ARIZONA AND BOSTON COLLEGE SET TO SQUARE OFF AT THE 2013 ADVOCARE V100 INDEPENDENCE BOWL
Throughout its 38-year history, the Independence Bowl has seen some of football’s greatest players compete at Independence Stadium. From Art Monk to Brett Favre, Bruce Smith to Eli Manning, and many other greats of the game, Shreveport-Bossier has had the privilege of hosting quite the talented array of players. That won’t change this year, as the 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl welcomes in the Arizona Wildcats and the Boston College Eagles. Both teams are led by two top-tier running backs, Ka’Deem Carey of Arizona and Andre Williams of Boston College. The two have combined for nearly 4,000 yards on the ground and 34 touchdowns. This year’s battle of the running backs should be cause for some great entertainment. The Arizona Wildcats (7-5, 4-5) of the Pac-12 are an at-large representative in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. This is Arizona’s first trip to the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl. The Wildcats become just the third Pac-12 team to play in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl’s 38year history, joining Washington (1987) and Oregon (1989, 1992). Arizona is led by junior running back Ka’Deem Carey, the 2013 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. He is the first Arizona player to win that award.

He is fifth in the country in rushing yards at 1,716, and second nationally in rush yards per game at 156. He has gotten into the end zone on the ground 17 times. He is also fourth on the team in receiving with 26 catches for 173 yards and another score. Carey, Arizona’s all-time leading rusher, was named a Walter Camp first-team AllAmerican at running back, and was also a Doak Walker Award finalist. Arizona’s dual-threat quarterback, senior B.J. Denker, has thrown for 2,241 yards and 14 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also has 898 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. His top target is freshman receiver Nate Phillips, who leads the team with 503 yards on 42 receptions and a teamhigh seven touchdowns. Arizona’s biggest victory of the year was a 42-16 home blowout against No. 5 Oregon. Coach Rich Rodriguez, in his second season with the Wildcats, has lead the team to a bowl game in each
of his first two years. It is the fifth time in the last six years the Wildcats have made a bowl game. Boston College, (7-5, 4-4) is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s representative in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl. This will be the Eagles first trip to play in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl. The Eagles are led by senior running back Andre Williams, who leads the nation in rushing yards with 2,102. He is just the 16th player in college football history to post a 2,000-yard season, joining some of college football’s most revered names, such as Barry Sanders, Marcus Allen, LaDainian Tomlinson and Ricky Williams. Williams leads the nation at 175.2 yards per game, and the unanimous All-ACC first-team selection scored 17
touchdowns for the Eagles. Williams was named the winner of the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back. Williams becomes just the third Doak Walker Award winner to play in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/ Independence Bowl, and he is the first to play in the game the same year he won the award. He also joins Carey as a Walter Camp first-team All-American at running back. The Eagles are known for producing top talent at linebacker, and are led defensively by senior linebackers Kevin Pierre-Louis and Steele Divitto. Divitto, a third-team All-ACC selection, leads BC in tackles with 107, including five for loss and two sacks. He also has an interception and five passes broken up. Pierre-Louis, a first-team All-ACC selection, is second on the team with 104 tackles, including 10.5 for loss and six sacks. Third-team All-ACC defensive end Kasim Edabali leads the team in tackles for loss (15) and sacks (9.5). First year head coach Steve Addazio has the Eagles in their first bowl game since the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl after going 2-10 in 2012. This will be the first meeting between Arizona and Boston College. It is also the second-consecutive year that both participants are making their first appearance in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl/Independence Bowl.

START THE NEW YEAR WITH FIRST DAY HIKES AT AZ STATE PARKS ON JANUARY 1 Each year, America’s State Parks announces a national collaboration of all 50 State Park systems across America to sponsor guided “First Day Hikes” on New Year’s Day. Arizona State Parks will charge day-use entrance fees only for the First Day Hikes at 13 different parks on January 1, 2014. According to State Parks Director Bryan Martyn, “We are committed to promoting outdoor recreation as a way to get families outside and unplugged from their video games and other electronic media. This is a great opportunity to take the family on an easy hike.” Arizona’s “First Day Hikes” offer individuals and families an opportunity to begin the New Year re-energizing and
connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy walk at one of these 13 State Parks. “These exhilarating hikes will get families in the swing of exercise and outdoor trekking for the upcoming year,” said Martyn. Details about hike locations, difficulty and length, terrain and tips regarding proper clothing are listed on the Arizona State Parks website at AZStateParks. com or by calling (602) 542-4174. You can also keep up with new information about activities in Arizona State Parks through Facebook and Twitter at AZStateParks. As a part of this program, the Arizona State Parks listed below will offer guided hikes on January 1, 2014 so get out those boots and go hike! ALL HIKES: Wear warm clothes in layers, bring one liter of water, hat, sunscreen, good walking shoes, walking stick, binoculars and a camera for your hike! There are always good photo
opportunities on these hikes. Also be sure to check with the park for details about the hike before you leave to be sure there are no changes to the hike for that day due to the weather. Some hikes require reservations and some don’t allow dogs. Children under six years old may need to be carried throughout the hike so plan to hike with backpacks.
Arizona State Parks in Northern Arizona: · Dead Horse Ranch SP (Cottonwood): 10 am. Meet at west lagoon parking lot. The hike will last about 2 hours and cover about 3 miles. Hikers will meander along the Verde River riparian area as well as the three lagoons on the park. · Red Rock SP (Sedona): 9 am, 10 am, and 2 pm - Meet at Visitor Center. No dogs allowed. Enjoy a 1.5- hour interpretive naturalist-led hike about birds, nature or geology of the area. · Tonto Natural Bridge SP (Payson): 10 am and 1 pm - The hike will proceed to the Gowan Trail to the observation desk under the natural bridge. It will last about 2 hours even though it is only ½ mile. The trail is steep and requires steps. No pets or strollers on the hikes. Afterward a guided tour of the historic lodge will be offered. Arizona State Parks in Southern Arizona: · Catalina SP (Tucson): 8 am and 10 am For the 8 am hike, meet at main trailhead for the long 7-mile loop hike or take the one mile Romero Ruins Adventure Walk at 10 am. · Kartchner Caverns SP (Benson): 9 am - Meet at the Discovery Center to take the 2-hour long 2.5-mile Foothills Loop Trail. Hike will include discussion of plant life, geology, and hydrology. · Patagonia Lake SP (Patagonia): 9 am - Meet at Visitor Center to take the 2.5-mile Overlook Hike with a great view of the lake or the 3-mile Petroglyph Site Hike across the lake with some rock scrambling included!! Mariah Mesa Trail.
Arizona State Parks in Western Arizona: · Alamo Lake SP (Wenden): 9 am - Meet at Ranger Station/Store. Moderate hike for ages 10 and up and plan to hike about a mile. The hike will showcase plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert. · Buckskin Mountain SP (Parker): 10 am - Meet at the contact station for a 1.5mile hike of moderate difficulty. · Cattail Cove SP (Lake Havasu City): 9 am - Hike along Whyte’s Retreat Trail. There are stairs on the 2-mile hike. Learn natural history and the history of Lake Havasu and the Parker Dam. · Lake Havasu SP (Lake Havasu City): 10 am - Hike starts from the trailhead in lot #2 and through the Cactus Garden with scenic views along the lake.
Arizona State Parks in Central Arizona: · Lost Dutchman SP (Apache Junction): 9 am - Join us for a ranger-led hike starting at the Siphon Draw Trailhead to the Jacobs Crosscut intersection and finally to the Treasure Loop Trail. Some hikers wanting a more challenging hike will be able to take the Jacob Crosscut Trail with hiking leaders. Learn about desert flora and fauna and the history of Superstition Mountains and the Lost Dutchman Mine. This is a moderate hike with an elevation gain of 500 feet, is a 2.5 mile round trip, and will take about 2 hours. In case of rain, this hike will be cancelled. Sabino Canyon Hiking
I usually like to focus on one or two trails for my column, but this time I want to focus on an entire area; Sabino Canyon in the Catalina foothills. There is something out here for everyone to enjoy, and this is the right time of year to do it! Winter and spring are
my favorite seasons for these treks because right now the sun is warm and the air is crisp. There are several trails to hike, an awesome road to bike, and a tram that will take you on a wonderful and informative 45 min, 3.8 mile tour all year long. There is a streaming river, a dam and the one and only seven falls. Once the mountains get snow and it melts a few times there’s water again! It is too cold right now to swim but it makes for a beautiful and serene getaway from the city, especially during the holiday season with all the hustle and bustle of the shopping and parties. You can hike from the bottom visitor center to anywhere you would like and any mileage, or if you want to get on the tram they will take you to your stop for a particular hike that you
may have in mind. It is nice to use the tram to hike Seven Falls or Hutches Pool because you cut out a long part of the hike that is pretty much just on or beside a road. Sabino Canyon has a rich history, gorgeous canyon and city views and abundant wildlife to witness. I like to come out here to picnic (there are many tables scattered throughout lower Sabino) or to just enjoy the serene desert sunset. All levels of hikers are welcome and will be sure to enjoy, but leave the pooches at home for this one. If you are going to come

Actor Anson Mount (‘All the Boys Love Mandy Lane’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane,” which is now available on Blu-ray and DVD, Amber Heard plays a young woman who is invited by a group of high schoolers to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to drop quite mysteriously. “[My character] is a veteran of the Iraq war. He is probably mildly shell-shocked, prefers solitude and has found the perfect job overseeing this ranch that rarely anybody comes to. And suddenly he has got to deal with these kids who he knows are out to get in trouble. I was sort of the odd man out - the old man - in the movie. “I knew that it was an interesting script and that it kind of turned the modern horror movie on its ear, but I didn’t expect it to be so extremely well shot and I was really pleased with it. Unfortunately, sometimes movies get caught up in legalities that I don’t understand. That is what happened to this one for a while. “You sort of, in his business, learn to live in the present, let things go as soon as you are done and move on to the next thing. I have fond memories from the
[‘All the Boys Love Mandy Lane’] set, though, and it feels great that audiences finally have a chance to see the movie. It really does. “What I like about the movie is that, especially after coming out of an era where horror movies all became kind of ironic because of Wes Craven’s ‘Scream’ series, it is smart enough to recognize that what scares us now is different than what scared us in the 70s, 80s and 90s. What scared us then was the masked figure that was either going to come and kill us or kidnap us. What scares us now is the disgruntled teen.” - Anson Mount
