The Tucson Guitar Society is delighted to bring back one of our favorite guitarists, Rene Izquierdo, this time in duo with soprano Maria Jette. Renowned as a superb solo guitarist, Rene also has a passion for ensemble work. He comes to Tucson fresh from his Carnegie Hall performance with recorder virtuoso Clea Galhano to work his magic with the delightful soprano Maria Jette. The program is a perfect prelude to Valentine’s Day, exploring songs of love by Spanish, French and Latin American composers. And there will be a few special treats of solo guitar just because we could imagine having Rene here and not hearing him play solo! CITY! COVER STORY

THE TUCSON GEM AND MINERAL SOCIETY & THE TUCSON GEM AND MINERAL SHOW ™ Tucson Convention Center February 13-16 2014 During the first two weeks of February, the City of Tucson turns into the best place to buy and sell gems, minerals, fossils and unique items of all kinds. However, the second full weekend of February is the best for those who enjoy gems and minerals. You know what happens, but do you know how this started? In December of 1946, a small group of people who enjoyed collecting rocks and minerals officially formed The Tucson Gem and Mineral Society with the express purpose, “To encourage the interest and study of geology and mineralogy.” The Society provides educational support to all level of schools fosters education of earth sciences and provides scholarship assistance to college students. The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show™ is the vehicle to achieve these goals. The Tucson Gem and Mineral Society is a local non-profit entity that is primarily comprised of members residing in Pima County, all of whom have the singular focus of earth sciences. The small group of intrepid gem and mineral enthusiasts continued to share their interest with others - and in 1955, with the encouragement of a few mineral dealers, held the first ever Tucson Gem and Mineral ShowTM. This first show was on March 19th and 20th at the Helen Keeling Elementary School. The show concentrated on minerals and, over the years, the show evolved to include gems and jewelry as well as other high quality items. The Board of Directors decided that with one successful show there should be a second annual show. The following year the show was held at the Pima County Fair Grounds and continued to be held there until 1972. But by 1961 the landscape for mineral shows was starting to change. In 1961, the first satellite show was held at the Holiday Inn South. By the late 1960’s a few more satellite shows were held around the city. From the early 1970’s through the 1990’s more shows were added. Today there are more the 45 privately sponsored shows

January 29th, 2014 - February 4th, 2014

around the city and this conglomeration of all shows is known as the Tucson Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Showcase. However, none of the other shows should be confused with the one and only Tucson Gem and Mineral ShowTM which will be held February 13-16, 2014 at the Tucson Convention Center. The Tucson Gem and Mineral Society continued to hold its show each year. With a theme of “Fiesta of Gems and Minerals” in 1972, the Society moved its show to the new Tucson

Community Center which became the Tucson Convention Center. Each year the show has a theme to highlight a specific mineral or mineral location. Some of the popular themes have included, gold, silver, copper and most recently “Minerals of Arizona” to celebrate the centennial of Arizona statehood. Paul Desautels was for many years the Curator of Gems and Minerals at the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institution. He believed in the mission of TGMS and brought the first Smithsonian exhibit to Tucson in 1961. Since that first museum exhibit, and in order to continue with its mission of education, each year the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society brings in exhibits from private and museum collections around the US and the world. Here, in one place, you can see the best examples of minerals ever mined. You

can see cut gemstones and finished jewelry, like the Cullinan Blue Diamond Necklace from the National Museum of Natural History that was on loan for the 2011 show. The museum partners bring treasures that it would take anyone years to see, if you were lucky. For some collectors the lure of competition is an elixir. Each year competition is fierce for “the best rocks in the show” and the award given in

memory of Paul Desautels. But there is competition for every level collector who wants to take this particular plunge, junior, to novice to advanced. There is competition for those with large collections to those who want to compete with one specimen. Many of the young exhibitors have gone on to study geology or mineralogy. Tucson resident Gene Schlepp won a blue ribbon at the first show and will be an active participant at this year’s 60th anniversary show. For the adults who want to further their knowledge of mineralogy or for those who are just interested, there are talks throughout the weekend on various topics. These talks range from how to photograph that great mineral specimen, to where to find the best wulfenite in Arizona or the minerals

of Mars and the Rover program in which the University of Arizona is so significantly involved. The show has something for the young or maybe just young at heart. Junior Education is a cooperative effort between the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society and students from the University of Arizona who are majoring in any of the earth sciences. Jr. Ed., as it is affectionately called, is a fun, interactive experience. The students set up experiments to show how volcanoes erupt, what happens during an earthquake, or how comets form in space. All of these experiments are for the younger set and explained in simple terms that make it easy for youngsters to understand. Before leaving the area, each child is encouraged to begin their own mineral collection by selecting up to 12 mineral samples. Finally, the group without whose support the show would have achieved the success it has: the dealers. 250 dealers from around the world are invited to participate. There is a waiting list to participate. The dealers display and offer for sale the finest minerals, the most beautiful gemstones and stunning jewelry. Each year the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show™ offers one of the best opportunities to add an item to your collection, or better yet start a collection with the intention of returning next year to add to your collection. Please do not be scared off when you see a mineral specimen with a price tag of $100,000. Admire its beauty and rarity. But remember, there are many beautiful and collectible LPHQ (low price, high quality) specimens available for under $25.00. This, and so much more, is the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show™, hosted by the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society. The Tucson Gem and Mineral ShowTM was the first gem and mineral show in the City of Tucson and continues as the best mineral show to attend. With something for everyone, minerals for every budget, cut gemstones to finished jewelry in every price range, worldwide exhibits, talks on topics of interest and Junior Education, it is the place to be February 13-16, 2014. Please mark your calendars and we will see you soon.

Daphnis and Chloé is a premiere for Ballet Tucson and will be reinterpreted by Mark Schneider, who has created many popular works for Ballet Tucson, including the Fall Program’s Dracula. It has been quite a warm winter here in the southwest, and we hikers and bikers are loving every moment of the sun and cool winter breezes. Here’s a trek to do if you find yourself down south in Arizona, it is one of my favorite places to go for different scenery. Murray springs interpretive Clovis site is one of the most important archeological sites in the entire Southwest and it has the most extensive collection of Paleo-Indian artifacts. It is not necessarily a hiker’s hike, however it’s a wonderful trail for its rich history, interest and scenery. This short, 1/3 mile walk is great for all levels of physical ability and ages, it has ten distinct points of interest along the way. There are plenty of places to sit and shaded areas as well. Additionally, there are many trails that you can take off on if you find yourself seeking some hiking adventure. There is also another trail heading east from

‘Labor Day’

‘Love is in the Air’

Kate Winslet plays a depressed single mom who offers a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search the town for the escaped convict, she gradually learns his true story and her options become increasingly limited. (PG-13 - 111 minutes)

Nicolas Bedos plays a lawyer living in New York who, on his way back to France for the final round of a job interview, finds himself sitting right next to his ex-girlfriend (Ludivine Sagnier). With a 7-hour flight ahead of them, they are going to have to speak to each other. (NR - 96 minutes)

Randy: A slow moving drama that is solely performance driven. While Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin try their hardest, their characters are just not relatable, nor is the romance believable based on Winslet’s early behavior in the film. While beautifully shot, the only saving grace is Gattlin Griffith that outperforms his bigname co-stars. Joseph: “Labor Day” hits on emotions that most viewers will likely never see coming. In fact, the entire ordeal is actually remarkably romantic - albeit in an extremely strange sort of way. The family that is forged by the finale of this fantastic feature film is more real than most and arrives with a moving message about how the universe finds a way to ensure that we never truly have to walk through life alone.

Stan: Reminded of the characters and their relationship spanning over 15 years presented by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the three ‘before’ films, ‘Before Sunrise (1995), ‘Before Sunset’ (2004), and ‘Before Midnight (2013), this light and airy French language retrospective view of an ex-couple’s relationship during the course of an intercontinental flight does give an interesting perspective on expectations and relationships.

On the set of 1982’s ‘The Thing’, the whole cast and crew was male.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Randy: Play by play romantic comedy. So predictable and by the book, you’d swear Hollywood produced it. This French romance is silly, yet surprisingly likable. Ludivine Sagnier and Nicholas Bedos are not only the highlight, they make the movie. This is a hard one not to like, but easy to forget once over. Perfect for a date night, or to brush up on your French.

“Tower Heist” (2011): Stiller downplays his humor well as the ringleader of a plot by Ponzi scheme victims to recover their funds.

“Tropic Thunder” (2008): Also the director and co-writer, Stiller is hilarious in this movie industry satire as a the star of a war story who’s taken captive in an actual conflict during filming.

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less. ‘Devil’s Due’ ~ Not nearly as bad as it could have been. A few creepy moments, garnering a few chills, but enough with the found footage already. Grade: C

“Meet the Fockers” (2004): It’s also no mean feat not to get lost among Robert De Niro, Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman, but Stiller manages it in this comedy sequel.

Marcela Valladolid leaves ‘The Kitchen’ to go tailgating Q: If calories are no object, what’s your optimal menu for a Super Bowl party? A: It’s all about the wings! I make these amazing chicken wings with an ancho chile glaze and top it with pecans; they are absolutely amazing. Serve them with roasted chipotle baby red potatoes and your favorite tequila cocktail, and everyone will love you. Q: How about if calories are a concern, but people Marcela Valladolid still want something that tastes good? A: The taco light is an absolute favorite at my family parties. Marinate a nice piece of skirt steak, put it on the grill, and instead of using a tortilla for the taco, use a fresh piece of butter lettuce. Top with a little avocado and your favorite salsa, and I promise you won’t feel guilty about eating tacos at all.
