Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre Is Doing The “Lambeth Walk” With Me And My Girl!
Tony Award winning musical opens February 16, 2012
Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is proud to present the Tony Award winning musical Me and My Girl playing February 16 through April 8, 2012. This toetapping musical explodes with slapstick British humor and a feel-good love story. It’s 1937 and the Earl of Hareford has died leaving no apparent heir. The family has gathered, eagerly awaiting to hear how the estate will be split. They are shocked to learn that the unlikely heir is commoner, Bill Snibson, a pugnacious Cockney ne’er do-well from Lambeth. Hilarity ensues as the Duchess tries to turn Bill into a proper gentleman. The British blue-bloods eventually warm to his charm and so will you as you dance in the aisles to the “Lambeth Walk”.

Schools Celebrate AZ Centennial with The Phoenix Symphony
A simple little tale about a male equivalent of Pygmalion’s Eliza Doolittle, Me and My Girl became one of Britain’s most successful musicals. Me and My Girl opened on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre on August 10, 1986, and closed on December 31, 1989, after 1,420 performances. Directed by Mike Ockrent with choreography by Gillian Gregory, the production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Choreographer. Tim Curry played Bill Snibson in the extensive US Tour that followed the Broadway run. Me and My Girl plays February 16 through April 8, 2012 at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. Performances are Tuesday through Sunday evenings with select matinee dates. Ticket prices range from $28 to $49 with group discounts available for parties of 16 or more. proves that point. With visual effects that will cause you to duck, dodge and dive regardless of your age, the comedic adventure is the closest thing to guaranteed entertainment available on the silver screen. Granted, it is more of an amusement park ride than a major motion picture but that will not matter to you once a bunch of big bees swarm into the auditorium and berries bounce off of star Dwayne Johnson’s popping pecs into your face.” Grade: B

Joseph: “‘Pina’ is thoroughly hypnotic. Each dance in filmmaker Wim Wenders’s new documentary about choreographer Pina Bausch is beautiful – both aesthetically and thematically. In other words, the film is not only stunning visually but also emotionally. Moreover, each and every one of said dances tells an individual story that takes your breath away. However, tied all together, they make one extremely moving celebration of not only Bausch’s life but also life in general.” Grade: B

most notable works performed in stunning 3-D. Those unfamiliar with Bausch will be bored to tears. With no background information, the hour and 45 minute film grows tiring after countless dance numbers and talking heads fill the screen. Amazing cinematography aside, I’m not quite sure why this one has been nominated for an Academy Award®.” Grade: C-

Filmmaker Wim Wenders captures dancers in motion as a tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch. (PG – 104 minutes) Stan: “Wim Wenders, with more than 30 years of documentary filmmaking, pushes the bar of the ‘docudrama’ to a new level with the use of the dancers voice-overs as each is profiled, his use of 3D with forced perspective creates the sensation of attending live theater performances as we experience the presentation of Pina Bausch’s best known dance-theater works, culminating into a stirring portrait of the legendary choreographer; earning an Oscar® nomination as well as a BAFTA nomination (the British equivalent to the Oscars®) in the documentary feature film category.” Grade: B+ Randy: “Fans of dance will be in all of their glory with this ‘documentary’ about choreographer Pina Bausch. “It was something that I agreed to do because I was a little concerned about CGI being so popular a medium that it might overshadow puppetry. One of the things that I wanted to do was be a cheerleader for puppetry. What I love about puppetry is that it is immediate. What you see on TV is what you get when you meet these characters in person. That is something that you cannot do with animation or CGI.

capturing dance presented a special challenge and chose 3D to meet it. “I had been wanting to do a film on Pina for a long, I keep telling Pina I’m not ready yet, I wasn’t sure how one could capture the very essence of dance, I felt that my craft didn’t have the ‘goods’ or the tools. The cameras were a bit bulky for fluid moment and so forth. When 3D came about and the when first few films arrived in 2007, I realized ‘eureka’, there was finally a better cinematic language to film dance! I told Pina right away, now we can do it because now I can finally for the first time ever, capture the elements of dance, I can be with them, I can be in the same time and space. The key element of cinema is the illusion of time and space, and with the traditional camera in 2D to capture dance is like fish in water, and I was always outside of the aquarium trying to film them and I could never be in the water with my cameras and 3D was an excellent solution and I needed it badly. We started to shoot ‘Pina’ long before ‘Avatar’ came out

We tested for a year and a half before we started shooting and most of it was a prototype. At the time when we started in 2009 with our testing, I realized that it was all going to be worth it because I saw that there was this fantastic affinity between this new technology of 3D and dance, and in the end I became absolutely sure that I was going to bring out the best in each other!” – Wim Wenders

Special Features Jules Verne: Science Fiction/Science Fact By Stan Robinson I’ve often said that the translation of the term ‘science fiction’ is the basis of science molded into the fiction of imagination for presenting a viable premise for extraordinary storytelling. The source material for the current movie ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ is one of the most widely popular novels of the French novelist Jules Verne (1828-1905). Jules Verne, credited as one of the first writers of science fiction and the second most translated author in the world after Agatha Christi, with the imagination of anticipating later scientific and technological developments such as space, air, and underwater travel which he incorporated into his novels. ‘The Mysterious Island’ novel (1874), which features the famous fictional submarine Nautilus, is a sci-fi mainstay. Of the more than 80 books written by Jules Verne, the most popular are ‘Journey
to the Center of the Earth’ (1864), ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ (1870), ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ (1873), and ‘The Mysterious Island’ (1874). How movies from just these four novels: ‘20,000 Leagues’ over 14 movies / TV movies with the first in 1916; ‘Journey to the Center’ over 11 with the first in 1956; ‘Around the World’ with 9 and first in 1956; and ‘Mysterious Island’ with 16 and the first in 1929.
‘5 Star Day’ DVD giveaway! By Stan Robinson ‘5 Star Day’, written & directed by Danny Buday, is now available on DVD. Jake Gibson’s (Cam Gigandet) horoscope forecasts a perfect ‘FIVE STAR DAY’ the morning of his birthday. Little does he realize that what’s foretold to be a flawless day, unfolds to be far less than stellar when his world is turned upside down as all that could go wrong...does. His journey takes him from the west coast of California to the east coast of New York, to disprove the theory of astrology and answer some bigger questions about life, love, fate and destiny. You can win a copy of the DVD ‘Five Star Day’! Here’s how it works: Were you born on February 6? Share your birthday story in prose or poetry in 100 words or less on www.facebook. com/5StarDayfilm. Then on your Facebook page LINK IT BACK TO: www.facebook.com/5StarDayfilm The first 5 postings each day through February 10--the street date of the film--win a copy. Then, we’ll pick one EXTRA winner at random from any posts over the first 5, so that’s 6 copies per day, actually. Only one entry per person will be valid. Let’s see how similar (and fun) they are. Have fun!

Are You Ready To Get Serious About Losing Weight??
‘the interrupters’: Trying to stop the street violence
Lose 10 Pounds in 10 Days!
It’s a war without national boundaries, military Ameena uniforms or state-sanctioned weapons. But it is Matthews a war and an epidemic of violence raging on the streets of one of the largest U.S. cities. Yet the shootings in Chicago often go ignored. PBS’ gripping “Frontline: The Interrupters,” airing Tuesday, Feb. 14, spent a year following those trying to stop the violence in Chicago. The documentary is overly long, even after being cut 45 minutes, yet it is such an important topic that the film’s problems can be forgiven. The easily offended should know the two-hour film contains foul language, but if one is going to be put off by anything here, it should be that people are being murdered in our streets.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar Cocktail Menu Includes New Couture Cocktails, Modern Martinis
Limoncello Martini featured on Updated “5 for $6 ‘til 7” Bar Menu Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar updates its Cocktail Menu, with a mix of new elixirs and variations on current favorites. In addition to its signature cocktails, a bevy of talented mixologists across the country helped create ten unique cocktails expected to become “must haves” at Fleming’s. Half the fun of sitting down for cocktails is just choosing your drink, so Fleming’s divides its new cocktail menu into three distinct groupings — based on mood, taste and style: Retro Chic is a contemporary spin on the classics, like the surprising Sailor Daiquiri. A detour from frozen, sugary sweet daiquiris, Fleming’s Sailor Daiquiri goes vintage with Sailor Jerry Rum, and fresh pineapple and lime juices. Served icy cold and “up.” It’s elegant, powerful and delicious. By the way, the classicstyle daiquiri was JFK’s favorite cocktail.

Couture Cocktails are customdesigned recipes using chefdriven seasonal ingredients and signature spirits like the Mad Milagro Margarita: Milagro Silver Tequila, fresh lime juice and muddled fresh cucumber for the

You get the chance to feel like you are not here, being at a resort and all. Happy hour is from Monday-Thursday 4pm-7pm with various specials throughout the week. Mondays they offer $5 muddled cocktails, which are mashed up ingredients in a glass; it changes every week so it is always a surprise. One of my favorite places to go is a spot that not a lot of people really go to. They have a laid back atmosphere with the best music out of anywhere else on Mill Avenue. Hippies Cove is always my first stop of the night in Tempe. The happy hour is MondayFriday 4pm-7pm and you can get $1 jello shots and PBR’s, $4 margaritas, and $5 quesadillas, and $7 for a dozen hot wings! Their fish tacos are really good though with extra baja sauce in my opinion. I love that they always play those songs you have not heard in a while or just awesome Hip-Hop music which always gets me going for the night. 414 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281

LEFT HAND BREWING… RIGHT ON TRACK Left Hand Brewing has decided to take America back – one pour at a time. They want United States beer drinkers to declare independence from imported stouts. After 2 ½ years and hundreds of thousands of dollars in R&D, Left Hand Brewing Company debuted in a bottle to over a thousand people, & the world, on the 37th Floor of the Grand Hyatt during the opening night of the Great American Beer Festival, September 29th, 2011. But they weren’t just satisfied with one party in Denver. They are taking it the streets to bring this beer to your town. “We’ve had solid success with Milk Stout Nitro on draught, so we thought we would give our fans the option to take it home, too”, said Mark Sample, Left Hand Brewing Company’s Production Manager, and one of the brains behind the project. “Customers have really taken to Milk Stout on nitro. They’ve supported us around the country in bars & restaurants – psyched to have a nitro stout that’s made right here in the US,” said Chris Lennert, VP of Operations for the brewery. “Now we’re happy to offer Milk Stout Nitro in 6pks for them to take home.” Dark & delicious, this beer will change your perception about what a stout can be. Stout Nitro cascades beautifully, building a tight, thick head like hard whipped cream. The aroma is of brown sugar and vanilla cream, with hints of roasted coffee. The pillowy head coats your upper lip and its creaminess entices your pallet. Initial roasty, mocha flavors rise up, with slight hop & roast bitterness in the finish. The rest is pure bliss of milk chocolate fullness. Now that the folks at Left Hand have started rolling out the beer nationally, look for it in Arizona starting February 16th. That is the day that Left Hand will have a hit squad of brewery folks in Phoenix tasting, sampling and partying with Milk Stout Nitro. Over a two day period expect to see launch events at every Whole Foods, Total Wine and Sunflower in Phoenix, as well as a party each night to celebrate this amazing feat of American ingenuity. Thursday February 16th the party is at Papago Brewing in Scottsdale and the Friday party starts at the Whole Foods in Chandler and moves to The Hungry Monk. Details on these parties can be found elsewhere in this section. So far the beer has only been released in Colorado, Illinois and Texas but already the beer drinkers are lining up to sample and purchase this beer. There Continued on Page 46...

is no reason not to expect other states to embrace this beer as quickly as the first three did. We had the opportunity to get several questions answered from the folks at Left Hand including the proper method of pouring this beer to ensure that we get exactly the creamy goodness we want. Here is some information from our Q & A session. Q: Where do you get your nitrogen? A: We use only local, organic nitrogen that has not been fed any GMOs. Q: Do you use a special bottle? A: The bottle is specifically designed to release the beer as you empty it.

Q: What does the n2 do for you? A: Nitrogen forms small densely packed bubbles which create a beautiful head on beer. Nitrogen bubbles are also less resistant to breakage in the atmosphere, because our atmosphere is mostly nitrogen. This lends itself to long lasting, visually stimulating head. Q: Why does it cascade? A: It is due to the friction on the side of the glass. The bubbles on the side of the glass have to fight with the friction of the glass surface. The bubbles in the center rush up the middle and then get pushed to the side by the bubbles behind them. This causes a downward flow on the sides of the glass as they cannot flow up they flow down into the center and out. Q: What made you decide to do this?
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
A: Our Milk Stout Nitro bottle is designed to replicate our draught product that has been to successful. We love drinking our beer in our bars and restaurants, but wanted people to have that same experience at home. Q: When do you add the nitrogen? A: It starts in the brewhouse with designing the beer. We also take specific steps during fermentation, filtration and packaging to end up with the nitrogenated beer. Q: How do you get the nitrogen into the beer? A: Very carefully with tiny tweezers. (Editor’s Note – I think this is their way of saying that this is a proprietary method and it is none of our business, just be happy the nitrogen gets in there…but I may be reading too much into that.) Q: Why don’t you use a widget? A: We found that due to the unique physical properties of our Milk Stout, the development of a widget would be an unnecessary waste of millions of pounds, er… dollars. Q: Why is it necessary to “pour hard?” A: In order to force the nitrogen out of solution in the beer to create the desired head. This is similar to using a restrictor plate on a draft nitro faucet. Q: Whose idea was this? A: It was a total team effort. It didn’t take long for the whole company to buy in as we strived to become the first craft brewery to put nitro beer in a bottle. SONORAN BREWING IMPERIAL STOUT
Hello again craft beer lovers. Today let’s continue our journey through local beer wonderland and chat about Sonoran Brewing Imperial Stout. As spring approaches, the weather here in Arizona is still holding out on the chilly side and that means one thing, plenty of time left for big beers. For many years, this power house of a brew was known as the Inebriator and at 9.1% ABV. I’m sure you can imagine why. It pours completely opaque with a thick, creamy brown head that seems to last forever. Rich notes of coffee, coco and other earthy flavours abound yet are balanced by just the right amount of hop bitterness. 75 IBU’s to be exact. Lacing on the glass is impressive and as the beer begins to warm the earthy essences in the brew really begin to emerge. Leather, a touch of clove and even honey begin to emerge on the palate. There is a slight hint of alcohol warmth as you swallow, but it’s by no means off-putting, this is an imperial stout after all. Great food pairings should include pasta with a robust Tuscan meat sauce, a Cajun shrimp Po Boy with a spicy remoulade or even a burger smothered with melted gorgonzola and bacon. Great booze pairings might include a smoky Kentucky bourbon or a smooth single malt scotch at room temperature.PURE HEAVEN! As always keep sending those comments and questions to kingjamesswann@ gmail.com and don’t forget to Drink Local. Arizona Beer Week is right around the corner, will you be there? Cheers.

MILL AVE.
Seriously, they will. During Prohibition in America people took to drinking hair tonic and posing as members of the clergy to get alcohol. Sometimes people come together on a large scale in the never ending quest for free beer. In Australia on Easter weekend in 2001, a beer truck blew a tire and overturned into a river. The driver was able to escape but his cargo sank to the bottom of the river. Hearing about the accident, people gathered at the scene, some in full scuba gear, and spent the entire weekend recovering the beer. One man managed to get 400 bottles. Did they return it to the company? Of course not. Despite a warning from police that what they were doing was theft, the divers took off with the whole lot.

There’s something sexy about watching people get down on the dance floor to the rhythmic beats of Brazilian samba and seeing them sway and rock to island reggae. It’s even sexier when a funky live band is playing and setting the tone for the entire venue, creating an atmosphere not unlike an urban makeshift dance party being held in the streets of some exotic location like New Orleans. Her body begins to lightly pulse with each hollow tap of the drum, forcing her hips to strike from one side to the next in an attempt to move with the sound waves rushing through the air. Her arms slowly lift to the sky, allowing her fingers to swirl the notes floating through the crowded room like an orchestra conductor waving his baton. She is joined by others. Everyone is rocking, grooving to each instrument’s flavorful tone, each body contributing to an overall chilltastic vibe. You could be her. We could be them. All of us who live for music, culture, rhythm, and dancing should check out Delta Nove at The Sail Inn this Thursday in Tempe. Delta Nove is known for their rock-reggae-samba-funk music and has been touring the country for over ten years. Thankfully, The Sail Inn is known for hosting local and indie bands like them, giving Mill Avenue goers the option of seeing live music performing on a stage instead of on the street. Thursday, February 9th. 9 pm – 12 am on the outside stage. 26 S. Farmer Ave, Tempe. Ages 21+ Arizona Blues Showdown at The Rhythm Room It’s that time again. Singles Awareness Day is here and if you’re without a valentine you actually like, you’ve probably got the blues. What better way to dwell on your self-pity than by listening to some of Arizona’s best Blues artists at the best blues club in Phoenix. Or, on a more optimistic note, why not take your sweetheart to listen to some soul fulfilling music in an intimate setting where you can rejoice in finding the love of your life while whispering sweet nothings to awesome background music. This Saturday, John Primer, Barrelhouse Chuck, and The Rhythm Room All-stars will perform sweet sounds that will help wind down your night and add a soulful throb to your
heart. Saturday, February 11th. 8 pm. 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. $12 Cupid’s Hot Pop at the JW Marriot Desert Ridge Resort & Spa Cranberry Vodka is red, Hypnotiq is blue, dessert wine is sweet and so are you if you bring your Valentine to the JW Marriot Desert Ridge this weekend for their special cocktail, Cupid’s Hot Pop. Everyone knows there will be adult beverages involved to help celebrate the holiday that everyone either loves because they’re in love, or dreads because they’re alone and contemplating their worth as an individual. So I suppose sipping on this deliciously unique, red concoction may help lubricate any emotion felt during this holiday for lovers. Made with vodka, cinnamon schnapps, strawberry puree, simple syrup, and cotton candy flavored Pop Rocks, sipping on a Cupid’s Hot Pop is sure to be a new experience that can only add to an evening at this awardwinning, luxury resort. And if you’ve had too much of little Cupid’s drink, how convenient for you to already be at a hotel, a really nice hotel that has specials and packages to help you create a stay-cation with someone you love or are extremely attracted to. Stay classy and take a seat while you enjoy this cocktail with your sweet. Your chances of getting lucky after starting the evening here, are good--very good, indeed. Thank Cupid for it. still moving forward, but balancing only on the back wheel. You’ll need some strong core muscles to keep the bike in this position for long, but it’s sort of like riding a unicycle (with handlebars). You can also do a nose wheelie, which involves balancing on the front wheel while the back wheel is in the air, or a manual, which is a standing wheelie (as in, the bike is stationary).
The Basics of BMX Street Tricks One thing you could definitely say about BMX street tricks is that they’re not like riding a bike. In fact, they require coordination, precision and practice if you want to pull them off without landing on your head or getting some serious road rash. Although the pros make it look like child’s play, there’s a lot more to learning street tricks than simply emulating a video you saw on YouTube. You need to start with the right bike and make sure you use proper safety equipment (helmet, pads, etc.) before you attempt to try these tricks at home. And instead of going straight to a backwards flip off a ramp, perhaps you should try out a few basic moves to give you a feel for the sport and ensure that you’re comfortable before you go for something bigger. Here are a few beginner tricks to get you moving.

1. Ollie. This is a common move in skateboarding and it can also be done pretty easily on a BMX bike. It is a basic move that must be mastered before you attempt a number of other tricks, so learn it well. To pull it off, you need to stand with the pedals parallel and split your weight between the handlebars and the pedals. Then, while moving, you simply hop the whole bike. 2. Wheelie. This one may sound simple, but it requires concentration and balance if you don’t want to hit the dirt. While pedaling, pull up the front wheel of your bike so that you’re
3. Endo. This is something like a nose wheelie in that you will put your back tire into the air. But rather than doing it while moving, you’re going to hit the brakes and use the momentum to kick up and raise the rear of your bike into the air. If you’re having trouble, you can try a curb endo (running your front tire into a curb for extra stopping power), but be careful that you don’t get going so fast that a sudden stop throws you over the handlebars. 4. X-Up. This move is generally performed while doing a wheelie. While your front tire is in the air, simply turn your handlebars 180 degrees and then back forward before your wheel touches the ground. It looks pretty cool and it is the basis for a number of other tricks. 5. Barspin. Once you get a handle on the X-Up, you can move on to a barspin, which involves turning your handlebars 360 degrees while the front tire is in the air. It may sound easy, but you must be able to split your attention between balancing the bike and rotating the handlebars, so don’t try it until you’re relatively comfortable with a wheelie. You may be tempted to try some slick moves right off the bat, but be aware that most professional riders have been practicing for years. They’ve no doubt suffered their fair share of scrapes, bumps, and broken bones to get where they are, but through trial and error, they have developed some of the killer moves that make this sport appealing. If you want to get to their level, you’re going to have to start at the bottom. And if you find that you’re frustrated by the slow pace, just think how much longer it would take if you had to wait out a broken arm or leg.
