Boom” is the kind of comedy that gets wilder and wilder with each passing moment. The new feature film from writer/director Jordan Roberts benefits from a tremendously talented ensemble cast and satirical story in which the silly situations seem to stack on top of one another, adding insult to absurdity. Best of all, Roberts refuses to compromise comedy for half-hearted emotion as he, instead, focuses on elevating the entertainment value to hysterical heights. It is an outrageously humorous roller-coaster ride that resembles a snowball rolling down a hill, accumulating eccentric elements of amusement along the way. (Grade: B)
the first act sets the stage rather well, the second act is – unfortunately – a tonal mess. While trying to make the movie more palatable to the masses, screenwriter Chris Terrio and director Ben Affleck, weave comedy into an otherwise drastically dramatic story, cheapening the overall effect in the process. Having said that, though, it is still a strong motion picture that feels as important as it is entertaining. (Grade: B)
‘3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom’ The story of a boy (Charlie Hunnam), a girl (Lizzy Caplan), their sex tape, the boy’s brother (Chris O’Dowd) who has put it online, the transgender hacker (Ron Perlman) who may be able to pull it down, the psychotic and armed movie star father (Chris Noth) of the girl, and his pet pig. (PG-13 – 89 minutes) Stan: This latest entry into adult themed comedy has the usual over the top characterizations, comedic set-ups, and shock comedy moments. “3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom”does stay true to the central theme of ‘get the sex tape’ back at all costs, which keeps the story moving as central characters each get their moment to deliver the quirkiness of adult comedy.(Grade: C) Joseph: “3, 2, 1... ‘Broadway’s Finest’
‘Argo’ Ben Affleck plays a CIA exfiltration specialist who comes up with a risky plan – one so incredible that it could only happen in the movies – to get six Americans who taken refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador safely out Tehran. (R – 120 minutes) Joseph: The final act of “Argo” is tremendously tense; causing viewers to bite their fingernails down to their cuticles before digging whatever is left into their seats’ armrests. And while

Adam Storke, John Lavelle and Nick Cornish play three struggling men who, desperate for success, impersonate New York City undercover cops and chase down a notorious drug dealer in order to get the authentic material they need to create their own cutting edge police drama. (NR – 87 minutes) Joseph: “Broadway’s Finest” has a lot of potential – particularly because of the unparalleled passion that appears to have gone into its production – but one cannot shake the feeling that they are watching a cop dramedy that, like the characters in the film, is low-rent. Writer/ director Stephen Marro’s feature-
length. Granted, the first problem that that poses is one must really be interested in Vreeland to study her to such an extent. The other problem, though, is that filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland packs entirely too much information into one documentary, making it difficult for even the most enthusiastic viewers to keep up with all of the points that are introduced by the monotonous parade of talking heads. (Grade: F)
‘Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare’
‘Decoding Deepak’ Filmmaker Gotham Chopra embarks on a yearlong road trip with his father Deepak Chopra in an attempt to resolve the spiritual icon he is to the world vs. the real man known to his family, taking a closer look at the expansive spiritual empire he has built over his 25 year career that initially was conceived out of personal and spiritual dissatisfaction. (NR – 83 minutes) Joseph: “Decoding Deepak” may have actually been a good movie had Deepak Chopra helmed it himself. However, with his son Gotham at the wheel, the new documentary becomes little more than a young man’s attempt to come to terms with his own daddy issues. Needless to say, the result is not exactly the most entertaining experience for viewers – especially those who mistakenly go into it hoping that it will shed some light on the most pressing questions from the cosmos. The only question that Gotham is interested in is whether or not Deepak’s head can still fit through a doorway. (Grade: F)
Filmmakers Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke follow dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare, ‘Diana Vreeland: examining the powerful forces trying The Eye Has to Travel’ to maintain the status quo in an industry designed for quick fixes Filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland rather than prevention and for profitpresents an intimate portrait driven care rather than patient-driven and a vibrant celebration of her care. (PG-13 – 98 minutes) grandmother-in-law Diana Vreeland – one of the most influential women Stan: With health care prominently in of the twentieth century, an enduring the forefront as the November 2012 icon who has had a strong influence election nears, filmmakers Matthew on the course of fashion, beauty, Heineman and Susan Froemke publishing and culture. (PG-13 – 92 presents the core theme of a ‘broken’ minutes) health care system that pays by the number of patients treated, for profit Stan:With the voice of Diana not health medicine, with the theme Vreeland serving as the biographical of seeking ‘Escape Fire’ solutions guiding force, archival footage and as a metaphor that firefighters use photographs of historical events, to fight brush fires. With hard cold interviews with prominent persons facts presented, like the fact that the from fashion, the arts, film, and US is only one of two countries that literary worlds of the era from the allows prescription drug advertising 1930s-early 70s, filmmaker Lisa on TV, makes ‘Escape Fire’ ‘must see’ Immordino Vreeland not only viewing.(Grade: B) presents Diana Vreeland’s story. Various influences shaped the Joseph: Filmmakers Matthew direction of American culture, and Heineman and Susan Froemke start yes, the ‘counter-culture’ of the strong with their new documentary 60s-70s as the new direction took “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue hold and became mainstream. American Healthcare,” showing Compressing a biographical the impact that their issue has on presentation and historical look at a very human level. However, their our early cultural influences into 90 project quickly falls apart as they try minutes, is quite the challenge for a to take an overreaching approach to a filmmaker. (Grade: B) subject matter that simply cannot be summarized in one single cinematic Joseph: “Diana Vreeland: The Eye leap. The movie does not have enough Has to Travel” plays out like an of the personal stories that made entire semester of a college course in Michael Moore’s “Sicko” - which which fashion columnist/editor Diana essentially tackled the same topic Vreeland is discussed deeply and at AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Viggo Mortensen, who replaced Stuart Townsend at the last minute for Aragorn in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy (2001-2003), had no intention of doing the role until his son begged him to do it! albeit with much more success – feel important, immediate and above all intimate. (Grade: D)
‘Grave Encounters 2’ Richard Harmon plays a film student who, obsessed with “Grave Encounters,” researches the events and visits the real psychiatric hospital depicted in the movie only to find him face-to-face with unspeakable evil. (NR – 98 minutes) Joseph: “Grave Encounters 2” is a rare sequel that is actually better than its original. By retaining the many elements that made their 2011 horror flick feel real and therefore thrilling but tossing out the one that twisted time and – as a result – lost legitimacy, screenwriters The Vicious Brothers have stepped up the scares and given director John Poliquin the material he needed to take viewers on a terrifying found-footage rollercoaster ride. Best of all, this follow-up takes a Meta approach similar to that of “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2,” frighteningly blurring the lines between fact and fiction. (Grade: B)
‘Here Comes the Boom’ Kevin James plays a former collegiate wrestler and now apathetic biology teacher in a failing high school who begins to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter when cutbacks threaten to cancel the music program and lay off its teacher (Henry Winkler). length debut has its heart in the right place and it does a decent job of entertaining viewers. However, both the comedy and the action are relatively mild, making for a forgettable film in the end. Speaking of the end, after a modestly intriguing second act, the third collapses with a thud. (Grade: D)

Filming for ‘No Country for Old Men’(2007) was interrupted for a day due to a smoke cloud from the set of ‘There Will Be Blood’ (2007), which was also filming in the area. minutes) Joseph: The greatest compliment that one could ever give “Here Comes the Boom” is that you would never know that the new comedy is an offspring of Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions. Granted, the movie still suffers from essentially the same thing that ails the character portrayed by star and co-screenwriter Kevin James – its heart is in the right place but its brain has been beaten to point at which it is no longer usable. That is to say that the flick is far from an intelligent piece of filmmaking but its good intentions and inherent likability are overwhelming. (Grade: C)
‘How to Survive a Plague’ With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and 1990s, filmmaker David France tells the story of two coalitions – ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group) – whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. (NR – 109 minutes) Joseph: Those who may have been hoping that “How to Survive a Plague” was some horror movie
may be extremely disappointed. While filmmaker David France’s first feature-length project can, in some ways, be classified as a horror movie thanks to its themes, it is actually a documentary about the AIDS epidemic completely comprised of archival footage. Those who are still interested in the flick after having heard that will be just as disappointed to learn that it is, unfortunately, not a very good one – afflicted by France’s over-dramatizing a story that has the strength to speak for itself. (Grade: F)
‘Seven Psychopaths’ Colin Farrell plays a struggling screenwriter who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends (Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken) kidnap a gangster’s (Woody Harrelson) beloved Shih Tzu. (R – 109 minutes) Stan:From a very clever script with dialog from downright absurd to disturbingly quirky intuitive, and full of just as many eccentric eclectically off-center characters, writer/ director Martin McDonagh’s latest is masterful exploration of that ‘letgo alter ego’ in all of us. The central character’s (Colin Farrell) effort at normalcy to work on his screenplay, is a fun two hour ride as we early on realize that he is perhaps the only somewhat sane one among his milieu of close friends! (Grade: B+) Joseph: Anchored by a brilliantly bonkers performance from star Sam Rockwell, “Seven Psychopaths” is one of the cleverest crime comedies you will ever see. In fact, the second feature written and directed by Martin McDonagh – whose “In Bruges” was among my favorite films of 2008 – may be too clever for its own good, exercising self-awareness to a fault. And although the movie literally leaps off the crazy cliff after a wonderfully witty and fast-paced first

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released or about to be released in theaters.
Actress Lizzy Caplan (‘3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I thought that [the screenplay] was legitimately funny. That is pretty much what it was for me. It made me laugh when I was reading it and then, when I started to hear the people that they had attached to it, it sounded better and better to me because I knew that they were hiring actors who were no-joke powerhouses playing against type. “[The character I play] made a lot of sense to me for many reasons. Her life does not mirror my own but she is an adult child of an alcoholic. A child, basically, raised her so she is in like a role reversal with her father. She has also had terrible luck with men. She is probably a little stunted in her own maturity. I think that being forced to grow up really quickly can do that to people.
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
“She just seemed like this weird mix of having to be a grownup but also being this confused, scared little girl – a mess of psychological issues that I was drawn to like a moth to the flame. The issues that these people are dealing with are the opposite of funny, yet it is pulled off in such a way that you are really laughing at them. “It was more embarrassing to shoot some of the scenes in ‘3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom’ than it was in ‘Bachelorette.’ I get asked all of the time about the monologue that I give the guy on the plane in ‘Bachelorette.’ I was not really embarrassed during that because it is not me. It is a character that I am playing. “We are actors. We are paid to do this stuff. Granted, on ‘3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom,’ we are not paid very much to do this stuff. I mean, it is completely humiliating but I knew that I had Charlie [Hunnam] along for the ride. I was not alone and that sort of made me more secure about It.” – Lizzy Caplan
Filmmaker Chaz Lee (‘Copper Wind’) “I am proud to say we were burning 8 to 10 pages of script per day and that was an easy day for shooting! It was brutal, it was fast, and the thing was, it was 115 degrees outside, and we ate jerky, got beans on set, and we didn’t wash the wardrobe and unbelievable things happened. The longer the cast was on set, in the grungy wardrobe, eating the cowboy food, drinking from their canteens, and actually learning to strap their saddles on, and all of a sudden the cast ‘were’ those characters, and it was fantastic, character method acting, it was beautiful! “I am proud to say, we didn’t sustain not one injury, or an accident. We had a cast of over 85, we had well over
“We know that there’s been a lot of westerns shot throughout the state of Arizona over the years. Not one of them, and I challenge anybody to prove me wrong, and that is, not one western has shot in its entirety, from inception to completion using only Arizona talent in front of and behind the camera, from pre-production to post-production for the editing, all the way to the Arizona premiere, and given to the state of Arizona during the centennial year, it’s a first and we’re so very proud of our cast, crew, and the many, many persons behind the scene to make ‘Cotton Wind’ a reality! – Chaz Lee
Special Feature ‘Copper Wind’, an allArizona filmed western premieres! By Stan Robinson In ‘Copper Wind’, the year is 1881 and the lure of copper and gold throughout the untamed Arizona territory brings with it the development of savage and lawless boomtowns. Towns with names like ‘Goldfield’, ‘Tombstone’ and ‘Blood Creek’. With these boomtowns come early settlers who dream of a better life out West along with the ‘less desirable’ men who are more often on the run from their troubled pasts. The western, with a milieu of cinematic classics, firmly established its place among the genre of movies that defines the uniqueness of American cinema. Being born and
raised in Chicago, my connection the west was through the movies, with ‘Shane’ (1953) and ‘The Sons of Katie Elder’(1965) among my favorites. Moving to Phoenix, AZ in ‘98 afforded the opportunity to see first hand many of those locations depicted in so many western themed movies. And, as a film production person, the projects I worked on were city themed, ‘Cops & Robbers’ projects as we lovingly refer them to in the East. As with production, many places and locations are used to indicate the setting of one place, even states will double for one another in film production. Director Chaz Lee and his production team set out, and accomplished a monumental first - shooting a western entirely in the state of Arizona. ‘Copper Wind’ is that film! The completion of ‘Copper Wind’, with its world premiere on Friday October 12th 2012 at the renowned Herberger Theater in downtown Phoenix, garnered quite a few ‘first’
accomplishments. Those ‘firsts’ include the only full-length feature western to be filmed exclusively in Arizona from start to finish, produced and premier during Arizona’s centennial year, Arizona cast and crew, and prominent Arizona individuals in cameo roles including Cory McCloskey (FOX 10 news), Bill Thompson (Wallace and Ladmo show), Bobbi Jeen Olson (Arizona Country TV), Bob Roloff (the Arizona Duuude, Arizona character), Pat McMahon(KTAR FM), George Nelson (famous stuntman), and Patrick Heigl (Sanderson Lincoln), among others. The world premiere screening: 8pm Friday October 12, 2012 at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe, Phoenix, AZ- 602-2547399, Website:HerbergerTheater. org Admission is $30.00. Finding Food Trucks The Valley’s food truck culture has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years. Long gone is the notion that mealson-wheels are only served at construction sites from vehicles fondly nicknamed the Roach Coach.
But how to find a good food truck when you need one? The Phoenix Street Food Coalition has you covered. This organized collaboration of innovative street food purveyors is made up of food vendors, local businesses, food enthusiasts, and urban dwellers working together to help local businesses thrive. Together the group hosts events, promotes opportunities and most valuable to you…maintains a schedule of where to find your favorite truck and when.
The most effective way to find your favorite truck is of course to follow them on Facebook, Twitter and their web page. However, you may also try using the Truxmap app from your iPhone or computer. Many trucks participate in the regularly scheduled events that have been created by truck owners, and details can be found listed below the Phoenix Street Food Coalition calendar at www.
phxstreetfood.org. To find out what special events members will be attending, be sure to follow them @phxstreetfood on Facebook and Twitter. Go to www.LocalLily.com to search the best local restaurants, shopping, events and things to do. Follow me on Facebook/locallily and @locallily on Twitter

FINE WINE UNDER THE STARS Rhonni Moffitt, www. ArizonaVinesAndWines.com After attending a fun and entertaining evening at The Boulders for the Honey Festival, I became intrigued by a series of wine dinners that are featured at The Boulders Resort in Carefree, in North Phoenix. The dinner we attended was hosted by Benziger Wines and we enjoyed courses of creatively honey-influenced dishes prepared by chefs from around the country. The food was delicious and we enjoyed tasting the Benziger wines. We immediately signed up for the next dinner at the Boulders featuring Bodega Catena Zapata, one of our favorite Malbec producers in Argentina. You can find the Catena Malbec at Costco for a very competitive price (read: cheap!), and it’s a great wine to pair with food or even just to enjoy while wrapping up your day. The Catena dinner will be held on October 15th and guests will be seated in the Organic Garden at The Boulders Resort. It will be a magical evening for sure!
The five course meal will include: ●●Assorted Hors d’oeuvres paired with L’etoile Rose Catena Chardonnay, 2010served at the cocktail reception immediately prior. ●●Butter Poached Lobster Pirozhki with Lobster Corn Chowder, Meyer Lemon, and Fried Basil paired with Catena Alta Chardonnay, 2010 ●●Oxtail Cassoulet with Chistorra Sausage, Root Vegetables, Flageolet Beans paired with Catena Malbec 2009 ●●Pomegranate Sorbet ●●Roast Prime Rib Cap Steak with Catena Malbec Braised Endive, Wild Mushroom Eggplant Lasagna, and Shallot Black Pepper Jus paired with Catena Alta Malbec, 2009 ●●Fresh Fig and Almond Tart with a Malbec Reduction, and Vanilla Scented Clove Ice Cream paired with Catena Malbec 2010 Vista Flores
Authentic. Fresh. Local.
30 Wines for $30 Mon-Sat 11 am to Midnight, Sunday 10-2 brunch, 2 to Midnight. 4221 North 7th Ave, (602) 234-0333
The monthly wine dinners continue into November with a “Wines of the Rhone” dinner in November. Take advantage of the beautiful Arizona fall, and sip some great Argentinian vino under the stars. Cost is $95/ person. (480) 488-9009 x 1117

There are different terms people use when talking about wines and wine prices. To describe inexpensive wines, you might hear: beverage wines, Monday wines, starter wines, gateway wines. On the other end of the spectrum are premium, super-premium, luxury, special occasion and splurge wines – all intended to mean “more expensive.” The reality is – these terms all mean something different for each of us. A 28-year old who is just as much a wine enthusiast as a baby-boomer will generally not spend the same for a splurge wine.In the mind of the 50-something, he or she“has earned the right” to a higher priced splurge wine! Many of us were brought up to look for a good price/qualityrelationship and beyond that luxury goodswere considered wonderfultreats for special times. Our sensibilities and life priorities tend to dictate our mental comfort level when it comes to spending on discretionary things. You could just be starting out, you could be a parent with new priorities, or you may have already blown your dinner funds on the prime beef! The point is—everyone has choices to make. You’re out to buy and you want to get the best your budget will allow. Take heart – because with wine, there is something for everyone. I surely wouldn’t want my just-out-of college young relatives or anyone else for that matter, to feel they were uncool for seeking a bottle of wine for under $15. I’d be happy that they were gaining an interest in wine. Statistics show that 80% of all wine sold in the world is $10 or less a bottle and in Europe – land of historically important vineyards, it is even lower.
7131 WEST RAY ROAD SUITE 45 CHANDLER, AZ 85226
While I do know that you can get good wine at a reasonable price, there are however incremental jumps where spending a little more launches you into wines of much higher quality. Again, a great way to translate that for you personally is to keep trying. Wine tasting events – nowadays held more and more often, are your opportunity to try things out. Then you’ll be able to identify first-hand where your zone is on the relationship between wine prices and wine quality. Wine tasting party anyone?

Music & Wine: A Perfect Pairing
By Jennifer Manly, www. ArizonaVinesAndWines.com When we think of pairing wine, we usually think to pair it with a great
meal. A Pinot Grigio with a light fish entrée, or a Cabernet Sauvignon with prime steak, or a Moscato with a sweet dessert. The new trend though… pairing music and wine. They say music is good for the soul, and wine drinkers, well we all know that wine is good for the soul, so it only makes sense that they go handin-hand. Not only is it refreshing to hold your favorite glass of Chardonnay while nodding your head to the beat of the music, but research also showsthat the flavor of the wine begins to take on characteristics of the music they are listening to. Basically, music can change and enhance the taste of wine, who knew?
With that being said, some of Arizona’s greatest wineries are providing us with the perfect pairing. With the cool, fall nights among us, many of the wineries hold live music events with different bands every weekend! Here is a list of wineries that offer exceptional wines and live music. Go ahead and pack your bags and head up north for the weekend, you won’t be disappointed! OLD TOWN COTTONWOOD TASTING ROOMS

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 10/11
Rhonni Moffitt, www. ArizonaVinesAndWines.com For most of us, the name Inglenook inspires images of boxes of wine in the grocery store, maybe White Zinfandel or Chablis. Sweet wine. Very sweet wine. And very inexpensive. When I heard that Arrowhead Grill in Glendale was featuring an Inglenook Wine Dinner, honestly, I was shocked. I know Arrowhead Grill and their commitment to quality… prime seafood, the best cuts of meat and a great selection of thoughtfully procured wine. Seriously… an Inglenook Wine Dinner? What was I missing? I spoke with General Manager Eric Stoffers and was quickly enlightened. It turns out Inglenook is rewriting the script, so to speak. Filmmaker and winemaker, Francis Ford Coppola, purchased part of the Inglenook Estate in Napa over 40 years ago. Over the years he acquired the rest of the property, the winery and just recently took ownership of the Inglenook label. He’s rebranding his Rubicon brand with the Inglenook name. Once considered “Napa’s Premier Cru,” Inglenook was watered down when it was purchased and
resold to a couple of very large corporations. Their intention was to create high volume wines that could be sold cheap under a familiar label. They succeeded. With that success, they demolished any reputation Inglenook once carried. Coppola intends to change all of that. He’s starting with a 2009 Cask Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted in the same tradition as those wines from a half a century ago. Inglenook is rebranding itself and setting out on a tour of wine dinners to celebrate the debut of the new wines. Want to check it out for yourself? Arrowhead Grill’s dinner will be on October 22nd at a price of $100 per person. It’s limited to 45 people and will likely sell out very quickly. www.ArrowheadGrill.com

A CLOSER LOOK AT SOUR BEERS In case you haven’t noticed it, sour beers are becoming increasingly popular. While I doubt they will ever be as popular as IPAs, they are certainly picking up more than a reasonable amount of interest. People are discovering that, once you get past the first couple of sips, sour beers can be refreshing and adventurous. For that reason, I always refer to them as “three-sip” beers. The first sip you want to spit out, the second sip is a little more palatable… and finally by the third sip you are starting to appreciate the simple complexity of the beer. So, where did these beers come from and how did they get so popular? Recently, craft brewers have pushed the envelope by creating increasingly hoppy (bitter) beers that have challenged the taste receptors and been part of the backbone of the Extreme Beer movement. By now they have created all sorts of new flavors whether through dry hopping, wet hopping, continuous hopping, single hopping or whatever other type of hopping exists. Bitter is great and there is
probably plenty more to discover, but people looking for extreme flavor are looking to be challenged with something other than bitter. And that’s where sour beers are starting to make their move. Not that creating sour beers is a new concept… as we will see a couple of paragraphs down, it is old as beer itself. It’s also not brand new to craft brewers either. Tomme Arthur created a beer called Mo BettaBretta sometime around 2004 when he was at Pizza Port and I am sure that wasn’t the first of the American Wild Ales as they have come to be known. However this one sticks with me in particular because of a symposium I attended in 2005 at Papago Brewing Company in Scottsdale Arizona. The event was a brewers’ roundtable featuring Tomme, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, Adam Avery of Avery Brewing, Derek Osborne from BJ’s Brewery, Andy Ingram from Four Peaks and Jim Strelau from Oak Creek Brewing. The topic was extreme beers and each brewer featured some outrageously strong beer. Except for Tomme Arthur.Tomme brought the aforementioned Mo BettaBretta and made the point that extreme beers didn’t need to be high ABV hop bombs. A simple 6% ABV beer could

still be considered extreme because extreme is about flavor and nothing else. The beer was mouth puckering sour and it was refreshing and it was perfect. I had tried sour beers before, but after this one, I was hooked. As a side note, this beer was brewed collaboratively with Peter Bouckaert of New Belgium Brewing in Colorado. Peter had come to New Belgium by way of Rodenbach, perhaps one of the best producers of sour style beers. This beer has recently been re-released both by Lost Abbey and by New Belgium as part of their Lips of Faith Series Anyway, let’s see if we can’t dig in to the history of sour beer just a little, figure out where the styles came from and then end on a high note. Not likely, but here we go. There are a variety of styles that get rolled up under the term “sour” and it may not be entirely fair to stick them all with the same label, but at some level the similarities in these styles outweigh the differences. There is so much going on with these beers that perhaps the descriptor sour may not even be appropriate. Jeff Sparrow, author of a book called Wild Brews, had originally titled it “Sour

Beers.” But as he explored the Belgian brewing traditions that have contributed so much to the topic, he changed his mind. “I always say that this beer isn’t sour—it’s wild. I say that because, if all a beer was, was sour, who’s going to like it? There’s so much more going on.” What styles fall in to this category? There are lambics and their attendant variations made with fruit or by blending old and young in to Gueuze; there are the sometimes vinegar like West Flanders Sour Red Ales; the East Flanders Brown Ales, sometimes called Oud Bruins; the “champagne of the North,” as Napoleon Bonaparte dubbed the German Berliner Weiss and even the classic Pierre Celis Belgian Witbier. To understand these beers it helps to understand a little about the “bugs” that make them. There are four basic types and hundreds of variations. Brettanomyces is wild yeast that produces flavors and aromas that are best described as funky. Other descriptors like horse blanket, bandaid and sweat don’t sound quite as appealing…but they are accurate. The other three most common bugs are lactobacillus, pediococcus and acetobacter. But wait you say, struggling to recall your high school biology, aren’t those last three some kind of bacteria? Of course they are and they provide absolutely wonderful flavors to these amazing beers. The first two produce lactic acid which is the same thing in sour milk, but in beer, lactic acid takes on more of a sweet and sour characteristic. The latter produces acetic acid which is responsible for the vinegar like flavors in some beers. These can all combine to produce esters which
are a complicated chemical compound. All you need to know is that they provide some incredible complexity in a beer. Lambics are produced in very few parts of Belgium and are typically done in a cobweb filled, dirty appearing brewery, sometimes with windows to throw open to the fields outside. The reason for all this is to capture the natural wild yeasts surrounding the area in an open fermentation process allowing them to bring the unique flavors of that particular region to the beer. Young and old lambics can be blended to produce gueuze and fruit can be added to produce a fruit lambic. In the case of fruit lambics, raspberry (Framboise) and cherry (Kriek) are the most common, but other fruits can be used. Beware of certain lambics that don’t have the funk you would expect from this process. These “coca cola” lambics, as they are called typically add Acesulfame-K, a type of saccharine, to artificially sweeten the beer to make it more appealing to mass consumption. This is loosely based on an old Belgian tradition of serving the lambic with two sugar cubes, allowing the consumer to determine whether or not to sweeten the beer and exactly how much. The Flemish Sour Reds are wonderfully complex beers that rely on the accumulation of bugs in the wooden vessels they are stored in to produce both lactic and acetic notes to the beer. At renowned Rodenbach, brewmaster Rudi Ghequire defines the acidification of the beer as “a late Middle Ages conservation method” that prevented spoilage by pushing pH levels too low for dangerous bacteria to

thrive, as older, more acidic beer was mixed with younger batches. Foeders, the giant oaken tuns where the beer matures, vary enough from one to another that several different foeders are tapped for the final blend. Oud Bruin beers rely on the introduction of the bugs directly and are fermented in stainless steel to help control the final product a little better. These beers tend to be sweeter than their red counterparts with flavors of caramel, toffee and dark fruit. The final product is very malty with undertones of sherry. Berliner Weisses are different in that they are typically made from unboiledwort (unfermented beer) which is even more conducive to the lactic acid producing bugs. Berliner Weisses can be out of this world tart and have been compared to incredibly tart lemonade. These beers can be absolutely refreshing on a hot day. The Berlin brewers took notice of some people’s aversion to too sour of a beer, but instead of sugar cubes as with the lambics, Berliner Weisses are frequently served with one of two syrups. A himbeer or raspberry syrup to provide a sweeter fruit counterpart to the sour beer, or a woodruff syrup which is an herb grown in Germany. The woodruff syrup is more woodsy, but takes advantage of the natural sweetness of woodruff. Finally, the Belgian Wit…Pierre Celis, who recently passed away in his late eighties, is credited with reviving this style at a number of breweries both in Belgium and the United

States. But most people think of this beer as just a nice unfiltered wheat beer with a little orange peel and coriander. In reality, according to legendary beer author, Randy Mosher…well let him tell you in his own words. “Pierre Celis was pretty generous with details about his beer, but I understand he had a locked room in the brewery in Texas where only he had the key, and he did some sort of lactic fermentation in there. It’s a minor detail, but it’s an important part of the overall flavor profile of those white beers to have a kind of a bright, palate-cleansing acidity that helps balance the creamy, milkshaky texture.”

Well there you have it, a not so brief primer on sour beers, a little bit of digression on my part and more perfectly useless information unless of course you like sour beers. One final thought, we spoke earlier of hoppy beers and the bitterness that has pushed the boundaries for the past ten years or so and the trend towards other flavors, like sour. Well the best example that I know of that blends these two concepts is a beer from New Belgium Brewing called Le Terroir. This is a traditionally brewed sour ale right up to the point where they dry hop it (adding hops during the fermentation process) giving it a flavor like no other beer you have had before. I think I might even have one lurking in my beer cellar‌and I deserve something special for finishing this article.

…. It Was All About The Beer! BY “KING” JAMES SWANN
Hello again friends, today lets recap a crazy night at last Saturday’s TASTE Of Chandler Culinary Festival in downtown Chandler, Arizona. I realize the focus here was on the food but this night’s experience was far more entertaining than just sampling great cuisine, as there was a tent dedicated to Craft Beer &Wine. It was my job on this occasion to be the “Beer Expert” and see that everybody got a little background information on each of the beers they were drinking and what should be had next.
BEER! SECTION
TASTE OF CHANDLER CULINARY FESTIVAL
A little back ground history first; Taste of Chandler was founded by Landon Evans and HDE Entertainment in 2009 with a focus of bringing Chandler’s best cuisine, beer, wine and spirits together in one place and time. Every year has brought a sellout crowd in record numbers as Chandler’s population are simply starving (and thirsty) for this kind of culture. Let me say first hand that the place was packed! Now having said so, many patrons were focusing on PAIRING Food and Beer. One of the best pairings of the evening was Uinta’s BABA Black Lager and the BBQ pulled pork from Bourbon Jack’s. Another great pairing came in the form of San Tan Brewing Company’s own Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese with Hopshock IPA. Who can forget the classic coupling of Pittsburg Willy’s Freddie G Dog with Full Sail Amber? My favorite union of the evening was the Spaten Opitmator Dopple Bock and the fare of Pearl Sushi Lounge. Heaven on earth and proof that there is indeed a god with great taste!

Kim’s Corner
Firewater released their first album in four years last week. International Orange!, mixed by Tamir Muksat of Balkan Beat Box, carries on from where their previous collaboration, The Golden Hour, took off, slipping across new borders into uncharted territory. Created in Istanbul and Tel Aviv during the 2011 Arab Spring, their latest release captures the frenetic pulse of a world in the state of flux. The songs tap into grooves as disparate as Turkish maqsoum, Punjabi bhangra, Jamaican ska, Greek rebetiko, classic punk and old-school mambo. Firewater will be at the Crescent Ballroom (308 N. 2nd Ave) on Thursday September 27th. Visit www.crescentphx.com for more details.

LATIN GRAMMY AWARD WINNER PEPE AGUILAR Friday, October 19th at Celebrity Theatre
Coming to the Valley of the Sun courtesy of Latino Vibe 95.1 FM is A Night of Mariachi starring Latin Grammy Award Winner Pepe Aguilar at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 19th at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. Congratulations to Pepe Aguilar on his recent Latin Grammy Award nomination for Más de un Camino in the Regional Mexican category. The Latin Grammy Awards take place on November 15th in Las Vegas, where the 9-time Latin Grammy nominee will be one of the show’s featured performers. Aguilar’s Más de un Camino is the sequel to Negociare con Ia Pena. The 2012 release features seven ranchero tracks including the first single “Maldito.” The album was produced in its entirety by Aguilar. The Mexican singer has performed traditional rancheras with mariachi
accompaniment; he has recorded albums with brassy banda instrumentation, and of course, he has recorded plenty of sleek Latin pop. Stylistically, this is something that sets him apart from his iconic father, the late singer/actor Don Antonio Aguilar (who was very much an old-school mariachi/ranchera
traditionalist). On July 26, 2012, Aguilar received the 2,474th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was placed next to the star of his beloved Mexican icon father. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets ($55, $75 and $105) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.
celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext.1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located just four blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

X360, PS3/$59.99/Oct. 16 James Bond has seen his fair share of adventure, but as our story opens, we find our hero unconscious and drifting in the water. His thoughts race back to past missions, where evil geniuses threatened the world, exotic locations became the backdrop for high-speed chases, and beautiful girls offered both passion and peril. Now you must relive these moments while attempting to survive your current predicament. “007 Legends” is a first-person shooter that places you in the very expensive shoes of James Bond as he shoots, sneaks and charms his way through his most iconic missions, including those from the upcoming film “Skyfall.” While most protagonists require a variety of guns to save the day, our dashing spy has an arsenal filled with gadgets, weapons and vehicles that have been specifically designed with survival in mind. Thanks to its sleek gameplay, clever storytelling and solid multiplayer, “007 Legends” is shaping up to be the game that fans have been hoping for.

#7 Deacon Jones This once obscure 14th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams revolutionized the position of defensive end. The “Secretary of Defense” as he was known, anchored the left side of the Rams famed Fearsome Foursome defensive line for 11 years before being traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1972. Exceptionally fast and agile for his size, the imposing 6’ 5” 272 lb. Jones developed into an outstanding pass rusher, delivering punishing hits on opposing QBs. He coined the term
“quarterback sack”, and if sacks had been an officially recorded statistic during his career, his unofficial total of 173 ½ was tops by a huge margin at the time of his retirement in 1974. Today that total would put him at third on the all-time list. Jones also invented and perfected the headslap maneuver, a practice that was widely emulated by others during his time but has since been outlawed by the league. Jones amassed eight Pro Bowl selections and five first-team all-pro honors during his career. He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1980.
