It’s 1937 and the Earl of Hareford has died leaving no apparent heir. The family has gathered, eagerly awaiting to hear how the estate will be split. They are shocked to learn that the unlikely heir is commoner, Bill Snibson, a pugnacious Cockney ne’er do-well from Lambeth. In order to inherit his fortune Bill must be deemed a fit and proper person by the two executers of the will; Maria, Duchess of Dene and Sir John Tremayne. Hilarity ensues as the determined Duchess; much to the consternation of the rest of the family is convinced that she can turn Bill into a proper gentleman. But there is another hitch: Bill has brought along his girlfriend, Sally Smith, also from Lambeth. The Duchess presses on with her plans for Bill as she gives him lessons in how to speak and behave at a party she is planning in his honor. Sally, of course, will not be invited. At the Hareford Arms pub, Sir John tries to persuade the unhappy girl that both she and Bill should go back to Lambeth, but he is deeply moved when Sally reveals how much in love she is with Bill. The British
blue-bloods eventually warm to Bill’s charm and so will you as you dance in the aisles to the “Lambeth Walk”. A simple little tale reminiscent of Pygmalion’s Eliza Doolittle, Me and My Girl became one of Britain’s most successful musicals. Me and My Girl opened on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre on August 10, 1986, and closed on December 31, 1989, after 1,420 performances. Directed by Mike Ockrent with choreography by Gillian Gregory, the production was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Choreographer. Tim Curry played Bill Snibson in the extensive US Tour that followed the Broadway run. Me and My Girl is directed and choreographed by Ann Nieman. The production features set design by David Snyder, costume design by John P. White, Lighting design by Jacob Mishler and sound design by Chris Kockler. The roles of Bill and Sally are played by Jennifer Weingarten and Vince Wingerter. The cast also includes Justin Droegemueller, Jeff Duncan, Elizabeth Flanagan, Allison Fund, Katharine Gentsch, Paul Glodfelter, Regina Harbour, Derek Johnson, John Keating, James Lane, Joshua Lattimore, Bob Marcus, Kate Marshall, Susan Murphy Megan Orlowski and Christopher Russell.

Eric Hogan plays neighbor Stanley Gardner with comic genius and the overly suspicious detectives investigating the “muggings” are played by Andy Jacobs and Mark Kleinman. Mark Shannon plays the flamboyant neighbor Bobby, prancing in and out of scenes with leers and looks that has audiences howling. Run For Your Wife is a fast-paced, slapstick, laugh-a-minute romp that will leave you in stitches and begging for more. Hilarious one-liners, mistaken identities and improbable situations have had audiences doubled over with laughter. The Broadway Palm Concert Series continues on February 28 with Strait Country, A Tribute to Country Music’s Living Legend – George
Strait. On March 5 That Kool Band returns with their great harmonies and flashy guitar work in their fabulous Rock & Roll tribute to the 50’s and 60’s “At The Hop”, The 3 International Tenors return for a St. Patrick’s Day matinee performance on March 17 and The Dutton’s will have two performances of their popular show on March 19. Coming in April - AZ Diamond presents their stellar tribute to the legendary Neil Diamond on April 16.

The story of an ordinary London cabbie who somehow finds himself with two wives, two homes and two completely different lives suddenly finds his life unraveling in a spectacularly bad fashion when he is injured in a mugging and the police return him to the wrong wife. Rob Watson plays the devious but loveable John Smith. “My mom moved my family out there when I was entering junior high age so I spent a good decade there going to school,” explains Landau, noting that he went on to attend Arizona State University where he studied broadcast journalism. “I got primarily C’s because I wanted to make everything funny and my teachers did not agree with that.”
In 2008, Anchor Bay Entertainment picked up a horror film titled “Bryan Loves You” that Landau had written and directed. However, prior to that, the filmmaker wrote and directed a comedy called “Take Out” that has yet to attract a distributor. Both movies were shot entirely in Arizona, utilizing locations in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert and Queen Creek. “I would be a real advocate for filming in Arizona,” says Landau, noting that the state was very accommodating during both of his productions. “If you start at the northern part of the state and go all of the way down south to the border, you have so many dif-

most part, there was always humor in our home. He always made me laugh no matter what. Even if I was angry with him, he could always get a good laugh from me. I think that I was one of his biggest fans because I laughed at everything he said. A lot of his material came from real life. Movie News The History of “Oscar®” By Stan Robinson The Oscar® statue is movie’s greatest prize, as the motion picture industry prepares for its biggest awards presentation: the Academy Awards®, commonly know as the Oscars®. The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, formed
in 1927, is a professional honorary organization of motion picture artists and craftsmen, with the primary goal to advance the arts and science of motion pictures. The gold statue depicts a knight holding a crusader’s sword, standing on a reel of film with five spokes, signifying the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians. The award is 8.5 pounds in weight, 13.5 inches tall, and cast in Britannia metal and plated in 24-karat gold, with a round, black marble base.
Early on award winners were announced before the ceremony allowing newspapers to have the winners listed in late-night editions. However, newspapers began printing the Oscar edition earlier in the evening, and by 1940, ceremony attendees could pick up a paper and find out who won while on their way to the ceremony. Perhaps sensing that this early notification would bring an end to people actually attending, and to add the suspense that we now associate with the ceremony, the Academy began keeping results in the sealed envelopes that we know today. Now, when the Oscar presenter says, “and the Oscar goes to…” we’re all finding out the winners at the same time. This Oscar® night, Sunday, February 26, 2012, millions of people throughout the world will watch the show on ABC-TV. The Oscars® is an American social occasion, the place where the popular and powerful, walk the ‘red carpet’, and go to see, and be seen!
When the statue was created in 1928, it was referred to as the Academy Award of Merit. Several stories lay claim to naming the statue Oscar, the one that the Academy supports is then Academy librarian Margaret Herrick remarked that the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar(Pierce). Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival in Chandler Announces Music Lineup The Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival, scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2012, recently announced its lineup of national music acts. Face to Face, Goldfinger, and Voodoo Glow Skulls will rock out the popular festival that celebrates the rich American tradition of BBQ, brew and bands. The Festival will begin at noon and run until 8 p.m., but reach a fever pitch at 2 p.m. when Buck-O-Nine, an American ska punk band from San Diego, kicks off an impressive lineup of national bands. Then at 3:15 p.m., the Voodoo Glow Skulls ignite the action with a 45-minute set of frenzied ska punk. Goldfinger, a California ska punk band that got its moniker from the James Bond film of the same name, hits the stage at 4:30 p.m. for a furious one-hour set. Goldfinger reached No. 5 on the U.S. record charts with Here in Your Bedroom. The Festival headliner is Face to Face, taking the stage at 6 p.m. for a two-hour set of in-yourface, raucous So Cal punk. Face To Face rose to fame in the 1990s with its album Big Choice, featuring radio hit Disconnected. Professionally produced by HDE Agency, the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival will transform the streets of downtown Chandler into a huge backyard
To accommodate the growing number of BBQ fans, HDE has more than doubled the amount of event space, food vendors and kegs of beer from 2011. The 2012 Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival will span the entire AJ Chandler Park East and West as well as connecting Arizona Ave., which will be closed from Buffalo St. to Boston St. for the festivities. The address is 5 S.Arizona Ave., Chandler, AZ, 85225. HDE is pulling out all the stops this year with a massive event featuring more than 50 BBQ restaurants and food purveyors dishing out more than 20,000 lbs of mouth-watering pork ribs, pulled pork, brisket and chicken – paired with the state’s finest craft beers. To wash it down, more than 200 kegs of ice cold craft beer will be tapped throughout the event. SanTan Brewing Company is set to feature their four core brands, which pair well with the sweet and savory flavors of BBQ fixings. Also, craft beers from Sonoran Brewing, Grand Canyon Brewing, Papago Brewing and Thunder Canyon Brewing will be flowing throughout the afternoon. The Surprise BBQ Festival Kicks Off Spring Training in Surprise, AZ Just before Opening Day of 2012 Spring Training at Surprise Stadium, a BBQ Festival will set the tone (and by

STRONG BEER FESTIVAL / ARIZONA BEER WEEK An Inside Look….. Strong Beer Festival is here and gone, and what an event it was. More on that in a little bit, but we are right in the middle of Arizona Beer Week and despite the fact that it is almost over, there are still quite a few things going on, including some of the best events of the week. So let’s recap the festival and then move on to how to finish out Beer Week. If you remember the Strong Beer Festival in 2011, it was a rainy mess. 40 degrees, 40 mile an hour winds and a rainstorm that would make Noah work just a little bit faster. Despite that there were still 2,000+ attendees and a wonderful time was had by all. Just one short year later and the most successful Strong Beer Festival ever took place. It was a perfect day, sunny but cool enough to be comfortable, a light breeze and 3,500 craft beer lovers all in one place, Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 breweries were pouring some of their specialty beers and the crowd was drinking every drop they could get.

Too many highlights to list them all, but we will try to get a few mentioned. Bell’s Brewing tapped a keg of Hopslam at 3:00 PM and the line at that booth grew almost immediately. There was a whole lineup of some of the top Colorado brewers including Left Hand, Ska, Breckenridge,
Oskar Blues, Great Divide, New Belgium and Redstone Meadery set up by the stage. People loved the TNT from Left Hand, as well as the 72 Chocolate Imperial Stout from Breckenridge. Ska had their ProAm beer from last year’s Great American Beer Fest, Sethvleteren on tap and it was a Lips of Faith Day at the New Belgium tent as they brought the two current entries, Coco Mole and Biere de Mars, along with two older ones. Odell’s had several special beers including a firkin tapping of Footprint, and in the special category, Doug Odell spent almost all of his day

working the booth. If you missed out on two amazing specialty ciders from Crispin, Barrel Aged Marvin and Wonderwall, you missed something special. Right next door to them were a couple of special treats…Blue Moon brought GABF medal winner, Vintage Blonde as well as Raspberry Cream; and Tenth and Blake unleashed their Brewers Unleashed program with a Honey Braggot and a smoked chocolate porter aged in Cognac barrels. We also had an amazing Barrel Aged Imperial Stout from Lost Coast as well as OldeBluehairbarleywine from Big Sky Brewing.

Plenty of local beers were available. SanTan Brewing had some amazing beers in addition to a couple of their core beers, and Papago was well represented as always. Thunder Canyon was sporting new tap handles as well as Steve Tracy’s excellent beer, and Uwe from Sun Up had several outstanding beers. Sonoran captured some imaginations with a cask conditioned Inebriator stout aged with raspberries, and there was some buzz surrounding their upcoming Chef Series of beers. Hop Knot IPA I love It In The Can!
by “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today lets continue on our quest to learn more about local beer and focus on Hop Knot from Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe AZ. Four Peaks has been in the business of brewing great local beer since 1996 and has won quite a few awards and GABF medals along the way. It’s important to note that Four Peaks also employees the only female head brewer in the state of Arizona. As many of you know, Hop Knot is indeed one of my favorite local brews. I love the crisp bitter citrusy flavour imparted by the use of seven different hop varieties. It pours a slightly orange golden straw colour with a thick white head and leaves a very nice lace on the glass as you finish it, and three more. Oops, did I say three more? Writing is thirsty work! What I like most about this beer is the big hop character imparted without and extreme amount of alcohol. While not a session beer at approximately 6% ABV, Hop Knot can most certainly be had in fairly large quantities without putting you over the edge. Great food pairings should include British Style Fishand Chips, a Hot Roast Beef Grinder with gravy or even an everyday bag of Salt & Vinegar crisps if you fancy keeping it simple. Great booze pairings should include a generous shot of Hendricks Gin to sip on or perhaps a Kettle One on the rocks with a slice of lime.

I know many of you still haven’t come round to the virtues of canned beer but I shall say this one more time, think of a modern beer can as a tiny keg. themselves to the Arizona beer drinker with a couple of special beers including a craft malt liquor, a blueberry vanilla wheat and an amazing chocolate stout. There were quite a few other great beers floating around. Some great beers from Mother Road out of Flagstaff, including the Baconator were enjoyed, as were beers from Pizza Port in California and Big Dogs out of Las Vegas. Another pleasant surprise was Noble Ale Works out of Anaheim who had an Imperial IPA that impressed quite a few people. But enough about the past, what about the future? What is left to do this week? Whole Foods Chandler is featuring California Breweries and Trophy’s in Queen Creek has an Alaskan Brewing Beer Dinner, while Papago hosts a Brewers’ Shuffleboard Tournament while also having a New Belgium Sour Night featuring Sensory Expert, Lauren Salazar. Saturday wraps up Beer Week and you can start out at OHSO on Camelback for a nice breakfast before heading over to Papago Brewing for their Brewing up Hope event to benefit the M.I.S.S. Foundation. Brewing up Hope will also feature a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Arizona craft distribution pioneer Little Guy Distributing. Look for the original owners of Little Guy to be in attendance and several brewers are bringing special treats for the birthday boys. There are still a couple of days to take advantage of week-long food and beer specials at Chop and Wok, Original Wineburger, Garage Wine and Tap, Rico’s, Taps and more. A new bar just opened up in Scottsdale called Ventura Sports Grill, and it is the only smoking bar there is; besides a casino. This place is located on the Indian reservation, so that makes it possible for it to be available to smoke. They have happy hour all day, every day; I love it. They gutted the place and put garage doors on the patio that they open up once the sun is down. Domestic drafts are $2 and premiums are $3.25, which is such a great deal. They have awesome burgers and a killer staff. The owner there is a cool guy who likes to get to know his guests. Pizza is one of those food items that everybody seems to enjoy around the world. I have lived in my complex for a few months now, and was just barely introduced to Humble Pie. I love my Red Devil Pizza and all, but this place is amazing. It has a more updated feel to it than the other places that I usually go to. They have happy hour every day from 3pm-6pm and you can get $5 glasses of wine or ½ of select bottles of wine. I suggest ordering their small plates, because the food is pretty generous. Successful beyond their wildest dreams, the infamous comedy duo Cheech & Chong defined an era with their hilariously irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holdsbarred comedy routines. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong’s phenomenal success began on the standup comedy circuit, which led to nine hit comedy albums and eight hit films. Their third album Los Cochinos, released in 1973, earned a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. Big Bambu, their second album, was the biggest selling comedy record of all time in 1972 and remained so for many years. Their stunningly successful comedy streak transitioned to film in 1978 with their first movie, Up In Smoke, the highest grossing comedy of 1978, topping $100 million at the box office. Cheech and Chong co-wrote and starred
Cheech & Chong’s first movie in 25 years, Hey, Watch This!, was released on 4/20, 2010 via DVD, Blue Ray, Video On Demand and digital download. The film documents the best buds’ 2009 triumphant return to the stage and offers new sketch comedy centered on stoner antics surrounding the show. Movies like Half-Baked, Friday and many films by the directors Kevin Smith and Judd Apatow all have direct roots in the comedy of Cheech & Chong. Until now, Cheech & Chong’s stoner standup has been solely a sweet-smelling memory in minds of many an aging boomer, but the multiformat release of Hey, Watch This! presents such classic comedy bits as “Blind Melon Chitlin’,” “Two Dudes In A Car,” and “Let’s Make A Dope Deal!” to a new audience of young marijuana aficionados. You see, SPACE 55 is dedicated to experimental theater and often goes boldly where other theaters fear to go. An intimate venue run by people passionately devoted to the theater arts – SPACE 55 is warm, friendly and bursting with creativity. With only 50 seats, Space 55 is tiny. The front row of seats is only a foot or two away from the stage and often you'll even see them put a couple extra chairs on the side of the stage and sell those seats too! Take the current play, Night of the Chicken 2: "Feisty teenager Andrea (Andi) Hafferton struggles with the pressures of school, the cross-country team and a tendency to mutate into a ferocious 'werechicken' during the most inconvenient times." Ok, didn't see that coming....did you? At first, this sounds over the top. But this play, directed by Shawna Franks, blends wickedly funny situational humor with deep insight into the awkwardness of puberty. Much credit must be given to a brilliantly original script written by local talent, Carrie Behrens. While the plot line is hilariously original, one must also give a lot of credit to the onstage "Foley Artists" doing live sound effects, similar to how an old time radio play was done. In a world where stock sound effects can be bought by the thousand and mixed to order on a computer, it's a blast to see live sound effects done throughout the show, on stage. The lead is well played by Justine Hartley. Just imagine how hard it is to transform into a were-chicken without use of costume changes or special effects using only acting skills and a few thrown feathers. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

MOUNTAIN BIKE MADNESS What To Look For Before Buying a Second-Hand Bike… Good mountain bikes these days are by no means cheap. However, a knock-on effect of their expense is that they are being built with much stronger and more durable materials, meaning there are literally thousands of great second-hand bikes out there for a fraction of the cost of a new one. You just need to know what to look for. There are usually many elements to a second-hand mountain bike and each bike tends to vary in its make-up. Outlined here are the key points to look out for on the more common components.

Brakes
Turn the bike upside-down and check the condition of the rims. Look out for dents or fractures in the metal and spin both wheels to see if they run true. Any problems with the rims will hinder performance and might mean you’ll need to fork out for a new pair straight away. Check each spoke individually for tightness or damage. Spokes can be tightened or replaced easily but loose spokes can be an indication of a misshaped wheel. When spinning the wheels, pay attention to how the bearings function. The wheels should spin almost silently and with very little resistance. Any noise or resistance to the wheel turning could be a problem with the bearings and may mean they need replacing.
There are a number of different types of brake used on modern bikes but they all do the same job, so the best way to test them is to get on the bike and use them to stop. Use both brakes individually in order to highlight any problems and look out for weak braking power, excessive noise, shuddering or having to use a lot of hand force to engage the brakes. Also, check the brake cables for any fraying or splitting…any damage to the cables can spell trouble for braking power, especially for hydraulic brake reservoirs, so give them a good inspection. To be honest, most problems can be corrected by making small adjustments, but be prepared to pay for new cables, pads, levers and even brake-sets if there is significant wear/damage. Frame The frame is arguably the most important part of the bike to inspect. Almost every frame is different but there are common elements that should be checked. First, examine the welds in the frame. Are there any cracks or clear weak spots? How about the top tube and down tube, are they in good condition? Don’t be afraid to apply a reasonable amount of force to each part of the frame, it should be able to hold up to a lot. If you see any weakness or excessive movement, then the frame is severely compromised. In some instances, the frame can be re-wielded or strengthened but it’s unlikely to be worth your time - and there are plenty more bikes in the sea. The general condition of the frame should be good. If there are lots of dents or nicks in the frame, it may suggest the bike’s had a lot of use or has been badly treated. Suspension As with other elements of a mountain bike, suspension can come in many forms, so again the best way to test it, is to use it. To test the front forks, repeatedly apply pressure downwards on the handle bars and see how much travel there is in the forks. Look out for restricted movement or too much movement – both of which can suggest damage. Remember however that many types of suspension allow for adjustments to the travel in order to give a firmer or softer ride, so test at both extremes that the forks

offer. Some forms of suspension use oil in the forks. If this is the case, then clean both forks, apply some downward pressure on the handle bars and see if there is any oil on the forks when the suspensions expands back out again. If there is oil, there’s most likely a problem with the fork seals and they’ll need replacing. To check the rear suspension, place pressure downwards on the saddle. Like with the front forks, there should not be too little or too much movement. However, advances in rear suspension have allowed adjustment to the travel here as well, so take this into account. Chain Depending on quality, the price of a new chain can be quite steep, so you’re going to want to inspect the condition of the current one. A good chain shouldn’t have any rust on it, it should be well-fitting and each link should be able to pivot on either side. If two links will not move independently of each other, then they can very easily be replaced. But beware, one locked link often means there will be others. Tip the bike upside down and give the chain a good few rotations. It should be smooth, quiet and easy to turn. To reiterate, the best way to test a used mountain bike is to give it a good ride. If everything on the bike is in good condition, the seller shouldn’t mind you testing it. And if there are any problems, they will soon become apparent.
