By John Crook

“The Office” says goodbye after nine seasons Thursday on NBC.

When Jenna Fischer was a little girl, she loved watching the hit NBC sitcom “Cheers” with her family and fantasizing about how much fun it would be to work as a member of a TV comedy ensemble like that. As luck would have it, that dream came true for her when she landed the plum role of Pam Beesly (later Halpert) on “The Office,” the long-running comedy that finishes its nine-year run on the Peacock network with a one-hour finale on Thursday, May 16. On that same night, when NBC begins an hourlong special that immediately precedes the final “Office” episode, Fischer will be making her New York theater debut in a much-anticipated work by A-list playwright Neil LaBute, a career milestone any actress would covet – and she knows she never would have gotten

it without the years she put in at Dunder Mifflin, the fictional Scranton, Pa., paper company where Pam plugged away and eventually found love with her colleague and soul mate, Jim Halpert (John Krasinski). “ ‘The Office’ made all my dreams come true,” the actress says from New York during a break in rehearsals for her play. “When I moved to Los Angeles to be an actress, all I wanted to do was to be part of a group of people on a really funny show that I truly loved. And it came true. That’s a really powerful thing, to be a little girl and wish for this thing and then have it happen. I got to be on the ‘Cheers’ of my generation. John and I got to be Sam and Diane, which is what I wanted more than anything.” As fans hope for the best for the Halperts, both Fischer and Krasinski freely acknowledge that they expect “The Office” to be a once-in-a-lifetime professional experience. “Everything else that happens now is gravy,” Fischer says. “If ‘The Office’ is the only thing that I am remembered for, that’s still the greatest gift of my life. I hope that I will go on to play other roles that are interesting and move people and are creatively satisfying to me. I think theater might be a good fit for me for awhile, because I know that I am not going to ever find another TV show like this. I honestly don’t think lightning strikes twice with something like this.” “I was a waiter before this,” Krasinski says. “ ‘The Office’ has given me every opportunity I’ve ever had, along with a pile of experiences and moments and friends that have changed my life forever. To say it’s been transformative is an understatement. You can go from the basics, in that every job I’ve ever gotten was because of this show, to the more existential conversation that I never would have met my wife (actress Emily Blunt) had I not gotten this show. I never would have been in L.A., and she never would have known who I was. “You can go pretty deep with this and realize that, for all of us, in one way or another, this will be the most important thing we were ever a part of.” Career Education

‘Aquí y Allá’

‘At Any Price’

‘In the House’

Pedro De los Santos plays a man who, having returned home to a small mountain village in Mexico after years of working in the US, struggles to rebuild his family and follow his dream of starting a band. Playing exclusively at The FilmBar. (NR - 110 minutes)

Dennis Quaid plays a farmer who wants his rebellious son (Zac Efron) to help expand his family’s empire. However, said son instead has his sights set on becoming a professional racecar driver. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 105 minutes)

A teenager insinuates himself into the house of one of his classmates and writes about it in essays prompting his teacher to rediscover his enthusiasm for his work. However, the boy’s intrusion unleashes a series of uncontrollable events. Playing exclusively at X. (R - 105 minutes)

Joseph: “Aquí y Allá” tells a deeply affecting story in an extremely authentic way. At times, writer/director Antonio Méndez Esparza’s drama feels so realistic that you almost forget that you are watching a fictional narrative and instead take it all in as an incredibly intimate documentary. However, while the shooting style and straightforward performances make for a meaningful movie, slow pacing and a redundant second half prevent it from being a very entertaining one - or at least one that is capable of retaining the average viewer’s interest from beginning to end. It is still a commendable effort, though.

Stan: When a film presentation can slowly and certainly deliberately draw a viewers into the complicated lives of the central characters while presenting a view of an industry that those of us, this reviewer included, who’s formative years were spent with the goals of success in an urban environment. Director and co-writer Ramin Bahrani slowly weave into our subconscious the competitive world of modern agriculture and farming empire, solid character portrayals by the ensemble cast, as the ultimate issues of right and wrong, and family loyalty, serves to confirm those same realities within our own lives as we examine the essence of our own moral fiber.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Joseph: “In the House” starts with a setup that slowly but surely shows plenty of promise. That is to say that writer/director François Ozon’s new thriller, based on Juan Mayorga’s play, winds up rather well. However, just when the tension is so tight that the viewer has absolutely no idea where this tale will go, Ozon demonstrates that he may have been just as clueless about how to make the most of this story which gets rather messy and meandurative. As a result, the audience gets lost in the unraveling and Ozon’s well constructed house-ofcards comes down without any finesse or fascination whatsoever.

narrative an opportunity to sink in on its own merits. Having said that, Declan Quinn’s cinematography speaks volumes as does star Riz Ahmed’s performance. Co-star Kate Hudson seems to be somewhat of a black sheep here, though.

Steven Spielberg’S

top MovieS ‘Midnight’s Children’ Satya Bhabha and Siddharth play a pair of children who, born within moments of India gaining independence from Britain, grow up in the country that is nothing like their parent’s generation. Playing exclusively at Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR - 140 minutes) Joseph: The key to adapting a novel for the big screen is to retain the integrity of the original work without relaying each and every minute detail from the text. Unfortunately, Deepa Mehta ignored that very important rule when writing and directing “Midnight’s Children” - a new drama based on the book of the same title authored by Salman Rushdie, who was also involved in cowriting the film’s screenplay. The result is lovely to look at but that beauty only occasionally manifests itself from a place of more depth due to the movie’s insistence upon cramming 446 pages in 140 minutes.

FILM! SECTION

However, director Mira Nair’s heavy-handed approach makes the message just a tad bit too hard to swallow. As she did in 2006’s “The Namesake,” Nair hammers the story’s significance into the viewer rather than tapping it in just enough to then allow author Mohsin Hamid’s

“Lincoln” (2012): With third-time Oscar winner

‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ Riz Ahmed plays a young Pakistani man who, while chasing corporate success on Wall Street, finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis and the enduring call of his family’s homeland. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (R - 128 minutes) Stan: Caught between the proverbial ‘rock and a hard place’, Riz Ahmed as the central character delivers a powerful performance under the sure hand of director Mira Nair. That sure hand, with tendencies to overplay and over stage a few of the sequences, it did serve to solidify various elements of the overall plot, and yes, I was reminded of the style and pacing of episodic television. Probably the psychological link of a similar character portrait of star Kiefer Sutherland in this presentation of international intrigue, is reminiscent of Jack Bauer the TV series ‘24’. Some advice, sit back and go along for the 2 hour ride and let the narrative gingerly guide you through. Joseph: “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” tells a timely and relatively tense tale about American patriotism that is rarely told or even pondered.

Daniel Day-Lewis as their principal actor, Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner flesh out the person behind the presidential icon. “Saving Private Ryan” (1998): Spielberg’s World War II drama opens with what remains one of the most intense battle sequences ever filmed. “Jurassic Park” (1993): Dinosaurs rule again at an amusement park gone amok in Spielberg’s thrilling take on the Michael Crichton novel. “The Color Purple” (1985): The revered, intensely emotional Alice Walker novel made a fine vehicle for Spielberg and then-novice actors including Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.

2013 SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW (Reported by Jay Bobbin, ©Tribune Media Services)

Iron Man 3

May 3

(Reported by Jay Bobbin, ©Tribune Media Services) The lowdown: If you’ve dreamed of experiencing legendary novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald’s world in 3D, this will be your summer. The 1920sset tale of the mysterious and wealthy Jay Gatsby (now played by Leonardo DiCaprio), his love for the married Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), and the go-between they have in Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) – Gatsby’s neighbor and Daisy’s cousin – has intrigued readers and moviegoers for the better part of the past century, as indicated by previous film versions of this story. Anyone

The lowdown: The summer-movie season often launches with a pre-sold franchise, and especially after Robert Downey Jr.’s teaming with other superhero portrayers in last year’s juggernaut “Marvel’s The Avengers,” you can’t get much more pre-sold than this. And with (apparently) a 140-minute running time, the picture should pour on all the expected elements to guarantee any fan of such adventures a good time. Tony Stark and his ironclad alter ego get a new enemy in the Mandarin (Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, whose

who’s ever wanted to feel like part of the party will have a better chance than ever, thanks to the three-dimensional technology … which has had more time to be massaged, given filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s accident on the picture’s Australian set that contributed to the pushing back of the movie’s release from Christmas 2012. DiCaprio’s mystique would seem to make him a fine successor to past Gatsbys including Alan Ladd and Robert Redford. The cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Adelaide Clemens, Gemma Ward

(Reported by Jay Bobbin, ©Tribune Media Services) The lowdown: Exactly how does rough-andtough Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) come back from the dead? That’s the main question we have about this newest chapter in the literally high-octane action series, since the ads have made no secret about her return after her supposed demise in 2009’s “Fast & Furious.” Director Justin Lin executed an impressive – and hugely profitable – change-up of the franchise’s approach in “Fast Five,” so it’s little surprise he’s in charge again. This time, the pedal-to-the-metal team reunites to stop

The lowdown: You’d probably have to be a crew member aboard the starship Enterprise to get many advance details about this muchanticipated follow-up to the durable sci-fi franchise’s reboot, again done under the guidance of J.J. Abrams, who’s about to cross over onto “Star Wars” turf. Four years later – in movie-release time, at least – the newer incarnations of the “Trek” characters follow Kirk (Chris Pine) on his quest to find an enemy

a rival squad of fearless drivers whose intentions are much more sinister. And wouldn’t you just know Letty is a member … which should lead to a jaw-dropping moment for her former love Dom (Vin Diesel, also one of the picture’s producers) that, frankly, we can’t wait to see. Certain to up the action quotient even more this time is genre staple Jason Statham. The cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Luke Evans, Gina Carano, Shea Whigham

The lowdown: When you consider the enormous and (at the time, anyway) enormously surprising success of the original “Hangover,” it’s no shock that its studio would want to parlay it into additional chapters and profits. The catch is that ”The Hangover” wasn’t envisioned as an ongoing franchise, so keeping the sequels original – while still delivering the familiar goods – has been tricky, but it’s notable that there’s apparently no bachelor party or wedding involved this time.

evidently connected to the decimation of Starfleet. Devotees should be pleased to find more new faces added in familiar roles, as with Alice Eve as Dr. Carol Marcus. And Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock”) as … well, there was no confirmation as of this writing, but a lot of bets were riding on his playing the villainous Khan. The cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood, Alice Eve, Heather Langenkamp

presence all but guarantees some mighty fine acting here), and the trailers have indicated that Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) will be in more direct peril than ever … just the thing to make an Iron Man suit up for action again. Director Todd Phlliips and much of the original cast are back, and it can’t hurt that Bradley Cooper has been an Oscar nominee since his last “Hangover” … plus, Melissa McCarthy is on board now, and this type of raunch-infused humor is right up her alley. However, series creators Jon Lucas and Scott Moore didn’t write this one, and that could be good or bad. The cast: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong, Justin Bartha, Jamie Chung, Mike Tyson (as himself again), Melissa McCarthy, John Goodman, Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor

After Earth

(Reported by Jay Bobbin, ©Tribune Media Services) The lowdown: How many times can Superman be reinvented on film? Apparently, as many times as Warner Bros. cares to do it. After a couple of television series, one movie franchise and an attempt to start another, the company again puts a new sheen on the saga of Krypton’s favorite son. Henry Cavill (“The Tudors”) is the latest actor to don the cape and tights – and, as Metropolisbased alter ego Clark Kent, the business suit and spectacles – as director Zack Snyder and writer

The lowdown: “The Sixth Sense” was such a stunningly original movie, with a final twist that relatively few people saw coming, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has had a hard time duplicating the effect on audiences ever since. He’s taken a bit of a break since his last directing effort – the disastrously reviewed “The Last Airbender” – and staked his current fortunes on a father-son team previously proven potent, Will and Jaden Smith. Their characters in the story have the same

David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight Rises”) take what looks to be a grim slant on the legend. If you don’t know Cavill, you’ll certainly recognize many of the players who surround him … from Russell Crowe as our hero’s father Jor-El and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as adoptive parents Jonathan and Martha Kent, to Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White. The cast: Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Christopher Meloni, Michael Shannon, Ayelet Zurer, Richard Schiff

The lowdown: To his credit, Brad Pitt hasn’t always made the easiest choices in his film work – “Seven Years in Tibet”? “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”? – but if he’s looking to furnish a summer blockbuster, pitting (pardon the pun) himself against a world of zombies is a surefire way to go. The adaptation of Max Brooks’ novel casts him as a United Nations worker trying to keep his own family safe from an onslaught by the undead, while also taking a

(Reported by Jay Bobbin, ©Tribune Media Services) The lowdown: Getting this movie into production was about as much of an adventure as anything the finished product could put on the screen. The film almost was derailed totally when Disney wanted to contain the intended budget … but in the end, Johnny Depp stuck with his “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski, so the actor now adds loyal companion Tonto to his ever-growing list of unexpected characters. The heroic John Reid, aka The Lone Ranger, is played by Armie Hammer (with only one role to worry

about this time, after portraying the twin brothers in “The Social Network” with assists from another actor’s body and some great visual trickery). In a similar vein as the “Pirates” offerings, expect stunts designed to leave you laughing and gasping simultaneously, with antics atop a moving train among them. Whether this will revive the Western genre overall, though, is another story – as usual these days. The cast: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, William Fichtner, James Frain, James Badge Dale

The lowdown: If you’re familiar with “Pan’s Labyrinth” or even the past winter’s chiller “Mama” (which he executive-produced), you know Guilermo del Toro who often relies on startling and downright scary visuals to carry his fantasy ideas forward. Just imagine, then, what he can do with a story that finds invading aliens opposed by huge robots that are guided by pilots. Yes, indeed, that does set the mind whirling. Two staples of television’s “Sons of Anarchy” – Charlie

larger global view in trying to figure out how to stop the mass assault. In the director’s chair, indiefilm veteran Marc Forster also is an interesting choice for this; then again, he’s also sampled the world of James Bond (“Quantum of Solace”). Reportedly, Pitt and Forster didn’t always see eyeto-eye here; however, as long as its villains put on the bite effectively and humanity triumphs in the end. it’s all good. relationship, but a good many years from now, when their bid at resolving their estrangement ends up stranding them on the largely deserted Earth of the distant future. The elder man is critically injured in their craft’s crash landing, forcing the younger one to embark on a solo quest to summon help. Don’t count out young Jaden as someone who can hold the screen on his own when necessary; he was pretty effective, both in acting terms and at the box office, as the updated “Karate Kid.”

Hunnam and Ron Perlman – are among the humans caught up in the battle, as are Idris Elba and Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”). And if any movie this summer virtually screams “3D” and “IMAX” in terms of viewing options to take advantage of if possible, this would appear to be the one. However, stay aware that del Toro doesn’t stint on visuals that are gruesome as well as artistic, so do some doublethinking on having a big dinner before taking this in. FILM! SECTION

THE MOVIES OF SUMMER 2013 CONTINUES! By Stan Robinson As summer gets underway throughout the land, it brings along more than a handful of movies for every taste and genre on my short-list of 10 or so films, including director Marc Forster’s ‘World War Z’ a sci-fi theme story starring Brad Pitt; director Roland Emmerich’s action thriller ‘White House Down’ starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and the documentary ‘Pandora’s Promise’ on the history and future of nuclear power. Here’s a look at some of my ‘Most Anticipated’ movies for the summer of 2013! ‘After Earth’ ~ Director M. Night Shyamalan of ‘The Sixth Sense’ fame, presents a sci-fi adventure story of a young boy (Jaden Smith) and his estranged father (Will Smith) who crash land their space ship on an abandoned planet and must learn to survive. Surprising twist on a familiar theme. This father and son pairing could be ‘the coup’ of family entertainment, both literally and figuratively, as both of the Smith’s have delivered challenging characters over each of their last few films.

18

‘Fast & Furious 6’ ~ With the addition of Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson to this next installment in the franchise, it’s high on my list as Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) enlists the aid of Dom (Vin Diesel) and team May 8th, 2013 - May 14th, 2013

to help bring a rival gang, led by Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), to justice. In exchange for clear records, they must put an end to their schemes, no matter how personal the cost. Admittedly, I’m most drawn to the plight of Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, a former FBI agent turned rogue and his relationship with Mia Toretto (Michelle Rodriguez). ‘The Great Gatsby’ ~ I saw the play last year, and am looking forward to this latest screen version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Long Island, NY set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Will Carraway sees through the cracks of Gatsby’s nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await? You’ll have to watch to find out. I can’t wait to see this latest adaptation!

Heather Graham, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Mike Epps, and Mike Tyson. ‘The Internship’ ~ Starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, who also wrote the screenplay, is the story of two salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age and find their way into a coveted internship at the internationally famous Google. They then must compete with a group of young, techsavvy geniuses for a shot at employment. This could be that date movie for a hectic afternoon break.

‘Man of Steel’ ~ Director Zack Snyder presents this latest telling of the classic comic book theme of a young boy who learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind. I’ve always enjoyed visiting this theme throughout the years and am looking forward to this latest retelling of the legendary story.

‘The Hangover Part III’ ~ Ken Jeong is my favorite in this trilogy of adult behavior! This time around for the final episode, there’s no wedding and no bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? We’ll certainly find out when the group takes to the road, in the conclusion to the trilogy of mayhem, bad decisions, ‘Monsters University’ ~ This and excesses. Will they learn well-rounded, family friendly valuable life lessons? We shall animated story features a look see! Starring Bradley Cooper, at the relationship between Mike Melissa McCarthy, Jamie Chung, (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Zach Galifianakis, John Goodman, Goodman) during their days at AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Monsters University, where they weren’t necessarily the best of friends. Featuring the journey to that friendship and our favorite animated monsters during their young formative years. Should be good fun for the family, both theirs and ours!

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ ~ An avid ‘Trekkie’ since the 60s TV series, also looking forward to this next chapter with J.J. Abrams as director, as the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization as Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Starring Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Tom Archdeacon, Alice Eve, and Bruce Greenwood.

BEER!

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

GIRLS PINT OUT TURNS THREE industry. For example, Kim Jordan and Lauren Salazar, both at New Belgium, have gained even more influence in the industry, if that was possible. Both are considered major influencers in their particular area of expertise. Denise Jones is still brewing at Moylan’s and continues to make outstanding beers while letting her creative side blossom. Leah Huss is still manning the helm at Papago, and is actively involved in husband Jeff’s Huss Brewing Company project.

A little over three years ago, in this very spot, we wrote an article about women in beer. It was so big that it required two parts. Many of the women we mentioned are still very actively involved in the brewing

But one thing we wrote about in the second part of the article didn’t even exist in Arizona at the time. We sort of threw out the challenge to Arizona female beer drinkers to start a women’s beer organization and waited to see what happened. Well, it didn’t take long until Maureen Basenberg

decided the time was right to bring a chapter of Girls Pint Out to Phoenix. In fact, this organization just recently celebrated its third anniversary of supplying women with a testosterone free environment to discuss, learn about and enjoy beer. With a lot of support from Alyssa Medina and Kristine Bradley (BeerKristine to you social media types) this organization has not just survived, but has flourished. As they describe themselves, “We’re gals into grolsch. Ladies into lagers. Princesses into pilsners. Angels of ale. With a Southwestern twist!” I think it is easy to see that they do not take themselves too seriously. What they do is to provide opportunities for female beer drinkers to experience craft beer with other women and to

learn from each other while doing so. Clearly there are some major beer experts involved in this group, but there are also just as many novice craft drinkers involved. That is the real charm of the group… all are welcome and encouraged. Every event is tailored so that beer expert or not, there is something to be gained…all while making new friends. The group holds an average of two events a month. That could look like anything from a beer tasting to a tour at a local brewery or a pairing event that teaches women how to marry food and craft beer. Other events have included Happy Hours at local breweries and beer bars, Christmas cookies paired with Christmas beers,

BEER! SECTION and Cheese and Beer Pairings. One of the more ambitious projects last year was a “Style Series” of meetings held at different locations, each focusing in a particular beer style, frequently with an expert to present the style. Classes included Belgians, Porter, Ciders and more. Attendance is frequently 30-40 ladies and a good time is had by all. At any rate, the point of this is that Arizona Girls Pint Out is now three years old. They celebrated their anniversary, as has become their tradition, at Sun Up Brewery just last week. As has also become a tradition, brewmaster Uwe Boer produced a special beer which GPO gets to name. Past brews included a Maerzen which ended up with the name “May Milestone” to signify the first anniversary of the group. This year’s beer was a Honey Ale with tart cherries which ended up with the name, “Cherry Buzz.” Reflecting on the three years of this group partially means to look at the support the group has had throughout the years. For their first anniversary, the commemorative glass featured just seven sponsors, by year two it was up to nine and the three year anniversary included no less than eleven sponsors. I am certain more were willing, but there is only so much space on the glass. Sponsors for all three years include Sun Up Brewery, Papago Brewing, Four Peaks and World Class Beer. Although it should be noted that newer locations like O.H.S.O Eatery and NanoBrewery, Fate Brewing and World of Beer have been involved as long as they have been open.

As we have gone through the ages, women, from the time of Ninkasi, have always been actively involved in all aspects of the brewing process. Ninkasi is an ancient Sumerian Goddess, and her purview is beer. She brewed daily and supposedly produced some very fine beer, although there were no beer judges around back then, so

who knows. In South America, in the Amazon Rain Forest, women still chew cereal grain to introduce the enzyme ptyalin, spitting the chewed “mash” into buckets where the ptyalin begins the fermentation process. For early mankind this beer was a valuable dietary staple, a source of protein and vitamins. The tradition has continued and only women chew the grain to produce this unique beer. During the times of the Pharohs of Egypt, women brewed in a part of the kitchen called “the pure”. The beer produced was called “Hekt” and it was exported throughout the world. Through the times of Christ and beyond, women continued to brew beer. As recently as the 13th century, only 8 percent of the brewers in England were men. The women would brew in their home and put a broom handle over their door to show that they had extra beer for sale. Native African women would also put this “ale-stake” out to indicate beer available, except theirs was decorated with fresh vines and flowers. Throughout Medieval Europe women continued to play a large role in brewing, although in an act of chauvinism, they could only hold a license in their husband’s name. It was during these times that Saint Brigid through prayer and faith supposedly changed bath water in to beer for the benefit of a colony of thirsty lepers. So, based on this amazing history of women and beer, it is only logical that we have come to the point where one of the most active beer groups in the state revolves around women. Or, to quote Arizona Girls Pint Out founder, Basenberg, “Baby, we’re back. It’s time to celebrate our return.” Join the Girls Pint Out group for a Beer Brunch on Sunday, May 26th at 10:00 AM at Vintage 95 in Chandler or check them out at azgirlspintout.com. There are no membership fees to join. Everything is event based, just pay as you go. And by the way, it’s not Girls Pint Night Out, just Girls Pint Out.

By “King” James Swann Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s chat about one of the most anticipated beer releases this year so far, Stone “Enjoy By” IPA. So what is it that sets this brew apart from their regular IPA and why is it so special? Good question!

BEER! SECTION

STONE “ENJOY BY” IPA....OK!

First things first, this beer is all about freshness. Brewed specifically to be on shelves at carefully selected destinations around the county within one week of leaving Stone, the date built right into the label in big bold numbers spells it all out. Enjoy by 5.17.2013. That’s it, no ifs, ands or buts. Secondly, with a beer this fresh the hops play a huge role in the flavour profile and the brewery does not disappoint. With nine different hops in four separate additions ending in approximately 88 IBUs believe me when I say that this brew is bitter and it doesn’t stop there. Most of the hops are “late additions” in the boil kettle making for big bold character and extra zing. This version is also a double IPA - and kicking up the alcohol by volume to 9.4% really drives the point home. By the way, as you pour the beer, the aroma literally explodes and can be sensed from five feet away. One fresh west coast partyboy. Then of course, take Stone’s fun and interactive distribution method into account and you have the total package. Want this brew in your home town? You have to tell them! Via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other various social media sites, you must spread the word and tell them firsthand how badly you want it. How cool is that?

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

ARE YOU WORTHY? Only Stone Knows….. Until Next Week, Cheers!

GAME! SECTION 46

By GeorGe Dickie

The New York Mets’ youth movement was supposed to mean a few more years of misery for the Citi Field faithful, but Matt Harvey has given them a reason to believe better days aren’t that far off. In the season’s first month, the big righthander with the 95 mph fastball and wicked slider has given early indications he is indeed the staff ace the Mets envisioned when they drafted him seventh overall out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. Through three starts, the 24-year-old native of New London, Conn., posted a 3-0 record with an ERA of 0.82, giving up just six hits and six walks while striking out 25 in 22 innings. Included in that was a no-hitter he took into the seventh inning against the Minnesota Twins on April 13 that was broken up by a Justin Morneau solo home run. More importantly, he’s exhibited a poise, maturity and self-confidence on the mound that suggest a player years his senior and have drawn comparisons to another stalwart who wore a Met uniform, Hall of Famer Tom Seaver.

JUNE 12 Farewell My Love

The Milk Carton Kids are coming to the Crescent Ballroom (308 N. 2nd Ave. in Phoenix) on Friday, May 10th in support of their highly anticipated Anti- debut album The Ash & Clay which came out in March. The Milk Carton Kids formed in 2011 and consists of Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. While the most obvious musical reference is the classic folk revival sound of their twin acoustic guitars and close harmonies, the band both expands and contradicts that rich legacy with highly inventive guitar lines and intricately interwoven vocals. In their short time together the duo have already attracted a devoted and sizable following with the simple purity of their music, touring with a host of established acts (Old Crow Medicine Show, Punch Brothers, and more), appearing on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series, and charming audiences with their deadpan on-stage humor. For more information, check out www. crescentphx.com or www.themilkcartonkids.com.

INCREDIBLE MUSIC, DRINKS, & YOU!

On February 9, 1964 the Beatles sang four of their original songs (“All My Loving, “She Loves You,” “I Saw Her Standing There” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand”) on The Ed Sullivan Show. That hour revolutionized American popular music, and it would be impossible to imagine a pop or rock group that has not been influenced in some way by its aftermath. “1964…The Tribute” recreates a Beatles concert from those touring years, from onstage banter to Ringo’s head bob. These masters of their craft have the distinction from Rolling Stone Magazine as “The Best Beatles Tribute on Earth.” They have performed on numerous TV shows including Fox News, CBS Early Show, Imus in the Morning, PM Magazine and many other programs worldwide. John Lennon is portrayed by one of the group’s founding members Mark Benson. Drums and piano were Benson’s first instruments, but then at 17, he learned to play the guitar. He did an internship at a guitar repair shop where he learned to build, repair, and restore guitars. He went on to make guitars for Eddie Van Halen and Jackson Browne, and continues to maintain all of the instruments for 1964.

Paul McCartney is played by Graham Alexander. At age 9, Alexander chose a career in music after seeing a video of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. He learned to play the guitar, bass, drums and piano, and eventually formed his first band. His love for the Beatles led him to join Beatlemania Now. For the role of Sir Paul, the righthanded guitarist taught himself to play bass guitar with his left hand. George Harrison’s double is one of the group’s founding members Tom Work. The former member of a barbershop quartet, Popular Demand, has worked in over 20 musical theatre productions both in lead roles and behind the scenes as Producer/ Music Director. Ringo Starr’s mirror image is Bobby Potter. He started taking snare lessons in the 5th grade and got his first set of drums in the 7th. Later, Potter made it a personal goal to be like Ringo. He went on to play in numerous bands including two other Beatles tributes. Says Potter, “In the tribute world, you can’t get any closer or higher up than this for authenticity, style and sound in the same way the Beatles performed live.” Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets ($25 and $35) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

ALBUM REVIEWS Daughter Entrances With If You Leave, Xenia Dunford Offers Up Excellent His and Hers Daughter’s first full-length record, If You Leave, is musically and emotionally powerful. “Lifeforms” is a microcosm of the album’s content, with dreamy, ethereal guitars, singer Elena Tonra’s alternately husky and hauntingly lilting vocals, and razorsharp lyrics. “Human” zeroes in on the idea of valuing ourselves despite our shortcomings, and “Youth” combines languid down-tempo electric guitar with Tonra’s subtle delivery of lines like “And if you’re still breathing/You’re the lucky one/Cuz most of us/Are heaving through corrupted lungs,” to rapturous effect. “Still” makes the most noise, with epic guitars, hypnotic beats and orchestral flourishes carrying Tonra’s vocals as though through a battlefield. Hauntingly beautiful and intricately crafted, If You Leave is a fantastic record that will soothe your soul as it takes you on an exploratory journey of what it means to be human.

Singer-songwriter Xenia Dunford’s first full-length record, His and Hers, is a fantastic mix of folk, rock and Americana, and is a nice surprise since her previous EPs had more of a jazz vibe going on. The piano-led “Rhyme and Reason” showcases Dunford’s powerhouse honey-smoked vocals, while “1963”’s almost Dixieland-jazz-meets-folk sound will make you want to dance. The Americana-meets-bluegrass ditty “Best I’ve Ever Had” sees Dunford extolling the virtues of an ex, while the somber “Home Waits for Me” looks at how hard it is to start over. This album effortlessly combines a variety of genres with Dunford’s confident, energetic delivery to great effect, and Dunford scores points for her insight into the human condition. His and Hers is a great record.
