SHOWUP.COM HOT SEAT OF THE WEEK Dead Man’s Cell Phone Presented by Actors Theatre at Herberger Theater Center After you’re gone, how will you be remembered? Jean is just trying to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee in a café, when a cell phone belonging to the man at the next table starts to ring. And ring. And ring. Jean realizes the man isn’t answering it because he’s dead. Out of confusion, annoyance and the tiniest bit of sick curiosity, she answers his phone. So begins Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative new comedy by playwright Sarah Ruhl. Lorca in a Green Dress Presented by Teatro Bravo! at Phoenix Little Theatre Through March 3 Teatro Bravo is pleased to present the Arizona premiere of Lorca in a Green Dress by Nilo Cruz, directed by Raymond King Shurtz. This intriguing play covers the areas of life and death, such as what comes next against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. The play takes on added significance with the current political climate and the rise of the conservative movement in the United States. The play covers the crossover to death of the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca after his murder by the fascists in 1936.

Nilo Cruz, Pulitzer prize winning playwright for Anna in the Tropics, has crafted an exhilarating poetic theatre experience on the life and death of Federico Lorca, poet, playwright, and artist. Salvador Dali, Lorca’s loves, his family, his ghosts, all come for a visit to the Lorca Room, to help this exceptional artist realize that death is just another step in the journey of being human, even when an artist’s vision is immortal.

The 24th Annual Arizona Renaissance Festival

Thru April 1st 2012 / 10am – 6pm It’s easy! Take a trip back in time to the wildly popular and entertaining Arizona Renaissance Festival. The annual faire begins at 10am every Saturday and Sunday thru April 1st and will be open on St. Paddy’s Day as well for plenty of unique fun with family and friends. Today’s audience wants to be more than spectators. They want to participate and be surrounded by their entertainment as they seek to escape the everyday world. At the Festival, the audience is a special guest in another place and time. This Festival transports visitors to a European-style country faire filled with an agreeable rabble of knights, rogues, royalty and craftsmen, all roaming throughout a 30 acre charmfilled village with 200 quaint shops, 12 stages of non-stop entertainment, an arena for full-contact armored jousting, kitchens, pubs and peoplepowered games and rides. All the Festival is a stage with a cast featuring more than 2,000 brightly costumed actors, dancers and musicians. These are the amazing people who populate this bustling fair to ensure a good time for the nearly 250,000 visitors who mingle into the endlessly wacky and unpredictable medieval mayhem.

ARTS! Cover Story

THE 24th ANNUAL ARIZONA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

The Renaissance Festival experience is meeting and interacting with these colorful characters, shopping for arts and crafts, and taking in a selection of over 150 shows every event day. There is a great variety of food for feasting, and a bevy of beverages including Medieval Margaritas, Da Vinci Coladas, Dukes of Daiquiri, wine, honey mead, beers and ales, along with soft drinks and lemonade. A popular attraction at the Festival are the live jousting tournaments held three times daily, complete with knights on charging horses, clanging weapons and a great deal of braggadocio. The 16th century Festival is home to many popular traditions including chomping down on a giant roasted turkey leg, and also features demonstrations of time honored crafts such as weaving, jewelry making, glass blowing, blacksmithing and pottery throwing. A most special event within this giant event is The Pleasure Feast. This is a one and a half hour five course medieval feast with live music and comedy entertainment, all you can eat and drink, plus festival souvenir. With limited seating twice daily, advance feast reservations are recommended.

Farmers Market Tips.

ACT OF VALOR Rated R NOW PLAYING

The Local Lily Go To Guide {Spring 2012} is now available for FREE download at LocalLily.com. Inside is a list of my favorite farmers markets all in Scottsdale, Phoenix and the East Valley. Below are some tips to make the most of your trip to the market. Arrive early for eggs & first pick of produce. Eggs often sell out quickly. Arrive late for deals. Often vendors will reduce their prices at the end of the market rather than packing them back up again.

GONE Rated PG-13 NOW PLAYING

Bring shopping bags. Bring a market basket or bags with you. Not all vendors have take-away bags. Take small bills and a pocket of silver. Big bills are a pain for sellers and exact change makes transactions go faster. Most items are priced that nickels and dimes should do you.

Are You Ready for Sexy?

Take a list. It is easy to overbuy or be overwhelmed. Have a rough idea of what you plan to cook ahead of time.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

to find solutions for the adaptation. I had to define what was the most important for me in this very rich novel consisting of a lot of interesting events. I had to get rid of everything that was not on the straight line of Watanabe’s psychology. I wanted the audience to be as close as possible to Watanabe’s mind. “There is a music inside of me - and during the whole process of making this movie, I had to confront everything I was doing to this inner music that works as a reference of the right tone. We’ve only lived a tiny part of the childhood yearnings we had when we were young, when we were full of assertions and certainties that we proclaimed with tears in our eyes. Gone too are the enormous fears we feel in love. Then we are caught by a poignant melancholy – a melancholy of existence – that even a renewed feeling of love would only increase its intensity.” – Tran Anh Hung

Harrelson’s character who demonstrates that rationalization of one’s actions based on where that line is drawn, is that moral component which equals those shades of grey.” Grade: B Randy: “An otherwise standard-issue ‘dirty L.A. cop movie’ is saved by an impressive performance by Woody Harrelson. While the context of the film is all too familiar, the script does allow Harrelson to flex his acting muscle in a nomination-worthy performance. This little film will unfortunately get little play and attention at the box office.” Grade: BJoseph: “Writer/director Oren Moverman’s new movie ‘Rampart’ is a compelling character study complemented by a powerhouse performance by star Woody Harrelson. Moverman introduces a refreshing nuance to the corrupt cop persona with which Harrelson has the opportunity to reflect emotions ranging from top-of-the-world superiority to rock bottom depression. Unfortunately, the crime drama lacks a coherent narrative arc and features some strange cinematography that is not only distracting but downright annoying.” Grade: C

Filmmaker Tran Anh Hung (‘Norwegian Wood’) By Joseph J. Airdo “The book was good and powerful in the way it awakened what was buried inside of us. While reading the book, it seems like we are revising the history of our emotions with a great sense of melancholy. I thought it was a challenge to bring such a subtle feeling to the audience. And the more we have to express something subtle, the more we have to work on the specific language of cinema. That was quite exciting. “I still wonder if the source material is the book or the emotions it created in my heart. Of course, I read and reread the book many times, trying to find the secret mechanism of the book that works on a very intimate level in its relationship with the reader. But I also looked inside of my emotions

But Oren was not too pleased with that, so we went back to the script and found this crippled man and thought that would be efficient yet not take too much time away from the making of the picture. “I spent time integrating into Skid Row in Los Angeles, sleeping out there for a bit, and that helped enormously. I do not know if I have even fully processed that experience. It is so easy to avoid eye contact. It is so easy to turn a blind eye to a person – a human being – on the street. We hurry our step and we pretend that we do not see them but they see us avoiding them. I learned how easy it is to slip and fall off of the rails in this country. “There is always a huge opportunity for growth being a gun for hire – working with different people, learning how to interact with them and

Star Day’ project. As soon as I read it and met with Danny Buday the director, I fell in love with him, the script, and everything kind of fell into place. Danny, who also wrote it, gave me the freedom to explore and experiment with character nuance choices while some directors can be very specific with defined character traits - and it can be a battle. Danny was extremely open- minded, so it turned into a collaborative art form which is exactly what you want - and I love him for it!” – Cam Gigandet

‘Family Affair’ By Joseph J. Airdo

In “Family Affair,” which will air 9 p.m. Thursday, March 1 on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, filmmaker Chico Colvard revisits a seemingly random act from his past that detonated a chain reaction that exposed unspeakable realities and shattered his family. “As I was filming, the camera sort of created this safe distance between myself and the gravity of [my sisters’] stories. I could get caught up in the framing of a shot or making sure that the sound was OK and that the batteries did not run out. It would only be at the point that I returned to Boston and actually sat with the footage that the real weight of what they were saying they had experienced and their courage to survive and overcome that really floored me. I had to learn how to build up some safe guards just to be able to get through the footage, put on my director’s hat and shape a story.” – Chico Colvard

Nourish, Healthful Dining. Vegans, gluten-free, and raw are trendy dining buzzwords these days that many diners equate with bland, healthy-for-you fare. So what’s a local foodie to do when watching your waistline equals healthful dining? The LocalLily.com Go To Guide {Spring 2012} is full of dine and detox options in Phoenix, Scottsdale and the East Valley. Nourish (7147 East Highland Avenue, Scottsdale 480-684-2233) for example, offers a variety of delicious options including dietary specialties that cater to vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, lactosefree, soy free, nut free and egg free restrictions. And don’t worry there are lots of items for ‘regular’ eaters to. Personally, I’m smitten with the Avocado and Sweet Potato salad $6.50. The owner of Nourish has Celiac’s Disease and a variety of other food allergies. This means that strict procedures are in place to prevent cross-contamination. Other menu items include the Green Burger $10, made with rutabaga, zucchini, carrots, avocado, coconut milk, red pepper, potato, almonds, quinoa, garlic and lime. And a Grass Fed Short Rib Sandwich, $14 shredded grass-fed short-rib topped with jicama and green apple slaw.

IN REVIEW… ARIZONA BEER WEEK 2012 A WONDERFUL WEEK INDEED!

For the record, Arizona Beer Week 2012 did not come limping to the finish line like a worn out marathoner. Although, to be sure, many of the folks that called themselves 100 percenters (attending at least one event every day) looked a little rough around the edges, the week finished every bit as strong as it started. It finished with Eccentric Café at The Hungry Monk, and Colorado Firkin night at Flanny’s, and Big Beer Night at Moto, and tap take overs and beer dinners (the Alaskan dinner at Trophy’s earned rave reviews), but most importantly it ended with a sense of community as close to 1,000 people filled the parking lot at Papago to say farewell to the week.

corner of Scottsdale and McDowell, they are easy to miss if you don’t know where to find them. But, they have a reputation that makes them standout in a way that no signage or location could ever hope to. They have been selected multiple times as one of the top beer bars in the world by a variety of publications and they continue to earn those bragging rights. They are the final destination many nights for visiting brewery reps, which explains why the nearby Best Western is consistently packed with beer industry folks, and they know how to throw a party. They don’t put on a major event too often. The last large outdoor event they held was their 5th Anniversary party in May of 2006. But they blew the lid off of their sleepy little strip mall with Brewing Up Hope which effectively put a big stamp on the end of Beer Week.

Papago Brewing is the godfather of Arizona beer bars. Tucked away in a shopping center on the southwest

attended to as people were headed out to O.H.S.O Brewery or someplace else to put a nice breakfast in their bellies that would provide the base needed to finish the day. At Noon when the gates opened, over 30 breweries had beer ready to serve, and not just every day offerings either. Four Peaks was there with Sirius Black, Rye Wine and Bourbon Barrel Oatmeal Stout. J.R. from Odell’s brought a cask of Coconut Milk Stout, Stone had some special offerings as did Firestone Walker. SanTan had four beers from their Brewers Reserve series including a Belgian Black IPA which was one of the hits of the day. Crispin Ciders reprised their Strong Beer Festival appearance with both Wonderwall and Marvin, two experimental unfiltered, barrel aged ciders that amazed festival goers at both events. There was Old Bluehair from Big Sky, Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout from Lost Coast, Hop Manna from He’Brew, Gulden Draak and more. Arlo from Ska surprised us with four beers never sold in Arizona

including a gingerbread brown ale and an orange stout that blew many people away. The breweries sent people to represent as well. Garret Marrero from Maui Brewing was in attendance as was Arlan Arntsen from Stone. Rick Chapman from Coronado was present as was the world famous Tebo from Breckenridge. Shmaltz, Grand Canyon, Great Divide, Green Flash, Crispin, Redstone Meadery, Grand Canyon, Crispin, Left Hand, New Belgium and more all had key people in attendance. Big Sky had their owner and top sales management in town to support this final event. Everywhere you looked there were industry insiders reveling in the beautiful weather and the feeling of hope generated by this festival. Attracting thousands of beer connoisseurs each year from across the Valley and beyond, the 24th annual Great Arizona Beer Festival takes place March 3, 2012 from 2 pm to 6 pm (VIP entry at 1 pm) at Tempe Beach Park. What does it take to put on a festival like this? A lot of hard work on the part of the folks at Papago to be sure, and Leah Huss deserves almost all of the credit for pulling off this event. Not everybody realizes it but to pull off a festival of this nature, it typically requires a charity tie-in to get the right licenses. Leah chose to work with the MISS Foundation. This foundation is a volunteer based organization committed to providing crisis support and long term aid to families after the death of a child from any cause. MISS also participates in legislative and advocacy issues, community engagement and volunteerism, and culturally competent, multidisciplinary, education opportunities. So while we all partied, the true beneficiary was a wonderful charity that provides an amazing service at a difficult time. There was one more reason for the party as well. Back on June 6,

2002 a father and son partnership was formed. It was memorialized by a liquor license for a new beer distributor based out of Mesa Cold Storage named Little Guy Distributing. At the time they had no designs on being a catalyst for the craft beer revolution in Arizona, they just wanted to have some good beer for themselves. Shortly after opening, Bruce and C.B. McConnell added a third partner, Andy Keyser. In 2003, they moved to a larger facility as the business expanded and started hiring sales, warehouse and delivery staff. They rapidly outgrew that facility as well and in 2006 sold the business to Crescent Crown Distributing where it is now known as World Class Beer. So, while closing out Beer Week, and raising money for MISS Foundation, we were also celebrating the 10th Anniversary of an iconic industry member in Arizona. All things considered it was a great beer week, but our livers and our wallets are happy that we can take a couple of deep breaths and recover for a while…at least until the next major craft beer event. Until then…

Going Back To College! by “King” James Swann Hello again Beer Lovers. Today let’s wrap up our month long chat on Local Brews and go back to college, College Street Brewing from Lake Havasu City that is. Many of you may not yet have heard of of College Street, but trust me when I say that you will soon see them everywhere. Many may know their master brewer Lon Weatherson from Barley Bros Brewing also located in Havasu. Lon has won 7, yes 7 GABF Medals for Barley Bros. Impressive eh? Moving on, let’s drop College Street Sweet Devil Stout into the spotlight today and begin with its Colour. This beautiful brew pours black as night and finishes with a nice thick tan head that leaves an impressive amount of lacing on the glass. Made with malts from across the Globe, big notes of Chocolate and Coffee dominate the nose and the pallet as you dive in for that important first sip. As the beer begins to warm, slight earthy flavours of leather and spice begin to emerge and compliment the chocolate very nicely. Alcohol by volume sits at 6.5% and is barely noticeable, which is nice in a stout bordering on the Imperial style guideline. Great Food Pairings include Spicy beef and vegetable dishes or Cinnamon ice cream ginger cookies. The perfect booze pairing is a chilled blend of Baileys and Kahlau touched with a hint of Goldschlager. Anyone Up for a Drink? All this talk of beer and booze is making me thirsty!

MILL AVE.

Beer is the oldest alchoholic beverage and has been around since at least the ancient Sumerians of 2600 B.C., and was probably discovered much earlier. The ancient Sumerians even had a proverb that went “No children without sex - no drunkenness without beer.” Beer has had an important place in human history.

I have been trying to explore Phoenix more so lately! It is such a different scene and a lot of cool places are kind of hidden. I happened to come across a neat place called The Film Bar. They offer foreign, independent, cult, classic, documentary, and repertory films for your entertainment. During their happy hour, which is daily from 5pm-7pm, they offer $1 off beer and $5 off bottles of wine. The beer and wine selection here is definitely impressive. It is a modern atmosphere, with a swanky feel. This is definitely a spot that I will be returning to. 815 N. 2nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85003

They have late night happy hour here Sunday-Thursday. Lucky Strike has $2 domestics, $3 wells, $4 house wines, and half off selected menu items. nother NFL Combine has come and gone. As expected, RG3 and Andrew Luck shined in their workouts. The Draft, however, is the true testament to the results of this often under and overrated day in the NFL. In any event, this season’s potential NFL Draft Picks seem very promising. This could prove for a very interesting 2012-13 Season. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Here are a few of the results. TRAVIS BENJAMIN

Kim’s Corner Little Hurricane is a blues/rock duo comprised of drummer CC (she used to be a chef) and guitarist Tone. The pair sets the stage with vintage furniture (complete with builtin speakers), microphones, instruments and lamps. Their equipment’s expanded in the many months since—CC even started singing alongside Little Hurricane joins Jenny Owen Youngs at spare bursts of mandolin and Club Congress on Friday March 3rd. harmonica—but the San Diego duo’s bruised sound is still rooted in restless rhythms and heated hooks on their self-released debut album, Homewrecker. Little Hurricane will be joining Jenny Owen Youngs at Club Congress (311 E. Congress St. in Tucson) on Friday, March 3rd. Visit www.hotelcongress.com/club for more information and tickets. Killswitch Engage are pleased to announce that they have filled the singer vacancy in the band and they have done so with a familiar face: original vocalist Jesse Leach. Leach sang on the band’s first self-titled album, which came out in 2000, and on their landmark 2002 Roadrunner debut Killswitch engage welcome back original singer, Jesse Leach. Alive or Just Breathing. Leach left the band in 2002 and was replaced by Howard Jones, but his work on Alive or Just Breathing has always been revered by diehard, longtime KsE fans. A decade later, things have come full circle.

el Pedregal continues its new Spring Festival featuring lively music, distinctive shopping, and refreshing wines on Sunday, March 4th from 1-4pm. Guests will enjoy a live concert by Urban Quartet. Noted as “not your ordinary string quartet,” the band brings to the stage an eclectic repertoire performing original and contemporary works including Metallica, Sting, U2, The Cranberries, Eminem, Coldplay, Fergie, Gwen Stefani, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and more! Their music features a wide range of sounds including hard rock, alternative rock, pop, club music, cutting edge electronic music, jazz and original film music. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

All the hip Phoenicians have come to love Filmbar for various reasons. Perhaps it’s the cult and indie movies they like to showcase for us, along with the fact that we get to drink affordable adult beverages as we enjoy a movie. They also have their international beats parties on Saturdays known as The Palace when the DJs spin world house music, causing the dance floor to become saturated with vibrating hipsters sipping on local brews and PBR. Filmbar attracts such a cultured crowd that they have become one of the five venues holding this year’s Fringe Festival events. The Phoenix Fringe Festival consists of a series of performing art works brought to you by individuals who don’t give an eff about offending their audiences. The performers this weekend are storytellers. Similar to the storytelling of ancient Greek bards like, Homer-but definitely not as graceful or poetic, expect these contemporary storytellers to be crude, obscene, and more than likely humorous. Tales of travel, sex, and love are the themes of this week’s three performances. This weekend and next Laura Rutherford will stage 1001 Hot Arabian Nights: The Pillowtalk and Wondertales that Saved Scheherazade. Sule Greg Wilson will put on Tales of Consensual Shenanigans: Erotic Folk Tales from Hither and Yon...and Some Dirty Blues, too! And Pina will perform the The Pina & Pinna Show. Such unique titles must mean something sexy if not just goofy is going to go down. Then afterwards or even in between, you’ll be able to release more than just laughs on Filmbar’s dance floor. As mentioned earlier, Filmbar is just one of five venues hosting the Phoenix Fringe Festival, so be sure to check out their website for more specific information. Fridays and Saturdays this week and next (3/2-3/10). Shows starting at 7 pm. 815 N. 2nd Street, Phoenix. http:// phxfringe.org/. $10. Ages 21+

The Sea Merchants at Rula Bula I love March this year. Late February weather promised us perfect temperatures and St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday which means we all can be relieved of the lies that come the following day—the day we all call in sick to work and have to tell our bosses that we must have gotten food poisoning from carne asada fries. Save that one for the day after the 4th of July. Rula Bula on Mill will for sure be a hot spot this St. Patty’s Day so you may want to check it out on a day that isn’t swarmed with silly oversized leprechauns and sloppy drunkies. Although Rula Bula means “uproar and commotion” in Irish Gaelic, it really is a great bar to have a decent conversation at with your buddies. And of course, a real Irish pub has to have an Irish band playing. This Saturday, the Sea Merchants will fill the bar with Irish rock and Celtic tunes to help create a more authentic mood so those Car Bombs slide down smoothly. After the Great Arizona Beer Festival at Tempe Beach Park Saturday, walk over to Rula Bula where you’ll be able to sip on a Guinness, reflect on the day, or practice expanding your beer intake for the holiday. Saturday, March 3rd. 10 pm – 2 am. Free. Ages 21+

WAKEBOARD WILD! Tips for Beginners…. Perhaps you’ve been skateboarding or snowboarding for some time and want to try something a bit different, or perhaps you’ve never set foot on anything that resembles a board, but wanted to get a taste of something new. Regardless of your motivation, wakeboarding can be an incredibly thrilling time—full of jumps, spins, and of course speed. As a beginner, though, you must understand that all of this takes time, and a whole lot of patience to master. For those that have experience with other sports, you may have an advantage, but either way, you’ll need plenty of time

to perfect this fantastic water sport. Here are some tips for beginners. Find the Right Lifejacket Though right now the thrill of the wake is getting you hyped, safety is and should always be your number one concern. Make sure to find a quality lifejacket, one that fits you properly. Even if you are an incredibly good swimmer, you’ll likely be spending a whole lot of time in the water. Because you’ll be getting up (and falling down) on the board often, you’re going to get worn out quickly trying to tread water—particularly with a board still attached to your feet. A vest-style lifejacket tends to work best, but if it doesn’t fit correctly

and sits too loose, you’ll be entirely uncomfortable. Be safe and be sure to find one that’s good for your body type. Find the Right Board Like the lifejacket, finding the right wakeboard will ease you into the process and keep the “up again down again” process a bit easier. Though it may seem wise to go out and buy the hottest, newest, most expensive board out there—it probably won’t be the best decision for a beginner. Start with a larger board. They tend to be much more stable than those smaller, which will not only better prevent you from falling in the first place, but make it easier for you to get back up and stabilize once you’re ready to go again. Rope Length There are mixed views on the best length of rope for beginners— on one hand, a longer rope will cause less of a wake, making your ride more stable. At the same time, some prefer a shorter rope when starting

March 1st, 2012 - March 7th, 2012

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

out because it makes it easier to pull you out of the water. The best thing you can do is find out which of these works better for you. Try it both ways, and if you find you prefer one, stick with it—as they both have pros and cons. Start Slow I know, you’re thinking, “I didn’t decide on this extreme water sport so I could go slow!” Of course, you don’t want to go too slow, or you’re not going to get anywhere, but understand that becoming a quality wake-boarder doesn’t happen overnight. Asking the driver to jet off at a million miles per hour will only leave you in the water. Trying to do too much too soon will increase the risk of injury, and then your wakeboarding career will be over. So start slow, and remember that only with constant practice and babysteps will you improve and flourish.
