SARA WATKINS LIVE AT MIM Sunday, May 5th at 7pm

“Watkins isn’t afraid to pluck at the heartstrings by whatever means necessary, either, be it a handful of well-placed words or a rosin-powdered bow.”—The Wrap

Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sara Watkins is an American musical prodigy who plays the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. She also played percussion while touring with the Decemberists and enjoyed widespread success with the progressive GRAMMY-winning bluegrass group Nickel Creek, which included her older brother Sean and childhood friend Chris Thile. When Nickel Creek disbanded in 2007 after a string of best-selling albums, Watkins threw herself into her solo career. One could say that Watkins’s solo debut has been a lifetime in the making. Opening act: Kris Oriowski. Sara wil hit the stage at 8pm.

Tickets: $22.50–$27.50. Circle of Friends donors who give $500+ annually are eligible for 10% off concert tickets. Visit www.themim. org or call 480.478.6000 for more information.

Friday, May 10, 2013, 7:30 p.m. Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present an outdoor concert by trumpeter Chris Botti on Friday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater. The performance is made possible by presenting sponsor AAM Edge with additional support from Arlene and Michael Lanes, and Distrito at the Saguaro. Tickets are available for $39 through ScottsdalePerformingArts. org or (480) 499-TKTS (8587). With his uniquely expressive sound and soaring musical imagination, Chris Botti has thoroughly established himself as one of the most innovative figures of the contemporary music world. Now a major artist in his own right, performing worldwide, selling more than 3 million albums, he has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre. Botti earned the 2013 Grammy Award for “Best Pop Instrumental Album” for his new Columbia Records CD, Impressions. It is the latest in a stellar parade of albums, starting with 2004’s When I Fall in Love and continuing with To Love Again, Italia and the CD/DVD Chris Botti in Boston, that have firmly established him as the world’s largest-selling jazz instrumentalist. As Botti began his planning for the new album, he was determined to do some “familiar songs” for Impressions, songs that reached back to his fascination with the melody and balladry that have been essential to his music since he first picked up a trumpet. Songs such as What a Wonderful World, Summertime and Over the Rainbow certainly fulfill that desire. But the album’s far-ranging program also encompasses many other areas, deeply influenced by conversations Botti had with fans

during the busy, world-wide touring that keeps him on the road as much as 300 days a year. Botti seemed destined to become a musician – and even to become the kind of musician he is today – almost from the very beginning. Born in Portland, Ore., he was encouraged to pursue music by his mother, a concert pianist. He also had an early taste of the international world that would become his primary territory as a successful performing artist. His father, who is Italian, taught English and Italian languages, and he took the family to live in Italy for several years, beginning when Botti was in the first grade.

ARTS! COVER STORY

GRAMMY AWARD WINNER CHRIS BOTTI PERFORMS A CONCERT UNDER THE STARS

A different, but equally significant connection took place when Botti was 12, and he heard Miles Davis play My Funny Valentine. The impact it had not only persuaded him to make a life time commitment to the trumpet, it also launched the affection for melody, space and balance that have been intrinsic aspects of Botti’s musical vision. After attending Indiana University, and studying with the highly regarded jazz educator David Baker, the great trumpet teacher Bill Adam, jazz trumpeter Woody Shaw and jazz saxophonist George Coleman, he moved to New York in the mid-1980s. His early career was spent crafting his skills in settings reaching from the Buddy Rich Big Band and Frank Sinatra to Natalie Cole and Joni Mitchell. Throughout the 1990s and into the new century, Botti played extensively with Paul Simon, and had an especially creative association with Sting. Those gigs – and those relationships – were, he says, powerful learning experiences. “Watching artists like Sting and Paul and Joni Mitchell,” explains Botti, “how they get in and out of songs, how they introduce people, whether they would do this or that

sort of thing, what they would say about one of their players. All that was a huge asset for me. I wouldn’t be the performer I am today without that background.” SCOTTSDALE CIVIC CENTER AMPHITHEATER Seating is not provided in Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater so guests should bring a blanket or low-rise lawn chair. Picnic foods and beverages are available for cash purchase. Pets and outside food and beverages may not be brought into the Amphitheater grounds. Gates open at 6 p.m. The Amphitheater is located at 75th Street and Main Street (between the Civic Center Library and

‘Kon-Tiki’ Pål Sverre Hagen plays an explorer who embarks on an epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in an effort prove it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 - 119 minutes) Stan: “What a powerful piece of filmmaking” is the thought that reverberated through my mind as I sat through the closing credits. Granted, my view of films is through the eyes of a filmmaker, a teller of stories is our mantra; this is one ‘heck of a story’. The fact that it’s representative of a true event in history makes it even more astonishing. Remembering the Oscar® winning 1950 documentary, filmed by the explorers on board, this presentation with the outstanding ensemble performances of actors, received an Oscar® nomination at this year’s awards, is definitely a ‘Must See’ film on my list of 2013!

‘Midget Zombie Takeover’ A group of college students get together for a hot tub party only for it to be crashed by a bunch of tiny, uninvited guests who are hungry for human flesh. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR - 105 minutes) Joseph: “Midget Zombie Takeover” was reportedly made on a production budget of $2,000. However, logic leads one to believe that about $1,999 of that went toward paying a theater to show the new comedic horror flick on the big screen whereas the remaining $1 funded the atrocious acting, shoddy special effects and terrible technical traits. It is impossible to imagine that even writer/director Glenn Berggoetz himself would find this amateurish abomination amusing to watch. However, something tells me that Berggoetz had more than enough fun making this movie to invalidate any and all cruel criticism of the execrable end product.

‘No Place on Earth’ Filmmaker Janet Tobias tells the story of the matriarch of a Jewish family in the Ukraine who, in October 1942, led her family underground to hide from the pursuing Nazis where they then stayed in total darkness for nearly a year and a half. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (PG-13 - 81 minutes) Joseph: The story of survival that is relayed in filmmaker Janet Tobias’s new documentary “No Place on Earth” is truly remarkable. However, the movie itself leaves a lot to be desired. One can almost sympathize with Tobias, though, as she likely bit off more than she could chew with this particular tale which is all but impossible to tell within the nonfiction framework without resorting to robotic re-enactments that rob viewers of an authentic feeling of desperation much less the subsequent sigh of relief. Sometimes, the only feasible format is a scripted story. This courageous chronicle is begging for exactly that.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Dante Ariola (‘Arthur Newman’) By Stan Robinson ‘Arthur Newman’ is the story of a man (Colin Firth) who hates his job, his ex-wife and son hate him, and he’s blown his one shot at living his dream. He fakes his own death and assumes a new identity in order to start over. His road trip towards a new life is interrupted by the arrival of the beautiful but fragile Mike (Emily Blunt), who is also trying to leave her past behind, and their real journey, that of healing, begins.

‘The Silence’ When a young girl vanishes on a hot summer night and her bicycle is found in the exact place where another young girl was killed 23 years ago, the dramatic present forces those involved in the original case to face their past. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR - 118 minutes)

‘Simon Killer’

Stan: Don’t let the fact that it’s English subtitled deter you from experiencing writer/director Baran bo Odar’s ‘The Silence’. With a moody ‘X-Files’ edge, along with elements of a ‘Cold Case’ facts presentation, and the ‘objective view’ production style (we the viewer know as much as the central characters), ‘The Silence’ is a first rate psychological thriller. The slow and deliberate pacing builds an unnerving tension as our own urgency is heightened as one of the contemporary investigators becomes obsessed with the case, andis diligently driven in thepursuit of solving both the past, and present crimes. The film rivets one to every plot detail, and the shock of the final scene as it fades to black for the closing credits.

Joseph: “Simon Killer” mixes obscenity with insipidity. However, before you get too excited about the promise of seeing something scandalous, know that for every minute of lewdness there are at least a dozen minutes of boredom. However, the worst part about writer/ director Antonio Campos’s new drama is that it leads absolutely nowhere, meaning that viewers spend 105 minutes with one of the most pathetic protagonists to have ever graced the silver screen - played by Brady Corbet, who was so dynamic in 2007’s “Funny Games” - for seemingly no reason whatsoever much less one that is even remotely rewarding or redemptive.

Brady Corbet plays a recent college graduate who - after a breakup - flees to Paris, where his involvement with a prostitute (Mati Diop) begins to reveal a potentially dark past. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR - 105 minutes)

(On ‘pitching’ the story to get funding) “You know what I tried to do is reverse that process. I found a story that I kind of related to and instead of pitching it to anybody; the only persons I sort of pitched to were the actors. Colin (Firth) read it and related to it, and then finding someone who had chemistry with him and Emily Blunt, and then we all agreed, lets try to get this film made. So it was kind of like, ‘here’s the script and this is really the movie we’re making, and, here are the people. So there wasn’t like a process of selling it to the studio, or an independent financier. I tried to reverse it because it seemed that with the ‘pitch thing’, there’s something that’s unauthentic about it. It’s too much of a sales pitch in a way. One can read the script, you know the actors who are going to play those roles, I think that gave them a pretty good idea if they wanted to back the film or not. And it worked out nicely with a really lovely group of financiers!

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT “For me, since I do commercials, not that I want to do ‘art house’ films, but I’m definitely a fan of good acting. I thought, who would be amazing in this role and that’s really the opportunity I was taking and the chance to work with amazing actors! This is a quiet movie, and a performance based movie, there’s a lot of dialogue and a lot of emotion. It was 30 days of shooting but that being said, we were doing 3 to 6 pages of script a day, depending on the day. That was definitely to have the actors not feeling rushed but not working at a TV episodic pace, but at times not far off. “Reactions to screenings of ‘Arthur Newman’ have been good, people who are 40 and older relate to the film for one set of reasons while younger people who haven’t gone through what Arthur has gone through yet, kind of look at it from a different perspective but still get it. It’s a tricky film tone wise but I think that’s what attracted me to it because its not a European film but its also not a popcorn film and I think it gives an opportunity for some people who don’t necessarily go out and see films of a little bit slower pace, and that are not explaining every single thing to the audience. Its ‘showing’ and not ‘telling’ at times, and some who are Colin Firth fans will get a chance to watch the kind of film that they don’t normally go out to see.” – Dante Ariola

Many people work hard at cultivating a down-toearth TV persona. Alex Guarnaschelli simply is that Alex way. Guarnaschelli The Manhattan native, of Food Network’s “Chopped,” “Iron Chef America” and “Alex’s Day Off,” is devoid of airs. She’s making the rounds with her new cookbook, “Old School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook.” At the time of this interview, she had just won “America’s Next Iron Chef,” and though seemingly preparing for it her whole life, she was stunned and thrilled. Her mother is noted cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli, and the TV chef is a devoted cookbook reader. While some chefs pride themselves on creating on the spot, Guarnaschelli talks about studying her well-worn cookbooks.

TRAVEL GUIDE: COSTA RICA I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica recently and was very excited to return and write an article about the wonders of Costa Rican beer. Sadly, that would make the article very short as there really is not much a beer scene in the country. Sure Costa Rica Craft Brewing

Company makes some pretty decent beers, the Segua Red Ale is actually pretty darn good. But, alas, the beer is not widely available. Despite theoretically having national distribution, there are very few stores carrying the product. I also have heard great things about Volcano Brewing Company which is actually a combination brewery and hotel. There beers are only available in the Arenal area. The hotel looks like it would be worth trying out if you are planning a visit. They are currently offering an $89 per night special which includes a “farm fresh restaurant’ all you can eat special and unlimited beers from the brewery.

The rest of the beer is somewhat pedestrian. Order a cerveza from your bartender and you will most likely be handed one of the ubiquitous Imperial lagers. Produced by Cerveceria de Costa Rica but actually owned by a large conglomerate known as Florida Ice and Farm Company, the beer is nothing to get too terribly excited about. It is Costa Rica’s most popular brand. It seems like you can’t move 10 feet without spying the very Russian looking eagleemblazoned logo of Imperial. The beer itself is a straightforward American-style pilsner. Light bodied with a somewhat sweet malt and corn base, a crisp dry mouthfeel, and just a light pepper

kiss of hops in the finish. There are other beers available to be sure. Pilsen which is similar to one of the American budget pilsners with even more sweetness to it is the second most popular brand. The Bavaria line is next. Available in both Gold and Dark, this is Costa Rica’s nod to the Modelo beers from Mexico. There is also Rock Ice…the name pretty much says it all; and finally, domestically produced Heineken. This version is made by Cerveceria de Costa Rica under license from the Dutch brewing giant. It is always fresh and usually enjoyable. Continued On Page 40

There are a handful of Belgian imports floating around in various locations and Corona Extra is considered a major beer delicacy there. So, clearly an article on the joys of Costa Rican beer is not in the cards, but I have managed to kill about 400 words explaining why it isn’t. What should we talk about the rest of the article? Monkeys? Costa Rica is famous for their monkeys and, outside of the bigger cities, you will probably see monkeys in the trees daily. But that doesn’t seem right for a beer column so let’s discuss why the best beer you have ever had while on vacation would never make it into your shopping cart if it were available in Arizona. People come back from trips to Costa Rica or Brazil or from a cruise constantly and tell me they had the most amazing beer and they just have to have it available in Arizona. They explain to me what an amazing flavor it had and why it would probably be the best selling beer if it were only sold here. My response is always

the same…they would buy one six-pack and complain that the import version is not the same as the version available in (insert any Caribbean or South American country name here). And they would be right. First off, import beer, by its entire nature is not going to be as fresh as it is at the point of production. Secondly, and probably the bigger reason is what I call the “Vacation Reaction.” Here’s the deal. Picture, if you will, sitting on a secluded beach on a hot day, watching the Atlantic Ocean nip at your toes. The handsome waiter, or pretty waitress, is bringing you ice cold beers whenever you want. These ice cold beers are perfect because the sun is out, you are relaxing and they have just enough alcohol to give you a buzz, but not enough to get you drunk. They are almost always a lighter style lager, so they are crisp and refreshing. In short, they are perfection in a bottle… and there is even a certain comfort in holding that ice cold bottle with beads of condensation running down it. The folks at Corona Continued On Page 42

By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, today lets chat about a new(ish) phenomenon in the craft beer industry that’s getting a lot of attention here in Arizona, KICK STARTER. What is a Kick Starter? It’s an internet program used by many uzpstart breweries to raise money for the purposes of funding everything from equipment to just getting the doors open.

BEER! SECTION

KICK STARTER BREWERIES…. WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

It sounds easy enough but does it really work? First know this, these plans are All or Nothing situations. Basically, you the consumer are asked to donate money in support of the cause. In order for the brewery to benefit “end game” they must meet a preset monetary target. This can be quite challenging, in that if your goals are too small people will most certainly wonder how you will actually accomplish anything. If the goals are too high, well I’m sure you can guess what happens. The next question is of course, can any business make it with this model and where is the rest of the money coming from? Are they basing their entire prospect for funding on this program or is this indeed just a kick starter? With a solid business plan and proper investment, is this even necessary?

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Lastly, know that most kick starter attempts here in the valley have failed. One notable success was the soon to be open Wilderness Brewing. These guys pushed the limits when it came to this platform and I think may have broken the mold. Secondly, there was also an investor willing to match the funds they generated upon completion. Hometown boy comes good but with a wise plan involving more funding. Therein lies the real success. Score: Kick Starter 1, Common Sense 10. Anyone wanna open a brewery? Until Next Week, Cheers!

have figured it out. Have you ever seen their “Find Your Beach” commercials? Sure you have, and that is exactly what they are talking about. The reality is when you return from vacation and go back to work you are back to your normal routine. The beer you enjoyed on the beach is just one more way of remembering how pleasant the vacation was. However, it is just that… a memory. You are back to having the widest selection of beers available just about anywhere at your disposal and if you want your beach feeling, well that’s what Corona is for. If your secluded beach beer was available, it just would not be the same because…wait for it…you ain’t on the beach anymore. Anyway, I don’t know if any of this is making sense to anybody but

me. Regardless, the moral of this story is enjoy the local beers when you travel, don’t worry about whether they are light lagers, plain pilsners or some other style that you would not normally drink. That is part of your vacation experience. Drink Imperial in Costa Rica (of course keep your eyes open for Costa Rica Craft Brewing Company beers), sit on the beach, order the whole Red Snapper and dig out the fatty flesh of the cheeks just below the eyeballs (another thing you would probably never do at home) and let all of your cares slip away. You will come back to the real world soon enough and you will need those fond memories to get you through until your next vacation. So as they say in Costa Rica, Pura Vida.

The New York Mets’ youth movement was supposed to mean a few more years of misery for the Citi Field faithful, but Matt Harvey has given them a reason to believe better days aren’t that far off. In the season’s first month, the big righthander with the 95 mph fastball and wicked slider has given early indications he is indeed the staff ace the Mets envisioned when they drafted him seventh overall out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. Through three starts, the 24-year-old native of New London, Conn., posted a 3-0 record with an ERA of 0.82, giving up just six hits and six walks while striking out 25 in 22 innings. Included in that was a no-hitter he took into the seventh inning against the Minnesota Twins on April 13 that was broken up by a Justin Morneau solo home run. More importantly, he’s exhibited a poise, maturity and self-confidence on the mound that suggest a player years his senior and have drawn comparisons to another stalwart who wore a Met uniform, Hall of Famer Tom Seaver.

Saturday 139th Kentucky Derby

1 p.m. on , KPNX Held for the 139th time at Churchill Downs in Louisville, the first leg of Thoroughbred racing’s coveted Triple Crown is run at 1 1/4 miles and has a field of up to 20 of the sport’s top 3year-olds. No horse has won the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes since Affirmed ran the gauntlet in 1978. I’ll Have Another, who won last year’s Derby and Preakness, saw his Triple Crown chances dashed when tendonitis forced him out of the Belmont.

Sunday NASCAR Racing

9 a.m. on * KSAZ “The big one” — multiple-car pileups that are characteristic of restrictor-plate races — will be on everyone’s lips today as the Sprint Cup fires up for the Aaron’s 499. The 2.66-mile tri-oval at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway has seen its share of them over the years, but last year’s race was an exception as there were only five cautions. In the end, Brad Keselowski held off Kyle Busch at the finish to take his second victory of 2012.

GAME! SECTION D-BACKS INTRODUCE SONORANSTYLE HOT DOG AT CHASE FIELD Team partners with Univision to offer special Sonoran Dog Package, El Pa’quetellenes The Arizona Diamondbacks (@ Dbacks) will offer a Sonoran-style hot dog at every home game for $7 at Red Hot Grill locations in sections 126 and 320. In addition, the team has partnered with Univision to offer a special Sonoran Dog Package, El Pa’quetellenes, for only $15 that includes an Outfield Reserve ticket, Sonoranstyle hot dog, 24 ounce Pepsi and a coupon for a free cookie from SUBWAY® Restaurants. El Pa’quetellenes, presented by Univision, is available at every D-backs home game and can be purchased online at www.losdbacks.com. The Sonoran Dog is a hot dog wrapped in mesquite-smoked bacon that is grilled, and then topped with pico de gallo, ranchstyle beans and a mayo drizzle. The Sonoran Dog originated in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, Mexico, and is traditionally found in Phoenix, Tucson and Sonora. The latest in a series of overtures to raise the D-backs’ profile in the Hispanic marketplace, the D-backs recently made their third trip to Mexico within the last seven months to help build connections and relationships with officials and citizens in Mexico. representatives, including Legend Luis Gonzalez, traveled to Mexico City with a contingent of several Phoenix officials, including Mayor Greg Stanton, to meet with officials from the travel and tourism industry detailing the benefits of a visit to Phoenix, including Chase Field. A D-backs contingent also traveled to Hermosillo last fall for the Opening Night of Hermosillo Naranjeros and returned again earlier this year for the Caribbean Series. The Caribbean Series was held at Estadio Sonora, the new ballpark that was built with the D-backs’ input on planning and construction. The ballpark includes several features that resemble the awardwinning Spring Training home of the D-backs, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The D-backs have a long-standing history in Mexico, having played exhibition games in Hermosillo each spring from 2008-10. Dbacks President & CEO Derrick Hall sits on the Board of Directors of the Arizona-Mexico Commission and the organization worked closely with the World Baseball Classic to host the first round of the tournament in March. The game between Team Mexico and Team USA drew 44,256 fans, the highest attended game of the entire tournament.

Rod Stewart is set to release his first album in nearly two decades. Time will be available in stores on Tuesday, May 7th. “Time” is a landmark release in Stewart’s career, born from a burst of inspiration from which he rediscovered his voice as a songwriter and rekindled his gift for writing the honest, nerve-touching narratives that have been the cornerstone to the first three decades of his career. Since 1991, Stewart, the lyricist and melodist behind such staples as “Tonight’s The Night,” “You Wear It Well,” “You’re In My Heart,” “The Killing of Georgie” and the indelible “Maggie May,” had simply lost his songwriting muse. But, beginning in 2011, during the period he began working on what would become his internationally best-selling autobiography, Rod, it returned. Preorders are available now via iTunes and Amazon.
