When Mary’s husband of 26 years

passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked “Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” When Mary replied, “I don’t know.” Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene it’s becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. That’s where Great Expectations Scottsdale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Expectations has perfected a suite of matchmaking services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Unlike other dating services that entrust applicants to input their

own data, Great Expectations professionals meet every potential client in person to interview and screen each applicant. Recently, Great Expectations Scottsdale announced Tammy Smith, who has been with the company since 1998, as their new Center Director. Tammy has had the pleasure of meeting and matching multiple couples through the years. “At Great Expectations we personally meet and interview each member so they are pre-screened before they can join. We also run background checks on each member. When you join an online dating site, you don’t know who you’re connecting with,” says Tammy. “We find it’s best for our clients to not be surprised by who they’re meeting. We take our own photos and we provide videotaped conversations as well. We will be as involved in your experience as much as you want us to be, acting as a personal dating liaison and coaching you along the way.” In addition to pre-screening each potential client, Great Expectations provides ample opportunities for members to meet like-minded singles in whichever environment they’re most comfortable. “We hold a variety of fun, safe, singles events to help get you out into the Great Expectations community,” says Ashley AZWeeklyMagazine.com

It’s safe, private, experienced matchmaking made easy. Take the first step today. Mary & Gene have the same thoughts as many of our success stories about Great Expectations: “It worked for us! If it wasn’t for Great Expectations and its staff we wouldn’t have found each other!” And to anyone considering joining Great Expectations they add: “What do you have to lose?”

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

About the Film

Columnists STAN ROBINSON

FILM! SECTION

FILM!

,

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insight of an insider. He has more than 22 years of experience in media production, serving as an assistant director and transportation captain for numerous films. As a result, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes wisdom to survey a motion picture’s technical attributes and considers the obstacles that had to be overcome in order to communicate a story cinematically.

Joseph J. Airdo

Randy Montgomery represents the average-albeit-informed moviegoer. Holding a master’s degree in counseling and education, he works in media and marketing. Randy’s perspective tends to be grounded in his emotional reaction to a motion picture, often basing his opinions on a unique combination of a film’s surface entertainment value its ability to affect him on an even deeper level.

Joseph J. Airdo approaches film criticism from an analytical perspective. He holds a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Therefore, Joseph may sometime seem as though he is hard to please but his head is always processing a motion picture’s existential purpose as well as its real life implications and applications.

‘The Iceman’ Michael Shannon plays a man who, appearing to be living the American dream as a devoted husband and father, is a ruthless killer-forhire. Other stars include Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans and David Schwimmer. (R - 106 minutes) Stan: Exemplifying the truism, its just business, Shannon excels as a very devout family man and an emotionally detached contract killer who’s very good at what he does. Joseph: Solidifies Shannon’s status as a true powerhouse performer, painting a portrait of a very complex character who is chillingly dangerous yet curiously charismatic.

‘Love is All You Need’

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

Trine Dyrholm plays a hairdresser who, having lost her hair to cancer and discovering that her husband is having an affair, travels to Italy for her daughter’s wedding and meets a widower (Pierce Brosnan) who still blames the world for the loss of his wife. (R - 116 minutes)

Chris Pine reprises his role of Captain Kirk who, after the crew of the Enterprise finds an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction (Benedict Cumberbatch). (PG-13 132 minutes)

Stan: A film with lessons for us all on coping with, and certainly moving forward from, adversities, misfortunes, and tragic elements of living life to find happiness. Randy: Overlook the predictable plot because of the likable performances by Dyrholm & Brosnan. An entertaining, dramatic, heartfelt comedy.

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo on “Breakthrough Entertainment” - 11 a.m. Saturdays on KPHX 1480 AM and 2 p.m. Thursdays on BreakRadioShow.com

14

May 15th, 2013 - May 21st, 2013

Joseph: Fun for Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike thanks to an easily accessible yet engagingly elaborate theme and an emotionally heightened performance from Cumberbatch.

FILM! SECTION

‘Erased’

‘Blancanieves’

Aaron Eckhart plays an ex-CIA agent who discovers that he and his daughter have been marked for termination as part of a wide-reaching international conspiracy. A dangerous game of cat-and-mouse ensues as he tries to outsmart his hunters and uncover the truth. (R - 104 minutes)

Maribel Verdú plays a young woman who learns the art of her father - a famous bullfighter - but is hated by her evil stepmother (Ángela Molina) so she ran away with a troupe of dwarves and becomes a legend. (PG-13 - 105 minutes)

Joseph: Initially exciting, intriguing and unabashedly fun, but eventually imitates something more intellectually stimulating, becoming convoluted, confusing and lackluster.

Joseph: An enthralling, enchanting and entrancing celebration of cinema, Spanish culture, fairy tales and storytelling. Bold, beautiful and a bona fide masterpiece.

Harrison Ford’s

Top Movies “Morning Glory” (2010):

With seemingly minimal effort, Ford is absolutely hilarious as a veteran television newsman who growls his resistance over becoming a morning show co-anchor. “Presumed Innocent” (1990): Ford underplays ideally as an attorney accused of killing a colleague with whom he had an extramarital affair. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981): With bullwhip in hand, Ford made Indiana Jones an instant icon. “Star Wars” (1977): Ford blasted off into stardom as reluctant hero Han Solo in the saga’s first fantasy, later rechristened the fourth chapter.

‘Something in the Air’ Clement Metayer plays a graduating high school student in Paris who finds himself pulled into ever more dangerous political protests by the people around him - especially his radicalized girlfriend (Lola Créton). (NR - 122 minutes) Joseph: Suddenly comes to a screeching halt after a strong start, losing its focus swapping out dramatic intensity for a host of characters that lack depth or direction.

The Source Family’ Filmmakers Maria Demopoulos and Jodi Wille examine a family whose members were the darlings of the Sunset Strip until their communal living, outsider ideals and spiritual leader’s 13 wives became an issue with local authorities. (NR - 98 minutes) Joseph: Demopoulos and Wille water down what could have been a fascinating, unsettling and even eye-opening exploration into a prosaic parade of tedious talking heads.

Steven Spielberg’S

top MovieS “Lincoln” (2012): With third-time Oscar winner

Daniel Day-Lewis as their principal actor, Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner flesh out the person behind the presidential icon. “Saving Private Ryan” (1998): Spielberg’s World War II drama opens with what remains one of the most intense battle sequences ever filmed. “Jurassic Park” (1993): Dinosaurs rule again at an amusement park gone amok in Spielberg’s thrilling take on the Michael Crichton novel. “The Color Purple” (1985): The revered, intensely emotional Alice Walker novel made a fine vehicle for Spielberg and then-novice actors including Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.

ORB COMES FULL CIRCLE Orb’s rider Joel Rosario gave his favorite horse A Perfect Trip and what a year Rosario has had. This winter he won the $6 million World Cup in Dubai, was the leading rider at Keeneland, and in the first day of this Churchill meet he won with 5 of his first 7 mounts. The word orb, from the Latin orbis ‘circle’, is a name for a round object, but the happiest round object in the Churchill Down’s winner’s circle Saturday was Orb’s trainer Shug McGaughey after his star won the Kentucky Derby. Orb broke a bit awkward, then raced 4 wide on the first turn, was pushed 6 wide near the 3-furlong marker, got the leader in midstretch, then drew clear to win by a widening 2 and a half lengths. Sent off as the tepid 5-1 favorite, Orb got fast splits to close into. He had to come from 16th in the 19-horse field and they went fast up front. Early leader Palace Malice carved out a :22.57, :45.33 and 1:09.80 pace before faltering to run 12th. The half-mile time of :45.33 was the second fastest in history and the three-quarter split of 1:09.80 was the fourth fastest ever. But with that said, Palace Malice ran much better than the other runners that were prominent early. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th early runners finished 14th, 18, and 17th respectively. Orb’s final time of 2:02.89 was solid considering the sealed sloppy track. Last year I’ll Have Another got the Derby final time in 2:01 4/5 on a fast track and recorded a 101 Beyer Speed Figure. Orb was credited with a solid 104 Beyer. For McGaughey, this is not his first rodeo. He has been training for 34 years and has conditioned champion after champion. This was his seventh Derby starter; his first ran in 1984. McGaughey: “The way it’s going to change my life is, I’m not going to have to worry about it anymore - Because I’ve worried about it for a while. And I might not let anybody know that, but inside, that thought was always there.”

The future is super bright for Orb and he only figures to improve. Orb is bred to get the classic distance on top as his sire has sired successful major winners at a mile and a quarter like Life and Ten and Funny Moon. His dam won at a mile and half on turf and her sire won the 1990 Derby and the BC Classic. Orb reportedly came out of the race no worse for wear and has rebounded from all his efforts this year in similar style. As far as trouble was concerned in the Derby, a few horses had hard trips. Oxbow got caught up in a fast pace and Will Take Charge was forced to steady sharply at the top of the lane. Only a handful of Derby runners will follow him to Baltimore for the Preakness at Pimlico on May 18. Sixth finisher Oxbow and 8th finisher Will Take Charge, both trained by D. Wayne Lukas, will likely be set for the second leg of the Triple Crown. The 17th finisher Goldencents is likely and Mylute (5th) and Itsmyluckyday (15th) are possible. Second finisher Golden Soul will likely skip the Preakness and head to the Belmont. Chad Brown’s student Normany Invasion will pass on the Preakness and will point to the Travers Stakes at Saratoga this summer. Todd Pletcher will not take any of his 5 Derby starters to Pimlico. Orb will be a solid favorite in the Preakness, no matter who shows up to challenge – and his destiny just might be…to join the previous 11 Triple Crown winners.

Bob Schneider has built his career as a working-class musician - and as a result, has an institution of faithful followers across the country with a mega fan-base epicenter in Austin, Texas. Schneider flourished as an independent artist releasing five albums and still continues to push himself in a multitude of creative directions, now with the beguiling melodies of “Lovely Creatures.” Schneider’s fans have come to expect the unexpected and give him free rein to explore the music that he loves: funk, pop, bluegrass, jazz, soul, blues, hip-hop, and good oldfashioned bar rock raunchy enough to make you flush and emotional enough to choke you up.

BIG WEEK, SMALL BREWERIES We are in the middle of what can only be described as one of the most important weeks of the year, American Craft Beer Week. This is when we celebrate all that is good about craft beer, which is just about anything. Let’s start by reading the official press release from the Brewers Association. From May 13-19, craft beer connoisseurs and beginners alike will come together

for the eighth annual celebration of American Craft Beer Week (ACBW). With the tagline “Big Week, Small Breweries,” ACBW is an opportunity to toast the more than 2,400 small and independent American craft brewers who continue to make the U.S. the world’s most diverse brewing destination. Once again, ACBW celebrations are expected to be held across all 50 states. “The popularity of American Craft Beer Week is indicative of the craft beer renaissance that continues to captivate the U.S.,” said Julia Herz, publisher of CraftBeer.com and craft beer program director at the Brewers Association. “This week is

about uniting for a common cause: support and celebration of our nation’s small and independent brewers and the millions of beer lovers who have helped evolve an industry and put the U.S. on the brewing map.” New for 2013 is the American Craft Beer Week National Toast. For the first time ever, ACBW will be commemorated by a simultaneous toast. At 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 16, small brewers and craft beer lovers nationwide will raise a glass of their favorite craft brewed beer to toast ACBW and the delicious beer

that it celebrates. To find a toast location near you, visit the official American Craft Beer Week events page, hosted by CraftBeer.com. Untappd, the mobile-based social network that connects breweries with craft beer lovers, is also offering an American Craft Beer Week Badge for users who checkin during ACBW events. Additionally, craft beer fans from across the country can sign the American Craft Beer Week Manifesto, pledging their support to craft beer and their love for “the artisans who approach their craft with originality, dedication and passion.” From tap takeovers and tasting tours to food pairings and festivals, ACBW will be celebrated in many ways across the U.S. So what does all that mean to us here in Arizona? Plenty. We have already had a couple of days of amazing events, beer dinners, pint nights, special tappings and more. But the best is yet to come. Starting Wednesday night you can enjoy the introduction of a new craft can menu at Casey Jones Grill on Bell Road, or an Oskar Blues Night at Draw 10 on Washington. Whole Foods on Mayo will have a special tapping of Anderson Valley Beers including the new Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout. Like Cigars? Fox Cigar Bar will have some special pairings of Oskar Blues and their fine selection of outstanding stogies. If bikes are more your thing, stop by Boulders on Broadway and enjoy some great deals on craft cans followed by a night ride. And this is just on Wednesday night. Thursday starts early as Mellow Mushroom in CityNorth taps a dozen rare beers starting at 3:00 PM. Taking it to the East Valley, Whole Foods in Chandler will have a promo featuring Grand Canyon beers. In Phoenix Central, you can enjoy a Bell’s Brewery Promo at Cave and Ives. Finally, you can wrap up your Thursday at Flanny’s in Tempe as New Belgium takes over the taps with 20 beers, featuring the largest collection of Lips of Faith beers ever on tap in Arizona, including the two newest releases. At 5:00 PM various bars and breweries will be participating in a Coast to Coast Toast to

celebrate craft beer. Friday keeps the ball rolling with the “Show us Your Cans” craft can charity pub crawl. Start at Bison Witches, move on to Handlebar and Grill and finish up at World of Beer. Bring some two cans of food to donate and your first beer is just a penny. Whole Foods Tempe has a Left Hand promo, while Deli Sports Bar in Peoria offers a special event featuring Ska Mexican Logger. Wedge and Bottle will have some incredible beer and cheese pairings, but then they always put together some incredible events. Finally, Papago Brewing will get us ready for the big event with an Ameri-CAN Beer Festival Pre-game Party from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Look for plenty of great canned beers and plenty of supplier reps to hang out and chat with. Saturday ends American Craft Beer Week and we do it up right in Arizona. The Third Annual Ameri-CAN Craft Beer Festival has become nationally recognized and has grown every year. Held at the Scottsdale Civic Plaza, this event will feature over 50 breweries and 200 beers, many not regularly available in our state. Not only will this event feature virtually all of the amazing craft cans we can regularly purchase in our state, but look for beers from these great breweries as well: Lost Rhino, Uncommon Brewers, Hopworks Urban Brewery, Bohemian Brewery, Tallgrass Brewing, Two Brothers, Golden Road, Cigar City, Revolution and so many more. The event kicks off with VIP admission at Noon and regular admission at 1:00. This is considered one of the top three festivals in the state and should not be missed. Check out details at www.cannedcraftbeerfest.com. American Craft Beer Week is a national celebration of craft beer and as Arizona becomes a bigger and bigger force in the craft beer world we are getting more involved. If you have ever tried a craft beer, come on out to at least one of these events and help support our state as we continue to grow our craft beer culture.

By “King” James Swann Hello again craft beer lovers, today lets chat about the AMERI-CAN Beer Festival entries, gold medal winners and my choices. How different are they? Let’s see…. In the American Pale Ale category, the judges chose Sweet as Pacific Ale from Good Life Brewing. This I must disagree with as my clear choice is Devil’s Ale from SanTan Brewing Company.

BEER! SECTION

AMERICAN WINNERS

Next up in the English Pale Ale category the judges chose Ska Brewing Special ESB and on this I must agree. Fabulous brew considering not many Americans brew a good English pale/bitter style. The next category, Wheat Ales was won by Revolution Brewing with their Bottom Up Ale. My choice here would have been Mudshark Brewing Full Moon Wit. Absolutely love this brew. Moving on to Stouts and Porters the judges chose Zonker Stout from Snake River Brewing although my choice would have gone to Eugene Porter from the aforementioned Revolution Brewing. The next category, Ambers and Browns was won by Grand Canyon Brewing and their Sunset Amber. Home town boy comes good! So now we are up to Blonde Ales and Lagers. The winner in this category is our own Four Peaks and their wonderful Sun Brew Koslch Style Ale. I must say that in this category I could not agree more BUT, if SanTan Brewing were canning their Sunspot Gold this happy ending may have gone a different way.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Now to the powerhouse category, IPAs. This was an odd one. I surely would have picked last year’s winner, Lumberyard IPA but for some reason this go round they entered it in the American Pale category. Anyhoo, the winner was Hop Notch from Uinta Brewing via Salt Lake City, Utah? Funny, I guess not everyone in that state is crazy after all! Don’t you just love happy endings? Cheers!

Alaskan Brewing Company was awarded two gold and one bronze medals in the 14th Annual Commercial Craft Brewing Competition of the West Coast Brew Fest. The awards were announced this week, and the winning beers will be poured for attendees of the Brew Fest, on Saturday, May 18, at Miller Park in Sacramento. Alaskan Brewing Company’s Summer Ale was awarded a gold medal in the “Mixed” category. Summer Ale is a Kolsch style beer, released every year as a seasonal, and perfect for warm weather and outdoor grilling. Another seasonal, the spring-released Alaskan Black IPA, was awarded the gold medal in the “Porter/Black IPAs” category. Black IPA has come out the past two years during Alaska’s spring breakup, and combines the crispness of an IPA with the rich malted taste of a porter or stout. One of Alaskan’s Limited Edition Pilot Series beers, the Imperial Red, was recognized with a

bronze medal in the “Amber Ale” category. Imperial Red features a full flavor profile balancing big malt flavor with intense hop characters. Alaskan Brewing has been honored many times in the West Coast Brew Fest, including recent gold medal winners Alaskan Birch Bock and Alaskan Barley Wine. For 2013, over 150 Beers were entered in over 18 categories.

Both Black IPA and Imperial Red were seasonal or limited releases earlier this year, so they may be getting hard to find. But Alaskan Summer Ale has just been released for the summer season, and can be found throughout Alaskan Brewing’s 14 state distribution area. Finding Alaskan Beer in your area is as easy as checking the Alaskan Brew Finder.

This summer, Odell Brewing will release its first variety 12 pack, Montage. The new package will feature two brewery flagships, a seasonal offering, and a new brew, Loose Leaf American Session Ale. Loose Leaf was developed on the brewery’s five barrel pilot system. The Odell brewers wanted to create a beer that was lighter in color, lower in alcohol content, but also flavorful and distinct. The final recipe is crisp and balanced with lower IBU’s and a bright hop aroma. At 4.5% ABV, it’s delicate and refreshingly drinkable with a clean finish.

release pilot system inspired brew. Odell Brewing will release Montage in Arizona in June. Those eager to try Loose Leaf American Session Ale can enjoy a special tapping of the beer at 6pm on May 29th at Papago Brewing.

GAME! SECTION 50

By GeorGe Dickie

In what has been an uneven season thus far, the Los Angeles Dodgers know that at the very least they can count on their ace. Clayton Kershaw is once again doing his thing at Chavez Ravine, leading a Dodgers pitching staff that many think should be good enough to get the team back to the postseason. As April turned to May, the 25-year-old lefty was among the National League leaders in most major categories, including ERA (1.73), strikeouts (47), WHIP (walks and hits to innings pitched: .91) and BAA (batting average against: .181). That he sported a modest 3-2 wonlost record at this writing spoke more to the anemic L.A. offense (82 runs through 25 games, 14th in the NL) and porous team defense (19 errors through 25 games, tied for third most in the NL). And after those two losses in mid-April, the Dallas native returned to his old dominant self. In an April 28 start at Dodger Stadium against the lumber-heavy Milwaukee Brewers, Kershaw allowed just four hits and no walks while striking out 12 in a 2-0 Los Angeles victory. At one point, the 2011 Cy Young Award winner retired 18 consecutive Brewers.

ALBUM REVIEWS Joe Satriani’s Unstoppable Momentum is False Advertising, Eluvium Creates Masterful Nightmare Ending Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani’s latest release gets points for trying new things, but it’s a letdown. Unstoppable Momentum has a few trademark Satriani songs—the title track and the operatic rock of “Lies and Truths” are pretty rockalicious—but when it starts trying its hand at funk and snyth rock, it stumbles big time. The piano flourishes and trumpet sections on “Three Sheets to the Wind” are wildly out of place, “Jumpin’ In” isn’t the best attempt at funk, and the keys on “The Weight of the World” will have you thinking about Casio keyboards. Satriani takes some risks here, but this experiment has little momentum and is anything but unstoppable. Nightmare Ending, the latest offering from Eluvium—a.k.a. Matthew Cooper—however, is perfect. This double album feels like an epic film score that reaches into your heart, stirs your soul and takes you on an unimaginable journey. The melodic sway of “Don’t Get Any Closer” is reminiscent of This Will Destroy You’s “The Mighty Rio Grande” and the rolling waves of sound on “Warm” enfold you in their embrace. “Unknown Variation” adds breathtaking distortion to the picture, a la composer/ electronic artist BT’s recent albums Nuovo Morceau Subrosa and If the Stars are Eternal so are You and I, while the lush piano interludes “Caroling” and “Impromptu” are nice surprises. Cooper has created a spellbinding masterpiece that makes dissonant sounds beautiful, and apart from Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan whispersinging on the album’s closer “Happiness,” the music speaks for itself. Nightmare Ending is arguably 2013’s best album.
