In ATC’s production of Jane Austen’s Emma, which opened on New Year’s Eve, Miss Emma Woodhouse has an abundance of them. She knows what is best for everyone around her with the big exception of herself. But we know what’s best for her even if she doesn’t; and so the

Anneliese van der Pol is vivacious as Emma who has sworn off marriage for herself, but gleefully plays matchmaker/ puppeteer to everyone else whether they want her to or not. Miss van der Pol had a lovely voice with great range that does justice to this contemporary score. Shannon Stoeke as Mr. Knightly, whose brother is married to Emma’s sister, is exceedingly dashing and is the one person who sees through Emma’s game and is her moral compass so to speak. Dani Marcus as Harriet Smith an inherently happy girl, despite her uncertain natural parentage, is delightful. Richert Easley plays Emma’s crotchety old father who doesn’t like

If you tend to shy away from period pieces or haven’t read any of Austen’s books don’t let that stop you from seeing this show. The story is very entertaining as it pokes fun at the British upper-crust while spinning a web of mismatched couples. Of course it all works out in the end; even as Emma wonders “How can he love

me with all of my flaws?” and her true love replies “You are faultless in spite of all of your flaws.” Now that is what love is all about, isn’t it?

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF CHEERS The 2013 Arizona Renaissance Festival February 9th – March 31st

Take a unique trip back in time to the Arizona Renaissance Festival. Join in the revelry every Saturday & Sunday from February 9, through March 31, 2013 including Presidents’ Day Monday, February 18. The Festival’s 30 acre village is filled with 12 stages of nonstop entertainment; music, comedy, falconry, dance and acrobatics. FILM! Stan Robinson, ScreenScene.org

Reviewers’ Roundtable The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic Listen to Joseph J. Airdo’s movie reviews and more during the entertainment portion of “Breakthrough Thinking Radio,” 2-3 p.m. Thursdays on KXXT 1010 AM.

‘Mama’*

Joseph J. Airdo Examiner.com

About the Film Columnists Stan Robinson, 66, is a retired first assistant director with more than 22 years of experience in film and media production. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at ScreenScene.org. Randy Montgomery, 34, works in media and marketing and holds a master’s degree in counseling and education. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at AZWeeklyMagazine.com. Joseph J. Airdo, 29, is a Walter Cronkite School of Journalism graduate with a bachelor’s degree in media analysis and criticism. Read his full features and reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com/Phoenix.

‘Broken City’* Mark Wahlberg plays an ex-copturned-private eye who is thrown headfirst into a hotbed of trouble after a mayor (Russell Crowe) hires him to look into his cheating wife. (R 109 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

‘The Last Stand’* Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a sleepy border town sheriff who, with his inexperienced staff, is the U.S. law enforcement’s last opportunity to intercept a drug kingpin who has just escaped from an FBI prison convoy before he slips across the border forever. (R - 107 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

January 16th, 2013 - January 22nd, 2013

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a man who, with his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain), is faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years. Before long, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home. (PG-13 100 minutes) *Screened after deadline.

‘Struck by Lightning’ Chris Colfer plays a high school senior whose last few weeks of life include a blackmail scheme concocted by his best friend (Rebel Wilson), a mother (Allison Janney) more interested in the bottle than her son’s future and an estranged father (Dermot Mulroney) who suddenly appears with a pregnant fiancée (Christina Hendricks). (NR - 84 minutes) Stan: This latest entry for young adults with the familiar ‘niche’ themes of friendships, loyalty, family, and most importantly, lessons for living life with the legacy we leave

behind, moves along at a brisk pace under the sure hand of director Brian Dannelly who honed his skills with years of directing episodic television. A wonderfully engaging character portrayed by Rebel Wilson, a favorite since her work in ‘Bridesmaids’ (2011) and the recent ‘Pitch Perfect’, brings a delightful spark of life to a very familiar theme. (Grade: B) Randy: Hollywood has a new heavyweight. Chris Colfer may be a familiar on-screen star but has proven that his real talent may be behind the scenes. You know him from the popular Fox show ‘Glee.’ In this new teen comedy, he flexes his creative writing muscle with expert direction by Brian Dannelly (‘Saved’). Colfer tackles the lead character delivering a warm and comedic look about finding your place, realizing and trying to fulfill your dreams, dealing with failure and how life goes on after your passing. A surprise hit that instantly has become one of my favorites. (Grade: A+) Joseph: With “Struck by Lightning,” “Glee” star Chris Colfer has written a role for himself that is so snotty and self-righteous that it is downright impossible to root for him to succeed much less believe that such a character would actually exist in real life without being beaten to a bloody

Attempts to be witty - which, for the record, are all based in tired clichés and stereotypes - come off as annoyingly arrogant and the movie is absent of any emotion whatsoever, failing its social message in the process. Soundbite Spotlight The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Anthony Mackie (‘Gangster Squad’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Gangster Squad,” which opened last weekend, Sean Penn plays a Brooklyn-born mob king who runs the show in this town with the protection of the police and the politicians who are under his control until a group of LAPD outsiders come together to try to tear his world apart. Anthony Mackie plays one of said outsiders. He is joined by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena and Giovanni Ribisi. “‘Gangster Squad’ is set in 1949 Los

Angeles. We play a misfit group of cops put together by the LAPD to take down legendary mob boss Mickey Cohen. It is a beautiful LA noir-type film. It has a [kick-butt] cast. There’s Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn. And [Ruben Fleischer] is a really cool and interesting director. It looks amazing and the action sequences are kind of out of control as well. There are a lot of tommy guns.” Anthony Mackie

Actress Tania Raymonde (‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” which opened two weekends ago, Alexandra Daddario plays a young woman who travels to Texas with her friends to collect an inheritance. Little does she know that an encounter with a chainsawwielding killer is part of the reward.Tania Raymonde plays Daddario’s character’s friend - the proverbial party girl of this horror flick. “I have a very high tolerance for gore and blood. I am like the perfect horror movie viewer because I do not get scared very easily. I can really stomach anything so, as a result, I have watched a lot of really disgusting stuff that I should probably never have seen. But some of my favorite movies are horror movies - like ‘The Shining’ and ‘The Birds.’ I am a movie fan across the board, though, so if a movie is well done then I love it and it does not really matter what the genre is. “I was a big fan of the original [‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’]. I saw it when I was a kid and was really freaked out by it. I was like 12 or 13 years old and I remember my dad telling me, ‘This is a slasher movie. It is going to be really freaky but you have got to watch it.’ It really remained vivid in my mind so to be part of a remaking of that movie was really cool. Plus, ‘Texas

Chainsaw Massacre’ is like the best title of any movie in history. It is a cool legacy to be a part of. “I think that the creepiest part about Leatherface is that he has got a human side to him. He is not an alien from another planet or a monster. He is a disturbed person and I think that is like the most terrifying part of the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ And in terms of comparing it to other remakes, the nice thing about our movie is that the filmmakers really paid a lot of attention to not only mimicking the way that the original was made in terms of look and feel but also trying to make this like a direct follow-up to the original movie.” - Tania Raymonde

Bonus Feature The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD or video-on-demand.

You get to see him in love. Any actor would like a part where he gets to go through a whole range of emotions.” Jamie Johnston

Special Feature Award Shows, Oscar, ‘And, the Winner Is…’ By Stan Robinson During and leading up to the golden globe awards, Hollywood buzz is flowing. It starts with the People’s Choice awards, Golden Globe wins, and on to the Oscars® for the movies and the stars. After 22 years of working in the motion picture industry, I’m used to it; in fact, I’ve come to expect and look forward to it. It’s rather exciting, as the studios, both big and small position their exposure outreach in favor of their films and participants. With the declared winner from this year’s 38th year for the People’s Choice Awards, and the 70th Golden Globe Awards, the road to Oscar® is officially open!

In “Love Me,” Lindsey Shaw plays a teenager who, despite her friends’ warnings, falls for her mysterious new classmate (Jamie Johnston). But what seems like a love story hits a major twist when the police begin an investigation into the young man’s involvement in the case of a missing woman.

Words like ‘precursor’ and ‘indicator’ are associated with the globe winners as the most likely winner of the Oscars is the common perception, or, misconception. Those of us who actually work in the motion picture industry know that the winners of Golden Globes are not even close to an indication of who might win an Oscar®! It does make for interesting conversations and helps with the ‘buzz’ and excitement leading up to the Oscars®.

“My character is a good guy but he has sort of been shoved aside and forced to become a loner. In this movie, I meet a girl and we fall in love. Then we go through some rough times. You get to see different sides of this character. You get to see him when he is all alone, feeling depressed. You get to see him angry.

The true indicators are awards in the working crafts like the Directors Guild Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. These awards are given by the industry, to industry workers (actors, technicians, etc.) while the Golden Globes, who are actually the press movie reviewers and critics, don’t work in the industry,

and don’t have a vote on who wins an Oscar®! The Oscars® are given by the Motion picture industry, to motion pictures industry workers and, the Academy nominating and voting members are from the various working professionals who vote in their classifications for craft awards. I have had the good fortune of working for twenty plus years in the industry, and the past six years as a movie reviewer and writing industry articles. We in the industry watch the ‘craft awards’ very closely. Craft awards like the Directors Guild of America awards, Writers Guild of America awards, Screen Actors Guild awards, and the Cinema Audio Society awards are but a few of the true indicators of possible Oscar® winners. Here’s a quick look at each of these ‘super’ awards presentations: the movie goers ‘The People’s Choice Awards, the press’ Golden Globe Awards’, and the motion picture industry’s Oscars®. The Golden Globe Awards: In 1944, a group of journalist from around the world was in Hollywood for the purpose of delivering an impartial view on motion pictures and their impact. They were known then, and

to this day as, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association”. In order not to be swayed and influenced by the powers in Hollywood, net even the Academy Awards® choices, it was important to them that they give their awards before the Oscars®. Today, with almost a hundred or so members from just as many countries from around the world, the Golden Globe Awards are presented. Keep in mind; this is the ‘press’, from around the world with diverse, broad perceptions, and expectations. The People’s Choice Awards: These awards can be generally stated as reflective of the movie-going, TV watching, and music listening general public and an American awards show recognizing the people and the work of popular culture. The show has been held annually since 1975 and is voted on by the general public. Procter & Gamble and Survivor magnate Mark Burnett produces the People’s Choice Awards. A switch to online voting took hold when the winners of the 31st People’s Choice Awards, which aired January 9, 2005, were decided by online voting rather than Gallup polls, with

a nationally representative sample of men and women ages 18 to 54. The Academy Awards®: The Oscars® on the other hand, are awarded by the U.S. Motion Picture Industry, for motion picture industry workers, based on creative presentation of ideas / and the technical excellence of producing a motion picture. The Academy was formed in 1927, and is a professional honorary organization of motion picture artists and craftsmen. The primary goal of the Academy is to “advance the arts and science of motion pictures. The Oscar® voters, about 6,500 or so, represent the working crafts which only vote in their categories. Actors vote for actors, directors vote for directors, and so on. All of the members vote for best picture. Our British counterparts in motion picture production have a very similar award structure for honoring the best in movies. The British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) is the UK’s organization which honor’s their best in film, Television and interactive media. Created in 1946, the British Academy of Film & Television Arts has more than 4,000 members consisting of professionals working in the film, television and interactive industries. The various unions and guilds, which represent all of the persons working on film projects, have awards & ceremonies honoring the best within the working craft fields in the motion picture industry. These are the awards that we, as working technicians in the industry, follow closely. Industry awards such as the Directors Guild Awards for best director are voted on only by Directors Guild of America members and, the SAG Screen Actors Awards for actors and again, are only voted on by SAG (Screen Actors Guild) members, about 120,000. If you’ve been following along, you would have noticed that

Actress Jessica Chastain, a vegan, ate soy ice cream to gain weight for her role in ‘The Help’. with these 2 industry craft awards, 5 of the 6 major categories for the Oscars®, are represented by these 2 craft awards: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Best Picture is the ‘wild card’ because there isn’t a craft award for this overall category. That’s why on occasion you’ll find that a director might win an Oscar® for ‘Best Director’ but his film didn’t win ‘Best Picture’! I took a quick look and these two jumped right out at me, the winner of the SAG award has gone on to win an Oscar® 12 of the last 16 years or so! As for the “Best Director” Oscar® winner, well the results are just as weighted for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award winner. How’s this for a statistic, only six or seven times in the Directors Guild’s 60+ year history, has the DGA winner NOT gone on to collect the Best Director Academy Award®! So, when we in the industry see or hear comments by radio, TV, or film critics say things like “the front runners for the Oscars®, based on the winners of the Golden Globes” are likely to be...” (Long pause…) we just smile”... The complete roster of all 5,765 or so of voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a closely guarded secret. Academy voters are less diverse than the movie going public, and even

And now, for Oscar predictions in the major categories for 2012! These are who I think should win, not who I think will win. My predictions of who will win are based on the results of the various craft awards, which look to be completed by 20 February 2013. My predictions on who will win will be in the Thursday 21 February 2013 issue’s Film! Section. My “Best Picture” goes to ‘Argo’, it’s a moving film from director/star Ben Affleck as he fills in the blanks behind 1980 joint CIA-Canadian plan to extract 6 American diplomats from Iran. With an all-star cast the film moves briskly along with finely chiseled characters... My “Best Director” goes to Behn Zeitlin for ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’, his feature film debut, principal cast of first time actors in starring roles, and locations that truly tested the skills of production, delivered a powerful story of survival and human fortitude. My “Best Actor” goes to Hugh Jackman for his performance in ‘Les Misérables’ which required singing virtually every line while portraying a wide range of emotional feelings from despair to extreme happiness throughout the film. My “Best Actress” to Emmanuelle Riva, who captures the essence of a bright and vibrant senior woman sliding into helpless dementia, after having a stroke in ‘Amour’. My “Best Supporting Actor” goes to Christoph Waltz for delivering a mesmerizingly warm and calculating character’ in ‘Django Unchained’. And My “Best Supporting Actress” goes to Anne Hathaway for a stunning performance in the ‘femme fatale’ riches to rags role in ‘Les Misérables’. Be sure to read my predictions on who will win in the Thursday 21 February 2013 issue’s Film! Section.

BRIAN MALARKEY of ‘THE TASTE’ turns a blind eye to cooking

28

ABC launches a cooking competition Tuesday, Jan. 22, and from descriptions, – no screeners were available at this writing – “The Taste” sounds very much like “The Voice.” Instead of talented singers, chosen sight unseen, now the contestants are chefs presenting food in blind taste tests. “We are trying to find teams that we can mentor,” says Brian Malarkey, one of the four judges. The others are Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson and Ludo Lefebvre. “We are tasting food that we don’t see how it is presented or who cooked it. It is super hard. “Your taste buds will go crazy, and you are breaking it down,” he continues. “It got me to focus on flavor again.” An example of a challenge on the show would be to cook “nose to tail – exotic cuts of animal,” Malarkey says. “It could be a fish cheek or a pig’s tail.” “We help our team try to win a team challenge, then they have to compete against each other individually,” Malarkey says. “We could kick off someone from our own team.”

Better Know a Grape: Italian Reds By: Nathan Brugnone, @NathanBrugnone

There are hundreds of types of grapes that are made into wine. Let’s get to know a few of them. Zinfandel: For a long time, Zinfandel was thought to be a purely American native grape. This was exciting, because most American native grapes do not have the potential to produce wines that compete with European and Asian varietals. Think Concord— Manischewitz—that is a truly American wine. Researchers in California; however, have recently discovered that American Zinfandel is genetically identical to Italian Primitivo and Croatian CrljenakKaštelanski. No one is too sure where the name or vines came from. Nebbiolo: Wines crafted from this Italian grape go through a color change as they age from light red to orange. With this color transformation the wines also develop more complex and intriguing aromas and flavors; like tobacco, truffle, and tar. In Arizona, a couple brands have taken to producing rosés of Nebbiolo, including Caduceus Cellars and Sand Reckoner. Sangiovese: Fans of fava beans and liver might recognize this grape, as it is the key ingredient in Chianti. Barbera: A grape with an increasing number of plantings around Arizona—including The Valley—this grape serves well alone or as a color enhancer when combined with Nebbiolo. Montepulciano: The second most planted grape in Italy is still working its way into the American English vernacular, but Lightning Ridge Cellars in Sonoita is ahead of the curve with its many plantings of the grape. That’s mont-uh-pool-chee-a-no to you! AZWeeklyMagazine.com

AZ Stronghold "Tagged" at KimptonFiresky By: Alison BailinBatz Kimpton has done it again! The innovative boutique hotel brand, currently with two concepts in the Valley – Firesky in Scottsdale and Palomar in Phoenix – is proudly kicking off 2013 by focusing on Arizona’s own growing wine industry. On January 23, Kimpton’s Firesky will welcome Arizona Stronghold Vineyards into their signature restaurant, Taggia, as they co-host the upscale venue’s first wine dinner of the year. The menu will include winter specialties crafted by Taggia’s executive chef, Massimo De Francesca, a relatively new culinary face in the Valley with a resume to drool over that includes work under Michelin-starred chef Vincenzo Cammerucci in Italy, as well as worldclass French chef Jean Pierre Challet, among others. What guests can expect to eat: ●● Scallop Carpaccio with crispy prosciutto, pink peppercorns and cilantro vinaigrette ●● Lobster cannelloni with black trumpets and roasted poblano besciamella ●● Braised lamb leg, smoked tomato ragu, sweet potato gnocchi and winter vegetables ●● Banana “cotta” with rum caramel, vanilla and toasted pistachio

Arizona Stronghold will pair each course with a selection from their 2011 varietals as well as tempt guests’ taste buds with a specialty Magnus Sangiovese Blend tasting.

For more information, please visit www. taggiascottsdale. com.

For those unfamiliar with the local brand, below is an overview of some of their most-beloved releases: DAYDEN (Dry Rosé ): Dayden is all about subtlety and finesse with a refreshing, vibrant mix of delicate strawberries, sour cherries and floral aromas all wrapped in a rich texture with crisp acidity. TAZI (AromaticWhite blend): Slightly chilled, Tazi restrains itself offering notes of lemon, green peppercorns, fresh herbs, and almond biscotti. As the wine comes to room temperature, it reveals racier aromas of lychee, perfume, ripe honeydew and vanilla bean. DALA (Cabernet Sauvignon): The newest release from Arizona Stronghold, this Cabernet Sauvignon has power and subtlety with a solid bouquet of black currant, cassis, spice cake, fennel and graphite. There is a nice depth of flavors showing dark berry, dried cherry, cola, sassafras, cocoa powder and clove, with velvety tannins, structured acid and a rich persistent finish. MANGUS (Tuscan blend): This is a medium bodied Sangiovese-based blend, displaying fragrances of dusty spice, dried orange peel, tart raspberry, flowers, graphite, and rustic dried herbs. Reservations for the dinner start at $85++ per person and available now by calling 480-424-6095.

SOUR BEERS ARE HERE! Hello again craft beer lovers. Today, let’s take a moment to chat about Sour Beers. Yes, I said SOUR Beer. Many of you may have already heard me waxing poetic about how popular these brews will be in years to come. So exactly why are these beers sour and which ones are they? First let’s speak about flavour and fermentation. There are many different varieties from bright and bitter to dark and tangy but all share one common link, Wild Fermentation. During this time the beers are exposed to bacteria beyond regular cultivated brewer’s yeasts and in turn produce many curious and sometimes unpredictable “off” flavours during their time in fermentation. The most common characteristics are strong notes of tart vinegar, acidic fruit and wood from barrel aging. Some are seasoned with fruit like cherries, current berries and raspberries which add another dimension altogether. Most of the sour beers available on the local market today hail from Belgium. Petrus Golden Aged Pale, Monk’s Café, Schaerbeekse Kriek and Duchess De Borgogne are a few of note, although from time to time American breweries such as New Belgium Brewing and Odell Brewing produce beers such as La Folie Brown Sour & Meddler Wild Ale to tame our hearts for tart!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Although an acquired taste, many craft beer drinkers take to sours right away. Don’t shy away if your first sip feels more like a strong shot to the chin. These things take time. Food pairing can be a great way to acclimate your pallet to these brews. Coupling goat’s cheeses with Adriatic fig and cherry spreads and dark grain crackers or lamb skewers with yogurt sauce and tabouli with any of these beers is a guaranteed hit. Until Next Week, Cheers! January 16th, 2013 - January 22nd, 2013

to this day. Cantillon and DrieFonteinen are classic examples. The yeasts and bacteria are now found to be a part of the breweries themselves in larger numbers more than anything floating free in the air of the Senne Valley. These strains are cultivated and pitched in barrels or separate fermenters (and, preferably, buildings! Wild yeasts can be very infectious when you don’t want them to be.) by many modern brewers without the need of the open air. 10. There are 1984 ounces of beer in a standard 15.5 half barrel of beer. This equates to approximately 6.88 cases.

13. The Babylonian people were credited with brewing beer over 4,000 years ago. Almost every civilized society in the world has brewed some sort of beer.

14. Due to their dwindling supplies the pilgrims aboard the Mayflower had to abandon their plans to arrive at Jamestown, Virginia and instead landed at

15. The brew got its name the same year when Dutchman and brewer Gerard Adrian Heineken bought the 272-year-old De Hooiberg brewery. So how did you do? 11. Molson brewing in Montreal opened in 1786, Yuengling in Pottsville is the oldest American brewery having opened in 1829. It is also the largest American owned brewery. 12. Philadelphia has the richest brewing traditions. Its first brewery opened in 1885 and by 1890 over 95 breweries operated there. I love to day drink and eat, but I have become rather fond of reverse happy hour! It is becoming more and more popular for restaurants to add this, and I am glad that they are doing so. Pita jungle is never a bad call, but the reverse happy hour makes you go for an evening drink with a date rather than just some lunch. I went on a date there the other night, and one of the bartenders Cass was sassy and classy, and made you feel at home. The reverse happy hour is nightly from 9pm-close. Three dollar draft beers are not a bad deal; especially when I was ordering Full Sail I.P.A. The two dollar tapas are amazing! They are quite small, but you get a variety of items for ten dollars and you are solid! I think that this is the best location if you are coming in for an evening as I did, since the ambiance there is way more modern yet cozy at the same time. 20910 North Tatum Boulevard #140 Phoenix, AZ 85050
