CITY! SECTION

By John Crook

Ryan Murphy helped bring back musicals with his freakand-geek-tastic Fox series “Glee,” and his “American Horror Story” simultaneously scared the wits out of its viewers while making sly observations about the nuclear family at its core. But “The New Normal,” the NBC Tuesday comedy premiering Sept. 11, may be Murphy’s most surprising and subversive series yet, finding humor and heart in a decidedly shopworn premise: a couple pursuing their dream of becoming parents. The couple in question here is gay: Bryan (Andrew Rannells, Broadway’s “The Book of Mormon”), a successful

television producer, and David (Justin Bartha, Nicolas Cage’s sidekick from the “National Treasure” movies), a sweet-natured gynecologist. Happily in a stable and committed relationship, they desperately want a child to share their lives but become disheartened by the obstacles they face. Enter Goldie (Scottish newcomer Georgia King), a waitress who has fled a dead-end marriage in Ohio to make a fresh start in California with her precocious 8-year-old daughter, Shania (Bebe Wood), with Goldie’s conservative and bigoted grandmother (Ellen Barkin) in hot pursuit.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Desperate and broke, with few immediate career prospects, Goldie sees the hefty financial bonus Bryan and David are offering their surrogate as her ticket to a new life. Even before the show has premiered, it already has drawn the ire of one conservative group that has called for a boycott, sight unseen. Bartha says he’s aware of that development, but he hopes people will watch the show and discover that it really isn’t overtly political. “We are aware that it’s something that will be looked at, but it’s also an issue that is, in my opinion, well past its expiration date,” Bartha says. “I just think it’s ridiculous that this still an issue, and if you kept addressing that, it would become overbearing. It’s about how everyone relates to each other and how hard it is to have a family, and that also has to do with straight people, white people, black people, old people, young people, everything. “This show really is, first and foremost, a show about family, just as ‘All in the Family’ was. The fact that the central characters are gay is not the talking point of every single scene, which is one of the things I love most about the show. It’s just another characteristic of these people.” Murphy, who like Rannells is openly gay, created the semiautobiographical show with Rannells in mind to play Bryan (read: Ryan), but Bartha was quick to get on board after he read the pilot script. “I thought it was great and seemed important in a weird way, so I wanted to be involved,” he says. “When I do watch television, a lot of the things I see while I am flipping around look disposable, whether it’s scripted or unscripted. The cast that we have assembled – and I am not talking about myself here – are all just indelible in the way they are creating lovable and representative characters.”

Henry Cavill plays a man whose whole world turns upside down when his family is kidnapped by intelligence agents hell-bent on recovering a mysterious briefcase while on a weeklong sailing vacation in Spain. (PG-13 – 93 minutes)

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Branded’*

‘Bachelorette’ Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher play three frisky bridesmaids who, on the night before an old friend’s (Rebel Wilson) wedding, go searching for a little fun but find much more than they bargained for. (R – 91 minutes)

Ed Stoppard plays a man in a surreal, dystopian near future – where corporate brands have unleashed a global conspiracy to keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive – who tries to take back control, uncover the truth behind the conspiracy and stop it from destroying our world. (R – 106 minutes) *Not made available for review.

Dreama Walker plays a counter girl at a fast-food restaurant who, after being accused of stealing money from a customer’s purse by a caller who identifies himself as a police officer, is detained and strip-searched by her boss (Ann Dowd). (R – 90 minutes)

Joseph: “Although it can quite accurately be called ‘Bridesmaids’light, ‘Bachelorette’ is a rather enjoyable comedy. The strength of writer/director Leslye Headland’s first feature-length film, which she adapted from her own stage play, is that it allows humor to come naturally out of the process of exploring its three characters’ personalities rather than by force. As a result, the entire experience – from the emotions to the laughs – feels much more authentic.” Grade: C

‘The Cold Light of Day’*

‘Compliance’

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Joseph: “‘Compliance’ is a deeply disturbing motion picture that will leave you both emotionally and intellectually shaken. Everything about writer/director Craig Zobel’s new drama, from its powerful performances to its purposeful pace, constitutes an extremely unsettling experience. However, the thing that makes the movie most frightening is that it is based on true events. If this is not the stuff of nightmares, then nothing is.” Grade: A

Anne Naylon and star Lauren Miller – happens to be not only one of the funniest female-centric films in recent memory but also one of the most emotionally rewarding.” Grade: B

‘Little White Lies’* A near-fatal accident leaves one friend in the hospital while the rest go on their annual vacation. But their secrets and personal grief threaten to drive them apart. (NR – 154 minutes) *Not reviewed.

‘For a Good Time, Call...’

Joseph: “Seeing as it resembles both ‘2 Broke Girls’ and ‘Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23,’ you could quite accurately say that ‘For a Good Time, Call...’ is somewhat sitcomish. That is not necessarily a negative thing, though. In fact, the new comedy – which was directed by Jamie Travis and written by Katie

Joseph: “‘The Words’ could have been a decent motion picture had it only remained in the present. Writers/directors Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal’s debut drama is dragged down with its incorporation of multiple layers – one of which occupies the movie’s entire second act and threatens to put viewers to sleep with its wispy recount of the past and another that makes it difficult to develop any emotional connection to the characters whatsoever.” Grade: D

Soundbite Spotlight

Lauren Miller plays a young woman who, after reluctantly moving in with an enemy from her past (Ari Graynor), discovers that her new roommate is working as a phone-sex operator and decides to sign on as her business partner. (R – 86 minutes) Stan: “I’m guessing most men will fall into the category of ‘terribly embarrassed’ as the over-the-top [or are they!] situations presented on just when men will engage in phone sex, which is, in short, anytime. ‘For a Good Time, Call...’ certainly earns its ‘R’ rating as no situation is off limits, ‘R’ rated dialogue abounds, and the opposites paring of Lauren Miller and Ari Graynor who come together for the common goal of reaping the rewards of men’s excessive sexual behavior is quite an experience.” Grade: B

‘The Words’ Bradley Cooper plays a young writer who finally achieves long sought after literary success after publishing the next great American novel. As the past comes back to haunt him and his literary star continues to rise, he is forced to confront the steep price that must be paid for stealing another man’s work. (PG-13 – 96 minutes) Stan: “’Cerebral’ is the key word that comes to mind as the subject of plagiarism in literary works is addressed on a multitude of levels from the usual criminal aspect to the emotionally wrongful side. Jeremy Irons is mesmerizing as the wronged author of the misappropriated work

September 6th, 2012 - September 12th, 2012

I have played a lot of characters that are very different than this in movies like ‘Conviction,’ ‘Holy Rollers’ and ‘American Crime.’ Those could not be more dissimilar from this. But even in those characters there are parts of myself. I think that Katie taps into a bravado or confidence of mine that is masking vulnerability. “I take every job for different reasons. Mostly I take something because it is great material – a really smart story with people that I want to work with. But sometimes it is because it is a character that leaps off of the page at me and feels fresh or new. I like to be able to say that a character has personality, depth and a world that can be created. That is rare, though, because there is a lot of schlock out there with thinly written characters “The first question I ask myself is, ‘Is there something here for me to do?’ When I got [‘For a Good Time, Call...’], not only was the script as a whole so smart, funny, fresh and unique, but I liked these two female characters that reminded me of some of the ones in 80’s movies that we all loved watching. They had character. They had depth. They had personality. And they were surprising. I think that is the most exciting thing when characters can be surprising.” – Ari Graynor

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Co-Writer/Director Eduardo Sánchez (‘Lovely Molly’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Lovely Molly,” which was co-written and directed by “The Blair Witch Project’s” Eduardo Sánchez,Gretchen Lodge plays a newlywed who returns to her long-abandoned family home and becomes bombarded by reminders of a nightmarish childhood and, eventually, a malevolent force. “My writing partner Jamie Nash came up with this idea about somebody videotaping themselves going through a possession. I thought that it was a great idea but I did not want to make a found footage movie. I felt that Molly deserved more of a conventional approach. I definitely wanted to make it scary but, at the same time, I did not want to have to justify her having a video camera everywhere she went. So I decided to mix the two styles. It was kind of an experiment and I am pretty happy with the results. That is one of the exciting things about being an independent filmmaker. You always get to take these little risks that sometimes pay off.” – Eduardo Sánchez

Actress Cloris Leachman dots ‘Oogieloves’ with fun By Joseph J. Airdo Actress Cloris Leachman – who is one of several stars who have cameo appearances in “The Oogieloves in The Big Balloon Adventure,” which opened last week – is not shy about revealing the real reason she took a part in the new family flick. “The money,” Leachman joked during a recent interview with AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine. “No, really, you just read something and think that it is nice and that the people are nice so you see if you can work it out. And then you do.” Leachman plays a woman named Dotty Rounder who lives, sleeps and breathes polka dots. Although the actress admits that she likes polka dots, she is nowhere near the fanatic about them that her character is. However, it was still easy for her to get into Dotty’s head.

In the movie ‘Field of Dreams’ (1989) Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are among the thousands of extras in the Fenway Park scene. Over a decade later when Phil Alden Robinson worked with Affleck on ‘The Sum of All Fears (2002) Affleck said ‘Nice working with you again’!

do that,” Leachman explained. “You read the part, see where the character is going or what the writer is trying to accomplish and just start doing it while trying to make it as interesting as you can for the audience.” Leachman added that her technique when acting opposite an Oogielove is the same as it would be when acting opposite a normal-appearing human being. However, she noted that “The Oogieloves in The Big Balloon Adventure” is quite a unique experience for audiences. “I saw a spot on television and thought, ‘This is no way to see it,’” said Leachman, explaining that the movie is much more interactive than most. “You need to see it on the big screen where you can do what the movie invites you to do with everyone else.”

Special Feature

‘The Truth is Out There’, Part 10’ By Stan Robinson As the series draws to a close with this last installment, the ‘debunking’ of the article ‘Readers Digest: 13 Things a Movie Theater Employee Won’t Tell You’ by Ilana Strauss; I extend a hearty ‘Thank you’ to Brian Deveny, theater owner (since 1975) and Chairmen of the Arizona Theater Owners Association and David Ramsey, movie critic (since 1994) and President of the Phoenix Film Critics Society for sharing their insight on the article’s points of contention. Here’s the last item.

13. Popcorn keeps for a day or two. Many customers confuse warm with fresh. Brian: “That’s completely false! I’m charging a premium price, and I’ve better have a premium product. I can only speak for myself, I buy the most expensive popcorn on the market and I buy the most expensive oils to pop the popcorn in because those customers are paying a premium price for that popcorn, for that soda, for what ever I have control over, its going to be the premium product! I hate walking into theaters and seeing these off brands of candy, or off brand of soda. A lot of businesses are using Styrofoam cups with the reason that your drink stays cooler or the ice doesn’t melt as fast. A lot of people don’t know that if you put a carbonated beverage into Styrofoam, that carbonation leaks right through to the air and what you’re left with is a big giant flat soda. And besides that, Styrofoam is really bad for the environment as well!” David: “Another complete lie. Theatre owners and managers have more respect for themselves and their customers. Every wonder why theatres don’t have popcorn ready when you get there for an early morning screening? Because they make it fresh, it’s also why at the end of the night they don’t have it piled high. Stale popcorn corn does not taste the same, anyone can tell the difference. And they risk health code violations not to mention the buttery stuff they use could likely be rancid the second day causing illness and lawsuits. Of course, there could be one or two managers cutting corners here and there but they are very few and far between. Whoever this guy is he appears to be trying to keep people away from movie theatres maybe he works for a premium TV channel or DVD rental company.”

sometimes as many 8 movies in a 5 day period, needless to say that equals a lot of popcorn eating. I even notice the difference if the popcorn may have been out for an hour so how ridiculous is this statement? Very! I seriously doubt if any manager would risk such high stakes to sell a few extra bags of popcorn. Whomever this person is, they should definitely be shown the door with a ‘pink slip’ in their hands for spreading false allegations as a source for the ‘13 Things a Movie Theater Employee

“The Iron Lady” (2011): The moment Streep’s casting as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher became known, “Oscar win” was the immediate thought. And that’s just how it turned out. “It’s Complicated” (2009): A totally winning Streep plays a divorcee whose heart is torn between her ex-husband and a sincere architect (Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin). “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995): Streep and director and co-star Clint Eastwood prove an ideal match in the adaptation of Robert James Waller’s melancholy love story. “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979): Streep earned a supporting Oscar as a quietly desperate wife and mother gone AWOL.

Phoenix City Grill (5816 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, 602-266-3011) has been a local favorite of mine for over 10 years. Owner, Sheldon Knapp is passionate about food, local, Arizona and embodies the small business owner that takes care and pride in everything about his restaurant, and it shows.

A long well appointed bar, generously spaced tables and intimate hi-back booths provide a comfortable dining space perfect for a business lunch, happy hour, family dinners, or Sunday brunch. Salads or pasta, enchiladas or burgers, over the years everything on the menu has remained consistently delicious; although I must note that I am partial to the crab cakes. Great food, impeccable service, and passion make the experience at

Phoenix City Grille more than simply satisfying. It creates anticipation for your return. This is exactly the kind of place that sets local dining apart from larger chain and franchises. Wines for Barbeques Authentic. Fresh. Local.

30 Wines for $30 Barbeque is all about going overboard. Fat, muscle, and lots— and lots—of sauce: if there is a more American food, I don’t know what it is. It’s the perfect election season grub, so you’ll want the perfect wine to wash it down. And unlike politicians, if you don’t like the one you choose first, you can just go out and get yourself a new one…today. So, when heading to the market to stock up for the next get-together, here are some shopping tips for pairing with barbeque: ●● BBQ Chicken has a cornucopia of textures while remaining fairly onedimensional in flavor. I say, add another texture and get a sparkling white wine. The BBQ sauce will provide the flavor while the acidity and bubbles from the wine will quench and add to the mouthfeel. ●● BBQ Pork Shoulder is loaded with tasty fats. And one way to cut through fat—with wine and food in general—is to pair with a high acid wine. Accent the pork’s flavor and

Mon-Sat 11 am to Midnight, Sunday 10-2 brunch, 2 to Midnight.

cut the fat with an Albariño. This tropical fruit-forward wine will crank the BBQ flavors up to an 11; this is a sure way to woo at your next barbeque.

4221 North 7th Ave, (602) 234-0333

●● Beef Brisket—one of my all-time favorites—is usually prepared with some mustard-based rub. At least that’s how it’s done in North Carolina. The mustard can create a gamey impression, so go with wines that pair well with game meats: Petit Sirah or a Bordeaux blend (either an actual Bordeaux or a Meritage). When in doubt, though, you cannot go wrong with a thick, jammy Syrah or Zinfandel. You’ll be prying friends and loved ones off of the ground, rousing them from diabetic comas of joy and satisfaction, especially if you get your hands on a bottle of Javelina Leap Estate Zinfandel. Ask for these wines at finer restauarants Valley-wide www.distinctiveitalianwines.com

I thought I would lighten things up a bit this week, especially since word came down from someone important (thanks, mom), not to get too technical. What lighter topic than a column on famous people in the wine business? We know them first for their main identity: rock star, actor, celebrity chef, sports legend. Then we learn they love their wine – and by saying “their” I really mean their own wine. I’m sure you’ve heard of Francis Ford Coppola’s wine estate – now producing more than 40 wines and offering smoothie tastings for the kids. On the other hand, maybe you missed the Martha Stewart value wines sold at K-Mart in 2007. The famous in this world lend their names to products on a grand scale. And owning a vineyard or having your own wine label has emerged as a popular choice. Mr. Coppola – you have company! Rock stars with wineries: Sting has a beautiful vineyard in Tuscany. Add to the list Santana, Mick Fleetwood, even Boz Skaggs…and not to be left out, the material girl herself, Madonna with a vineyard in Leelanau Peninsula, MI. Professional Athletes – wow, the list is long including Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, and Mike Ditka. Just sticking to golfers, there are several known for their game and also for their wine: Nick Faldo with a place in the Coonawarra, Greg Norman in both Australia and California; also Ernie Els with a spot in South Africa. More famous for winning a Masters than for his winery, Mike Weir is a wine enthusiast growing grapes of all places on the Niagara Peninsula. I can’t leave out one of my favorite golfers – Luke Donald, who has created his own label.

7131 WEST RAY ROAD SUITE 45 CHANDLER, AZ 85226

What is the motivation? Some might simply say: Ego. But let’s not get cynical – it might be a way to pursue one of their passions in a very personal way. Or a vineyard estate is clearly a nice place to live. For others, it’s a chance to be in a fun business and satisfy their urge to “make” something tangible. In their careers as great singers, quarterbacks, golfers, and actors it’s all about performing, not making. Either way, I find it striking to see all these famous names on wine labels and I feel I learn something about them whenever I try one of their wines. So, pick your favorite celebrity wine and enjoy!

TASTING BLIND… Getting to know your palate… By Arizona Vines & Wines The only way to really get to know wine is to taste it blind. And therefore, the only way to truly know

your palate is to taste a wine without any knowledge of its label, origin or cost.

or whites, but most wine enthusiasts also find that their palates change over time.

The first way to get to know your palate, of course, is to taste a lot of wine, a lot of different wines. Really let the liquid linger over in your mouth and ask yourself, “What do I like about this wine… and what don’t I like about this wine.” Are you a fan of tannins or fruit? Do you like spice or earth? Do you like citrus notes or vanilla? There is no wrong answer. You may even like all of the above. What you’ll find, though, is that most people have a tendency toward certain flavors and body styles of wine, maybe even strictly only reds

Once you think you know your palate inside and out, now it’s time to do a blind tasting. One of the best ways to do so is to invite your friends over, have them bring a wine wrapped in foil or a paper bag and taste, taste, taste. Or if you’re lucky, find and attend an event where they are pouring wines blind (Arizona Wine Experience at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch, is one). What you find may surprise you. we blindly tasted eight rosés against each other, I learned a lot. There were four Arizona wines paired against four that were selected as industry benchmarks for rosé (for their region). I was certain that I would spot the Arizona wines out of the bunch, as the publisher of an Arizona wine magazine and a consummate consumer of Arizona wine. I made my choices of the wines I liked the best and then waited for the results. I found out that when I tasted the Caduceus Lei Li Rosé (which took top place with the professional judges), I thought it was too acidic and tasted too much like Sauvignon Blanc. I LOVE THE LEI LI! I’ve had it on multiple occasions and loved it every time! The wine I thought was Sand-Reckoner from southern Arizona (one of my all-time favorite rosés), turned out to be a Spanish wine that retails for $10. What I took away from this experience is that I have a lot to learn. It doesn’t mean that all of a sudden I don’t like those wines that I liked before; it just means that I’ll be paying a lot more attention to the nuances that make them unique, not let price or region cloud my judgment.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 9/6

By Josh Moffitt, www. ArizonaLandBaron.com Willcox, Arizona used to be known for apples; these days it is known for wine. As such it is fitting that the massive, abandoned apple warehouse you see from the interstate has been converted into a massive, custom crush winery facility to process the local grapes into wine. When Scott and Joan Dahmer moved to Arizona from Healdsburg, California, they thought they were leaving behind “wine country” and any dreams of having their own vineyard and winery. Then they discovered that there was an emerging wine industry right here in Arizona. They realized that they could join in with the pioneers of this growing industry and created Aridus Wine Company. When it came to designing the vineyard and winery, they looked back to where they came from and hired fourth generation Napa Valley winemaker and consultant, Cary Gott. Cary flew out to visit the site and met the other local winemakers and tasted their wine. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the local wine and seeing the potential, Cary suggested that they not just build a winery

for themselves but build a much larger custom crush winery facility that would offer the state of the art equipment to other winemakers from the area, as well. This would afford them an additional revenue stream for equipment that would be a required investment for their own winery anyway. This is a big deal for Willcox and the Arizona wine industry to have a world-class winemaking facility with all the state-of-the-art equipment. Anyone with a desire to get started in the wine industry can now do so without having to pony up all the startup capital. They can buy grapes and make wine or they can plant vines to grow their own grapes and take them to the conveniently located crush facility to make the wine.

By Jeff Cagan

The 4th annual Bucky’s Casino Northern Arizona Texas Hold’em Championships was held during July this year and just like previous years it was a tough fought battle from the start. Unlike last year when it took almost 2 hours for the first player to be eliminated, this year the championship contenders started dropping in the first hour, including one final table winner from 2011. With 40 players making the final day of action and a $16,600 prize pool to play for, play got very intense at times at on of Arizona’s top tournaments each year. All final day players started the day with $10,000 in chips and a hope of capturing the $6,600 first place prize. From the very beginning Ryan Robinson took control of the chip lead on table 4 as he was responsible for the tournament’s first casualty within the first 15 minutes of play. Queens were the story on table 2 as Rich Cagan won multiple hands with the ladies on his side to help boost him into the top 3 in chips in the first 90 minutes. After 90 minutes the field was down to 36 players, but the blinds were still only

$200/$400, so there was still a lot of time and chips to play with. Table 1 saw rock solid Russ Boutin play solidly throughout, methodically building his chip stack into a force to be reckoned with. After the second break and around 4 hours into the tournament Ryan Robinson continued to amass a fortune of chips and continued to pound away at the short stacks at his table, consistently forcing players into all in decisions they did not want to be in. With only 19 players left Ryan remained chip leader, still playing on table 4, with Cecil Penny and 2011 top 10 finisher William Rice playing well on the same table. Table 1 was now very strong with eventual top 10 finishers in almost every seat. With 11 players remaining Mona Otto was eliminated making room for the top 10 to claim their guaranteed prize pool cash. At about the 5 hour mark William Rice was sent packing with a 10th place finish, his 2nd top 10 finish in the last 3 years. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy King met his demise, taking 9th place home with him and the respect of the other players as the only player to finish in the top 10 in 2011 and 2012. Play continued for the next 20 minutes, with the talk of a chop popping up throughout. Finally, after about 5 hours of

play the final 8 players agreed to chop the remaining prize pool, weighted toward their chip stacks at the time, with Ryan Robinson having a solid hold on the chip lead and taking the top spot after leading almost the entire day. 1st – Ryan Robinson $5,702 6th – Jan “JP” Paderewski $1,200 2nd – Russ Boutin $2,500 7th – Marc Galeano $1,000 3rd – Rich Cagan $2,300 8th – Brandon Calkins $1,000 4th – Lowell Johnson $1,200 9th – Jimmy King $332 5th – Cecil Penny $1,200 10th-William Rice $166 Bucky’s Poker Room would like to thank all the participants in this year’s tournament and look forward to next year with an even bigger and better tournament. With the lowest rake in the State, Hold’em and Omaha Hi/Lo play, plus promotions running 24/7 Bucky’s Poker Room is a great place to stop in at, enjoy the Prescott weather and have some fun playing poker anytime. But…Let’s not forget about the blackjack pit – with the BEST BLACKJACK AROUND!

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Bucky’s “Road to Riches” Blackjack The Bucky’s Casino “Road to Riches” Blackjack promotion is held Sunday – Thursday between 8am-10am, 4pm-6pm and 10pm-Midnight. During these times all Gold Rush Club player card members can win bonus money each time they get a suited blackjack. Players that receive a suited blackjack will receive a Road to Riches scratcher card. Every card is a potential winner of 10x the original blackjack main bet. Players scratch one of four spots in the first section of road to see if they win 1x their bet. If they do not get a 1x and get a “sorry” the game is over. If they do get a 1x, they then move on to the next section of road where they scratch off one of the four sections to attempt to win 2x their bet. The new NBC series “Go On,” starring Matthew Perry as sportscaster Ryan King, gives costume designer Nancy Gould a main character with many layers that she helps reveal through the clothes she selects. “There is a lot of room for distinction between the sports world and therapy world,” Gould says. “(Ryan) is confident and smart and successful on this radio show, so he dresses well in sports coats, suits and dress shirts by Hugo Boss, John Varvatos and Paul Smith. In his casual life, he wears a lot of Vince and Theory. He dresses up at work because he is on camera all the time. Sometime a tie when he’s doing the show and jeans underneath since you wouldn’t see them anyway.”

Repeal Day

January 16th, 1919 was the beginning of a dark period in American history that started with the ratification of the 18th Amendment and didn’t end for thirteen years with the ratification of the 21st Amendment on December 5th, 1933. This era became known as Prohibition and saw the outlawing of all alcoholic beverages in the United States. Since we just celebrated what has become known as Repeal Day, let’s examine that time a little more closely.

The 18th Amendment is the only Constitutional Amendment to ever be repealed and it signified the end of what was called The Noble Experiment by supporters of Prohibition. In reality it was harmful to the country and served to provide numerous opportunities for organized crime to gain footholds as well as creating a general unhappiness with the Federal Government. The proponents of prohibition had believed that banning alcoholic beverages would reduce or even eliminate many social problems, particularly drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty. In 1925, journalist H.L. Mencken believed the opposite to be true:

When where you live inspires what you do, we call that living life Alaskan.

Five years of Prohibition have had, at least, this one benign effect: they have completely disposed of all the favorite arguments of the Prohibitionists. None of the great boons and usufructs that were to follow the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment has come to pass. There is not less drunkenness in the Republic, but more. There is not less crime, but more. There is not less insanity, but more. The cost of government is not smaller, but vastly greater. Respect for law has not increased, but diminished.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

And while Prohibition may not have been responsible for The Great Depression, it certainly played its part in making the Depression worse. Between costs of enforcement and lost tax revenue it is estimated that Prohibition cost the country around a billion dollars during the period from the late 1920’s until Repeal. Money that could have helped drastically with needed services during that time. The entire thirteen years of Prohibition cost the United States about $11,000,000,000 dollars in lost tax revenue and another $400,000,000 in enforcement costs. The chaos created by Prohibition and the overwhelming desire of the American public to consume adult beverages made the time ripe for the incredible growth of organized crime. Serving as retail distribution channels and, in many cases production as well, cities were almost taken over by organized crime groups. But it was not all the mob’s doing, most of the production and trafficking was still done by ordinary citizens looking to make money and provide a service for their fellow Americans. Much of it was also done by Canadian interests. Production of spirits, wine and beer was still legal in Canada and a quick bootlegging run across the border could net these companies a nice profit. Prohibition brought us many terms used today. For instance, the term speakeasy is said to come from bartenders telling patrons to “speak easy” when ordering so as not to be overheard some 30 years before prohibition. While the speakeasy was often funded by organized crime and could be very elaborate and upscale, the “blind pig” was a dive for the less desirable drinker. It should be noted that one of Russian River Brewing’s flagship brands is Blind Pig IPA. The term “The Real McCoy” also came out of this era. It’s attributed to Captain

United States. On December 5th, 1933 the 21st Amendment was accepted by the state of Utah, a state not normally thought of as being particularly supportive of alcohol, and with that vote the required 75% of states required for ratification was reached and the Amendment became law. However prior to that the CullenHarrison act was signed into law by President Roosevelt. This act allowed for production and sale of beer of no more than 3.2% alcohol by weight (4.0% if using the more common alcohol by volume measurement)

BEER! SECTION NIMBUS AMERICAN BISTRO and beer returned to the country in April of 1933. Interesting fact... The first legal bottle of beer produced by Washington’s Abner Drury Brewery was delivered to President Roosevelt at the White House shortly after midnight on April 14, 1933 and stored in the President’s pantry because he was still asleep. Here are some other interesting facts about Prohibition and its repeal. Dewar’s Scotch - the first legal whisky to arrive in the U.S. - hit New York’s South Street Seaport docks the moment the law was put into action. Joseph Kennedy, Sr. (JFK’s father) happened to be the US agent for the brand. Now, a lot of people have suggested that Joseph Kennedy was a bootlegger, which he may or may not have been. But what he really was, was the owner of a company named Somerset Importers. Somerset owned the exclusive rights to import Dewar’s Scotch and Gordon’s Gin, and right before Repeal, Somerset stocked

up. Once Prohibition was over, they sold the premium liquors for a hefty profit, and Joe was a rich man. The umbrella becomes a clever symbol of the post-prohibition era. Ironically with rain inside the umbrella for many wet days to come. To honor the repeal of the 21st amendment many celebration begin at 9:00pm or the 21st hour. Finally, many Repeal Day hosts insist the first drink of the evening be non-alcoholic beverage to remind everyone of the dry days of prohibition. So, this story may have hit your hands a little late for this year, but next year will be coming up soon, so take a few minutes to remember that the repeal of Prohibition was one of the best examples of the system that is the government of The United States of America working properly and protecting the constitutional rights of the citizens. Host your own party next year, or better yet, it’s not too late to toast the repeal this year.

BLACK BUTTE XXIV, Beer Is The New Wine!

Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s get back to beer and chat about Black Butte XXIV. Made to mark the twenty fourth anniversary of Black Butte Porter, this once a year Imperial edition is ripe with intricate flavour and passion. Cracking open the waxed top bottle you immediately notice the aroma. Sweet figs, molasses, chocolate and raisins dominate the nose and become even stronger as you pour this elixir into a glass. Speaking of the pour, this beer rolls slowly out of the the bottle almost opaque with a slight hint of dark crimson colour and a thick tan head. As you take that all important first sip the nose comes good on your palate with the perfect modicum of hop character for balance. Whoa! Let me be the first to say that this beer is hot! I can taste every bit of the 11% ABV. this brew claims to have. In all fairness there are strict instructions on the label asking that you Do Not open it until late Two Thousand Thirteen. I can see why. This is a beer for aging, no not aging, cellaring. Buy two or three of these babies and have one now, have one next year and then put one away for the next decade. The level of complexity contained in this bottle is simply astounding. Time will only make it more profound.

“nothing like a cheers bar” Doc and Eddies bar in Tempe has been a local favorite in, but I was just introduced to it. Most people there know eachother and the bartender is a sassy kind of guy, it’s really fun. They have happy hour daily from 11am7pm with awesome specials. $2 domestic pints and drafts, 2.50 well and wine, 2.50 16oz cans of PBR, and all day pool tables with the purchase of an entree on Sundays!! The food specials change daily, but they do have some killer french fries and chicken tenders. With two PBRS and my entree, my bill was just over ten big ones. If you love that local vibe, neighborhood bar kinda place, then this spot’s calling your name. Rural and Baseline, just behind the gas station.

As cell phone photography continues to grow in popularity, more resources are available for “phonetographers.” A quick web search will turn up some helpful tips and techniques and give you the answers to some commonly-asked questions. Also -- a few universities have started to incorporate cell phone photography courses into their arts and journalism programs.

Phonetography: Beyond Snapshots By Stephen Gittins, Photographer/ Artist/Educator From taking self-portraits to documenting some of the most pivotal moments in recent history, cell phone cameras have had a huge impact on the way we create and share images with one another. All you have to do is look at Facebook, Twitter or Instagram – and you can see that millions of people use their cell phone cameras on a near-daily basis. However, many “phonetographers” aren’t aware of all the possibilities at their fingertips. Cell phone cameras aren’t limited to just taking quick, point-and-click photos for social media. With some instruction, camera phone owners can learn to take high-quality photos that are worthy of being framed and displayed, as well as posted online. Some of the elements that create a great cell phone photo are the same elements that work for traditional photography: an understanding of what makes a good shot (composition), how to focus on a subject, and how to use different depths of field. Other factors are unique to the mobile medium, like determining which detachable lenses work best with your camera and which apps will be most helpful to you in your photographic

When I decided to open my photography education center, Capture12 (www.capture12. com), in Downtown Phoenix, I felt it was important to include a 1 ½ hour class dedicated solely to cell phone photography. As a professional photographer, I have become enamored with my cell phone camera! Granted, it has its limitations, but learning how to understand those limitations and work with them can help you to achieve the best possible photographs. I know my cell phone camera cannot replace the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera, but for many of us, a cell phone camera is the most convenient and accessible photography device we have (I have mine in my pocket as I’m writing this!). For photographers and photography enthusiasts, learning how to best use a cell phone camera can open up a new world of possibilities ranging from documentary work to fine art photography. The best part is -- you don’t have to invest in expensive equipment, you can simply learn how to use this tool that’s already at your disposal. Bio: Stephen Gittins is a documentary photographer and a native of Wales, U.K. Stephen first traveled to Arizona for a photography project at the Navajo reservation. He later attended Arizona State University where he earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Photography Education.www. capture12.com

5 SYMPTOMS OF AN ADRENALINE RUSH! 1. Noticeable Increase in Your Strength

People who undergo an adrenaline rush during a major emergency have been known to do some crazy things. Some have lifted cars off the bodies of children. If you undergo an adrenaline rush, it’s likely that you will have greater strength than when you do

not have adrenaline on your side. If you are in the gym and you get an adrenaline rush, you may be able to lift more weight than you ever could before. An adrenaline rush gives you a great deal of strength throughout your body.

2. No Feelings of Pain An adrenaline rush can also be used

to protect your body. If you’ve ever played a sport and injured yourself, there’s a good chance that, initially, you didn’t feel much pain. Even if you broke a bone, your body helps protect you from the pain by using an adrenaline rush. Once the adrenaline wears off, you’ll be able to feel the pain again, but for the time being, the adrenaline will stop the pain.

3. Heightened Senses From your vision to your touch, your senses will be dramatically heightened when you are undergoing an adrenaline rush.

4. Sudden Boost of Energy

September 6th, 2012 - September 12th, 2012

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Again, if you have ever played sports, you’re usually more likely to be super pumped up when the game or match first starts. This is because an adrenaline rush will give you a large amount of energy as the body releases glucose and sugar directly into your bloodstream.

5. Increased Breathing Because everything happens so fast during an adrenaline rush, your breathing and your heart rate will jump suddenly. Your blood pressure will also go up, and you may even start to sweat to prevent your muscles from getting overworked during an adrenaline rush.

Moving forward with RUSH, a closer look at ten of the most dangerous stunts ever successfully performed in the history of mankind by the bravest and most daring of men. Or perhaps,

individuals missing a chromosome or two, with too much time on their hands. We’ll leave that up to you. One must ask themselves however, if the tables were turned, would you have the “marbles” to set out to conquer any one of these death-defying, hairstanding, jaw-dropping feats? #9 Harold Lloyd / Actor Underrated, but nonetheless a genius of the silent movie era.

R

Lloyd made over 200 films during the 1940s, where in nearly every film he performed some sort of thrilling daredevil stunt, the reason why he was so sought after. In his early career he lost a finger and thumb when a prop bomb he was carrying (on the set of Haunted Spooks) exploded by accident. His stunts varied every time, from scaling walls to walking along skyscrapers. He even hung from a clock tower by his fingertips while filming Safety Last.
