At 19 years old, Morgan Frazier looks like the perfect combination of sugar and spice, and the best part of it is, she sounds like it too. And she should. She has been developing her talent since she started performing at the age of 5. She made her first album at 9, picked up the guitar and started writing at 10 and won her first Nashville songwriting competition at 12, beating out much older, more experienced writers. That caught the attention of all the right people and Morgan found herself in the writers’ room with Nashville’s best, including Dean Dillon (George Strait’s “The Chair”) and Paul Overstreet (Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen”). She’s now out promoting her first single, a humorous look at finding the perfect guy, “Yellow Brick Road.” —Country Weekly. Additional amenities such as second-vehicle parking ($40) and private Port-A-Pottys ($120) are available for purchase until April 5. Camping renewals for 2014 are available starting April 5. The event’s live auction raised more than $800,000 and featured one-of-a-kind experiences including a trip for four to the MLB All-Star Game in New York, a romantic vacation for two to Florence and Venice, Italy, a oncein-a-lifetime trip for two to Buenos Aires, Argentina, a 2013 Mustang GT courtesy of Sanderson Ford, a wine experience in Sonoma, Calif. for two couples, and an ultimate D-backs Road Trip experience for four. The theme of the gala was “delivering dreams for kids who need us.” Pepsi Bottling General Manager Ron Goodson, and his wife Anita, served as dinner cochairs for the evening. In addition, University of Phoenix President Dr.

Bill Pepicello and his wife, Kris, welcomed guests as they entered the event sponsored by University of Phoenix. Senator Jon Kyl received the Lee T. More than 700 people were in attendance and enjoyed dinner on the infield of Chase Field followed by a live performance by multi-platinum band Chicago, who started the night with “Make Me Smile” which was the band’s first Top 10 record and peaked at number nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970, and continued with several hits throughout the evening, including “Saturday in the Park”.

ALPIN HONG LIVE AT MIM Friday, April 5th at 7:30 pm

Whirlwind American tours and performances across the globe have earned pianist Alpin Hong the reputation as a modern-day Pied Piper. His combination of stunning technique, emotional range, and rare humor continues to bring audiences young and old to their feet. The New York Times lauded his “crystalline energy... clear and persuasive ideas ... and remarkable breadth of coloration” and called him “a pianistic firebrand” in a review of his standing-room-only New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Rooted in extensive classical training and a background in skate-

boarding, snowboarding, martial arts, and videogames, Hong is a creative force unmatched in his youthful vivacity and boundless energy. His astonishing ability to connect with people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds distinguishes him and shapes his evolving performance style. The Ocala Star-Banner has called Hong “Classical for the iPod generation.”

Hong’s uniquely humorous and visionary approach to arts education has resulted in artistic residencies from coast-to-coast. In recognition of the pianist’s gift for communicating his passion for music to audiences of all ages, The McGraw-Hill Companies honored him with the Robert Sherman

Checking in with

Melissa Peterman A prank call to George Clooney and a forbidden cupcake on a toy car make for pretty gentle gags, which are the basis of ABC’s “Bet on Your Baby,” premiering Saturday, April 6. Host Melissa Peterman says once on set with toddlers and their parents, she realized how much fun it could be. “There are a bunch of different games, and what I like about it is the kids have no idea they are being involved,” Peterman says. “They are just being toddlers.” In one challenge, a dad told his son to hold a ball “no matter what” and explained he would be right back. “A remote control car comes in with a cupcake on it,” Peterman says. “That’s kid kryptonite. We are all watching this happen, (thinking) ‘Of course he is going to drop it.’ This sweet little boy puts his foot out in front of the car and says, ‘No, get back.’ He did what his dad told him. It is so sweet to watch.” Peterman, a mom, knows how to have a little fun with the kids, and in one segment has them make pretend prank calls. One is to Barbara Walters, telling her to invite Peterman on set. Another is to George Clooney and she tells the child to say, “You were a fool to never have loved Melissa.” Peterman had just finished another season of “Baby Daddy” and has another new show, “Dancing Fools,” both on ABC Family on May 29. She’s also been working on her stand-up act and did a couple of shows in the fall. “They went very well,” Peterman says. “But there is always that Catch22 – you like to have people you know in the audience. (They say) ‘Oh, you are so funny!’ Then you come to work Monday” and discover the audience was stacked.

‘Hunky Dory’ Minnie Driver plays a drama teacher who, in the summer of 1976, fights sweltering heat and general teenage apathy to put on an end-of-term version of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR - 109 minutes) Joseph: “Hunky Dory” appears to be the United Kingdom’s answer to “Glee.” Both properties feature similar themes - especially when it comes to the uphill climb faced by the arts in public education. Both also break into song at seemingly spontaneous times with spectacularly spirited effect. However, unlike FOX’s wildly popular television program, director Marc Evans’ new dramedy cannot keep said spirit alive when the singing stops. In other words, the story suffers from being entirely too tame, thereby leaving viewers less interested in what is going on at the moment and more impatiently waiting for the next musical number. (Grade: D)

‘The Place Beyond the Pines’

Joseph: “The Place Beyond the Pines” is clandestinely epic. That is to say that writer/director Derek Cianfrance’s new drama is every bit as monumentally entertaining as not only one summer blockbuster but an entire trilogy except instead of big-budget special effects to astound audiences it utilizes gigantic and genuine emotions. In fact, its story is so intensely arresting that you will not be able to take your eyes off of the screen for the entire duration of its 140-minute runtime while the powerful journey and its compelling consequences will remain with you long after the end credits have rolled. (Grade: A)

Ryan Gosling plays a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover (Eva Mendes) and their newborn child - a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop (Bradley Cooper) navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective (Ray Liotta). Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 140 minutes) Stan: It has been quite some time and numerous screenings ago that after a few moments in, I had no idea of how a story may end. Writer/ director Derek Cianfrance’s excellently presented story with its mini-series feel, excellent performances by the well known cast, and deliberate pacing, ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ psychologically escalates as the inevitable events of the collision course of the two central characters. By all means, add this film to your ‘Must see’ list. (Grade: A-)

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

‘The Sapphires’ Miranda Tapsell, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy and Shari Sebbens play Australian Aboriginal girls who learn about love, friendship and war when they are discovered by a talent scout (Chris O’Dowd) and their all-girl group entertains the U.S.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Stan: For a bit of history, drama, comedy, and music, all in one film, ‘The Sapphires’ has it all. As a Vietnam veteran in Vietnam the same year of the story time of the film, director Wayne Blair gives us a history lesson on the Aborigines’ struggle for equality in their own land of Australia, a stark reminder of war-torn country of Vietnam, and a wonderful musical experience as the girls learn to sing ‘soul music’. A pleasant memory triggered by the film, our unit built the stage in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam for the Bob Hope USO tour featuring Raquel Welch that entertained the troops in 1968. (Grade: B+)

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Producer Dan Lupovitz (‘Hunky Dory’) By Joseph J. Airdo “Well, it has high school kids singing so we definitely have some stuff in common with ‘Glee.’ I don’t think that it is a bad thing to be compared to that show at all. We are similar in very attractive ways and we are different in very attractive ways. We are not as much about performance as ‘Glee’ is and we are certainly not as slick. And we are Welsh! “There was a project in Canada many years ago called the Langley Schools Music Project where a teacher got students to pick songs that they liked and did homemade recordings of them as a way to teach them how to appreciate music. That kind of teaching influences kids in

different ways and teaches them how to learn in different ways than just the traditional courses of math, science and English. It really does affect children in their education and it makes them fall in love with things like music, which becomes such a gigantically influential part of our lives. “We all have high school experiences that shape us in many ways and we feel like those are very personal and specific to us. But I learned that a lot of the things that I thought were

troops in 1968 Vietnam. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 - 99 minutes)

unique to me in my own angst and drama of being a teenager were actually very similar to the things that high school kids in the UK in 1976 had to deal with as well. I learned that being a teenager is a really universal experience.” – Dan Lupovitz

Actor Dane DeHaan (‘The Place Beyond the Pines’) By Joseph J. Airdo Actress Rooney Mara from the movie ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’(2011) is one of four children born to New York Giants executive Timothy Christopher Mara.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Robert Downey Jr. came up with the idea for the disguise as a cross dresser for the movie ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows’ (2011).

“‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ was amazing. To work with [director Derek Cianfrance] was challenging and hard and ultimately unbelievably rewarding. He just has this way of working that is not only collaborative but is incredibly creative. And he puts so much trust in you as an artist. I just felt so whole after working on the film. And now seeing the film, this is the most proud that I have been of my work. I’m just really excited for the movie to be shown to the world.” – Dane DeHaan AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Director Wayne Blair (‘The Sapphires’) By Stan Robinson

“The Sapphires” was originally a stage show back in 2005, I was a good friend of the writer of the show and I worked with the stage show production. When I decided to bring it to the screen, my experience in short film and television, and directing theater and being a part of the stage show, I knew the story a little bit better than most. Preproduction became a very important factor because of the tight schedule. Myself and the cinematographer Warwick Thornton and we were very prepared, more so with this film because of the tight schedule, and it’s not just a straight drama, there’s music, there’s dancing, and shooting in five different locations in six weeks.

“Its 1968 and tension throughout the world, there’s an Aboriginal mission with four young girls who are counted as 2nd class citizens and counted with kangaroos, and wombats. And what they do is battle the status quo. They meet this alcoholic, womanizing, Irish roustaboutbuffoon who has a heart of gold. Together, they are so talented but only in country and western music, and he gives them a taste of soul music. All each of them really want is equality, love, and want to be free. So, where do they go, to Vietnam at the height of its war to perform for the American troops in the cold face of a war that nobody wanted. They fall in love, the live, they die and they come back home. It’s a film about self-actualization, and family.” – Wayne Blair

Actor William Fichtner (‘Wrong’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I was attracted to this character as I was attracted to the film. I thought it was completely whacked. The first time I read it, I called my agent and said, ‘What part are you asking me to look at? Because there is a guy in here named Master Chang. But he’s a white guy and kind of like a dog guru with half of his face burned off by acid.’ And I was like, ‘Do I need to go on and on why I want to work in this?’ “I can’t tell you how many times when I’ve read a script and my agent told me to look at one part which is a leading man sort of part and I went, ‘That is not the guy. The other guy wearing a dress - that’s really cool.’ That is what attracts me. I love quirky

journeys or sometimes even rough journeys. To me, it’s more important to find a real guy. What does he care about? I have got to answer that question because if I can figure that out then it makes him real. “If you live long enough on this planet, you meet people who are spiritually evolved. I think that he is incredibly wealthy. I think that he wrote this book. I think that he has this point of view on how to handle people and their pets. Do I think that he was born with Chang as his last name? No! But somewhere along the line, he felt like this was probably a great fit for him. This is how he wanted to be portrayed and seen in the world. So, when I look at the whole picture

and put it all together, I think that he is a real guy - whacked but real.” – William Fichtner

By Joseph J. Airdo In “The Test,” which will screen in competition as part of the live action shorts program during this year’s Phoenix Film Festival at Harkins Scottsdale 101, Patrick Fischler and his real-life wife Lauren Bowles play a couple whose pregnancy test turns out to be testing a whole lot more than just a pregnancy - including their desires, their future and ultimately their connection. “This couple has had a hard time getting pregnant and you catch them at a mo-

ment that everything is about to change,” Fischler said during a recent interview with AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine. “They are taking a pregnancy test when they have kind of given up on having children. There is only so much you can do. They are at a real precipice.” And although he and Bowles, who wrote the short’s screenplay, are like the characters in the film - a couple, Fischler noted that is where the similarities start and end. They have a beautiful daughter whom they did not have any trouble conceiving whatsoever. However, Fischler acknowl-

edges that sometimes the stress of wanting children prevents one from having them. “It is such a weird feeling,” Fischler said, speaking of stress - albeit the kind associated with the festival circuit. “To be honest with you, I couldn’t sit in my seat the first time seeing it with an audience. I got up and stood in the aisle in the back of the theater to watch the short. I got a little nervous. But it is great to have your movie shown all over the country and have different reactions from people.”

A lot of people who have seen the movie are astounded by the level of production value we were able to deliver on such a small budget.” John: “What’s great about creating a character that’s based around someone who actually existed is you have something to draw from, and I think Paul Boxer is probably the best version of myself! He (the character) does

John T. Woods and Paulie Rojas make a point in DOWN AND DANGEROUS.

‘Down and Dangerous’~ Producer Kevin Shah, writer/director Zac Forsman, and actor John T. Woods share insight on the film. In the film, always one step ahead of the Feds, Paul Boxer (John T. Woods) is the most inventive and principled smuggler in the trade… Kevin, Zac, and John shared with me, this insight. Kevin: “My father was a smuggler in the early 70s and it was a wonderful game rather than a business, and he put the people ahead of the product. Smuggles were designed so that who ever was carrying could walk away free and clear because of the planning.” Zac: “The film was shot over 36 days with about 24 locations, and the movie was written to take advantage of resources that we knew we had available to us. The entire budget was raised through ‘crowd funding’ where we raised $40,000 and were very adamant about stretching our backers’ dol-

everything the way I wish I would do it if I were in those situations. Every actor who came in on the film, were able to draw from their own experiences and bring their own edge to wrap it into the characters that were being presented.” ‘Favor’~ Writer/Director Paul Osborne, and actor Blayne Weaver. The story centers on Kip’s (Blayne Weaver) perfect life and how it’s put in jeopardy when the waitress with whom he’s having a casual fling is accidentally killed in their motel room, and asks his best friend, for a ‘favor’...

Blayne Weaver and Patrick Day up to no good in FAVOR. work it did, for a story with a lot of heart and soul.”

And, it was written for me to really have to act and not play myself!”

Blayne: I love this part of our relationship; Paul and I met on the film festival circuit. I’m a director myself. In 2006 or 2007 we both had films on the festival circuit. We met and became really great friends. It was really cool for Paul to call and say ‘Hey, I have this script, I wrote it for you’ and for me to be able to act for one of my closest friends is an actor’s dream.

The 8-day festival annually screens over 140 films, holds amazing parties, and provides filmmaking seminars all in one convenient location with the parties and workshops being held right on site. The Phoenix Film Festival is held on 7 screens at the Harkins Scottsdale 101, 7000 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85054.

Paul and Blayne share their thoughts on the film. Paul: “I wrote the film for Blayne and Patrick Day, the other lead actor. This year’s Global Gaming Expo, G2E was once more held in Las Vegas in early October. It’s no longer held at the Las Vegas Convention center, but has moved to the nearby Sands Convention center inside the Venetian Hotel - However, much more than the venue has changed from years gone by. The entire philosophy of gaming, especially for video poker (VP) players has shifted into the “new normal”. That’s Entertainment: In the past you could find some good VP plays both in Nevada and local casinos. You’ll still find some good deals but you’ll have to look harder and do your homework. That means use the tables in my book, “The Video Poker Edge” to find games with an ER close to 100%, or even more when you factor in slot club points, comps, promo entries and other perks. Nowadays, however, you’ll have to work harder and they’ll be fewer in number. In fact, you can’t worry about high variance games, like a large progressive royal in 8/5 Jacks or Better (8/5 JOB). That’s because the philosophy of gaming brass is you’re there for entertainment purposes only and if you win in the short run they’ll get you next time. You can’t blame them since our taxing entities, both locally and federally, are reaching deeper into the pockets of the gaming industry with no end in sight. Still, you’ll find some good plays if you’re willing to do the work and to settle for a razor’s edge. Server-Based: Casinos have had the option of changing both games and pay schedules from a remote position off the gaming floor for several years now. The reason it’s just trickling into local casinos is the expense if the gaming floor is not wired for the technology at the time the casino is built. Management realizes that making adjustments during times with peak crowds will bring in much revenue. That’s why you should look at the games along with the pay schedules before depositing money. If you see a difference, say shorted pay tables during weekends or celebratory holidays, like New Year’s Eve, the choose slower times. Right now it’s probably not a problem but it may be in the near future. Good Vibrations: Many VP player switch to slots when there’s seemingly a dark cloud over their heads at video poker. You’ll find some of the newer devices, like Ghost Busters, actually do vibrate when you catch the bonus round. The same kind of psychological endorphins will be found in newer VP devices. Maybe not actual vibrations like the slots, but some comfort zone features. For example, IGT (International Gaming Technology) has had a lock on non-VLT (video lottery

terminals, which may or may not have random number generators and are thankfully not allowed in NJ, Arizona or Nevada) video poker for years. The WMS representatives at this year’s G2E informed me that they are going to make a run for a part of the VP market. They’ll offer the core games (analyzed in my book) that are mostpopular with players, but due to copyright laws, under a slightly different name. In addition, they’ll have some comfort features not offered by IGT. For example, you’ll be able to personalize the color, size, layout and card-art before playing. In fact, you’ll be able to save your settings for the next time you play by entering your own ID number. (You can already enter ID numbers for some games, like Star Trek, so that you can advance to higher level games and retain that status for future games in any casino.) Be aware that the version of the game offered, say JOB, is entirely up to casino management, although they must be within jurisdiction max/min ER requirements. If you are in Vegas and want to try these devices they are exclusively at Station Casinos, but will eventually be found in local casinos.

The New Normal

Kaleidoscope Comps: It’s hard to keep up with the latest trends regarding comps and promos. Lately, I’ve noticed a growing number of VIP rooms in local casinos, a good thing for frequent players. It’s nice to be able to get bottled water and light healthy snacks without having to ask a host for a meal comp; it’s faster for one thing. Stay tuned, however, because this policy could change yet again. Final Thoughts: The new normal is evolving rather than manifesting itself in revolutionary changes, like from coin-droppers to TITO (ticket-in, ticket-out) devices. In the long run technological changes are good for players and knowing about them will make gambling more fun and profitable. Linda Boyd, long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Southern Gaming and Midwest Gaming and Travel. Her book, “The Video Poker Edge” includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” and her You Tube video. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. The 2nd Annual Verde Valley Wine Symposium is being held on April 12th and 13th. This year’s theme: Pioneering a Wine Industry. It’s bigger and better! Brought about by the Verde Valley Wine Consortium, a non-profit trade association that supports the growing wine industry in the Verde Valley, this symposium is intended to be a gathering of folks who love wine and would like to learn more about how to enjoy it. Converging on the Verde Valley (which includes Sedona, Jerome, Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood and Cornville) for a weekend of food, wine and fun, event-goers are sure to be impressed by the gathering of innovators and trailblazers. The event starts on Friday night, April 12th, at the Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa. Hobnob with the symposium weekend presenters and meet the winemakers of the Verde Valley, while dining on a scrumptious meal prepared by award-winning chef from Sedona Rouge’s Reds Restaurant, Ron Moler. Of course, the delicious spread will be accompanied by special local wines. Rounding out the magical evening is flamenco guitar music played by local favorite, Eric Miller.

April 3rd, 2013 - April 9th, 2013

The daylong Symposium starts on Saturday at 9am at Yavapai College, Clarkdale Campus. Throughout the day you’ll hear from prominent guest speakers such as Arizona legislators, Arizona wine pioneers and they’ve even brought in some big guns from out of state! There will be breakout sessions for those who enjoy wine, as well as separate sessions for those who make the stuff. This year they are presenting the first Symposium Wine Competition… each of the participating winemakers are bringing wines to the competition and judging each other’s selections… all being judged blind. Then the Symposium participants will have an opportunity to judge for themselves at the People’s Choice (albeit this won’t be blind). The winemakers will also bring additional wines for the Symposium participants to enjoy. Stick around and make a weekend of it… use your Symposium badge to receive discounts at the Consortium’s member’s tasting rooms on Sunday! Come, drink, learn and have fun! SPRING CLEAN YOUR DIET TO LOOK AND FEEL GOOD FAST Top 5 Delicious Spring Diet Foods to Boost Your Metabolism and Help You Lose Weight

Sauerkraut Turn your spring cabbage into a super diet food by making it into sauerkraut. Sauerkraut helps to reestablish healthy populations of bacteria in the gut. New research suggests that those who are overweight and struggle to lose weight may have unhealthy populations of bacteria in their gut, so adding as many pro-

bacteria foods (like sauerkraut) to your diet is essential to long-term weight loss.Sauerkraut too strong to eat solo? Throw it on a Reuben sandwich.

Sea Bass When it comes to boosting your metabolism, it’s important to include a good amount of protein in your diet. If you are a fan of fish, try eating sea bass. It’s an excellent source of protein, iron, and other minerals.

Grapefruit Studies show that the chemical properties in grapefruit can reduce insulin levels, which promote weight loss and boosts metabolism, plus it’s an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Makes a satisfying spring lunch anytime, anywhere.

Nettles Nettles offer a lot of nutrition for very little calories. Rich in potassium, calcium, vitamins A, B, C and iron, nettles offer appetitesuppressing qualities as they release neurotransmitters serotonin and acetylcholine. They also pos-

sess diuretic properties alleviating water weight, releasing toxins and purifying the blood. Not sure how to eat them? Substitute nettles in recipes that call for spinach (in dips, soups or spinach pie).

Apricots Apricots come into season toward the end of spring in the warmer areas where they grow and offer 60 percent of your daily-recommended dose of vitamin A. They are also a good source of fiber, making them a sweet but satisfying snack.

5 BREAKFAST CREATIONS THE WHOLE FAMILY WILL LOVE Doodled pancakes If your kids are old enough to help at the griddle, they’ll love doodling out their own pancakes -- and if they’re still too young, they can shout out their orders to you, their own personal pancake Picasso. Here’s what you’ll need to do: Prepare your pancake batter, and then pour batter into the squirt top bottles used to dispense condiments like ketchup and mustard. Instead of ladling out the pancake batter, use the bottles to squirt out the pancakes in stripes, letters or even funny faces. The squirt top will help you create smaller and more precise designs -- sort of like a pancake pen.

kids have a favorite breakfast cereal, toss in a little of that too. Mini bagel sandwiches Start their day on a warm and delicious note with mini cheesy egg bagel sandwiches. Get your bagels fresh from the local bakery, and toast them up while you’re scrambling the eggs and cheddar cheese. Butter your toasted bagels and top them with the cheesy eggs. Serve the mini breakfast sandwiches to your happy munchers with a side of berries.

Oatmeal bar If you’re trying to wean your kids off sugary instant oatmeal and get them into whole grain oatmeal-fromscratch goodness, surprise them with an oatmeal bar. Give them a bowl of straight steel cut oatmeal and let them top it up with choices including banana slices, walnuts, fresh fruit jam, peanut butter, agave syrup and honey. Yogurt parfait Presentation is everything. When your kids take one look at their breakfast parfaits all layered up in a sundae glass, they’ll lunge for the spoon to scoop up their healthy breakfast (masquerading as a sweet treat). To make the yogurt parfait, simply layer your favorite yogurt on the bottom, topped with granola, fresh fruit, then another layer of yogurt, granola and fruit. French toast sticks Kids and dipping go together like... well... like French toast and syrup. Take advantage of your wee ones’ natural affinity for food dunking, and serve up some crunchy French toast sticks with individual ramekins of syrup. Use thick slices of bread, and cut each slice into four strips. “I’m supposed to do a couple more episodes. I’m just not sure when we’re going to get to them, because their season is sort of different from ours. It’s just a matter of finding the time, but I can’t wait. I love that show.” – Jennifer Love Hewitt of “The Client List” on Lifetime, about resuming her recurring guest role on TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland”

The menu features four gourmet courses, craft beer parings and dishes made with the brewery’s own farm-raised beef. Ticketholders can expect an array of delicious dishes created by Sierra Nevada’s executive chef Michael Iles. Ben VanderMeer from the brewery will lead the evening, entertaining patrons with beer education, lore and stories about the menu selections and pairings.

BEER JOURNALISM Just as there is an art to brewing great beer, there is an art to writing about great beer. And while many people attempt it, there are only a small handful that truly do a good job with it. Sadly, I am not in that group, but I do know of several people that are and thought it would be fun to talk about them a little bit and give you an opportunity to find something to read about beer that’s better than this. I mean something besides the

back of the bottle. Anyway, here is a look at some of the top beer journalists and writers.

The dean of all beer writers has to be Michael Jackson (not that one, the other one). Jackson is probably the most famous of all beer writers and an inspiration to most current ones. He came to the attention of the beer community back in 1977 when his first book, The World Guide to

Beer, was published. This book has been reprinted several times and translated in to ten different languages. More importantly, this book set the groundwork for the modern theory of Beer Styles. In the World Guide, Jackson categorized beers in to styles commonly used today, based on local traditions and names. Jackson was always very good at putting his beer reviews in context as local culture for each beer was always

a prominent part of his writing. It is this writing that inspired young brewers in many cities throughout the latter part of the twentieth century to create their own local beer cultures. This seminal work, along with President Jimmy Carter’s signing of a small law legalizing homebrewing provided the base for the craft beer explosion we see today.

Michael Jackson went on to be a prolific writer, penning twenty books and providing copious amounts of copy for newspapers and magazines. He also had a show on The Discovery Channel aptly titled The Beer Hunter. Others have tried to usurp this name, but there is only one who can claim the title. What has Jackson said about Arizona? He only made a couple of visits here, but in 1997, he spoke highly of the fledgling McFarlane Brewing located on South 29th Street in Phoenix. McFarlane’s is no longer with us, but a few years ago, Papago Brewing pulled out an eight year old keg of their barley wine and it was still spectacular. The only other thing he had to say about Phoenix beer was not complimentary, but it should be noted that his disparaging comments were made upon tasting the Chili Beer that seems to be all many tourists know about beer in this state. Jackson, who was also a world famous whiskey critic, passed away on August 30th, 2007 at his home in London. He would have celebrated his 71st birthday last week. Fred Eckhardt’s primary beat is the Pacific Northwest, one of the meccas of craft beer. Eckhardt, now 86 years old, was a contemporary of Jackson and remains an active writer, critic and histo-

rian. His reputation for being a bit of a character in his hometown, Portland, has also made him a “beer personality.” He is known as a homebrewer and advocate for craft beer. Most of his articles have appeared in two beer magazines, Celebrator and All About Beer. Eckhardt also authored a must read book titled, The Essentials of Beer Styles, which furthered Jackson’s earlier work and covered new ground in continuing to define the many traditional as well as evolving beer styles in the world. Many people know Eckhardt simply as Fred, which is convenient, because Portland brewery, Hair of the Dog honored him by naming a beer, “Fred.” Fred, the beer, is a big, bold, flavorful product which provides a wonderful drinking experience, and, as further homage to its namesake, ages well. Fred also may be the only beer personality to have his very own beer festival. Fredfest is a small event held in May of each year to commemorate Eckhardt’s birthday. It always features some amazing rare beers and is a great celebration of the life of a true legend in the industry. The picture that accompanies this article shows him with famed publican Don Younger who owned one of the original craft beer bars, The Horse Brass Pub, in Oregon.

Hello again beer lovers, today let’s chat about recent explosion in the craft beer industry here in Arizona. BIG TIME GROWTH! I can remember just three short years ago when the (80 foot) beer wall approximately (700 different beers) I am in charge of at my second place of employment was at many points difficult to keep full of new product.

BEER! SECTION

THE RISING TIDE OF CRAFT BEER

You may recall seeing five to eight different varieties of beer from each available brewery on our shelves often because there weren’t enough craft breweries to fill all the space. Well step up three years and we live in a different world. Thanks to distributors like World Class Beverage, Pitcher of Nectar, Quail, Diamondback and the craft beer team at Hensley, the possibilities are almost limitless. I’m sure many of you attended the Spring Beer Festival at Whole Foods Chandler last weekend. If you tried any of the twenty five new breweries on offer that day I’m you understand where I’m coming from. If not, go toTops Liquor, Gilbert Convenience Mart, Sun Devil Liquor and World of Beer or try Plaza Liquors located in Tucsonand feast your eyes on a plethora of choices. This is no longer a two or three horse race. This is a marathon of amazing variety.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Now having said so, I would be remiss not to mention all of the new local breweries Arizona has to offer. Desert Eagle, North Mountain, OHSO, Borderlands, Dragoon and the soon to be open Wilderness Brewing and Owls Orchard Brewing are all pumping out liquid gold right before our homegrown eyes. If you live here in the Grand Canyon State and love beer, now is a great time to be alive and kicking! Go Now and Google, Grass Hopper….

BEER! SECTION

In previous articles, we have talked about San Francisco as being a premiere beer destination, so of course they have plenty of local bloggers and beer writers. Quite possibly the best of these, and one of the best in the country, is Jay Brooks. Brooks, who was a former corporate buyer for BevMo, maintains an incredibly informative blog titled Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeerbulletin.com). Prior to that, Brooks was the General Manager of the Celebrator Beer News, a national “brewspaper.” He has also been active as a freelance writer regionally, nationally and internationally. The man whom Brooks would consider the top beer writer in the Bay Area was named William Brand, who wrote a regular column in the Oakland Tribune. Brand was tragically killed in an accident in 2008 and Brooks took over the column of his close friend. On the other coast, Philadelphia is a hotbed of great beer, both high end imports and craft. Somehow despite Pennsylvania’s archaic liquor laws, this city has become one of the best beer cities in the country. Right in the middle of this incredible beer scene is Lew Bryson. Bryson is self described as the award-winning, beer-drinking, whiskey-sipping, brewery-visiting, cask-tapping, thirst-creating drinks writer. He certainly fits that bill. He maintains a terrific blog

titled, Seen Through a Glass, has an informative web site (www. lewbryson.com) and has inked several books covering the history of brewing in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. Bryson also writes from time to time for national publications and is one of the first people called when local media needs a “beer perspective”. His latest crusade has him taking on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and attempting to bring them into slightly more modern times, if not abolish them outright. These efforts alone are worth checking out his web site. There are many other truly good beer writers out there, each with his or her own specialty. Each with his or her own perspective on beer. Many of them are regional in scope and write for blogs, local papers, regional magazines and “brewspapers” (there is that word again, isn’t it kind of a neat concept?). To find them, just look for a copy of Celebrator, Ale Street News, Southwest Brewing News, DRAFT Magazine or any of the others you can find online or at the newsstand. If we all continue to drink and discuss great beer, who knows, maybe someday Arizona will even have a decent beer writer to call our own. Until then, you’re stuck with me. Let’s go have a beer.

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard the terms “Tiger Woods” and “favorite” used in the same sentence, but that could be the situation this week at Augusta National as the game’s best golfers get set to tee off in the Masters. Golf’s first major of 2013 airs from Georgia Thursday through Sunday, April 11-14, on ESPN and CBS. After struggling with injuries, personal problems and lackluster play the past three years, the now-37-year-old Woods is back in familiar territory, as of late March ranking No. 2 on the Tour’s money list behind Brandt Snedeker and second in the World Golf Rankings behind Rory McIlroy. He’s had two wins this year, the most recent coming in emphatic fashion last month in the WGC-Cadillac Championship. And he always seems to save his best for Augusta, winning there four times, including once by a tournament-record 12 strokes in 1997. Golfodds.com lists him as a 4-1 favorite to win here this week. But this being a major, he’ll have to do it against stiff competition, including past tournament champions Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel, Angel Cabrera and Mike Weir, plus top-ranked players in Snedeker, McIlroy, Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker.

WHAT’S NEW AT CHASE FIELD IN 2013?

Southern Pride XLR-600 Smoker

“Tape Measure Shot” BBQ Sandwich photos by L.M. Parr/Arizona Diamondbacks

Chase Field, considered by many to be the most fan-friendly and affordable ballpark in the country, has seen a number of additions made in order to enhance the fan experience, including a new restaurant, additional food options and a new gym. Perhaps the most exciting addition this season is Game Seven Grill located in the Gila River Casinos Plaza. Game Seven Grill, created in partnership with Levy Restaurants, takes the place of Sliders, which had previously been in the same location since 2003. The 20,000 square-foot restaurant will feature memorabilia such as game-used jerseys, World Series programs, tickets, game balls and pennants from Game 7 of the 2001 World Series in which the D-backs won the only championship in Phoenix’s major professional sports history. At the heart of Game Seven Grill is a Southern Pride XLR-600 Smoker, with the capacity to serve up to 600 pounds of the restaurant’s signature slow smoked barbecue. The classic “All American” barbeque menu will also include house smoked ribs, beef brisket, chicken, turkey and pork with three distinctly delicious sauce offerings. The menu also includes a variety of unique items, including the “Hottest Wings in Baseball,” made with Ghost Pepper (Bhut Jolokia), a chili pepper recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world. Fans can sign a waiver, dig in and try to become the “King of the Wing” and take home a custom Game Seven Grill fire helmet. New food options include a Double Stack BBQ Burger, Italian Job, and

Turkey Cheesesteak all available along the Insight Diamond Suite Level which is open for everyone in the ballpark to enjoy. The menu has also expanded to include two vegan options with the Pretzel Edamame and an Achiote Basted Mushroom Wrap available for in-seat dining. Perhaps the most unique item to be added to the menu is regional favorite Sonoran Dog available at two Red Hot Grill locations on the Upper Level and Main Concourse. In addition, fans will be able to get a beverage and salty snacks on the go at the new Pepsi Grab-N-Go location on the main concourse that features items such as AMP Energy, SoBe Lifewater, SoBe Energize, Lipton products and Frito-Lay products that are only sold at this location. Also new this year is a Jack Daniel’s portable bar where fans can enjoy an ice cold beverage and watch the game from an expanded viewing area. Fans are encouraged to come to the ballpark early on any of the seven Street Festival days (Apr. 13, Apr. 27, May 11, May 27, Sept. 14 and Sept. 29) throughout the season that will kick off on Opening Day at 3 p.m. The Street Festivals are located at Fourth Street and Jackson and will feature live music, D-backs inflatables and various food trucks. Inside Chase Field, the D-backs have upgraded their sound system throughout the park to ensure the best quality for fans’ listening pleasure. The Team Shop will also sell new headwear as part of the 2013 MLB Diamond Era 59Fifty collection from New Era that features light weight and breathable materials that include UPF 50+ sun protection.

, ROBBY GORDON OFF-ROAD S STADIUM SUPER TRUCK SERIES April 5th – 6th at University of Phoenix Stadium Robby Gordon OFF-ROAD™ Stadium SUPER Trucks™ on NBC will make its debut April 5-6 at University of Phoenix Stadium – home of the NFL Arizona Cardinals. A total of 12 races will be run in 2013 and ALL will be televised on NBC (7 on main NBC network, and 5 on cable’s NBC Sports Network). RGSST will race in the biggest and best-known mega stadiums in the U.S. For more than 20 years, off-road racing champion/legend (and winning IndyCar, NASCAR driver) Robby Gordon has meticulously planned and designed his own vision of what he knew drivers and race fans would like to see, and needed to experience in the return of off-road racing in stadiums. He sought a superior racing platform, unprecedented affordability for teams, efficient delivery of an entertainment product to mass audiences, real world affordability and value for ticket-holding fans, premier stadium venues, a clean family event, and the perfect allaround entertainment product in bringing back this immensely popular sport. Gordon has developed an infinitely improved version of door-to-door, dirt slinging, berm/gap jumping, driving sideways racing that routinely sold out stadiums in the 1980s. Gordon’s RGSST Series has assembled a team of experts that carefully reviewed all the great, good, and not-so-good aspects of the former Thompson

race series. The idea was to recreate everything that was great, invent more greatness, improve on the good, and remove the not-so-good. This has resulted in a perfected course design, including full-scale test tracks in North Carolina, and 40 identically prepared Stadium SUPER Trucks™ designed, built, owned, maintained, and transported by the Series. Stadium truck racing is born out of desert off-road racing. Its immense popularity was spawned by racing DNA brought by legends Al and Bobby Unser, Rick and Roger Mears, Walker Evans, Ivan Stewart, Rob MacCachren, Larry Ragland, and Bob and Robby Gordon – just to name a few. From its first days of the premier trophy trucks screaming by saguaro cacti and jumping mesquite thicketed dry washes in the Baja 1000, the popularity of desert off-road racing quickly became part of the motorsports culture landscape of the west and southwest – and migrated to all corners of the U.S. Some of the nation’s best and well-known drivers will be participating in 12 SST two-day events at the greatest stadium venues in the world. Four divisions will race. (1) Stadium SUPER Trucks (the headline division); (2) BIGFOOT Division – at least eight; (3) Stadium Buggy Division; and Utility Terrain Vehicle Division. Drivers expected to participate include the legendary Ricky Johnson, Arie Luyendyk Jr., J.J. Yeley, Jesse Johnson (NASCAR

actually brings no significant crew personnel. Just a driver, his or her fire suit, helmet, and maybe a tech advisor or crew chief - if they so desire. Drivers will perform a blind draw of race vehicle assignment prior to practice and qualifying on Friday. The big show is on Saturday.

HOW IT WORKS

Body panels displaying the drivers’ Primary Sponsor then are quickly snapped onto the vehicle drawn.

Driver/team will pay to the Series a franchise fee for the right to compete for the season. In return, the Series will provide a race vehicle for the season, fully maintained and race ready at each event. The driver is not allowed to possess the vehicle between events. Once the franchise fee is paid to the Series, the franchisee/ driver/team will have the right not only to compete, but also to sell sponsorship on the vehicle. Repucom (a global leader in sports marketing research) has valued primary sponsorship at between $1.2 million and $1.8 million per season. The franchisee/team keeps all sponsorship dollars raised. As for the race events, the team

are on Saturday evenings. National Anthem plays at 6:50 p.m. with the first heat races starting at 7 p.m. All four divisions will race throughout the evening. A series of brief qualifying races will determine the Main Feature Finals participants. Most races will be between 12 and 20 laps

to ensure competitiveness and excitement. The event is designed to wrap by 10:30 p.m. Races will be tape-delay broadcast on NBC either the next day, or the following week – all airing on Sundays during prime time viewing – usually right after the NASCAR race has ended.

To make this a pure driver’s sport, the driver and crew chief cannot electronically communicate during the race, and no major adjustments can be made to race vehicles other than tire pressure, ride height, wheel camber & toe, suspension spring rates, and making slight tuning adjustments on shock absorbers.

DJ Chuckie at EPIQ Nightclub The Netherlands is home to Amsterdam—one of the top party destinations in Europe. Sophisticated people go to Amsterdam for beautiful canals and Rembrandt. Everyone else seems to love the cafes. The “coffee” must be really good there; so good that it causes disc jockeys to pump out electro beats that have the world’s young adult population vibrating and fist pumping before them in awe and exultation. Obviously, the nightlife scene is huge with massive clubs that birth superstars like Tiesto, Afrojack, and Armin van Buuren—just to name a few. The Dutch do it dirty and thanks to DJ Chuckie, Dirty Dutch is now a known subgenre of EDM. Chuckie moved to The Netherlands from former Dutch colony, Suriname (yeah, I’ve never heard of it either), and hit global superstardom with his hit, Let

the Bass Kick. This Wednesday, Chuckie and the lingerie-clad girls of Hollywood’s AV Nightclub will grace the platforms of Scottsdale’s Epiq. Now, most people remember Epiq as PCL. Honestly, not much has changed including its interior. With its mirrored walls and ceiling, expect more than just vanity, expect a lightshow unrivaled in the entertainment district. We’re talking beams of neon brilliance bouncing into infinity, illuminating a sea of dancers who share one mission: to enjoy a legendary evening. Scottsdale may not have the mysteries of Amsterdam’s red light district, cafes, or beer factories, but it does get its DJs every once in a while. And when one comes, we party soundly, notoriously, and most definitely epically. Wednesday, April 3rd. 9 pm – 2 am. 4426 N Saddlebag. RSVP: VIP@ EpiqClub.com. Ages 21+

Socialite Fridays Featuring Nathan Scott at Gypsy Bar Guess what guys… Phoenix has an upscale nightlife scene, too. If you’re from the valley you know that bringing in downtown’s CityScape a couple of years ago was a big deal. “It you build it, they will come,” was probably the mindset to those who brought in the deluxe bowling alley, blues bar, and comedy club to the once, not-so-hip Arizona capital city. And now the very same builders of Lucky Strike have firmly established ultra lounge, Gypsy Bar. Not just a lounge, Gypsy Bar is uniquely entertaining allowing patrons to break away from the dancing and bar areas and amble amongst the arcade gaming lounge apart from the bumping, grinding, and shot taking. Of course, you can still sip your martini as you play air

hockey—this place is strictly for adults, after all. Unlike the grimy arcades of yesteryear, Gypsy Bar is chic and embellished to match even our favorite Scottsdale clubs. They can also bring in outstanding DJs like Chicagoan, Nathan Scott. Not only is Scott a resident DJ on XM BPM (rated number one dance station in the US), he is also a resident DJ at Chicago clubs, Crobar and MODA; Crobar being one of Maxim Magazine’s top ten clubs in the country. Sexy and sexier that he’s also the resident DJ at Vegas’ Wet Republic pool party every Sunday at the MGM. See him this Socialite Friday in the bestnamed city in America. Friday, April 5th. 9:30 pm – 2 am. 50 W Jefferson St. FREE with RSVP: GypsybarVIP@ gmail.com. Ages 21+

ROBERT EARL KEEN LIVE AT CRESCENT BALLROOM “Texas’ ranking nice guy poet” according to Rolling Stone, and “The Greatest Show That’s Ever Been Gave” is coming to Phoenix, AZ! Known for the wit of his songwriting pen and for vivid, memorable story songs and high-powered live performances, the Texas Heritage Hall of Fame Singer/Songwriter, Americana Legend and Texas “music hero” will be performing at The Crescent Ballroom on June 18, 2013. Music lovers will be treated to what Keen does best – writing and performing – with a prime opportunity to enjoy his lyrics and satire, hear some amusing stories, and enjoy the sounds of REK and his band of talented musicians. The critically acclaimed Ready For Confetti is Keen’s latest #1 Americana album (award-winning author Stephen King picked the album as one of his Top Albums of 2011 in Entertainment Weekly!) The critically acclaimed record produced by Lloyd Maines and released by Lost Highway is the follow-up to 2009’s The Rose Hotel, which also hit #1 on the Americana album chart ranked #6 on The Americana Music Association Top 100

Albums list of 2010. The new single from Keen’s Ready For Confetti, “I Gotta Go,” is receiving rave reviews: TASTE OF COUNTRY: 4 of 5 stars: “Robert Earl Keen’s new song gets your feet shaking and head bopping from the first strum of that funky little guitar riff that drives ‘I Gotta Go’ home…This alt-country master makes songwriting seem so easy…‘I Gotta Go’ is sure to become another quick fan favorite for this altcountry superhero.” LOST HIGHWAY: “With its clapping and tap-dancing rhythms, ‘I Gotta Go,’ one of the album’s crown jewels, captures the rush that we all feel, even if our own lives bear little resemblance to the story line.” ROUGHSTOCK.COM: “‘Keen manages a perfect blend of forced detachment and underlying weary pain as he sings, ‘born one morning on the day of the dead, in a bombed out bungalow, my mama kissed my cheek and said I gotta go.’”

ALBUM REVIEWS The Milk Carton Kids’ The Ash & Clay is Great, Josh Rouse’s The Happiness Waltz Shines Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale’s latest release is beautiful folk music, despite its often sad tone. “Snake Eyes” features a mournful nod to the lyrics of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” and despite the upbeat sound of “Heaven” when the duo sings “They promised me heaven / I was hoping for something more,” it’s hard not to feel their disappointment too. The same goes for the closer, “Memphis,” which talks about the emptiness of Graceland despite the joy it is intended to bring. The duo harmonizes well throughout and performs with considerable skill and grace. The Ash & Clay is a winning release because it makes simple music powerful without resorting to making it simplistic or generic. This is a great record.

Josh Rouse fills The Happiness Waltz with considerable folk-pop charm, warm, ’70s-era recordings, and rich, easy-going vocals. The languid folk-pop of “It’s Good to Have You” features Rouse crooning about how glad he is to have someone special in his life, the down-tempo shuffler “Our Love” examines a love that has aged well, and the up-tempo acoustic ditty “Start a Family”’s idealism and straightforwardness are both catchy and undeniable. The Happiness Waltz plumbs the depths of love and life with surprising insight and delicacy and Rouse demonstrates yet again why he has had such a lengthy career. His ability to make the sad beautiful in the touching title track is proof of his lyrical mastery. The Happiness Waltz is a record you will not soon forget.

THE HEART’S DELIGHT: LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE

Over Sixty Voices Join Together for Uplifting Concerts May 4th and 5th

The Sonoran Desert Chorale closes its 19th Season, Images in Song, with beautiful songs and texts, universal in their depiction of longing, tenderness, commitment, and loves remembered. From the familiar strains of O Danny Boy andO, My Luve’s Like a Red, Red Rose to the contemporary sound of the Beatles and Andrew Lloyd Webber, these songs touch everyone. Love changes everything: hands and faces, earth and sky Love changes everything: how you live and how you die. The scope of the program reaches far and wide, including the sly cleverness in the story of an American colonial soldier and an eager young maid to the comforting lyrics and soaring

melody of Paul Simon’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. Love in war and peace, love unrequited, lovers lost and found, love remembered - the breadth and depth of human connections. The Chorale performs these memorable songs which speak to us now and again in so many ways. From sweet music and beautiful poetry, folk songs and tales of old, to new viewpoints on ageless stories, the Chorale’s voices blend to share them all. Performances of The Heart’s Delight will take place May 4, 2013 at 7:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, 15 E. First Avenue, Mesa and May 5, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. at Valley Presbyterian Church, 6947 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley. Tickets are $15 for adults/$12 for seniors, children and groups of 10 or more. Tickets may be purchased online at www.SonoranDesertChorale. org or by calling480-305-4538.

AN EVENING WITH MICHAEL BOLTON Tickets On Sale Monday, April 8th Spend an unforgettable evening with multiple Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum selling music artist Michael Bolton at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13th at the intimate Celebrity Theatre. After four decades in the music industry, Michael Bolton has become one the most successful musicians of our time. The 2-time Grammy Award winner is famous for such soulful ballads as “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” “When I’m Back on My Feet Again” and “To Love Somebody.” He has sold 53 million albums and singles worldwide, and scored eight top ten albums. A diverse and prolific songwriter, Bolton’s songs have been recorded and performed by over 100 artists, ranging from country western legend Conway Twitty to English blues rocker Joe Cocker, and he is one of the few artists who have co-written with the legendary Bob Dylan. Bolton, now 60, is on tour in support of his newest album, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – A Tribute To Hitsville U.S.A. While recording the tracks,

Bolton visited Hitsville Studio in Detroit -- the city where songs including “Reach Out (I’ll Be There),” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” and the title track of his album were born. Fans can expect the blue-eyed soul singer to pepper some of these songs into his live play list. Bolton’s notoriety has gone beyond the realm of music. The former People Magazine “Sexiest Man Alive” appeared on Season 11 of TV’s Dancing with the Stars, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and scored points with a new fan base by singing on the hip-hop parody “Jack Sparrow,” which first appeared on Saturday Night Live . Tickets ($45 and $60) go on sale at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 8th at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-2671600 ext. 1.
