COVER STORY - PHOENIX TEQUILA FEST 12

Phoenix Tequila Fest Returns to US Airways Center December 15th & 16th / 1 pm – 5 pm From the Aztec Goddess Mayahuel to the revolutionary Pancho Villa, tequila has a long history that millions continue to celebrate. And as the holidays get in full swing, thousands of Phoenicians will converge downtown to sample hundreds of reposados, añejos and blancos at the annual Phoenix Tequila Fest at US Airways Center, December 15 & 16. The all-inclusive admission enables lovers to enjoy all day free sampling of the finest tequilas, margaritas and Mexican food from all of the different booths throughout the Pavilion and Plaza. Highlights of this year’s Fest include tastings of the 2012 Cruz Tequila Margarita Challenge Winning Entry, Canteen Modern Tequila’s Rhubarb Margarita. Bar Manager Rich Rush of the popular Tempe bar was awarded the honor last month, selected over all other competitors as the Best of the Best. Also featured will be the preview of Bonita Tequila, the new silver tequila owned by American actor and rapper Xzibit. Known for such films as 8 Mile and hosting MTV’s Pimp My Ride, Xzibit is the newest celebrity to join the tequila craze. From Sammy Hagar, Carlos Santana, Vince Neal and Roger Clyne, a wide assortment of celebri-

And as if the tequila and food wasn’t enough to make this the biggest party in the Valley, all-day live entertainment will be held on the center stage, from rock to mariachi bands.

ties have become huge tequila fans proving that the spirit is a global phenomenon. Other tequilas featured include Cruz Tequila, Camarena (official tequila of the Phoenix Suns) KAH Tequila with their distinct skull shaped bottles inspired by the Day of the Dead, Tequila Semental, Agave Underground, Tres Amigos, El Caudillo and their delicious organic tequila Quinta de Gomez to name a few. The vast majority of tequilas featured have won national and international Spirit competitions, with many Gold and Silver medal award winners sampling at the Fest. All tequilas featured at the Phoenix Tequila Fest are made from 100% Blue Agave, harvested in various regions of Jalisco, Mexico, one of the few States in Mexico where the Agave plant is grown and tequila is distilled.

Attendees at the Fest will be able to compare the flavors of the regions to distinguish the differences of agave grown on the slopes of volcanos or the lowlands. Each tequila brand can explain their unique distillation process (some distilling as many as 5 times) to the ageing process in French or white oak barrels. Be sure to ask about the history of the tequila, many of the brands have been making tequila for hundreds of years, since the days of the Conquistadors. To help balance all the flowing tequilas and margaritas, the Festival will also have free food from many of the Valley’s top Mexican restaurants. Los Reyes de la Torta featured on Travel Channel’s Man Vs Food will be serving up their amazing tortas, alongside the amazing dishes from Sandbar, America’s Taco Shop and Si Señor Restaurants among many others.

“We can’t believe how much this event has grown in the past four years,” says organizer Juan Elias. “When we initially started this, people said, ‘Holidays are such a busy season, maybe people won’t have time to spend a day away from their shopping lists to come downtown. But we said, “Look holidays can be some of the most stressful times of the whole year….there is a real NEED to offer a fun break. Get away from shopping malls and wrapping and spend a couple hours enjoying the Arizona weather, great tequilas and food. Get away from the stress... and enjoy life. It’s our philosophy: Tequila, it’s like duct tape… it fixes damn near everything.” For tickets and information on the Phoenix Tequila Fest, visit www.phoenixtequilafest.com Phoenix Tequila Fest: December 15 & 16, 2012, 1 pm – 5 pm US Airways Center 200 E. TWIST OF THE MAGI

A holiday farce with music staged as a “live” 1947 radio broadcast

Meet the cast and crew of KTAS as they broadcast their annual Holiday show live in front of a studio audience. Return to 1947 for an authentic radio adaptation of O’Henry’s classic tale, “Gift of the Magi.” Laugh out loud at the antics of this band of disgruntled actors, their reticent stage manager, the frantic sound effects technician, a whacky musical trio, a delinquent (and inebriated) Shakespearean Prima Donna, a jealous Italian femme fatale and a host of other hilarious characters. Watch this classic tale of holiday love and generosity as it unfolds through a series of comic twists and turns. Be a part of the studio audience as O’Henry’s heroine, Della, trades her beautiful hair to buy a Christmas gift for her devoted young husband. Tortured by seller’s remorse, Della befriends an unlikely Yiddish Yenta, and the two women embark on a series of zany adventures

to attempt to recover the lost locks. Twist of the Magi is musically complimented by the “Twisted Sisters”, a trio of talented tunesters a la the Andrews Sisters, who will entertain the audience with songs from the 40s and holiday favorites, and perform radio ads of the era. Musical direction and piano accompaniment is provided by Andrea Jill Higgins, a veteran Valley musical director and composer of last season’s popular production of the original musical, Babe, An Olympian Musical. Theatre Artists Studio presents Twist of the Magi, a family show suitable for audience members age 10 and above, through December 16. Performances run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 General Admission, $10 for students age 25 and under and $15 for groups of 10 or more, seniors age 65 and over and members of the military (both active and retired). To obtain tickets, call 602-765-0120 or visit www. thestudiophx.org.

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘The Matchmaker’* ‘Lay the Favorite’ Rebecca Hall plays a Las Vegas cocktail waitress who falls in with a sports gambler (Bruce Willis) who swoons for her as she proves to be something of a gambling prodigy, earning the initial ire of his wife (Catherine Zeta Jones). (R – 94 minutes) Joseph: After having seen “Lay the Favorite,” the question that will most likely come to your mind might be, “how in the world did so many talented actors become involved in such a tedious, obnoxious and unfunny comedy?” The most logical answer is that somebody must have lost a bet. The new motion picture – an adaptation of Beth Raymer’s memoir – from director Stephen Frears is a largely lifeless affair. The worst thing about it, though, is the performance given by actress

December 6th, 2012 - December 12th, 2012

Tuval Shafir plays a teenage boy who, during the summer of 1968, goes to work for a matchmaker (Adir Miller) who has survived the Holocaust and both their lives are forever altered. (NR – 118 minutes) *Not reviewed.

‘Playing for Keeps’* Gerard Butler plays a former sports star who, having fallen on hard times, starts coaching his son’s soccer team as a way to get his life together. His attempts to become an adult are met with challenges from the attractive soccer moms (Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman and Catherine Zeta-Jones) who pursue him at every turn. (PG-13 – 95 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Kacey Mottet Klein plays a boy who supports his older sister (Léa Seydoux) by stealing from the wealthy guests of a Swiss ski resort. (NR – 97 minutes) Stan: Highlighting the basic element of the human spirit to survive, and the reversal of the ordinary flow of sibling order where the older ones look after the younger ones, writer/ director Ursula Meier presents a poignant story of love, courage and the intuition of our capacity to adapt to conditions surrounding us. Kacey Mottet Klein is quite impressive at an early age as the lead actor to carry the story, breathtaking cinematography of Switzerland in winter, and seeing Gillian Anderson who we all know as Special Agent Dana Scully from the ‘X-Files’ TV series of the 90s, ‘Sister’ is a delightful 90-minute experience. (Grade: B) Joseph: “Sister” is beautiful – both inside and out. Writer/director Ursula Meier’s new drama is emotionally moving and psychologically compelling, telling a story that is much more complex than at first it seems. However, it is Agnès Godard’s cinematography that steals the show, capturing the spectacular

attention, a first for a second viewing of a documentary in quite some time. Filmmaker Jacob Rosenberg presented the profile with a cinematic style that is visually captivating and emotionally inspiring for anyone who aspires to step up to a challenge, or for me, a reminder of an extreme life ending challenge I faced in 2007, bravo!(Grade: B+) Joseph: Anytime a filmmaker decides to focus on a single human being for a documentary – especially when said human being is a celebrity or, in the case of “Waiting for Lightning,” a sports star, the result can come across as somewhat isolating in that it will appeal primarily to people who are fans of or at least familiar with that individual. Jacob Rosenberg begins to break away at that seemingly inevitable outcome with his look at skateboarder Danny Way’s life by giving it to us in a way that is universally uplifting. The uninitiated are likely to still get a bit restless, though. (Grade: C)

‘Waiting for Lightning’ Filmmaker Jacob Rosenberg tells the story of Danny Way, a young man whose dream was to jump China’s Great Wall on a skateboard. In his quest for greatness, Way continues to shape the very sport which helped save his own life. (PG-13 – 80 minutes) Stan: As a watcher of the usual mainstream sports and occasionally what’s been dubbed as ‘extreme sports’ competitions and challenges with no knowledge of Danny Way other than his notoriety of a multiple X games skateboard winner, I started to watch “Waiting for Lightning’ with the thought of multi-tasking as the film started. With a loose eye on the film and ears listening as it progressed, by mid film I was devoting more attention to it. At the end, I pushed play again for a second look and gave the film my undivided

Co-Writer Patrick Melton (‘The Collection’) By Joseph J. Airdo

In “The Collection,” which opened last weekend, Josh Stewart plays a man who, having escaped the vicious grips of a serial killer, is blackmailed to rescue an innocent girl (Emma Fitzpatrick) from a booby-trapped warehouse. “We wanted to do an opening that was kind of a misdirect and one that arrives with a huge boom that is

Writer/Director Ursula Meier (‘Sister’) By Stan Robinson “I wanted to write a story for Kacey Mottet Klein who was in my first film, he was just 7 [years old], very young, it was his first movie and he played the son of a couple. He was just amazing and I thought I really wanted to write a script for him. He was in my head since that film, and suddenly I had this idea of a little kid at a ski resort. “During the writing process with my co-writer and months later, a memory came back to me. I grew up in a small town in France near Switzerland, it’s not the Alps and it’s smaller, and I spent a lot of time skiing as child. There was a boy who was alone, admiring the skis, looking at the people who where upper class as if he

Having said that, viewers hoping for a narrative arc of any kind will surely be disappointed as this is nothing more than a simple snapshot, with the characters – literally and metaphorically – riding a ski lift in what is essentially a circle. Nonetheless, said circle is worth experiencing. (Grade: C)

That memory came back to me for this story; it stayed in my head, in my subconscious all these years and came back to me during the writing process. It wasn’t a very big memory, just the little boy, alone.

“The place where I shot this film had the same similar feel of the ski resort I had in my imagination that encompassed the very rich who skied, the working class who worked there, and the surrounding factories, and homes of the local residents in the distance who worked at the resort. “I’ve traveled a lot with the film throughout Europe and very happy because of the response to it, of course it takes place in Switzerland, but it was important for me to show a different point of view of this country because usually the view is very nice and mundane, where the well-to-do have fun and its so much morethan that. Filmmaker Jacob Rosenberg (‘Waiting for Lightning’) By Stan Robinson “I was meant to make this film because Danny and I shared a mentor who’s a character in the movie. Mike Ternasky was also my mentor as well as Danny’s, so when Mike died, there was a bit of emptiness inside of me that was searching to define itself as Danny had the same thing. So, Danny went about having an incredible career as a skate boarder and I went about finding my own career as a filmmaker. Danny and I sort of collided back into each other in 2007 when he wanted to explore what a project would look like and eventually it turned into the film we’ve now finished. I feel that it praises my mentor exactly the way that I wanted to, it also fulfills my goals as a filmmaker and storyteller, to really make an elevated and tense drama about a great character and a great inspiring story. “I feel very fortunate that Danny trusted me with his story. I think that in looking at Danny’s story and working with my team, the most important thing is making sure we had exactly that emotionally resonate moment that you’re talking about, and I think that Danny has had those satisfying moments in which people can put themselves. While they can’t understand exactly what it’s like to break their foot, they can understand what it’s like to honor someone. They can understand what it’s like to stand up in the face of adversity, and I feel that Danny has such a colorful story that allows us to touch people in ways that they want to be touched, they want to be affirmed. Great movies make you think, but they also tend to make you feel good about yourself, believe in life in a stronger way and I think Danny has

a couple of those moments and we were fortunate enough to be able structure the film in a way to really make those moments shine in which we could focus on those specific things.” – Jacob Rosenberg

Holiday Gift Guide: Horror Throughout the holidays, AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists will share quotes from interviews they have conducted with talent speaking on behalf of movies released on Blu-ray and DVD just in time for the gift-giving season. This week, they take a look at some of the selections that are available to purchase for your friends and loved ones who hunger for horror.

Writer/Director Todd Lincoln (‘The Apparition’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Apparition,” Ashley Green and Sebastian Stan play a young couple who discover they are being haunted by a presence that was accidentally conjured during a university parapsychology experiment. Their last hope is an expert in the supernatural (Tom Felton) – but even with his help they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force. “I just tried to bring some authenticity and logic to the story. It was my mission to stay away from all of the go-to horror stuff and keep the crew away from the habits that they had formed in this genre. I think that the stuff that is the most relateable makes for the best horror. That way, when the scare moments happen, they pack that much more of a punch because they feel like they can really happen to you.” – Todd Lincoln

BY VAN MEANS

By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Barrens,”Stephen Moyer plays a man who takes his family for a rustic camping trip in the dense pine forests of southern New Jersey where the Jersey Devil – the winged beast spawned 400 years ago by Satan himself – is said to still inhabit and teeters on the edge of sanity. “I wanted to make a drama – not a monster movie. It is a drama that has a monster in it as opposed to being a monster movie that has dramatic elements to it. It was very important to me that I set up a character who had something wrong with him and was descending into madness. Then I introduced a monster into that, which is my favorite type of movie to do as opposed to making a monster movie and trying to interject dramatic moments into it which feels like kind of a cop out.” – Darren Lynn Bousman

Director Steven C. Miller (‘Silent Night’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Silent Night,” which is a remake or the 1984 horror flick “Silent Night, Deadly Night,”Malcolm McDowell and Jaime King play a small-town sheriff and deputy, respectively, on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. “When they brought this to me, I saw it as a chance to reboot the franchise and do something different for the modern audience yet still have some fun with it. When you take it too seriously, you lose the audience. After all, it is Santa with a mask killing people. I do not know how serious you can go with it. I tried to stay true to what I thought slasher films were – making the killer cool and scary looking and using the actual characters as part of the humor instead of the killer.” – Steven C. Miller

BUBBLES FOR ALL! By Rhonni Moffitt, ArizonaVinesAndWines.com There’s nothing like the holiday season to bring on a craving for bubbles. Along with that craving can come a little bit of confusion. Pink, white, sparkling wine, Prosecco, Champagne, Brut … really? So many choices! What’s the difference between them all? How are the bubbles produced? The basic concept is that yeast and sugar are added to the wine, before or after bottling, depending on the chosen method. When the yeast eat the sugar, they produce CO2 which produces the bubbles. In most sparkling wines, this procedure happens during a second fermentation. What is Champagne?Just like Bordeaux or Burgundy, a sparkling wine can only be called Champagne if the grapes were grown and the wine was produced in the Champagne region of France. The majority of Champagnes are produced from either Pinot Noir or Chardonnay grapes, but a third grape, Pinot Meunier, is also allowed. Strict rules and regulations are required by the governing boards to receive the Champagne designation.

Spain, it’s called Cava, in Germany Sekt, and in South Africa Cap Classique. In Italy, sparkling wines from Muscat are called Asti, while wines from Glera are called Prosecco. In the United States, they are generally classified as Sparkling Wines, however you may find a few that have grandfathered in the name Champagne. These are required to place the actual origin on the label.

Authentic. Fresh. Local.

A few key sparkling wine terms: Blanc de Blanc: Translates as “white from white.” Sparkling from 100% Chardonnay (white) grapes. Blanc de Noir: Translates as “white from black.” Sparkling from 100% red grapes (Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier). Rosé (Pink): Rosé Champagnes (and Sparkling Wines) can be produced by leaving the fermenting juice on the skins long enough to produce color, or by adding a small amount of red wine during blending. Brut: Brut helps to signify the sweetness of the wine. Brut Natural/ Zéro: less than 3 grams of sugar per liter; Extra Brut: less than 6 grams/ liter and Brut: less than 12 grams/ liter.

Now you can go and pop that cork with confidence! Cheers!

What about all the other names I’ve seen? Many countries or regions within countries have their own designations for sparkling wines, some with similar restrictions to France. In

There are numerous ways to experiment with different wines and to build your wine collection and wine clubs are one of the most over-looked, yet highly enjoyable avenues available. Wine clubs come in many different varieties. For example, a winery-direct club is one where they periodically send you selections from their winery. Wine retailer clubs are usually national wine retailers who have deep wine inventories. In these clubs, you may be able join a club with a theme such as Italian wines, white wines only, or big styled wines like cabernets. In other wine clubs, an expert staff member hand-selects an assortment for your monthly shipment as a member in their club.

How do wine clubs work? Simply put, you sign up for a subscription and the club agrees to ship to you wine at regular intervals, usually monthly. A quick internet search will yield a wide-range of wine clubs and surely you will find one that meets your needs in the areas of quality, variety and budget. The most critical traits in choosing a wine club are customer service and the quality of the wine selections that you end up with. You are putting your wine choices into their hands – so they’d better be talented! I’ve been a member of many wine clubs over the years. One of the most gratifying was through a California winery. I always admired whoever the staff member was that made the choices for the monthly shipment. They were so creative and had a nice “wow” factor that pleasantly surprised me. I never knew what I was going to get, but it was always distinctive. One month itwould be magnums, the next month an assortment of half bottles, after that, older vintages, and on and on. I loved hosting dinner parties around these wines and sharing them with friends. As I write this, I can’t even remember why I’m not a member anymore. Some might think it is a big financial commitment to join a wine club, but they exist in many price ranges. The benefit is convenience, high quality and something interesting. If it’s not, you won’t be signing up again. Just look for proven customer service, outstanding selections, excellent prices and discounts for members, I think you’ll be pleased!

Fear & Loathing in Missouri: Slight Return By: Nathan Brugnone, @ NathanBrugnone, Nathan@ AZWineMakers.com In a recent piece entitled “Fear and Loathing in Missouri,” I recounted my brief wine excursion through the state of mind and state of the union that is Missouri. During this trip I came across alien wines, branded as fine wines made of what seemed— by most accounts—to be freakish, hybrid grapes. And this is true. But a recent encounter with one such hybrid-based wine has bended my attention to these wines for a reevaluation. Here’s the breakdown. An unnamed winery owner in the Verde Valley poured me a glass, saying, “OK, smarty pants, what wine is this?” Me: “Is it a blend? It definitely has body. It’s like a Rubik’s Cube on the senses. It must have some Mourvedre [a red grape]! There’s lots

of spice and smoke!”

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 12/6

Her: “It’s single varietal.” Me: “No way.”

12/6

She egged me on through one wrong answer after another. Petite Sirah? Petit Verdot? Carignan? Surely, the varietal must be slightly obscure for her to keep me going. Or maybe the grape is so common I would never guess it, hidden right out in the open. Finally, she hands me the bottle. Across the middle it read, “Baco Noir.” And that’s when my self-imposed wall of vinifera (European grape) purity came tumbling down. I had heard of this hybrid, and held its name in memory mostly due to the fact that it contained the word “bacon.” I had finally tasted it. It was absolutely amazing! I swear it had maple- and bourbon-glazed bacon tones! I have seen the light. My eyes are open. My glass awaits unknown treasures. What have you tasted that everyone must try? Email me.

A TOAST TO THE REPEAL January 16th, 1919 was the beginning of a dark period in American history that started with the ratification of the 18th Amendment and didn’t end for thirteen years with the ratification of the 21st Amendment on December 5th, 1933. This era became known as Prohibition and saw the outlawing of all alcoholic beverages in the United States. Since we just celebrated what has become known as Repeal Day, let’s examine that time a little more closely. The 18th Amendment is the only Constitutional Amendment to ever be repealed and it signified the end of what was called The Noble Experiment by supporters of Prohibition. In reality it was harmful

to the country and served to provide numerous opportunities for organized crime to gain footholds as well as creating a general unhappiness with the Federal Government. The proponents of prohibition had believed that banning alcoholic beverages would reduce or even eliminate many social problems, particularly drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty. In 1925, journalist H.L. Mencken believed the opposite to be true: Five years of Prohibition have had, at least, this one benign effect: they have completely disposed of all the favorite arguments of the Prohibitionists. Four Peaks, Part Deux Hello again craft beer fanatics. First, thank you for putting up with last week’s rant concerning UNTAPPD.com. I know the subject was off topic for this month but it had to be voiced! This week, I’d like to tell you about the new Four Peaks Tasting Room and Brewery location at 2401 S. Wilson Street in west Tempe. Yes you heard correctly, a new location to drink my favorite local beer Hop Knot! Why a second brewery location you ask? Why Tempe? The first question is easily addressed when you think about how difficult it can be to procure AZ Peach or Double Knot IPA. Four Peaks simply needed more room to brew more beer. By moving production of heavy hitters such as Kilt Lifter and the aforementioned Hop Knot to the new facility, they have freed up space on 8th street for those specialty brews we all dream about. That’s right ladies, very soon your favorite Arizona fruit beer will be available year round in cans! Beyond that there will be more of those highly sought after beers like Pumpkin Porter and Sirius Black. Question two, why Tempe? Well to put it simply to Four Peaks, Tempe is home. The roots of this brewery and its people go hand in hand with everything Tempe over the past fifteen years. The close proximity to their original location also makes for quicker turnaround time and more synergy between the brewers.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local Fox Cigar brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

On another note, even with more capacity, Four Peaks is determined to Keep It Local and focus on Arizona only. Lately we have seen an insurgence of new breweries from different states here in Arizona and as our own breweries begin to look elsewhere for more business it’s refreshing to know that Four Peaks sees Arizona as its first priority. Until next week, Cheers! December 6th, 2012 - December 12th, 2012

BEER! SECTION that were to follow the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment has come to pass. There is not less drunkenness in the Republic, but more. There is not less crime, but more. There is not less insanity, but more. The cost of government is not smaller, but vastly greater. Respect for law has not increased, but diminished. And while Prohibition may not have been responsible for The Great Depression, it certainly played its part in making the Depression worse. Between costs of enforcement and lost tax revenue it is estimated that Prohibition cost the country around a billion dollars during the period from the late 1920’s until Repeal. Money that could have helped drastically with needed services during that

time. The entire thirteen years of Prohibition cost the United States about $11,000,000,000 dollars in lost tax revenue and another $400,000,000 in enforcement costs. The chaos created by Prohibition and the overwhelming desire of the American public to consume adult beverages made the time ripe for the incredible growth of organized crime. Serving as retail distribution channels and, in many cases production as well, cities were almost taken over by organized crime groups. But it was not all the mob’s doing, most of the production and trafficking was still done by ordinary citizens looking to make money and provide a service for their fellow Americans. Much of it was also done by Canadian interests. Production of spirits, wine and beer was still legal in Canada and a quick bootlegging run across the border

could net these companies a nice profit. Prohibition brought us many terms used today. For instance, the term speakeasy is said to come from bartenders telling patrons to “speak easy” when ordering so as not to be overheard some 30 years before prohibition. While the speakeasy was often funded by organized crime and could be very elaborate and upscale, the “blind pig” was a dive for the less desirable drinker. It should be noted that one of Russian River Brewing’s flagship brands is Blind Pig IPA. The term “The Real McCoy” also came out of this era. It’s attributed to Captain William S. McCoy who facilitated most of the rum running via ships during prohibition and would never water down his imports, making his the “real” thing. When it became evident that Prohibition had failed, as many movements that ignore the will of the people do, a politician named Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for president on a platform that included the repeal of the 18th Amendment. Soon-to-be President Roosevelt also had a plan to get us out of The Depression and was easily elected. His “New Deal” became a major turning point for the United States.

and the Amendment became law. However, prior to that the CullenHarrison act was signed into law by President Roosevelt. This act allowed for production and sale of beer of no more than 3.2% alcohol by weight (4.0% if using the more common alcohol by volume measurement) and beer returned to the country in April of 1933. Interesting fact... The first legal bottle of beer produced by Washington’s Abner Drury Brewery was delivered to President Roosevelt at the White House shortly after midnight on April 14, 1933 and stored in the President’s pantry because he was still asleep. Here are some other interesting facts about Prohibition and its repeal. Dewar’s Scotch - the first legal whisky to arrive in the U.S. - hit New York’s South Street Seaport docks the moment the law was put into action. Joseph Kennedy, Sr. (JFK’s father) happened to be the US agent for the brand. Now, a lot of people have suggested that Joseph Kennedy was a bootlegger, which he may or may not have been. But what he really was, was the owner of a company named Somerset Importers. Somerset owned the exclusive rights to import Dewar’s Scotch and Gordon’s Gin, and right before Repeal, Somerset stocked up. Once Prohibition was over, they sold the premium liquors for a hefty profit, and Joe was a rich man.The umbrella becomes a clever symbol of the post-prohibition era.
