Success Story John and Kathryn John and Kathryn had both been members of Great Expectations for six months when the pair selected each other at a speed dating event. They both decided to join Great Expectations because they were looking for a higher quality dating experience. However, the only standing that anyone is likely to do for the film itself is the kind that is required when walking out. Although it is always nice when a movie transports viewers to another time and place, this particular motion picture’s purpose in doing so gets somewhat lost along the way. However, if watching characters wander around aimlessly while spouting philosophies that were placed between their lips lacking any finesse from the filmmaker whatsoever sounds like fun to you, then - by all means - have at it. Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music.” Unfortunately, save for a sprinkle of such eccentric ingenuity here and there throughout its nearly 2-hour runtime, writer/director P.J. Hogan’s new dramedy never again matches said sequence’s creative flair. Moreover, the movie - which, among other things, tackles the topic of mental illness - ironically suffers from a bipolar disorder in which it asks us to laugh one moment and cry the next with nary enough time in between each tonal U-turn. (Grade: D)
‘Ginger & Rosa’ Elle Fanning and Alice Englert play inseparable friends who, while growing up in 1960s London, find their relationship redefined as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 - 89 minutes) Stan: Writer/director Sally Potter’s latest triggered that long suppressed memory of my parents and grandmother in October of 1962, huddled and grasping for any news of the stalemate that was occurring. I was about to turn 16 that month, a sophomore in high school, and quite perturbed that my birthday was taking second place. This view of teens, from across the waters on the other side of the planet, puts into perspective the totality of the psychological effect through the eyes of youngstersgrappling to understand it all. Looking back on that time through ‘Ginger & Rosa’ eyes, let’s not ever come that close again. (Grade: C+) Joseph: Nearly every actor who appears in writer/director Sally Potter’s new drama “Ginger & Rosa” deserves a standing

Joseph: There is one question that will plague your thoughts each and every solitary second while watching “Wrong.” That question is: “Why?” To say that the new comedy from writer/ director Quentin Dupieux does not make any sense whatsoever is an unabashed understatement. It is certain to be the most mentally incompetent motion picture that you see all year. However, that pinnacle level of preposterousness is precisely what makes the movie so astonishingly amusing. Having said that, Dupieux does have trouble keeping such a thin story interesting throughout despite a relatively brief runtime - especially compared to his whacky work of genius “Rubber.” (Grade: C)

Airdo “It is a really sweet love story but it is also about this woman finding her voice - figuring out who she is and then sharing that with the world. I think that is the one thing that we all as people have a hard time with. At least I do. Who am I really? What do I really believe in? What is actually important to me? We get so swept up in sort of what the media tells us to care about and all these other influences that we really have to dig down deep and figure out what is it that we as human beings really care about and want for ourselves. When you figure that out, you see who you really are. “It is so interesting. The older that we get and the different
stages we go through in life, it seems like we become different people. But I think that the truth is you are always the same person. You just discover these new things about yourself. I think that is what this character is doing. It is about self-discovery and embracing that self. It is about finding your voice and embracing that voice. “I really loved playing this character and hope that people will go out and see the movie. It is based on [screenwriter Wendy Kout’s] life story. She was on set every single day and I was able to draw a lot of the character from her. That was really gift. We made this movie for not a lot of money. The one thing that this

When I see that, I want to ask ‘Why’, which is also resounded throughout the film, and as I think about it, its that question that’s sure to elicit a multitude of answers which could be the underlying purpose of the filmmaker, to ask the question.(Grade: C)

Writer/Director Sally Potter (‘Ginger & Rosa’) By Stan Robinson “I always think its rather mysterious how films finally come onto the page, I’ve written all my films and its still a mystery to me how the ideas really arrive, its seems to be like a moment sitting down and facing the blank page because I still write long hand on paper but it like looking into the void, into this kind of blankness and into that blankness comes an image of a film as if its already made, so I often feel as if all I’m doing is looking into this screen in my brain and writing down what I see there. I don’t know if that’s a trick of the mind, but that the way in which I write and of course those images and thoughts come from a mixture of memory, observation, and the imagination where you put together things from your experience as well as things you don’t know about and imagine yourself into them.
“This is a story with universal themes even though it’s set in a different time, and as we now are facing what could be the end of the world through possibly climate change, its good to look at how the human race managed to survive an earlier time when it

“We were kind of intimidated by [James Franco]. It was actually scary for us. He has this weird accent and does not look like somebody that you see every day. I think that we were all very much in our characters’ heads and mindsets. Our characters are drawn to him because he was hardcore just like us but we were very skeptical of him. He was intimidating and scary and that is how our characters kind of viewed themselves. I think there are only a few moments when we thought that he was funny and those were when he was making jokes or being charming and cute. “It is so upsetting when people think of it as [exploitive] because it’s not. That is just [director Harmony Korine’s] style. It is not grotesque. It is not trying to exploit people. We are not naked throughout the film. Even during our sex scene, we purposely didn’t show things because we
didn’t want to. Harmony was never like, ‘You need to be naked for this film.’ It is just a part of the story - and it is very real. “For instance, the scene where [Rachel Korine’s character] is topless with all of those college boys - that is a very real situation that happens to girls all of the time when they have too much to drink. And it could have been a very bad situation. It could have lead to rape or whatever and Harmony makes sure to show things like that because it is very real. I don’t think that this film exploited us in any way. I think that it just showed a different side to us. We were playing these crazy girls. And it was such a great opportunity for us to be a part of because people haven’t seen us do anything like this before.” – Ashley Benson

“When I started writing ‘Wrong’, it was a that precise moment the perfect timing for what I wanted to do, and I don’t why the story came to me, I was writing down some thoughts and suddenly every started making sense. It was two years ago that I started writing it and it fell into place. The script for ‘Wrong’ was 74 pages and we shot the film in 22 days. We were shooting pretty fast, some days we were accomplishing 8 minutes of finished segments a day, other days with complicated settings and circumstances we were able to only shoot a minute and a half of completed sequences.

Horror and Sci-Fi at Phoenix Film Festival By Randy Montgomery The International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival takes places at the Phoenix Film Festival (April 4-11) and features eight showcase films, six competition features and four shorts programs. Festival Director Andrea Beesley is excited about the selections and guests. Beesley is raving about The Ghastly Love of Johnny X. “It was the last film shot on Kodak’s black and white stock. It’s a beautiful looking film. We have the director here on Friday and the following Wednesday, we have the star.” Meg Foster will be in attendance for They Live, the horror classic. “I’ve heard people talk about what a great guest she is. It should be
awesome to have her at the festival,” says Beesley. Former Lions Gate Producer and current FEARnet President Peter Block will be visiting the festival to present Saw. “His credentials are pretty impressive”, says Beesley. “He produced pretty much every Lions Gate horror feature. Fan will enjoy the chance to interact with him.” Teller (Penn & Teller) will present Play Dead With Teller. “This movie is really unique. It’s a filmed version of a stage show performed in New York. It should be terrifying and fun,” says Beesley. “Teller should be an interesting guest…everyone knows him as the silent one. Don’t forget about the Shorts. Every year the programmers up their game.”

Arizona Wineries Plan for Night under the Big Top By: Alison BailinBatz If you are a wine lover, the past 10 years have been an exciting time to live – and drink – in Arizona. From Verde Valley to Sonoita to Willcox, vineyards and wineries across this great state have worked hard to earn national taste awards, market their regions as tourism hot spots and partner with some of the biggest and best culinary events here and beyond. But, you know when you can really tell an industry – wine or otherwise – has really made it? When they are able to pay it forward and give back to their communities-at-large. One of the most impressive examples of how our Arizona wine region is giving back is happening on April 6th as five local wineries – in partnership with Alliance Beverage and Sonoran Brewing Company – will help transform the Phoenix Children’s Museum’s 48,000 square feet of hands-on, fun and educational activities for children aged newborn to 10 into a distinctly adult “Big Top” black-tie gala complete withdazzling aerial performances, celebrity chefs clowning around and whimsically wonderful wines. The event – Cirque de Musée – is a new concept to both the wineries participating and the museum itself. While fundraisers at the museum note each year it hosts a large-scale gala to help support its Every Child Program, which provides free or reduced museum admission to families battling financial, emotional or circumstantial challenges, the sheer magnitude of this gala, not to mention its Cirque-focused theme, is something totally new to even the most seasoned eventgoer in Arizona.

GERMAN BEER an English ale with a cleaner, crisper finish. Alaskan Amber is an American beer brewed in the Altbier style. Bamberg is well known for smoke beers, but has a variety of styles available there. Smoke beer has been described as “liquid bacon” and the flavor comes from smoking the malts over hardwood until it absorbs
Mention beer from Germany and most people think of one of two things. Either Oktoberfest or the mass produced lagers, mostly pilsners that we can buy relatively inexpensively in the United States. German beer is so much more than that. In fact, I will let you in on a little secret, some of these beers are not even made in Germany. But that isn’t what we are here to talk about, so let’s get to the topic of the rest of German beers. German beer styles are as varied as the different cities throughout the country. Granted most of them are lagers or wheat beers, but the brewers in this country really show you how to make these two styles that many people take for granted. Koelsch is a hybrid beer that comes from the town of Cologne. By agreement, this beer is only produced in Cologne. Legend has it that at one point, in order to call your beer a koelsch, you had to be able to see the steeple of the Cologne Cathedral from your

brewery. This beautiful cathedral, which dates back to 1248 and stands 515 feet high, was originally built to house the remains of the Three Wise Men of biblical fame. The light, straw colored beer is first warm fermented and then cold conditioned which crates different flavor profiles than a traditional style lager. Light with a pronounced, but not extreme, hoppiness, this beer is traditionally sold in 10 oz stange style glasses, a short glass with straight sides. A waiter will come to your table with a tray full of these beers and mark off how many he leaves you. At the end you settle up based on the number of tick marks made on his sheet and move on. Fruh is one of the better known Koelsch breweries. Just a short hop up the Rhine River from Cologne is Dusseldorf. Much like its neighbor, Dusseldorf has its own hybrid beer. Altbier is produced by nine breweries and, like Koelsch, is warm fermented and lagered. It is, however, a darker beer with more of a fruity flavor to it. It is similar to AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Krombacher is truly an amazing beer. You can typically find these beers on tap at Brat Haus in Scottsdale. Bavaria, and especially Munich, is definitely the beer capital of Germany. Boasting the most breweries and the largest variety of beers, this is the place many people think of when they think Germany and beer. Whether it is the rich, magnificent Dark Dunkel of Andechs Brewery, a small monastery south of Munich, or the amazing Pilsners of Munich proper, or the incredible wheat beers from Kelheim, Bavaria is the place to drink. Kelheim is home to Schneider brewery and when you talk about wheat beer, you have to realize that the history of wheat beer is also the history of the Schneider brewing family and its famous Schneider Weisse. Georg I Schneider, as the wheat beer pioneer and creator of the Schneider Weisse Original recipe (which is still used today), is revered by all wheat beer connoisseurs.Two-hundred years ago, wheat beer could only be brewed by the Bavarian royal family in their breweries. In 1872, King Ludwig II discontinued brewing wheat beer due to a steady decline in sales. That same year, he sold Georg I Schneider the exclusive right to brew wheat beer. Thus, the Schneider Family saved wheat beer from extinction. Today, Georg VI Schneider is running the brewery in Kelheim, which the family acquired in 1927 and has remained the Schneider Weisse brewery to this day. It is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria; wheat beer has been brewed

there without interruption since its founding in the year 1607. Schneider makes a variety of wheat beers, but their Original Weisse is, perhaps, the best known. The outstanding Aventinus, a doppleweizenbock, is an amazingly smooth dark beer with a deceptive 8% ABV. The secret story about this beer is that it was actually created by a woman. Mathilde Schneider was the widow of Georg III Schneider and ran the brewery supervising the development of this amazing beer. For a real treat, try the Eisbock that is made from the Aventinus base. The other unique beer from this brewery is Edel Weiss. This organic hefeweizen is lighter in color than the Original and is brewed as a tribute to the days that the brewery was located in Munich and participated in the Oktoberfest. After a fire destroyed the Munich brewery, all production was moved to Kelheim and they were no longer eligible to participate in Oktoberfest. One of the interesting things about this beer is its use of Cascade hops, a traditional American hop. This hop adds a nice bitterness to the beer without overwhelming the delicate wheat profile of the beer. This amazing beer is now available in Arizona on draft and Centurion’s Bar Maximus, 2nd Avenue and Roosevelt Street, will be the first to pour it. On April 4th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Centurion will be hosting a very special tasting to introduce this unique beer to Arizona. There you have a very brief look at the beers of Germany. If it makes you thirsty, pick up something German and give it a try.

Young and old alike will start to experience that yearning for movement and recall that innate desire to admire all things naturally beautiful in our desert without the consequence of the unwanted moistness notoriously known as Arizona swamp ass. Over the next few months, the temperature is near ideal giving those searching for outdoor activities, a plethora of options. Once the heat hits, people seem to ditch the fact that cacti and sand are attractive qualities belonging to our home state; therefore, party alfresco now. Music in the Garden has been a weekly event held at the Desert Botanical Garden since utopian weather graced the Sonoran earlier in the month. Like all wonderful
things, it will end with the coming of the intense sun. This week, Cuban rhythms and American jazz will float amongst the four thousand species of desert flora as Phoenicians stir the atmosphere with sometimes, hilariously unflattering dance moves. For those blessed with Latin grooving abilities, show off what you got and head down to the garden. To accompany the entertainment, a feast of grilled tri-tip smothered in chimichurri, complimented by black beans and tortillas will be available for purchase. A cash bar will also be set up to provide you with the liquid comforts often needed to loosen up stiff joints and nerves. The 14th annual Chandler Jazz Festival will offer free performances by some of the best musicians in the Valley’s current jazz scene, as well as headlining concerts showcasing classic and modern Latin jazz. The two-day festival returns to Downtown Chandler Friday April 5th and Saturday April 6th, and will feature more than 20 bands performing a variety of jazz styles at both indoor and outdoor venues. The festival’s main stage is located in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, 3 S. Arizona Ave., and music is scheduled there from 4:45 to 9:15pm on April 5, and noon to 9:15pm on April 6. The highlight on Friday night will be the band El Chicano, a Latino jazz band started in East Los Angeles more than 40 years ago. Saturday night’s main stage schedule is headlined by Marcos Crego and the Cuban Tribe. The complete entertainment schedule is available online at www.chandleraz.gov/ jazz and features performances by some of the best musical talent in Arizona, including Beth Lederman, Fred Forney, Royce Murray, Keith McKelley, Ira Hill, The Mason Affair, Desert Dixie, and others. The Willis Jr. High Jazz Band and the Chandler Gilbert Community College Big Band will also perform. In addition to the music, food and drinks will be for sale, and artists and vendors will be displaying their wares in the park on Friday and Saturday. The festival’s traditional interactive music session for children called How Cool is Jazz will be at the main stage from 3 to 3:45pm.

Soilwork is touring in support of their new, ninth studio release – an epic double-disc album entitled The Living Infinite, which released recently on Nuclear Blast Records. This latest offering follows the band’s ultra-successful 2010 release The Panic Broadcast, which easily cracked the Billboard Top 100 with its first-week’s sales. ALBUM REVIEWS Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer Offer up Stirring Child Ballads, Caitlin Rose Makes a Decent Stand-In Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer’s Child Ballads is a stirring collection of traditional English and Scottish ballads you’ll want to listen to over and over again. Whether singing about a man who begs his queen to lift her curse on his barren wife (“Willie’s Lady”) or waxing philosophical about life’s mysteries (“Riddles Wisely Expounded”), Mitchell and Hamer infuse these centuries-old tunes with life and vitality. Mitchell’s spritely vocals match well with Hamer’s richer, thicker voice and it is astounding how often their impassioned performances will make you think these tales have come from their own life experiences. This record transports you to another time and place, where knights fought for glory, bards told rousing tales, and kings raised and routed kingdoms. This duo has created a unique, beautiful record that is not to be missed. Nashville singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose’s new album, The Stand-In, is chock full of country, folk, and pop numbers that stick largely to the ups and downs of relationships. The brokenhearted country pop of “No One to Call” gives you an idea of how this record will play out, though on numbers like “I Was Cruel” she plays the other side of the coin in lamenting her ability to be the one breaking hearts. Rose gives solid vocal performances throughout, reminding you of a slightly throatier Zooey Deschanel—particularly on the upbeat pop track, “Menagerie”—and she makes the album’s largely solemn, difficult relationship-centered material relatively engaging if this is your thing. Simple and authentic, though lacking in the variety department, The Stand-In is a decent album.

The Arizona Jazz Festival returns to the Wigwam Resort and Spa this spring featuring a three-day festival showcasing renowned Old School, R&B and Jazz talent from all over the world. Expected to attract more than 12,000 music aficionados, The Arizona Jazz Festival will set the stage for 20 national acts on Friday, April 12th through Sunday, April 14th, 2013. The star-studded lineup includes three-time Grammy Award winner and No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts, “The Original” Jill Scott,
taking the stage as the headliner Friday, April 12th. She is most known for her soft and sensuous melodies (Who Is Jill Scott?, The Light of the Sun) and as an actress starring in films (Sins of a Mother, Why Did I Get Married). HEART ROCK ‘N ROLLS WITH A NEW TOUR ‘FANATIC’ Sunday, April 7th at Celebrity Theatre 2013 Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famers Heart is back with new sounds, a new book and a ‘Fanatic’ tour that makes a stop at Celebrity Theatre at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 7th. Introducing Fanatic, Heart’s 12th album of original material, and their first ever autobiography called Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll. Fanatic, like its predecessor, 2010’s Red Velvet Car, captures vintage ‘70s Heart with its blend of hard rock and soulful, folk-inspired tracks, while it also sounds contemporary. Their new memoir Kicking and Dreaming tells the story of Heart’s early days as being one of the first bands whose focal points were two female musicians in the-then male dominated world of rock. Along with the music, their story also touches on the personal, such as the sisters’ lives
(Ann and Nancy Wilson) growing up as part of a military family; their romantic relationships and breakups; and Ann’s battle with her weight. Ann and Nancy are arguably two of the most influential women in rock and roll. Heart struck it big in the ‘70s with hit albums like Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen and Magazine, not to mention a string of unforgettable singles that are still considered classic rock mainstays - “Crazy On You,” “Barracuda” and “Magic Man” just to name a few. With the band now in its fourth decade and having sold 35 million albums worldwide, it’s obvious Heart is as viable as ever. Congratulations to 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Heart!
