GLOBETROTTERS LET FANS "WRITE THE RULES"
Innovators of the game of basketball for decades, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters have introduced something unparalleled in the history of sports and family entertainment, taking kid participation and fun to a whole new level when the Globetrotters come to the Valley for a Friday night game in Casa Grande on Feb. 8, and a Phoenix doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9. For the first time ever, during the Globetrotters’ 2013 “You Write the Rules” World Tour, your family’s smiles will begin before you even get to the show. Fans will decide the rules for the game that could affect the final outcome. This could be anything from playing with two basketballs

at once, to getting double the points for each basket made, to the Globetrotters’ revolutionary 4-point shot, which is an amazing 35 feet away from the basket. “Our fans are at the heart of everything we do,” says Globetrotters star Dizzy Grant, the first player in history to hit a 4-point shot, which was introduced in 2010. “Letting the fans determine some of the rules is a way to get them even more engaged and is something only the Globetrotters do.” Go online with your kids to www. harlemglobetrotters.com to vote for which rule you want to see implemented in the game. We are also one of the few professional teams on the planet that set aside a few minutes after virtually every game to sign autographs, giving fans the opportunity to meet a player in person.” The popularity of women’s basketball has grown in recent years, no more evident than with one of the US Airways Center’s tenants, the Phoenix Mercury, but the Globetrotters are the only pro team known that has women playing with the guys, with three female players on this year’s roster.

Since 1955 the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has set the pace in the Arabian horse world. The first show was held at the grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel which was a beautiful setting for a horse show. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show was a first class show from the very first day. After the show's beginnings at the Arizona Biltmore, Ann McCormick bought 150 acres in Scottsdale and made it into the horse facility known as Paradise Park which served the needs of the show for many years. Since that time, the show has been held at Westworld in Scottsdale. It has grown from 50 horses to nearly 2400 horses bringing top owners, trainers and breeders from around the world competing for a chance at winning. José Limón (1908–1972) was a crucial figure in the development of modern dance. His powerful dancing shifted perceptions of the male dancer, while his choreography continues to bring a dramatic vision of dance to audiences around the world. Born in Mexico, Limón moved to New York City in 1928 after a year at UCLA as an art major. It was here that he saw his first dance program.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present the celebrated Limón Dance Company on Friday, Feb. 22. Acclaimed for its dramatic expression, technical mastery and expansive, yet nuanced movement, the Limón Dance Company illustrates the timelessness of José Limón’s work and vision.
In 1946, after studying and performing for 10 years with Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, Limón established his own company with Humphrey as artistic director. Limón’s choreographic works were quickly recognized as masterpieces and the Limón Dance Company itself became a landmark of American dance. Now led by Artistic Director Carla Maxwell, Limón Dance Company performs a repertoire of unparalleled breadth that balances classic works with commissions from contemporary choreographers.
Their Scottsdale program will showcase two masterpieces choreographed by José Limón: Mazurkas from 1958 with music by Frédéric Chopin, and the company’s signature work, The Moor’s Pavane (Variations on a Theme of Othello) from 1949 with music by Henry Purcell. The company also will perform the 2012 work Come with Me, a
collaboration between worldrenowned Cuban composer and musician Paquito D’Rivera and Rodrigo Pederneiras, the principal choreographer of Grupo Corpo, Brazil’s leading contemporary dance company. ‘Warm Bodies’ Nicholas Hoult plays a zombie who becomes involved with the girlfriend (Teresa Palmer) of one of his victims (Dave Franco) and discovers that their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world. (PG-13 - 97 minutes) Stan: Writer/director Jonathan Levine’s presentation of the age-old theme of the lifeless hopeless world of ‘zombies’, is indeed very clever
Joseph: “Warm Bodies” is strangely romantic. And not just in the amorous zombie-boy-meetshuman-girl kind of way but also in its overall outlook on the world - which is weird considering this is a postapocalyptic motion picture, after all. Writer/director Jonathan Levine’s cinematic adaptation of author Isaac Marion’s novel is incredibly idealistic, pinpointing poetry in an otherwise extremely bleak existence. In addition to being able to jump-start viewers’ hearts, the flick also stimulates their brains and taps on their funny bones with its witty and wry sense of humor. Bella and Edward have got nothing on Julie and R. (Grade: B)

Actor Dave Franco (‘Warm Bodies’) By Stan Robinson “I’ haven’t had a role to this point that required me to be in totally in character for weeks at time, I don’t have any crazy stories like sleeping out on the streets for weeks at a time, or going through intensive boxing training for an extended period of time. I did do this big action movie coming out this summer called ‘Now You See Me’, and there’s a lot of fight sequences. Rather than sitting in my chair and waiting for them to tell me to come on set and get right into the scene, I’ll be running laps around the building to get my heartbeat up. I didn’t want to fake being exhausted, so little things like that I’ll do which is nothing like what Daniel Day-Lewis for ‘Lincoln’ or Joaquin Phoenix for ‘The Master’ goes through, and I think that is the extent of my ‘Method Acting’! “‘Warm Bodies’ kind of found me, when I first heard about the project, to be honest, I wasn’t terribly excited about it because I heard that it was ‘another zombie movie’ which we’ve seen a lot of recently. But then I heard that Jonathan Levine, the director, was attached and I’m a huge fan of his previous work, mainly ‘The Wackness’ which I had seen several times before this came about, and of course I loved ‘50/50’. I knew that he was going to bring something different to it. He is such a smart guy, and when you look at his track record, he’s always brought something original to his projects!

“And then I read the script, and it’s got a really cool fresh tone to it. It is the first zombie movie of its kind in terms of the fact that its very funny, and that he cast a guy like Rob Corddry, a comedian, which is not the safe choice, or even the obvious choice to take because you wouldn’t picture Rob Corddry in a zombie movie! But, he ‘kills it’, he’s so funny, and I don’t know if a lot of people know this but he comes from a theater background and he is a very serious actor and so during the parts where he has to be serious, he ‘kills that too’ so those are some of the main reasons I was drawn to the project. “In this film is the first time we get to sympathize with the zombies, they’re always the protagonist and I give the main actor Nicholas Hoult a lot of credit because his role has the typical killing humans, eating their brains, and you’re routing for him while he’s doing all this crazy stuff and so inherently this person has to be very likable, and Nicholas Hoult was able to bring that dichotomy to the role! It’s a very tough role because his character has this huge journey without being able to say much, its all his body language. I’m sure a lot of actors would come in a play it a little bit over the top and it would feel too silly. Nick is so subtle, and everything comes across in his movements and he really just grounds the movie, and the whole thing is on his shoulders because if his character doesn’t work, the whole movie doesn’t work. He was such an inspiration for the entire cast to give our very best in each of our roles forming a true ensemble climate for the film!” - Dave Franco

He is a slim guy, he talks fast, he is short-fused and he has ability with knives. But he was basically a sidekick. Whether you read comics or not, you are familiar with these relationships between the leader and the sidekick and the love interest and her affair with maybe someone else. And that is not even superheroes. That is just life. Ben filled the role of a sidekick who could never get past being a sidekick despite how much he really respected his leader. Melchiorri revisits past projects in ‘Hotel impossible: after anthony’

Things you expect from a show about a guy who goes in full throttle to fix failing hotels: scenes of dirty rooms, bad service and hopeless business practices followed by wondrous makeovers. What you don’t expect is to get choked up. But that happened to Anthony Melchiorri every time he went to some far-flung location to shoot an episode of his Travel Channel series “Hotel Impossible,” currently in its second season. The straight-talking New Yorker gets caught up in the personal stories of the hotel owners he meets, many of whom open their hearts to him and are clearly desperate for his help. “I never in a million years thought it would be this emotional,” Melchiorri says. “There’s not a show I haven’t cried on; there’s not a show where people haven’t cried. ... They know I’m the real deal. So they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, this guy’s really here to help me,’ and that becomes emotional. And sometimes they get emotional because I say something they don’t like, and they want to take my head off. Emerging Wine Regions By: @NathanBrugnone Arizona, as most of us are now aware, is a fledgling among the international wine scene. As seemingly unlikely a wine destination Arizona is, there are many other regions around the world that are similarly beginning to take flight. •

Uruguay: While some are calling Uruguay the Bordeaux of South America, its shining product—and national wine—is made from Tannat, a highly tannic grape. And while Uruguay’s wines may be relatively new to the rest of the world, Tannat has been produced there since the nineteenth century—so long, in fact, that Uruguay has developed its own clones, especially suited to its climate. Morocco: Though wine is rumored to have been produced here since before Christ, Morocco is just beginning to hit the international market. Its most widely-planted wine grape, Cinsault, does incredibly well here as it does in the south of France, owing to its drought tolerance.
Finding Cinsault in Morocco is not surprising either, as this area is a former French colony. •

Michigan: For many, any mention of Michigan conjures images of a postapocalyptic hell-scape, but Michigan is quite a majestic and sophisticated wine region. Situated along the 45th parallel—the same as Bordeaux and Burgundy— Michigan is producing some world-class Gewürztraminer and Riesling along the northwestern banks of its lower peninsula, near Traverse City. Croatia: Known for its Malvasia and Zinfandel—known there as CrljenakKaštelanski—the Dalmatian Coast along the Adriatic Sea produces some of Croatia’s finest wines. White wines produced in Croatia bring out the region’s full terrior when paired with its oysters and worldrenowned tuna.

So what outside event kick-starts some fun for us Arizonans? It’s the event that brings people together for days full of golf, fun, beer and parties: The PGA Tour. Now we all know during the day the PGA Tour is golf, players of the sport and, well, more golf. Just like every other sporting event, beer is a given to be sold, but did you know that wine is actually a big part of it as well? Neither did I! Yep, Beringer, the oldest operating winery in Napa Valley, is the official wine of the PGA Tour. In 2010, Beringer signed the partnership with the PGA, and in 2011 they extended their agreement another four years.

The best kept secret in the world of wine is, ironically, hidden inside the doors of one of Arizona’s most popular and celebrated resorts. CIDERS ON THE RISE
It has been no secret that for the past few years craft beer has been an exploding trend across America. Everywhere you look there are new breweries and craft beer bars opening up. It used to be that ten to twenty tap handles was considered a lot. Now, we routinely see fifty handle bars featuring “No crap on tap” signs and bar owners that eight years ago couldn’t even spell IPA are scrambling to find the most flavorful of the heavily hopped beers. Given all that, it is no wonder that craft beer has grown consistently at double digit rates over the past five years and is well over 16% this year. However, another beverage is coming along for the ride. A beverage that proves , as Bruce Springsteen wrote, “Everything dies, baby that’s a fact, but maybe everything that dies some day comes back…” Such is the case with hard cider.

Hard cider, alcoholic fruit juice, usually from apples, is not a new creation. In fact it has been around ever since someone accidentally let apple juice sit around too long allowing the sugars to ferment from the natural yeasts in the air. Exactly

when that happened is unclear. There are records of apple trees along the Nile River delta as early as 1300 BC but nothing to say if cider was produced. The earliest known record of cider dates back to 55 BC when the Romans arrived in England. They found the residents of Kent drinking a cider like beverage and Julius Caesar immediately embraced this new found beverage. Cider began to really become popular around the time of the Norman Conquest, 1066 AD, when orchards were planted specifically to grow cider apples, farm workers were paid in cider and monasteries were producing a strong, spiced cider which they sold to the public. Who ever thought that there might be Trappist Ciders? American history tells a different tale. Early English settlers introduced cider to America by bringing with them seeds for cultivating cider apples. During the colonial period, grains did not thrive well and were costly to import. On the other hand, apple orchards were plentiful, making apples cheap and easily obtainable. Continued On Page 36

As a result, hard cider quickly became one of America’’s most popular beverages. Consumption of cider increased steadily during the eighteenth century, due in part to the efforts of the legendary Johnny Appleseed, who planted many apple trees in the Midwest. American cider started to wane in popularity when the German immigrants of the mid 1800’s brought with them recipes and methods for brewing beer that allowed them to set up large breweries and produce a large amount to sell relatively inexpensively. That coupled with the early rumblings of the Temperance Movement slowly led to the demise of hard cider in this country. Prohibition all but killed it off. Cider was still made in very small batches at home. Typically this was accomplished by allowing regular apple juice or non-alcoholic cider to ferment naturally, much as the early ciders were made. This beverage, sometimes freeze distilled and called Applejack, was an alternative to the bathtub gin of Prohibition and

continued to be enjoyed in individual households. However improved evaporative distillation methods which removed the impurities that freeze distillation left in, ensured that Applejack would never replace more traditional spirits. Cider sort of plodded along through the years until the craft beer movement started in the mid 1970’s with the opening of the New Albion Brewery by pioneer brewer Jack McAuliffe. Slowly, as old boundaries were pushed in the production of beer, brewers and consumers started looking for different flavors and naturally looked to the past to update and hopefully improve nostalgic recipes. Such was the case for cider. While cider had remained in production in Europe, mostly England and France, Americans no longer had a cider tradition so they created new brands, ones that had more commercial opportunity then the more expensive imports. The wheels of the cider industry were slowly turning again. Apple at first and then some creativity introduced other

fruits into the mix. Pear, Peach and Raspberry ciders were all produced, although in truth, many of these were just apple ciders with flavoring added. These beverages typically had one thing in common, they were sweet, sometimes cloyingly so. They became another Zima like beverage, not beer, but close enough for people to drink and enjoy with beer drinkers. Still the popularity grew, and folks that had enjoyed flavored malt beverages like Zima started to flock to ciders and brewers found that ciders blended well with certain beers allowing the flavors in the beer to take some of the edge off the sweetness of the cider and the fruit in the cider to enhance the beer. Stout and cider has become
a popular combination. One company in particular started looking at different ways to produce cider, and perhaps find flavors that went beyond sweet. Inspired by the English who make drier ciders and serve them over ice Crispin Ciders was born. Based in Minneapolis but with their cidery located in Northern California wine country, Crispin has re-invented cider once again. Their flagship cider is dry and served over ice. It has a pronounced difference from most American and even Canadian ciders. But that is not all they do. This is a creative bunch and experimentation is natural. Of course they have a fruit cider lineup, sold under the Fox Barrel label which

I feel like Fountain Hills is a place that a lot of people don’t care to venture out to, but there are actually some really cool spots out there. In case you haven’t heard, there’s a big football game down in New Orleans on Sunday. That’s highly unlikely, especially if you’re a viewer of CBS, which for the past week has put on an all-out blitz of programming related to Super Bowl XLVII from the Big Easy. The eye network has deployed its news, sports and entertainment divisions at what it’s dubbed CBS Super Bowl Park at Jackson Square in the French Quarter, offering reports on what’s been happening there the past week, ranging from night life and celebrities in New Orleans to the recovery from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina and, of course, what the teams involved have been up to. So by now, you should be up to speed on all things New Orleans. As for the game itself, the clash between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers airs the evening of Sunday, Feb. 3, from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms on the call for CBS. The broadcast day from New Orleans begins with “Face the Nation,” followed by three specials, “Road to the Super Bowl,” an NFL Films montage of the sights and sounds of the 2012 season; “New Orleans: Let the Good Times Roll,” in which host Wynton Marsalis takes a musical tour of the city; and “Phil Simms All-Iron Team: Super Bowl Edition,” in which Simms and Nantz highlight some of the greatest moments in Super Bowl history.
