Salvador Dali once arrived to give a lecture at a London exhibition wearing a diving suit and diving helmet. Nobody could hear him. Eventually he began to asphyxiate in the suit, which had an airtight seal. The audience, thinking it was just a performance, applauded wildly until somebody finally popped open the helmet.

The concert will be preceded by a special screening of In Good Time: The Piano Jazz of Marian McPartland. ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’

‘Dorothy and the Witches of Oz’* A young woman (Paulie Rojas) discovers that her best-selling novels are actually based on suppressed childhood memories of her time in Oz and that she may be in danger of experiencing it all over again. (PG – 100 minutes) *Not made available for review.

‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’* While hiding out in Eastern Europe, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) must once again become the Ghost Rider when members of a secret church sect hire him to save a boy from Satan. (PG-13 – 96 minutes) *Not made available for review.

A 4-inch-tall girl and her family live in anonymity by borrowing items from a house’s human inhabitants – until a boy discovers her. Featuring the voice talents of Amy Poehler, Will Arnett and Carol Burnett. (G – 95 minutes) Stan: “Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who brought us the multiple award winner ‘Panyo’ (2008) delivers another delightfully charming movie in the style of animation by Japanese filmmakers touches our hears as well as prompting those lessons of acceptance, compassion, and understanding as the differences that make us unique to coexistent on a our shared planet Earth are brought to the forefront. The story is compelling enough for adults and basic enough for the younger ones for a uniquely special viewing adventure for the whole family!” Grade: B

‘Thin Ice’ Events spiral out of control when a greedy insurance salesman (Greg Kinnear) tries to con an old farmer (Alan Arkin) out of a rare violin. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview

5. (R – 94 minutes) Stan: “To use the title as a metaphor, the movie starts with a ‘thin’ premise at a deliberately slow pace as it establishes the lead character’s (Greg Kinnear) insecure and human flaws while easily sliding like a sheet of ‘ice’ into an intricate tale and themes of ‘grafters, flim-flam men, and those who would pull the preverbal wool over our eyes, taking on ‘cerebral contemplation’ as we the viewer examine the telltale clues presented throughout the movie, reinforcing the old adage that sometimes people aren’t always who they seem.” Grade: B Joseph: “Writer/director Jill Sprecher’s crime dramedy ‘Thin Ice’ is like watching a snowball roll down a hill with multiple cliffs. That is to say that the new movie starts off small before slowly but surely building as the story progresses to a point at which the conundrum that its characters face gets so gigantic that they no longer have any chance of stopping it. Unfortunately, just as those aforementioned cliffs cause that rolling snowball to take large leaps, twists have the same effect on this story which then leaves the viewer feeling frostbitten.” Grade: D

Joseph: “One would think that a movie titled ‘This Means War’ boasting a premise in which two men fight over a woman would feature a lot more scenes during which said men try to outwit, outplay and outlast one another. Granted, I may be thinking of some sort of hybrid of reality shows ‘Survivor’ and ‘Temptation Island,’ but such scenes are too few and far between in director McG’s action romcom. On the other hand, the scenes of that type that it does have are hilarious and the film’s entire visual appearance is extraordinarily exciting.” Grade: C

‘This Means War’ Once inseparable pals and partners, two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) turn their deadly skills and an array of high-tech gadgetry against one another after both fall for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon). (PG-13 – 98 minutes)

Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Stan: “Effectively intertwining the genres of a romantic triangle, a buddy film, and a high octane spy story, director McG who perfected his craft with years of episodic television and solidified his skills with the feature film ‘Termination Salvation’ (2009) starring Batman’s Christian Bale, presents a very lively fast paced film with a lot of everything for everyone, giving new meaning to the phrase ‘This Means War’” Grade: B Randy: “Two guys fighting over one girl. We’ve seen this before. What could have been an underwhelming, over-used storyline turns out to be quite an enjoyable film based on the likable performances by Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. Witherspoon always charms and Hardy is easily one of Hollywood’s newest stars (although he has been a familiar face overseas for quite some time). ‘This Means War’

(Rachel McAdams) memory and their bond after she awakes from a coma with amnesia. The movie is based on the true story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who relay their experience in a book that is now available in retail stores throughout the Valley. “It has brought tears to my eyes every time that I have seen it even though that particular car accident was in a completely different context. Our car accident was far more violent. It involved high rates of speed and sudden deceleration after impact with a 26,000-pound truck. Our car was demolished. Half of the roof was torn off. That being said, it brought back the momentary impact that I had experienced. I will never forget that entire accident from start to finish. “Channing and Rachel studied us. They evaluated what we did on camera for interviews from years past, they read how we lived our lives via our book and asked us questions as to certain things that occurred in our lives. To their credit, the characteristics that they portrayed and the chemistry they have is very similar to that of Krickitt and I.” – Kim Carpenter “It is a huge honor to have Channing and Rachel representing us and playing our roles in the movie. And it is very humbling. They are beautiful individuals and awesome people. We think that they did a fabulous job. My short-term memory is not great and it never will be because of the brain damage that I sustained during the car accident.

But it was hellishly difficult to make the film. We were robbed at knifepoint on day one, we were held at gun-point, they would extract money from us and the Rob nearly died of Malaria.” – Howard J. ‘The Dead’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Dead,”Rob Freeman plays the sole survivor of plane crash in a war-torn Africa where the dead are returning to life and attacking the living. The horror flick was written and directed by Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford. “It was shot in Ghana and Burkina Faso, which is a dry and barren terrain. It was not the safest place to be or the safest place to shoot a movie, either. But that came about because the character has to have a hard time surviving under the hot sun where there are no resources. It is like being back in time so, in effect, it was per-

“When I was a young fellow, I had a father who was a very tough Canadian outdoorsman. He was the coach of my ice hockey team and at one grueling practice all of the guys kind of laid down on the ice. After one particular drill, he came up to me and said, ‘I do not ever want to see you lie down on that ice.’ From that point on, I have never laid down. And I was not about to lie down on this film, either.” – Rob Freeman

‘The Double’ By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Double,” a senator’s murder – which bears the earmarks of a presumed-dead Soviet assassin – brings a CIA operative (Richard Gere) out of retirement. Topher Grace plays a young FBI agent with who said operative is forced to partner. The film was directed and co-written by Michael Brandt. “[My co-writer Derek Haas] and I have always loved [Tom] Clancy and [Robert] Ludlum books. I remember being 12 years old and picking up ‘The Hunt for Red October’ off of my dad’s nightstand and reading it. I did not understand any of it but thought, ‘Whoa! This is really cool!’ A spy thriller with a twist at the end has always been a genre that we have loved. We loved ‘No Way Out’ and ‘Three Days of the Condor’ and wanted to do something along those lines. It was kind of built into our DNA.” – Michael Brandt

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ By Joseph J. Airdo

In “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” a chain of events set off by Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) marriage, honeymoon and birth of a child yields a shocking development for Jacob (Taylor Lautner). Gil Birmingham plays Jacob’s father. Tinsel Korey and Julia Jones also star. “We did not need nearly the amount of security during the first one that we needed after that. You hear these stories of people trying to swim with scuba gear and paparazzi jumping in the back of trucks with tarps trying to get on the set. Even during the wedding scene in ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1,’ we had helicopters hovering over us. You cannot shoot with noise so there was not much we could do except drape these huge tarps in the trees so that they could not get a shot of the wedding dress.” – Gil Birmingham “I think that you cannot really focus on, ‘Am I going to bring [my character] to life?’ or ‘Am I going to set the mold that everybody is thinking?’ When everyone reads the books, they are imagining something different so you can never try to please everyone. You just have to do a great job in what you are doing, do your homework and just put all you have into it.” – Tinsel Korey “I remember feeling a ton of pressure in the very beginning because I had a sense that these people really care so much about the books and the characters. I felt a lot of weight on

my shoulders to do a good job bringing their character to life. There was definitely pressure in that. But now I do not feel pressure so much as I feel lucky to have gotten this opportunity.” – Julia Jones

4. South Pacific There are just so many ideal places to go in the South Pacific that they cannot all be named. Give yourself a lot of time and try to hit up as many islands as you can while you are there. Board shorts and a rash vest are all you’ll need here most of the time…and a surfboard of course.

THE WORLD’S TOP TEN BEACHES TO SURF If you love surfing, you probably also love traveling. Some of the best surfing in the world can be found at very remote spots on the globe. This is great because it gives you a chance to see a lot of beautiful places while you are participating in a sport that you love. There is no better way to get out and really experience nature in all of the places that it can be found. The following are the top ten beaches in the world for surfing; it may take you a while to reach them all, but you can start checking them off of your list as soon as tomorrow. 1. Kirra, Australia With an area called Surfers’ Paradise, it only makes sense that Australia would come in with the number one option. The Gold Coast is famous for its expansive beaches and excellent nightlife; it is even more famous for swelling waves that never seem to end.

2. Puerto Chicama, Peru This is a bit more of a rural destination, without all the night clubs and resorts that Australia can provide; at the same time, the surfing is what you go for. This place can claim to give you the longest ride in the world, clocking in at around a half a mile. 3. Canary Islands, Spain You can visit Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, though you may find a large number of tourists from Europe. You should instead head out to Lobos. The surfing here can be for beginners and professionals, part of what makes it so popular.

5. Hossegor, Cote D’Argent, France France is not a country that is synonymous with surfing, so this is a pleasant surprise. You will find great places to surf no matter how experienced you are, though they can be crowded during competitions. 6. Thurso, Scotland This is a little dangerous, with cold water surfing and rocks along the shoreline. That is, perhaps, what draws so many great surfers to the country’s shore. 7. Sunset Beach, USA This is a place for professionals. The Pipe Masters competition is held here every year because the surfing is so ideal. 8. Jeffreys Bay, South Africa They say that this is the best right hand point break in the world. When you surf it, you will find that they are not wrong. 9. Mundaka, Spain This is for cold surfing in fast waters. It is great, but make sure you have a wetsuit. 10. Uluwatu, Bali The coral reefs and tropical coastline make this look like somewhere off of a postcard. Goofy riders will excel here. As you can see, these beaches all have their own unique feel. They are scattered all across the globe. You will find surfers there who come from all different walks of life, from all different countries. While there are a lot of beaches that you can surf in the world, these are the ones that you cannot afford to miss. If you start with number ten and begin working your way up, you could plan out the best road trip — with considerable time spent in the air — that has ever been done.

For those outside the neighborhood, a bicycle makes the pub within easy access of the Light Rail. Kraus is also no stranger to alternative transportation. After circling the Valley in his popular food truck, Truckin Good Food, he has shuttered the mobile eatery to develop ++experience++. He now specializes in pop-up and guest chef events where he can be even more creative with his menus. After serious research of The Three Amigos, he is planning a range of movie-appropriate snacks that will also pair to Hanratty’s featured Arizona beers. The Bike-In begins with Previews from 6:30 to7:30 where a prix fixe sampler will be available for $10. This will include a sampler of snacks not available on the ala carte menu plus an Arizona brew still to be determined. At 7:30 the curtain rises for The Three Amigos. HAPPY HOUR

I think that it is always nice to find those real good restaurants that have great happy hour. You can have a beautiful atmosphere without hurting your wallet. Monday- Friday they have $5 appetizers and $5 cocktails, wine, and beer from their Aloha menu. Their crunchy golden lobster pot stickers are amazing, along with the tempura crusted spicy ahi roll! I paired a chardonnay with my food, and had a nice elegant experience. This is a great place to meet for a drink and some appetizers whether it is a date or a meeting. At night though, it does have a strong romantic vibe in my opinion, it feels super warm and cozy. 7151 West Ray Rd. Chandler, AZ 85226

Twin peaks is a new place that recently opened and is definitely getting a lot of comments, The girls attire consists of little shorts and tiny tops. I think that it will be a great place for people to go to watch sports. They have happy hour daily from 2pm-7pm with $1 draft beers and wells; they also have the same offer for their reverse happy hour daily from 10pm-11pm. The staff there is really friendly and I would go back with a bunch of my guy friends! 8787 East Frank Lloyd Wright Scottsdale, AZ 85259

Dam to Dam Big Bass Classic is back Anglers compete for $3,000 first prize Tall tales will abound as the Colorado River becomes the place to be for BlueWater Resort & Casino’s Dam to Dam Big Bass Classic Saturday, February 18 in Parker Arizona. Up to thirty-five teams can enter into this fishing event. And entries from past years have seen anglers from Arizona, California and Nevada compete. Teams will move up and down the River from the Head-gate Dam to Parker Dam in search of the biggest large-mouth and small-mouth bass in the Colorado River.

Pick up applications at BlueWater Resort & Casino located at 11300 Resort Drive, in Parker, or call 888.243.3360. Event registration takes place in the BlueWater Resort & Casino Conference Center Friday February 17 at 5:30pm.

Classic.

Teams will launch from the BlueWater Marina, the fishing boats are released at 10 second intervals from the buoy line just north of BlueWater’s Beach starting early Saturday morning. Then, come watch the Dam to Dam Big Bass Classic weigh-in at 3pm at the BlueWater Amphitheatre.

BlueWater Resort & Casino, along the shores of the Colorado River in Parker, Arizona, is fast becoming the entertainment capital of western Arizona. An enterprise of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, BlueWater features 200 river and mountain View rooms and

For more details on this or future events at BlueWater Resort & Casino, contact the Events & Entertainment department at 928-669-7036 or visit the website at www.bluewaterfun. com.

The tournament had been held every February and November – But In 2011 BlueWater decided to have one tournament in February and increase the first place prize money to $3,000! Remember, anglers have to use different fishing techniques in the spring versus the fall, because what the bass are hitting on, can be very different - depending on the time of the year - That’s the challenge of BlueWater’s Dam to Dam Big Bass

Café ZuZu Patio at the Hotel Valley Ho. I really enjoy nothing more than an inspired meal accompanied by midday cocktails, a little sunshine, and a well appointed patio. Recently, LocalLily.com rediscovered the patio at Café ZuZu at the Hotel Valley Ho (6950 E. Main Street, Scottsdale 480248-2000). www.hotelvalleyho.com

Small lunch plates range $7-16 - and I tell you, the Roasted Tomato + Goat Cheese Casserole is to-die-fordelicious. Entrees take a modern twist on classic American favorites like the Truffled Grilled Cheese $10 and The Famous ZuZu Burger $12.50 which includes Virginia bacon, stewed onions + Maytag blue cheese. Looking for something on the lighter side? Daily soup specials and salads are available, but I am more interested in the Twice Cooked Crispy Fries. Although the Roasted Spaghetti Squash $13 with braised greens, tomatoes, pine nuts + Parmesan crust sounds divine. Pair any of these menu items with the fragrance of Arizona orange blossoms in the air, a comfy seat on the patio, and a champagne cocktail and I’m really quite content. The Darkness Return! By Lizzie Lee Continuing their worldwide whirlwind of a tour which started in the U.K. The Darkenss are bringing their electrifying and outrageous rock n’ roll to North America in 2012, with a stop at Celebrity Theatre (440 N. 32nd St. in Phoenix) on Saturday, February 18th. They reformed in 2011 and are back with a vengeance. The reunion of the band has brought new life and momentum to the band as The Darkness comes back at us with new, but familiar energy. Not only are they touring it up across the UK after their 5 year split, but they are working on releasing a new album in 2012. The Darkness is already getting rave reviews from their UK tour and the band themselves are pretty pumped to “get back to the more organic rock sound” from their first 2003 album Permission to Land. This new album

promises to follow in suit of their first album, but they are spicing it up with Spanish and Latin influences. Even more exciting for The Darkness is their return to United States for the first time in 8 years for a tour. It’s not just U.S. fans that are excited to get this “tight trousered rock band” back here performing again, but they are too. Justin Hawkins mused that their “fondest memories of audiences is from the States.” More on The Darkness can be found at their various media outlets such as Facebook or Twitter. They are also available at www.theactualdarkness.com, where more information concerning their tour can be found. Show and ticket information is available at www.celebritytheatre.com.

Saturday, March 10th 2012, 8 p.m. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present pianist and singersongwriter Bruce Hornsby on Saturday, March 10, at 8 p.m. in the Virginia G. Piper Theater. Bruce Hornsby and the Range skyrocketed to fame with the hit song The Way It Is, which became the most-played song on American radio in 1987, earning ASCAP’s “Song of the Year” and the Grammy Award for “Best New Artist.” The Way It Is and such subsequent hits as Mandolin Rain and Every Little Kissquickly established Hornsby as an in-demand pop act. Despite his early successes, Hornsby

chose to pursue a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest and musical progress. That direction was manifested in his lengthy association with the Grateful Dead, with whom he has performed more than 100 concerts as guest keyboardist. He also has collaborated with Rickey Skaggs, Huey Lewis, Elton John, Branford Marsalis and Sting, to name just a few musicians.

Known for his versatility and improvisational flair, Hornsby embraces many musical styles, from classical and jazz to folk and bluegrass. This intimate solo concert features him on piano. The performance is presented with support from Nussbaum, Gillis & Dinner, P.C.

If you’re a baller, then go to Posh in Scottsdale on any night you wish. There, you can select ingredients you don’t want in your five courses and the chefs will create deliciously unique and innovative dishes that may include froggies, wild boars, alligators, and baby cow thymus glands a.k.a sweetbreads. Yummm sounds appealing, right?! Actually, the concoctions they come up with are the bomb.com. Or for you classier folk, their fares are delectably sophisticated with such creativity involved in their cuisine preparation, one can truly realize the meaning of improvisational, edible perfection. Anyhow, this place is not cheap. They don’t keep beer on their menu, which makes it somewhat interesting that they’re holding a kickoff party for Arizona’s 12th annual Strong Beer Festival, being held the following day at Steele Indian School Park. Peculiar, yes, but I’m personally thankful for it because it gives me the opportunity to go here and spend less than $200 on yummies. And they’re Japanese yummies, which I love and cherish thanks to my year spent living abroad after college in the land of raw fish and samurai. They’ll be serving Japanese street dishes like ramen and okonomiyaki (the pizza of Japan) as well as Japanese beers. I guess so you can save your craving for a stronger brew for the next day? Maybe. Pushing Posh’s pride to the side, menu items will start at a reasonable 10 buckaroos and there’ll be drink specials all night. So if you can’t go here on a regular night because you’re only a $30,000 millionaire, come on Friday and be posh. Friday, February 17th. 9 pm – 12 am. 7167 E. Rancho Vista Dr.

Downtown Phoenix Mardi Gras Pub Crawl

boobs—you might get in trouble for that… Mardi Gras at the Cityscape downtown is an all day event filled with festival and parade fun for the family but after the sun sets, tuck the kiddies to bed and let the alcohol gluttons loose on the streets to appreciate all the drink specials going down at our favorite bars. Ready for the list? Read it really fast. Here goes: Coach & Willie’s, Copper Blues, Downtown Pizza Lounge, Ghost Lounge, Lucky Strike, Majerle’s, Rose & Crown, Seamus McCaffrey’s, and Tilted Kilt—all of which have drink and food specials that are $5 or less. Thinking about driving? Don’t. Use your legs and walk from bar to bar or buy a wristband and take the Mardi Gras Trolley. Yes, there’s a trolley! I know! It’s so cute. For all you sinners out there, it’s officially the last weekend to be naughty before the ashes go on your forehead and you have to give up something like soda or chocolate-not only for God, but for your selfish intentions of losing weight (I know what you’re up to). We can’t all go to New Orleans or Rio de Janeiro for carnival, but we can go to Cityscape and pretend for one day. Saturday, February 18th. Trolley runs from 10 pm – 2 am. Ride wristbands: $8 in advance, $10 on the 18th.

Bust out the beads, masks, and boobs because it’s Mardi Gras in Phoenix town! Wooo! Well, maybe not the Got a hot event? Grand opening? Cool new promotion? Undiscovered gem? Please write to Evelyn at Nightowl@azweeklymagazine.com to possibly be featured here each week. Please include pictures when possible.
