ARTS! County of Kings
Presented by ASU Gammage at ASU Gammage Friday, October 5 – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 6 – 7:00 p.m. Originally presented by Spike Lee at the Public Theater in New York, County of Kings received critical acclaim including a rave review from The New York Times’ Ben Brantley. Lemon’s unique voice flows from hard-edged drama to street poetry, creating a vivid portrait of his adverse yet often humorous coming-ofage experiences while growing up in Brooklyn in the 80s and 90s. Andersen’s performance touches on young love, sibling rivalry, juvenile crime, addiction and ultimately personal triumph in this moving oneman journey toward self-discovery and redemption. County of Kings has been staged for American audiences from coast-to-coast, in Europe and South Africa. Andersen is a critically acclaimed and award-winning stage, film and poetry artist and a Tony® Award-winning original cast member of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam On Broadway.

‘The Oranges’
‘Frankenweenie’ Charlie Tahan voices a boy who, after unexpectedly losing his beloved dog, harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life-with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when the dog gets out, the boy learns that getting a new leash on life can be monstrous. (PG – 87 minutes) Joseph:“Frankenweenie” can be likened to a bolt of lightening that strikes in precisely the same place twice. That is to say that it is a remarkably rare occurrence – a special sight to behold and an exceptional piece of entertainment. Tim Burton’s new black-and-white animated adventure, which was inspired by the director’s 1984 live-action short of the same name, feels like an intensely personal motion picture for the filmmaker. That unparalleled passion translates into an unconventional, creative and cordial celebration of

Leighton Meester plays a young woman who, newly broken up with her fiancé Ethan (Sam Rosen), returns home for Thanksgiving after a 5-year absence and has an affair with her parents’ (Oliver Platt and Allison Janney) best friend and neighbor (Hugh Laurie). (R – 92 minutes) Stan: Solid in the basic premise of two families and a love affair at the center, the overall feel of a continuing soap opera style presentation permeates a story of likable characters that’s low on drama and high on formula. Viewing characterizations by a talented cast of veteran actors is just barely enough to see it through to the predictable conclusion. (Grade: C-) Joseph: “The Oranges” would have been much more aptly titled “The Lemons.” Although director Julian Farino’s new comedy thinks that it is sweet, it leaves nothing but a sour taste in viewers’ mouths. Screenwriters Ian Helfer and Jay Reiss desperately want us to root for its adulterous May-December

They decide to help liberate some of the captive Partisans, risking their lives in the process. (PG-13 – 90 minutes) Joseph:“Saints and Soldiers: Airborne Creed” is a competently made motion picture that may pass as watchable to fans of war dramas but even they will be unable to shake the feeling that they are watching “Saving Private Ryan” light. However, the more pressing problem that plagues the new low-budget

The main characters initials in ‘The Prestige’ (2006) spell ABRA as in Abracadabra. The main Character’s first initials in ‘Inception’(2010) spell DREAMS. Film Festival we got a standing ovation and surprisingly, throughout the film, people clapped at the same areas of the film. I’ve never had a project where people are that demonstrative. It’s very rewarding for a film that was made on a very limited budget! “When I do a film I try to do it for everyone. When I went to high school, those movies where really important to me, because they were saying things that I might not be able to say myself, or they presented those elements that spoke to aspects of being a teenager. – Brian Dannelly

“My character is stuck in some kind of neuroses. He is delusional. He is psychotic. He is a narcissist. He has no empathy for other human beings. There is definitely some kind of kink in his way of gratifying himself sexually. It is a long laundry list full of issues that this guy has and he is surviving the only way he can – which is, unfortunately, horrific for everybody else.” – Vincent D’Onofrio
“I grew up by the beach so I have always been conscious of the danger of sharks in the water. There were several reported shark sightings reported and one or two shark attacks where I grew up. But to put that fear in a supermarket really forces to you ask yourself, ‘Well, then where am I safe?’” – Phoebe Tonkin

The 12th annualScottsdale International Film Festival gets underway from October 5, 2012 through October 9, 2012 at the Harkins Shea 14 Theater, 7354 East Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale, AZ. As the name Film Festival indicates, its films and, a festival. For films there’s a wide assortment of films presented on an international level, which includes a weekday morning schedule with discounted admission and exciting 2 for 1 presentations where one can view 2 movies for the price of one. The festival side offers a milieu of eateries in close proximity
“Now, it’s all I can do! I get my core list of films that I love and impassioned about all lined up, and then I freak out about my opener and closer films being Hollywood or studio films because I know they bring new people. We have three center piece films that run Saturday,
Sunday, and Monday night and I’ll give them a list of world class films to also view, and if you like them you have to tell your friends and come back and see more!” – Amy Ettinger For a program guide, information on films presented/screening schedule, special events, and to join the Scottsdale International Film Festival mailing list, visit www. along with wide choices. Founder and Executive Director Amy Ettinger meet’s the challenge of presenting world-class foreign films during these economic timeswith a unique philosophy and keen insight. “You mentioned looking forward to seeing Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut film ‘Quartet’. That’s a Weinstein title and it’s the first time that Weinstein has been willing to work with us. And that’s the route we’ve chosen. Finally one of the biggest, if not the biggest indie studio in Hollywood finally lets you have a film in your festival. 12 years ago when we started the festival, after the first season, I went off to the Toronto International Film Festival and asked them to partner with us and mentor this festival. My timing was very good. With the choices narrowing down between Los Angeles and us, they picked us. “They came here, watched what I was doing, coached me, and helped us make those in roads with the studios in LA and said, and I fought them tooth and nail, you need to bring in studio films for your opener and your closer because that’s how you will lure the new people to the festival who may be afraid of your ‘world’ films and then once they’re here, you convince them to stay and see one more film and that’s how you build an audience. And I said ‘Aha’ so now every year it’s a ‘big to do’ to

Playing the Odds By Linda Boyd
Every now and then a perfect stranger will ask me how to play a video poker hand. Honestly, I’m not sure why anybody would ask an unknown person when they have money on the line, but that’s a different story. First, I have no way of determining the cards you’ll receive on the draw, nor does anybody else. The best I can do is tell you the holds that give you the highest overall odds. How do I know? I use the software created by Dean Zamzow, author of WinPoker, in my opinion the best tutorial product on the market. There is no question about it, to get the ER (expected return) indicated on the game tables provided to the casino and available in my book, “The Video Poker Edge”, you have to play accurately. Any deviations will result in an ER less than indicated on my tables and listed by the game manufacturers, in the long run. As far as the short run, that’s any given hand or session, there are no certainties. Video Poker Odds: The best ER possible must assume long term play, defined by video poker experts to mean several royal cycles. Since a royal flush occurs approximately once every 40,000 hands five cycles means 200,000 hands. The more hands you play the closer actual results will look like the theoretical expectations. In other words, if you play 2 million hands your results will be extremely close to the data created by video poker software. Remember that I am assuming accurate play according to Zamzow/WinPoker software. You may think that all the conditions make the theoretical figures “pie-in-thesky”, but that is not the case at all. If you are just able to play basic video poker correctly for your chosen game, like basic blackjack by the rules, you will come very close to receiving the best odds possible. My strategy cards (free and in the back of my book) will easily allow you to play the 8 core games accurately. You will find at least one but usually more of these core games in every casino that has video poker. You must be playing, however, in a state like Arizona or Nevada that requires RNG’s (random number generators). A few states, New York, for example, has VLT’s
PLAY! SECTION - Sponsored by Arizona Player Magazine
and no strategy in the world will work there. All outcomes will be based solely on luck if there are no RNG’s. Again, Arizona is a great place to play because all video poker devices have RNG’s. Dark Cloud: Just like other frequent players I have been on the wrong end of the bell-shaped curve more times than I care to remember. Does this mean it’s okay to play hunches? Not at all. You will be better off calling it a day and leaving the casino floor than playing wildly and against the odds. You really can’t assess the validity of the odds or accuse the house of gaffing the machines based on short-term results. Sometimes the cloud hangs over your head for several royal cycles but simulations with millions of hands programed to play according to the software clearly indicate the theoretical ER is correct. Learning the Odds: No matter how “good in math” you are or how long you’ve played, there are too many potential dealt hands to know the correct holds without practicing on the software or using video poker strategy cards. Keep in mind there are approximately 2,500,000 possible dealt hand combinations (assuming a 52-card deck) and 32 potential choices of holds after the deal, including holding all or holding none. If you choose to play the same game, say 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6 JOB) until you know the basics you’ll be able to remember the key plays rather quickly. Final Thoughts: Video poker can be the best play in the casino but if, and only if, you find an ER equal to or greater than 100% and you are able to play the odds. By all means add on the extra value of the slot club points and any promotion offered. But before you start counting your chickens make sure you understand that playing the odds means according to 100% accurate software, like WinPoker. You’ll come close to the theoretical ER over time with good basic game strategy; however, if you only play hunches or ask a mysterious neighbor for the correct holds then you might as well stick with slots. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube video, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. WINE! SECTION - Sponsored By www.ArizonaVinesandWines.com 34
From Honeycomb to... Cat Pee?*
by Amanda Lewis Painter. Weaver. Mad scientist. Any of these terms could be used to describe the ‘winemaker.’ Blending wine is an art after all. Like paint, mixing two or even three colors in varying amounts can create new, beautiful shades of various hues. Like fabric of different weight and texture, weaving them together creates something new, comforting, warming with only a slight resemblance of the original material that was pulled from the earth. And like weaving a fabric, what one wine is lacking in fullness or body, another wine can accentuate, bring to life and make whole.
Some might argue that the purity of a single varietal is the truest form of art in winemaking. But I contest that the blending of grapes to create a wine with distinct characteristics is a testament to the artist and deserving of praise from the art community. I say, a great wine doesn’t just blend grapes; it also has the ability to blend together people from different backgrounds and ways of life. Wine, like people, has personality and is unique. And, like people, some wine you like and some you don’t. Which, when you think about it, can really be said of any art. Wouldn’t you agree?
Authentic. Fresh. Local.

*I cannot take credit for the title of this blog post. This elegant nugget comes from ‘Tony’ at Caduceus Cellars in Jerome, AZ (www.caduceus.org). And as we visited with him during a recent wine tasting and talked about his lottery winnings and love for food and cooking, the wine really did go from honeycomb all the way to cat pee. Thank you, Tony, for being you, and for giving me another memorable wine / people blending experience in Arizona wine country.
But wine is also more complex than that. Still an art form, perhaps that’s where the mad scientist comes in. I believe that the joy of winemaking can be found in blending. Experimenting. Creating something new that has the power to bring people together to share and enjoy.

People who enjoy wine may prefer to drink it and not focus too much on the business of wine. Still, it is a topic that comes up often in wine circles –what does it take to get the bottle to our tables and how are the bottle prices determined? The wine industry can be divided into two large economic sectors: agriculture and distribution. The basic business model is “grow-make-wholesale-distribute and sell again.” Then we get to drink it! It’s always interesting to me to see which parts of the wine industry certain wine lovers are drawn to. Some find great appeal in the agricultural end – the planting and tending of vines, soil composition, seasonal phases—the most alluring of which is the harvest. Others are really interested in packaging, logistics, distribution—basically how the wine gets into your hands. Marketing and style devotees, as you’d expect, love packaging choices –like corks, labels, bottle heft, engraving, etc. People on the two main sides of the industry have persuasive views, of course, on what drives the ultimate cost of a bottle of wine. Personally, I have seen first-hand the cost obligation of the agricultural and winemaking side, mostly in capital equipment and labor, not to mention risks to yields and grape quality. Drought anyone? These enormous capital and production costs “fill up the bottle” before it even leaves the winery. On the other hand, those on the postbottling side of the business have their own share of costs. With everyone who touches the process seeking to make margin (or at least make a living!), there’s a lot that goes into wine pricing and it can seem complicated. This is why it’s important to not purchase a wine solely on the basis of its price.
7131 WEST RAY ROAD SUITE 45 CHANDLER, AZ 85226
Right now in the U.S., value-conscious wine pricing is predominant. At the recent Wine Industry Financial Symposium held in Napa, they spoke with hope that “frugality fatigue” will wind down and consumers will start to trade up. Which side of the business impacts wine pricing the most? Wine is such a multi-faceted commodity, the question is not easily answered. For the world’s most desired wines, especially cult wines, that may not even be the right question. At that level, it’s more limited supply and high demand resulting in high prices in the market. The good news is – there are so many nice wines available at every price point!

How to Read a Wine Label
•
Vineyard. If the grapes in the bottle came from a certain vineyard, the information will likely be displayed on the front of the bottle. If fact, everything mentioned so far must appear on the front label.
•
ABV or alcohol by volume. This information not only tells you how schnockered you’ll get by drinking a glass, but also how long a wine can last in bottle. 11% is low and not really ageable; 15% is going to stay happy in its home through the next century.
By Nathan Brugnone, www. JavelinaLeapWinery.com Beyond the graphics and pretty colors, a wine label contains a wealth of information about the wine inside the bottle. In fact, much of this information is legally required to be displayed at a certain font: this includes things like ABV (alcohol by volume), brand, region, vintage (if applicable), sulfites, and other minutia. Of most concern to the majority of wine drinkers are the following: •
Producer or brand name. This information tells you who made the wine, but not necessarily who grew it. Beringer, Gallo, Caduceus Cellars—all of these are brand names.
•
Vintage. This refers to not the year the wine was bottled, but the year the grapes were grown.

Varietal or style. Chardonnay, Merlot, Bordeaux, Meritage, Chianti—the first two are types of grapes, while the following are types of wine blends and styles. Chianti is made from the Sangiovese grape from the Chianti region of Italy, usually fermented by wild yeasts. It’s the stuff you drink loads of at Macaroni Grill and then tell them you’ve only had a glass!

Classes
By Rhonni Moffitt, ArizonaVinesAndWines.com Wanting to learn more about a new restaurant helmed by Chef Robert McGrath, I visited Market Street Kitchen in DC Ranch Marketplace, in North Scottsdale last week. Intrigued by this new concept, I was excited to learn more about their menu, vision and wine list. When I asked Bartender Extraordinaire Rich Heider what I should notice about their wine list, he pointed out the selections they had on tap. I was really surprised that they had Treffethen Chardonnay for only $11 a glass! A bargain for this top-notch wine. I was first introduced to “wine-on-tap” at the Devoured Culinary Classic last spring. A local distributor showcased a selection of wines on tap. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the wines I tasted were. The concept of wine in a keg is being embraced nationwide. There is a cost to the establishment to add the keg wine system but the cost can be quickly recouped due to the lower price of these wines. The price is lower than the same wine in a bottle because you no longer are paying for bottles, corks, the bottling machine or the labor to bottle the wine… and you also remove any possibility of cork taint. It’s also considered environmentally beneficial with the reduced packaging, lower shipping weight reducing the carbon footprint and a lack of wasted product.
The benefit to the consumer is that the lower cost can be passed on from the establishment. Rather than having to commit to a bottle or only a glass, the restaurant can offer various sizes to accommodate the needs of the diner.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS 10/4
The wine that you put into a keg will be a wine that is intended to be consumed right away… not aged. Surprisingly, this is the case for most wines produced these days. You’ll find mostly large volume, bulk style wines available in keg, not smaller boutique wines. There’s even an Arizona wine available in a keg… Arizona Stronghold Vineyards offers their Dala Cabernet, Dayden, Mangus and Tazi by tap. Some places to enjoy wine on tap around the Valley: Postino Wine Bar, Whole Foods Markets Wine & Beer Bar (Mayo & Chandler), Petite Maison, Rancho Pinot Grill and Blue Hound Kitchen and Province. The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” naming of a beer known simply as #9 and produced by the Magic Hat Brewery located in South Burlington, Vermont. While the folks at Magic Hat have never confirmed or denied anything about the name of their “Not Quite Pale Ale” flagship style, this is probably as good a guess as any.
Magic Hat is here! Dogs for dogging, hands for clapping… Birds for birding and fish for fishing… Them for themming and when for whamming… These lyrics are contained in one of the most unusual avant-garde songs ever performed by the Beatles, Revolution 9. It is also one of the songs that hastened the breakup of the legendary music group from Liverpool, as the influence of Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s then girlfriend, was heavily felt in this piece. Lennon’s writing partner Paul McCartney was said to have argued vehemently against including the track on their self-titled album which eventually became known to the general public as “The White Album.” The aural chaos created by repeated overdubbing and other vocal effects was Lennon’s vision of a revolution of sound. Originally begun as a coda to the more famous single, Revolution, the work took on a life of its own and was released separately as an eight minute track, the Beatles’ longest ever. The song took on a different infamy when Charles Manson discovered it and, despite the association of Helter Skelter with Manson and his “family”, took it to signal a beginning to the race war he was ready to fight.

What does any of this have to do with beer? Possibly nothing, but since 1994 people have speculated that this song was responsible for the
See, now we are talking craft beer. Not just any craft beer, but perhaps the most iconic brand never to have been sold in Arizona. While it doesn’t show up on any official lists due to its corporate ownership, Magic Hat is one of the ten largest craft breweries in the United States. They are not just about #9 either, Circus Boy is considered one of the best of the American made wheat beers, their IPAs on Tour series garners praise no matter which of the IPAs is available at any given time, and their seasonal releases are legendary. You might be getting a sense that all this is leading up to something…and it is. Because at 5:00 PM on October 4th, Papago Brewing will sell the first pint of #9 ever in Arizona. Now we’ve got your attention. That’s right, Magic Hat, the brand that captures the imagination of beer drinkers everywhere now is sold in Arizona. Who’s to know? Who was to know? More from Revolution 9, but at least we know the answer to this one. Everybody is to know. When Magic Hat hits the stage with their circus feel and eccentric ways, you can’t help but be aware. And they make some pretty fine beers as well. Let’s take a look at the lineup coming to our fair state, shall we? #9 – Already discussed above, this is the beer that people identify with Magic Hat. It is a beer that somewhat defies description. Classified by most as a fruit beer

because of the apricot added to it, the “Not Quite Pale Ale” is so much more. It is one of the top ranked fruit beers out there, but it’s not what we have come to expect in a fruit beer, no cloying sweetness, and no fruity assault on your taste buds. The apricot is there, but subtle. How does Magic Hat describe this beer? A Beer Cloaked in Secrecy An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A beer brewed clandestinely and given a name whose meaning is never revealed. Why #9? Why, indeed. A sort of dry, crisp, fruity, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there’s never been anything else quite like it. Fermented with our 150 year old strain of top-fermenting English yeast. This may not say a whole lot about the beer, but it sure helps understand a little more about this brewery. The only way to understand this beer is to try it…and even then you may never quite be able to figure it out.
human soul Our inky-black stout had a smooth, round palate with a dreamlike undercurrent of bittersweet chocolate. This dense liquid-silk summoned hope from hibernation and balanced winter’s endless white snows with a rich swirl of creamy black rapture. Again, these guys paint a great picture with words, but the beer matches the verbiage. It is an amazing beer and deserves to be tried. The Variety Packs – Another one we can’t always figure out. This twelve pack will always contain #9 and the current seasonal. Now they also throw in the current IPA on Tour release, which, when released in Arizona, will be Encore, a wheat IPA which was released as one of the brewery’s Odd Notion beers several years back. These beers are never given a formal name unless they somehow make it into production. This one returned for another appearance, hence the name. From
Circus Boy –Let’s just start with what Magic Hat says about this beer, Circus Boy — THE Hefeweizen Unfiltered and unfettered, Circus Boy is a unique and refreshing American-style Hefeweizen. Is he a who? Or a what? Or perhaps some of both? Be amazed by the flavorful haze of this wonderful wheat beer. Okay, that explains it a little bit, doesn’t it? What they don’t tell you is that this beer benefits from a hefty dose of lemongrass which brings a unique flavor, and once again confounds stylistic expectations. At 4.5% ABV, it is definitely a session beer, which is great because it goes perfectly with our Arizona weather. The Seasonal Releases – Magic Hat is known for mixing up their seasonal portfolio and this year marks the long awaited return of Heart of Darkness, a wonderful chocolate stout. Again, in the brewery’s own words, Filled with the howling of black dogs that haunt the long forgotten shadows of the

... continued from Page 38. Magic Hat, This unique surprise crosspollinates the classic American wheat beer with an American Pale Ale. What grows next is a fruitfully unfiltered union with a delightful hop aroma, a pleasant citrus hop flavor, and a beautifully balanced finish that leaves other ales hoppy green with springtime envy. This may sound similar to some of the recent releases of “White IPAs” that we have seen lately, except these guys did it several years ago. When you taste what the Apollo, Simcoe and Cascade hops do for the aroma and flavor of this beer you will be convinced. The final beer in the Variety Pack, called Winterland for
this season, is always some sort of specially produced beer. This year it is called Ravell, or as they describe it, An enormous play in one significant act, Ravell was a porter brewed with whole vanilla beans, once available whenever young William and father John deem it so. It helps to know that John Ravell was once the production manager at Magic Hat, and presumably William is his son…okay maybe it doesn’t help, but the more you know… Magic Hat has some other amazing brews in their portfolio including Single Chair, Roxy Rolles, Wacko, Fat Angel, Jinx and more. Perhaps we will see them in Arizona someday, although many of them are in the
Reclusive Rarities section of the portfolio. That’s okay because Heart of Darkness and Encore came back, so it is a pretty good bet we will see at least one curtain call from the others. In the meantime expect to have an amazing time at Papago on Thursday night, October 4th, enjoy the whole lineup currently available in Arizona, and take home some goodies from this classic American brewery. Afterwards, expect to see #9 pop up everywhere, including the growler stations at all of the Whole Foods stores, World of Beer and dozens of other places. This is the beer Arizona has been waiting for.
We’ll leave you with one more quote, you can decide if it is The Beatles or Magic Hat: Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9

GETTING STONED!
Hello again friends, today lets chat about Stone 16th Anniversary Double IPA. Every year about this time Stone brews up a little treat like this to commemorate another year of untraditional brewing. Being Stone, you can always count on this gem to be a monster of a beer and this year is no exception. Brewed with a large modicum of rye grain and Lemon Verbena, this one is a real treat. For those who are unaware, Lemon Verbena is a smallshrub whose leaves give a strong bitter flavor of; well you guessed it, lemon! By blending the spicy zest of rye grain with the zing of lemon and then adding copious amounts of Calypso and Amarillo hops this beer achieves an almost tropical essence not found in many other examples of the Double IPA style. Sitting at a stout 10% ABV. and 85 IBU’s, it certainly qualifies as a double but those nuances of fruit character balanced by a smooth easy malt profile make for a very drinkable brew with an almost summer time appeal.
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
How can one beer be so many things? Well for starters the entire team of brewers at stone “collaborated” on this brew. A bit of insight here, a great idea there followed by a bit of guidance from round the corner and voilà history is made! It seems only appropriate that everyone had a small say in how this beer turned out as it marks a very important time is history for a brewery that never seems to let off the gas. I guarantee, after one sip of this beautiful brew you will be standing in the mirror doing your best Greg (Koch) Face! Until next week, keep on drinkin on! October 4th, 2012 - October 10th, 2012

Kim’s Corner
Firewater released their first album in four years last week. International Orange!, mixed by Tamir Muksat of Balkan Beat Box, carries on from where their previous collaboration, The Golden Hour, took off, slipping across new borders into uncharted territory. Created in Istanbul and Tel Aviv during the 2011 Arab Spring, their latest release captures the frenetic pulse of a world in the state of flux. The songs tap into grooves as disparate as Turkish maqsoum, Punjabi bhangra, Jamaican ska, Greek rebetiko, classic punk and old-school mambo. Firewater will be at the Crescent Ballroom (308 N. 2nd Ave) on Thursday September 27th. Visit www.crescentphx.com for more details.

Ray Nitschke was the heart and soul of the great Packers defenses during Green Bay’s dynasty years of the 1960s, playing on five championship teams, including the first two Super Bowl winners. A real gentleman off the field, on game day he was a mean S.O.B. who seemed to truly enjoy hitting people. QB Bart Starr once called him a “classic example of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. A 3rd round draft pick in 1958 out of Illinois, the 6’ 3” 235 lb
middle linebacker earned either first or second-team all-league recognition seven times and made the Pro Bowl in 1964. He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978, his first year of eligibility. Post-retirement, his role as Bogdanski in the 1974 Burt Reynolds film The Longest Yard was particularly humorous and memorable.
