Reviewers’ Roundtable

Donnie Yen plays a village craftsman who comes under investigation by a detective (Takeshi Kaneshiro) after single-handedly saving a shopkeeper’s life. Convinced that the craftsman’s martial arts mastery belies a hidden history of training by one of the region’s vicious clans, the detective doggedly pursues the shy hero and draws the attention of China’s criminal underworld in the process. (R – 120 minutes)

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s movie review segment every Friday morning during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien”, 6am9am, on NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM and read his full reviews and interviews exclusively online at Examiner. com.

Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. Airdo, 28, is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

‘The Collection’* Josh Stewart plays a man who, having escaped the vicious grips of a serial killer, is blackmailed to rescue an innocent girl (Emma Fitzpatrick) from a booby-trapped warehouse. (R – 81 minutes)

their project is. Somehow, this inside joke of a film about an East Coast hipster and his unfunny friends have found a way into your local art house. While slightly humorous at times and always highly inappropriate, the viewer cannot help but think that this is a vanity project made for a small group of followers reminiscing about the Adult Swim series on cable with the same stars. (Grade: D)

Randy: This flick from Hong Kong set in a rural village in 1917 delivers the perfect mix of action, suspense and mystery. The film opens with a slight bit of comedy and we meet the protagonist and his family. The story then jumps right into the action. An investigation unfolds shortly thereafter, but never a dull moment is to be had. Beautifully shot and perfectly choreographed in a majestic setting. I should note that Internet research shows the running time as 114 minutes, yet the version I watched was only 97. I’m not sure if something was cut from the initial overseas release. (Grade: B)

‘Dragon’*

‘The Comedy’ Tim Heidecker plays a Williamsburg guy who, indifferent to the notion of inheriting his father’s estate, passes the time with his friends, playing games of mock sincerity and irreverence. (NR - 90 minutes) Joseph: Movies like this play well at film festivals. Rarely do they get a theatrical run. At the festival, the director and his/her fellow filmmakers gather and chat about how wonderful

tale – which is one of authentic albeit complex emotions that will both move you and leave you with plenty to think about afterward – is worth experiencing. In spite of an extremely explicit sequence that, quite frankly, has no place being in the motion picture, this drama is a charming study of the oddity known as intergenerational bonding. (Grade: B)

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Malcolm McDowell and Jaime King play a small-town sheriff and deputy, respectively, on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. (R – 94 minutes) Joseph: “Silent Night” definitely has the 80’s slasher vibe down to a T. However, is that really a good thing? Director Steven C. Miller’s new holiday horror flick – a loose reboot of 1984’s “Silent Night, Deadly Night,” which spawned four sequels – is entertaining enough but, by adhering to a certain style and refusing to break out of a very restricting box, it is not quite as fun or as festive as it could have been with a bit more imagination. Still, it is always nice to see Santa giving naughty boys and girls what they truly deserve. Hint: It’s not coal. (Grader: C)

Dree Hemingway plays a 21-year-old girl who forms an unlikely friendship with an 85-year-old woman (Besedka Johnson) after having discovered a hidden stash of money inside an object at her yard sale. (NR – 105 minutes) Randy: This is easily one of the best films of 2012 and features two of the finest performances delivered on screen in some time. Not only are the performances stellar, but also come from a relative newcomer (Dree Hemingway) and an 85-year old non-actress (Besedka Johnson). Shot in a rather bland area of the San Fernando Valley, director Sean Baker has crafted a true indie masterpiece. Humor and genuine emotion starkly contrast a rather graphic sex scene, but Baker’s choice adequately reflects the contrasts in the characters’ own lives. (Grade: A) Joseph: “Starlet” is strange in that it tells a story that would likely be entirely different if it were about 99 percent of the population. However, co-writer/director Sean Baker has found a character that basically breaks the mold and therefore her

The main thing is, you want to engineer a movie that did not require or lean on the first. The first movie was modestly scaled, and it was a tiny horror sect of the horror movies in the sense that it’s pretty lean, pretty fast, but we were able to develop these characters.

“One being Josh Stewart who didArkin and was given 15 minutes of precious screen time to develop his backstory, to learn about his family, learn about himself, and then his skill set as a thief. The other character was our villain, the collector, hence the name of the movie, who was a cypher of evil. A gentleman who was made of shadow that struck like a knife, and when those two skill sets go to war inside of a farmhouse, it was a joy to depict.

Co-Writer/Director Marcus Dunstan (‘The Collection’) By Stan Robinson “The first time I directed was also something that I co-wrote with Patrick Melton called ‘The Collector’, the first movie, this film is a sequel. I had read there was a rule that you kind of have to be writer or be a participant in about three movies before you might take a shot at directing one so you can be immersed

“With ‘The Collection’ we’re harkening back to a type of filmmaking that hasn’t been around for a while, that is a horror/thriller with action that has not been depicted since the late 70s early 80s in the format of super 35mm anamorphic film, with performances that are grounded very much in the real world, with a villain we’ve had an entire film to set up, with a hero the audience wants to see again, and

She’s not underdressed, she doesn’t run to the top floor of the haunted house when she should run out the front door, and when we turn on the terror machine, these characters bring a movie to life that even without a villain, would be riveting. By the very fact that we have a man of shadow, we have a film that is not only a sequel, but if the first film was a pup, ‘The Collection’ is the wolf. It opens on November 30th, the real ‘Black Friday’!” – Marcus Dunstan

Director Steven C. Miller (‘Silent Night’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I just love the idea of taking something wholesome and destroying it. There is something fun about that concept and I think that as a horror filmmaker you are always trying to take what is safe, sort of twist it around and make it scary for the audience. Christmas is the ultimate playground. It is a really fun atmosphere and it gives you a lot of room to play with in terms of colors and lights.

me in right away. And it has always drew me in since I was a kid. I was a huge fan of these kinds of movies, having watched them since I was 9 or 10 years old. Watching these crazy movies is something that really resonated with me so it is a really huge honor for me to be able to make something like this.

Filmmaker and comedian Kevin Smith returns to EPIX 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 with an all new special - “Jay and Silent Bob Go Down Under” taped in front of a sell out audience in Sydney, Australia. Joined by his notorious cohort Jason Mewes, the off-the-cuff and uncensored hour is filled with cautionary tales about everything from Australian children’s television to mythical Australian drop bears.

“I wanted to do something that was a little more dirty and a little more punk rock. I am a huge fan of 80’s slasher films so I thought that this was a good opportunity to introduce a new masked killer on a holiday. I do not think that we have seen Santa in a mask before. I have always loved those Santas in store windows that look really creepy so our Santa had that same sort of look – that plastic face. “At one point, we had 150 Santas that were all dressed up doing the parade. That was really fun to see and be a part of. It was a great spectacle – especially because we did not shoot the movie at Christmastime. To recreate Christmas in a small little town that was getting ready for summer was a fun experience for everyone.” – Steven C. Miller

“When I think of Christmas, I think about how much fun we have with presents, gift-giving, parties and decorations. The most meaningful part of Christmas to me is remembering Christ’s birth and celebrating our savior. But there is also this special thing that comes about during Christmastime. the culture. The one thing about moonshiner culture that is really amazing is that it exists today in a very similar way to how it existed back then. So we were able to talk to people that still keep this culture alive and these people very well could have been in the movie. Actually, if we had portrayed our characters with the life that these guys brought, I think that people would think we were over-the-top and unrealistic. But that was really helpful. Remember, It’s a proven fact Laughing daily is beneficial to your health! Phil Scudella – Publisher Rodney was sitting quietly reading his paper when his wife walked up behind him and whacked him on the head with a rolled-up magazine. “What the hell was that for?” he asked. “That was for the piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name Mary Lou written on it,” she replied. “Wait” he pleaded. “Yesterday, when I went to the track, Mary Lou was the name of a horse a friend told to bet on.” “Oh, honey…. I’m sorry,” she said. “I should have known there was a good explanation.” That weekend, Rodney was watching his favorite football team on TV when she walked up and hit him in the back of his head again, this time with a skillet that knocked him out. When he came to, he asked, “What was that for?” he pleaded. “Oh…Your horse just called!”

As we continue to celebrate our 20th Anniversary year - Here are some classic jokes from past issue of Arizona Player Magazine. More of our reader’s favorites to make you smile or better yet, bust out in laughter!

“Hmm,” says the interviewer. “Well, what would you say to five weeks’ vacation, 8 paid holidays, full medical and dental, a retirement fund with company matching 50 percent of salary, and a company car leased every two years - say, a Porsche?” The young engineer gapes and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” “Yeah,” the interviewer laughed, “but you started it!” ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Bob and his wife Cathy are in the shower together when the doorbell rings. Cathy puts on a robe and goes down to answer the door. In walks her husband’s friend Ben. She tells him Bob’s in the shower and for him to come back later. Instead, Ben who has always lusted after Cathy quietly whispers, “I have $400 in my pocket I’ll give it to you’ll just open the top of your robe.” Cathy is offended, but really needs the money, and opens the top of her robe, and lets him have a quick peek. Ben gives her the $400, as she opens the door for him to leave, but he says, “Look, I have another $400 in my other pocket. I’ll give it to you if you open your robe totally and let me gaze at your beautiful body.” Now Cathy is really mortified, but again, needs the money, so she opens her robe and gives him get a quick look, takes the $400 lets him out and heads back upstairs. She gets back in the shower with her husband, feeling a bit guilty.

“Who was that?” Bob asks. “Oh, that was just Ben,” she answers. “Ben?” her husband replies in disgust, “That jerk promised to stop by last week to drop off the $800 he owes me!”

LIVE IRISH ROCK BANDS Thurs –Sat From 9:30pm New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie recently made news when, among other recent events, he met his musical Buddy Valastro idol, Bruce Springsteen. This week, another son of the Garden State gets to meet a childhood icon as Lou Ferrigno (“The Incredible Hulk”) guest stars on the Monday, Dec. 3, episode of TLC’s hit competition series “Cake Boss: Next Great Baker.” “One of my favorite shows growing up was ‘The Hulk,’ so meeting him was like meeting a hero,” says host and judge Buddy Valastro. “And Lou totally lived up to it. He did the Hulk pose with me and everything. We had a great time, and he was such a gentleman. He actually was with us for a long time, like eight hours, so we got to hang out and talk, and I learned a lot more about his personal life. He was an awesome guy.”

There are numerous ways to experiment with different wines and to build your wine collection and wine clubs are one of the most over-looked, yet highly enjoyable avenues available. Wine clubs come in many different varieties. For example, a winery-direct club is one where they periodically send you selections from their winery. Wine retailer clubs are usually national wine retailers who have deep wine inventories. In these clubs, you may be able join a club with a theme such as Italian wines, white wines only, or big styled wines like cabernets. In other wine clubs, an expert staff member hand-selects an assortment for your monthly shipment as a member in their club.

How do wine clubs work? Simply put, you sign up for a subscription and the club agrees to ship to you wine at regular intervals, usually monthly. A quick internet search will yield a wide-range of wine clubs and surely you will find one that meets your needs in the areas of quality, variety and budget. The most critical traits in choosing a wine club are customer service and the quality of the wine selections that you end up with. You are putting your wine choices into their hands – so they’d better be talented! I’ve been a member of many wine clubs over the years. One of the most gratifying was through a California winery. I always admired whoever the staff member was that made the choices for the monthly shipment. They were so creative and had a nice “wow” factor that pleasantly surprised me. I never knew what I was going to get, but it was always distinctive. One month itwould be magnums, the next month an assortment of half bottles, after that, older vintages, and on and on. I loved hosting dinner parties around these wines and sharing them with friends. As I write this, I can’t even remember why I’m not a member anymore. Some might think it is a big financial commitment to join a wine club, but they exist in many price ranges. The benefit is convenience, high quality and something interesting. If it’s not, you won’t be signing up again. Just look for proven customer service, outstanding selections, excellent prices and discounts for members, I think you’ll be pleased!

CAVALIA ODYSSEO BRINGS MULTIMEDIA EQUESTRIAN AND ACROBATIC SPECTACULAR TO SCOTTSDALE December 19, 2012 – January 6, 2013 For showtimes, please visit www. cavalia.net. Ticket prices range from $29.50-$149.50. VIP packages include dinner and exclusive tours of the stables and a meet and greet with artists are $129.50-$259.50. Tickets can be purchased online at www.cavalia.net or by calling 1-866999-8111. The Cavalia Odysseo White Big Top will be located at 18777 N Scottsdale Rd. at the 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale, AZ. Cavalia Facts:

The internationally acclaimed Cavalia pushes the limits of live entertainment with its newest production that is now touring the globe, Cavalia Odysseo. Created by one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia Odysseo is a theatrical experience, an ode to horse and man that marries the equestrian arts, awe inspiring acrobatics and high-tech theatrical effects. In the coming weeks the Scottsdale skyline will transform as the 10-story White Big Top and 8 additional tents that comprise the Cavalia Odysseo village are erected. Under the pristine and luxurious tent, a dream-like world will transport audiences around the world as 53 horses and an international cast of 50 artists play and demonstrate their intimate bond. The 15,000 square-foot stage features a real carousel and a magically appearing 80,000 gallon lake in front of a stunning video backdrop the size of 3 IMAX screens. Cavalia Odysseo is a two-hour dream that will move the heart and touch the soul.

32

Audiences do not need to know anything about horses or riding to enjoy Cavalia Odysseo. From the start

of the show, the horses capture the heart. Ten horses freely play on stage by having a pleasurable roll on the ground or mischievously tease one another with playful nips to the back. The show builds through a variety of equestrian numbers including jumping, dressage, carousel, trick, stunt, Roman and Cossack riding. Acrobats and aerialists thrill the crowd with their high speed flipping, bouncing and flying. An acrobatic troupe from West Africa’s Guinea flips so fast that the eye can barely keep up with them. Just as amazing are the acrobats on urban stilts who take part in a joyous, obstacle-jumping competition with both the Guineans and horses, and the graceful aerialists who, like angels, fly above the stage in a gorgeous silks number. The original production of Cavalia has been touring the world since 2003. In 2009, Phoenix audiences and critics welcomed the show to Scottsdale for a multiple week run. The company’s second offering Cavalia Odysseo began touring the world in the fall of 2011 and has visited Quebec, Miami, Atlanta, Toronto and Monterrey, Mexico.

The holiday season has certain entertainment staples it just wouldn’t be the holidays without. Among them: Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch … and Ralphie.

Peter Billingsley

The wide-eyed child who literally dreams of finding a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree – despite the famous warning, “You’ll shoot your eye out” – spends a lot of time in homes at the yuletide, thanks especially to the nowtraditional 24-hour marathon TBS gives “A Christmas Story” from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. star of Peter Billingsley, who’s since become quite active behind the cameras. He often teams with close friend Vince Vaughn, having been the director of the movie “Couples Retreat” and an executive producer of such films as “Four Christmases” and the TBS sitcom “Sullivan & Son,” which returns next year for Season 2. Even with all his recent activity, the now-41-year-old Billingsley maintains a warm spot in his heart for “A Christmas Story,” as do so many others. “There’s a very loyal fan base for that movie,” he acknowledges. “Those who like it know it and quote it, and it’s a part of the family tradition of

Billingsley tends to tune in himself at some point during the TBS marathon. “First of all, I apologize for being in people’s houses for 24 hours,” he says. “Now having ‘Sullivan & Son’ on the network, I feel like I’ve already been in the TBS family for as long as the marathon of ‘A Christmas Story’ has been going, so it’s nice to be doing that job with them. “The movie usually does wind up being on at my house, because we do Christmas with a lot of family and a lot of kids. And they like it, not just because their uncle is in it, but they enjoy it just on that level of being a tradition. It’s been enough years that it seems kind of normal when it’s on the kitchen TV, and you just hear it when you’re walking through to get some more coffee.”

Holiday Movie Releases “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” (Dec. 14)

“Les Miserables” (Dec. 25)

“Jack Reacher” (Dec. 21)

“Parental Guidance” (Dec. 25)

The classic Victor Hugo story of Inspector Javert’s relentless pursuit of desperate thief Jean Valjean is no stranger to the screen, but this is the long-awaited film adaptation of Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s stage musical. Co-star (and newlywed) Anne Hathaway has the perfect movie showcase for the singing ability she’s demonstrated more than once at the Oscars. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe play the central enemies, with Helena Bonham Carter and Amanda Seyfried also on board.

Any fan of “The Lord of the Rings” has known this is coming, thanks in no small part to the ongoing involvement of director Peter Jackson. This J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired start to another screen trilogy casts Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, who meets and conquers his match in Gollum (“Rings” returnee Andy Serkis) in the course of a fantastic adventure. Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving and Ian McKellen are among other “Rings” alumni back as well.

Tom Cruise had a big Christmas last year with “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” and he and Paramount Pictures are hoping for a repeat with what’s envisioned as the first chapter of a franchise. The title character, created by Lee Child for a book series, is a military-police investigator whose probe of a multiple homicide turns increasingly dangerous. A big ace the film has is oscar-winning director-screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (“The Usual Suspects”).

“The Apartment” (1960):

Encompassing a holiday season, director Billy Wilder’s great, Oscarwinning comedy-drama culminates on New Year’s Eve … after upwardly mobile office drone C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) has lent his shoulder to his crush, lovelorn elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), to cry on. Without spilling too many beans, it can be said anyone who stays with the film will find its finale irresistible.

“When Harry Met Sally …” (1989): One of the most

popular New Year’s Eve scenes in movie history caps director Rob Reiner and writer Nora Ephron’s cozy, entertaining comedy that poses whether friends – in this case, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan’s title characters – can become lovers and still stay friends. And Reiner’s mother delivers the fall-out-of-your-chair line, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

New Holiday Shows

Finding Mrs. Claus (12/2, Lifetime) Las Vegas isn’t the first location that comes to mind when you think of Christmas, but it’s the setting for this new holiday tale. Oscar winner Mira Sorvino (“Mighty Aphrodite”) has the title role of Santa’s spouse, who’s feeling neglected by her husband (Will Sasso, “The Three Stooges”) as the big night approaches. She decides to visit Vegas – not to gamble but to help make a Christmas wish come true for a little girl who lives there. A repentant Santa follows her there, and what happens in Vegas puts Christmas in jeopardy.

Help for the Holidays (12/9, Hallmark Channel) Summer Glau stars in this new fantasy as Christine, one of Santa’s elves who loves Christmas but is bored with the North Pole life. When Santa receives an urgent wish from a youngster (Mason Cook), he puts Christine on the case. The boy and his sister (Izabela Vidovic) want a real family Christmas with their parents (Eva La Rue, Dan Gauthier), who are too busy running a holiday store to pay attention to their kids. As their new nanny, Christine sets out to effect an attitude adjustment.

She starts her own group, the Mistle-Tones, and challenges the other ensemble to a sing-off on Christmas Eve. Along the way, she gains some new friends, a new love and a new appreciation for the season in this tuneful new tale.

story for a different time, they learned the importance of social gatherings… celebrations. Throughout history, celebratory events have called for beer. Whether Saint Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, or the Honeymoon celebration of a newly married couple, beer and similar beverages have been at the forefront. Since the holiday season is a time for celebration, it only makes sense that special beers arise to help us enjoy the season.

Bringing Out the Best in Beer

Believe it or not, the holiday season is once again upon us. We’ve had our share of great summer beers, and just finished up enjoying all the wonderful Oktoberfest, Pumpkin and the rest of the fuller bodied autumn beers, and now comes winter. No matter how much we enjoy all the other beers there is something about the winter season that brings out the best in beer. Beer is an amazing beverage. To some extent it predates civilization itself, having been discovered during a period when men were nomadic hunter-gatherers. They moved from place to place taking advantage of whatever food was available in their

Perhaps the most common style of winter beer is the “Winter Warmer.” This term comes from the British brewing tradition of producing a winter beer that was stronger than their regular beer, with a fuller flavor. Because the English serve their ales at cellar temperatures, rather than ice cold, they actually do serve to warm up a chilled consumer. This style has

evolved and most people assign the term to any darker winter seasonal. Many brewers have taken to adding Continued On Page 66

Hello beer lovers, today let’s address an issue that must be attended to with a matter of urgency, the UNTAPPD Mentality. While Untappd.com is a great tool for beer geeks young and old, the idea behind why this popular social media device is so handy seems to be losing its sheen.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY… FOR YOUR BEER SCENE

As an instrument for tracking beers you have imbibed, the system can’t be beat. Throw in the fact that you can make your friends on FACEBOOK aware of your accomplishments and this little program seems to be a gift from heaven…. EXCEPT. The notion that once you have “cataloged” a beer it’s time to move on to greener pastures must stop! I can’t tell you how many times I have noticed people on their mobile Untappd applications looking to see if they have “collected” a beer before they order. If they have indeed tried even a taste, then it’s on to the next. GET A CLUE. If you can’t remember having the beer how could you possibly remember how it tastes? FACT: Every brewery, no matter the size, funds all of their special activities by selling their Core Brands, meaning that if you want to see more specialty beer, then be willing to pony up for the everyday labels more often. People often ask why we are seeing smaller amounts of the rare stuff and why there are many we never see at all. The answer is simple; we are so concerned with beers we haven’t tried that we forget to continue supporting our favorites. This is not a sprint people, it’s a marathon!

Your homework for the month: go back through your list and try every beer again. I’ll bet you’ll rediscover some old friends and even score them differently this time around. Untappd.com reminds you to Drink Responsibly, I couldn’t agree more. November 29th, 2012 - December 5th, 2012

the time, these beers stop selling on December 26th. So the key is to determine if sales should continue beyond Christmas or not. If so, perhaps a more general winter name is appropriate, such as Winter Ale, or the newly named Rail Slide from SanTan Brewing. Anything that keeps the beer alive on the shelf into February works and many breweries take that direction.

spices to their winter beers. Flavors derived from cinnamon, nutmeg, even spruce tips all serve to richen the flavor and add even more to the seasonality of the beer. But there are plenty of ways to celebrate without the Winter Warmer. Many breweries release their year round beers in specialty packaging. It is a great time of year to give the gift of beer, so why not pick up a package of four beers with a couple of specialty glasses? How about a 1.5 liter bottle of your recipient’s favorite Belgian, or be really daring and go for a 3 or even 6 liter container. Who knows, with either option, you’ve set yourself up to share some great beer, and get credit for being a great gift giver. Winter Warmers are not the only beers that brewers ratchet up this time of year. A lot of brewers look to be different by tackling an Imperial version of a style. Look for an increase in Imperial IPAs, Russian Imperial Stouts and Imperial Porters in the next two months. There are even several Imperial Pilsners and Wits out there. Barley Wines, Olde Ales and other big beers also come out to play during the holidays, and especially in January and February.

Which brings us to an interesting dilemma…what to name the special beer? There are so many great holiday themed names like Santa’s Little Helper or Mistletoe Bliss, or even the very plain and somewhat ubiquitous Christmas Ale. The problem is that most of November 29th, 2012 - December 5th, 2012

So, what’s the moral of this story? As usual, the moral is to enjoy great beer. But if you are looking for a deeper meaning, let’s give it a try. Winter beers are brewed to take advantage of the richer foods we tend to eat during the holidays. The bigger, bolder flavors match up nicely with the foods. The spices added to many of these beers also serve to enhance the holiday experience by providing smells and flavors associated with the season. Finally, they serve as a sort of rallying point for the celebrations that take place throughout the season. Because after all, it is the people that make the season, and whenever you can find a reason to enjoy a great beer with family, or close friends, or even casual acquaintances, it just makes it that much better. So go out and find your favorite seasonal beers this year…and enjoy them with others. It will make for a special season.
