The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE So…the holidays are upon us, and then they’ll be over, and we’ll have nothing to worry about, right? Well, not really as there’s that New Year’s Eve thing that always seems to be oh so popular. In my experience New Years Eve is one of the hardest party decisions of the year and can cause much strife amongst friends and lovers. The problem is there are so many options, so much going on that different people always want to do different things. So what am I doing? That is a Night Owl secret, but I can tell you some options for you and all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley. Switch: After living in Phoenix for nearly five years and being THE Night Owl I love that I’m still discovering new and exciting places, like Switch Restaurant and Wine Bar in Phoenix. The light rail-accessible bistro offers the new Central Avenue corridor’s specialty, contemporary atmospheres with an urban flair. Think community tables, comfortable couches and exotic menu offerings and you have the most recent brainchild of Scottsdale’s Ibiza Café and Wine Bar creators. Switch’s spacious and comfortable outside patio is perfect for happy hours, while inside the blue hues and well-groomed staff set the tone for a casual and sophisticated night out. Moderately priced, Switch offers an international wine list, fun cocktails and seasonal menu items that if are not authentic are still tasty, like sangrias and Italian sodas. Although I was a littlie disappointed with the rum and vodka based caipirinha, which was a little too lime-aide flavored, the Sesame Citrus Shrimp felt more authentic by juxtaposing chili oil and citrus. If you’re looking to take a bite out of urban Phoenix, check out Switch Restaurant and Wine Bar, www.switchofarizona.com or follow them on Twitter, @switchwinebar. Prosperity Black-Eyed Peas at TEXAZ Grill: Growing up I couldn’t stand that every year my family spent New Year’s Eve quietly. While all of my friend’s families threw huge house parties or got all dressed up and went out, my family was required to attend a Midnight church service and eat dinner at home. As a Texas native, my mom would make the traditional “soul food” New Year’s Eve meal. Greens to welcome in money, black-eyed peas for good luck, cornbread, ox tails, and – yes – chitlins. Now that I’m older and live out of state, I don’t usually spend New Year’s with the family and haven’t had a traditional

“soul food” New Year’s Eve meal in years, but after a rough 2009 I’m going to start this decade off right and eat for good luck. Fortunately, I will not have to do the cooking; instead I’ll be getting my New Year’s Eve meal and “prosperity” black-eyed peas at TEXAZ Grill. Stop in for a meal New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31 and New Year’s Day Friday January, 1 2010 at TEXAZ Grill and receive a complimentary side of “prosperity” black eyed peas. I’ll be stopping by because I’ll need all the luck I can get in 2010. For more info on how you can get your own side of “prosperity” visit, www.texazgrill. com. New Year’s Dinner for Two: Tired of the party thing and want to spend New Year’s Eve at one of the most picturesque restaurants in Phoenix? You’re in luck because Sanctuary on Camelback is offering a special New Year’s Eve dinner. Diners can revel in a fourcourse menu that features items like porcini mushroom and foie gras bisque with black truffle meringue, butter braised Maine lobster with saffron risotto, chantrelle mushrooms and wilted pea tendrils, and Ceder River Beef Wellington with farms foie gras, mushroom duxelle, globe carrots and béarnaise sauce. Food like that isn’t coming cheap, but is well worth it at $125 per person for the early seating and $150 for the late seating. You can have wine pairings for $40. And if you and a date go out to a dinner like that you’ll probably ring in the new year, um, PRETTY, PRETTY spectacularly. For more information visit sanctuaryoncamelback.com. A Hot Hotel New Years: The Mondrian is surely going to be one of the see and be seen New Year’s Eve parties of the year. From a luxury car-lined drive to sexy and scantily clad hostesses greeting you at the door to popular Djs and live performers inside, the Mondrian will be one hot spot. The tickets are fairly priced at $45 which will get you full access to both party venues, drink specials, access to a the desert bar, and a complimentary glass of champagne for the midnight toast. The great thing about hotels is you can just grab a room and don’t have to worry about driving, and the Mondrian is offering New Year’s Eve packages with rooms. For more information and tickets visit newyearseve. morganhotelgroup.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

LIVE! SECTION STING – IF ON A WINTER’S NIGHT… (CHERRY TREE/UMG) The term ‘Christmas album’ has an all too familiar stereotype: Feeling jolly, majestic orchestration and singing traditional tunes that have been done over and over for decades. If it wasn’t for Sting himself saying that this is a Christmas album, one might not pick up on it right away. It doesn’t sound or feel like a traditional Christmas album in any way, yet you can picture how well this would give ambiance to a snow-filled setting. Well, if you live in Flagstaff anyway. In what is certainly a slightly somber, creative yet unexpected throwback consisting of compositions from the last five centuries, this is a creative collection of songs played with rather untraditional or less contemporary instrumentation. “Soul Cake” has a

passage of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” while staying true to the original message of what was sung at Halloween by children going door to door. “There Is No Rose Of Such Virtue” and “The Snow It Melts The Soonest” give a different meaning and feel of Christmas. “The Burning Babe” is the only upbeat track on the album that is also the only song to have drums instead of occasional percussion. Very stripped down and pure not unlike Rick Rubin’s recent works with Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond (i.e more of an organic feel) with a direct showcase on the voice, this album is unlike any in terms of its holiday approach. Although unexpected, it is quite brilliant in its simplicity. – Stephen Wilkinson Rockzone Records, 2155 E. The most successful female recording artist in history is on her way to the Valley. For Mariah Carey’s legions of North American fans, the long wait is over, as the international superstar announces her first major tour in more than three years in support of her #1 R&B album, MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL. The “Angels Advocate” Tour stops at Dodge Theatre in Phoenix Saturday, February 20, 2010 for an 8:00pm performance.

The 8-week, 19-city “Angels Advocate” Tour is Mariah’s first major tour since the “Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour” of August through October 2006. The opening act of the Tour will be RydazNrtist, a new R&B group signed to Nick Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles’ all-time high of 20 #1 Hits. The success of E=MC2 brought total sales of Mariah’s albums, singles and videos to more than 175 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history. Tickets go on sale Saturday, December 19th at 10am. Visit www.livenation.com.
