On May 5th, 2013 they will be hosting a live music festival on Cinco de Mayo featuring the dynamic crew known as Ozomatli. Ozomatli is known for their diverse musical style and influences, “a notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican and Indian raga”. Sinergy Entertainment Group is changing the way Tucson does nightlife. They aim to give everyone something to do. From Zen Rock’s high intensity party atmosphere, to Sapphire’s amazing skydeck view and relaxing atmosphere to the almost complete, H20 Discotech, which will be one of Arizona’s state of the art nightcubs. Cinco de Ozo is no different. This event will be the place to be on Cinco de Mayo, as it certainly appeals to all different tastes. Patrons can expect a day filled with fun, music and food with some of the best food trucks in town. Featuring the delights of gourmet Mexican cuisine by Seis Curbside, mouthwatering eats by Guero Loco’s Bubba Que, Indian cuisine by The Twisted Tandoor, a blend of Latin and Caribbean by DC Jumbie, and for anyone with a sweet tooth, Truckin Good Cupcakes and cotton candy by Fluff It Up. Tucson’s Bartenders to Compete in 5th Annual Agave Fest Tucson’s best bartenders will go head to head to be named the winner of the 5th Annual Agave Fest, kicking off Cinco de Mayo weekend on Friday, May 3rd at 7pm. Ally Baron will return to the Hotel Congress Plaza to defend her title against a new crop of bartenders who want a piece of the agave action. Aaron DeFeo (Casino del Sol), Luke Anable (Penca), Cameron Fisher (Hotel Congress), David Kwon (47 Scott), Andrew Record (Playground), Jon Herrera (Elliott’s on Congress) and Daniel Cole (Sky Bar) will shake up the evening in a cocktail competition with Patron Silver as the main ingredient. Anything goes, and the mixologists are free to create an agave cocktail of their choice for the crowd’s tasting pleasure. Only one rule: No margaritas allowed!
The yearly celebration of allthings-Agave, sponsored by Patron, will showcase a wide variety of tequila, mescal, sotol and bacanora, including some notable standouts like Herencia Mezcalero Mezcal, Pura Vida Tequila, and Hacienda Sotol. Avion Tequila, voted the “World’s Best Tasting Tequila” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition will also be featured, along with many more awardwinning distillations.
The 5th Annual Agave Fest will take place on the Hotel Congress plaza. REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.
With Vince Vaughn and Chris Pratt listed online to appear in the remake, I’m afraid much of the subtle comedy and heartwarming moments will be lost in translation. See the original and be glad you did, as I predict our American stars will be unable to replicate what makes this so likable. Joseph: Maybe it is just the “My Name is Earl” withdrawals talking, but “Starbuck” would have been a much better television
sitcom than a feature-length film. The small screen format would not only make better use of the serial nature of early scenes in writer/director Ken Scott’s new comedy but would also be more forgiving of some of its absurd aspects. After all, it all seems somewhat silly - not to mention outlandish. Still, in spite of that and a premise that comes across as contrived, one cannot help but surrender to the story’s good-intentioned sweetness and sentimentality.

Filmmaker Rodney Ascher explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film “The Shining.” Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Playing exclusively at The Loft Cinema. (NR - 102 minutes)
Patrick Huard plays a perpetual screw up who, having been a habitual sperm donor in his youth, discovers that he is the biological father of 533 children - 142 of whom are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of the prolific donor code-named Starbuck. Playing exclusively at The Loft Cinema. (R - 109 minutes)
Joseph: It is difficult to determine what filmmaker Rodney Ascher’s intent was with his new documentary “Room 237,” in which he explores numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film “The Shining.” Those theories are so outrageously off the wall that they simply cannot be taken seriously in even the slightest and it instead comes across as comedic albeit accidentally. The experience may be amusing to some - specifically fans of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” - but others will likely be left bewildered. It is similar to becoming stuck in a conversation with a crackpot with no expedient escape.
Stan: Expecting the common recent trend of adult themed comedy ‘French language style’ with English subtitles with ‘Hangover’ films overtones, and yes, the start of ‘Starbuck’ for the first third of the film falls right into that theme, the movie slowly morphs into serious overtones addressing biological parenthood, older children living with parents, and the topic of rights of those born of sperm donors. As closing credits roll, writer/director Ken Scott left me with the thought, ‘Coming of age, has no age limit’.

“Mr. Brooks” (2007): The movie may not succeed as a whole, but Hurt stands out as the sinister alter ego who appears only to the title character (Kevin Costner) ... and coaches him in murder.
“The Accidental Tourist” (1988): In one of his multiple teamings with director Lawrence Kasdan, Hurt plays a travel writer coping with the death of his son while getting involved with an offbeat dog trainer (Oscar winner Geena Davis). “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1985): An Oscar for best actor was Hurt’s reward for playing a prisoner in a South American jail.
“The Big Chill” (1983): As part of an ideal acting
ensemble, Hurt plays a cynical drug peddler reunited with college friends for a peer’s funeral.

Actor Tony Shalhoub (‘Pain & Gain’) By Joseph J. Airdo “Maybe I have a different opinion of him than the average audience member might. I like him for a lot of reasons. First of all, he is a self-made man. He started with very little, worked very hard and achieved a lot. That requires a certain amount of toughness and resilience. And that toughness is revealed over the course of this movie with all of the stuff that he is put through and all of the pain and torture that he has to undergo. He somehow manages to push through it all, endure and exact his revenge. “Stupidly, I asked that I do a lot of my own [stunts]. I didn’t do all of it, of course. But I really should have let [my stunt double] do more. Here is this guy who is very skilled. He is ready, willing and able to do it. I don’t know whether it was the testosterone-fueled environment that we were in for
a couple of months but I sort of felt like I had to tough it out and there were a couple times that I really wish I hadn’t - especially some of the getting thrown around and thrashed about.

Social Entrepreneurs Alok Appadurai & Jade Beall had the crazy idea to shake up the apparel world and do what very few clothing companies are willing to do: sacrifice profits in order to stand behind their beliefs. On November 17, 2012, they hosted the Grand Opening for the flagship boutique for Fed By Threads in Tucson, AZ, their humanitarian clothing project, which combines feeding 12 emergency meals to hungry Americans per item sold using sustainable fabrics that are Made-In-America. Since they launched the company in May 2012, they have fed over 36,894 meals through their humanitarian efforts and with the help of a network of food banks across the country. As they learned more about the realities of non-organic fabric production, such as cotton requiring 25% of global pesticide use, it became clear they had no choice but to source organic fabrics, even if it meant hacking away at profit margins. Through luck and hard work, they finally found a manufacturer that does in fact combine modern design and sustainable fabrics. Fed By Threads now uses fully compostable & biodegradable
cellulose-based mailers to ship their apparel, which have two adhesive strips so that they can be used twice. The hang tags they use are made from recycled paper. Their office paper is 100% recycled and then recycled when they are done with it. And all of this raises their costs. When asked why they are doing things this way when it would be so much easier and more profitable to throw in the towel and be like most other apparel companies, Alok says, “Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are usually the ones that do.” Jade quickly adds, “Fed By Threads represents a way of life we feel is important. It offers Americans an opportunity to feed their fellow Americans, protect the environment, and support American jobs.” Alok adds, “Americans are telling us this matters to them.
