Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Joseph: “The charm of writer/director Asghar Farhadi’s drama ‘A Separation’ is its strange simplicity. That is not to say that the new motion picture, which recently won a Golden Globe and is now nominated for an Oscar, lacks substance. In fact, the case is quite the contrary as ‘A Separation’ dives into some drastically deep waters. However, by presenting his project in such a low-key manner, the filmmaker incites intense identification with the morality mess that develops – despite some obvious cultural differences.” Grade: B

‘The Woman in Black’* A widowed lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe) encounters ghostly activities at the foreboding estate of a recently deceased client. (PG-13 – 99 minutes)

“Granted, life is 360. I love to tell stories and I love film. I love to be on a set. But then there are other things that you love and without the other things – without someone or people to share what you do with – your life is not full. We tapped into that in these five stories. You see their journeys on a personal, emotional level. “I think there is a sense of balance that you want to achieve in your life. But if you look back as time moves forward, you have captured these moments that just resonate through your soul. Trying to capture that sense of time and cycles of love and life in this film was really important and the fact that we were able to do it in any capacity is remarkable. I look at some of the things we shot and think, ‘I am so happy that we got these moments.’” – Jill Andresevic

by Stan Robinson

The event will take place Feb. 18-26 at four locations throughout Sedona, including Harkins Sedona 6, the Sedona Rouge, the Sedona Performing Arts Center at Sedona Red Rock High School and the new Mary D. Fisher Theater – which will be inaugurated during the festival and serve as the official screening venue for films throughout the year. Passes and ticket packages are now available and range in price from $80 to $750. Individual film tickets will go on sale soon.

“I learned that life and love are more important than work. We remember our connectivity to people. That is the stuff that really holds us and moves us in our lives more than anything else. I have worked very hard in my life and it was so ironic that I did this movie and it is all about love, connection, the passage of time and the cycles in our lives. “I think it is very potent, powerful and highly meaningful in terms of ‘How do you spend your life?’ and ‘How do you spend your time?’ and ‘What are you building?’ and ‘What are you creating?’ and ‘What do you love?’ and ‘How does that reflect back on your world in a complete way?’ Some people do not want to engage in a relationship. Why is that? What are they afraid of?

Days before ‘Underworld’s (2003) US opening, the president of Screen Gems ‘green lit’ not only a sequel to the movie, but also a prequel after seeing the number of tickets sold in Canada alone! ... continued from Page 17. I became aware of that fact quite some time ago and having worked on the film production side for over 20 years, although critics may have some expertise in the field they cover, not one movie reviewer is a voting member of the Academy (which has some 6,000 members). On the other hand, there is a significant overlap between Academy voters and members of the various guilds and unions, which are representative of the categories voted on for Oscars®. By: Carrie Gurule “Kanpai!!” Sushi is one of my favorite things to eat, and Nakama Sushi Restaurant and Lounge gives you a great experience. They have a real modern lounge feel to their atmosphere with throw pillows and cube seating. Happy hour is actually EVERY DAY from 4pm-7pm and ALL DAY on Sundays! I love finding places that have happy hour on the daily. For their drinks they have $2.50 16oz domestic drafts, $5.75 sake bombers, $5 Three Olives grape or cherry bombers, $5 seagrams sweet tea palmers, and $1 off any other drink as well. My favorite roll is a Vegas roll, and I also enjoy that it is completely different everywhere that you go. I enjoyed it here and it was only $7 instead of the usual $10. They also offer eight different $5 starters as well including: edamame hummus, stuffed shitake mushrooms, pans Asian chicken lettuce wraps, and Nakama wings; to name a few. Coming here is a nice change instead of your sushi chains; it is far away but well worth it. 13215 West McDowell Rd. Goodyear, AZ 85395

“You’ll love it; you just don’t know it yet” I do not know how many of you enjoy having a few beers, but I just recently started to get into local and craft beers. SanTan Brewing Company is a popular one, and all for good reason. What I like about this place is the options for beer; they have the fruity beers that I will not drink, but they also have some beers that I just keep going back for (Devil’s Ale, Hop Shock IPA). They have an early happy hour that runs Monday-Fridays 2pm-6pm with: $3.75 pints, $4 house wines, $1 off everything behind the bar, and $6 select appetizers. Breweries are a lot of fun, and there are more out there than just Four Peaks. 8 South San Marcos Place Chandler, AZ 85225

BEER! BEER MYTHS UNCOVERED I thought it might be fun to take a look at some common beer myths and find out what is true and what isn’t. So, let’s start with one of the most famous beer quotes of all:

1 –“Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy” –Benjamin Franklin

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” Now, don’t get me wrong, it is a lovely sentiment and it would be great if such a renowned thinker as Ben Franklin actually said this. Sadly, there is no evidence he ever did, and what’s worse, the quote that spawned this misquote was actually about wine. What Ben wrote in a letter to André Morellet, a French economist, in 1779 was: “Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.” 2. - Light beers will help you lose weight On average, a light beer will have 90-100 calories, while a regular beer might have under 200. In the grand scheme of things, light beers

will contribute very little to your dietary goals. A beer lover would say the difference is comparable to the difference between McDonalds and a 5 star restaurant. A dietician would tell you the difference is negligible. So unless you are drinking 300 beers a week, I would drink what you like. 3 - Dark beers are higher in alcohol The color of beer has no relation to its alcohol content. For example, Guinness, one of the most popular dark beers has an alcohol volume of 4.2%, while several light-colored Belgian beers have alcohol content of 8%+.The color of a beer comes from the toasted malts, which has no effect on alcohol content. Ingredients like rice syrup, honey, and corn syrup add alcohol to beer, but do not influence the color. 4 - Beer should be served ice-cold for best flavor This is not entirely untrue as there are certainly lighter beers that taste better ice cold. Who can deny the enjoyment of a near freezing beer after coming in from cutting the grass, or raking the rocks depending on your particular situation. However, the fact is, flavor typically diminishes when beer is served ice-cold. It may make for a thirstquenching, refreshing beverage, but often bears little resemblance to traditional beer. Several beers are, in fact, best served much closer to room temperature or slightly cool and are considered undrinkable when icy cold. This is especially true of complex beers such as Belgians. A general rule of thumb is the higher the alcohol content, the warmer the beer should be served. Cellar temperature seems ideal for many beers. 5 - “Beer before liquor, never sicker – liquor before beer, in the clear” This is common drinking advice shared but not scientifically true.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

In reality, alcohol is alcohol, and the overall quantity you imbibe will determine your resulting (in) sobriety or hangover. Drinking beer before drinking hard liquor may prolong the onset of inebriation. However, it won’t ultimately matter whether you drink beer first or last; it’s the quantity of alcohol that does the damage. 6 - Beer will raise your cholesterol levels Beer actually contains no fat and no cholesterol! Perhaps this is one reason that beers used to be advertised as good for your health. 7 - A good beer must be high in alcohol Many people unfairly associate low alcohol with low flavor. There are plenty of poor quality beers that are high in alcohol content, and the opposite is also true. Some of the famous Belgian and German beers have traditionally high average alcohol content – perhaps 8% or 10%. However, the alcohol content is only one feature and doesn’t necessarily account for the good taste. In England, many of the best mild ales have alcohol content of 4% or less. These beers were developed due to a higher tax on stronger beer. Of course, the advantage in finding good-tasting, lower alcohol beers is that you can drink more of it! 8 - Beer is ruined if warmed and then refrigerated This can be true, if you do it many, many times, and it will happen gradually. People think re-chilling beer will cause it to be “skunked”. Beer can be ruined by air, light and time. Temperature will rarely ruin a beer unless it’s extreme. Get fresh beer and store it in dark place, and it will be fine. Incidentally, “skunking” Continued on Page 46...

NAME THAT BEER!!!

Hello again beer lovers, today lets chat about yet another Local Beer but with a twist. Phoenix Ale Brewery has a new Imperial Porter that they want you to name! How cool is that? The porter is currently only available at the Brewery and in Growlers at Whole Foods locations around the valley. Name submissions can be placed at both or at phoenix ale.com. The contest runs through Feb 23rd with 5 finalists receiving a private party at the brewery and tickets to a Diamondbacks spring training game. My name submission was Black Betty, hope I win! Now on to the beer. As Imperial Porters go, this brew is quite drinkable and not as heavy as you might imagine. Flavours of coco, dark fruit and velvety roasted malt touch your palate at different points as you drink this one down. Head retention was quite good “On Tap” and leaves a nice thick lacing on the glass as you finish. Greg Fretz, co-owner of Phoenix According to Greg, Balance was the benchmark for this little gem. Ale tells me a large amount of black malt was used to achieve just the right amount of texture in character and in mouthfeel. At 7% ABV. this beer certainly qualifies as Imperial and with 60 IBUs there is ample bitterness for balance.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Great Food Pairings should include braised spare ribs with baked beans, a nice hot Chicken Tikka Masala or a buffalo burger stuffed with gorgonzola and bacon. Wow, now I am Hungry (and Thirsty). Booze pairings should be easy. A nice Cognac or perhaps brandy and cigars would make for a beautiful evening paired with this porter. As always thanks for tuning in and keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@gmail.com. Get those submissions in and let’s put a name to this ever important Local Brew. Cheers!

... continued from Page 44. comes from a chemical reaction with the hops in beer and certain wavelengths of light. Brown bottles filter out those wavelengths and thus are typically better for beer storage than other color bottles. 9 - Women don’t like beer I am hoping we really don’t need to go into too much detail no this one. It’s not true and really never has been. If you don’t believe me check out the AZ Girls Pint Out Facebook Page. 10 - Bottles are better than cans when it comes to storing beer.

Another myth that has long since been debunked. But one more time… cans do a better job of keeping out light and oxygen, two of the biggest enemies of beer, than do bottles. Any metallic taste is in your mind as cans are lined to prevent metal from ever touching the beer. Think about it, has anybody ever complained about a metallic taste in beer from a keg? Yes, there are BPAs (if you aren’t familiar with BPA, I suggest Google) in most can liners, however, they are the same liners that are in soda cans, and nobody seems worried about that. While there are non-BPA liners out there, the FDA has not yet approved them for beer and soda. Regardless, the effects of BPA seems so minimal that you would need to be consuming 100 cans of beer daily for 20 or 30 years before there was any cause for concern. 11 - Beer is vegetarian. Years ago, PETA had this strange marketing campaign where they encouraged people to drink beer instead of milk, the idea being that it’s because beer is vegetarian. PETA was mistaken. While many beers do not contain animal products and are safely consumable by vegetarians and vegans, quite a few are filtered with isinglass, a byproduct of fish. So, if you follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet), you’ll want to investigate whether your favorite brewery uses isinglass or some other animal product in their purification process. Barnivore.com has an exhaustive and

12 - Bock is brewed each spring after the brewing tanks are cleaned This one is so prevalent that it even made it into the pages of the landmark Time-Life book series, Foods of the World, in the Wine and Spirits volume. The idea is that the brewer cleans his or her tanks once a year and ferments the gunk scraped off the sides into a beer called bock. Suffice to say that any brewer who did this once wouldn’t be in business long enough to do it again. Bock is simply a German style of strong lager, originating in the town of Einbeck in the 14th century. The Bavarian accent of Munichers made this sound like Ein Bock. Incidentally, the billy goat that has become associated with Bock beers comes from the German word for billy goat, Ziegenbock. 13 - Draught gets you drunk faster than bottled beer (or vice versa) Here’s what gets you drunk: alcohol. Whether it comes from bottled or draught beer, wine, cocktails or straight spirits doesn’t matter. That said, carbonation levels can play a small part in how quickly alcohol is absorbed into your system, so heavier carbonation can lead to quicker intoxication. 14 - Wine is more complex than beer Another one that I think we can all agree is absurd. I enjoy a glass of wine as much as the next drinker, and I appreciate the complexities and nuances of a truly fine zinfandel or sauvignon blanc, but how can a drink made from a single ingredient, grapes, be necessarily more complex in flavor than one made from a Continued on Page 48...

minimum of water, malt, yeast and hops, all of which have numerous variations. In addition there is an almost limitless diversity of other ingredients? Ever find coriander or cumin notes in a wine?

There you have it, fourteen beer myths thoroughly debunked. Keep these in mind as you gear up for Arizona Beer Week, starting February 18th, and amaze your friends with your knowledge of beer as you hit up a different event every night.

SPORTS EXTREMISTS RISK CALCULATORS. NOT RISK TAKERS.

The stereotypical representation of many extreme sports athletes is one of long hair, liberal views and daring personalities, take Shaun White for example. Many outside the industry believe that only those who are willing to push themselves that bit further or attempt new, more daring stunts can be at the forefront of their sports and win the respect of their fans and piers. New research however, suggests that the best athletes do not consider themselves risk-takers, but instead calculate the risks involved very carefully and take action to reduce them as best they can. Among those interviewed in many recent studies were a number of Downhill Mountain Bike riders who regularly face dangerous situations as they trek over treacherous terrain in pursuit of the fastest time. rider remarked, “Sure this sport can be more dangerous than other sports, but we never take unnecessary risk. We will look at all the options before doing something new and if it’s not worth it, then we won’t do it. There is no sense in risking injury for us, as then we wouldn’t be able to ride” Although most extreme sports enthusiasts have lower fear levels than your average person and require more courageous feats to get their adrenaline kick, they also spend more time preparing for their actions and planning what to do if something goes wrong. It is not fearlessness that allows them to perform incredible feats, but instead immense skill and tireless preparation and practice. As extreme sports continue to move further into the public domain, it is likely that safetyconsciousness will increase and more regulations brought in to protect athletes and amateurs alike. Will this destroy the freedom that made extreme sports what they are, or improve their profile and promote greater participation? We hope the latter.

Duntdadadunn! The Waste Management Phoenix Open is back in town, boys and girls, which means a lot for us folk who like the good times. There are several things I love about this event; for instance I love that the environment gets to have fun as well. Señor Sustainability shows his appreciation by offering the patrons of this grass party his best garden: the beer garden. Frolicking around a golf course all day under our desert’s wintery, valentine sun, gives us the wonderful opportunity to openly drink all day and bring our happiness level up even higher at night with the Coors Light Birds Nest. That’s where all the beautiful hens and roosters will be celebrating the festivities and partying it up with the help of an awesome lineup. The Birds Nest goes up on Wednesday and starts the weekend off with the rock-hiphop-reggae band, Slightly Stoopid where you can rock rhythmically to the beat, helping you slowly remember the dance moves you learned from last weekend. Thursday evening, The Goo Goo Dolls will play the jams that will bring back the 90s when everyone loved the song, Iris, so you can wind down your week. Finally, Friday comes again with Will.i.am to spin tunes that will cause your body to vibrate with rhythm, getting you ready for the club afterward (maybe not after spending the entire day there—unless you’re a rock star, of course). Before the Birds Nest disappears for another year, 80s cover band, Flashback Heart Attack will perform songs you probably won’t find being played in downtown Scottsdale so enjoy them openly here. There are 2 stages so be sure to check the website for some other great bands and specific times. Wednesday, February 1st – Saturday the 4th. 3:30 pm – 10 pm. TPC of Scottsdale. For Tickets: http://tiny. cc/BirdsNestTix. $25 - $150. Ages 21+

Who’s your Caddy? Featuring Cedric Gervais at Axis/Radius Yeahhh, so the Phoenix Open is a pretty big deal. So big, that one of the best clubs in Old Town is having a themed dance party to commemorate Arizona’s favorite golfing event. Carry on wearing your cute golf outfits into the night and add some nighttime swag to your vibe so you can invest in some serious boogie time on the dance floor when one of Miami’s best DJs rocks the house. Hailing from France, Cedric Gervais has been a DJ since age 13 and became the youngest resident DJ ever at Paris’s famous mega club, Le Queen. He has since moved on to become resident DJs at some of South Beach’s most popular clubs and is gracing us with his presence this Friday at one of Scottsdale’s longest running dance venues, Axis/Radius. So pull out the polo shirts and argyle to help celebrate our favorite Open at one of the best clubs in Scottsdale. When you’re there and feel confident that your polo and pants are way more outrageous than everyone else’s, enter yourself into the contest for a cash prize. Friday, February 3rd. 10 pm – 2 am. Ages 21+

& ON * July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch.

The effect fear has on the body is almost identical to the effect of love.

Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition her visions. On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American woman of our time”. Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability the following year. In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to focus on my salad”. While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.” NEWS OR NEWS WORTHY???
