Celebrate Arizona’s 100th Birthday with a Unique Symphony Experience The Phoenix Symphony commemorates the Centennial Celebration of the State of Arizona with a unique multimedia event by James Westwater featuring

Alpin Hong Friday, January 27, 2012 · 8pm

Lead by Virginia G. Piper Music Director Michael Christie in a premiere performance of music and photography, the Centennial Celebration! Grofe: Grand Canyon Suite will remind Arizona’s community of our state’s natural beauty and incredible history. The performance will be a multimedia event by transcendent still photographer, James Westwater. Westwater combines photographic art with classical music to create a technique he

calls “photochoreography.” His philosophy is to create visual compositions to match the images the music illustrates. Originally titled Five Pictures of the Grand Canyon, Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite represents five movements of a typical canyon experience. “Sunrise,” “Painted Desert,” “On the Trail,” “Sunset” and “Cloudburst” can be heard on the Disneyland Railroad, the 1983 film A Christmas Story and the 1958 Academy Award-winning Walt Disney short, Grand Canyon.

As part of the US Airways Classics Series, Centennial Celebration! Grofe: Grand Canyon Suite will be held at Symphony Hall on Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. sponsored by Snell and Wilmer, and Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. sponsored by SRP. Tickets for Centennial Celebration! Grofe: Grand Canyon Suite start at $18 and can be purchased by calling the Phoenix Symphony Box Office at 602-495-1999 or by visiting phoenixsymphony.org.

FILM! Stan Robinson, ScreenScene.org

Joseph J. Airdo Examiner.com

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

Joseph: “The ‘good acting but bad movie’ trend continues with Rodrigo Garcia’s period drama ‘Albert Nobbs.’ Without star Glenn Close, who gives a truly transcendent performance, the sluggishly paced new motion picture, which is based on a short story by Irish novelist George Moore, would likely have wound up on television as one of those easily disregarded cable miniseries that you only hear about during the Golden Globe Awards – or worse, an installment of PBS’s ‘Masterpiece Theater.’” Grade: D

what the pitch meeting for writer/ director Joe Carnahan’s new action flick ‘The Grey’ sounded like. Carnahan: ‘Liam Neeson versus a pack of wolves.’ Producers: ‘That’s all we need to know. You’re going to Hollywood.’ Regardless of the simplicity of said synopsis (much less the similarities of pitch meetings to ‘American Idol’ auditions, apparently), the fact that Carnahan got a green light is excellent news for moviegoers as ‘The Grey’ is a no-holds-barred, testosteronefueled thrill ride. Surprisingly, it is also emotionally resonant and theoretically profound.” Grade: B

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s “Movie Maverick” radio segment, every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. during “The Daily Blender with Jeffry O’Brien” on KBSZ - NBC 1260 AM and 96.1 FM

About the Film Columnists Stan Robinson, 65, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at AZWeeklyMagazine.com. Joseph J. Airdo, 28, is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

‘Albert Nobbs’ In 19th-century Ireland, a woman (Glenn Close) who masquerades as a man becomes entangled in an unusual love triangle. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 113 minutes) Stan: “The treatment of the familiar theme of such films as ‘Victor Victoria’ (1982) and ‘Tootsie’ (1982) featuring both males and females who assume opposite sex identities in order to work and survive, ‘Albert Nobbs’ again visit’s that theme andfeature’s a very good performance by Glenn Close in the lead, but its the performance of co-star Janet McTeer with her character portrayal that got my attention.” Grade: B Randy: “Glenn Close plays her male character with ease and is deserving of the praise she has been receiving. In an equally strong supporting role is Janet McTeer, whose work in the film has gone mostly unrecognized. A historically important story about self-repression that will unfortunately be overlooked by most moviegoers”. Grade: B+

‘The Grey’ Vicious wolves pursue eight survivors (Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney and Frank Grillo) of a plane crash as they trek through the Alaskan wilderness to find civilization. (R – 117 minutes) Stan: “Reminded of a basic element of my time as a Vietnam veteran, that of learning to live with fear every day, and a conversation with writer/director Joe Carnahan who faced the challenge of shooting with only eight hours of daylight per day over 40 days, the director and ensemble cast of ‘The Grey’ with an accelerated and very tight shooting window, gives us a raw and emotionally compelling view of the human spirit’s will to survive against all odds, even in the face of extreme futility…” Grade: B Joseph: “One cannot help but wonder

‘Man on a Ledge’ While trying to talk down a disgraced ex-cop (Sam Worthington) from a highrise ledge, a police negotiator (Elizabeth Banks) begins to suspect the man has ulterior motives. (PG-13 – 102 minutes) Stan: “Although one might assume from the trailers it’s a action cop story, ‘Man on a Ledge’ is more a psychological thriller with action as a by product. While the twists & turns, multi-layered plot lines, and visual scenes from the ledge that certainly tweak the height sensations aspects in all of us come relentlessly into our psychic, it’s a non stop ride as our minds race to take in the clues to determine the ‘why’ for anyone who go to such lengths to prove their innocence.” Grade: B

say that the movie is one of the most emotional cinematic experiences I have ever witnessed, partly as a result of actress TildaSwinton’s spectacular performance and partly because of the way that its style essentially reflects what the actress’s character is thinking and feeling over the course of her horrifically haunting ordeal.” Grade: A

Joseph: “It is not too often that a motion picture is so skillfully crafted that the viewer cannot predict what will occur from one minute to the next. But that is precisely what ‘Man on a Ledge’ accomplishes. The new crime thriller from director Asger Leth and screenwriter Pablo F. Fenjves keeps the audience guessing from the breakneck beginning to the explosive end. Anchored by an strong cast and accentuated with even stronger suspense, ‘Man on a Ledge’ takes you on a rousing roller-coaster ride without restraints.” Grade: B

‘The Wicker Tree’

‘One for the Money’* A rookie bounty hunter (Katherine Heigl) goes after a bail jumper and murder suspect (Jason O’Mara) who just happens to be the guy who seduced and dumped her back in high school. (PG-13 – 100 minutes) *Not made available for review.

‘Tomboy’ A ten-year-old girl, new to the neighborhood is mistaken as a boy due to her looks. Over the course of a summer, unbeknown to her parents, she masquerades as the opposite gender, tricking her new friends and female schoolgirl crush. Playing exclusively at the Desperado LGBT Film Festival. In French with English subtitles. (NR – 84 minutes) Randy: “Easily one of the finest films released in 2011, ‘Tomboy’ was the winner of the ‘Best Feature Film Award’ at the Berlin Film Festival. Despite winning top accolades around the globe, this release did not receive a much-deserved theatrical run in the Phoenix area. An amazing performance by the young lead actress and numerous emotionally tough moments make this an unforgettable film.” Grade: A+

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

A pair of young missionaries (Brittania Nicol and Henry Garrett) discover disturbing secrets about the seemingly friendly residents of a small town in Scotland. Written and directed by Robin Hardy. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 90 minutes)

‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ Flashbacks reveal a woman’s (Tilda Swinton) calamitous efforts to raise her firstborn son (Ezra Miller) while, in the present; she grapples with the aftermath of the youth’s horrific act. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 111 minutes) Stan: “Writer/director Lynne Ramsay presents a stark view for those of us who are parents and a nightmare we hope to never face with our children. Oscar® winner Tilda Swinton’s performance is the glue that holds the film’s focus as we truly feel her angst as her realization, the aftermath, and her decision raises ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ above the usual theme of kids going wrong, forcing a sigh of relief at the normalcy of my kids with families of their own.” Grade: B+ Randy: “Tilda Swinton turns in such a strong performance, that I recognized it as one of the top five performances by an actress in 2011. ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ is a must-see that will keep you talking for days afterwards. This small indie film probably won’t make much of an impact at the box office, but that’s even more reason to see it.” Grade: A Joseph: “Each and every moment of writer/director Lynne Ramsay’s dramatic thriller ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ is mournfully mesmerizing. Joseph: “Sometimes an eerie mood and a sadistic self-awareness is more than enough. Such is the case with ‘The Wicker Tree,’ writer/director Robin Hardy’s worthy companion piece to his 1973 cult classic ‘The Wicker Man.’ Although it takes plenty of patience before finally arriving at a pretty predictable destination – especially if you have seen Hardy’s original – the new dramatic thriller exudes an ambiance that tickles your funny bone and creeps down your spine at the same time.” Grade: C

Writer/Director Joe Carnahan (‘The Grey’) By Stan Robinson “The short story for the film kind of found me, I was working on ‘Mission Impossible 3’, I was coming to the end of that project, and read this sparse bare bones, striped down survival story at a time when I was dealing with a big studio, big star, big franchise, and it seemed like a complete departure and that appealed to me. And then I kind of found it by spending the ensuing years of putting the script together, you know it was a kind of a mutual thing in the end and the project and I found each other.

Randy: “What a fun movie! ‘Man on a Ledge’ is far from being an award-winner, but it sure is a wild and fun ride. Although a bit predictable and features a rushed ending that seems as if the filmmakers ran out of film stock, one cannot help but have a blast watching Sam Worthington teeter on the edge of a high-rise while Elizabeth Banks plays along.” Grade: B

wardrobe) and stays in character all day until it comes off at the end [of the day]. I truly believe an important aspect for an actor is to actually listen as a fellow actor is delivering lines in a scene and not to focus on remembering one’s own lines to say them. I strive for an honest reaction and delivery of the lines relating to the moment, and feel it, as well as say it! As for my characterMike Ackerman, he’s a dark and mysterious person. However, he’s not a stereotypical aggressive or dangerous one, he’s a cop and a former partner of the suicidal man threatening to jump off of the ledge of a hi-rise building with the main objective of talking his friend Nick (played by Sam Worthington) off of that ledge, so it was important for me to fill in that character’s backstory of that friendship and deliver a character that both the audience watching and Nick would trust and believe in.” – Anthony Mackie

For me, acting is essentially an art form where the ends justifies the means, and where I feel most comfortable working by perceived necessity. If I had to give my methodology a name, it would simply be ‘what ever it takes.’ In the end,it’s only the presentation of the moment of the scene that matters, and how you get there [as an actor] to a viewer is irrelevant. If I can make the viewer feel the scene, I’ve accomplished what I’ve set out to do as an actor.” – Ezra Miller

You have to deal with it, and that’s what the movie is about, these guys are in a situation where they’re forced to deal with the elements, the wolves, the wild, and that’s a very similar unpredictable quality of nature, there’s that commonality of dealing with constant fear, which is the very essence of ‘The Grey’.” – Joe Carnahan

Actor Anthony Mackie (‘Man on a Ledge’)

“[Andy Dick] was just amazing. He showed up to the set every day on time, sober and excited. The scene where he is ranting at the team and dripping sweat, those were 15 minute takes. And all of that sweat was real; we didn’t have to spray him with anything. He was just giving his all in every scene – physically and mentally.”– Marshall Cook

“As an actor I tend to strafe across the board, I have yet to identify myself in one category of actor or lean to any particular theory of acting or method, or approach. Each scene spells out specifically different requirements and I usually know by some sort of ambiguous internal meter whether or not I will have to, as you say, be within the mindset of the character, feeling the emotionality of the character, or holding the physical presence of the character for nights and days before we do the scene, or, if I can simply find it in a breath and

‘Division III: Football’s Finest’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “Division III: Football’s Finest,”Andy Dick plays Rick Vice, a redneck psycho with a suspect record, who is brought in to turn around the worst team in college football’s lowest division after their previous coach drops dead on the sidelines. The comedy also stars Marshall Cook, who serves as the film’s director, co-writer and co-executive producer, too.

A variety of short films will be shown, along with multiple features. “Joe + Belle” is “a dark comedy from Israel about two girls who fall in love with their country and with each other en route from Tel Aviv to Sderot.” Actor Matthew Ludwinski will be at the festival to discuss his film “Going Down in La La Land,” which is “a candid, sexy, and outrageously funny look at what an actor can and will do to survive in Hollywood.” Director JC Calciano will present his film “Ecupid,” the story of a cocky 30 year-old who finds love through a new electronic dating application. “Ecupid” co-stars Morgan Fairchild. A highlight of the festival is the must-see screening of the French film “Tomboy.” “It’s an amazing film. Our audience is going to be blown away,” says Desperado Film Festival Chair Alan East.

Another Reason Scottsdale is One Cool City

New Gelato Shop in Downtown Scottsdale to Serve Recipes by Italy’s Top Gelatiere Move over ice cream! Cool Gelato Italiano is bringing delicious hand-crafted artisanal Italian gelato to Scottsdale in early February. Located directly behind the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, this elegantly designed gelato shop is the entrepreneurial dream of Alberto della Casa and Letizia de Lucia, a husband-and-wife team whose careers in the food industry, both in Italy and the United States, span a combined 35 years. One of the basic differences between artisanal gelato and ice cream is that gelato doesn’t contain as much air and is therefore more intense in flavor. Gelato is healthier than ice cream because it contains less fat and fewer calories.

Cool’s gelato is made fresh daily onsite. The gelato is produced in small quantities and because of its freshness requires no preservatives. No artificial colors or chemical additives are used. The fresh, natural ingredients give Cool’s gelato a unique taste and texture. Authentic gelato graces the taste buds in a way that even the best of premium ice creams fails to do. Each day Cool will feature 20 distinct flavors designed by Alberto and Letizia in collaboration with Italy’s champion gelato artisan recognized by the Italian Academy of Gelato. Cool will also highlight authentic sorbet made with fresh fruits, gelato sandwiches, gelato affogato and more. Cool is located at 7373 E. Scottsdale Mall, Suite 125 in Scottsdale. Guests can experience true Italian gelato from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Free covered parking and indoor/ outdoor seating is available. For more information on Cool Gelato Italiano, visit www. coolgelatoitaliano.com.

A Full Moon Making Me Thirsty!

Hello again Beer Lovers, today lets continue Keeping It Local and chat about Mud Shark Brewing’s Full Moon White Ale. First off, a little info on the brewery itself. Mudshark is located in Lake Havasu City here in AZ. They are the first local brewery to can their beer and have been in business since 1998. Their current Master Brewer is Guy Bartmess who brewed for many years at the old Rock Bottom in Ahwatukee, AZ. I love this brew for a few reasons. First, it’s available in a can. As many of you now know, Cans are a great vessel for serving beer. They contain very little Oxygen; they let in no light or UV rays and keep beer fresh for much longer periods of time than bottles. Second of course is because this little local gem is 8.5 percent ABV. Hello Vicar! It pours a hazy golden straw color with a light foamy head and leaves an amazing amount of lacing on the glass as you finish the beer. Citrus and coriander dominate the nose and follow through on the palate with slight hints of banana and clove. The high alcohol content is noticeable but hardly offensive with a great warming effect. A wheat beer for winter months? By George, I think I’ve got it!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Great food pairings include a tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad with balsamic vinaigrette, bruschetta with goat cheese and roasted peppers or perhaps even a fig spread over brie with dark fruit crackers. Booze pairings should include a bright silver tequila or a vodka martini with lime juice. Trust me on the Martini; sip it while you pound through a few of these brews on a great night of over indulgence. Isn’t beer great? As always, keep sending your comments and questions to kingjamesswann@ gmail.com and keep your head in the local beer scene as it’s now more important than ever!

13. Beer has even influenced the history of the United States. A famous group of settlers to a new colony changed their final destination because of a shortage of supplies (most especially beer). On what ship were these settlers traveling? a. b. c. d.

Nina Pinta Santa Maria Mayflower

14. A special yeast, developed in 1864, gave which beer its distinctive flavor? The answers: 1. Pilsen, home to Pilsner Urquell (Original Pilsner) is the first city that this common style of beer was brewed 2. Labatt first sold Ice beer in 1993

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

3. The term for the science of converting malt, hops, water and yeast to beer is called Zymurgy, from the Greek term “Zumu” meaning “To Leaven” 4. Weihenstephan was opened in the Bavaria region of Germany in 1040 by a Benedictine order of monks. Now state owned, it runs one of the most respected brewing schools in the world. 5. The term wort comes from the Old English “Wyrt” and is used as a suffix to describe plants and herbs that have medicinal value. 6. AB InBev have decided to reduce the ABV on Budweiser, Becks and Stella Artois sold in the United Kingdom from 5% to 4.8%, according to The Grocer , a trade magazine. The Grocer further goes on to say that this move would save them 8.6 million pounds (about 13.4 million US dollars) annually on the Stella Artois brand alone. While all of these breweries make outstanding beers, it is the Trappist beers of Westvletern that are widely prized. The only way to purchase them (through fully legal channels) is to make an appointment at the brewery and arrive to pick up as many as two cases of whichever beer they are selling on that particular day. It sometimes takes hours to get through to the brewery and sales are limited to whatever quantities are expected to be on hand that particular day. On the grey market, bottles of Westvletern 12 have been known to go for over $40 for an 11.2 oz package.

8. Lambics are a Belgian beer made brewed by spontaneous fermentation…they natural yeasts and bacteria found in the air are used for the fermentation process. Lambics are often done in koelschips in Belgium to this day. Cantillon and DrieFonteinen are classic examples. The yeasts and bacteria are now found to be a part of the breweries themselves in larger numbers more than anything floating free in the air of the Senne Valley. These strains are cultivated and pitched in barrels or separate fermenters (and, preferably, buildings! Wild yeasts can be very infectious when you don’t want them to be.) by many modern brewers without the need of the open air. 9. There are 1984 ounces of beer in a standard 15.5 half barrel of beer. This equates to approximately 6.88 cases. 10. Molson brewing in Montreal opened in 1786, Yuengling in Pottsville is the oldest American brewery having opened in 1829. It is also the largest American owned brewery. 11. Philadelphia has the richest brewing traditions. Its first brewery opened in 1885 and by 1890 over 95 breweries operated there. It is widely

7. Dale’s Pale Ale was the very first craft beer in a can, and still one of the finest available.

believed that the US Marines were formed in Philadelphia at the originalTun Tavern. 12. The Babylonian people were credited with brewing beer over 4,000 years ago. Almost every civilized society in the world has brewed some sort of beer. 13. Due to their dwindling supplies the pilgrims aboard the Mayflower had to abandon their plans to arrive at Jamestown, Virginia and instead landed at Plymouth Rock. 14. The brew got its name the same year when Dutchman and brewer Gerard Adrian Heineken bought the 272-yearold De Hooiberg brewery.

WHEELCHAIR EXTREME! Believe it or not, there are extreme sports geared at even those who experience physical debilitation, deterioration, or injuries that preclude them from many other activities. And why shouldn’t there be? An adventurous spirit is not always housed in an able body. A person who has limited mobility in their lower half may not be able to leap out of a plane on their own, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to fly. And they might not be able to ride a bike in the Tour de France, but they can still use the wheels they have to race. In fact, people who are bound to wheelchairs can participate in many of the same athletic activities as able-legged persons (football, basketball, etc.) and they can even compete in a number of extreme sports, albeit in a different (and often more difficult) fashion. Here are just a few ways that those in wheelchairs are taking their activities to the extreme.

1. Skateboarding. Don’t waste your time trying to figure out how these guys (and gals) strap themselves to an actual skateboard. Don’t you know that wheelchairs come equipped with wheels? What’s amazing is that athletes in wheelchairs can do many of the same moves as those who have the use of both legs and a skateboard. They can work a half-pipe just as well as anyone, and pulling tricks like ollies, flips, and fakies just comes with the territory. Adaptation is the name of the game for anyone who competes in this amazing sport that is a testament to the human spirit. 2. Four-wheel mountain biking. Four-wheelers are nothing new, so why not use them as a way to compete in a sport that usually requires two legs to pedal? A strong pair of arms is all that’s required to participate, although good balance

and the ability to roll out of a spill without damage can be a big help since this sport is generally practiced on rough downhill tracks. 3. Jousting. Leave it to fans of Jackass to come up with a sport that is just as horrifying as it is fascinating. In this outrageous and bemusing sport, two people in wheelchairs race towards each other bearing not the traditional lances of old, but rather cattle prods intended to shock their opponent into submission. It’s like a train wreck; you don’t want to look, but you can’t turn away. No word on whether this idiocy was developed by people who actually need wheelchairs to get around or just those who happened to stumble on some. 4. Sit-skiing. By using an adapted mono-ski (like a snowboard with

a chair attached), those who have limited locomotion in their lower half can still participate in one of the best winter sports in the world. Of course, balance and upper body strength are a must for those who want to try this dangerous and difficult sport, but it can provide a great opportunity for mobility without the use of wheels. 5. Mountain climbing. Mark Wellman (a mountain climber who was paralyzed in an accident) proved that a sport which many would assume requires the use of lower appendages is merely a matter of perspective. Despite the obvious obstacles, he managed to ascend both Half Dome and El Capitan (sheer rock faces) in Yosemite National Park.

Symon says:

There must be some superhuman gene involved in being Michael Symon. Chef and owner of numerous restaurants, including the Cleveland-area staples Lola, Lolita, Bar Symon and B Spot, Symon somehow also finds time to appear on shows such as “Iron Chef America” on Food Network, ABC’s “The Chew” and his recent series, “Symon’s Suppers” on Cooking Channel. Since September, Symon has been challenging himself on “The Chew” with “Five in Five,” a segment in which he introduces viewers to a dish with five or fewer ingredients that can be purchased for five dollars (or less) and made in five minutes. According to Symon, after all of this thinking on his feet in the kitchen, his principal passion has become teaching the everyday person to cook.

Jon Heder grew up watching “The Simpsons” and studied animation in college, so seeing himself animated in Fox’s “Napoleon Dynamite” is surreal. “It is pretty weird,” Heder says. “It looks like the character and me and my voice.” Heder has played other roles, but it’s the role of the uber-geeky Napoleon in the 2004 movie that made him famous. Though some actors try to distance themselves from such a definitive character, fearing typecasting, Heder enjoys revisiting the high-school kid. “It’s awesome,” he says. “I started my career doing that character. I think that is what helped me. He is such a great character, a funny, iconic figure. It is pretty exciting to be that character, to be the one who brought him to life and to continue in the cartoon.” Unlike Napoleon, forever stuck in high school, Heder has gone on. He attended Brigham Young University, served as a missionary in Japan for two years and speaks Japanese. “I am as fluent as I can be,” he says. “I still speak it. I don’t get as many opportunities as I would like. Almost every project I do they slip it in a little bit. I try to keep it up.” As an actor with an art background, Heder reflects on the new show. “I am Dynamite Simpsonized, which is weird to see because they are such different worlds,” he says. “This is such an animated world, and part of the charm of ‘Napoleon’ was it felt so much like the real world. There really are characters in that movie who are fleshed out. At the same time (they) are kind of cartoonish. They feel real because it is all subtleties. A lot of the subtlety is gone (in the TV series). The pace moves quicker. There are jokes.”

I suppose you can safely say that American music has influenced global pop-cultures for decades. We’re known for our hip-hop flavors, jazz, country, pop, and rock and roll along with the drama and sometimes embarrassing antics surrounding our musicians. These days, all the young people I’ve met while traveling know who Kanye West and Lady Gaga are and even live their lives obsessing over such icons. Some may even passionately argue that our young nation produces the best music available, however, there is one genre we have yet to fully conquer and that’s electronic dance music. Yay for those Europeans who know what’s up when it comes to making people go wild on the dance floor. With the genius mixing skills of Scottish DJ, Calvin Harris, and the talented, Rihanna, people all over the world are finding love in hopeless places (a.k.a. drunkenly making out with some hot random on a sweaty dance floor while grinding to that song—oooohh you dirty, dirty boys and girls). It’s such a catchy tune until it becomes tired after all the plays on the radio. Hey, 101.5, would you guys slow down on playing that song for a while?! Please and thank you. But I guess that’s what happens when a song lives at the top of international charts for some 8 consecutive weeks. Good for them and good for us. The great Calvin Harris is also known for hits, “Feel so Close” and “You Used to Hold Me”--we’re talking about millions of YouTube plays here, which deserves more than a booth at Myst, if you ask me. BUT yes to that as well because it means no under-aged kiddies boppin’ about and cheap tickets. The only downside to this is that it’s on Sunday so it may mean planning on getting sick on Monday or drinking a gallon of water before going to bed. Sunday, January 29th. 9 pm – 2 am. Scottsdale. www. insomniac.com. $25 - $55. Ages 21+

ASU, UA and NAU Young Alumni Mixer at LimeLight Dipping Bar & Grill An alumni mixer for Arizona’s three biggest university graduates, eh? This is very interesting, indeed. No pitchforking in Wildcats’ faces this time, Devils--instead, it’s time to make nice. Perhaps we can use this occasion to share our struggles with finding a job that has anything to do with our degrees. I, for one, graduated in 2008 when our economy just started getting sour and would be interested in seeing what my fellow graduates decided to do with their lives. Oh, there will be comparing involved, for sure. And then there will be judging and maybe even ego bruising (or building). Whether you go there to check on the competition or to make friends, I recommend sipping on one of LimeLight’s Blackberry Tarragon Martinis for lubrication. LimeLight is one of Old Town’s newest trendy restaurants, located on Scottsdale road, and will have food and drink specials that evening. It’s a great way to meet people outside of your current friend groups and you may even run into some old, maybe even hot, classmates. Thursday, January 26th. 6 pm – 8 pm. 4218 N. Scottsdale Rd. RSVP at http:// bit.ly/uHp28a. Alumni 35 years and younger.

Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Evelyn at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.

“The finer things in life” I enjoy the sophisticated mid-century luxury of Mabel’s on Main. It is a very dark place; it is great for a date. They have these walls that look like book shelves, but they are doors that lead you to VIP areas; I think that’s unique. Their happy hour is TuesdaySunday 5pm-7pm. They offer 50% off the ENTIRE menu and all drinks as well! Their teamer clams in garlic broth are so delicious and they are less than $7 between the happy hour times. This is the kind of place where

I did not like this place the first time that I went but my friends convinced me to give it another try, and I am glad that I listened. Saddle Ranch Chop House is a lot of fun and they have really great prices during their happy hour which is Monday-Friday 4pm-6:30pm. There are also daily specials during the week which are great when just getting off work. They offer $1.99 bloody marys and mimosas every day until 3pm, $2 Tuesdays, and $2 you call its and $2 appetizers start at 11pm! A main attraction of this place is the mechanical bull. Coming here and having a few drinks and getting on the bull are nice for something a little different to your normal outings. 9375 W Coyotes Blvd. Glendale, AZ 85305

* July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch. Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions.

Music is as addictive as sex and drugs.

On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year. In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.” NEWS OR NEWS WORTHY???
