Kevin Bacon

By Jacqueline cutler

Footloose (1984) Kevin Bacon was 24 when he tapped into his

inner teen to play Ren McCormack, 17. Ren moves from Chicago to a small town where rock music and dancing are forbidden. But he needs them, and so do the other kids – especially before prom. Worth watching just for the warehouse scene, where Ren pops a cassette into his VW bug’s tape player and just dances. So let’s hear it for this boy. “rock ’n’ roll High School” (1979) What school would not have been improved with the Ramones? And what student, or teacher for that matter, has not considered the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated” the perfect anthem for high school? Students are determined to drive the administrators crazy, and the Ramones help by singing “Teenage Lobotomy” and proving that not every high-school musical must include a goofy ballad.

‘The Babymakers’ ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’ Filmmaker Alison Klayman chronicles artist and activist Ai Weiwei – best known for his consultant work on the Beijing National Stadium (the “Bird’s Nest”) for the 2008 Summer Olympics – as he prepares for a series of exhibitions and gets into an increasing number of clashes with the Chinese government. (R – 91 minutes) Joseph: “One could not have asked for a better subject for a documentary than Ai Wewei. The artist and activist is a compelling man whose nearly every spoken word exudes some sort of insight. Having said that, filmmaker Alison Klayman’s ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’ is – inherently – a most-mesmerizing movie. Unfortunately, it is also a movie that is a bit too broad in its scope, thereby presenting a mere

Paul Schneider plays a man who, after trying everything to get his wife (Olivia Munn) pregnant, realizes that he may be “shooting blanks.” Terrified that his marriage may fall apart, he recruits his friends – and an Indian exmobster – to rob a sperm bank where he made a deposit years ago. (R – 93 minutes) Stan: “Using a comedic approach to a ‘hush, hush’ and somewhat ‘downplayed’ aspect to the other side of the equation for a couple not being able to have children, director Jay Chandrasekhar presents the ‘male of the species’ coping with the reality and the possible solutions available for an entertaining 90 minutes, is actually quite informative underneath the humor.” Grade: C Joseph: “‘The Babymakers’ is the funniest movie about the robbery of a sperm bank that you will ever see. Than again, ‘The Babymakers’ may be the only movie about the robbery

‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days’* Zachary Gordon returns as Greg Heffley who, this time, hatches a plan to pretend he has a job at a ritzy country club – which fails to keep him away from the season’s dog days, including embarrassing mishaps at a public pool and a camping trip that goes horribly wrong. Joseph: “The thing that really makes ‘Ruby Sparks,’ for lack of a better word, sparkle is its terrific tonal fluctuations. Much like the previous motion picture directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ this romantic dramedy with a touch of the fantastic has a tendency to change moods from one minute to the next. When a movie can go from outstandingly optimistic to desperately dark without batting an eye, you know that you are in for a riveting ride.” Grade: B

(Robert De Niro) who has resurfaced years after his toughest critic mysteriously passed away. Elizabeth Olsen also stars. (R – 113 minutes) Stan: “Reminded of the popular television series ‘The X-Files’ where the theme of investigating the paranormal gave us stories from a governmental perspective, writer/director Rodrigo Cortés had a profound line delivered in his psychological thriller that provides ‘food for thought’ when the question was raised by one of the characters, what are ‘Red Lights?’ The answer: ‘Things that shouldn’t be there’, which prompts that second look at the seemingly ‘normal’ events all around us that adds ‘Para’ to normal.” Grade: C+ Joseph: “The greatest attribute of ‘Red Lights’ is the strength of its actors. Therefore, when one of said actors’ character suddenly vanishes from the story, the movie suffers an irreparable blow. That is to say that the first hour of writer/director Rodrigo Cortés’ new paranormal thriller is extremely interesting as it focuses on the rapport between the various players in this unique game of cat and mouse. However, with the exit of one of the players from the

Stan: “Reminded of a favorite 2006’s ‘Stranger Than Fiction’, imagination and perception are the key ingredients as this latest from the directing team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris easily moves between comedy, romance, and drama without missing a beat with lessons on how we see ourselves, our inner desires based on our own perceptions of an ideal companion, and the power of imagination versus reality, lingers long after the screen fades to black…” Grade: B

During the filming of the movie Red Eye (2005), in the scene in the plane bathroom, Cillian Murphy actually missed the place to throw Rachel McAdams, hits her head and was knocked unconscious for a half hour. After that she was ready for work and Murphy was afraid to do it again. a preposterous plot and cardboard characters – but it never fails to amuse its audience. Part of said amusement comes from our society’s inexplicable appreciation for B-movies (which is precisely what this is) but it also comes from the quirky cast, which includes Sean Bean, Ving Rhames, Dominic Monaghan and James Cromwell.” Grade: C

‘Ruby Sparks’ Paul Dano plays a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character (Zoe Kazan) that inspires him. However, when he finds said character in the flesh – sitting on his couch – he is completely flabbergasted. Christian Slater plays a former special forces soldier who is hired to protect a group of millionaires who want to experience firsthand the kicks and thrills of war. However, the mission goes horribly wrong and the men get a lot more than they bargained for. (R –100 minutes)

Colin Farrell plays a factory worker who begins to suspect that he is a spy after a visit to Rekall – a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led – goes wrong and he finds himself on the run. (PG13 –118 minutes)

and political system. I think that is really something we need to fight for here, too. “One night, Ai Weiwei’s room was raided and he asked one of the cameramen, ‘Did you take out your camera and film it?’ The guy responded that he did not because he was afraid that they were going to take the camera away from him. So Ai Weiwei said, ‘Then they already took it from you.’ That has stuck with me ever since.” – Alison Klayman

Filmmaker Alison Klayman (‘Ai Wei Wei: Never Sorry’) By Joseph J. Airdo “It was a 3-year project. The first year of filming, it was more of an onthe-side project because I was also working as a journalist. But so much had happened to Ai Weiwei in that first year alone that I really felt like this story had legs and I needed to dedicate myself to it. So I spent the next year filming full time and the year after that editing full time. “I think that this project has taught me that I am drawn to stories that are about tough things but ultimately show a sign of hope and possibility. I think that it also taught me about the importance of transparency as an ingredient of a functioning society

“This film is totally our sensibility, it has the right combination of real, and the opportunity to be wild and funny! You ask about my television background helping, I’ve shot so much television that I’m able to work at a lot quicker pace. We shot it in about 21 days, using the same crew, and it looks like a much bigger film although we were moving very quickly. “When we set out to make the movie, we really wanted to make sure that we really exploited this idea of manhood and the inability to make a baby and really sort of lean into that with everybody talking about it, all his friends are talking about it, his wife, his mother-in-law, father-in-law, with a lot of funny things surrounding the lost of manhood! “Women seem to really be enjoying the film. I think they’re identifying with the relationship between Paul and Olivia and how grounded it is. And so, when the comedy gets a little weird, they seem to be going with the flow. Guys seem to like the film because of the wild Broken Lizard humor and also the fact that the film

is about a loss of manhood and the awkwardness around that. Couples are digging the movie since there’s something for both people. It’s a date movie that guys and girls are both digging.”– Jay Chandrasekhar

Writer/Director Rodrigo Cortés (‘Red Lights’) By Stan Robinson

“The concept sounded fascinating to me because you have two contradictive concepts in one, you have the paranormal which is the magic that cannot be explained, and you have the hoaxes, which is basically people lying! So this allowed me to do two things by using these tools of the genre to tell a potentially compelling story in a very physical way, in a very factual way, and also with a very scientific approach to the genre. “When presenting a concept about the paranormal, you want to try to hold the viewer’s attention and you cannot use conventional structures, because you don’t want anyone who’s viewing to use an unconscious template that will allow them to anticipate what it going to happen in your story. You have to be more challenging in certain decisions. “When you try to be challenging, at a certain point, it usually scares producers because they’re looking for guarantees. But, that’s not the way actors react. Actors react in the opposite, they love contradictions, they love ambivalence, and they love ambiguity. So when you are out of the conventional, and it’s more psychological, it becomes easier to get the ‘bigger actors’ for a smaller project. I don’t know how it all happened, the actors for ‘Red Lights’ seemed to respond very, very strongly to the writing, and their characters, and I thank them so much for that, and quite frankly I’m in wonder on why they said yes!” – Rodrigo Cortés

Actor Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss (‘Step Up: Revolution’)

“We worked with Zoe for about nine months developing the script [which Zoe Kazan wrote], she did 17 drafts so she never had writer’s block. She worked hard on it, the script evolved and when it came time to shoot it, we were all very happy with where the script was and she could just focus on being an actor in the movie. As you mentioned the ‘ban the writers from the set’, which is usually the norm because you don’t want to get into a debate with writers on set, you want to focus on making the movie. Fortunately we were able to just focus on making the movie, with Zoe the actor and not the writer, and, we were given ‘final cut’ which is really great for a film project!” – Jonathan Dayton

In “Step Up: Revolution,” which opened last weekend, Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss plays one of several dancers who, when their historic neighborhood is threatened to be developed by a wealthy businessman (Peter Gallagher), turns their performance art into protest art.

By Stan Robinson

“We knew Paul [Dano] from ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ and we met Zoe, so the idea of them being the stars of it sounded really nice, that it was going to be this small movie that we thought we could make the way we wanted to make it which is always the challenge. Zoe was very comfortable saying, ‘It’s yours now, you make the film, I did my work [writing it] and you handle the film, I’ll do my part acting in it’. She was never possessive about it; she was very excited to be getting to make her film. “Nothing is really ever a ‘given’, which is somewhat ironic to say when you’re working on a film, but even then, you walk away really proud of it and really excited to see a finished product. Now we’ve done that, so now what am I going to do with the experience. That’s when it [the movie] continues to help me pave the way, rather than just sitting back but to recognize it as an accolade and that this role will hopefully be the magnet to bring things you.

“The important factor is that the experience of working in this movie is that you walk off really very proud that we handled the tough creative challenges and I’m excited to see a finished product. We’ve done that project, and I reflect on the next stage of what am I going to do with the experience and use the connections that I’ve made to continue on my path, because everybody that was involved in the film recognizes the creative expertise of the cast and crew on so many levels from dance to the drama of the story to the aspect of a ‘team’ involvement to make it happen.” – Stephen “tWitch” Boss

‘The Bourne Legacy’, which is not a re-boot, but rather a view of another operative, Adam Cross (Jeremy Renner) from the same department is presented by writer/ director Tony Gilroy. As the tagline aptly states: There Was Never Just One

“The ‘Legacy’ of Bourne Continues” By Stan Robinson There are many of us who are readers of Robert Ludlum’s novels, and are loyalists of the big screen presentations of writer/ producer/director Tony Gilroy’s vision of the Bourne world surrounded by intelligence, and counter-intelligence, in the shadowy environment of espionage. To date, the trilogy of films that has identified one operative, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), in the ‘clandestine’ department of the CIA, has earned almost $1 billion in worldwide box office grosses.

August 2nd, 2012 - August 8th, 2012

This original story introduces us to the operative whose life-ordeath exploits are put into play by the events of the previous films. There’s the familiar faces of the key personnel involved from the previous films and new persons that add to the intrigue of ‘who can one trust’ for survival in a world where there is no black or white, only shades of grey… ‘The Bourne Legacy’ ~ Directed by Tony Gilroy. Screenplay by Tony Gilroy & Dan Gilroy. Inspired by the Bourne Series created by Robert Ludlum. Starring Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Donna Murphy, Stacy, Keach, Joan Allen, Oscar Isaac, Albert Finney, David Strathairn, and Scott Glenn. Universal Pictures release (PG13 – 135 Minutes). To watch the trailers, downloads, and information on bringing ‘The Bourne Legacy’ to the screen visit http:// www.thebournelegacy.com

Talking Stick & Casino Arizona Dazzle with August Lineup YES

CON FUNK SHUN LIVE AT TALKING STICK RESORT Friday, August 3rd at 8pm

Sure, Talking Stick Resort is the home of great gaming and dining, but in recent months it has become the home of great funk! This position is solidified when the property welcomes Con Funk Shun to its Showroom on Aug. 3. With fun dance moves, crisp vocal harmonies and a contagious energy, Con Funk Shun is sure to bring the audience to its feet. Many of the group’s hit songs like “Dance with Me,” “Love’s Train” and “Fun,” are still a fixture on radio airwaves. Con Funk Shun is a six-part R&B and Funk band, often comparable to early funk pioneers like James Brown and Sly & The Family Stone. To date the band has released a total of 13 albums, four of which charted gold and one platinum. While Con Funk Shun found fame in the late 1970’s, many of their classic songs can be found on the playlists of younger generations due to heavy sampling of their music in many Hip Hop and R&B songs today. Fans young and old will not want August 2nd, 2012 - August 8th, 2012

to miss the timeless band when they come to Talking Stick Resort to perform their impressive lineup of smooth ballads and danceworthy funk hits. To purchase tickets, visit the Talking Stick Resort Box Office, call (480) 850-7734, or visit www.Ticketmaster. com. General admission tickets to Con Funk Shun are on sale now. You must be 21 years or older to attend. For more information on entertainment at Talking Stick Resort, visit www. talkingstickresort.com or call (480) 850-7734.

Q: What was it about “Go On” that told you it was “the one” for you to return to weekly television with?

A: The script, when I first read it, certainly aspired to be something different. It was funny, yet it had a lot of heartfelt moments and was quite sad at certain points. I really liked that, because that’s not your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter kind of show. Once the cast got together, it started to feel even more special, because there were just so many funny people around. (“Go On” co-stars include Julie White and John Cho.)

Q: Having been a member of one of the most popular ensemble casts in TV history, how is it to start over with a new one?

A: I had to make sure that I sort of set the tone. I was there early, I made sure people could see I was putting a lot of work into it, and I also made sure not to be selfish. Arguably, the funniest line in the pilot has to do with “March sadness,” and I was very happy that someone else got to say that. Q: Chandler on “Friends” always will be a giant calling card for you, but how do you feel your other jobs since then play into your newest one?

A: When you’re fortunate enough to play a character on a show so many people watched, it’s hard for them to get away from that ... plus, I look a lot like all these characters. The good end of that is that people sort of feel they know you, so I can get away with stuff early on in a new show. People feel they have this relationship with me before we really even start.

NBC is leading the charge into the fall television season early, and Matthew Perry is the familiar face at the front of the pack. Not surprisingly, the network is using its Summer Olympics coverage as a launching pad for its new programming lineup ... starting with its “sneak peek” of “Friends” alum Perry’s seriocomic show “Go On” Wednesday, Aug, 8. He plays a sportscaster ordered into therapy after his wife’s death, and among the moments of Chandler Binglike humor are more serious reminders of Perry’s guest turn last season on CBS’ “The Good Wife.” In tackling regular series work for the third time – following NBC’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and ABC’s “Mr. Sunshine” – in the eight years since “Friends” ended, Perry spoke with this writer recently about the task of establishing a new show (which starts its regular run Sept. 11) and character in the shadow of one of TV’s most successful comedies ever.

Doug Pike lives in Scottsdale and is a 20-year member of the National Cartoonists Society. He is the author of Gone With The Wine, The Grapes of Laugh, and the co-author, with Harry Margulies, of Less Than A Full Deck.

Think Steak.

Have you ever wanted to first-hand experience what it’s like to be a part of the ‘cycle of wine,’ literally helping to bring the grape to the glass? Well, it’s that time of year! One of the earliest to begin harvest is Charron Vineyards in Vail, just south of Tucson. Every year a gaggle of volunteers help the proprietors of Charron Vineyards harvest their crop. Although it’s a ‘down and dirty’ job, they make it as fun as possible for those who participate. Owners Susan and Milton Craig had a record turnout last year. They are asking for volunteers again this year on Saturday, August 4th and Sunday, August 5th. You’ll need to arrive very early… 6am… and you’ll work until about 1pm. Volunteers are welcome anytime! As Susan says, “Don’t miss the fun because you slept in!” They

(Or Ribs, Chicken, Seafood & Wine)

could also use some help removing the bird netting on Friday, August 3rd from 8am to Noon. Things to know: Bring a hat, sunscreen and closed toed shoes. They will provide the clippers and the vines. After each day’s harvest, Milton and Susan will provide lunch and refreshments… and some fruit of previous harvests in the form of wine in your glass. From August through October there are going to be harvest opportunities around the state. Contact your favorite Arizona winery and find out how you can help.

ITALIAN WINES By Marlene P. Baumann

Ask for these wines at finer restauarants Valley-wide www.distinctiveitalianwines.com

When we think of Italian wines, most of us have images of vibrant reds designed to go with popular and beloved Italian cuisine: spicy sauces and rich meats in pasta dishes, or sharp, flavorful cheese and salty cured meats. But what about the “Bianchi d’Italia” – the white wines of Italy? After all, the coastline of Italy runs long, bordering most of the country. With all that water nearby, Italians take an unstoppable approach to enjoying the sea. There, typical meals are dominated by seafood and paired with a variety of fine white Italian wines. It’s not just the seaside towns that showcase Italian white wines though. More traditionally, the top producers of whites were in the mountainous areas in the northeastern parts of Italy, such as Alto-Adige. Wines from those cooler areas tend to be lighter and crisper than those from the warm island climates, such as Sardinia. Most of us would be hard-pressed to name some top producers of Italian whites. Recently I needed to purchase a Pinot Grigio for a friend. I stood in the aisle and stared. Not recognizing any producers, I did the intelligent thing and chose the bottle with prettiest label! A more serious approach is to use today’s technology to browse listings of top-rated producers. There are many websites and electronic guides with this information. GamberoRosso is a fine example. No time to check it out in advance? Just describe the wine style you prefer to the wine staff and seek their guidance. Remember, whites fall into three main styles: 1) Light and Crisp, 2) Fruity and Smooth, and 3) Rich and Creamy. Another way to select a good producer of Italian wine is to look for the pink strip on the bottle – usually it is affixed around the top. The pink strip will say DOC or DOCG, which means the wine was made in accordance with the specific Italian wine production laws and regulations for that zone-- often a sign of a solid winery. Finally, I encourage you to try an Italian sparkling wine. Most of us have a “sweet” memory or two of Asti-Spumante. Today there are many lovely Italian sparklers that rival the best Champagnes. Try one for your next special occasion! AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Sweet wines are great for cocktails because they usually have a single focused flavor. The secret to creating a winning cocktail is to use mixers that will complement or highlight that predominant flavor. Here are three different cocktails, from three different wineries in the Phoenix area. The Melon-tini. It’s a refreshing drink that tastes great and cools you off quickly! It’s made with Summer Rain, a sweet apple-flavored white wine from Su Vino winery in Scottsdale. Mix one part chilled Summer Rain and one part chilled lemon-lime soda. Pour into a martini

glass and add melon balls. Cheers! The Emerald Delight. It’s made with Wine-a-Rita from Kokopelli Winery in Chandler. Wine-a-Rita has an interesting balance of citrus and pineapple flavors. Add grapefruit soda for sparkle and tartness and the result is a colorful and tasty drink! Mix two parts Wine-a-Rita to one part grapefruit soda. Pour into a chilled highball glass and add crushed ice. Garnish with citrus slices. The Poolside. This tempter uses Blackberry Merlot from Studio Vino in Tempe. Mix one part Blackberry Merlot with one part Orangina (carbonated orange beverage), and sweeten with Agave nectar. Add ice and garnish with a strawberry. Can’t decide? Try them all! Whether you’re entertaining a group of friends around the pool or just relaxing after a long day, these three tasty cocktails will be a hit! BEER! SECTION

BEER! VAN STEENBERGE BREWERY As a new, occasional feature, we are going to look at a brewery in depth. I can think of no better brewery to start with than Van Steenberge. The history of the Van Steenberge brewery dates back to at least 1784. In the Flanders region of Belgium, most people were farmers, but virtually all of them brewed beer as a secondary activity. Many of the hundreds of home brewers that Flanders had brewed beer for their own use was simply because it was safer to drink beer than water .The brewery is located in the relatively small town of Ertvelde and was founded by Jean Baptiste De Bruin. Like many others of its kind, this brewery originated from a ploughlandfarm that was also engaged in brewing beer for its own consumption. It is very likely however, that there had been a brewery long before that time but the farmer and brewer, Jean Baptist, a native of the village ‘St. KruisWinkel’ which is located not too far from the brewery, did not leave any written documents behind until 1784. Under Jean Baptiste brewing beer became amain activity and the beer was offered for sale to allow the farmers more time to work their farms instead of brewing beer

34

Gradually, brewing became the farm’s main pursuit and eventually all agricultural activities were abandoned between the two World Wars. After Jean Baptist’s death, his widow, Angelina PetronellaSchelfout, August 2nd, 2012 - August 8th, 2012

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” continued the business. From 1876 on, her nephew JozefSchelfout gave her a helping hand. The brewery was extended with a malting house and a hops field. Many inhabitants of Ertvelde, the village where the brewery is located, could long remember the two-acre field that belonged to the brewery. Upon the death of Angelina, the brewery became the property of her hard working nephew who continued to grow the business. Jozef’s daughter, Margaret married Paul Van Steenberge, professor of microbiology at the Ghent School brewery, and after the First World War the brewery came under his leadership. In 1919 he changed the name of the brewery to “BREWERY BIOS”, named after the beer that was then in production. Sadly for the brewery, his heart lay in politics and not in the brewery. He was mayor of Ertvelde and held a seat in the Senate. Although he did not spend much time in the brewery, he was a true businessman and with his background as a professor of microbiology at the technical university of Delft, where he worked with a student of Louis Pasteur, he had a solid understanding of the science behind brewing. Paul successfully launched beers such as Bios Vlaamse Bourgogne (old brown) and Leute Bock (lager). He invested in a new brewhouse, new tanks, wooden barrels and switched over to glass bottles. His business sense paired with the concerns of World War I told him that he should look to join a brewing cooperative in order to help ensure surviving the war.

Fortunately, she was able to maintain the brewery and her son quickly developed a passion for brewing. After the death of his father in 1962, Joseph Van Steenberge took charge of the brewery. He re-oriented the brewery to produce quality beers of high fermentation (top fermenting ales). He eliminated the malting and hops growing areas and began to purchase these commodities holding true to the tradition of highest quality. Yet it was not until his 64th birthday that Joseph became fully involved in the brewery. Joseph also had a long career in politics as mayor and as a senator, like his father. Around the same time, 1978 to be specific, the brewery, acquired the recipe of a beer that the Augustinian fathers in their monastery in Ghent

But it was something his wife Margaret, who had been mostly busy with raising her son Joseph who was born in 1914, could not accept. She had inherited her father’s brewery and a member of a cooperative was the same as a sale for her, “I was born as a brewer, and I will die as a brewer,” she made clear to everyone. brewed. In 1982 the brewery began production of Augustijn, a lighter table beer. Immediately this beer became an unprecedented success and became the flagship of the brewery. The brewery also created two higher ABV beers (each at 10.5%) that soon brought Van Steenberge international acclaim. Both are very unique variations on the Tripel style. Gulden Draak is a dark Tripel while Piraat contains an amount of hops that no other Belgian beer could claim at the time. Piraat is known for its trademark pirate ship on the label. The story behind Gulden Draak is the interesting one. Gulden Draak is named for the golden statue at the top of the clock tower of Ghent? The statue

was originally given to the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey) by the Norse king Sigrid Magnusson in 1111, during one of the first crusades; which explains the design of a Viking ship that the beast was given. Approximately one hundred years later, Boudewijn IX, Count of Flanders, was the Emperor of Constantinople in one of the following crusades. Because he found the statue so beautiful, he simply took it back to Flanders with him. In 1382, the cities of Bruges and Ghent even did battle for this statue. Ghent won and to this day the beautiful Golden Dragon sits atop the clock tower. The eber is rich and flavorful,

unique like no other. Try it aged for several years and see how the beer changes. In 1990, the management of the company passed over to Paul Van Steenberge, son of Joseph. There was a new, fully computer-controlled brewing room, a computer-controlled brewhouse, a water purification plant, a new bottling plant on natural gas and steam. The expected saturation of the domestic market was a major incentive for prospecting for marketing opportunities abroad. In 1998 Jef Versele, nephew of Paul Van Steenberge and now the seventh generation of the brewer’s family joined the team. Under his influence the brewery increased exports of their attractive range of top fermented beers to 60% of their business, with the main exporting countries being the USA, Netherlands and Italy. To the ambitious plans for the future to realize, in 2009 the Augustijn line was expanded by the addition of Augustijn Dark. The launch of

this new beer was successful and was followed up with Augustijn Grand Cru. The brewery continues to innovate and look for new opportunities. They were the first Belgian brewery to produce a

sampler six pack, later adding a DVD that talked about the history of the beers. They have just redesigned the sampler pack to include the Augustijn Continued on Page 36...

... continued from Page 35. line as well as Leute Bock. Expect to see Gulden Draak Black in the near future. This beer will be a blonde version of Gulden Draak and will be sold in black bottles to complement the white Gulden Draak bottles. The brewery is also experimenting with a hoppier version of Piraat and is talking about some collaborative brews with American brewers. They are also known for crafting house beers for a variety of Belgian restaurants including the famous Waterhouse in Ghent. More recently they developed a special sour beer for Monk’s Café, the well-known beer bar in Philadelphia and named it quite simply, Monk’s Café Ale. They

have also produced a beer for Papago Brewing called Oude Zuipers, which loosely translates to “Old Drunks” and have plans to produce more for other American bars. Jef Versele makes frequent trips to the United States to support his brands and is an amazing ambassador for all Belgian beer, not just his. He is legendary for his beer dinners and tasting events and is a large part of the ongoing interest in Belgian beers in America. If you have not yet met Jef or sampled his beers you owe it to yourself to do so at your earliest convenience. In fact I think it’s time for one now.

The Flagstaff Ale Trail, Yes Indeed! by King James Swann

Hello again craft beer lovers. Please allow me to regale you with a great story. It began with fifty Arizona Society of Home Brewers (ASH) members jumping on a bus bound for Flagstaff to conquer the Ale Trail. Of course during the trip there was home brew a plenty being passed from person to person and life was good. First stop, Cosmic Distribution where Susanne and Jeff took us on a tour of their brewery and began sharing their creations. My favorite was a blonde ale after hours on the bus drinking Chris’s SOPER SLAM IPA. It was here that Rob Fulmer, president of ASH shared a brilliant creation. A pint glass made of soft pliable rubber! Now we were fifty drunken home brewers bouncing unbreakable pints off the ground like basketballs in between fill ups! Next, Mother Road Brewing and the best black IPA in town. After much pint passing, Brew Master Jeff Schrag gave us a tour of the facility and spoke about future plans.LUNCH TIME! We broke into smaller groups and began wreaking havoc upon every pub in sight. All through town people were singing “GETTING SOPERED”! The Burgers and brew at Flagstaff Brewing were perfect. Acask IPA and a blue cheese burger really hit the spot. Afterwards, a short trip over the tracks took us to Lumberyard Brewing for a Gold Medal winning IPA and a tour of the brewery was nice. Cups were bouncing, people were drinking and life was fine.

Back on the bus and a short trip to Oak Creek Brewing was next. A pale ale, more food and a chat with Oak Creek beer guru Barry Tinglef was awesome. More beer and singing on the ride home plus one at Papago Brewing put an end to an amazing trip. Cheers!

“You Cheers, We All Cheers” Neighborhood bars are always fun; at times it can feel like Cheers. This is exactly that place if you come here often. They will remember your name and everyone is always friendly. I am trying to write about places that are going to be awesome for football coming up, and this is definitely one of them. Oggi’s is a place that you do not want to pass up, I promise. The summer specials are awesome: Monday through Wednesday is all day happy hour, and Wednesday to Sunday is reverse happy hour (8:30-close). Two brothers actually started this restaurant in Del Mar, and it has now become an awesome existing chain. This doctor that lives in my complex actually told me about this place and wouldn’t stop raving about it, so I had to check it out for myself. Just getting off work and want to relax with an awesome beer selection? Then you will love this pit stop! 6681 West Beardsley Rd. Glendale, AZ 85308

Over the past decade there have been a few companies that have produced technology solutions aimed at restoring sight to the blind. With well over 25 million people worldwide dealing with age related macular degeneration blindness (AMD), there is a tremendous need for a solution. However, the resolution produced by existing solutions has only been around 10x10 pixels, which from the

image below (1) you can tell is fairly useless. Now, a company called Nano-Retina has recently disclosed its Bio-Retina implant product as a solution to combat AMD blindness and it is expected to be able to produce images of 72x72 pixels (2), which is good enough to read and watch television.

that make contact with, and actually integrate with, the optic nerve to transfer the images it receives to the patient’s brain; much like the original undamaged retina. This solution really breaks the traditional mold by its non-invasive power system. Power is delivered to the implant by an ultra-low power infrared beam that is projected from a pair of rechargeable glasses, through the eye, to the implant. Since there are no batteries to connect to the implant and no wires to try to run from your eye to the power source, the implant can be installed in about 30 minutes with a simple procedure. This is a drastic improvement from the previous technologies 4-hour surgery that involved and antenna and other things I personally would not want in my head. Clinical trials are expected to begin in early 2013 and public availability should not be far away. I only hope

Rock icons KISS and Motley Crue will share the stage at Ashley Furnture HomeStore Pavilion in Phoenix (2121 N 83rd Ave.) on Friday August 10th. These veterans of the music business are still at the height of their popularity. KISS is the juggernaut of them all, with 3,000 licensed merchandise products, including the KISS golf course in Las Vegas and a new album. KISS has broken box office records set by The Beatles and Elvis. Motley Crue is the first rock band in history to have just completed an epic sold-out Las Vegas residency at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The band is best known for continuing to reinvent not only their live show (with mind blowing elements such as Tommy Lee’s 360 drum roller coaster) and music (brand new song due out this spring), but remain on the cutting edge via social media interaction. Motley Crue’s New York Times bestselling book The Dirt is currently being adapted into a major motion picture. Last month, the band was featured in one of the highest rated Super Bowl ads of all time for the KIA Optima. Check out www.motley.com, www.kissonline. com or www.livenation.com for more information.

Nicki Minaj’s second studio album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded was released in April and hit #1 on the Billboard 200 list in the US. Minaj brings her sold-out show to Phoenix on Friday, August 7th when she performs at Comerica Theatre (400 W. Washington St.). Nicki will also be bringing back her infamous VIP Meet and Greets on this upcoming US Tour. Fans will have the opportunity to get an exclusive VIP laminate and lithograph, access to be the first to enter the venue night of show and a meet-and-greet with Nicki herself. During each meet-and-greet, Minaj will sign autographs and take photos with fans. Fans can purchase this exclusive VIP package by going to www.mypinkfriday. com. Visit www.livenation.com for tickets.

LIVE! SECTION 54

Grown & Sexy’s BLACKstreet & Ginuwine Saturday, August 4th at Celebrity Theatre Grown & Sexy’s BLACKstreet and Ginuwine are set to perform live at the intimate Celebrity Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 4th. Tickets are still available! With Chauncey “Black” Hannibal, legendary producer and swingbeat creator Teddy “Street” Riley and Dave Hollister back in the saddle, you’ve got the real BLACKstreet, no diggity, no doubt! For over 15 years, they were part of a four-man group that is notorious for doing the dance move “The Lean.” Brandishing an electrifying mix of soul, funk, hip-hop and gospel, BLACKstreet delivered its self-titled debut album in the summer of 1994. The disc was certified platinum, rose to #7 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and spawned three hit singles: “Before I Let You Go” (Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100), “Joy” (#8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay list) and “Booti Call” (Top 20 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay). These, combined with MTV and BET airplay and a thriving tour, established BLACKstreet as one of the most promising outfits on the R&B landscape. BLACKstreet’s pop breakthrough came in 1996 with Another Level. More specifically, it was the inescapable smash single “No Diggity,” which featured special guest Dr. Dre that put them over the top. “No Diggity” reigned for four weeks on top of the pop charts and won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal by a Duo or Group; it also pushed sales of Another Level past the four million mark. Singer-songwriter, dancer and actor Ginuwine released a number of multi-platinum and platinum-selling albums and singles during the ‘90s heyday of hip-hop soul. His first album Ginuwine...the Bachelor reached double platinum status thanks to the No. 1 R&B single “Pony.” The Life (2001) featured Ginuwine’s biggest hit single: “Differences” spent four weeks at the top of the R&B chart, and reached No.4 on the Hot 100. Last year, Ginuwine released his seventh studio album titled, Elgin, after his given name. His film career includes a role as R&B singer “Romeo” in the film Juwanna Mann. He also co-starred in the Gospel Music Channel’s debut of John Ruffin’s stage play The Ideal Husband and can be spotted in a Jodeci video. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. $34 for General Admission; $43 and $56 for Reserved Seating. Tickets are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. August 2nd, 2012 - August 8th, 2012

Deadlight

XBLA/1,200 Microsoft Points/Available Now If the zombie apocalypse were to hit tomorrow, what would you do? Rather than taking the route of the average video game protagonist, wading into the shambling horde with guns ablaze, I would imagine that most of your time would be spent hiding and avoiding death as you search for loved ones. That’s exactly what Randall Wayne is hoping to do as Seattle finds itself engulfed in the walking dead in Tequila Works’ gorgeous action/platformer “Deadlight.” At first glance, the game appears to be crafted with all the tender loving care of a top-tier blockbuster, thanks to beautifully rendered environments and solid character animations. Gameplay revolves around Wayne’s survival as he makes his way through the city, and since he is happier running from zombies than fighting them in close-quarters combat, you’ll find yourself either fleeing or creating elaborate traps for the undead to wander into. With so many zombie games on the market concentrating on bullets and brawn, it’s refreshing to see a game that puts a realistic spin on what would happen if the situation were to occur.

the Judge! In the next few issues of RUSH, we’ll take a closer look at ten of the most dangerous stunts ever successfully performed in the history of mankind by the bravest and most daring of men. Or perhaps, individuals missing a chromosome or two, with too much time on their hands. We’ll leave that up to you. One must ask themselves

R

however, if the tables were turned, would you have the “marbles” to set out to conquer any one of these death-defying, hairstanding, jaw-dropping feats? #4 David Smith Jr. - Human Cannonball A legend in his own right, David Smith Jr. aka the Human Cannonball has been fired out of a cannon over 500 times. Such

appeal is there to see the original Human Cannonball (who also answers to the nickname “The Bullet”) get fired out of the huge cannon, the stuntman has taken this act around the world. He is officially the highest flying human cannonball in the world right now, but like Houdini, he’s not short of his imitators.
