Dating Scene HeatS up in tHe Valley When Mary’s husband of 26 years

passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked “Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” When Mary replied, “I don’t know.” Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene it’s becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. That’s where Great Expectations Scottsdale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Expectations has perfected a suite of matchmaking services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Unlike other dating services that entrust applicants to input their

own data, Great Expectations professionals meet every potential client in person to interview and screen each applicant. Recently, Great Expectations Scottsdale announced Tammy Smith, who has been with the company since 1998, as their new Center Director. Tammy has had the pleasure of meeting and matching multiple couples through the years. “At Great Expectations we personally meet and interview each member so they are pre-screened before they can join. We also run background checks on each member. When you join an online dating site, you don’t know who you’re connecting with,” says Tammy. “We find it’s best for our clients to not be surprised by who they’re meeting. We take our own photos and we provide videotaped conversations as well. We will be as involved in your experience as much as you want us to be, acting as a personal dating liaison and coaching you along the way.” In addition to pre-screening each potential client, Great Expectations provides ample opportunities for members to meet like-minded singles in whichever environment they’re most comfortable. “We hold a variety of fun, safe, singles events to help get you out into the Great Expectations community,” says Ashley AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Fox, the Great Expectations Scottsdale Event Coordinator. “After you become a member you are invited to every event from speed dating, hiking, cooking classes, casino nights, masquerade balls, wine tastings and much more!” So say goodbye to blind dates, awkward set-ups and scary online experiences. and contact Great Expectations today. It’s safe, private, experienced matchmaking made easy. Take the first step today. Mary & Gene have the same thoughts as many of our success stories about Great Expectations: “It worked for us! If it wasn’t for Great Expectations and its staff we wouldn’t have found each other!” And to anyone considering joining Great Expectations they add: “What do you have to lose?”

Other exciting season highlights include collaborations with visual artists, choirs, Shakespearean actors, vocalists, and adding a live music performance to a silent movie. Details for each concert are listed under the “events” section. To bring their audiences the most intriguing programs possible, they perform music from a large cross section of history: from Haydn and Handel to Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovksy, Prokofiev and living composers including world premieres. Arizona Pro Arte (APA) is a flexible ensemble model for innovation in the performance of classical music

Arizona Pro Arte offers audiences an opportunity to explore music through an unusual mix of the arts. By creating collaborations between performing arts and visual arts, the APA shatters common expectations. It leads audiences through explorations of synergies between music, dance, theater, film and visual arts that kindle the kind of meaningful experiences that only the arts can inspire. By combining the arts in less traditional performances, we aim to provide new resources to Arizona to expand its cultural richness. Our repertoire consists of music from Haydn and Handel through world premieres. Arizona Pro Arte is the evolution of a performing arts organization. Originally founded in 2004 as the Scottsdale Baroque Orchestra, it was an affiliate ensemble of Musica Nova. In 2010 the Scottsdale Baroque Orchestra became an ensemble partnered with Scottsdale Musical Arts, where beginning in 2012, it continues under its new name and mission as Arizona Pro Arte. ‘Neil Young Journeys’ ‘The Last Ride’ Henry Thomas plays Hank Williams who, in the days leading up to his untimely death hires a young man (Jesse James) to drive him to West Virginia and Ohio for a pair of comeback performances. Fred Dalton Thompson, Kaley Cuoco, Stephen Tobolowsky and Ray McKinnon also star. (PG-13 –102 minutes) Joseph: “‘The Last Ride’ may feature the depth of country and western singer Hank Williams’ music but it operates with none of the immediacy. As a result, the new biopic from director Harry Thomason about Williams’ final days is rather boring – much more than you might expect of a motion picture centered on a man who had such an intense influence on the music industry. The problems spur from screenwriters Howard Klausner and Dub Cornett’s determination to impart insights about life in general

Musician Neil Young recounts insightful and introspective stories from his youth to filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who then weaves them together with his music in an effort to portray a personal, retrospective look into the heart and soul of the artist. (PG – 87 minutes) Stan: “With extreme close-ups of the legendary performer and his classic tunes, one can see the passion and the fire in the eyes as the heart and soul of Neil Young are exposed through his songs. A high point, filmmaker Jonathan Demme let every one of Neil Young’s featured musical numbers play in their entirety which makes for a very reflective 90 minute visit with the icon.” Grade: B ‘Step Up: Revolution’* Kathryn McCormick plays a woman who arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer and soon falls in love with a young man (Ryan Guzman) who leads a

Director Harry Thomason (‘The Last Ride’)

“They wanted to see it that night. So that was sort of scary. We talked the projectionist into staying and they came in close to Midnight and we sat through the film again. At the end of it, Jett Williams got up and walked over to me and stopped. There was a beat there where I thought that I was going to be served papers and that I was about to be sued over the picture. “But then she put her arms around me and said, ‘Finally, someone got it right! That is very close to how it was like for my dad!’ Then Keith Adkinson came up to me and said, ‘Consider us an arrow in your quiver. We will support this film all of the way.’ So that was a good night and worth the walk through the jungle. I would have bet any amount of money it would have gone the other way but they have been the most supportive.” – Harry Thomason

By Joseph J. Airdo “While making this movie, I learned a little bit of what Hank Williams learned. It does not matter how much trouble and how much pain you have – and we were not in real pain, we were in economic pain – you have got to walk through it. We just kept going and managed to get the picture finished. To tell the truth, the people who originally brought the picture to us had represented that the Williams family knew all about it and were going to bless it. “However, we were showing the picture in Nashville, trying to make a deal with a record company, and about halfway through the screening we got a call from the people representing Hank Williams’ estate, including his daughter Jett Williams and her husband Keith Adkinson. They said that they had heard that we were in town and had done this film on Hank and that they did not know anything about it.

only choreography wise, the actors are great. They understand that this is a dance film, so they made sure that they casted actors like ‘tWitch’ that can dance, and that is a blessing for someone like myself as a choreographer because its great to work with talent that understands your language, your lingo which is dance, and as well they understand their own which is acting. “This film has a little bit of every thing, I think people of all ages, of all styles of dance are going to love it because there’s everything from modern jazz, to stepping, to stunts. People are excited about it, they’ve already seen the other three, and they’re expecting big things, and I truly think we’ve given them that!

In the early 70’s, Richard Gere played Danny Zuko in a London production of Grease.

“What’s different about this film from so many other dance films is that it’s ‘flash mod related’ as one big unit of people that are dancing together, coming together as opposed to separation of crews, or teams. Everybody has the same common goal and everybody is fighting for the same common goal, to win. They know you’ve got to come together to make it happen. Bet You Didn’t Know!

In “William Shatner’s Get a Life!,” which premieres 5 p.m. Saturday, July 28 on EPIX (Cox Communications’ channel 310 and Dish Network’s channel 380 in Phoenix), William Shatner – who played Captain James T. Kirk from 1966 to 1969 (and reprised the role several times thereafter) – examines the mystery, longevity and the cultural phenomena of “Star Trek” and its long-obsessed fans.

“I had written a book called ‘Get a Life,’ in which I did my due diligence to talk to some fascinating people who were going to ‘Star Trek’ conventions and told their stories. I concluded in the book that these people go to these conventions to see and to have fun with one another. Now, 12 years later, I finished making ‘The Captains’ and I was asked to do a convention story. So I thought that I would now go back and talk with these interesting people who go to Continued on Page 16...

It never occurred to me that it is the mythology and that people are buying into a ritual. I was gratified by the conclusions that were reached and I was intrigued by what I discovered. There is a deep and even mystical reason why Trekkers go to conventions. The people who do not go to conventions are missing out on something really wonderful. “I love the mythology of it all. I love the concepts that we talked about. It was a voyage of discovery. Plus, in talking with these people, their stories became very meaningful. I gained a whole new appreciation of the audience that comes to ‘Star Trek’ conventions. I now believe that [‘Star Trek’s’ enduring popularity] is a result of it filling a need in everybody’s psyche. It just so happens that the people who come to conventions are able to plug in to that need.” – William Shatner

Continuing the ‘debunking’ of the article ‘Readers Digest: 13 Things a Movie Theater Employee Won’t Tell You’ by Ilana Strauss; Brian Deveny, theater owner (since 1975) and Chairmen of the Arizona Theater Owners Association; David Ramsey, movie critic (since 1994) and President of the Phoenix Film Critics Society; and myself, a movie reviewer (since 2006) and Film Columnist with AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine, examine the next items on the list of 13… 8. Think you’re saving calories by ordering small popcorn? That “small” popcorn could have been a medium last month. Brian: [With a chuckle!] I don’t understand that one! All I can say is if you’re buying the smallest popcorn, of course you’re going to save calories, you’re buying less volume. That small popcorn could have been a medium last month, it would be such a hassle for theaters to switch out their bags size once they have a good system going, and the bag manufactures only have 4 sizes anyway! They have small, medium, large, and extra large. That’s all they carry! David: This one doesn’t make sense. Who cares what it was called last week if it’s the smallest size they have now. Stan: This one seems to fall into that ‘no brainer’ category again since the size of the bags are readily established visually. If a theater were to either ‘down-size’ or ‘up-size’ their containers, it would be noticed!

9. Stop getting angry that your food isn’t ready. Microwaves can’t cook frozen pizzas in 30 seconds! Brian: I don’t carry these types of items at my theaters and this is why; the White Castles, and the Frenchfries, egg rolls, pizza, and chicken fingers, or whatever because, frankly, there’s not enough profit margin in them. You just can’t go buy a case of frozen pizza and figure out your profit. One has to figure in the cost to heat that up, employee handling time, along with the total cost in labor. All those steps come into play. How much is that pizza taking time away from another order that could be filled. How many sales that were not made while prepping and preparing that one item, it’s not worth it! David: Not sure they use microwaves for everything. If you order a hot food item be reasonable it takes time to cook/heat. Stan: Most of us use microwaves in our homes to cook a variety of foods and are aware of the general cooking times for microwavable items. Attending multiple screenings in a week’s time, I’ve yet to see any patrons ‘raise a ruckus’ over preparation times for their order! ‘Readers Digest: 13 Things a Movie Theater Employee Won’t Tell You’ by Ilana Strauss. 8th Annual Arizona State Poker Championship 2632-2_TSR_Poker_azplayercover.indd 1

6/28/12 3:04 PM

Get ready to ante up for the Arizona State Poker Championship as this No Limit Texas Hold’ Em tournament makes its return to Talking Stick Resort for the 8th year in a row beginning August 10th thru August 14th. This prestigious tournament draws more than 1,000 poker amateurs and professionals, from Arizona along players from across the country and even some international entrants, all competing for a share of the $1 million prize pool. “The Arizona State Poker Championship

An annual fixture on the resort’s poker room schedule, the Championship attracts many players throughout the region with hopes of hitting it big. This year marks the third time in the state championship’s history that the prize pool has hit $1 million, ensuring the top 100 players walk away with a minimum of $2,250. First place winner will take home $208,300, a championship ring and trophy. Second and third place winners will take home $127,500 and $85,000 respectively, as well as trophies to commemorate their win. The Arizona State Poker Championship will begin at 9am on Friday, August 10th kicking off 5 days of play in the ARENA Poker Room. Prior to the big week, players have an opportunity to participate in daily satellite tournaments for a chance “win a seat” in the state championship or they can opt to pay a $1,000 buy-in along with the $70 entry fee. The buy-in provides each player with $15,000 worth

state-of-the-art sound and lighting, which will greatly enhance the overall thrill and intensity of the last day. Also adding to the excitement, this year - Talking Stick Resort welcomes special guest, Tiffany Michelle, who was named one of Maxim Magazines’ Top 20 Hottest Celebrity Poker Players of 2012! Tiffany will take the Showroom stage to host the final round of the Championships. This very talented lady holds the record for the largest field a female has ever conquered in a live poker tournament, when she finished in 17th place out of 6,844 players and was the last woman standing at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

of tournament chips. Entries into the tournament are unlimited and players eliminated on days one or two are allowed a re-buy in order to continue playing to reach the final table. Knowing that poker is a sport where competitors must draw on both mental strength and physical endurance, Talking Stick Resort will also host “Warm Up” Tournaments on August 6-9. These warmup events give players just enough time to practice their poker faces and build up their skills and endurance before the big weekend starting August 10. “This year we have expanded the championship to run five days and have taken the final table into our showroom to allow for a larger viewing audience,” said Odekirk. “There is a certain prestige that comes from winning a big tournament in the state’s largest poker room, and we are always looking for ways to enhance that moment for our players.”

Women inspired by Michelle’s feats should know that The Arizona State Poker Championship isn’t the only exciting high-stakes event hitting The ARENA Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort. On September 8-10, the resort will also host the 6th Annual Arizona State Ladies Poker Championship. Pending her schedule, Tiffany Michelle is considering entering the tournament herself. If she does enter, she will join other poker queens competing for a share of an $80,000 prize pool, with first place taking home a grand prize of $18,649, a trophy and championship bracelet. The top ten Ladies at the final table will each walk home with a minimum of $1,360. Whether new to the game or a seasoned player, The Arizona State Poker Championship is the best platform for any gamer to try their luck or just hang out to catch all the action. For more information about the Arizona State Poker Championship and Talking Stick Resort’s other tournaments, visit the ARENA Poker Room or go on line at: www. TalkingStickResort.com or call (480) 8507734.

Over the course of the championship, a designated number of participants will play on days 1, 2 and 3 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug 10-12) until 6pm. Those days of play will determine the semifinalists, who will play on day 4 (Monday, August 13th) until just 10 players remain. That brings us to day 5 – Tuesday August 14th where the final 10 will play until a champion is crowned. For the first time since the inception of the championship, the final table will be played in the resort’s showroom and broadcasted throughout the property. is a big source of pride for us. It’s our biggest event and continues to grow each year,” said Kent Odekirk, director of poker at Talking Stick Resort. “Because of the large prize pool and our top-notch facility, the championship has grown from mostly local players to a competition of the best in the west.”

Chardonnay-Cabernet. It’s not a new blend, it’s a popsicle! Here in Phoenix in the middle of July, you have to get creative. Last week we attended an event at Superstition Farms – Super Farm Farmer’s Market. We were there for a networking mixer for

Edible Exchange, creatively named – Moos, Booze and Schmooze. After checking in, we purchased some farm fresh veggies and ordered a burger from the Super Farm Food Truck parked alongside the enclosed, airconditioned farmer’s market. Bellies full we walked past the petting zoo area and straight over to the bar where an ice cold brew from Phoenix’s own Old World Brewery awaited us. Farmer Casey came by passing out “winesicles” made with Chardonnay, Cabernet and fruit. That was just the beginning. As the evening progressed, we had farm fresh ice cream made that day from cows milked earlier that morning that were standing not 50 feet away from the farm cabana. The ice cream was topped with your choice of booze from the bar. I opted for a port wine. Others chose from Amaretto or Kahlua or Chambord. The next course was a mudslide/milkshake made with Kahlua, chocolate pieces and Amaretto. It was served with an oversized straw so the chocolate pieces wouldn’t clog it up – I hate that! Oh, wait, we’re not done yet. The final course was a Piña Colada ice cream terrine with a Malibu Rumtopping and toasted coconut flakes! Be sure to check out their website for upcoming events. www. superstitionfarm.com

SOMETHING NICE AND FAMILIAR OR NEW AND DIFFERENT? By Marlene P. Baumann

Ask for these wines at finer restauarants Valley-wide www.distinctiveitalianwines.com

Hmm, a familiar Cabernet Sauvignon that you’ve enjoyed many times before or try something different? Faced with so many wine choices, we often ask ourselves this question. For example, you might be interested in a blended wine from a respected winery, but what about that tempting Chianti Classico from a small producer unknown to you. You don’t know the blended wine but you’re familiar with the winery that made it. By contrast, you love Chianti Classico—will you take a chance on a vineyard that’s a virtual unknown? The choice often comes down to circumstances and mood. Great restaurant menus and great wine lists are designed to provide something for everyone—and for all our different moods. I like to call to mind how you might plan a trip to a wine producing region. Would your itinerary be filled with visits to producers you know and love? Or would you visit vineyards that are completely new to you? One of my friends looks forward to visiting the same two wineries in Napa every year and wants to taste all the wines they offer. Other friends visit wine regions and wander around the zone deliberately looking for little known wineries along the way. There is something appealing to each approach and we all probably have a little of both in us. I’ll leave you with a few practical things to consider: 1.

Restaurants and wine shops renowned for their wine have talented staff and go through a rigorous process before they put a wine on their list. They carefully choose the wines—you can trust them. It’s unlikely a bad wine would make their list.

2.

It’s smart to make use of your smart phone or similar device to quickly look up vintages, producers, ratings, and other details.

3.

Wines made from a blend of different grapes like cabernet and merlot – no matter who produced them—are more adventurous.

4.

Many times, let your wallet be your guide. Wine producers are proud of the “winemaker’s special selection” and they charge accordingly. It may be special; it may be too creative; it may be perfect for the occasion.

You get to decide and I know you’ll make a wise decision!

Pour Wine and a Good Time Happens Great wine, food, laughs, and new experiences happen at wine release events. Nothing is more fun than being a guest at a wine event sharing a wine that is being released for the first time and hearing the winemaker explain how that wine was made. Or hearing the breaking news that the winery received that morning their first ever rating from Wine Spectator for their first vintage Petite Sirah and it was an astounding 88. This experience is being repeated all over Arizona in very unique and terrific wine events in Arizona’s wine country. On a beautiful evening in the Chiricahua Mountains all of that and more happened at a Lawrence Dunham Vineyards’ Wine Release Winemaker Dinner at Sunglow Ranch in Pearce, AZ. People traveled from San Diego, Cottonwood, Sierra Vista, Fountain Hills, Tucson, Gilbert, Phoenix, Chandler, Willcox, and the local area for the love of wine, great food, and sharing the experience with new people. Sunglow Ranch partners with a local winery to host these gourmet dinners and pairs each course with different wines from that winery in the Greater Willcox area. For this event with Lawrence Dunham Vineyards, 35

Winemaker dinner hosts: Curt Dunham, Peggy Fiandaca and Brooks Bradbury guests enjoyed four courses expertly paired with the winery’s Rhone varietal wines. A special treat was that the award-winning Petite Sirah was used by Chef Sarah Stanley for the sauce in the main course. There is a lot happening in Arizona Wine Country. The wines are becoming well-respected and the people making these wines are knowledgeable, fun, and approachable. So venture out to an upcoming wine event where you will create great memories with new friends. Lawrence Dunham Vineyards www.LawrenceDunhamVineyards. com Sunglow Ranch www.sunglowranch.com

BEER! SECTION

BEER! ONLINE AND IN TOUCH WITH ALL THINGS BEER The internet is a great tool for many applications. Just about any information you could possibly want can be found right there. Of course, this being a beer column, we are going to look at what is out there for our personal beverage of choice. First off, how do you use the internet to determine what beer to drink? There are countless beer web sites out there that review beers and talk about what’s available. The two most popular are RateBeer (www. ratebeer.com) and Beer Advocate (www.beeradvocate.com). Both sites have a variety of features with the focus being on beer ratings

36

July 26th, 2012 - August 1st, 2012

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” and public forums. The ratings are consumer driven so while wine uses folks with theoretically perfect palates to rate their products, these ratings feature everyday drinkers giving you an idea of what they think of the beer. Beer is rated on several categories: Aroma, Appearance, Flavor and Palate for RateBeer and Look, Smell, Taste, Feel and Drink for Beer Advocate. A composite score for each rating is compiled and then it is converted to a percentile. Each site uses a slightly different formula. The formulas used are designed to protect against abuse, but they also produce other interesting results. RateBeer tends to have more extremes, that is, more beers are rated with extremely high scores and more have extremely

low scores. Beer Advocate’s system yields more balance between the scoring and 98+ scores are extremely rare, while 50 and under scores are also rare. Both web sites also allow you to compare the beers against other beers of the same style. Given that many of the raters have a preference for strong beers, there is a disproportionate amount of Imperial Stouts, Belgian Quadrupels and other high alcohol beers represented at the top of the list. Are any of these great beers available in Arizona? Of course they are thirteen of RateBeer’s Top Fifty beers have been sold in Arizona in the past twelve months including Lost Abbey Angel’s Share, Bell’s Expedition Stout, St. Bernardus

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

ABT 12 and Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast. Beer Advocate has their list of the “Top Beers on Planet Earth” and 19 of their top 100 were sold in Arizona last year. This includes Alesmith Speedway Stout, Drie Fonteinen Schaerbeekse Kriek, Ballast Sculpin and Bell’s Hopslam. As you explore on these sites you can break it down by country and style as well. The other big part of these sites is the forums. Forums serve as an exchange of information between the users of the site and they are broken down by category. There are regional forums, Beer Talk, New Releases, Trading and Industry News forums and all are fairly active. Recent topics in the regional forum for Arizona include groups

Of course not everybody wants to participate in these forums and that’s okay, there is other information on the web sites as well. Both sites include regular articles, a

calendar of events, reviews of beer bars and restaurants, as well as other beer related items.

Social Media has become a haven for great beer information as well. Facebook boasts a ton of beer related content. In fact, there are several groups and pages dedicated to Arizona beer, including Arizona Craft Beer Lovers, Arizona Society of Homebrewers, Arizona Let’s Talk Craft Beer and the Arizona Trappiste Club. Most distributors have their own page, and many breweries have

There are many other sites out there that are beer related. Two of our favorites are The Beer Mapping Project (www.beermapping.com) and Brookston Beer Bulletin (www. brookstonbeerbulletin.com). Beer Mapping provides maps of cities and countries and marks locations of breweries, beer bars, restaurants, beer stores and homebrew shops. If you travel this is a great way to locate the best beer near your hotel. Jay Brooks is a former buyer for BevMo who maintains one of the best blogs out there. Now there are many great beer bloggers but

planning private tasting events, availability of Bell’s Hopslam and various beer festivals. Discussions about big events are regular and following them is a great way to determine which events are worthwhile to attend and which aren’t; post mortems follow every event and allows people to share their experiences. Sometimes it’s interesting to follow another region just to see what is going on in other parts of the country, or even the world.

Brookston Beer Bulletin is at the top. There is a small San Francisco bias since that’s where it’s based, but Jay has a great amount of information and opinion on world wide issues and is always a good read. Additionally he maintains a great reference of brewery web site, other blogs, events, beer trivia and more.

a local Arizona focused page as well. If you are on Twitter, likewise you can get plenty of beer information, both local and national. Brewery and distributor web sites also provide a great resource, albeit only for specific brands. However if you are really looking for in depth information, these are some of the best places to go. Some of the best looking and most informative brewery web sites include The Lost Abbey (www.lostabbey.com), Breckenridge (www.breckbrew.com), Oskar Blues (www.oskarblues.com) and Great Divide (www.greatdivide. com). Locally, World Class Beeer (www.worldclassbeer.com) has a very educational and interesting

web site. Besides offering detailed information about all the beers and general beer knowledge, the web site feature BeerSpy. BeerSpy allows a consumer to search for a beer and find the bars or stores closest to a given location that offer that product. When you decide you just have to have your Great White, this is the way to find it. There are so many more opportunities to use the internet for information. So dig in to the suggestions here and increase your beer knowledge.

Hopping Across The Pond, What Fun! by King James Swann

Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s chat about Pond Hopper a collaboration between Odell Brewing and Thornbridge Brewing in jolly old blighty. A “Double Extra Pale” by definition this little gem gives it to you smooth and hoppy all at once. The development of flavours is really a bit odd as you take you r first sip. There is hop character to burn but at the same time there is an almost sweet biscuit malt character that balances everything just so. A very nice brew yet I want more, or do I? Will one definitive essence eventually consume my taste buds? NO, and it’s OK. There is a ton of tropical fruit on the nose that fades away as your first sip begins to take hold. Malt first, hops second but in amazing balance. Lately I think my palate has been trained for west coast and Russian imperial flavour profiles. This brew is the perfect soul to make me take a step back and think…what happened to balance? It’s been to long since I have had a Fuller’s London Pride, to long since my taste buds have seen the likes of Sam Smith Old Brewery Pale ale. It’s been too long. Great food parings include pot roast and mash with mushy peas or even something as simple as a grilled ham and cheddar cheese sandwich with spicy Dijon mustard. Wonder stuff and great for enjoying a beer with more complexity than you might first realize.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

The perfect boozy pairing is a good shot of dry smoky single malt scotch to sip upon while enjoying this gem of a brew. Leave it to Doug Odell to remember his roots and take it back to a simpler time when even big beers were all about that balance of everything that makes for great drinking. Until Next Week, Cheers!

Anyone who wants more flavors in their food and an alternative to typical southwestern style hot sauces, is now in luck. Brad Child has redefined the standard conception of hot sauce. Madison’s Hot and Madison’s “M” sauces are both made with low calorie, gluten free, vegan ingredients and both are extremely versatile - much more so than other condiments in the same category. “It is a throwback to the way our ancestors cooked. It’s all natural and has no preservatives,” says Child. Child has over twenty years experience as a restaurant consultant, but it was in his own home, after being dissatisfied with a recipe for roasted peppers he had found online that he created Madison’s. As more and more of his friends tasted it, followed by chefs in the restaurant industry, it was clear that he had stumbled into something special. Realizing the potential of his creation, as well as a lack of choices in the hot sauce arena, Child set out to market his product under the aegis of one of the great names in American History, President James Madison. Channeling President Madison’s dedication to the power of choice as a fundamental element in our way of life and his unwillingness to accept the status quo, Brad Child honors that freedom. Madison’s two flavors are both more nuanced than other sauces in the same category. Madison’s Original Hot Sauce has a bit of kick but will stand apart from typical southwestern flavor many would expect from a bottle labeled “hot sauce.” The milder and extremely versatile Madison’s “M” Sauce can be used to add spice to any dish or as a marinade for any hearty entrée. He is reinventing hot sauce by hearkening to the recipes of our forefathers, before food was loaded with preservatives and artificial substitutes, and when spices were essential for flavoring any meat dish. Madison’s is something new and nuanced and will appeal to gourmands from coast to coast.

Saturday, August 4th at Celebrity Theatre Summer in the valley continues to heat up, as Grown & Sexy’s BLACKstreet and Ginuwine will be performing live at the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 4th. With Chauncey “Black” Hannibal, legendary producer and swingbeat creator Teddy “Street” Riley and Dave Hollister back in the saddle, you’ve got the real BLACKstreet, no diggity, no doubt! For over 15 years, they were part of a four-man group that is notorious for doing the dance move “The Lean” at concerts. Brandishing an electrifying mix of soul, funk, hip-hop and gospel, BLACKstreet delivered its self-titled debut album in the summer of 1994. The disc was certified platinum, rose to #7 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and spawned three hit singles: “Before I Let You Go” (Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100), “Joy” (#8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list) and “Booti Call” (Top 20 Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Airplay). These, combined with MTV and BET airplay and a thriving tour, established BLACKstreet as one of the most promising outfits on the R&B landscape. BLACKstreet’s pop breakthrough came in 1996 with Another Level. More specifically, it was the inescapable smash single “No Diggity,” which featured special guest Dr. Dre that put them over the top. “No Diggity” reigned for four weeks on top of the pop charts and won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal by a Duo or Group; it also pushed sales

of Another Level past the four million mark. Singer-songwriter, dancer and actor Ginuwine released a number of multi-platinum and platinum-selling albums and singles during the ‘90s heyday of hip-hop soul. His first album Ginuwine...the Bachelor reached double platinum status thanks to the No. 1 R&B single «Pony.» The Life (2001) featured Ginuwine’s biggest hit single: “Differences” spent four weeks at the top of the R&B chart, and reached No.4 on the Hot 100. Last year, Ginuwine released his seventh studio album titled, Elgin, after his government name. His film career includes a role as R&B singer «Romeo» in the film Juwanna Mann. He also costarred in the Gospel Music Channel’s debut of John Ruffin’s stage play The Ideal Husband and can be spotted in a Jodeci video. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. $34 for General Admission; $43 and $56 for Reserved Seating. Tickets are on sale now at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge.

SUPER DUPER BRAVE…. Or Super Duper Dumb? You be the Judge!

defying, hair-standing, jaw-dropping feats?

Moving forward, we continue with a closer look at ten of the most dangerous stunts ever successfully performed in the history of man-kind by the bravest and most daring of men. In 1980, Dan Goodwin witnessed the fire in the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, which killed 84 people. He believed those people could have been saved if he had been allowed to climb the building to connect the cables from the ground, which could have ferried the people to safety. Goodwin climbed the Sears Tower wearing a homemade Spider Man outfit. This was a great way to stick to fingers up at the authorities who would not allow him to help save his fellow man. Goodwin gained an instant cult following, some even declared him a hero. Even Stan Lee (creator of Spider Man) offered his praise. Since then, Goodwin has climbed the Renaissance Tower, the John Hancock Center, the North Tower of the World Trade Center (pre 9/11) and the CN Tower.
