We all have them, those thoughts in the back of our mind constantly bothering us. The thought that says, “I’m not good enough.” Sometimes these thoughts are about looks, sometimes they’re about money, they could be about anything! Really it all just depends on the person. They’re called insecurities and whether you’re a man or a woman chances are you have a few of your own whether you want to admit it or not. The funny thing about insecurities is there isn’t much you can do to quick fix them. In fact, when you try to research “How to Fix my Insecurities” usually what you will find is simple answers like “work out if you feel fat - get surgery if you think your body parts are too small – get a better job if you think you don’t make enough” but the more common answer that many people are dancing around is “Get Over It.” Well, I say, easier said than done. Sure, as a woman I could work out until the cows come home. I could even get to my goal weight and feel I am in the best shape of my life. In reality though, all it takes is a beautiful woman to enter the room and suddenly I wonder if I really am good enough or if my boyfriend is looking at her instead. Before I know it, I’ve become moody and distant with my boyfriend about something that isn’t even his fault! The insecurity never went away.
Men – if you feel insecure about having your girl be taller than you when you are out together. Tell her. It’s embarrassing but she’ll appreciate you opening up. Plus, now she knows to be aware of your insecurity and can work to help you make you feel better. The second step is to help your partner. Women -You both are a team, and rather than tell your man “get over it” when he tells you he wants to be tall, you should be working to help him. For instance, you could wear flats when you go out together. Don’t panic ladies! I’m not saying forever, just a small gesture to show him you care about his feelings. You would expect the same from him after all. The third step is to be understanding. Men – Being shorter than your woman is something that can’t be changed. While your lady can work hard to make you feel more secure, you have to meet her in the middle. When you’re feeling insecure try to make sure you’re not becoming irritated or disgruntled to her or people around you. Try reminding yourself to be confident, and thanks to your partner, you have nothing to worry about. The final step is to keep the communication open.
However, my advice when it comes to relationships is to not let your insecurities pull you apart from your significant other. You two could be together for years and you should learn to deal with your insecurities as a couple. So here are a few steps to work together and avoid those misunderstandings that lead to useless fights.
Men and women – Obviously the insecurity never really goes away, but with time it should become more easily controlled. A man worried about the woman he’s dating being taller than him is just an example. With any insecurity, whether you are a man or woman you can cope as long as you are open and talk about your concerns. Of course, this is always easier said than done. But as long as you really trust the person you’re with I can guarantee a solution can be found that you both can live with.
The first step is to open up to each other.

However some meteors may be visible beginning on April 16. Lyrids tend to be bright, often leaving trails and tend to peak at about 10-20 meteors per hour. LARRY FITZGERALD’S CELEBRITY SOFTBALL GAME BACK FOR THE 3RD YEAR TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL & NATIONAL CHARITIES The Larry Fitzgerald Double Play Celebrity Softball Game & VIP After-Party is back for its third year to raise money for the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund. The softball game will include participation from current and former NFL and NBA players, other pro sports athletes as well as a host of Larry’s celebrity friends, all making plays for the cause! The game will once again be held at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, spring training home of the Dbacks and the Colorado Rockies. ‘It’s a Disaster’ ‘Disconnect’ Alexander Skarsgard, Paula Patton, Michael Nyqvust, Jonah Bobo, Hope Davis and Jason Bateman play people who are searching for connections in today’s wired world and, in doing so, discover the destructive potential of the Internet. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 115 minutes) Stan: Admittedly this reviewer is very fond of the ‘Anthology’ style of story telling from the literary medium being applied to films which was brought to the forefront in recent years by directors Steven Soderbergh with ‘Traffic’ (2000) and Paul Haggis with ‘Crash’ (2004) because the viewer is constantly pushed to keep up as vital story elements are revealed as the story heads to the ‘inevitable intersecting conclusion’. Director Henry Alex Rubin effectively anchors his story with our involvement in the technologies of cell phones, the internet, and social networks as the principal characters stories move to the inevitable intersecting conclusion, while as a viewer, I was reminded of my own heavy and quite subconscious involvement with all of these technologies on a daily bases. (Grade: A-)
A couple’s brunch takes a sudden, catastrophic turn when the city falls victim to a mysterious attack. Trapped in the house and unsure of their fates, eight seemingly normal people become increasingly unhinged. Stars include David Cross, Julia Stiles, Erinn Hayes and America Ferrera. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 88 minutes) Joseph: If you have ever been to a party - or even more apropos, hosted one - that you believe could not have been a bigger disaster, writer/director Todd Berger has a surprise in store for you: It could have been much, much worse. Therein lies the conceit of “It’s a Disaster,” a black comedy that is wickedly written, aptly acted and energetically executed. An eccentric ensemble cast of characters coupled with a furiously fast pace in which tension is increasingly tightened within a claustrophobically confined space where window cracking is not an option makes for one darkly funny fireworks display. (Grade: B)

‘Welcome to the Punch’ Mark Strong plays an ex-criminal who is forced to return to London when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives his nemesis - a detective (James McAvoy) - one last chance to catch the man he’s always been after. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR - 99 minutes) Joseph: “Welcome to the Punch” is a classic case of style over substance. On the one hand, writer/ director Eran Creevy’s new crime thriller certainly looks slick - especially during its action sequences (at least when you can see them as it is a fairly low-lit flick). On the other hand, it has a cookie-cutterlike conventionality that seems to be relying on clichés rather than breaking free from them. It is an extremely empty experience whose sole takeaway is the banausic blast of bullets that results from one generic gunfight after another. Even the usually talented cast appears to be bored. (Grade: D)

If 2013 was any indication of what is in store; audiences are in for a treat. The following were my favorite films and respective release information. I wanted to set it in one location and shoot it with my friends on the weekends. So, I read this article about how ‘Night of the Living Dead’ is public domain because they forgot to renew the copyright. I thought it would be really funny to take all of the zombie footage from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ and shoot a bunch of new footage. “I wanted to make a whole new movie about couples getting together for game night in 1968 when there is a zombie attack. I wanted to make it look old and black and white but then I thought how hard it would be to fake old 16mm film footage. So I abandoned that idea but I still liked the concept of having a bunch of couples get together and then something horrible hap-

pens outside so they are forced to stay inside and deal with it in a comedic fashion. “I was born and raised in New Orleans. We have a very laissez-faire attitude about a lot of things. Our city gets hit with hurricanes but also has Mardi Gras. We know how to deal with destruction once a year but we also know how to party once a year. I think that is why I have this very existential attitude and think of all things - even very dark subject matter - as comedic. I mean, my whole family was in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and there are still able to make jokes about it. You have got a laugh sometimes to keep from crying. So, no, it doesn’t keep me up at night. In fact, it helps me sleep more soundly. I think more people should have that approach to life.” – Todd Berger

From time to time we enter the discussion about whether or not beer has any real health benefits. When we do, we always do our best to be able to cite legitimate publications and research that tout the advantages of moderate drinking. In case you missed the key word…it is MODERATE. Anyway, it seems like the holiday season is a pretty good time to discuss that further – and we discovered that a tiny microbrewery and distillery in Pretoria, South Africa had put together a pretty good list. So let’s take a look at this list and maybe you can use something off of it the next time you want to slip out for a couple of beers.

1. Drinking beer is good for your liver! Drinkers of beer can get rid of poisonous heavy metals like lead and copper up to five times more effectively than tee-totalers. Alcohol causes the small blood vessels in the liver to expand which speeds up metabolism. (Beer Net Publication, April 2001 Biological Institute, University of Charkov, Prof.
2. It lowers your risk of heart attacks. Those drinking beer on a daily basis, averaging 4-9 liters (editor’s note: A liter of beer is about 33.8 ounces, so 4-9 liters is 1.5 to 3 beers per day)- of beer per week, have the lowest rate of heart attacks. Their risk is approximately 50% lower when compared to non-drinkers. (Bobak et al 2000; Hoffmeister et al 1999; Kitamura et al 1998). 3. It prevents cholesterol from oxidizing. Hop compounds xanthohumol and quercetin, both strong antioxidants are very effective in their ability to
prevent LDL (the bad form of cholesterol) from oxidation. When LDL is oxidized it will be laid down on the artery wall causing them to narrow, thus increasing the chances of blockage and heart attacks (Miranda et al 2000). Antioxidants are thought to be able to quench and inactivate the free radicals, which may cause the types of cellular damage that can lead to both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. 4. It boosts your antioxidant levels. Recent studies have turned its attention to the anti-oxidative role of plant polyphenols in general, their beneficial influence on various aspects of health and in particular, their role in dealing with dangerous free radicals within the body. Analysis can show how much of these good compounds are in beer- but can it be absorbed (called bioavailability) by humans and hence have a positive effect on health? Yes! The malt-derived antioxidant ferulic acid is 100% absorbed by humans (compared to 11-25% absorption of ferulic acid from a tomato). The total level of antioxidants in the blood increased significantly after just a single glass of ale, again proving that antioxidants in beer are well absorbed (Ghiselli et al 2000) Not that any person in his right mind would settle for just a single glass! 5. It boosts vitamin B6; B12; folate and mineral levels. If compared to wine and spirits, beer is the only beverage that contains significant levels of vitamins. High homocysteine (Hcy) levels in the blood are associated with increased risk of CVD. Vitamins like B6; B12 and especially folate (all naturally occurring in beer) are now recommended as part of doctors’ orders to be taken daily

to control elevated levels of Hcy (Walker, BRI, 2001). The minerals in beer come from both the malt and the brewing liquor. The beneficial ratio of potassium to sodium is particularly important in relation to cardiovascular disease. 6. Keeps homocysteine (Hcy) levels low. Van der Gaag and his colleagues found that drinking wine and spirits increased serum Hcy levels, whereas, counteracted by folates and vitamin B6, beer consumption had no influence. A clear case of beer should be first for thirst! 7. Drinking beer boosts your soluble fiber intake and lowers cholesterol. One of the most effective forms of soluble fibre for lowering cholesterol is betaglucan, which is the predominant form of fiber in beer. Beers with high malt content like craft beers may provide up to 30% of the recommended daily fiber intake (Gromes et al 2000). 8. Drinking beer help in combating cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other immune system attacking diseases. Hops contain compounds that are unique and rare in nature –like prenyl flavonoids (8PN) which are phytoestrogens that are natural plant based compounds, which mimics the natural estrogens in the body (Bingham et al 1998). The highest 8PN levels in beers have been found in dark and bitter ales and stouts and from craft breweries where whole hopping is practiced. 9. Beer ensures healthy bones. Beer has a nutritional benefit that promotes healthy bones and

Remembering Dave Conz
By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today please allow me to bend your ear for a moment to speak about a very good man and a great friend of Arizona beer. His name is Dr. David Conz and sadly he passed away this last Sunday. Dave, as his friends knew him held a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies at ASU and more importantly to us, as Assistant Research Professor there taught classes and lectured on the history and production of beer. He was also a great participator in our local home brewers club, the Arizona Society of Home Brewers where he served as Educational Chair in 2012. Those were the words I would use to describe Dave, however as single minded as I appear to be he was not. In addition to his role as beer teacher, David held a degree in Aerospace Studies and was a fully licensed commercial pilot. He also held his Ph.D. in Sociology and Technology studies and even a certification for motorcycle repair. He was an avid believer in our planet and made bio-diesel fuel from spent cooking oilsand even raised two chickens that would provide him with eggs for breakfast. Amazing when you realize that he has also backpacked through Europe, was an accomplished ball room dancer and lectured ASU students on modern Nano technology.A true Renaissance man and the kind of multi-faceted person one rarely encounters in today’s modern world of one hit wonders and asymmetrical ethos.

We may not know the beers of Drayman’s, but we like the way they think. Lots of big words, but the gist of it is…there are health benefits to drinking beer in moderation. For three straight weeks the Arizona Rattlers (3-1) handed their opponent its first loss of the season but they were unable to make it four in a row as they fell to the Spokane Shock (4-0) 66-49 in a tough West Division battle at Veteran’s Arena on Friday, April 12. The Rattlers will be home on Saturday, April 20 at 6pm to take on the San Antonio Talons (1-2)

who picked up their first win of the season against the Tampa Bay Storm last week. It will be Faith and Family Night at the Arena. Jon Cain will be performing outside the US Airways Center starting 3:30pm and the Phoenix Boys Choir will sing the National Anthem. Come out and enjoy a great night with your family and the Rattlers!
Chase Utley came into this season a man on a mission, determined to return from chronic knee injuries that cost him at least 40 games each of the past three seasons, compromised his hitting and mobility, and were in part a reason why the Phillies won only 81 games last year. The five-time All-Star second baseman basically had no offseason, spending this past winter rehabbing at the University of San Francisco, where he did stretching and strength training for his legs along with daily batting practice and ground ball drills. There were few days off, a concession Utley recognizes he’ll have to make if he wants to keep his now-34-year-old body on the field. The result is an Utley who feels better than in any of the past two springs and one who this year played in his first Opening Day since 2010. He certainly looked fit in the April 1 season opener at Atlanta, when he went three for five with a triple, a home run and three RBIs in the Phils’ 7-5 loss to the Braves.

Leaving the Nest: A Farewell from your Night Owl When the sleepy sun lays slowly down to rest beyond our western skies, banners of violet, indigo and scarlet rise up to bid our star goodnight. Those who celebrate the night look unto those twilight hues as if they were fireworks signaling the start of an unknown but promised adventure, mysterious as the black infinity above. Desert night owls take flight to their surrounding territories; from Scottsdale to Tempe to Phoenix they glide from one pleasing place to the next, searching for legend, love, and dancing glory. Sharing my experiences with you has been glorious, however, all things must come to an end. I must say farewell as your AZ Weekly Night Owl for other duties call and foreign lands are beckoning me to visit for extended periods of time. This is my last article and I would like to leave you with my best recommendations.

Scottsdale is the valley’s entertainment queen. You know this. Go to Scottsdale to feel fancy and to find the most beautiful crowds in the country. Axis Radius is the entertainment district’s lord. Although it’s had its “ghetto” periods, it’s back on top thanks to its Republic dance nights and electronic dance music. Every bar or club you’ll find in Scottsdale will be playing EDM so choose wisely and pick the best sound systems. Although Wild Knight has steep cover charges and pricey drinks, they bring the best DJs. Expect a Vegas atmosphere and order “value drinks” i.e. long islands and Tokyo teas to avoid looking at your bank account with regret the next morning. If you don’t want to pay a cover, go to Smashboxx—I’ve literally never had a mediocre time there. Phoenix is on the rise when it comes to nightlife and it is beautiful and artsy. It’s also filled with hipsters so you won’t necessarily have to feel the pressure of getting dressed up. Monarch and Bar Smith will make you feel like you’re actually in an established city with their two-stories and multiple dance floors. Go to a show at the Crescent if you haven’t already then stay after, chill on the patio, and make new friends. If dancing isn’t your thing, Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub will welcome you home with their authenticity. Bars, clubs, and lounges aren’t the only places to find fun after dusk. Show pride and support in Arizona’s art scene—it’s one of the best in the country— by attending a RAW: Natural Born Artists event or city art walk. Witness the avant-garde and add diversity to your nighttime ventures. Over the past two years, I have flown with my fellow night owls from lounge to club to special event and back again all because of my love of nighttime revelry. I have partied in the massive discotheques of Rome and have gotten lost amongst the seas of pulsing black hair found in Tokyo clubs. I know how to party. For me, one of the best joys in life is being able to fully embrace the larger than life energy that can only be found on a crowded dance floor. I believe one of the most delicious morsels of nirvana exists there and you don’t have to go to Amsterdam to taste it. ALBUM REVIEWS Andy Hunter’s Awesome Glowing Collision, Mimi Page Delivers Supremely Chilled Requiem UK EDM artist Andy Hunter’s latest trick is , which features seven remixes of tracks from his last two albums, and . “Hold On”’s pulse-pounding beats get sent into overdrive here, as the ethereal sounds and keys turn this into an intergalactic rave, and while the original version of “Glow” is more on the pop side of dance, this remix is heavy on the house aesthetics, making it one hell of a good time. “Collide” turns into a disco-funk party track, “On Automatic”’s pop-and-lock breakbeats are smoothed out on the album’s most straightforward dance number and “Spiral (ft. Beth Bullock)” gets two treatments, the first being a classic trance joint in the vein of BT, while the second is an awesome downtempo number. If you haven’t experienced Hunter’s music, this is a fantastic way to get acquainted.
Mimi Page can do it all—gorgeous vocals, bone-deep lyrics and songs whose genres encompass everything from darktronica to piano ballads—and is the latest example of why her star is rising. The title track’s moody synth line and Page’s ethereal vocals echoing in the background makes for spine-tingling stuff, while “Secunda”’s swelling, otherworldly vocals and melodic strains are fitting since the song refers to a moon in an entry in the video game series. “Treading The Abyss” matches Page’s stratospheric calls to a hypnotic dance beat, and her chilling, down-tempo update of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” demonstrates just how euphoria-inducing her vocals are.
