When Mary’s husband of 26 years

passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked “Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” When Mary replied, “I don’t know.” Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene it’s becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. That’s where Great Expectations Scottsdale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Expectations has perfected a suite of matchmaking services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Unlike other dating services that entrust applicants to input their

own data, Great Expectations professionals meet every potential client in person to interview and screen each applicant. Recently, Great Expectations Scottsdale announced Tammy Smith, who has been with the company since 1998, as their new Center Director. Tammy has had the pleasure of meeting and matching multiple couples through the years. “At Great Expectations we personally meet and interview each member so they are pre-screened before they can join. We also run background checks on each member. When you join an online dating site, you don’t know who you’re connecting with,” says Tammy. “We find it’s best for our clients to not be surprised by who they’re meeting. We take our own photos and we provide videotaped conversations as well. We will be as involved in your experience as much as you want us to be, acting as a personal dating liaison and coaching you along the way.” In addition to pre-screening each potential client, Great Expectations provides ample opportunities for members to meet like-minded singles in whichever environment they’re most comfortable. “We hold a variety of fun, safe, singles events to help get you out into the Great Expectations community,” says Ashley AZWeeklyMagazine.com

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

About the Film

Columnists STAN ROBINSON

FILM! SECTION

FILM!

,

RANDY MONTGOMERY

Stan Robinson’s reviews reflect the insight of an insider. He has more than 22 years of experience in media production, serving as an assistant director and transportation captain for numerous films. As a result, Stan uses his behind-the-scenes wisdom to survey a motion picture’s technical attributes and considers the obstacles that had to be overcome in order to communicate a story cinematically.

Joseph J. Airdo

Randy Montgomery represents the average-albeit-informed moviegoer. Holding a master’s degree in counseling and education, he works in media and marketing. Randy’s perspective tends to be grounded in his emotional reaction to a motion picture, often basing his opinions on a unique combination of a film’s surface entertainment value its ability to affect him on an even deeper level.

Joseph J. Airdo approaches film criticism from an analytical perspective. He holds a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Therefore, Joseph may sometime seem as though he is hard to please but his head is always processing a motion picture’s existential purpose as well as its real life implications and applications.

‘Dead Man’s Burden’

‘The English Teacher’

Clare Bowen and Barlow Jacobs play siblings who, after becoming reacquainted in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, are torn between a desire to reconcile with the only family they have left and their clashing convictions. (NR - 93 minutes)

Julianne Moore plays an English teacher who convinces her former pupil (Michael Angarano) to produce his play at her high school after he fails to succeed as a playwright in New York while the young man’s overbearing father (Greg (Kinnear) pressures him to attend law school instead. (NR - 93 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Jared Moshe aptly presents the essence of lifestyle, social, economic, and the deeply routed mindset of the late 1860s. The ensemble cast, with exceptional portrayals by Clare Bowen and Barlow Jacobs, and the time-period production value, serve as the fuel that transports us through a portal to the past. As the story unfolds, with an admirable unbiased leaning to either side, the ideologies and convictions of the country dividing philosophies at the time are laid bare. As closing credits rolled, I was reminded of a statement by historians that purported, the real cure of the repercussions of that time is time, generations of time.

Joseph: Despite some fairly clunky dialogue and an occasional outrageous occurrence that fails to yield logical consequences thereby making it almost impossible to accept this story as taking place in the real world, “The English Teacher” is a delightful dramedy about replacing life’s preordained endings with ones you write yourself. The film never quite reaches its poignancy potential, underplaying themes involving teachers resigning themselves to living their lives vicariously through students and the impact that artists’ creative license have on their family and friends, but it is adequately amusing throughout and concludes in a cleverly eloquent and surprisingly significant way.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

‘Frances Ha’ Greta Gerwig plays a woman living in New York (despite not really have an apartment) who apprentices for a dance company (despite not really being a dancer) and throws herself headlong into her dreams (even as their possible reality dwindles). (R - 86 minutes) Joseph: “Frances Ha” will appeal greatly to any and all lovers of French new wave cinema. It will also appeal to those who find actress Greta Gerwig to be incredibly charming. However, those who have never understood the unfounded fascination with Gerwig may be more annoyed than amused. And although, as a student of film, I appreciate the style in which writer/director Noah Baumbach has packaged this particular story, Gerwig’s performance is - as it always is - so irritatingly idiosyncratic that the movie’s admirable aspects become mostly moot. Gerwig’s insufferable pretentiousness ruins an otherwise promising motion picture.

‘Fast & Furious 6’ Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as a DSS federal agent who enlists the aid of Brian (Paul Walker) and Dom (Vin Diesel) to, in exchange for clear records; help bring a rival gang (Luke Evans) to justice. (PG-13 130 minutes) Randy: How many is too many? Five? Six? Internet research shows there will be at least one more installment in this super popular series. For me, five was enough. There is plenty of action, a lot of humor and too many chase sequences to count, but we have seen it all before. Cut a few of the long running scenes, all of the unnecessary dialogue, remove two of the false endings and then you may have a winner. Joseph: It will be interesting to see how “Fast & Furious 7” - which has been fast-tracked for a release next summer - will up the ante. After all, where do you possibly go after letting a tank run amok on the wrong side of the freeway and showing how a handful of cars can take down the largest aircraft in the world? Needless to say, “Fast & Furious 6’s” two-tiered last lap is insanely intense, satisfying fans that could care less about trivial things like gravity, maximum velocity and impact tolerance. It could have benefited from a couple of smaller-scale action sequences to break up the mid-portion’s melodrama, though.

The person who did the voice of Yoda from ‘Star Wars’, Miss Piggy, the Cookie Monster, and Bert from ‘Bert and Ernie’ was Frank Oz!

“Invictus” (2009): Working again with director Clint Eastwood, Freeman is very credible as then-President Nelson Mandela. “The Bucket List” (2007): Freeman and Jack Nicholson do likable and effective work as cancer patients trying to fulfill their remaining wishes. “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994): One of Freeman’s most iconic performances fuels this adaptation of Stephen King’s story about a deep friendship forged in prison. “Lean on Me” (1989): An excellent Freeman plays Joe Clark, a real-life inner-city principal determined to improve conditions at his school.

“Gran torino” (2008) It didn’t turn out to be his last directing project, as Eastwood said it would be then, but he’s also in prime acting form as a war veteran forced to face his prejudices. “Million dollar Baby” (2004) For all the drama’s boxing sequences, Eastwood draws superb subtlety – earning his own Oscar as director in the process – from the picture’s other two big Academy Award winners, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. Not the least of them is the sister (Elizabeth Banks) he never knew he had.

9 p.m. on STARZ A high-school reunion has five old friends taking stock of their lives in this 2011 comedy, which steers clear of the cliches common to such a plotline. GREG FRETZ MEMORIAL from 21st Amendment. The first ever canned barleywine was an outstanding beer and the limited amount available was gone in fifteen minutes. Food was plentiful as the parking lot featured outstanding food trucks and stands. Included were Scottsdale favorite The Brat Haus serving regular and spicy brats, giving people a little idea of what to expect when they visit the restaurant. Also serving was AZBarbeque Catering, a branch of one of the local barbecue clubs. Their fare was excellent and some of their side dishes, especially the corn and baked beans were stand-alone heroes without even touching the meat. But none of this was the real

story of the day. Around 4:00 in the afternoon word started spreading that the Arizona craft beer community had lost an icon. It was somehow appropriate that almost all of the local craft beer people, industry and consumer, were together when we heard the news that Greg Fretz, co-founder of Phoenix Ale Brewery and namesake of Fretzy’s Unfiltered Ale, had succumbed to the throat cancer that he had been fighting since October of 2012. Fretzy, as he was known, was such an integral part of our beer culture that it seems fitting to include a brief review of an outstanding festival as part of a tribute to him. That is what this article is really about…paying Continued On Page 38

As American Craft Beer Week drew to a close on Saturday, craft beer aficionados celebrated with an event that is rapidly becoming one of the top two or three beer events in the state, Ameri-CAN Canned Craft Beer Festival. Put on by Landon Evans and his amazing team at HDE Agency in close cooperation and hosted by SanTan Brewing, this festival features the best of craft beer in cans from across the country. What really makes it special is the large number of beers that come from suppliers not normally distributed in the state. The fact that Cigar City, 21st Amendment, Sun King, Golden Road and so many more send not only cans for the event but representatives to pour really highlights the national status of this event.

The VIP sections was well staffed and the first thing many people saw as they entered at the North Entrance was the oasis created by Arizona Brewery Tours to help promote their services providing regularly scheduled tours of the best Arizona breweries. Looking over the big hill there was a sea of tents, each stockpiled with excellent beers. The beer geeks made directly for those breweries not typically found in our state, while others headed straight for beers they recognized, those with names like Grand Canyon, Breckenridge, Big Sky, Abita and Oskar Blues. No matter where you started or where you finished there was plenty of great beer. Off to the east side of the event, World of Beer sponsored the Rare Beer Tent which lived up to its name with Uncommon Brewers, Payette and more. tribute to one of our own. Most people only know Fretzy from his recent work at Phoenix Ale, but his background in beer goes much deeper. Fretzy started work in the adult beverage world in 1994 as a chain sales representative for what was then called Arizona Beverage Distributing Company. That led him to a job with Gambrinus Company, now known for beers like Bridgeport and TrumerPils. In 1998 he took a job that would impact him for the rest of his life. Hired by Pyramid Breweries as a District Sales Manager, he had the opportunity to meet George Hancock, who at the time was President of Pyramid. Fretzy spent several years at Pyramid, earning promotions along the way, until he ended up taking a job with Deschutes Brewery as their Southwest Market Manager where he became more and more integrated into the growing beer community in Arizona. By then George Hancock had left Pyramid and had moved onto a different project, but he remained in contact with Fretz. Few knew of this friendship until Fretz and Hancock announced their partnership in a new brewery that would be the located on Washington Street in Phoenix. Aptly named, the Phoenix Ale Brewery, they opened in April of 2011 with the aforementioned Fretzy’s Unfiltered Ale, a variation on an English Pale. Fretz threw

Greg had already been active with Sun Sounds, promoter of the annual Great Arizona Beer Festival as well as similar festivals in Tucson and Flagstaff. He served their Board of Directors as a community liaison and craft beer expert…perfect for him. He stepped things up by starting to host a series of small charity fundraisers at the brewery featuring everything from yoga to food trucks. Still he wanted something bigger, so he created the Phoenix Brewers Invitational. Held for the first time in December 2012, shortly after he began treatments for his recently diagnosed cancer, this event brought beer festivals back to downtown Phoenix. For a first year event, the festival was a success and Fretzy was already planning to make 2013 a bigger event. The thing about Fretzy was that he never let on how bad the cancer was, or how it was affecting him and his family. He remained positive and was convinced that this was just one more challenge that life would throw at him. To those in the craft community he was a tireless

champion, to others he should serve as an inspiration and a model for how to attack obstacles in the road of life. To his family, he was a dedicated husband and father. Greg leaves behind a wife and three children who supported him in his efforts and his fight against cancer. For those of you that would like to help, Greg had started a GoFundMe campaign to help his family with unpaid bills once he was diagnosed. You can donate at www.gofundme.com and navigate to the Fretzy Throat Cancer Fund page. As any other donation sites arise we will make sure we keep you aware of how you can help his family.

Life is short and you never know what will happen around the next corner. On a day when we were celebrating our craft beer culture, we lost one of our most special members of our community. Let this serve as a reminder to each of us to embrace life and never let the challenges put in our way slow us down. This amazing friend of craft beer in Arizona has left us far too soon and we are poorer for that. Don’t let this moment pass without letting Fretzy be an inspiration to you and find your own way to honor him over the next few weeks. And trust that he will be up there with a cold beer in hand when we finally join him.

REMEMBERING FRETZY Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s take a moment to reflect. As many of you know we lost yet another loved and well respected member of our beer community last week. Greg Fretz or “Fretzy” as many knew him; cofounder of Phoenix Ale lost his yearlong battle with throat cancer on Saturday. He was a very good man and like all of us, loved a great beer. My favorite memory of Fretzy was sitting quite drunk together at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival laughing our backsides off at all the Cougars and their crazy high heels. It was certainly one of those “had to be there” moments but I remember it fondly. My god, was that two years ago? It only seems like yesterday. Sometimes life can be short, entirely too short. It’s important to rememberwhen we think about the extended family that is our craft beer community. We are all in this together and we are all important and extremely vital, not just as beer lovers but most importantly as human beings.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Beer is an amazing thing, it tastes fantastic, brings people together and has played a pivotal role in human history, yet it’s those last words “Human History” that are the most significant. Please remember to take good care of yourselves, your families and your friends. Be kind to your fellow man and take the time to understand the people around you. Life is complicated, full of unexpected twists and no one is perfect, however, we are meant to celebrate life and to revel in it. Revel in it together. This is how I remember Greg Fretz and these are the lessons that I learned from the time he shared with me. Peace be with you old friend.

GAME! SECTION

While the U.S. men tend to avoid the European clay-court season, the American women appear to be coming to terms with the earthen surface. Take, for instance, Serena Williams. After winning only three clay-court tournaments from 2002 to 2008, the 15-time Grand Slam champ has been triumphant three times on dirt since April 2012, the most recent coming last month at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., where she successfully defended her title from Jelena Jancovic. It’s easy to see why Americans are less comfortable on the surface. Most were raised on hard courts, where the power game is better suited. On clay, hard shots tend to bounce higher and slower, meaning volleys last longer, thus putting more of a premium on athleticism and endurance and less on strength. Little wonder, then, why Maria Sharapova, a U.S.-raised Russian whose game relies on power, once described herself as a “cow on ice” on clay.

Dueling piano shows are a unique, fun way to celebrate any occasion while enjoying awesome live music. In this 6-part series, Randy Keith* reviews all the dueling shows offered in the valley…. This week, Tempe’s “Big Bang” (www.thebigbangbar. com): “Bang,” the valley’s oldest dueling club, offers a unique feel to “an evening out” with its multitiered seating. Watch the staff rock out as a band or join in the singing. Like most “classic” dueling piano shows, you can always request your friends to get onstage for a slightly-embarrassing “roast.”

LIVE! SECTION

DUELING PIANO MAGIC IN FULL FORCE

Jordan Benson, the youngest of bang’s full time staff, “loves being able to play piano for a living and loves making people happy with his music,” not to mention his Steve Perry-like vocal range. Join him and his teammates Sam, Mike, Julie, Collin, and Ben as they play all your requests from classic rock and rap! Catering to the local college crowd especially on weeknights, the entertainers at Bang always keep up with the latest modern hits as well as all of the sing-along classics. *Randy Keith is a piano entertainer and owner of PremierPianoShows.com. Look for part 2 of his series next week, dueling fun in Mesa and Chandler!

There’s a new nightclub in town – just south of downtown Phoenix at 3602 S. Central Avenue. El Pajarito Nightclub will be featuring “Rock nights” on Fridays and “Latin Nights” on Saturdays. Check out Krimson Chord on Saturday May 24th. They won the AZ Blues Showdown in 2010. Check out www.facebook.com/ElPajaritoNightClub or www. reverbnation.com/KrimsonChord for more information. -----------Limp Bizkit’s first single, “Ready to Go” featuring Lil Wayne, debuted strong this week on the iTunes Rock Songs Chart and Rock Albums Chart. The Grammy Award-nominated multiplatinum Florida titans-Fred Durst (vocals), Wes Borland (guitars), Sam Rivers (bass), and John Otto (drums)-uphold the hallmarks of their trademark sound with “Ready to Go”. Warped, wild guitars give way to danceable boots and a throbbing bass line as vocalist Fred Durst and Lil Wayne step in the ring and go rhyme-for-rhyme. It’s the perfect one-two punch of hard rock and hiphop. Also, it’s planted the foundation for the release of their seventh fulllength album, Stampede of the Disco Elephants, out later this summer. The band will hit The Marquee Theatre in Tempe (730 N. Mill Ave.) on Sunday, May 26th. For tickets or details, go to www.LuckyManOnline. com.

ALBUM REVIEWS Eisley Rediscovers their Groove on Currents, Slim Loris Delivers Sublime Future Echoes and Past Replays After 2011’s bitter The Valley, Currents finds the indie rock band Eisley returning to form. The DuPree sisters— Sherri, Stacy and Chauntelle—sound as angelic and siren-like as ever, and the music that accompanies their vocals is just as gorgeous. Hypnotic beats, lush acoustic guitars, a stirring string section and Sherri’s chilling vocals make “The Night Comes” a winning number, and the piano-led finale, “Shelter,” features a heavenly chorus from the trio before Stacy stuns you with a subtle delivery of lines like “Nowhere feels like somewhere when I’m in your arms.” The title track proves they still make some of the grooviest dance rock numbers around, “Blue Fish” magically combines melodies and soul-stirring lyrics together, and the jazzy rock of “Drink the Water” is a nice change of pace. Currents is arguably Eisley’s finest work yet.

The Swedish indie Americana rockers Slim Loris have released one of 2013’s best albums. Future Echoes and Past Replays is rapturous because it’s simultaneously whimsical (“Fear of Flying”), contemplative (“While I Breathe”) and euphoric (“Awakening”). The lyrics are razor-sharp too. Singer Mattias Cederstam opines that, “Happiness found its way past me/And I just let it be” on the Americana rock track “Visions of Tomorrow,” and croons, “You are the pride of my life/I will save/The memory of you till the last/But I’ll forget you in the end” on the heartbreaking “I Will Forget,” with such honesty that you don’t know whether to applaud his efforts or cry because of them. This surprising album’s variety, passion and genuineness will floor you.
