The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs

Apple junkie Mike Daiseyʼs controversial first-person retelling of stories from the Foxconn factory in China where most of the worldʼs electronic gadgets are produced, The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, will open Actors Theatreʼs 2012-13 season, Sept. 21 to Oct. 7, on Stage West of the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe. The New York Times reported that “anyone with a cellphone and a moral center should see” The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs. Even Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, told the newspaper that “I will never be the same after seeing that show.” Daisey and his play were the focus of recent controversy when National Public Radioʼs Ira Glass, the executive producer and host of This American Life, issued a retraction of a 39-minute piece about The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs indicating that it contained “significant fabrications.” The story aired in January and became its most popular podcast with 888,000 downloads. “Weʼre horrified to have let something like this onto public radio,” Glass said. Actors Theatre will be staging Daiseyʼs revised script which addresses the issues raised during the controversy. For tickets visit www.actorstheatrephx.org .

ARTS! The Secret Garden

Presented by Hale Centre Theatre at Hale Centre Theatre Thursday 7:00 p.m. Friday-Saturday 7:30 p.m. Saturday 3:00 p.m. Hale Centre Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Secret Garden. Francis Hodgson Burnett’s cherished 1911 children’s book comes vibrantly to life with the story of Mary, an orphaned girl sent to live on her uncle’s estate in England. Once there, she discovers a locked garden, and her persistence in finding the key to enter uncovers startling secrets and a family tragedy. With the help of her cousin, Colin, and Dickon, a boy from the moors, Mary brings new life to both the long-neglected garden and the griefstricken family. This enchanting musical was adapted by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman, with music by Lucy Simon that includes the songs “Lily’s Eyes,” “Hold On,” “How Could I Ever Know” and “Race You to the Top of the Morning.” It’s a theatrical experience neither you nor your children will soon forget.

Sondre Lerche

Presented by MIM Music Theatre at MIM Music Theatre Tuesday, September 25 - 7:00 p.m. At seventeen years old, Sondre Lerche began his recording career under the Virgin Norway label in 2000. Within two years, the young Norwegian wunderkind was generating increasing industry buzz and public attention. Lerche’s distinctive voice and natural talent for writing appealing pop tunes that were alternately sunny and melancholic quickly established him as a definite contender for significance throughout Europe and beyond. Lerche wrote his first song, “Locust Girl,” at fourteen. Soon after, he was performing acoustic gigs at the club where his sister worked while he was still underage; he was “discovered” by Norwegian producer Hans Petter “HP” Gunderson. Under Gunderson’s mentorship, Lerche was exposed to diverse music genres, including psychedelia,

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s American classic was more than a hit – it was the first real phenomenon in the modern Broadway era. Oklahoma! is the story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections: Curly, a cowboy; and Jud, the hired farmhand. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Oklahoma! also tackles class issues between the farmers and the cattlemen in the rugged landscape of a state in its infancy. This brilliant first collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein set box office records as it ushered in the Golden Age of American Musical Theatre. ABT’s own Executive Producer, Kiel Klaphake, takes the director’s chair for this beloved musical, adding another favorite show to his list of directorships at ABT, including Cabaret, Gypsy, The Full Monty, and Sunset Boulevard.

Klaphake is excited to bring this classic to the ABT stage, and said, “This show ushered in the modern musical theatre where musical expressions were rooted directly in the story. Previously, musical theatre had great songwriters and ‘ok’ scripts. R&H were the first to have a true collaboration.” Oklahoma was truly the first of its kind, and the Broadway world was forever changed by its fresh approach to the theatre. Klaphake said, “Their process began with Hammerstein writing lyrics and Rogers adding music. A real departure from the past when the songwriters had great melodies, that someone else, sometimes years later, put words to them.” Acting at leading lady “Laurey” is ABT alumni Jennifer Bell, having played such memorable roles as Maggie in A Chorus Line and Kathy inSingin’ in the Rain. Bell, a graduate of Florida State University’s Music Theatre program, is a New York resident with other notable roles to her credit, including the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Ermengarde in Hello, Dolly! Mathieu Amalric plays a renowned musician who, since his beloved violin was broken, has lost all taste for life. Finding no instrument worthy of replacing it, he decides to confine himself to bed to await death. (PG-13 – 93 minutes)

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

*Not reviewed.

Karl Urban plays an urban cop who possesses the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner, challenged with ridding a futuristic city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey also star. (R – 100 minutes)

When a young woman (Louise Grinberg) accidentally becomes pregnant, she encourages her friends and fellow classmates to follow suit. It’s only a matter of time before 17 girls in the high school are pregnant and the town is thrown into a world of chaos. (NR – 90 minutes)

‘10 Years’ Follows a group of friends on the night of their high school reunion who, a decade later, still have not quite grown up. Stars include Channing Tatum, Jenna DewanTatum, Rosario Dawson, Chris Pratt, Ari Graynor, Justin Long, Max Minghella, Lynn Collins, Oscar Isaac and Kate Mara. (R – 100 minutes) Joseph: “‘10 Years’ resonantly reflects the multitude of emotions one experiences upon revisiting the 4 most affecting years of their life. However, although writer/director Jamie Linden’s new movie starts strong – speaking sincerely to anyone who, like myself, has recently attended their own high school reunion – it loses steam the moment that its characters head to the local watering hole, at which time it turns into just a generic ensemble dramedy. Still, said ensemble is excellent enough to earn our forgiveness as we could essentially watch some of these actors read the phone book and remain entertained.” Grade: C

Stan: “Inspired by true events in 2008 and unique in the approach, ’17 Girls’ is the perspective from the girls that reveals their points of view as they face the totality of their choice to become pregnant, from peer influences, family reactions pro & con, views on sexuality, responsibility, companionships, love, and ultimately their futures. As the closing credits roll, I had very strong feelings of parental protection withmy sheltering instincts on high alert. In French with English subtitles.” Grade: B-

UltraStar Exclusive: ‘Beloved’* Catherine Deneuve plays a Parisian woman who rekindles an affair from 30 years earlier with a Czech doctor (Milos Forman) while her daughter (Chiara Mastroianni) is caught between a musician (Paul Schneider) who is incapable of devoting himself to her and her ex (Louis Garrel) who still pines for her. (NR – 139 minutes) *Not made available for review.

‘Chicken with Plums’*

Stan:“In a very ‘stylized’ production of the comic book character, ‘Dredd 3D’ withKarl Urban in the lead role, convincingly delivered an enduring character with his voice and body language as his face is hidden by helmet. With an ‘ultra-violence’ style, the tone has been set for a franchise in the making, as the story makes way for a next installment!”Grade: B Joseph: “‘Dredd 3D’ is a visually visceral cinematic experience. That is to say that the story is so intense that you can literally feel it within your bones. Having said that, seeing bullets permeate faces in slow motion may turn the stomachs of some viewers – including horrorholics, like myself, who have grown desensitized to even the most graphic violence. Nonetheless, this unapologetically savage style is what makes director Pete Travis’s futuristic thriller, a re-adaptation of the comic book character that previously inspired a 1995 blockbuster that starred Sylvester Stallone, so exorbitantly entertaining.” Grade: B

‘End of Watch’* Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña play a pair of young Los Angeles police officers who discover a secret that makes them the target of the country’s most dangerous drug cartel. Frank Grillo, Anna Kendrick and America Ferrera also star. (R – 109 minutes)

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

The original title for ‘Brave’(2012) was ‘The Bear and the Bow’. *Screened after deadline.

‘House at the End of the Street’* Jennifer Lawrence plays a young woman who, against her mother’s (Elisabeth Shue) wishes, begins a relationship with a young man (Max Thieriot) whose parents were murdered in their beds by his sister. The closer they get, the deeper they are all pulled into a mystery more dangerous than they ever imagined. (PG-13 – 101 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

‘The Master’ Joaquin Phoenix plays a Naval veteran who arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Amy Adams also stars. (R – 148 minutes) Joseph: “‘The Master’ is just one enormous enigma. That is to say that writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s new drama is too ambiguous, failing to either entertain viewers or leave them feeling psychologically satisfied. Fortunately, though, it serves as an exhibition of excellent acting, which is enough to sustain those who mistakenly walk into the movie expecting ‘There Will Be Blood.’ Star Joaquin Phoenix commands the screen, profoundly portraying a complicated character that is like a walking, talking, ticking time bomb. His performance alone makes this puzzle worth trying to put together.” Grade: C

‘[REC]³ Génesis’ Leticia Dolera and Diego Martín play a bride and groom who finds themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on their wedding. Amidst the chaos, they become separated and begin a desperate search for one another. (R – 80 minutes) Joseph: “The first 20 minutes of ‘[REC]³ Génesis’ makes for a thrilling threequel. The subsequent hour, on the other hand, is unworthy of the franchise’s title. Writer/ director Paco Plaza’s third installment starts strong, utilizing the found-footage filming technique to make moviegoers part of the horror that is happening on the screen. Unfortunately, Plaza switches to a standard narrative about a quarter of the way through, stripping the entry of its edge-of-your-seat scares. As a result, the flickcomes across as a cheap knockoff but it still bests most movies about the undead by no less than a mile.” Grade: C

‘Trouble with the Curve’ Clint Eastwood plays a baseball scout who refuses to be benched for what may be the final innings of his career. The one person who might be able to help is also the one person he would never ask – his daughter (Amy Adams), an associate at a high-powered law firm who jeopardizes her own career to save his. Justin Timberlake also stars. (PG-13 – 111 minutes) Stan: “As with last year’s ‘Moneyball’ (2012), baseball is only the backdrop for a poignant examination of the dynamics of a father-daughter relationship with extenuating circumstances as both father (Clint Eastwood) and daughter (Amy Adams) are more mirror images of each other than either would like to admit. For baseball fans, as this reviewer, the title of the movie has special meaning while the duties and influences of a baseball scout with the team they represent is a sports bonus!” Grade: B

‘Unconditional’ Lynn Collins plays a woman who loses her faith and her will to live when her husband is killed in a senseless act of violence. But as she watches her oldest

September 20th, 2012 - September 26th, 2012

friend (Michael Ealy) care for and love the kids in his under-resourced neighborhood, she begins to realize that God is always reaching out to us – no matter the circumstances. (PG-13 – 92 minutes) Joseph: “‘Unconditional’ leaves viewers feeling refreshed, rejuvenating their optimism about life. The new spiritual drama from writer/director Brent McCorkle is an inspiring exploration of how the universe’s coincidences can lift us out of our darkest depths and deliver us to our grandest revelations. In addition to absolutely avoiding the forced feelings that are typical of its genre, the film features extremely exceptional performances from stars Lynn Collins and Michael Ealy as well as the young actors who portray the pair as children. (The movie’s novelization and children’s book “Firebird,” as figured in the flick, are also now available.)” Grade: B

‘The Well Digger’s Daughter’* Daniel Auteuil plays a widower who dreams of marrying off his eldest of six daughters (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) to his loyal assistant (Kad Merad). But when she is impregnated by a wealthy young pilot (Nicolas Duvauchelle) who promptly abandons her for the frontlines, the widower is left to contend with the consequences. (NR – 105 minutes) *Not reviewed.

‘You May Not Kiss the Bride’ Dave Annable plays an unassuming pet photographer who is thrown head first into a series of unforeseeable events when he is forced to marry a Croatian mobster’s daughter (Katharine McPhee) and spend his honeymoon at a secluded Tahitian resort where the bride is kidnapped. Mena Suvari, Kathy Bates and Rob Schneider also star. (PG-13 – 100 minutes) Joseph: “‘You May Not Kiss the Bride’ is an enjoyable albeit silly screwball comedy. That is to say that writer/director Rob Hedden new movie guarantees you a good time so long as you do not take it too seriously and instead appreciate it for what it is. Fortunately, that is easy

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

to do as a result of the quick-witted pace of its plot and a supporting cast of recognizable actors playing extremely eccentric characters. Having said that, all of the absurdity also holds the motion picture back, preventing it from being as heartwarming as it is humorous.” Grade: C

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actress Jenna DewanTatum (‘10 Years’) By Joseph J. Airdo “Jamie Linden, [Channing Tatum], our producing partner Reid Carolin and I were all brainstorming one day and we thought about how great of an idea a 10 year high school reunion movie would be. We were all contemplating going to our own reunions we thought that would be a good movie. Jamie wrote a script, we filmed a short and 8 months later we were filming in Albuquerque. It all happened sort of quickly – very unlike how it normally happens in Hollywood. “We got this great group of actors together. We filmed it over the holidays, which made it a bit easier, schedulingwise, to get as many actors as we did. I think they all liked the idea of having so much freedom while filming. Jamie really wanted us to do a lot of improvisation – to play, as actors, and create these characters to be whatever we wanted them to be. That is a very rare thing. It does not happen very often so I think that people were intrigued and interested by that. “This is an interesting portrayal of people, human nature and just life. How much people change and how much people really do not change, which I think is actually even more interesting. Your surroundings may change but your essence and your personality pretty much stay the same. I think that is pretty much a lot of what the movie speaks to. It is sort of like if you went to your high

It is a behind the scenes look at what everybody was really feeling.” – Jenna Dewan-Tatum

Actress Olivia Thirlby (‘Dredd 3D’) By Joseph J. Airdo “When you first meet my character, she is incredibly vulnerable because she has failed her judge aptitude test. She is unfit, on paper, to do this and be this thing that is all she has ever really wanted in her whole life. So you meet her in this very precarious place where she has really only one chance – and it might kill her. She spends the first half of the movie trying really hard to just keep it all together and do the right thing. “It is only once all of that completely falls apart and she thinks that she has no chance of getting what it is that she most wants that she really becomes herself. That is a beautifully human arc and something that everyone can relate to. For me, playing [my character’s] strength and playing her vulnerability went hand in hand. I think that it is the combination of both of those things together that make her believable. “I really identified with how her sensitivity

and her vulnerability were also her greatest strengths and what set her apart in the world and made her special. They were also things that, on paper, made her unworthy. So I thought that was really interesting. Especially as a woman, being sensitive is a good thing. Women are constantly told today that they are too sensitive and that is a bad thing. I think that where [my character] really excels is in her sensitivity. “She is so incredibly sensitive to everything around her and, normally, that would make her unfit to be a judge. But she knows in her heart and proves over the course of the film that it is that sensitivity that really makes her capable of being just. And I think that is a pretty major lesson to take away. The key is in being more sensitive – not shutting down and closing off. That might make your decisions easier but it will not make you happy.” – Olivia Thirlby

Actor Michael Peña (‘End of Watch’) By Stan Robinson “When it comes to roles, I gotta like the movie and I’ve gotta like the part!’I can see that you’ve spent a lot of time on set. Its interesting because sometimes you can get over directed and the director will start to cut back here, trim there, enhance

here, and that’s never fun. And I don’t think the final product is never good, most of the time it’s probably general because you’re saying something the way other people want you to say it and not how you feel it. “You know how it is with actors, you can ‘AD’ them (referring to Stan Robinson’s work as an Assistant Director on set) one year and then the next year they’re just much better or they’re not, maybe get complacent or something is happening in their life, or they get that ‘spark’ you talked about. That’s our job mainly as actors, to keep inspired and be inspired, and that’s been what I’ve really concentrated on over the past few years, keep that energy going. And yes, it is a learning process because if you shut everything down, pretending like you know every thing, you don’t know anything (laughing) and you’ll be doing very predictable work!” – Michael Peña

‘Don’t Divorce Me!’ premieres on HBO By Joseph J. Airdo

Valley parents who are going through a divorce may benefit from watching a new documentary that is scheduled to premiere 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 on HBO. According to press materials, when a couple is going through a divorce, they can forget exactly how and to what extent it affects their kids. “Don’t Divorce Me! Kids’ Rules for Parents on Divorce” sheds light on the subject, offering divorce do’s and don’ts as kids share “rules” their parents should follow while serving as a tool for families struggling to find their way. Said “rules” include, “Tell me it’s not my fault,” “Don’t put me in the middle,” “Don’t take your anger out on me,” and “Respect my feelings.” Producer Rosie O’Donnell and director Amy Schatz use the documentary to give young children an opportunity to share their stories to remind parents that divorce is hard on them – the splitting of time, home and family – but there are ways to make it better.

• While pizzas will appear on 99 percent of all American menus in 2012, the craze for creative toppings like truffle oil, sushi, buckhorn, and wood sorrel will cease.

2012-13 FOOD PREDICTIONS STRAIGHT FROM THE PROS The rapacious appetite of the food media requires they declare new trends and jettison old ones every other month — remember the banh mi rage? Fried chicken’s fifteen minutes of fame? Hamburger mania? Up, down, in and out. So, this being year’s end, predictions for next year’s food trends are being proposed with dispatch. Here are some of the things to expect you’ll be seeing in 2013, and a few things that you will not… • At best, the economy won’t completely tank, but it will be sluggish enough to keep restaurants sales flat, with more people dining out far less often and spending a lot less money. Instead of ordering “little plates,” people will order one big plate and share. • Expense accounts will be cut way back so that few businessmen and women will be popping for wines over $100 a bottle. The opening of new steakhouses will slow way down, and expect the closing of some famous-name restaurants in Las Vegas. • The extravagance and elitism of modernist/molecular/progressive cuisine will stop the already tiresome, wheezing movement in its tracks. No one is going to be opening a place serving thirty-course, $200 meals made out of thin air and chemically-induced aromas.

• Except maybe in Chicago, the overbuilt gastropub scene will die down as people realize it now costs just as much to eat rabbit rillettes from a jar, a pork chop, and two bottles of artisanal beer as to go to a high-end steakhouse and order the porterhouse for two.

• Better, cheaper French country wines will be imported, while inferior, more expensive Spanish and South American wines will try to flood the market. The term “California Cult Wine,” referring to boutique estates charging outrageous prices for high alcohol fruit bombs will fade from the media, just as the wines themselves go unsold. • No one in his right mind will open an Italian restaurant charging $26 for a plate of pasta. • The Michelin Guide, whose tirecompany owners are making major sales inroads in Japan, will declare 392 new three-star restaurants in Osaka “worth a journey” in your car.

Invites You to Meet

Fabio Motta

And to Taste the Incredible Wines of

Michele Satta

Let’s see about dialing in your own wine tasting palate. You want be able to express yourself when asked, “What do you think of the wine?” Something more detailed than, “Uh, it’s good. I like it.” The proper way to taste wine is: look, sniff, swirl, sniff again, and swish around in your mouth. The challenge is in identifying the aromas and flavors of what you’ve just sniffed and swished. You might hear people talk about retro-nasal breathing. What? It’s simple: after you take a drink of wine, close your mouth and push your breath through your nose. Let the aromas play out! I’m told the nose is capable of detecting 180 different aromas in wine. Once I went to a wine tasting competition (spoiler alert: I lost) and we had to detect not just high level essences, such as “floral”, but we had to name the specific flower. Most of us however just want to taste a glass of wine and be able to put into words what wetasted and what we thought of it.

The descriptive terms don’t need to be pretentious. To talk about the appearance (sight) of the wine, you might choose one of the following: bright, clear, hazy, or concentrated. For the nose, you could use words like delicate, powerful, intense, and be sure to describe the fruit that you detect such as cherry, berries, citrus. For the taste on your palate, wine is either sweet or dry. The body is either light or full. The tannins, acidity, and alcohol are either low or high. And the finish is long or short—in the simplest terms. Long ago someone sent me a case of wine. My first thought was—I appreciate the generosity, but how will I enjoy 12 bottles of the same wine. Since it was the only wine in my house, it became the go-to source. Instead of becoming bored with it, I really sharpened up my wine palate. By turning to the same wine, I realized I was learning all kinds of nuances and detecting more aromas and flavors than I ever would have, had I only tried it one time. This is certainly one approach to grooming your palate – stay with one wine and know it inside and out.

7131 WEST RAY ROAD SUITE 45 CHANDLER, AZ 85226

Another tactic – and perhaps a more entertaining one, is to try a vertical wine tasting. A “vertical” is simply a tasting of several years (preferably consecutive years) of the same wine. A vertical tasting is beneficial because it gives you the opportunity to detect influences from one year to the next, such as the weather. So the next time you’re asked about a wine, I know you’ll respond knowledgeably.

Discovering Pink By David Newton, Sommelier & Host, www.TeachingWineOnline.com Dry Rosé is one of the most perfect food pairing wines and it is considered one of the only red wines that can be enjoyed below room temperature, which is why it should be the best selling wine during our Arizona summers. But it’s not… Dry Rosé has been suffering from an identity crisis ever since White Zinfandel hit the shelves back in the mid-seventies. White Zinfandel was the result of a mistake in the winemaking process. In 1975, at

Sutter Homes’ winery, a winemaker experienced “stuck fermentation” during the winemaking process. This problem occurs when yeasts die out before consuming the sugars, thus leaving a high sugar content. This sweet, or “off dry” as we say in the wine business, wine had only a brief period of time during the winemaking process where it was in contact with the skins of the Zinfandel grapes. Considering that the skin of the grape is where a red wine gets 100% of its color, the brief contact only allowed the blush color to arrive. This brief period of skin contact is in

fact the same way Dry Rosé is made, however the sugar levels are much lower. It is simply a red winethat

The ‘dry’ in Dry Rosé comes from the pleasant acid that balances out the delicate fruit characteristics. The acid is what we use as a pairing tool in the wine and food world. They cut the fat in cream sauces and fatty proteins, causing a yin-and-yang effect.

didn’t make it all the way to the ‘red’ that we see in most red wines.

All said, Dry Rosé should fly off the shelves in the hot Arizona summer and some stores such as AJ’s Fine Foods beef up their rosé section during the summer season. People who have had the opportunity to vacation in Southern France certainly notice pink wines on every table at street cafes. And I assure you, it’s not White Zinfandel. While the temperature in Phoenix is still pushing 100 degrees, why don’t you give a dry rosé a shot? “What do I pair it with?” you ask. Throw a dart. You can’t miss. Most meats and fish go well with a Dry Rosé, because it is already balanced in the glass (halfway between a red and a white wine). However, my best recommendation is to pair a Dry Rosé with… a good conversation.

By Nathan Brugnone, www. UpTheCreekAZ.com Well, I’m back in Michigan again for yet another funeral. My grandfather passed away on my birthday, September 8, 2012. He is a true testament to the aging process – as wine, he seemed only to get better with age, too. So, let’s take a moment to reflect on our stockpile of wines and resist uncorking at least a couple! What does aging do? You’ll get many answers to this question, and I’ve got a few to share. First, most of the tannic, bity, “dry” wines need to take a rest after bottling, preferably for a year or three --- or more!

In essence, this is what happens to nasty wines. They become voluptuous, smooth temptresses via natural processes.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 9/20

o Everything molecule gets to know each other. Wine needs to do some self-discovery before proclaiming, “Drink me!” Why? Wine is bound by time and rewards patience. Why this is, I cannot tell you. One thing I can say is that corks should be replaced every 10 – 15 years – or at least that’s what I’m told. I’ve never had a wine that long! That’s longer than half my life thus far! Celebrate my 29th with me and take a glass up for my grandfather, a mayor, a WWII USAF instructor, a weekly church choir singer and an extremely witty man. Cheers!

●● What does this do? o The short chain tannins, the tongue-coating puckerers, hang out for a bit and bond together forming long chain polymers.

packing that night even though the event was two weeks away. Upon arriving, I signed up for the Tropic Beauty Poker Tournament that was about to start at 1pm that Saturday.

It was a fun tournament with over 100 entrants and the final 10 just chopped the prize money - One of the Tropic Beauty models made it to the final 2 tables (I got down to the final three)

There was a special bonus - one Tropic Beauty contestant was playing at each table wearing very distracting short shorts and sexy tops. We had a double bonus – since they placed two of these young ladies at our table. I know several players had their cards mucked before they even looked at them because they were busy hitting on one of the girls!

Later that night, I made my way to the Pipa Event Center to do some heavy lifting. After all it is hard work being a judge. There were over 20 judges from various areas including the media and 4 former Tropic Beauty winners who had posed for the current Tropic Beauty Calendar. We were all given forms to fill out to pick the top 5 in the cocktail dress and bikini modeling.

Poker is good – Bikini contest better By Phil Scudella Here’s what I mean by that. Last month I was chatting with Danielle at Quechan Casino Resort near Yuma about an ad they were going to run in the August issue. I asked if anything else was going on this month, and she thought for a while and said “Well, we do have the Tropic Beauty Poker and Blackjack Tournament, plus the Bikini swimsuit competition. I needed only a blink of the eye to suggest we do an ad for that event – but I was at deadline and only had a day to put it together. She thought they could not get it done that quickly, so I asked if she had some copy about the event I could write an article about it, then she remarked, “Hey, I have a flyer here, I could e-mail that to you.” She did and when I got it, I knew that John, my graphics guy could do it in a few minutes – he did, I sent it back – she took it to her supervisor then called me back. “She loved it, go with it…Oh are you sitting down?” “Yes” I said. She repeated “are you sitting down?” “Look” I said “I’ll lay down - go ahead” “They want you to be a judge in the Tropic Beauty Model Search bikini swimsuit competition!” she said. “You mean” I asked “they want me to be up close with dozens of sexy bikini wearing young women?” There was a long silent pause…then I said “SIGN ME UP – I’m in!” I started

BEER!

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

AUTUMN BEERS

It is that time of year again when the leaves turn color and start to drop… never mind, we live in Arizona. How about the time of year when we can stop using oven mitts to drive; or the time of year when swimming pool water stops feeling like bathwater? Either way, when Autumn gets here our thoughts turn to outdoor activities, football and beer. Fair enough, our thoughts always turn to beer, but you get the idea. Autumn beers are a unique lot. Some are produced because of Oktoberfest celebrations, some have pumpkin in them, some are stronger than usual, and some just don’t need a reason to be wonderful. Let’s take a look at favorite Autumn beers and see what is out there for you folks this year. Local breweries are hitting it hard with seasonal releases. SanTan has their annual release of Count Hopula, the blood-red IPA, perfect for

Halloween parties, or anything else you want to do. This beer has a rich ruby red color and 99 IBUs of intense Simcoe hop bitterness with enough roasted malt to balance everything out. Grand Canyon has entered the fall seasonal game with their Pumpkin Springs Porter. Named after a unique formation along the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, this is a rich flavorful beer with a pumpkin pie aroma and just the right amount of pumpkin and spices to make it flavorful but not over the top. While not technically a seasonal release, there are still bottles of Sonoran Chef Series FFF (Family, Food, Fly Fishing) in the market. This IPA, created with Chef Eddie Matney, definitely has a grapefruit aroma, perhaps because there is grapefruit in it, along with some brown sugar a little bit of basil. Another year round beer that fits perfect with your Halloween party is College Street’s Sweet Devil Stout…a nice mixture of coffee and dark

chocolate, a great name and an ABV of 6.66% make it the right beer for your event. Oktoberfest beers are always popular. This year, you can find this style from Left Hand, Bell’s, and Lakefront. All three are done in a very traditional German style, using imported ingredients. These beers are brewed in the spring and then cellared through the summer. This produces a smooth beer with a clean, malty flavor. Perfect for the Fall weather and some nice bratwurst. For a different fall theme, try the Coney Island Freaktoberfest, another blood-red IPA, this one brewed by the slightly off-kilter folks at Shmaltz Brewing. Pumpkin beers always do well. In addition to the aforementioned Grand Canyon product, Buffalo Bill’s offers a pumpkin beer that has a large following. Also, Pumpkin Lager

from Lakefront is incredibly popular. As noted in the name, it is a lager, not an ale, making it one of the only commercially brewed pumpkin lagers available. The crisp smoothness from the lager process provides a unique experience. There are a variety of just plain “fall” beers available as well. Breckenridge Brewing greets the season with Autumn Ale, a high ABV ale brewed with similar ingredients to an Oktoberfest beer, but more

of them and without the lagering. Abita Brewing offers to beers to appease your taste buds. Fall Fest is just that, a festive beer with a rich, malty component that drinks very easy; and their Pecan Harvest. Part of the Harvest Series which includes Strawberry and Satsuma, the Pecan version uses freshly harvested pecans, added to a richly crafted beer for an incredible flavor. The Bruery offers something a little different with their Autumn Maple release. This Belgian style brown ale weighs in at 10% ABV and foregoes the pumpkin theme, choosing yams as an additional flavor agent. Add in some maple syrup and this is the perfect Thanksgiving beer. Lest we forget, hops get harvested around the beginning of Autumn, so they are usually a theme in beer. New Belgium’s Red Hoptober is a darker amber ale with a generous amount of El Dorado hops. This hop varietal was first released in 2010 and has already made an incredible impact. Tropical flavors with a little hint of fresh cut grass in the aroma, serve to add to

a beer like Red Hoptober, giving it a slight warming from the bitterness. The addition of some Cascade and Centennial hops round out the experience. The best part of the hop harvest is the fresh hop beers. These beers typically use hops that are added as whole flowers without being dried. It is an expensive proposition as a beer will usually require five times as much fresh hop as dried hop, but the end result is worth it. Fresh hop beers tend to have a brightness to the hop flavor that cannot be achieved any other way. The flavors figuratively explode off your palate. Some outstanding examples of fresh hop beers available in Arizona later this fall include Great Divide Fresh Hop, Left Hand Warrior, Port Brewing High Tide and Bridgeport Hop Harvest. These beers are usually very limited and can be likened to the December wine release of Beaujolais Nouveau‌ great fresh flavors that need to be consumed while the beer is still young.

NIMBUS AMERICAN BISTRO

So there you have it. While you are out enjoying these great beers, don’t miss out on some great celebrations besides. This weekend Brat Haus in Scottsdale kicks off their Oktoberfest celebration with a ceremonial first keg tapping and special beers from Krombacher and SanTan. Make sure you try the SanTan Oktoberfest as well as the Dark and Hefeweizen from German brewer Krombacher. The brats and pretzels are outstanding as well. If you like hoppy beers, Papago Brewing features the second annual Hopageddon. With 31 hoppy beers on tap, including several specialty items, this is a hophead’s paradise. Rumor has it that Bell’s Oracle will be tapped at some point. September 29th is the SanTan Oktoberfest going on in Old Town Chandler right in front of the brewery. Great food and beer will be available…as always. October 6th keeps the party going as New Belgium brings Tour de Fat to town. Get your bicycle decorated, show up at Tempe Town Lake and take part in the ride, the music and the rest of the fun times…all with New Belgium beer available. After the Tour, head over to World of Beer where they will be in the middle of WOBtoberfest. Starting at 11:00 AM it is either a great alternative to Tour de Fat, or the best after-party ever.

There you have it…lots of great beer and fun things to do this fall. Now that the weather is cooling down, get out and support some of the outstanding new establishments with patios in town. In addition to Brat Haus and World of Beer, you can enjoy the patio at The Praying Monk in Scottsdale, Angel’s Trumpet in downtown Phoenix and the very newly opened Handlebar and Grille in Tempe. Plenty of great times to be had in the next few weeks. Enjoy.

TURBO 90, WEEEE!!!!!

Hello again friends, today let’s chat about Turbo 90, a very rare pilot brew from Odell Brewing Company. Only one keg made it into the state of Arizona, at least for the time being and I was fortunate enough to be on hand (and working) at the Fall Beer Festival at Whole Foods Chandler to sample it. According to local Odell representative J.R. Wheeler, Turbo 90 is a bolder, hoppier version of their flagship beer 90 Schilling Scottish Ale. This fine brewutilizes all the regular 90 Schilling ingredients plus Belgian candy sugar and Columbus, Horizon, Nugget and Centennial hops for big mouth feel and far more bitterness. A strong, brown American ale would best describe the flavour profile. Pouring a deep dark brown with an aroma of mixed hops and caramelized grain, this brew is certainly everything it’s described to be. Happening upon this recipe purely by accident, Doug Odell knew he had a winner with the first tip of his glass. ABV sits at a stout 6.5% yet the complexities contained here are easily identifiable as you take that all important first sip. Notes of citrus are balanced by hints of caramel and just a touch of smoke. There is an earthy quality that makes its presence felt as the beer begins to warm and your glass leans towards the half empty side. I like this brew for its balanced character and really appreciate the way the hops come though at just the right proportion and at exactly the right time.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Great food pairings include cold weather comfort foods like roast beef and gravy with rosemary mash or pepper crusted filet mignon with grilled asparagus. The perfect booze pairing is a snifter of Southern Comfort neat. As always keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail. com and I’ll leave the light on for ya!

Doc and Eddies bar in Tempe has been a local favorite in, but I was just introduced to it. Most people there know eachother and the bartender is a sassy kind of guy, it’s really fun. They have happy hour daily from 11am7pm with awesome specials. $2 domestic pints and drafts, 2.50 well and wine, 2.50 16oz cans of PBR, and all day pool tables with the purchase of an entree on Sundays!! The food specials change daily, but they do have some killer french fries and chicken tenders. With two PBRS and my entree, my bill was just over ten big ones. If you love that local vibe, neighborhood bar kinda place, then this spot’s calling your name. Rural and Baseline, just behind the gas station.

Firewater released their first album in four years last week. International Orange!, mixed by Tamir Muksat of Balkan Beat Box, carries on from where their previous collaboration, The Golden Hour, took off, slipping across new borders into uncharted territory. Created in Istanbul and Tel Aviv during the 2011 Arab Spring, their latest release captures the frenetic pulse of a world in the state of flux. The songs tap into grooves as disparate as Turkish maqsoum, Punjabi bhangra, Jamaican ska, Greek rebetiko, classic punk and old-school mambo. Firewater will be at the Crescent Ballroom (308 N. 2nd Ave) on Thursday September 27th. Visit www.crescentphx.com for more details.
