The Rock Slide, Breakers’ newest attraction, offers heart pounding action for the rider. It’s rockin’ and rollin’ with hard driving rock music and a psychedelic lightshow as you slide! It’s a whole new Breakers Experience! The Rip Tide slide consists of a vertical slide, attached to a thirty-five foot tower. Water park enthusiasts who dare to ride can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour as they descend the Rip Tide. This slide is different than any other attraction in this part of the state. The ride has best been described as ”Plunging downward from the take-off area, with your heart pounding, feeling as though you might just flip over.” One can travel at maximum velocity, catching air while being propelled down the steep crevasse of ultimate thrills combined with sheer terror and excitement. Shooting across the watery landing strip is comparable

to a brief ride on a Jet Ski, ending the experience of pure exhilaration… until one climbs the stairs to do it all over again. The Bonsai Pipeline features five super-slides for thrill seekers. These slides are built for speed, with twists and turns, thrills, chills and spills! Splash Canyon offers two fantastic slides for all ages. Surfari Bubbles round out the park’s attractions; these bubbles allow the rider to “run” on top of the water in a bubble! For kids under 48 inches in height, Breakers Water Park offers children’s wet and dry play areas at Captain

Kidd’s Surfari. The Surfari area is just the right size for the little ones, with lots of water and shade. Concessions at Breakers Water Park add to the mini-vacation experience. Everything from pizza to hamburgers, French fries and hotdogs, nachos, soft pretzels, and more are available at the park. Breakers Water Park is situated on over 20 acres in Marana, Arizona, just off of Tangerine Road east of I-10 and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10am – 6pm, plus Memorial Day and Labor Day. Monkey Business By Jim Gressinger

I do not know why, but there has been a rash of burger joints opening around Tucson recently. I mean, even the Ritz Carlton opened a specialty burger bar. So, Neighbor Roy & I have set ourselves upon a mission to once again select the best burger in Tucson. Last year the winner of the coveted #1 ranking on Southern Arizona Guide was Zinburger Wine & Burger Bar. And it may be again, but we thought we should now review the entire spectrum of wannabes. Our first candidate was Monkey Burger Downtown on 6th Avenue. The most notable feature is stuck in a corner by a front window. It’s a three and a half foot tall sculpture of a chimp … which seems odd since a chimpanzee is not a monkey. It was only 11:20 AM when we arrived and the lunch crowd was still hard at work wedged in their cubicles in nearby office buildings. So we seated ourselves right away. Soon thereafter, our waitress arrived to take our drink orders. When she returned, I inquired as to her name. “Valerie,” she said, “What would you gentlemen like for lunch?”

Initially, I inquired as to the characteristics of monkey meat. I mean, is it mostly white or dark? Valerie assured me that monkey meat is mostly dark, but a bit chewy if not well-smoked first. Valerie turned out to be, not only cute, but a quick wit. Good for you, girl! Roy ordered the True Blue: blue cheese; caramelized onions; romaine lettuce & grilled tomatoes. I asked Valerie if I could have one custommade to my specs. She said, “Sure, here you’re the boss.” Really? Life is good! I ordered my burger with caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, smoked cheddar cheese, with a side of mayo. No pickle. Valerie then advised us that we could order a side of fries for an additional $1 each. Sure, why not? Glancing around Monkey Burger Downtown, we noted the full bar; and above the bar, color photos of Monkey Burger’s specials: humongous wads of sizzling cow flesh with a ton of various toppings. Each specialty burger had to be at least 12 inches tall. In no time, Valerie arrived back at our table with our burgers & fries. The two meals together weighed about as much as Valerie soaking wet.

Now, I have dined out with Roy on many occasions and never known him to order fries, let alone eat one. Monkey Burger fries come in a large tin cup … a generous portion, to say the least. And here was my neighbor, friend, and honorary Southern Arizona guide munching happily on Monkey fries. What’s up with that? Half way through our meal I asked Roy what he thought about his True Blue. He had already devoured half and was scrapping the caramelized onions off the other half. He explained. “The caramelized onions neutralize the taste of the blue cheese. Without the onions, I can now taste the blue cheese and the burger is much more to my liking.” Roy is a gourmet in such complex matters as burger garnishments. As to my “special order” burger … very good. Fresh bun; cooked to order: medium. But as good as our burgers were, it was the fries that stole the show. Fantastic!!! Crisp. Not soggy and limp like those awful fries I reviewed at Five Guys last year. Question: is a Monkey Burger better than a Zinburger? Maybe. Very good burgers, to be sure. But definitely go for the fries. Best fries we have ever experienced. Monkey Burger Restaurant has 2 locations. JIVE BOMBERS PERFORM EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT AT CHICAGO BAR With the sultry vocal styling of Rebecca Carlson fronting the band, they have put their own stylistic brand on classic Blues, Jazz and some of the more obscure Americana. Hailing from the Mid-West and cutting her teeth in the unforgiving New York theater market Rebecca has proven herself in a business that demands the best.

the greatest names in the Blues world. But, don’t let that fool you, Johnny has been known to breathe fire and play solos that would make Jimi Hendrix proud. Michael P. Nordberg’s thumping bass keeps the band rockin’ through the night. His legendary talent is known throughout Tucson.

On the drums is New York City’s own Glenn Velardi. One listen to his driving backbeat and you will know why they call him “The Hit Man”. His style is one of the classic Blues tradition and an ability to create a groove big enough to drive a truck through.

Sharing the front seat with Rebecca is “Juke Joint” Johnny Strasser. Johnny’s vocal style brings to mind such Blues shouters as Wynonie Harris, Louis Jordan and even a little Delbert McClinton. He also lends his talent on slide guitar, harmonica, and acoustic guitar to the group.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy: This limited release doesn’t look or perform like an indie. Big on story and even bigger on performances, this thriller is a guess game dealing with current world politics, patriotism, terrorism and corporate culture. Former musician and current actor Riz Ahmed proves he is an up and coming star. Co-stars Liev Schreiber and Kate Hudson perfectly support his performance.

‘Come Out and Play’ Vinessa Shaw and Ebon MossBachrach play a couple that takes a vacation to a remote island only to, soon after their arrival, notice that no adults are present - an observation that quickly presents a nightmarish reality. (R - 105 minutes) Joseph: The only thing scarier than a psychopath clubbing someone to death whilst sporting an angry scowl is a cheerful child doing so whilst sporting a sunny smile. Having said that, the writer/director of “Come Out and Play” - who wears a mask and is known only by the name Makinov - has made a horror movie that may successfully prevent you from ever entering a playground ever again. It is an extremely eerie experience that is accompanied by a compelling conceit suggesting that there are some things against which we may be hesitant to defend ourselves.

12

of the overall plot, and yes, I was reminded of the style and pacing of episodic television. Probably the psychological link of a similar character portrait of star Kiefer Sutherland in this presentation of international intrigue, is reminiscent of Jack Bauer the TV series ‘24’. Some advice, sit back and go along for the 2-hour ride and let the narrative gingerly guide you through.

May 22nd, 2013 - May 28th, 2013

‘Renoir’ Vincent Rottiers plays a young man - the son of Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Michel Bouquet) - who returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is a young woman (Christa Theret) who rejuvenates, enchants and inspires both father and son. (R - 111 minutes) Joseph: It is strange that such a cinematically picturesque movie about a renowned painter of all people would be as shamelessly shallow as “Renoir.” If that is not irony, then nothing is, as writer/ director Gilles Bourdos’s new French-language drama goes absolutely nowhere and does so at such a tranquil pace that you may very well become hypnotized by its gorgeous cinematography and fall fast asleep. Fortunately, if you do, you will not have missed much as its beauty is only skin-deep. Bourdos fails to make any insightful observations while the film itself is as emotionally flat as canvas.

‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ Riz Ahmed plays a young Pakistani man who, while chasing corporate success on Wall Street, finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis and the enduring call of his family’s homeland. (R - 128 minutes) Stan: Caught between the proverbial ‘rock and a hard place’, Riz Ahmed as the central character delivers a powerful performance under the sure hand of director Mira Nair. That sure hand, with tendencies to overplay and over stage a few of the sequences, did serve to solidify various elements

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Joseph: “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” tells a timely and relatively tense tale about American patriotism that is rarely told or even pondered. However, director Mira Nair’s heavy-handed approach makes the message just a tad bit too hard to swallow. As she did in 2006’s “The Namesake,” Nair hammers the story’s significance into the viewer rather than tapping it in just enough to then allow author Mohsin Hamid’s narrative an opportunity to sink in on its own merits. Having said that, Declan Quinn’s cinematography speaks volumes as does star Riz Ahmed’s performance. Costar Kate Hudson seems to be somewhat of a black sheep here, though.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Beau Billingslea (‘Star Trek Into Darkness’)

By Joseph J. Airdo

“I didn’t know what I was auditioning for. Nowadays in the movie industry, everything is a big secret because they don’t want other people stealing their plotlines and all of that. So I auditioned and never knew the name of the project. About 3 weeks later, my manager called and said, ‘You know that thing you auditioned for a few weeks ago? It’s this little movie called ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ and you booked it.’ “I was about to join an iconic family, so to speak, and had no idea that was happening. It is a big thrill. I have been a fan since way back. It is a great joy, to say the least. As soon as I had the chance, I brought my wife onto the set so that she could walk around on the bridge and go through the transporter room and sick bay and all of that. I was moving around Sony’s studios like I was - and I still am - a fan, almost forgetting the fact that I was actually going to be working on the movie. “One of the things that it taught me about myself is that there is still a little boy inside. My excitement of being a part of Hollywood is still here. Sometimes it can get lost over the years but one of the things that it taught me - aside from the way the business goes - is that I am still a young guy at heart who loves Hollywood and is just pleased as pie to be a part of it.” – Beau Billingslea

The Great Gatsby ~ The trailer makes this incarnation of the literary classic to be loud and overdone. It turns out to be neither and quite dull. Grade: C

The Iceman ~ The disturbing true story of a contract killer allows Michael Shannon to flaunt his acting skills in the performance of his career. Grade: B+

Iron Man 3 ~ Fans may be disappointed w/ the lack of “superhero” moments, but the intricate plot, humor & action create an entertaining film. Grade: B+ Mud ~ Contender for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, etc. Dramatic, moving and well acted. A must see! Grade: A+ Pain & Gain ~ Non-stop entertainment from opening scene to closing frame. This unbelievable true story makes one heck of a dark action comedy. Grade: B+

MEET MASSIMO TENINO CHEF/OWNER OF TAVOLINO RISTORANTE ITALIANO

Born and raised in Italy, where he learned his cooking skills from his mother and grandmother, Massimo Tenino moved to the U.S. over 15 years ago. He spent five years cooking in Los Angeles, then five more in San Francisco before moving to Tucson and opening Tavolino in 2003. With the motto “Simple, Classic, Italian”, – Chef Massimo Tenino’s cuisine pays homage to the rustic recipes of his native Northern Italy and aims to bring an authentic Italian experience to the guests that dine in his restaurant.

The intriguing menu features fresh, hand-made pastas, signature pizzas from the wood-burning oven, rotisserie meats cooked in the Tuscan style brasserie fireplace and more; complemented by a wellrounded wine list featuring Italian classics and boutique offerings by the glass and bottle. Set in the picturesque Plaza Colonial shopping center in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, Tavolino boasts some of the best patio dining in town. Seating in the main dining room or at the bar

is elegant yet relaxed, while a Chef’s Table provides up to 14 guests with an intimate experience created exclusively for them. A private dining room is available for special events for up to 35 guests. Tavolino is open for Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner and Reverse Happy Hour. They feature live music on Friday nights and offer a variety of private dining and catering options. Chef Massimo is very proud to feature his family’s award winning wine at his restaurant, Pietro Rianldi. The Rinaldi Winery is owned by Paolo Tenino, brother of Chef/ Owner Massimo. The winery is located in the far north of Italy in the region of Piemonte. Both American and Italian leading wine publications have honored Pietro Rinaldi with prestigious awards, including Wine Spectator and Best 100 Wines on Wine Enthusiast.
