Since 1955 the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has set the pace in the Arabian horse world. The first show was held at the grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel which was a beautiful setting for a horse show. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show was a first class show from the very first day. After the show's beginnings at the Arizona Biltmore, Ann McCormick bought 150 acres in Scottsdale and made it into the horse facility known as Paradise Park which served the needs of the show for many years. Since that time, the show has been held at Westworld in Scottsdale. It has grown from 50 horses to nearly 2400 horses bringing top owners, trainers and breeders from around the world competing for a chance at winning. A win at Scottsdale can mean big money in the breeding barns.

“Don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax the guy behind the tree” Anonymous Ah, January, still beautiful and aromatic in Arizona, but it’s time to pay the piper. You should be receiving all relevant IRS documents by the last day of this month so you can start submitting your tax returns from now until April 15. Of course if you file late without asking for an extension, then be prepared for a penalty. If you’re an Arizona casino player, however, there’s some good news. It’s one of the states that allow you to fade your winnings against your losses. That means if you file itemized deductions, then you only pay taxes on your actual gambling profits after the aggregate year-long losses are subtracted from that figure. Always follow the advice of your tax accountant but be aware that they’re probably not experts regarding gaming legislation. Here are some tips. W-2G: This is also know as “Certain Gambling Winnings”, and will be issued by the casino anytime a single jackpot is at or over $1200. The IRS will also receive a copy (states base their data on the federal information) and the form must be signed by the winner. I do not have them remove money from my winnings unless I am ahead for that calendar year. You will have to show staff a social security card as well as an ID, like a driver’s license, if you don’t want cash removed from your prize. Make sure the amount you claim for winnings (federal/state tax returns) is at least as much as the aggregate amount on you W2G’s, even though you may have sustained a loss for the year. Diaries: You’ve probably seen people filling in data at the end of their gambling session, especially if you spend a lot of time in Vegas. They’re creating what’s known as a “diary” or a written record of their session results. The exact information varies from person-to-person, but typical headings are date, location, machine played and amount won or lost. Sometimes a casino provides a free diary so ask at the slot club desk. Win/Loss Statements: Most Arizona casinos will provide you with a record of your winnings and losses for the year at no charge. Be aware that you must be using your player’s card for them to have that data. Technology: There was a booth at the latest G2E (Global Gaming Expo) that keeps track of all data associated with your play. This means that casinos with this program are capable of handing you the informa-

tion, if requested, so there’s no need to keep a diary. This is an especially good thing if you’re gambling on a vacation, say a cruise ship, and unlikely to return.

The Tax Man Cometh

Audits: I’ve received notice of what’s called a CP2000 or paper gaming audit more than once. First, you might feel temporary anxiety (I did), but don’t panic. Simply start the process of gathering supporting documents as soon as possible and write an explanatory letter as well. I contacted my CPA and he offered assistance; however, I chose to submit the paperwork and letter on my own. The more data you are able to send the better your odds of settling the issue without owing money to either the state or federal government. Agent Coin Toss: Although I have had federal tax audits requiring I meet with an IRS agent, my gambling audits were CP2000’s and handled by mail. I have read numerous accounts of gaming audits written by others and I’m struck by inconsistencies. The more supporting documents you have the better you will do and you shouldn’t expect an audit if your winnings/losses are relatively low. Split Jackpots: If you and others are splitting a reportable amount you should ask for the form that allows you to claim the divided jackpot. That way one individual won’t unfairly be stuck with the tax liability. Final Thoughts: Getting a notice of a gambling or any other audit from your state or federal tax organization is never a reason to celebrate. However, it’s still a gray area as far as definitive laws and there are few experts outside of Nevada. The more documentation you can provide the better your odds of not owing anything more than you’ve already paid, often that’s zero. It’s never a good idea to pay more than you owe out of fear. If you want to donate then it’s perfectly legal to send Uncle Sam a check anytime the spirit moves you or, better yet, just give to your favorite charity. Linda Boyd - a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for Southern Gaming & Midwest Gaming and Travel, her book, “The Video Poker Edge” includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the 2012 Edition of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her You Tube video, also with ACG. The 2010 Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. ‘Masquerade’

‘Barbara’*

‘Identity Thief’*

A jester, who has been chosen to serve as a king’s double, must rule a land as if it were truly his own while the real king lies in a coma induced by an unknown poison. (NR - 132 minutes)

Nina Hoss plays a doctor working in 1980s East Germany who finds herself banished to a small country hospital. (PG-13 - 105 minutes)

Jason Bateman plays a mildmannered businessman who learns that his identity has been stolen and hits the road in an attempt to foil the thief - a deceptively harmless-looking woman (Melissa McCarthy). (R - 100 minutes)

Stan: Admittedly an avid watcher of foreign language films as they provide a cinematic window to those cultures so different than each of our own, ‘Masquerade’ had me mesmerized by the performance of Byung-hun Lee in the title roles. Yes, two roles, his performances as the king, and the court jester exemplify his talent as an actor. Adding to that, his continuing role of Storm Shadow in the ‘G.I. Joe’ franchise with G.I. Joe: Retaliation due in theaters in March, attests to the quality of his work as an actor. Don’t let the English subtitled film deter you from the pageantry, intrigue of the story, and lessons of loyalty no matter what station of life our own path takes us.(Grade: B+)

‘Side Effects’ Rooney Mara plays a woman whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by her psychiatrist (Jude Law) - intended to treat anxiety has unexpected side effects. Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones also star. (R - 120 minutes) Stan: Starting with the usual slow and deliberate pace that director Steven Soderbergh’s films are known for establishing, ‘Side Effects’ has the elements firmly set with subtle hints and clues along the way. As the excellent ensemble performances of the veteran cast, under the sure hand of Steven Soderbergh, firmly lays out the intricate details of the story, it definitely makes one

It is also quite clever so clever, in fact, that you may require some sort of prescription medication for the headache that you are guaranteed to develop as a result of trying to keep up with its incredibly

complex plot. Needless to say, director Steven Soderbergh’s latest cinematic effort is about so much more than what at first meets the eye. Bolstered by brilliant performances from its acting quartet and a story that is certain to unceasingly surprise viewers from beginning to end, this tough pill to swallow is worth the extra effort. BONUS FEATURE The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD or video-on-demand.

Actor Lucas Till (‘All Superheroes Must Die’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “All Superheroes Must Die,”Lucas Till plays Ben a.k.a Cutthroat - one of four superheroes who find themselves abducted by their arch nemesis and forced to compete in a series of challenges in order to save an abandoned town full of kidnapped innocent civilians. “Cutthroat is super fast. He is a slim guy, he talks fast, he is short-fused and he has ability with knives. But he was basically a sidekick. Whether you read comics or not, you are familiar with these relationships between the leader and the sidekick and the love interest and her affair with maybe someone else. And that is not even superheroes. That is just life. Ben filled the role of a sidekick who could never get past being a sidekick despite how much he really respected his leader. It is kind of the classic Batman/Robin/ Nightwing thing.” Lucas Till

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Adhir Kalyan (‘Rules of Engagement’) By Joseph J. Airdo The sitcom “Rules of Engagement” started its seventh season this week on television. Actor Adhir Kalyan, who rose to fame in 2007 upon appearing in the CW sitcom “Aliens in America” as a young Muslim student from Pakistan who is sent to live with a Christian family in Wisconsin as part of a foreign exchange program, joined the cast of “Rules of Engagement” in 2009. He plays Timmy, the personal assistant to David Spade’s character Russell. “Rules of Engagement” airs 7:30 p.m. Mondays on CBS. “There was no character on the page. There was not even an audition for this particular role. I believe that the show’s creator Tom Hertz was looking to bring in an additional character for David to play off of because his character was always the odd man out and either had to dip into the other two storylines or had the misfortune of going on yet another date with a beautiful woman. “So, I met with Tom Hertz, who was himself a fan of ‘Aliens in America.’ That is how he came to know about me. We sat down and discussed my doing a guest spot on the show to play this character who would come in and serve as an assistant and we would go from there. One episode became three, three became five and now I believe I am somewhere in the range of 57 episodes. “From the discussions that we had, I think Tom Hertz was inspired by the dynamic in ‘Arthur’ where John Gielgud was often left to take care of the rather rambunctious young man played by Dudley Moore. That is what I think fueled his inspiration for the dynamic between Russell and Timmy. “I was also asked to rewatch ‘The Remains of the Day,’ because he wanted Timmy to be the tight-lipped assistant who goes about his business without ever complaining. Of course, as the show evolved, Timmy has had his fair share of complaining and now sort of sticks it to Russell as much as he is able to.” – Adhir Kalyan

BY VAN MEANS

“True Grit” (2010): Damon does a fine, naturalistic job of reinventing LaBoeuf, the Texas Ranger played the first time by Glen Campbell. “Invictus” (2009): An Oscar nomination confirmed Damon’s excellence as a South African rugby team captain in Clint Eastwood’s drama. “Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007): Always amusing as the crime gang’s relative nerd, Damon is especially funny while paired with Ellen Barkin here. “Good Will Hunting” (1997): Not only convincing playing the high-IQ janitor, Damon (along with pal and co-star Ben Affleck) also shows his Oscar-winning writing skills here.

TACOS! TACOS! TACOS! El Palacio of Chandler to Host Inaugural Taco Eating Contest Saturday, February 16th Tacos, tacos, tacos! It’s all about the tacos at El Palacio Restaurant & Cantina of Chandler. On Saturday, February 16 they will find out just how many taco fans there are in the east valley. “Taco Tuesday is our busiest night of the week, tacos are just $1 and draft beers are $2. I’ve seen people come in and eat 10-15 tacos in one sitting. So, it got me thinking... I wonder just how many tacos someone could actually eat in a timed competition,” said Anthony Serrano, owner and executive chef at El Palacio. The competition starts at 4 p.m. with a $10 buy in. The first 20 people to

sign up will have 5 minutes to eat as many ground beef tacos as they can. The person who eats the most will take home a belly full of tacos, a $75 cash prize, a trophy and bragging rights. Second place winner will get a $25 gift certificate to El Palacio. Two of the Serrano family’s other locations will also be participating in the Taco Eating Competition. Casa Serrano of Lake Havasu will host the competition on the same day and time as Chandler while Casa Serrano of Mohave Valley will host the competition on Sunday at 4 p.m. There will be a sign up sheet at all three locations beginning February 1st so you can lock in your spot in the competition! Two excellent dietary rules you should certainly memorize and follow, are to never eat anything that comes out of a vending machine. And if bacteria won’t eat it, we shouldn’t either. Here are some ideas for eating a complete breakfast at work or on the run. Remember: a stack of takealongs or other microwave-safe containers will make your life much easier. Wine Lover Valentine's Day Gifts iPad Wine at Arrowhead Grill By: @NathanBrugnone If your lover is also a wine lover, here are some sensual accoutrements to consider for February 15th! I mean 14th! •

Decanter: For anyone who likes big red wines, a decanter is a must. Decanters resemble flower vases with large, round bases. Your local wine shop will be able to point you in the right direction. Corkscrew: While some have mastered the opening of wine with a shoe, you will do much better with a corkscrew. From manual units to fully-automated countertop appliances, there are many makes, models, and brands to choose from. Wine Refrigerator: Nothing says, “I’m patient, discerning, and passionate,” like a wine refrigerator. Temperature-controlled units start at around $70 dollars and will help your wine stay

healthy through the Phoenix summer months. •

Aerator: This little device opens up tight wines, bringing out the full expressiveness and personality of each. Resembling a clear egg that comes to a hollow point at one end, aerators can be found at most major wine retailers. Wine: Of course, you could do the obvious— and courteous thing— andspecially wrap a nice bottle. If you do not know what kind of wine to get, get two very different wines: a Merlot (gaining popularity recently) and a Chardonnay, a Muscat and a Bordeaux, a Washington Malbec and an Arizona Sauvignon Blanc.

Whether it’s“dinner and a bottle “or “movie and a glass,”a wine-themed Valentine’s Day makes a memory that lasts.

Arrowhead Grill is using Apple iPads to revolutionize the world of wine tasting. The new technology allows wine lovers to explore and delve into the world of wine and expertly paired foods any day of the week at one of the West Valley’s best-known gourmet steakhouses, Arrowhead Grill. Arrowhead Grill’s new Apple iPads, powered by UNCORKD, a program developed to act as private sommelier, guides wine enthusiasts on a journey through their wine cellar, naming each wine, its regional origin and type, and describing its history and flavor. Patrons can even order a glass or bottle from their seats.

To be among the first to embark on a self-guided wine tour at Arrowhead Grill, wine enthusiasts and interested novices can call (623) 566-2224 or make a reservation online at ArrowheadGrill.com/ Reservations. Arrowhead Grill 8280 W. Union Hills Dr. (Loop 101 and Union Hills) in Glendale. Twitter.com/ArrowheadGrill Facebook.com/ArrowheadGrill.

Wine enthusiasts and novices alike can also explore wine and food pairings, especially conceived at Arrowhead Grill, to enhance the experience and fully reveal each wine’s flavor. “This is a wonderful way to explore wine,” said Chef Charles Schwerd, owner of Arrowhead Grill. “Wine lovers can browse through the selections, choose their favorite wine or find new wines they’d love to try, based on region, type, vintner and reviews.” According to Schwerd, the new Apple iPad-based wine menus are perfect for novices as well. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, even the novice wino can impress his date, by choosing the perfect wine pair with her meal! Arrowhead Grill’s interactive wine menus provide pairing suggestions for each of their most popular entrees. “Wine lovers can also compose their own wine tasting right from their seats,” said Schwerd. The new wine menus allow patrons to select different suggested

BEER ACTIVITIES Craft beer continues to make more of an impression in our everyday lives. What was once just a fun drink has become a way of life for some people. As it often goes with this sort of thing, craft beer aficionados have found ways

to integrate their passion into other areas. We now have the opportunity to spend a day on a bus touring breweries, attend countless beer festivals and even get married in a beer themed ceremony.

February 6th, 2013 - February 12th, 2013

Beer festivals have been around for many years, but never before have they been as popular as they are now in Arizona. Five years ago you could count the number of festivals in the state on one hand. Now, you need both hands and both feet

and still won’t get them all. The festival widely recognized as the best in the state, The Strong Beer Festival, takes place on February 16th at Steele Indian School Park and will, once again, achieve new

Strong Beer Festival also serves as the start of Arizona Beer Week. We will have more information on that next week. For details on both festivals check out www.azbrewguild.com.

Back to Strong Beer, the lineup will be outstanding with a variety of beers including core brands as well as specialty releases. For those of you that prefer a little less strength in your beer, the Brewers Guild has encouraged many brewers to bring something lower in ABV as well. Some of the beers you can expect to taste include Alaskan Hopothermia, SkaVinifera Stout, Great Divide Peach Grand Cru, New Belgium Chocolate Coffee Stout, Lost Coast Baltic Porter, Crispin Prepare to Die, Petrus Aged Red and North Coast Brother Thelonious. Several breweries will have special tappings but the most intriguing may be

messages - about beer of course! “We hope you have a flavorful experience with Arizona Brewery Tours,” said local-owner and beer guide John “Hoppymoto” Alvarado, “And a whole lot of fun. We’d like to think we are creating a new crowd of craft beer lovers - and providing a service to the local Hop Heads as well.” HOP-ON tours are available weekly and usually visit 3 breweries in the course of four hours. It’s the easiest and most popular way to learn about brewing, visit unique breweries; while enjoying killer craft

beers and food, of course. Private tours are available to create an experience that is perfect for you and your guests, and to get even further into our local craft brew biz. “Arizona has a lot to offer - fun, sun, sports - and a heckuva lot of good brews,” said co-owner Johnny Boi, “you need to check them all out and see what’s brewing. It would be killer to go to a spring training game and then spend your evening tasting craft beers.” Weekly tours began at the first of the year, and private tours have already included a fundraiser for

What about getting married in a beer themed ceremony? Well, people do it and we have a local ordained minister in Phoenix who will craft a special ceremony for the hoppy couple blending traditional with a couple’s love of beer. The end result is a slightly whimsical ceremony that allows for a truly memorable wedding day. For example, the traditional unity

I feel like Fountain Hills is a place that a lot of people don’t care to venture out to, but there are actually some really cool spots out there. Saddle Bronc Grill is not exactly anything fancy, but definitely a good time. They have happy hour seven days a week from 3:30-6:30 with: dollar off drafts, house wine, and well, along with half off select appetizers. However, they have awesome daily specials on top of the happy hour which I like more. They have a wing Wednesday but it’s actually on a Monday! Ha! A taco Tuesday with roasted white fish tacos with the chefs’ special sauce for $5, wine Wednesday with half off bottles of wine and you can play poker!! All you need is a cigar and you would be good to go. On Fridays they do fish fry, corona beer battered cod for only $10. This place may seem a little random, well very random, but it is a lot of fun to hang out at especially if you want to try somewhere new in a little town. Besides, Fountain Hills have one of the world’s largest man made fountains! 11056 N. Saguaro Blvd. Fountain Hills, AZ 85268
