to say, an absolute ‘thumbs down’ to this statement!” 7. Combination deals don’t save you money at some theaters. You’d pay the same price if you purchased the items separately. Brian: “I can only speak for what I do and my combination comes out to be a savings of about $2.00 as opposed to buying the items separately. I’ve checked prices at various theater

chains and you do save on the average around a buck and a half, so I find this statement a very negative ‘gauging’ statement. If you’re standing in line, and quickly add it up in your head and you figure it out that you aren’t saving anything, doesn’t that kind of make the theater look stupid? If a combo deal pushes it over the edge, I’ll eat that $2.00 and take the volume sale! David: “Just about the dumbest thing I have read in a long time. You can price it out for yourself by looking at the menu. Just like the ‘combo meals’ at fast food restaurants there is always a savings, sometimes it might be negligible but on occasion it is significant. With the prices at the Snack Bar being what they are any savings is appreciated.” Stan: “This is kind of a ‘no brainer’, one can calculate the prices while standing in line as we look over the items since the prices are posted. Even though we may not know the exact ounces, say in a medium and large drink, we can arrive at a reasonable conclusion of the validity of a combo deal against buying separate items.”

Northern hemisphere wine grape harvest starts in mid-August and goes until late October depending on the elevation and varietal. Due to the high demand for Arizona fruit by commercial winemakers, getting local fruit is very difficult. But since many Arizona winemakers got their start this way, with the right determination and contacts you can secure enough grapes to make a five gallon batch of local wine. Or, you can get some fruit from California, where 95% of the US wine grape production is. A few columns back we talked about different grapes and ways to recognize types of wines you like via the grape. Of course grapes don’t turn into fine wine all on their own – although back in my great-grandfather’s days of homemade wine in the basement, he did tend to let nature run its course on concord grapes and no real human intervention. The result was such a coarse wine, he would have to cut it with water! Alas those days are over and today’s winemakers bring a lot of talent, finesse, and science to the wine-making process. That makes it even harder for you to know what style the wine will be. Many times when I’m out with friends, they turn the wine list over to me and say, “You pick---but pick something good!” Thanks, my friends, but can you please tell me the wine style you might enjoy? Often they are hard-pressed to put into words their preferred wine style. I’d like to offer a little primer on wine style to store away in your mental wine computer. Red wines are easily described in four ways: 1) Light and Fruity—these are usually pinot noirs made in an old world style, such as French. 2) Smooth— wines that fit this description are typically medium in structure – you will find some cabernets and some heartier pinots in this group. 3) Earthy/Spicy—my favorite style – these wines are typically Rhones (Grenache), Spanish wines, Zinfandels, and some Tuscan wines too. Finally 4) Big and Bold—this one can you probably guess: lots of California Cabernets, Barossa Valley Australian reds, and even some hearty Italian reds. Wines in this category are concentrated, rich, and usually higher in alcohol. White Wines generally go into three styles: 1) Light and Crisp – these are your Rieslings, Sauvignon Blancs, and many Pinot Grigrios. You will be able to smell the fruit and the color will be pale. 2) Fruity and Smooth – not too different from the first style except more intense fruit – more floral with a longer finish, and 3) Rich and Creamy – think of this as the white wine equivalent of the Big and Bold Red—these are mainly oaked Chardonnays. So the next time you’re out to dinner with me and you ask me to choose the wine, you can say with authority, “Marlene, I would like a nice red – something earthy and spicy – (also because I know that is your favorite style too)!” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Don’t Be Scared of the Sommelier By Valerie Paxton Choosing a bottle of wine in a fancy restaurant can be intimidating, for sure. And if you ask you server for a wine list, you’re pretty much asking for a visit from the resident wine expert or sommelier. But don’t fret. You might think her job is to talk you into the most expensive wine, but it’s not. Don’t get me wrong, without guidance she’ll likely recommend the higher priced vintages -- but her goal is to help you pick a wine that works with your meal, and best of all, with your budget. So how do you get the discussion started in the right direction without announcing

Twist Tops Twist tops are awesome, especially if you’re a wine dude/server like me. Just untwist it tableside and you’re done. Sweet. There’s a rumor in the wine-drinking world that twist tops are indicative of a low quality wine, and this is false. I mean, I recall my high school days of Mad Dog 20/20 and Boones Farm binges, and I think this may be the root of why screw-top wine is looked down upon. But technology has advanced much since the late 90s; there’s more to twist tops than the convenience factor. The high quality twist tops are designed to encourage microoxidation. Simply, this allows

Here’s the trick: Pick a wine in your price range, point to it on the wine list and ask if it would be good with what you plan to order. What you’re really doing, depending on where you point, is letting her know what you like and how much you’re willing to spend. She will either agree with your choice (you’re a rockstar) or steer you to a more appropriate varietal within your budget. Next thing you know you have the perfect wine and you look like a genius to your friends, without ever mentioning price. So, what if there isn’t a wine on the list that meets your budget? Pass on the visit from the sommelier, order by the glass, or say “cocktails for everyone!”

For over 50 years, fire suppression technology has remained virtually unchanged, but the Instant Fire Suppression (IFS) research program is looking to change that. After years of research into anything and everything there is to know about fire, DARPA came to a simple conclusion. Just about every existing fire suppression technology involves interrupting the chemical reaction feeding the flame, such as your standard carbon-dioxide extinguisher. DARPA’s realization was that flames are cold plasmas, which means that they could be physically manipulated with forces such as electromagnetic radiation and acoustic waves. This acoustic fire suppression system employs 2 main forces to combat fire: Air Velocity - The acoustic waves increase the velocity of the air, thinning the boundary layer where combustion occurs. Sound Waves - The waves disrupt the surface of the fuel, which increases

the width of the flame, disrupting combustion as the same amount of heat is spread over a wider area. The new acoustic fire suppressant is intended to be used solely in an enclosed environment such as such as airplane and vehicle cockpits, and below deck on ships. Actually, the IFS program itself was started due to a fire aboard the USS George Washington in 2008 that caused $70 million of damage. It should not be long before we see use of his technology in the private sector and perhaps maybe soon our home theater can double as a fire extinguisher. I, for one, can’t wait for the day that I can expense a new ridiculously over powered speaker system as a home protection device on my taxes! TRAPPIST BEERS, ST. ARNOLDUS DAY & BELGIAN INDEPENDENCE WEEK Since we are celebrating St. Arnoldus Day and Belgian Independence Week this week, it seemed like a good time to revisit Trappist beers. In the 11th century, St. Arnoldus implored his congregation to “Drink Beer, Not Water”. Plague was upon the land and his advice saved thousands from a gruesome death as the beer was safe while the water was not. Trappist beer can be magical. There is a legend surrounding it that makes it seem bigger than life. The beers are in demand, and, with one exception, available at most high end beer stores. They are for the most part based on styles that define Abbey beers, Dubbel and Tripel. Indeed the big difference between Trappist and Abbey beers is merely where they are brewed and under whose supervision. Abbey beers which name a particular Abbey typically are brewed by lay people with some sort of licensing agreement with the Abbey. In many cases they were originally brewed in the Abbey by the monks but eventually the job was turned over to others. In order to be considered a Trappist beer, and thereby worthy of the designation, Authentic Trappist Product, the beer must meet three criteria. The beer must be produced within the walls of the Abbey by or under control of Trappist monks; the brewery, the choices of brewing, and the commercial orientations must obviously depend on the monastic community; and finally,the economic purpose of the brewery must be directed toward assistance and not toward financial profit.

The Trappist order originated in the Cistercian monastery of La Trappe, France. Various Cistercian congregations existed for many years, and by 1664 the Abbot of La Trappe felt that the Cistercians were becoming too liberal. He introduced strict new rules in the abbey and the Strict Observance was born. Since this time, many

Monastery brewhouses, from different religious orders, existed all over Europe, since the Middle Ages. From the very beginning, beer was brewed in French Cistercian monasteries following the Strict Observance. For example, the monastery of La Trappe in Soligny, already had its own brewery in 1685. Breweries were only later introduced in monasteries of other countries, following the extension of the Trappist order from France to the rest of Europe. The Trappists, like many other religious people, originally brewed beer as to feed the community, in a perspective of self-sufficiency. Nowadays, Trappist breweries also brew beer to fund their works and for good causes. Many of the Trappist monasteries and breweries were destroyed during the French Revolution and the World Wars. Among the monastic breweries, the Trappists were certainly the most active brewers: in the last 300 years, there were at least nine Trappist breweries in France, six in Belgium, two in the Netherlands, one in Germany, one in Austria, one in Bosnia and possibly other countries.

roasted malts used to produce the color as well as a usual addition of candy sugar which provides some additional fermentables but typically remains behind to provide the sweetness. Dubbels usually are in the 6-8 percent ABV range.Tripels (Triple) are the other popular Trappist beer. At 8-11 percent ABV they can be quite adventurous to drink, even more so because the alcohol is not particularly noticeable during consumption. Golden in color and with a nice spiciness that comes from the yeast acting on the barley (and sometimes wheat and oats), these beers are a pleasure to drink. One other style, Quadrupel, is sometimes thought of as a Trappist style, but in reality, only La Trappe produces this style under this name and it is considered more of an Abbey style than a Trappist. Several of the breweries do produce a higher ABV product that can meets the general description of a Quad but no others name it as such. Chimay The Chimay brewery is a Belgian brewery founded inside Scourmont Abbey in the

Today there are just seven, six in Belgium and one in The Netherlands. These breweries, however, continue to be a mecca of sorts for the beer faithful and any beer lover is sure to seek out an opportunity to see at least one of them if they ever have the opportunity. They do this even though a visit often means just viewing the outside of the monastery and having one of their beers in a nearby bar. Earlier I had noted only two styles of Trappist produced beers. In reality there are more. Most Trappist breweries offer a Patersbier, or Fathers’ Beer that is only available within the monastery. These beers are low in alcohol and often consumed by the monks for festive occasions. There are also Enkel or single beers. These beers are no longer produced under that name although some breweries do make a blond ale that would fill this role. These beers form the basic recipe for the bigger beers produced by the monastery and could also be the Patersbier. They are typically a table beer and may be served with most meals within the monastery. Dubbel (or Double) is the next step up the ladder and virtually all of the Trappist breweries produce this style. It is usually a dark rich beer with sweetness from both the

Belgian town of Chimay in 1862. The brewery produces the most widely distributed beers of any Trappist brand, as well as a Patersbier solely for the monks. Chimay Rouge (Red) is 7% abv. Served in the 750 ml cork and cage bottle, it is known as Première. It is a dark brown colour and has a sweet, fruity aroma. ChimayBleue (Blue) comes in at 9% abv and is a darker ale. When it is in the 750 ml cork and cage bottle, it is known as Grande Réserve. This copperbrown beer has a creamy head and a slightly bitter taste. Considered to be the “classic” Chimay ale, it exhibits a considerable depth of fruity, peppery character. It will also age up to ten years in a cellar. Chimay Blanche (White), or Chimay Triple, 8% abv golden tripel. In the 750 ml bottle, it is known as Cinq Cents. This crisp beer bears a light orange colour, and is the most hopped and driest of the three. A fourth, Patersbier known as ChimayDoree is golden in color and much sought after by Chimay fans as it almost never leaves the monastery.

Westmalle Westmalle Breweryis a Belgian Trappist brewery located in the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle. They produces three beers although only two are widely known. The brewery produces three beers. WestmalleDubbel is a 7% abvDubbel. WestmalleTripel is a 9.5% abvtripel, was first brewed in 1934 and the recipe has not changed since 1956. It is made with pale candy sugar and has a very pale colour produced from a mash of light pilsener malts. StyrianGoldings hops are used along with some German varieties and the classic Saazpilsener hop. After a long secondary fermentation WestmalleTripel is bottled with a dose of sugar and yeast. Westmalle Extra is a 5% abv beer with limited availability, the Patersbier we spoke of earlier. Legend has it that the choice of three types of beers was based on the Holy Trinity.

Here’s where things take a slight turn. Orval Brewery is located within the walls of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Orval in the Gaume region of Belgium. The brewery produces two beers, which are marketed as trappist beer, Orval and Petite Orval. Orval is not your typical Trappist beer. The beer has a complex and unusual flavor (slightly tart) and aroma produced by a unique strain of yeast. The beer is light in color, slightly cloudy, and has a large, foamy head. There is a complex aroma of leather, spice, and many other earthy components. Petite Orval is a 3.5% abv, beer brewed only for the monks (Patersbier). Although not generally available for sale, it can be purchased in the monastery itself or the café near the monastery. Rochefort The brewery is located inside the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy, near the town of Rochefort, and has been brewing beer since 1595. There are approximately 15 monks resident at the monastery. The monks are very secretive about the brewing process and the brewery is not open to the public, therefore much of the information publicly known about the brewery comes from only a few sources. They produce three beers. Rochefort 6 (red cap) with an ABV of 7.5%. It has a reddish color, very consistent

texture with a slightly spicy aroma and an intense taste of caramel, fruit, and hints of raisins. It is only brewed about once per year, representing approximately 1% of total beer production, thus is quite difficult to obtain.Rochefort 8 (green cap) is a brown beer at 9.2% ABV. It is yellowish-brown color, with a more pronounced aroma, more fruits and a slight amount of sweetness. This variety constitutes the largest proportion of production.Rochefort 10 (blue cap) has an ABV of 11.3%. Reddish-brown color, with a very compact head and an aroma of figs, feels like honey in the mouth. The alcohol profile is a major component in the flavor of this rich ale. It is very similar to 6 and 8, but has much more of everything. Achel The history of the brewery goes back to 1648, when Dutch monks built a chapel in Achel. The chapel became an abbey in 1686, but was destroyed during the period of the French Revolution. In 1844, the ruins were rebuilt by monks from Westmalle, and various farming activities began. The first beer to be brewed on the site was the Patersvaatje in 1852, and 19 years later in 1871, the site became a Trappist monastery, with beer brewing a regular activity.In 1914 during World War I, the monks left the abbey due to German occupation. The Germans dismantled the brewery in 1917 to salvage the approximately 700 kg of copper. In 1998

the monks decided to begin brewing again. Monks from the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle and Rochefort Abbey assisted in the building of the new brewery.In 2001, the brewery released the Achel 8° beers, the first real commercial release. They make five beers The Achel 5° in both a blond and brown, Achel8° in both blond and brown, and finally Achel Extra which is brown in color and is 9.5 percent ABV.

they were sold under the name of the abbey for a long time. They have only recently started selling under the name La Trappe. They make a large variety of beers and really stretch out beyond the traditional styles. Of course they make a blond, dubbel and trippel which are spectacular. But, they also make a Trappist Wit, a Belgian wheat beer produced inside the abbey, as well as a Quadrupel and a Bock. Perhaps the most interesting is the Isid’or produced in the style of the very first beer made at the abbey and named after their first brewmaster. Westvleteren Considered the Holy Grail amongst many beer lovers. Westvleteren is available to purchase only at the monastery and the small café across the street. There is a thriving grey market business in the product and a single bottle of the 12 can go for forty dollars. The only way to acquire the beer in a strictly legal manner is to phone the

brewery for an appointment several weeks in advance, then arrive at the brewery where one of the brothers will check your name, provide you with two cases of whichever beer is available at the time, and have you sign a pledge not to re-sell the product. Tourists will frequently stop at In De Vrede café across the street to enjoy a couple of Westvleteren beers and perhaps some of the cheese also made by the monks. The three beers produced are the Blond, 8 or Extra, and the 12 or ABT. The 12 is the most sought after, frequently appearing on RateBeer and Beer Advocate as the best beer in the world. Takin’ a Walk On The WILD SIDE by King James Swann

Hello again craft beer lovers. Today let’s chat about BRUX Domesticated Wild Ale, a new collaborative effort between Sierra Nevada and Russian River Brewing, both in California. A “wild ale” of sorts, BRUX is a beer made to age, change and evolve over time. The brewers refer to it as wild because they add a touch of Brettanomyces, a wild bacteria known for causing funky, farmy flavours to the beer during its bottle conditioning phase. I must say they were spot on with regards to the funk. You immediately taste tropical fruit, fresh cut grass and horse blanket as the beer first falls onto your palate and then a spiced sensation that settles into a dry finish as you swallow. Dark Golden in colour, the head doesn’t last long and there is a slightly oily resinous feel on the back of your tongue a minute or so after that first sip. I know dry and oily don’t usually fall together in the same description but this isn’t your average everyday brew. As stated earlier this beer was made to age and I’m quite curios to see how it changes over time. Isn’t it interesting how beer is now brewed with aging in mind much a like fine wine? My guess is the “Brett” will begin to cause a tangy character good for balancing the farmy attributes and make for more robust complexities. Great food pairings include braised lamb shanks with mint sauce, or a medium hot chicken tikka masala with garlic Nan bread and a cooling yogurt sauce. Good proper English comfort food!

“Food that best describes our home…multi-cultural and multi-ethnic” One of my favorite chefs comes from my father taking me to one of his friend’s restaurants; Eddie Matney. Eddies house is a place that I highly suggest making an appearance at, the food is incredible. My boyfriend actually took me out here for our anniversary; since he knows I enjoy new happy hours and all! MondaySaturday 4pm-6pm are the times to get smashing offerings. I LOVE the tuna tarter nachos with Arizona corn and cilantro for only $6, and the grilled honey-spiced chicken lollipops. My boyfriend ordered the mint pesto grilled lamb chops, with mint cumin hummus; to die for ($9.50)! I paired this meal with a nice glass of white wine for $6 during the happy hour. The happy hour menu has a lot more to please your palette also. Eddie Matney is definitely dubbed as the number one chef in the valley, so if you haven’t been to any of his other ventures, then you can start at this one. 7042 E. Indian School Rd. Slipknot is releasing their latest effort Antennas to Hell on July 24th; a “best of” collection documenting its inimitable career. The album is scheduled to be released while the band is spending its summer as the main attraction of the 2012 edition of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, as well as curating and headlining the inaugural year of their very own festival, Knotfest. This summer’s Mayhem and Knotfest outings celebrate the band and the life of late bassist Paul Gray, and will serve as ‘the end of the beginning’ for Slipknot – this summer’s performances will be the fan’s last chance to see them as they are now. Of course the band will continue- but just as inevitable with Slipknot, is the fact that the band will evolve - and the future is unwritten. Antennas to Hell serves as a companion to that celebration. The two-disc version of Antennas to Hell includes a bonus live CD that captures the band’s 2009 performance at the legendary Download Festival in the U.K. The live disc showcases the band playing a set of career spanning classics in front of 80,000 rabid fans. The journey from - “(sic)” - track 1 on their self-titled debut - to “Snuff” the haunting No. 1 rock track from 2008’s All Hope Is Gone - proves that. The album features fan favorites, live classics and well-known radio hits.

Get ready for big-brass pizzazz, jumpblues boogie and some of the best rockabilly currently being performed when three-time Grammy Award winner Brian Setzer and his 18-piece orchestra take the stage. Known as a “Musician’s Musician,” Setzer is credited with consistently taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while single-handedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the ‘80’s and swing in the ‘90’s).

The singer-guitarist first rose to prominence in the early ‘80s as the frontman for rockabilly revivalists the Stray Cats. The group scored several chart-topping hits before disbanding. He then formed the swing-reviving Brian Setzer Orchestra in the early ’90s, and the group made its record debut in 1994. Setzer became an unlikely commercial force again toward the dawn of the millennium, when the rock climate of the late ‘90s allowed for a spirited retro-swing revival. The fad did little to expand jazz’s hardcore audience, but Setzer’s band gained some momentum that would help it remain economically viable through the 2000s. If that wasn’t enough, Setzer took it upon himself to transform into the Jack Frost of jump guitar for the holiday season, spreading swingin’ yuletide cheer to only the coolest cats. The result: three best-selling holiday albums (Boogie Woogie Christmas, Dig That Crazy Christmas, Christmas Rocks!: The Best Of Collection) and an annual Christmas tour that

has certainly become the most exciting annual rockin’ Christmas event on the planet.

The fact that he was one of the first men to do what he did, people claimed his stunts were magic. Many of his stunts could have featured in this list because they were all so original: the Milk Can, the suspended straightjacket escape, being buried alive. However, the one that features is the Chinese Water Torture Cell. After the Milk Can, Houdini gained a large number of imitators. So, to outdo them and prove that he really was the king of escapology, he introduced this one. His feet were locked in stocks as he hung upside down and was lowered into a tank filled with water. Take that imitators!
