SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.
Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (‘Pain & Gain’) By Stan Robinson
“The basic story came from Miami newspaper articles in late 1999. We found the stories riveting and bazaar, awful and funny, and all sorts of things in between! We shopped the basic concept around, and people agreed that it was unique and different but didn’t want to make the movie. Michael Bay heard about it. He lives part time in Miami and I think he knew about the stories and said he’d attach himself to the project. Paramount then suddenly said, ‘That’s interesting’, and started the process. That was a long time ago, it took quite a while to bring the project together and on to the big screen. As for the reaction to screenings, most people walk out saying “that movie is crazy!” – Christopher Markus “You asked us to pitch you

on the story so here goes: It’s about three bodybuilders who are physically perfect, but their lives are inferior and they feel disenfranchised because of that. They wonder why these tubby smucks that they train all the time are so much richer and better off than they are when they look
so much worse! They decide, lets change that and set about to kidnap the richest guy they’re training in hopes of getting all of his money. They set themselves up to do just that. It’s a true story, and very bazaar in that it actually happened. It’s a series of tragic mistakes!

For screening reactions, Chris is right, most walk out of it with their nerves kind of fried!” – Stephen McFeely
By Joseph J. Airdo
“I think that [my character’s] condition is a very modern one, which is about trying to make sense of who you are when who you are is very complex and multilayered. I think that my generation has multiple different selves. We have many different influences from a very young age and have these sides of ourselves that are almost contradictions. I think that when you are younger and you are kind of coming of age and trying to figure out who you are, that can be really confusing and kind of disorienting. But I think that you get to a point later on in life when you can embrace that and realize that it is enriching. So I think that this character’s journey is one about not fitting neatly into any of the old boxes in this newly globalized world. His views are complicated. His
allegiances are complicated. His feelings are complicated. So it is about him trying to embrace that messiness and make peace with it. I feel that at least on paper he and I have some similarities. We both grew up between cultures and classes. But that was actually a mistake on my part because what this whole film is about is about not reducing people to the sum of their labels. And when I thought about it, I realized that he is completely different than me. [And through this experience, I learned] to try and be at peace with my own messiness and to cultivate my contradictions. I am more embracing of my own creative confusion rather than trying to make sense of who I am. It is other people’s job to try and make sense of who you are. And they always like to draw a neat outline around
you. It is up to us to not buy into that. Sometimes you can internalize the limitations that other people place on you. I think that the lesson for me is to not allow that to happen.” – Riz Ahmed

BET, YOU
‘42’ ~ This story about an American sports legend is definitely worth a look, despite the formula being done over and over again by Hollywood. Grade: A-
‘Disconnect’ ~ ‘Crash’ for the online generation. Minus a few plot flaws, it’s expertly directed, professionally acted and close-tohome disturbing. Grade: B+
‘Iron Man 3’ ~ Fans may be disappointed w/ the lack of “superhero” moments, but the intricate plot, humor & action create an entertaining film. Grade: B+
DIDN T KNOW! ‘Mud’ ~ Contender for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, etc. Dramatic, moving and well acted. A must see! Grade: A+
by Stan Robinson
‘Pain & Gain’ ~ Non-stop entertainment from opening scene to closing frame. This unbelievable true story makes ones heck of a dark action comedy. Grade: B+ ‘The Big Wedding’ ~ The highlight; Heigl throws up on DeNiro. Why do stars choose these bad projects? Props to Keaton & Sarandon for saving this mess. Grade: C-

WHAT TO EAT AND WHERE TO GO IN BEAUTIFUL TUCSON By Jim Gressinger Like most Tucsonans, in the winter we have a lot of guests, mostly because of our gorgeous Southern Arizona weather that time of year. Upon arrival, the first thing they typically want to know is: “Where’s the best Mexican restaurant?” The second thing they want to know is: “What should we do tomorrow?” This week’s column answers the first question. I will address the second next week. There are dozens of Mexican restaurants in Southern Arizona. These two are among the best in Tucson. Presidio district so it’s only a few blocks from the most historic area of Tucson. Enjoy a fine meal, then take a stroll to see the partially restored old Spanish fort; the Tucson Museum of Art & Historic Block; and Old Town Artisans (9 galleries & La Cocina Cantina). Ask the bartender to mix you one of their custom margaritas. We rate El Charro downtown 4.5 Saguaros. Bon Appetit! Jim Gressinger lives in Tucson and is publisher of SouthernArizonaGuide.com, a website that includes his Dining & Lodging Reviews as well as his recommendations for the BEST Things to See & Do in Southern Arizona. You can follow his weekly adventures on his Southern Arizona Guide blog at TucsonCitizen.com and/or subscribe to his website FREE and receive his weekly email newsletter.
Café PocaCosa: downtown Tucson. Owner/Chef Suzana is a master of Mexican cuisine. The daily menu is on a chalkboard and your server will describe each dish in mouthwatering detail. If you have never been here before, we recommend you order La Plata. Within easy walking distance is our restored train depot wherein you will find our Transportation (railroad) Museum; Maynard’s Market & Kitchen; and across the street the historic Hotel Congress (excellent night club) where John Dillinger & his gang were caught by Tucson Police in 1934. We rate Café PocaCosa 5-Saguaros: Best of the Best.

El Charro Café: downtown on Court Street. Established in 1922, this family-owned Mexican restaurant is superb. It’s located in an old house in the May 8th, 2013 - May 14th, 2013
