Nick@ Night What an entertaining and fantastic year we’ve had in the Valley of the Sun. I can’t remember when there were so many great shows to choose from and so little time to see them all. Kudos again to all the fabulous shows! But the most important and pressing issue around the arts is not the quality, but the need for the community to step up and fill the seats for all the arts organizations who are seeing challenging times. This is a time to remember all the inspirational and outstanding performances that so many directors, actors, and actresses have provided over the years that truly remind us live theatre and the arts are the best entertainment in the world! So when you read through the pages of AzWeekly in the coming weeks and months go that extra mile and treat yourself or a friend to a wonderful performance or show you’ve been considering. It may be the best proactive way to say the arts will never perish in Arizona! The calendar is turning again and 2010 is here. It looks like another banner year for exciting and entertaining shows. January promises to be loaded with a broad variety of choices and content. Here’s just a few to start making plans for in 2010: • Arizona Theatre Company opens the Fats Waller Musical Show AINT MISBEHAVIN at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix Dec.30-January 17th. • Mesa Arts Center opens the NAT KING COLE STORY January 19 –January 31 at Mesa Arts Center in Mesa. • IZTHAK PERLMAN appears at Mesa Arts Center also on January 20. • Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts unveils Seinfeld’s JASON ALEXANDER as DONNY CLAY at the Celebrity Theatre January 9th in Phoenix. • THE BEST OF MOMIX follows at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts on January 21-22. • Arizona Broadway Theatre opens the musical GYPSY! January 8-Febuary 21 at the ABT Theatre Center in Peoria. • Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre opens the musical THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN January 7-Febuary 20 at the Broadway Palm in Mesa • PATSEY’S BRIDAL SHOWER comedy also opens at the Broadway Palm Marquee room January 15-May 9. • And Valley Youth Theatre presents the Arizona Première of 13 THE MUSICAL at The Herberger Theatre Center January 29-Febuary 13. Finally, after going through holiday dinners and gatherings, parties and surprises, I found myself unpacking lights and gathering cards to send to friends and relatives around the country. One particular box in a dusty corner opened with a surprise of an age old story of wisdom and virtue from years gone by. It made me think as we say goodbye to 2009-Maybe it’s not too late to say thank you again, or maybe be patient and kind to a stranger who needs some comfort or condolence- or just slow down and go for a simple walk in the desert to rejuvenate the soul. Maybe it’s not too late to remember who we really are and what a difference we can all make. Maybe just maybe, we can make next year the best year ever for the east valley! Here is a part of the poem that I discovered in the old box: DESIDERATA-(author unknown) Go Placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love. For in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. Be careful. Strive to be happy. GOOD LUCK IN 2010! BREAK A LEG!

“The Lovely Bones”, director Peter Jackson’s smaller yet powerful movie! Actress Saoirse Ronan who stars as the 14 year old is on my list of best actresses. Director Peter Jackson, who has become synonymous with his big budget large-scale presentations of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “King Kong”, demonstrates his expertise as a filmmaker and storyteller with “The Lovely Bones”. It’s a smaller scaled thriller centering on a murdered 14-year-old girl, who’s watching over her family, and, her killer, from heaven. Her dilemma is weighing her desire for vengeance against her wishes for her family to heal and for closure. Be sure to read my full review at www.ScreenScene.org Starring Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Saoirse Ronan, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci. Directed by Peter Jackson; written by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens; Paramount Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving disturbing violent content and images, and some language. Runtime: 135 minutes.

“Nine”, director Rob Marshall’s next musical after Oscar® winner “Chicago”! “Nine” is on my top films and best director lists. Director Rob Marshall won an Oscar® for the musical “Chicago” (2002), and in this musical drama, he gives us a look using the musical format, at the world of famous director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), who reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportions while balancing the numerous women in his life, including his wife, his mistress, and his actress/muse as he works on his current movie project! My full review is available at www. ScreenScene.org Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, and Stacy Ferguson.

“Sherlock Holmes”, actor Robert Downey Jr. shines as Holmes!

Directed by Rob Marshall; written by Michael Tolkin and Anthony Minghella; The Weinstein Company release. Rated PG-13 for sexual content and smoking.

Actor Robert Downey Jr. is on my best actors list for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes! Sherlock Holmes, a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, first appeared in publication in 1887 and is the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The fictional character

In this version, the legendary detective reveals fighting skills as lethal as his intellect when he and Dr. Watson fight to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy England. My full review is available at www. ScreenScene.org Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan, Robert Maillet, Geraldine James, Kelly Reilly, William Houston, Hans Matheson, and James Fox. Directed by Guy Ritchie; written by Michael Robert Johnson and Anthony Peckham; Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material. Runtime: 128 minutes.

“It’s Complicated”, a light look with a heavy message at relationships. With the veteran performances of multiple award winners, the romantic

comedy “Its Complicated”, gives a view of a mother (Meryl Streep) of three grown children who has maintained an amicable relationship with her exhusband (Alec Baldwin) of 10 years. Two items disturbs the tranquility she has established, a dinner with her ex turns into the unimaginable, an affair, and the affections of a new man in her life (Steve Martin) presents a complicated situation! Starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Mary Kay Place, Rita Wilson, and Alexandra Wentworth.

Written and directed by Scott Cooper; Fox Searchlight Pictures release. Rated R for language and brief sexuality. Runtime: 111 minutes.

also holds the distinction of having the most appearances in movies of any other fictional characters!

“Broken Embraces”, obsessions and power are examined. “Broken Embraces” is on my list of best foreign language movies! The story centers on a man who writes, lives, and loves in darkness. Fourteen years ago he was in a severe car crash on the island of Lanzarote. In the accident, he not only lost his sight, he also lost Lena, the love of his life. He’s a writer and uses two names: Harry Caine, the pseudonym which he signs his literary works, stories and scripts, and Mateo Blanco, his real name, which is the life he leads and the name he uses for the film he’s directing. His “two name” lives become intertwined with the lines of reality blurring when unpredictable and hidden events begin to surface. The Chipmunks meet their match with The Chipettes: Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette. Romantic and musical sparks start to fly when the Chipmunks and Chipettes square off! The Night Owl BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE

“LEAVIN ’09 & BRINGIN IN THE DYME” Brent Says Goodbye

Efia Says Goodbye

Life is a just like a party isn’t it? You get ready, prepare yourself and try to make sure you are at your best. You head to the party filled with excitement talking about who and what you hope to see and who and what you don’t, and when you arrive you are embraced (or maybe turned away or disappointed). As the party goes on, you experience the familiar and the new, and you meet new people at every turn. Perhaps you find love and joy, perhaps you find sadness or jealousy or rage, but either way a party, like life, is a joyous celebration where people, ideas and emotions come and go.

Being a Night Owl has been one of the defining experiences of my career and life in Arizona. The two years I’ve spent writing about my adventures and mishaps in the Valley’s entertainment scene has helped me evolve from a California native to an involved Arizona resident. Before Brent asked me to join him as a Night Owl, I was just another young professional looking to break into my career and acclimate to my new hometown. I had no knowledge of the Valley’s distinct communities or its unique restaurants, party scenes, arts, entertainment and very much thriving culture. During my time as a Night Owl I have had countless opportunities to speak with celebrities, attend momentous events, and appreciate what makes Phoenix a notable metropolis. Although I still think of Arizona as the Wild West, I’ve grown fond of the people and businesses that continue to define it.

With that, Efia and I are ending our party with the Night Owl, and moving on to our next party in life to experience new people, emotions, and most of all…life itself. This, in fact, is our last column as Night Owls and first and foremost we want to thank our readers. In my four years writing the Night Owl column and traveling the Valley, I have hoisted cocktails with everyday Joes and Hollywood stars, car mechanics and highpowered lawyers, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers and most importantly new friends and old. During my Night Owl travels and documenting, I’ve been to almost every event, many bars, restaurants and the many other places that stitch a city together. I’ve come to see what exactly this city, this city that sprung up in a heat-doused desert, is made of, and more importantly who it is made of because the people are what gives a city its character. I can tell you, and am happy to know, that Phoenix is made up of friendly people, generous people, damn sexy people and good people. Last (before Efia takes the mike), I want to thank the readers (again), the event planners, the restaurant owners, the club owners, the bands, the athletes, the artists, the bar owners, the PR people, the CEOs, the executives and the entrepreneurs that have made the last four years wonderful. Of course, thank you to the great people at AZWeekly Magazine. As for me, my next party is going to be a life goal that I have always had… writing a novel. I look forward to undertaking this adventure and challenge. Thank you again and keep the Valley moving.

As Brent and I say adieu to the column and (begrudgingly) all of its perks, I can’t help but reflect on all the things I’ll miss about my “official duties” as a Night Owl columnist, like complimentary entry into festivals, club and sporting events, and first tasting. More than the events, I’ll miss meeting all the interesting and odd people that make up the Valley. Being giving the opportunities to meet the people behind the Valley’s entertainment concepts, and gain insight into their lives has been a gift that makes leaving the Night Owl even more bittersweet. I hope that in the two years I’ve spent contributing to this column I’ve encouraged other residents and Valley newcomers to explore, support and embraces the vivacious culture and lifestyle of Phoenix and its surrounding areas. I hope that Night Owls will continue to discover the best of Valley and share it with others. I thank Brent for letting me shine in the Night Owl spotlight with him. He’s been an extraordinary partner, mentor, and friend. I also must thank everyone that contributed to the Night Owl column and all of you that read it week after week, Brent and I couldn’t have had such a successful run without your continued support. Be safe and well fellow Night Owls, and of course party on.

BEER! SECTION

BEER! Be(er) Yourself On a cool, crisp November morning, behind a nondescript strip mall, a foreign scent pervades the air…at least foreign to us. Rounding the corner, we observed boiling caldrons, homemade apparatuses and underneath tents a motley crew assembled. What could a business analyst, a software engineer, an x-ray technician, an installer and a local fireman possibly have in common? The single thread that binds them together is simple….they all love to brew beer! We had arrived at a gathering of ASH (AZ Society of Home Brewers). Sponsored by The Brewers Connection, one of several home brewing supply businesses in the Valley, and staffed with a helpful and friendly group of people, The Brewers Connection provides not only everything one needs to brew beer and ferment wine, but also any advice or tips one may require. As

Jeffrey, the owner explained to us, “everyone has heard of someone who had a bad first experience.” He knows that his business’ success is predicated on the success of his client’s finished products. We observed the goings-on, and after being introduced to one group in particular, realized how friendly, zealous about their craft, and willing to share information these guys are. We were educated about the process of home brewing, the importance of ingredients and the difference between brews such as lagers, ales and bocks. Like a culinary chef, each individual brewer has their own favorite recipes. Indeed, published recipe books with famous beers are available for purchase at Brewers Connection.

If you’re from the Midwest, and you drink beer, you’ve probably heard of Bell’s and most likely enjoyed drinking it. In a bold move, Bell’s beer has reached us from Michigan and landed in the parched region of Arizona. Bell’s is currently enjoying a hugely successful placement into beer-friendly bars all over Phoenix via World Class Beverages. You’ll be seeing a lot more of Bell’s and if you have never heard of them, please give it a try. People who know beer rate Bell’s very high, in fact a 2008 ranking by ratebeer.com placed Bell’s in the #4 ranking of their top 100. Not a bad showing considering there were over 8,000 breweries considered.

On this particular day, one group was brewing 20 gallons of Chimay, a wellknown brew among beer connoisseurs and traditionally brewed by Belgian Trappist Monks. Prior to that, we believed brewing to be a difficult, tedious task with questionable results. What we learned, however, was that, like baking bread, with the proper ingredients, cookware and recipes to follow, brewing is actually fairly simple….and a heck of a lot of fun.

Bell’s Brewery, Inc., is the kind of success story beer brewers tell around the campfire. Founded by Larry Bell as a home-brewing supply shop in 1983, Bell’s sold its first beer in 1985. Originally brewing in a 15-gallon soup kettle, the company has grown remarkably from its production of 135 barrels (1 barrel = 31 gal.) in 1986 to

Brewers Connection is located at 1425 E. University, Ste. 103 in Tempe and can be reached online at www.brewersconnection.com or you can contact ASH at www.azhomebrewers.org.

It was once suggested that the name “Moose Drool” might be found distasteful by some beer drinkers. Naaaaaaahhh! We love our Moose Drool Brown Ale as well as a bevy of other “Critter Beers” originating from the open minds and wide open spaces at Big Sky Brewing in Montana. No wonder we like it – Aside from it’s renegade name, it’s got caramel and chocolate in it. Now, the number one beer brewed in Montana, the drool is spreading all over the country and yes…Thirsty Arizonan’s are slurping the drool too. Pick up a sixer at the Daily Dose in Old Town Scottsdale or Pranksters Too at Hayden and Thomas.

over 90,000 barrels in 2007. Total brewing capacity now stands at 140,000 barrels and the brewery currently sells its beer across a fifteenstate area, through a network of over fifty quality wholesalers. Over twenty years of brewing, Bell’s Brewery (the oldest craft brewer east of Boulder), has built a nationwide reputation as a creative and talented brewery, playing a significant role in changing the beerscape of the nation.

debacle. Iowa State dropped its final 10 games and was outscored by an average of 19.8 points in eight Big 12 losses. Things appeared to get even worse when Coach Gene Chizik left for Auburn just weeks after the season ended. The Golden Gophers (6-6) are making their third Insight Bowl appearance in four years. They lost to Kansas 42-21 last season and dropped a 44-41 overtime game to Texas Tech in 2006.

Mountain West champion TCU (12-0) earned an automatic bid to become a BCS buster for the first time in school history. Western Athletic Conference champ Boise State (13-0) became the first team from a non-automatic qualifying conference to receive an at-large bid.

FIESTA FEVER Texas Christian vs. Boise State FIESTA BOWL January 4, 2010 University of Phoenix Stadium Glendale, AZ No. 3 TCU and No. 6 Boise State will meet in the Fiesta Bowl, marking the first time a BCS game other than the championship game had a matchup of unbeaten teams. It’s also the first time two teams from conferences without automatic bids to the BCS have played in the five big-money bowls in the same season.

This time, the so-called little guys will move their tussle to the big stage -- and the Fiesta Bowl doesn’t mind staging a rematch, which has got a thumbs-up from TV partner Fox. They might want to roll back the roof at Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium on Jan. 4, because the game should provide plenty of offensive fireworks. Iowa State vs. Minnesota INSIGHT BOWL December 31, 2009 ASU Sun Devil Stadium Tempe, AZ

Despite the close proximity between Iowa State and Minnesota and the intense rivalry each school has with Iowa, this will be the first meeting between these programs since the Gophers’ 53-29 victory at the Metrodome in 1997. Minnesota leads the series 22-2-1 and hasn’t lost to the Cyclones since 1898, yet they’ve only met twice since 1924. For more information and ticket sales visit www.insightbowl.com

Separated by just over 200 miles, Iowa State and Minnesota will travel roughly the same distance to the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. The journey was significantly longer for the Cyclones.

LIVE! SECTION JOURNEY – LIVE IN MANILA (NOMOTA) The question on everyone’s mind is does Journey’s newest singer sound like Steve Perry? From the standpoint of simply hitting the notes, yes he does. Does he do justice to the catalog vocally? Certainly. Does he or any of the other singers who’ve been put in the place of trying to fill the iconic former vocalist’s shoes have the warmth, soul and feeling that Mr. Perry did? Not even close. Not to discredit the talents of current vocalist Arnel Pineda at all. His voice soars without evidence of straining to hold it together. But with all due respect, he didn’t write the hits, he didn’t live the experiences and he didn’t pay the dues that the other members of Journey did. That being said, this is still a good DVD. Filmed in Pineda’s

homeland of the Phillipines, this captures the band playing to a crowd that maybe was more receptive to singer #3 in the lead vocalist slot since Perry bailed over 10 years ago. Their hometown boy now being the newest singer for Journey doesn’t hurt either. Nice photography, editing and good use of stage lighting throughout plus the fact that there’s 25 songs spread over the course of 2 discs make this worthy of the purchase price. Still one of rock’s most criminally underrated guitarists around, Neal Schon continues to deliver the goods with flawless precision and fire. You’ll find all the Journey hits you can think of in this package. Drummer Dean Castronovo sings a few tunes as well, and sounds more like Perry than anyone since good ol’ Steve left. The camera angles, lighting and editing may be of the most current technology to make this an overall nice package. But it’s no substitute for what the Perry led lineup of Journey brought to the forefront of their genre over 2 decades ago. – Stephen Wilkinson Rockzone Records, 2155 E.
