ARTS! SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT PRESENTS MUSICAL
14-17 at the SCC Performing Arts Center, 9000 E. Chaparral Road in Scottsdale. The musical, which just finished its Broadway revival run in June, will be performed by 10-member student cast from SCC. The performances are free and open to the public (donations are welcomed and will benefit the SCC Music Department programs).
GODSPELL November 14-17th
Student cast retells timeless hit with modern music and comic antics The Scottsdale Community College Music Department presents Godspell, a musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak, on Nov.
Godspell has become a timeless hit revisited often because of the joyful music and comic antics used to tell the parables of the New Testament. It is about building communities and how communities can go forward by sharing joy, music and stories with
others. The retelling is interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. The SCC ensemble endeavors to tell these stories in lighthearted and imaginative ways. All cast members will be on stage virtually the entire production. The production is directed by Beth Livingston-Hakes and Polly Chapman. Godspell opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals, including a 2011 revival which played on Broadway from October 13, 2011 to June 24, 2012.

ingredient to the physicality of horror. (Grade: C-) Joseph: “The Bay” very well may be the worst found-footage film I have ever seen. And that comment is coming from someone who actually loves the genre. The primary problem with director Barry Levinson’s new horror flick is that the footage that makes up the movie is one massive mess of scenes that are edited together with seemingly no narrative whatsoever. Moreover, Levinson appears to have shot too little footage as the same sequences are replayed over and over as if to help viewers to connect the nonexistent dots when it is really only to pad the motion picture’s runtime. (Grade: F)
Aaron Estes’s story is all over the place and its gags are entirely too far out there, causing whatever the filmmaker was trying to achieve with his new dramedy to become completely lost in the mix. It is mildly amusing thanks to some solid performances (not to mention a small nod to star Tobey Maguire’s former alter-ego Spider-Man) but it is also annoying and not the least bit connected to anything even remotely meaningful. (Grade: D)

‘The Bay’ Kether Donohue plays a reporter who has emerged with footage revealing a cover-up and an unimaginable killer – a mysterious parasitic outbreak. Told from the perspective of those who were there and saw what happened, an ecological disaster unfolds over 24 hours through people’s cell phone footage, 911 calls and web cams. (R – 84 minutes) Stan:Admirable in the attempt, with past films utilizing the ‘You are there’ technique, most notably 2008s ‘Cloverfield’ of conveying authenticity and non fabricated presentation of an unknown,‘The Bay’ is a roller coaster ride of high’s and low’s. The basic premise is sound and just the right stuff of the horror film genre, the uneven pacing of the story however, takes away those ‘highs’ of tension building as shots lingered too long slowing the theme down to a mere crawl. For a story of a mysterious ‘Outbreak’, and yes I’ve delivered an intentional pun and reference to the 1995 film, ‘The Bay’ falls short on psychologically stirring emotionswhich is the prime supportive

‘Detropia’
‘The Details’ Tobey Maguire plays a man who, after a family of hungry raccoons ransacks his perfectly manicured backyard, becomes single-mindedly obsessed with eradicating the pests by any means necessary. Soon the relentless rodents are not merely uprooting the lawn, but also overturning the man and his wife’s (Elizabeth Banks) entire bourgeois existence. (R – 91 minutes) Joseph: Although the synopsis for “The Details” makes the movie sound like a suburban “Caddyshack,” it bears no resemblance whatsoever to the comedy classic. Instead, writer/director Jacob
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady chronicle the city of Detroit and its woes, which are emblematic of the collapse of the U.S. manufacturing base. (NR – 90 minutes) Joseph: “Detropia” has admirable intentions but it still does not belong on the big screen. The new documentary from filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady would be much better suited as a special on public television, where viewers welcome informative entertainment but do not necessarily expect any new insights or well-thought-out solutions to problems posed. That is to say that the flick is little more than a travelogue, albeit one that takes viewers to a location that they are unlikely to be interested in visiting. Ewing and Grady snag some striking scenes but a movie needs much more than just visual poetry. (Grade: D)

‘The Flat’ While clearing out his recently deceased grandmother’s Tel Aviv flat that she and her husband shared for decades since immigrating from Nazi Germany, documentary filmmaker Arnon Goldfinger uncovers clues that seem to point to a greater mystery and soon a complicated family history unfolds before his camera. (NR – 97 minutes)
‘Electoral Dysfunction’ After discovering that the right to vote is missing from the U.S. Constitution, political humorist Mo Rocca sets out on a road trip to see how voting works – and does not work – in America. (NR – 87 minutes) Joseph: “Electoral Dysfunction” is a unique political documentary in that it does not take sides and instead chooses an issue that both Democrats and Republicans can agree upon – getting out the vote. However, while the timely topic is analyzed in a warm and welcoming fashion courtesy of “tour-guide” Mo Rocca, filmmakers David Deschamps, Leslie D. Farrell and Bennett Singer have essentially made a movie that appeals exclusively to listeners of NPR, who are less likely to nod off as a result of the dry, straight-forward approach that is more appropriate for the CBS Sunday Morning News than a feature-length film. (Grade: D)
Joseph: “The Flat” seems interesting at first but, unfortunately, it ultimately suffers from the age-old adage that everything short of 100 percent proof is only speculation. That is to say what initially appears to be a shocking discovery turns out to be nothing but a bunch of assumptions. In reality, there is any number of explanations that one could come up with to explain the clues uncovered by documentary filmmaker Arnon Goldfinger. Having said that, history buffs and those who enjoy examining the complex mysteries of human nature may take something significant away from the experience. Others, though, should probably pass. (Grade: D)
‘Flight’ Denzel Washington plays a seasoned airline pilot who is hailed as a hero after miraculously crash landing his plane and saving nearly every soul on board during a mid-air catastrophe. However, as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault and what really happened on the plane. (R – 138 minutes) Stan: Director Robert Zemeckis’ latest has story lines on multi-levels with thrilling action sequences, a solid character portrayal by Oscar®

Joseph: “Flight” is a promising motion picture but, unfortunately, it is occasionally a little upside-down in terms of tone. Director Robert Zemeckis’ new flick – his first live-action effort since 2000’s “Cast Away” - has some exceptional dramatic sequences, such as a heart-in-your-stomach mid-air catastrophe and an edge-of-your-seat NTSB hearing. However, its comedic sequences are completely out of place and even demerit the movie as a whole. Add to that an unnecessarily long runtime and an even more unnecessary subplot involving an unlikeable character portrayed by actress Kelly Reilly and the film is ultimately a mild disappointment despite still being somewhat entertaining. (Grade: C)
‘Holy Motors’ From dawn to dusk, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar (Denis Lavant), a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, and family man... (R – 87 minutes) Stan: One of the most eclectic films I’ve screened in quite some time. ‘Holy Motors’ with minimal dialogue, and yes it is in French with English subtitles, while following a day in the life of a man who’s usual day of work has him traveling between multiple parallel lives, is a visual odyssey, and its abstract captivating cinematic style, is a ‘mind-bender’ indeed, right down to the last scene of stretch limousines in a parking garage at night talking to each other about how ‘their’ day went!(Grade: B)
‘Little Red Wagon’ Chandler Canterbury plays an 8-yearold boy who sets out to help homeless children in America in the wake of Hurricane Charley by walking across the country and must overcome bureaucrats and blisters to capture the hearts of his
fractured family and the entire nation. (PG – 104 minutes) Stan: The underlying theme of the docudrama manages to hold firm as the amazing true story of 8-year-oldZach Bonnergets a bit muddled with the additional story line and characters. Zach’s ‘red wagon’ becomes that symbol of compassion and action as we realize that if more adultsadopted the fervor and acted on their convictions as the 8-year boy, a tremendous impact could be made on behalf of homeless children everywhere.(Grade: C) Joseph: With “Little Red Wagon,” you get two movies in one. Unfortunately, only one of said movies is actually worth watching and it is the one that director David Anspaugh and screenwriter Patrick Sheane Duncan have reduced to a small albeit affecting subplot starring Frances O’Connor and Dylan Matzke, who give great performances. The film’s focus, on the other hand, comes across as completely corny with Chandler Canterbury, Anna Gunn and Daveigh Chase showing off their atrocious acting chops, ruining an otherwise goodintentioned family drama that was based on the true story of one boy’s exceptional determination to make a difference. (Grade: D)
‘The Man with the Iron Fists’* A blacksmith (RZA) who has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction, channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. Also starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu. (R – 95 minutes) *Not made available for review. ‘Portrait of Wally’ Filmmaker Andrew Shea traces the history of artist Egon Schiele’s iconic image – from Schiele’s gesture of affection toward his young lover, to the theft of the painting from a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life, to the post-war confusion and subterfuge that evoke The Third Man, to its surprise resurfacing on loan to Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art. (NR – 90 minutes)
Joseph: “Portrait of Wally” reveals that even inanimate objects can experience quite a complex journey over their course of their lifetime. Unfortunately, though, filmmaker Andrew Shea fails to focus on that aspect in his new documentary and makes the movie into some sort of conspiracy theory investigation, interviewing enough talking heads to make your head spin and never coming to any kind of conclusion that is even remotely satisfying. Having said this, art snobs are likely to be the only audiences who are truly interested in this flick, which features a subject so narrow that they, too, will become bored by the end. (Grade: F)
‘The Sessions’ John Hawkes plays a man who, at age 38, is determined to lose his virginity despite being confined to an iron lung. With the help of his therapist (Helen Hunt) and the guidance of his priest (William H. Macy), he sets out to make his dream a reality. (R – 98 minutes) Stan: Succeeding in conveying the thought most of us know deep down inside that persons with disabilities ultimately face identical life challenges and experiences, writer/director Ben Lewin masterfully guides the cast of John Hawkes’ moving performance from an iron lung, the religious aspects by William H. Macy’s character, and an intuitively moving performance by Helen Hunt as the therapist, to present a very effective ‘feel good’ movie on living life and playing the hand each of us are dealt. (Grade: B) Joseph: “The Sessions” is a tremendously touching and remarkably rewarding cinematic experience. Writer/ director Ben Lewin’s dramedy, which is based on the autobiographical writings of journalist/poet Mark O’Brien, demonstrates that disabled persons deal with much more than just what one might think. However, it also demonstrates that, like anything else in life, all of that can be overcome with a little help from the human spirit. In fact, even a fraction of the film’s resonance is twice if not triple that of most movies. Simply said, this flick makes you feel good to be alive – regardless of your circumstances. (Grade: B)

India’s movie industry, ‘Bollywood’, is the largest in the world producing over eight hundred movies a year. Hollywood only produces half as many in a year.
‘Wreck-It Ralph’ John C. Reilly voices a video game villain who, tired of playing the role of a bad guy, takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove that he has got what it takes to be a hero. (PG – 100 minutes) Stan: Reminded of one of my favorite television shows titled ‘ReBoot’ that featured the base story of life inside of a computer hard drive, ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ is delightfully clever as it takes us to life inside video arcade games. As with the series ‘ReBoot’, I’ve never thought of my Mac Mini in the same way since, so too is the same thought as I pass the popular game parlors that are prevalentin the malls and entertainment venues with their multitude of video and computer games. And, the short titled ‘Paperman’ that runs first, is priceless! (Grade: B) Joseph: “Wreck-It Ralph” is clever, heartfelt and above all fun. However, halfway through, one may forget that they are watching an animated adventure set within the world of arcade video games instead of one set in Candyland. Disney’s latest non-Pixar effort is the closest that the studio has come to achieving Pixar perfection but it still falls slightly short of it by staying in one game – “Sugar Rush” – for the majority of the movie rather than extensively exploring its gimmick by jumping from game to game. Having said

Actor Jody Thompson (‘The Bay’) By Joseph J. This is a real pedestrian in a car driving up. We had a dead body on the side of the road, he comes pulling up and just had a panicked look on his face. I did not break character at all. He asked, ‘What’s going on?’ and I said, ‘We have got it under control. Just move along, son.’ He may to this day still think that he pulled up on a dead body.” –

Animated Monty Python movie to debut on EPIX
By Joseph J. Airdo “There is a reason that my first film is a martial arts film. Maybe my second one will be, too. I am not sure. But my first one had to be because that I started in my whole career by assimilating martial arts music with American ideas – which, for me, is hip hop and urban life. And I think that there is a bright future in the genre because ‘Kill Bill’ sparked a huge fire that still has some sparks in it. If we kindle it, we can have one of these movies every year or two. This movie is a test to see if the genre is still a good investment for studios.” – RZA

It will make its television debut 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 on EPIX.

What is Table Wine? By Nathan Brugnone, Nathan@ AZWineMakers.com Wine culture is full of idiomatic language. When I first began learning about wine, I would encounter terms and phrases that were not necessarily selfexplanatory. One such phrase is “table wine.” In the United States, table wine denotes a still wine (e.g. not fizzy or sparkling) that has not been fortified. Fortified wines, like Port from Portugal and Marsala from Sicily, contain added liquor, raising the ABV (alcohol by volume) and making them suitable for longterm aging and storage—typically sweet wines made to be enjoyed as aperitifs or dessert. By U.S. law, table wines must not exceed 14% ABV, but can be made from red, white or a blend of grapes.
In the European Union, table wines are everyday quaffing wines, served during an afternoon meal or with dinner. Indeed, this is becoming more of the norm in wine destinations around the U.S. as well, including Arizona winegrowing regions. Many Arizona wineries get their start by creating table wines, accessible to many in the financial and flavor sense.
Authentic. Fresh. Local.
30 Wines for $30
Two Arizona table wines thathave just hit the scene come from The Grand Canyon Winery. This new family-owned operation is offering a white blend, primarily Rousanne (a French white), Chenin Blanc, and Malvasia Bianca. Their red table wine is also a blend, consisting of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Pfeffer. Keep an eye out for this one in the greater Phoenix area!

Recently, I wrote about the basics of the harvest season: pick the grapes, process and crush them, and let the fermentation begin. Often not talked about is the meticulous laboratory work being performed by the winemaking team. In fact, many winemakers have scientific backgrounds. On most winery tours, visitors never really see the lab – we are shown the barrels and bottles and of course the tasting rooms. But what about the beakers, pH meters and calibration equipment? The work that goes on in the lab this time of the year is fascinating and affects how the finished wine will taste.

The winemaking team must analyze samples from the tanks while the grapes are actively fermenting. They do this numerous times throughout the day, every day for the duration of active fermentation. In the lab, the team keeps detailed logs on the changing aspects of the grapes. What are they looking for? In simple terms: sugar content, acidity, and pH levels. More specifically, they taste the juice for its flavor components—fruit and essences that spring forth while the grapes are bubbling away. This process reminds me of my greatgrandmother standing over a huge pot of sauce on the stovetop, tasting it repeatedly to determine if the tomatoes were too acidic, too sweet, or cooking away too quickly. Only she would know what adjustments to make—we just knew in the end we would enjoy a sauce that was perfectly balanced! The winemaking team is also analyzing the alcohol content. If it is too high, it may block the completion of the fermentation resulting in highly-alcoholic wines. People often tell me that many red wines taste the same to them and they wonder why that is. Part of the answer could be the wines have a high alcohol content, which makes it difficult to detect acidity, nice tannins and fruit aromas as easily as in balanced wines. Wines that are high in alcohol feel weighty and can numb your palate, taking away your ability to enjoy the flavors of the wine. So you can see that making a fine, wellbalanced and interesting wine requires a skilled winemaking team and a lot of diligence in the lab. As with much of life – there are no shortcuts! RECORD HARVEST FOR ARIZONA WINEGROWERS THIS YEAR! Provided by Arizona Wine Growers Association After years of hail damage and late spring/early fall frosts, Arizona grape growers are thrilled that they had an uneventful year (for the most part) and have harvested more tonnage than any previous year! With yields up and grape quality above average, the harvest left many wineries scrambling to find more barrels, tanks and workers to bring in their crop. “It is a nice problem to be having this year after several years of
devastating crop loss due to weather,” Arizona’s Verde Valley region reported said Curt Dunham, winemaker/owner their best harvest ever from their 12-year-old vineyard. According to of Lawrence Dunham Vineyards. Florian Wahl, Oak Creek’s winemaker, There was one particular late spring “We harvested our grapes with Brix frost in April that affected many of (sugar levels) at nearly 26 plus, the vineyards in Willcox and Sonoita, which we anticipate to produce rich, disturbing mostly the white wine smooth wines with nice alcohol.” Kief varietals. Even so, the winemakers Manning, winemaker at Kief-Joshua are very happy overall! Harvest was Vineyards in Elgin, said, “The cool even a little early due to the increased summer temperatures coupled with monsoon moisture. plenty of rain has resulted in a hearty harvest this year.” Oak Creek Vineyards in Northern However, historically, wine grape acreage has not kept up with the demand, sending Arizona wineries to purchase grapes from outside of the state. Peggy Fiandaca, President of the Arizona Wine Growers Association, said, “The 2012 harvest will help
Arizona producers begin to keep up with demand. The opportunities of the Arizona wine industry are great, and there is no reason that the wine industry cannot be the next billion dollar wine region like Washington and Oregon.” Arizona wines are increasingly achieving high ratings, powerful media attention and more respect from the food and wine community. Be on the lookout for the 2012 vintage wines starting later this year; white wines should be released by next summer! For more information, check out www. ArizonaWine.org.

By Rhonni Moffitt, ArizonaVinesAndWines.com On October 24th, Quench Fine Wine, a local distributor, put on their annual industry tasting. Held at the Montelucia’s Grand Ballroom, it was a room full of hundreds of wines from wineries across the nation, as well as some local favorites. A mid-sized distributor, Quench doesn’t represent large volume-driven wineries but instead focuses on smaller, boutique wineries with an emphasis on quality and value. I enjoyed hearing winemaker Jason Barrette’s story. He’s been a winemaker at legendary Penfold’s, since December 2005, and now, in his off-season, he’s making wine at Margerum Wine Company in Santa Ynez (near Santa Barbara). Jason’s hands were stained purple and calloused from the hard work of this current harvest. Not a man to rest on his laurels, he also throws in a third harvest from time-to-time by heading to France and working at Chene Bleu. On this day he was pouring wines from Margerum and Happy Canyon Vineyards. If you ever see the Margerum M5, a Rhone blend, be sure to grab a bottle.
Christophe Hedges of Hedges Family Estate explained their concept of “Score Revolution,” touting a bumper sticker that says “I don’t hang out with people who drink 100 point wine.” He believes that a wine should reflect the soil it was grown in,that by trying to attain a certain rating, the winemaker may likely remove any traces of terroir, making the wines similar and boring. So Christophe is helming a movement to remove the quantification of wines by a score. At the entrance, I was thrilled to see a wall of Arizona wine! Samples from Dos CabezasWineWorks, SandReckoner, Page Springs Cellars, Arizona Stronghold and Caduceus were popular with all attendees. When I chatted with Quench Wine Division President, Dan Fairris, he explained that carrying the Arizona products is very important to the company. They don’t support local at the expense of quality, but carefully choose which wineries to represent and help them find the next level of exposure. Next time you attend an event, don’t just eat the food or taste the wine. Talk to the people. Learn their story. It makes everything taste better!

SanTan Rail Slide – Winter Wonderland BY “KING” JAMES SWANN
Hello there Friends – thank you for all the comments concerning all the wonderful places I had the chance to visit while in Denver. I really encourage you to contact me with any new venues you may visit while on your own travels – as I am only one King James with so many beers and pubs to visit! This week let’s talk about SanTan Rail Slide Imperial Spiced Ale, which debuts on November 1st at the brewery and across the state as the first seasonal canned ale! How exciting is this? Does this mean I get to endure The Polar Express with a can of delicious brew and not feel guilty that I can’t be at the pub! OH LORD – That’s awesome – it almost makes me want to cry. Sniff, Sniff. Okay, enough of that let’s talk shop. First, this seasonal comes in at a deliciously nice 7.1% abv and by the mouth feel, would never guess it. It’s a beautifully balanced mix of malt and hops – coming in at low 35IBU’s which lets the malt shine. As I crack open this winter wonder, the brew gently flows out a lovely amber brown and at that first important sip comes hints of ginger, cinnamon and is that licorice? I think so! For those who love SanTan’s Winter Warmer, this is definitely a very nice precursor and will win over your palate on its own merits – but hey; You can take this to go in its very own min keg which for me, fresh wins out every time.
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
As always, feel free to connect with me at kingjamesswann@gmail.com. I love hearing your feedback. I encourage you this week to explore the myriad of seasonal beers from pumpkin to spiced, as many have found, some of these winter brews are purely magic! CHEERS!

Firewater released their first album in four years last week. International Orange!, mixed by Tamir Muksat of Balkan Beat Box, carries on from where their previous collaboration, The Golden Hour, took off, slipping across new borders into uncharted territory. Created in Istanbul and Tel Aviv during the 2011 Arab Spring, their latest release captures the frenetic pulse of a world in the state of flux. The songs tap into grooves as disparate as Turkish maqsoum, Punjabi bhangra, Jamaican ska, Greek rebetiko, classic punk and old-school mambo. Firewater will be at the Crescent Ballroom (308 N. 2nd Ave) on Thursday September 27th. Visit www.crescentphx.com for more details.

1) “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”
You know you are going places when no less than Alison Krauss sings your praises before your debut album releases, and when you hear Angel Snow’s eponymous full-length debut, you will understand what all the fuss is about. From the mid-tempo shuffler “Civil Things” to the acoustic ditty “These Days,” the album takes you on a deep, insightful journey through the joys and trials of broken people who are trying to figure life out. With rich, resonant vocals that are reminiscent of a more soulful Brandi Carlile, Snow captivates with her broad range, and the languid performance she gives on the hypnotic mandola-led “Coals and Water” will give you chills. This mesmerizing debut will ensnare you.
¡Viva La Vida! Día De Los Muertos Festival at ALAC
2) She married 007.
Vital, Anberlin’s seventh studio album relies heavily on the same marriage of aggressive modern rock and New Wave-style sounds their last few albums have used. “Orpheum” is a prime example of this combination working well, as is “Self-Starter,” despite the kitschy background vocals. “Little Tyrants” explodes like a chorus of machine gun fire as a reminder that the band can flat-out rock when they want to, and “Desires” employs singer Stephen Christian’s trademark shouts as the guitars and drums go off like bombs all around him. In addition to relationship songs like “Intentions” and “Modern Age,” the epic closer “God, Drugs & Sex”—featuring a heavenly appearance by Christie DuPree— echoes Christian’s struggle to have faith and a relationship in the 21st Century. Vital is a vital entry in the band’s discography.
