‘Blancanieves’
‘Lore’
‘Renoir’
Maribel Verdú plays a young woman who learns the art of her father - a famous bullfighter - but is hated by her evil stepmother (Ángela Molina) so she ran away with a troupe of dwarves and becomes a legend. (PG-13 - 105 minutes)
Saskia Rosendahl plays a young woman who, as the Allies sweep across Germany, leads her siblings on a journey that exposes them to the truth of their parents’ beliefs while an encounter with a mysterious refugee forces her to rely on a person she has always been taught to hate. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR - 109 minutes)
Vincent Rottiers plays a young man - the son of Impressionist painter PierreAuguste Renoir (Michel Bouquet) - who returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is a young woman (Christa Theret) who rejuvenates, enchants and inspires both father and son. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 111 minutes)
Joseph: “Blancanieves” is a celebration of cinema, Spanish culture and the fairy tales that shaped not only our childhood but also the fine art of storytelling in general. Writer/director Pablo Berger’s new silent film recounts the classic Brothers Grimm fable of “Snow White” in a way that will keep you enthralled, enchanted and entranced. It is bold, it is beautiful and it is a bona fide masterpiece of a motion picture that will take your breath away by demonstrating that all an auteur needs in order to deeply move an audience is a time-honored tale, a fertile imagination and a majestic musical score.
Stan: With the setting of Germany 1945, a year before my own birth and in the US, ‘Lore’ reminds me of the courage and the will to survive dire conditions with the use of one of our basic human instincts, trust. Saskia Rosendahl in the title role excels as the full extent of her plight is seen and felt in a look or body language with the skill of a seasoned veteran actor. Writer/director Cate Shortland presents a visually moving story of love, fortitude, survival, and the human spirit of caring.
AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Joseph: It is strange that such a cinematically picturesque movie about a renowned painter of all people would be as shamelessly shallow as “Renoir.” If that is not irony, then nothing is, as writer/ director Gilles Bourdos’s new French-language drama goes absolutely nowhere and does so at such a tranquil pace that you may very well become hypnotized by its gorgeous cinematography and fall fast asleep. Fortunately, if you do, you will not have missed much as its beauty is only skin-deep. Bourdos fails to make any insightful observations while the film itself is as emotionally flat as canvas.
SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT ‘Vampire’ Kevin Zegers plays a vampire who, while working as a teacher, searches for suicidal female students and seduces them prior to sucking their blood. Playing exclusively at UltraStar Scottsdale Pavilion. (R - 120 minutes) Stan: This latest presentation on the 18th century European based theme made popular by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel ‘Dracula’, receives a modern contemporary retelling by writer/director Shunji Iwai. Very subtle in his approach, this film presents an even more dominant central character (Kevin Zegers) that perfectly blends in with our modern times, adding a chilling edge to the ages old folklore, and the thought of ‘are there vampires among us’ as the hairs on the nape of my neck stand on end.

In ‘Alien’ (1979) Director Ridley Scott borrowed the blue laser lighting from the band ‘The Who’, who were rehearsing their stage show in the soundstage next door.

of confusing. What starts out as a charming and almost fairytale-like story about unfair working class contraventions takes a tonal turn in the third act and suggests that two wrongs may actually make a right after all.
The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.
‘The Angels’ Share’ Paul Brannigan plays a new dad who, narrowly avoiding jail, vows to turn over a new leaf. A visit to a whiskey distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR - 96 minutes) Stan: Presenting a duality in story telling style, Director Ken Loach presents a heart warming story of redemption and finding one’s way, and the educational aspects relating to an ages old ‘drink’, left this reviewer with the thought that, although whiskey may be the sure downfall of some, it can certainly be the saving factor for others. And, the details of the care, nurturing, and maturation process for a common drink, are just as revealing as the central theme of ‘The Angels’ Share’. Joseph: Although it really refers to the 2 percent of alcohol that disappears into thin air each year during the Scotch whisky maturation process, it is almost ironic that “The Angels’ Share” title suggests something spiritual. Director Ken Loach’s new Scottish dramedy, which was written by his “The Wind that Shakes the Barley” collaborator Paul Laverty, has a social conscience that is kind
Screenwriter Paul Laverty (‘The Angels’ Share’) By Joseph J. Airdo rible childhood that he had. “What really struck me is that there is this terrible crisis that is not only happening in Scotland. There is a big crisis in Greece and Portugal and Ireland and Italy. I spent 12 years in Madrid and 60 percent of people under 25 years old there do not work. These are people who have graduated are well educated yet simply cannot find work. So when you go to communities like this with a much tougher background - with people who have not had a proper education and come from broken families - many of them will not have meaningful work. “Our central character is played by Paul Brannigan, a young man who had actually just been recently released from prison himself. He is in a real crisis in his life. He comes from a very marginalized community where there is a great deal of unemployment. He finds out that he is going to be a father for the first time. This child is born and he really has to find work so that he can build a new life for his family. He is determined that this child not has the same ter-

“And it is a real existential crisis for them, for the communities in which they live and for society in general. It is a total eyeopener. Like these people, our central character wants something very simple. He wants a proper job - not a silly government dream scheme that is too often inflicted upon the poor, but a proper job where he will learn an apprenticeship so he can have some autonomy in his life.” – Paul Laverty

BEER!
The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”
BEER MYTHS MYTH #1: Draft beer is better than bottled beer FACT: It depends on the bar With properly maintained draft lines, beer from the tap is the freshest you can get. But not all bars keep their lined maintained, which can leave your pint polluted with unwelcome microbes. “A draft system is not a sterile situation,” says Dave Glor, German-trained brewer and fieldquality analyst for New Belgium. Bacteria like pediococcus and lactobacillus produce diacetyl, which makes it taste like somebody shot movie-theater popcorn butter into your beer. And you know that vinegar-like aroma you sometimes smell in dive bars? “That’s acetobacter,” says Glor. “You smell it because it grows on dirty bar mats, but it can grow in dirty tap faucets, too.” And when it does, it spills into your cup and makes your beer taste too acidic.

draft lines—order a bottle or can. That will keep you from drinking an orgy of beer-loving bacteria. MYTH #2: Beer causes a beer belly FACT: Moderate beer consumption poses no serious threat to your belly It seems that whoever coined the phrase “beer belly” had a vendetta against beer. “Excess calories from beer are no more likely to contribute to weight gain than excess calories from anything else,” says Christian Finn, MS, CSCS. In a 2011 review of 31 studies, researchers concluded that only binge drinking was associated with weight gain. Moderate alcohol use appeared benign, and some studies even found that moderate drinkers were thinner on average, regardless of preferred beverage.
with perspective: A typical 12-ounce beer has a carb load similar to a glass of wine—roughly 10-to-20 grams—and according to a 2009 study, it also contains roughly 2.5 grams of barleyderived fiber. That puts beer on par with a slice of whole-wheat bread. In the world of vices, that’s pretty tame.
truly fine zinfandel or sauvignon blanc are easy to see, but how can a drink made from a single ingredient, grapes, be necessarily more complex in flavor than one made from water, yeast, malt and hops and an almost limitless diversity of other ingredients? Ever find coriander or cumin notes in a wine? No? Well, you can in a beer.
MYTH #3: Dark beer is heavy FACT: Not Necessarily Actually, couldn’t be further from the truth. Color in beer comes purely from the grain used in its creation, with darker beers containing more toasted or roasted barley malt and paler beers containing less or no darker malts. And roasting malt doesn’t make it heavier or more caloric.
MYTH #5: Beer and fine dining don’t mix
MYTH #4: Wine is more complex than beer
FACT: Maybe we should have saved “Au Contraire” for this one

world of beer has a style to pair with any food, from the commonplace to the extravagant. (See Myth #4 for more on this.) The reason we tend to place wine at the table rather than beer is because that’s what the French do, and the western world learned much of what it knows about fine dining from the French. MYTH #6: Beer is full of preservatives and other junk FACT: You should check some of your other food labels Some know-it-alls will tell you that beer is loaded with additives and preservatives. The truth is that beer is as all-natural as orange juice or milk (maybe even more so - some of those milk & OJ labels will surprise you). Beer doesn’t need preservatives because it has alcohol and hops, both of which are natural preservatives. Beer is only “processed” in the sense that bread is: It is cooked and fermented, then filtered and packaged. The same can be said for Heineken.
MYTH #7: Beer is high in calories and carbohydrates and loaded with fat and cholesterol FACT: Not so much For a completely natural beverage, beer offers serious low-calorie options. Twelve ounces of a typical stout has the same number of calories as 12 ounces of skim milk: about 125. That’s less than orange juice (150 calories), which is about the same as your standard, “full-calorie” beer. If beer were your only source of nutrition, you’d have to drink one every waking hour just to reach your recommended daily allowance of calories (2,000 to 2,500). And nobody’s recommending you drink that many. The only natural drinks with fewer calories than beer are plain tea, black coffee and water. Surely, beer is loaded with those fattening carbohydrates, right? Wrong again. The average beer has about 12 grams of carbs per 12-ounce serving. The U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance is 300 grams of carbohydrates in a standard 2,000-calorie diet. Continued On Page 28

By “King” James Swann Hello all, today lets chat about Growler Laws in Arizona. As of August, 2012 many licensed stores are allowed to fill growlers for retail sale as long as we adhere to a few easy rules. The container must be glass, clean, less than one gallon and have a printed Govt. “Warning Label”. Pretty simple right?
BEER! SECTION
GROWLER LAWS ARE LAWS
It would seem not as already this year I have turned away countless people who bring in containers that don’t fit the written rules. Is this really a big deal? Yes in fact it is. These laws allow us a luxury we never had before, the ability to bring fresh draft beer home every day. Problem? I am already tired of being the A-HOLE, you know… the guy that has to tell good paying customers NO. IT KILLS ME. Especially since some of our own local breweries are not adhering to such a simple set of rules. I’m tired of telling customers that their (Very Beautiful) Desert Eagle Brewing growler doesn’t have the Govt. label and therefore I can’t fill it. People get really upset. Now it seems breweries have discovered stainless steel and that’s also against the rules. REALLY? I am no goody two shoes but why are we so bent on breaking such brand new laws? I have it on good authority from a local brewery rep. that the police aren’t planning on strictly enforcing this, but there is ALWAYS ONE KNUCKLE HEAD and a $12 fill in an illegal container is not worth the fine or loss of license that comes with it. Ever had to deal with a Liquor Control Officer? Trust me, it’s ugly.
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Lastly, I hear there is already new legislation planned allowing for different materials, so why can’t we just wait ‘til that happens? Please don’t ask me to break the law.

Saturday, May 11th 2013 There are few better ways, if any, to celebrate the beginning of summer than by sipping on a frosty brew of choice as you soak up the warm, enticing Arizona sun. Worry not and smile big, come one come all, as the Scottsdale Beer Festival returns once again provid-
ing Valley residents the opportunity to do just that offering beers from upwards of 50 local and international breweries. This year, mark your calendars big and bold for Saturday, May 11th from 6pm to 10pm as the inaugural beer festival will bring together bands, families, friends, food and thousands of beers to WestWorld’s polo fields. In truly unique fashion, it’s certainly a celebration not to be missed.

kinds of beer creations from area brewers such as Old World, Four Peaks, Mother Road, Prescott, San Tan, Grand Canyon, Fate, Nimbus, OHSO, and Dragoon among many others. The beer festival will also roll out a handful of food trucks to complement its fine brew while providing totally unique live entertainment, giving your beer buzz something to munch on as well. This year’s bands include fan favorites Rock Lobster and Metalhead, two insanely talented and entertaining 80s cover bands, the latter glam rock, to sing with, rock out to and dance the night away. Tickets for the Scottsdale Beer Festival are $40 for general admission and $50 for VIP Admission (VIPs get an extra hour of drinking before anyone else enters). In other words, you would need to drink an entire 24-pack case of beer - and then reach into a second case - simply to reach the government’s recommended daily allotment of carbohydrates. You’re better off munching an apple or drinking some soda pop if you want to carbo-load. Each has about 35 to 40 grams of carbs - three times the number found in a beer. Also, beer has no fat or cholesterol. MYTH #8: A good beer must be high in alcohol FACT: Any beer can be great Many people unfairly associate low alcohol with low flavor. There are plenty of poor quality beers that are high in alcohol content, and the opposite is also true. Some of the famous Belgian and German beers have traditionally high average alcohol content – perhaps
28

8% or 10%. However, the alcohol content is only one feature and doesn’t necessarily account for the good taste. In England, many of the best mild ales have alcohol content of 4% or less – resulting from a higher tax on stronger beer. Of course, the advantage is finding good-tasting, lower alcohol beers is that you can drink more of it! American brewers are experimenting more and more with low alcohol full flavored beer in order to create a more sessionable product. MYTH #9: Bottles are better than cans when it comes to storing beer. FACT: Cans are actually superior storage containers It is easy to see where this one comes from. Just look around: cheap beer comes in cans; expensive beer comes in bottles.
As for a fear that cans might impart a metallic flavor — also
NOT TRUE for most modern cans. There is a coating that keeps the beer from touching the inner aluminum. You can test this by having someone pour the same beer from both a bottle and a can and taking a blind taste test.
BEER! SECTION
But wait a minute. Sunlight affects beer. Left too long in light, beer can become “skunked.” Skunked beer is the result of a molecule in hops — isohumulones — that breaks down in light, and the broken-down version of isohumulones resembles the stink molecule release by skunks. Glass bottles let in light; cans do not. Brown bottles do a pretty good job of keeping the light wavelength that skunks beer out, but that only delays the skunking process. Can let in no light, so the beer cannot skunk.
There you have it, nine beer myths from all over the web debunked, hopefully for good. Now get back to Beer Week. Oh, yeah, one more freebie, Ben Franklin never said “Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” You can look that one up yourself.

RATTLERS LOOK TO TURN PREDATORS INTO PREY Arizona Rattlers vs. Orlando Predators
Sunday, April 28th at US Airways Center The best defense in the Arena Football League was recently no match for the stellar offense of the Arizona Rattlers, who handily defeated the San Antonio Talons 83-40 at the US Airways Center. The same feisty, high-octane Rattlers squad now has their sights set on hunting down and dismantling an always dangerous foe in the Orlando Predators. With another powerful home field advantage on their side, Sunday, April 28th at US Airways Center should prove to set the scene for yet another highpowered offensive battle as the team looks to further extend an impressive string of wins. Kickoff is set for 3pm as the Rattlers look forward to yet another packed house inside the electric US Airways Center. Be sure to come out and enjoy a great day of Arena Football with family, friends, and your very own home team, the Arizona Rattlers! Visit www.azrattlers.com for tickets and detailed team and season information.

of “NBA plAyoffs” oN TNT •This is your second year doing the NBA studio show on TNT. How do you like doing it?
It’s fun. I think we give (fans) a mixture of comedy and expertise. Like me, when I’m watching I don’t want to hear all that straight talk all the time. Every now and then, I want to know what’s going on with Paul Pierce or what’s going on with (Kevin) Garnett. But I think that’s why we’re the No. 1 show, because people look forward to our antics.
Ryan O’Neal
“Love Story” (1970) Hockey obviously isn’t this iconic drama’s main thrust, but it does have its place as Oliver (Ryan O’Neal) invites new girlfriend Jenny (Ali MacGraw) to watch him play ... and unleash his anger on the rival team. “Slap Shot” (1977) Well, of course. This list would be incomplete without the iconic comedy starring Paul Newman as a player-coach of a minorleague team whose roster also comes to include the bespectacled, vicious Hanson brothers.

Thursday 2013 NFL Draft
5 p.m. on A ESPN The Kansas City Chiefs have the first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft, which starts with Round 1 tonight at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Top players on the board include Alabama guard Chance Warmack, Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher and Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner. The remaining rounds air Friday and Saturday on ESPN, ESPN2 and NFL Network.

4 p.m. on * KSAZ It’s short-track racing under the lights tonight at Virginia’s Richmond International Raceway, where the Sprint Cup’s top drivers will trade paint in the Toyota Owners 400. A field including Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon will take to the .75-mile D-oval in a race won last year by Kyle Busch for the fourth consecutive time.

Sunday MLB Baseball
10 a.m. on 0 TBS Two AL East rivals clash today in the Bronx, where Travis Hafner and the New York Yankees close out a four-game series against Jose Bautista and the Toronto Blue Jays. Injuries and free agent defections have robbed the Bombers of much of their thunder, but veteran pickups in spring have buoyed them. The Jays, who came into the season with high hopes after winter wheeling and dealing, have had problems on the mound and at bat.
MLB Baseball
5 p.m. on A ESPN Two postseason hopefuls collide tonight at Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers conclude a three-game interleague series against the Atlanta Braves. The Tigers are coming off a World Series loss to the San Francisco Giants but hope Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera can get them back there. The Braves, who as the wild card fell to the Cardinals in a one-game playoff in 2012, hope to win the NL East outright with offseason additions Justin and B.J. Upton in tow.
In baseball, being labeled a “five-tool player” can be as much a burden as a blessing. For with that label – which means a player who can hit for average and power, field, throw, and run – comes lofty expectations. And when those expectations aren’t met, another label, “bust,” often follows. Such is the case with Justin Upton, the Atlanta Braves’ athletic left fielder who was off to a sizzling start in the season’s first week and a half after five-plus solid seasons punctuated with flashes of brilliance in Arizona. Through eight games in 2013, the 25-year-old native of Norfolk, Va. was batting .400 with six home runs, nine RBIs, a .424 on-base percentage, a 1.100 slugging percentage and a 1.524 OPS – numbers that no doubt give Braves General Manager Frank Wren a measure of satisfaction after taking heat for dealing former All-Star infielder Martin Prado, pitcher Randall Delgado and three prospects to the Diamondbacks for Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson back in January. And the team is also prospering, winning seven of its first eight games to stand alone atop the National League East with baseball’s best record, much of it due to Upton’s heroics. True, he can’t keep up his torrid pace, but if he can fulfill comparisons to a young Ken Griffey Jr. when he was drafted first overall by Arizona in 2005, the Braves would be thrilled.

ALBUM REVIEWS Dawes Gives Us Brilliant Stories Don’t End, Phoenix’s Bankrupt! is Anything but… Stories Don’t End is one of the best records you will hear this year. Dawes successfully combines country, rock and Americana with canyon-deep lyrics about love, life and what makes us human. Singer Taylor Goldsmith grabs hold of you with his passionate vocals and makes you feel every beat of his heart as he sings his guts out. “Just Beneath the Surface” bookends the album as an unusually creative reprise at the end puts a refreshing take on the song. “Someone Will” is chock full of poetic lyrics, beautiful imagery and powerful emotion, but all of this is topped by the surprise at the very end when it is revealed that the song isn’t about what you think it is. Stories Don’t End is an album you won’t soon forget.
Be prepared for a bit of a curve ball if you are expecting Phoenix’s latest, Bankrupt!, to be similar to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Outside of their first single, “Entertainment,” nothing on Bankrupt! says megahit, and the focus here is more on synth-heavy electro music than groovy dance rock. “The Real Thing” sounds like a cross between The Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979” and any number of Prince songs from the 1980s, the instrumental title track features dizzying harpsichord-like synths before morphing into a maudlin piano ballad, and the dreamy “Bourgeois” is made even lighter by singer Thomas Mars’ airy vocals. Bankrupt! succeeds because it dares to be different from its predecessor. It might not make any Top 10 lists at year’s end, but it’s a solid release.
