Bill decided to join Great Expectations because he was far too busy for traditional dating methods. Jian was looking for a man that was tall, handsome, humble, successful and educated which is exactly what she found in Bill. Bill had been a member for only two weeks when he selected Jian. From the beginning Jian told Bill what she was looking for, marriage with children. More specifically she wanted to have another baby, preferably a girl, before her next birthday. Bill was open to the possibility, but was unsure if he would be able to have children; little did he know that he

would receive the best birthday present that year. Jian was pregnant and told Bill on his 40th birthday, one day before Jian’s birthday baby Eva was born. Bill proposed to Jian on January 24th, the couple will be getting married on December 12, 2012, and are excited to spend their honeymoon together in Hawaii. Bill said that it’s crazy to look back and see what all he’s been through. In fact, a couple of days after joining he had buyer’s remorse and wanted to back out, but he’s so glad that he didn’t. Congratulations to Bill and Jian, and to baby Eva. We wish your family lots of love and happiness through the years.

With more than 125 acres of land and 2.5 miles of walking trails, the Phoenix Zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States. Approximately 1.4 million guests pass through the gates each year, making the Phoenix Zoo one of the most visited attractions in Arizona. While memberships, admissions and concessions cover some of the expense to operate and maintain the grounds of this beloved institution, the Zoo must also rely on fundraising events to provide proper care for more than 1,100 animals in the collection. ‘The ABCs of Death’

‘K-11’

This anthology film is comprised of 26 individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet and given free reign in choosing a word to create a story involving death. Playing exclusively at FilmBar. (NR - 129 minutes)

Goran Visnjic plays a record producer who comes around after binging on drink and drugs and finds himself in a section of the Los Angeles County Jail reserved for homosexuals, which is ruled by a transsexual named Mousey (Kate del Castillo). Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR - 100 minutes)

Joseph: You know that your anthology film is a failure when its best chapter was helmed by an amateur filmmaker whose short was selected by popular vote in an online competition. “T is for Toilet” is one of only two shorts featured in “The ABCs of Death” that are even remotely worth watching (the other one being “D is for Dogfight”). The other 24 of them range from pointlessly disgusting to simply pointless and nothing more - absent of any of the guilty pleasure that you typically get from watching such scenes in an ordinary horror flick with an actual plot. (Grade: F)

Stan: With a background firmly grounded in film production for over 25 years as a Script Supervisor which mirrors my own 20 plus years in production, the ‘osmosis process’ firmly takes hold as writer/director Jules Stewart’s solid script presents a view that very few of us may have relative to prison life. As the central character (Goran Visnjic) regains his composure after sobering up inside and adjusts to the environment he’s been suddenly thrust, “K-11” very neatly guides us to the unexpected conclusion with a voyeuristic edge that’s quite appealing. (Grade: B)

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Joseph: “K-11” is trashy, disconcerting and unscrupulous - the three key ingredients of the womenin-prison exploitation genre that was popularized back in the 1970’s. In fact, writer/ director Jules Stewart mother of “The Twilight Saga’s” Kristen Stewart adds a unique spin to the format, using characters that are actually gay, transsexual and transgender men, thereby augmenting the already alarming aspects of it all. Having said that, Stewart sometimes slips off either side of the thin line that separates seriousness from camp and some story elements in the movie are a bit muddled but this is certainly a piece of scandalous cinema. (Grade: B)

‘Old Goats’ The story of three older men who refuse to go quietly into the night of retirement and old age. Cantankerous and set in their ways, each man must come to terms with the sunset years in his own unique fashion.

Stan: Being a ‘Boomer’ (born between 1946-1984) and knowingly set in my ways, ‘Old Goats’ captured my heart as each of the seniors highlighted exhibited various aspects of my own personality. The one redeeming factor, I’m a forward thinking person so I tend to bend a lot more than most seniors. And yes, ‘Old Goats’ is a reminder of the hard cold reality, that there’s more years behind me than in front, and prompts one ‘not to go quietly into the night’, but rather robustly into the day! (Grade: C+)

‘Stoker’ Mia Wasikowska plays a friendless young woman who becomes increasingly infatuated with her uncle (Matthew Goode) who, having moved in with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Nicole Kidman), may have ulterior motives. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 98 minutes) Stan: Director Chan-wook Park creates a foreboding atmospheric setting for this story that starts as a coming of age of the younger household member (Mia Wasikowska) and slowly escalates into a household that’s reminiscent

of the classic ‘Dark Shadows’ afternoon soap opera of the late 60s, as the quirkiness’s of each of the family members begins to surface. With Nicole Kidman as the mother, and Matthew Goode as the uncle, the starring trio of actors ‘tour de force’ performances serves to ring true the thought of ‘normality is in the eye of the beholder’, and yes, I did substitute normal for beauty since both are so very subjective based on our own experiences. (Grade: B+) Joseph: “Stoker” is a poetically perverse motion picture. The new drama, which was directed by Chan-wook Park and written by Wentworth Miller - yes, the same Wentworth Miller who starred in FOX’s groundbreaking television series “Prison Break” breaks down the barriers of abnormality but it does so with literary refinement. In other words, it uses allegories and symbols to tell its story of savagery and strangeness. Having said that, the flick does take a tad too long to get to its explanatory backstory. But when it does, the floodgates are opened so wide that the viewer nearly drowns in its depravity. (Grade: B)

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

For the movie ‘The Pianist’ (2002), Adrien Brody lost 31lbs for the role of Wladyslaw Szpilman. Initially his weight was 161 lbs.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR - 91 minutes)

By Stan Robinson

“My earlier work centered around action films. I explained to my agents about each of those scripts and what I liked about them, what I didn’t quite like about them. During that process they were tuned to what I wanted and were on the lookout for a script with those qualities. The producers of ‘Stoker’ were also on the look out for a director who was the best fit for the material. A key factor for ‘Stoker’ is the storyboards. I meticulously storyboarded every single shot of the film before shooting, from the first shot to the last shot of the movie, in the order of the edit I envisioned. Using that technique, I was able to avoid any chaotic situation on set. “This film deals with family relationships and the emotions that runs between each member

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

of the family. At the same time, it is a coming of age story of a young girl. It’s very universal in its subject matter, with the thought that every young girl has gone through. There are a lot of films that have dealt with this subject matter but there aren’t many films that delve into a young girl being drawn to evil and mesmerized by it. You mentioned Nicole Kidman’s recent works. Nicole is an actor who, if she had chosen to do so, could have stayed on more stable choices with big films and made a lot of money. The fact that she has chosen to be adventurous about choices, makes her a very brave actor and she continues to make those courageous choices, its very, very admirable and commendable.” – Chan-wook Park

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Writer/Director Jules Stewart (‘K-11’) By Stan Robinson

“Independent filmmaking is almost impossible these days, just to get funded is a miraculous event, and then taking what funds you do have and in our case it wasn’t very much. We shot for 22 days at the jail, we shot the project very fast, to include what we called a ‘splinter unit’ with a second camera to pickup shots we just couldn’t get to. A major limitation was that we couldn’t shoot in the jail after dark, what helped was that we shot in summer so we had longer days but still had to wrap at dark.

“The feeling that we’re getting from screenings is that granted, it’s not a film for everyone, but that it has some very powerful moments. We took it to the Cannes Film festival for a screening for buyers and were surprised at how many people ‘didn’t leave’ but actually sat through the whole film. We were told it’s not normal, most people give it ten or fifteen minutes and they know if they like it or not. We were invited to the Torino Film Festival in Italy and received applause when it ended! An interesting factor is that although

it’s a ‘jail film’, it’s a different kind of a jail film, its unique enough to carry its own weight. ‘K-11’ is a real place that exist in Los Angeles Men’s County Jail, its been around since the 50s, not too many people know about it, and it’s a ‘fish out of water’ story about a record producer who has developed a drug problem and is dealing with his cheating wife, gets into a fight with a client and the client dies. He’s arrested and thrown into a world where he has to reinvent himself to survive.” – Jules Stewart

Filmmaker Taylor Guterson (‘Old Goats’) By Stan Robinson

“I came to know Bob, Brit, and Dave, the three ‘Old Goats’ in my personal life and never thought that they would have any connection to my filmmaking life at all, they aren’t actors, they didn’t have any interest in movies or acting any more than the average person. As I started to make movies and work with people who thought they were actors, I kept thinking ‘Why not just use people as themselves’ and the three of them really stuck out to me as people that should

be used as themselves and had to be seen on screen because every time I was around them in my real life, I kept thinking, I have to find a way to show these guys in a movie! “We made this film with a ‘zero budget’. We were a crew of two, Johnathan Boyer and myself, I owned the gear (cameras, sound, etc.) and I asked the three central characters if they would pay their own expenses along the way. We collectively, all of us who worked

on it, spent under $5,000 making this film. The biggest expense was actually taking the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, which is where we shot. Once the film was complete I did want to do a professional sound mix so that was the only pitch for money once the film was completed.” – Taylor Guterson

DOMAINE CHANDON & JAMES BEARD CHEFS COMBINE TO CREATE A SMASHING SUCCESS FOR THE 2013 SCOTTSDALE CULINARY FESTIVAL By Rhonni Moffitt, ArizonaVinesAndWines.com On March 7th, The Westin Kierland Resort showcased six James Beard award-winning chefs, as well as Napa’s DomaineChandon, for a spectacular showcase of culinary talent and liquid perfection. The 11th Annual Friends of James Beard Benefit Dinner is a regular segment of the week-long Scottsdale Culinary Festival which takes place this April. The reception, held on the Westin’s patio overlooking the golf course, provided an opportunity for guests to mingle while enjoying passed appetizers and a view of the sunset. DomaineChandon presented two sparkling wines for the prelude: Chandon Blanc de Noirs and étoile Rosé. Both proved to be beautiful complements to the hors d’oeuvres, which included tasty bites such as Cold Smoked Eel, Wagyu Beef Tenderloin (we went back for seconds on this one), Grouper Cheek Empanadas and Wild Boar bites.

course that consisted of a trio of American caviars alongside split-roasted veal bone marrow in sweet corn cachapas (think soft cornbread-type tortillas).

Chardonnay grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Muenier) along with the addition of Muscat which created a tasty dessert accompaniment.

The DomaineChandon Chardonnay showcased great depth, with richness as well as crisp acidity. The Pinot Meunier (not pronounced “manure” as directed by the DomaineChandon rep) was similar to a cross between a Beaujolais and spicy Zinfandel, a perfect food wine – food and wine both tasted better in combination than as their stand-alone components. They also produce a vibrant Pinot Noir, light and silky, that was paired with a gorgeous lamb loin prepared by Napa’s Chef Perry Hoffman.

Chandon did a great job of standing up as tall as the award-

After moving into the dining room, the six-course extravaganza proved to tantalize our taste buds, both food and wine alike. Members of DomaineChandon’s team shared stories about the wines we sipped as well as about the winery in Napa (and even a history of why we clink glasses). We were delighted to learn that DomaineChandon produces still wines in addition to the expected sparkling wines that are inspired by their French ancestry. The grapes that go into the still wines are left a little longer on the vine to ensure reduced acidity.

, ST. PATRICK S DAY BREWS So, St. Patrick’s Day is coming and you are looking for something a little different than the same old beer that everybody else is drinking…maybe something fun and exciting but still with that St. Patrick’s Day feel to it. Have we got some suggestions for you.

First, let’s talk Killian’s Irish Red. What’s that you say? Killian’s falls into the same old category? Not so fast because Killian’s has reinvented itself in a big way. You may know that Killian’s is one of the oldest brands in the world with the original recipe dating back to the 1860’s. In 1981 Coors Brewing introduced George Killian’s beer to the United States. It caught on immediately. In the early 1980’s

craft brewing was just starting to catch on and people embraced flavors that were different from the pale lagers they had been drinking. However, the recipe was not quite as authentic as it could have been. The beer was a little sweeter than the 1860 version. The folks at Coors are turning back the dial and releasing a new version of Killian’s that goes to show that everything comes back around again. The recipe update results in a rich roasted, full-bodied, well-balanced lager that maintains the signature ruby red color, but now is much closer to the original beer brewed in Enniscorthy Ireland. his friends, and it’s our friends we have in mind as we reintroduce the new look and taste of George Killian’s Irish Red,” said Katie Cowan, Killian’s brand manager. “This is a more robust, more complex lager, but still balanced and easy to drink with friends. It goes great with a wide variety of popular pub food, like wings, burgers and fish and chips.”

But you say you still want a stout for St. Patrick’s Day? Okay, we have three in mind for you. First up is Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout from Anderson Valley. Always available in bottles and released in green cans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this is the same deep, rich, dark oatmeal stout that Anderson Valley has always made and the bronze medal winner at the 2010 World Beer cup. Named after the Boontling (a unique dialect spoken in the Boonville area) name for Hendy Woods State Park, a deep redwood forest with a tree canopy so thick it can seem like nighttime at high noon, this beer lives up to its namesake. Have it by itself, with dessert or as dessert or have it with your corned beef and cabbage. No matter what it will make your St. Patrick’s Day special. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Legend has it that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, chasing them into the sea after the attacked him during a fast he was undertaking on top of a hill. Modern science suggests that this story is probably not true as there is no evidence that there ever were snakes on Ireland. Regardless, the fine folks at Lakefront, most famous for New Grist, their award winning Gluten Free beer, release Snake Chaser Stout annually. This velvety stout pours black with a creamy tan head. Toffee and coffee aromas in this hearty ale are perfectly balanced. Lightly hopped, the flavor is full of the roasted malts and finishes with very low sweetness. A very smooth beer, it is the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day... whether you’re Irish or not. It pairs well with dark chocolate (as long as it’s not too sweet), as well as many grilled entrees, which complement the roasted flavors of the dark malts. Of course many of you prefer that cascading beauty of a nice nitrogen stout and we have an option for you. Left Hand makes their incredible Milk Stout Nitro

Great Food Pairings with Deschutes River Ale! Hello again craft beer lovers, this past Sunday I was fortunate enough to spend the afternoon at Devoured, a culinary festival held each and every year at the Phoenix Art Museum. Why is this important? Because there was beer of course and one new brew really caught my attention. I enjoy Devoured because it gave me an opportunity to find these great new beers along with amazing food pairings. The beer that stood out this year for this very reason was Deschutes River Ale. A very session-able 4% ABV. and late Cascade hop additions make this light and tangy golden ale the perfect partner for mixing and matching spring cuisine.Quick note, although Deschutes refers to this brew as a golden ale, its American Pale characteristics really shine through and it’s these qualities that give it an edge for a wide variety of chow. My preferred pairing of the day was River Ale and deviled eggs. Yes I said deviled eggs! There were at least three different variations on the theme this year, and all were quite enjoyable. One was deep fried, while another stuffed with herbs was extremely enticing, but the most exciting for me was an egg deviled with bacon and mustard aioli. This recipe came from Relish Burger Bistro @ the Phoenician Resort. They referred to it as “Bacon & Eggs”. Who knew breakfast food would be my favorite for pairing with beer? I suppose technically speaking it makes a lot of sense. Bacon and eggs with a light an effervescent, citrusy brew can’t possibly be a bad thing!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

All in all, many adventurous food and beer combinations made for an extremely enjoyable afternoon, but don’t wait until next year’s festival to give it a try yourself! Until next week, Cheers!

which pours out of the long black faucet with a richness other beers can only dream of. The dark sweet stout settles in the glass and releases tiny, tight nitrogen bubbles resulting in a creamy head which makes for the perfect drink. Until last year, you had to go to one of the many bars in town that offered this treat on tap, but the folks at Left Hand wanted you to be able to enjoy this at home as well. So, after

So there you have it, some alternatives to the same old stuff you always drink on St. Patrick’s Day. They all go great with traditional Irish Food and they all will chase a nice glass of Irish Whiskey. Is there anything else you need for St. Patrick’s Day? How about a ride home?

years of research and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, they have recently released America’s first bottled nitrogen beer. Instead of relying on a foreign object to release the nitrogen into the beer upon opening, Left Hand has developed a method of leaving the nitrogen gas in suspension to be aroused when the bottle is opened and poured hard straight down the middle of the glass. The result is the same cascade effect that you get when you drink it on tap. The taste is spectacular either way. On draft or in the bottle, Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout is truly America’s Stout.

At one time, there were more Irish living in New York City, than in Dublin, Ireland.

The very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not in Ireland, but in Boston in 1737.

Tradition says wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, who pinch anyone they can see.

The harp is the symbol of Ireland. The color green is also commonly associated with Ireland, also known as “the Emerald Isle.”

Over 94 million people plan to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day.

Lucky Charms, a favorite cereal brand among many, young and old, was created in 1963, with its popular mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun. Its jig is a memorable tune for many, including the young at heart.

St. Patrick did not actually drive snakes out of Ireland; the snakes represent the pagans that he converted to Christianity.

Since 1962, the Chicago River has been dyed green in honor of the day.

On any given day, 5.5 million pints of Guinness, the famous Irish stout brand, are consumed around the world. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

If the gruesome cases on “Criminal Minds” don’t make him lose his appetite, Joe Mantegna can visit his own restaurant to satisfy it. The star of CBS’ long-running Wednesday drama pays constant homage to his hometown with Taste Chicago, which he and wife Arlene own and operate in Burbank, Calif. “I have a pretty good day job,” he muses. “I don’t need this restaurant to pay our bills, so we don’t skimp on anything, and our goal is to just make it the best Chicago-type restaurant.” Other transplants from Illinois appreciate the effort, since Mantegna often sees fellow Chicagoans at the site. “They say, ‘Wow, this is really like being back home in Chicago.’ It’s a little more expensive than if you’re trying to do mass production and just throw anything out there; we serve real Chicago hot dogs and real Italian beef, and I feel good about it. It does well enough that it pays for itself.”

EAT EGGS FOR BREAKFAST TO FIGHT FLAB Eggs are the best way to start the day for those who want to lose weight. A major UK review of studies into the effects of eating eggs has found that egg contains a powerful ingredient that can help to cut the amount of calories people go on to eat at lunch and dinner. Scientists say boiled, fried, poached or scrambled, eggs keep people fuller for longer compared with other common breakfast foods. This appears to help people who are desperately trying to resist tempting but naughty afternoon snacks such as biscuits, cake or chocolate.

greater weight loss and lost inches around the waist. “While more research is needed, particularly on longterm weight loss, the evidence suggests a promising role for eggs in weight management,” the Daily Express quoted Dr Ruxton as saying. He also noted two additional benefits of including eggs in

a weight loss diet. The first is portion control. Dr Ruxton said that since eggs come in a fixed unit of around 78 calories per egg, this helps people to recognise how much they have consumed. Secondly, he said, the vitamin D content of eggs may help to support general health in overweight people since vitamin D levels are known

The review, published in the journal Network Health Dietitian, also revealed that the specific proteins found in eggs are far superior to other types when it comes to keeping hunger at bay. Dietitian Dr Carrie Ruxton examined the results of six different studies over eight years. The studies show a consistent effect on satiety and shortterm energy intake. Two studies found changes in appetite-related gut hormones, which may explain why eggeaters feel full. A single, longer-term study revealed that people who ate an egg breakfast rather than having cereal had a significantly March 13th, 2013 - March 19th, 2013

to be low in this group, leading to an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease. “There are few natural sources of vitamin D in the diet so eggs can play a role here too,” he added. An average egg contains a high level of protein at 6.5g, representing 13 per cent of an adult’s daily requirement.
