Since 1955 the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has set the pace in the Arabian horse world. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show was a ďŹ rst class show from the very ďŹ rst day. It has grown from 50 horses to nearly 2400 horses bringing top owners, trainers and breeders from around the world competing for a chance at winning. February 15-16 at Tempe Center for the Arts In a world where people focus on instant gratification and self-preservation, we often forget that the actions we take today have a lasting impact on our tomorrows. How can the actions of one person affect all of humanity? Can a simple change in thinking lead us to minimize the damage we are doing to ourselves - and each other?” Phoenix-based EPIK Dance Company presents “EPIK Effect,” a dynamic new stage presentation that explores the relationship we have with the world in which we live. On a sultry summer day in Richmond, Va. – the Confederate capital during the Civil War – a film crew has gathered at a historic building refitted to look like a telegraph office. The scene being shot features Abraham Lincoln (Billy Campbell) receiving a message and then discussing it with Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Graham Beckel). Despite the sweltering heat, the bearded men wear waistcoats and jackets, and the women are decked out in period dresses, with corsets. The only person who seems comfortable is local actor Benjamin Perkinson, with his little suit and slicked-back hair, as Lincoln’s young son, Tad. In production is “Killing Lincoln,” set to air Sunday, Feb. 17, on National Geographic Channel, a two-hour mix of drama and documentary based on the best-selling “historical thriller” of the same name by Fox News Channel anchor Bill O’Reilly and historian/researcher Martin Dugard. Tom Hanks narrates. Executive producers for the project are brothers Ridley and the late Tony Scott. The other scene being shot in the small building – crammed with cameras, crew and cast – is between Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth (Jesse Johnson, son of actor Don Johnson) and his sister, Asia (Sara Eshleman). It features Booth singing a song whose lyrics were uncovered during research for the movie. It’s a sad scene, in which Asia realizes that her brother’s fanaticism will ultimately be his undoing. A bit later on, when the crew breaks for lunch, Beckel – who has just arrived that day and isn’t entirely sure what channel this movie will air on – gets to meet Johnson for the first time. He’s flabbergasted by his resemblance to the real Booth. Blue-eyed Johnson – who grew a mustache and has his blond hair dyed dark for the role – pulls up a photograph on his phone to show Beckel the inspiration for his look. “Man, you’re perfect,” Beckel says to Johnson. “Which one’s you? You’re perfect. You’ve got the swagger.” “Yeah, man,” says Johnson. “I’m really excited that you’re on this project. You don’t know me, but I know you.” Beckel has a personal connection to the Lincoln assassination story. “My great-grandfather was in Ford’s Theatre the night that Lincoln got killed,” he explains. “I’m very close to this story.” He’s also done some reading about the theory that Stanton was, if not complicit in the assassination, not exactly ignorant of it. “Booth put a bullet in Lincoln’s head,” says Beckel. “But it was something that Stanton damn well knew about. But he didn’t want him to go to the theater. He was ambivalent about it. “His fingerprints are all over it, only because he knew ... but he didn’t know Booth. Stanton had spies all over the country. He was aware of it, and he knew what the motives were.”

APACHE GOLD CASINO TO ADD 2ND LOCATION

Apache Gold Casino Resort - Globe, Arizona – 40 miles north of the Dudleyville casino site. The San Carlos Apache Tribe is pleased to announce that the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council approved a second gaming site near the Aravaipa area of Arizona. The site is just East of Highway 77 at Milepost 127 between Mammoth and Dudleyville and lies within the south western boundary of the San Carlos Apache Reservation. This location is just 39 miles north of Catalina, Arizona in the far north suburbs of Tucson and just another 12 miles south to Ina Road and Oracle in north Tucson. Under the 2003 State Gaming Compact, the San Carlos Apache Tribe is allocated two class III gaming facilities. The San Carlos Apache Tribe, in exercising its inherent sovereign rights, has selected the Dudleyville, Arizona site as the second Class three gaming facility. The Tribe is planning on opening a temporary facility in 2014 that will house up to 400 slot machines, 10 to 12 table games, including live poker and a small lounge and restaurant. Future plans include building a permanent full service resort facility at this location that will include hotel and convention space. This project will bring much needed economic benefits to the Tribe and the surrounding

communities by providing 400 plus permanent jobs and millions of dollars of new revenue to the region. It is expected that employment opportunities will be available for tribal members and the local communities starting in early 2014 including construction jobs, as well as numerous permanent jobs. The Tribe is excited to put this project back on track after the economic down turn of 2008 forced the postponement of the second casino site. The long term economic benefits for the Tribe and surrounding communities cannot be understated. The San Carlos Apache Tribe looks forward to working with local communities as planning and construction move ahead. The anticipated opening of the temporary casino is currently scheduled for the first half of 2014. The construction of a larger permanent facility will follow soon after the opening of the temporary facility. The Tribe will be holding community meetings prior to construction to better communicate the plan and long term growth opportunities for the region that this facility will bring. About the Film

“The Twilight Saga” - starts off innocently enough, telling a tale of teenage love with a paranormal twist, but eventually escalating into a massively melodramatic movie in which witches... sorry, casters, per their preference... shout at one another about familial affairs. (Grade: D)

Alden Ehrenreich plays a young man longing to escape his small town while Alice Englert plays a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town. (PG-13 - 100 minutes) Stan: Having a moderate interest in the ‘The Twilight’ films, not because of story content rather the adolescent themes that are the base of those films, writer/director Richard LaGravenese presents an intriguing supernatural story centering on the mystics of the ‘light’ and the ‘dark’ side powers and the catalysts for choicesby the young lovers that will set in motion the path for their futures and those in their orbit. (Grade: C+) Joseph: “Beautiful Creatures” is yet another silly supernatural soap opera - this time spoken in awkward southern accents. The new romantic drama - which is based on the bestselling book of the same title by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and brought to the big screen by writer/ director Richard LaGravenese likely in an attempt to replicate the commercial success of

A British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War in an operation later known as the ‘Czech Kindertransport’. When the 26 film screeners began reviewing nearly 1,000 films for the 19th annual Sedona International Film Festival, they were very clear on one point: “We didn’t want to know who made the film so we wouldn’t be influenced one way or the other,” said Sagan Lewis, who chairs the selection committee. “We just wanted to judge the films on their own merit.” The result was 159 films for the weeklong Festival, Feb. 23 to March 3. larger number of short films that the committee matched up with the larger and longer films. “There were many short films that we felt were important to show,” Lewis explained. “We try to match the short films thematically with the larger films and this year we had a great number that afforded us that opportunity.” The lineup also includes a number of films with Arizona connections, among them five films from the Sedona Film School (formerly the Zaki Gordon Institute) ranging from Avenue Rats Lost Downtown to the comedy Dinner with Alex and Kate to Dead West about zombies and cowboys. Other Arizona connections include Orchestrating Community, a film about the Flagstaff City Orchestra and Vectors of Autism, the fascinating story of a Cornville resident Laura Nagle’s 57-year journey with Asperger’s Syndrome. In between is a Family Series of movies including the Disney classic, Mary Poppins; an Australian award-winning film, Red Dog, a true story; and even

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III’ Charlie Sheen plays a graphic designer whose enviable life slides into despair when his girlfriend breaks up with him. Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and Patricia Arquette also star. (R - 86 minutes) Stan: Writer/director Roman Coppola’s presentation of a mind sliding in and out of emotions, mental turmoil, reflecting on the highs and lows of life, the use of eclectic seemingly unrelated sequences, and within any given scene set piecessuch as glowing clocks and over sized items in the background, delivers a disjointed and surrealistic ‘glimpse inside the mind’ of the central character. Interestingly, it brought to mind Alfred Hitchcock’s classic psychoanalytic dream sequence in ‘Spellbound’ (1945) designed by myfavorite artist Salvador Dali and my quirky fascination with time. The room where I’m writing this review has six clocks in it… The final scene where cast and crew play to the camera brings one back to the reality of living our lives, and surprisingly, feeling good about it.(Grade: B) Joseph: I imagine that watching

“A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” is exactly like actually experiencing a glimpse inside the mind of anybody on the face of this planet random, fleeting and surreal. Granted, Mr. Swan’s noggin is home to things that are arguably much more bizarre not to mention perverse - than those found in most other people’s brains, but the streamof-consciousness-like method with which writer/director Roman Coppola explores said contents does not lend itself to any coherence, purpose or insight whatsoever. The film’s only saving grace is its star Charlie Sheen, who - for better or for worse - was seemingly born to play this particular character. (Grade: D)

‘Safe Haven’*

‘Saving Lincoln’*

Julianne Hough plays a young woman with a mysterious past who lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower (Josh Duhamel) forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her. (PG-13 - 115 minutes)

Lea Coco plays President Abraham Lincoln’s selfappointed bodyguard U.S. Marshal Ward Hill Lamon - a banjo-playing Southerner who foiled repeated attempts on the president’s (Tom Amandes) life and kept him functioning during the darkest hours of the Civil War. (NR - 100 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘A Good Day to Die Hard’* Bruce Willis reprises his role as John McClane who this time travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son (Jai Courtney) only to discover that said son is a CIA operative working to prevent a nuclearweapons heist, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces. Oscar Nominated Director: Behn Zeitlin ~ ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’

Oscar Nominated Director: Nikolaj Arcel ~ ‘A Royal Affair’ By Stan Robinson With drama and intrigue at its finest, in the film ‘A Royal Affair’,director/writer Nikolaj Arcel presents the 18th century story that changed the course of history of Denmark. Capturing the essence of the period, it’s like being transported back in time to experience history first hand. With English subtitles, don’t let that deter you from viewing the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar® at the 85th Academy Awards® on February 24, 2013 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and hosted by Seth MacFarlane. Alicia Vikander plays a young queen who, married to mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), falls secretly in love with her physician (Mads Mikkelsen). Together, they start a revolution that changes a nation forever. Director Nikolaj Arcel shares insight on bringing the story to the screen. “’A Royal Affair’ had been ‘cooking’ for a long time because for Danish people it’s a very famous story! Its one of the big ‘Holy Grails’ of films, that has never been done. It’s obviously a true story, and a very important piece of Danish history. I had always thought about why nobody had done a film about it, and then at one point I simply had the time to sit down and start reading all the books about the subject, and doing the research became so fascinated I was hooked and couldn’t let go! There was no turning back and I spent about year writing the script. “Good point Stan, as a writer it is very liberating to just deliver a script to another director, especially if you trust that director. I like that and still do that, and often I write for other directors. But there’s something special

By Stan Robinson

about directing something that you’ve also written because you at least get to visualize, you get to actually go out and actually experience all those things that you have written down which is nice, and its not even so much a question of control as it is to try to follow through, we got this on page, now let me see if I can honor the script. “The key challenge with telling the story is to balance the budget with the ambition! We had a great deal of ambition, and we planned every single shot, I storyboarded a lot and planned it very thoroughly because you have sort of a Danish kind of budget and you just can’t make stuff up as you go along, you have to know exactly what kind of shots you need, what you really want. That was one of the big challenges to be very precise and also for the actors I think it was trying to figure out how to embody persons from the 18th century for a period film. “‘A Royal Affair’ is a beautiful love story, forbidden love, and a queen who falls in love with the king’s doctor which was lethal, and at the same time its about a doctor who gains power at the court and tries to change the entire nation for the better, which was also a big thing back then so it has a little bit of everything. It has politics, it has drama, it’s a love story, and it even has a crazy king as the ‘joker’ of the film and these elements make it quite universal!” – Nikolaj Arcel

In a year when the higher profile films seemed to have a firm hold on Oscar®, cowriter/director Behn Zeitlin’s smaller film has risen to be become a contender with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Quvenzhané Wallis one of the youngest in Oscar® history, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ visually presents the differences of the two worlds of living in a ‘water themed’ society known as New Orleans’ area called the Bathtub and ‘land based’ lifestyles surrounding it, director/co-writer Behn Zeitlin merge’s the elements of his short film and co-writer Lucy Alibar’s stage play ‘Juicy and Delicious’ delivering a poignant view of fatherhood, community, and survival as the ‘metaphoric beastly’ elements threaten to severely alter their very existence. An outstanding performance by Quvenzhané Wallisas the 6-yearold girl is the catalyst that captures our hearts as her story unfolds.Faced with her father’s (Dwight Henry) fading health and environmental changes that release an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs, a 6-year-old girl (Quvenzhané Wallis) leaves her Delta-community home in search of her mother. ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ stirred my heart and when the opportunity of chatting with co-writer and director Behn Zeitlin, I didn’t hesitate! “The way we got our film made is we had these guys who saw my short and were interested in what we were going to do next. We told them that we have a film in mind but we are not going to be able to explain it to you, you gotta just come down to New Orleans, come hang out with us in a bar and we’ll just talk about the movie all night. There’s no real way to sum it up in like a sentence. We got kind of ‘down and dirty’ with them, explaining and talking about that this is what this film is going to feel like, its this mixture of lifestyles, about all these very human stories, a film that’s hopeful, about all these things that are huge political and social issues but its not a political or social issue film, its like a folk tale about emotion and these incredibly vibrant characters that are going to defy getting pushed out of their homes, and they are going to do it not by violence but by banding together and refusing to let one another go, transcending race and politics. The title comes from drawing parallels between these giant creatures that are coming to destroy, these untamable, incredibly strong, powerful, creatures that are psychological hurdles that the characters face in the film.” – Behn Zeitlin

If you’ve ever found yourself in a European train station early in the morning, you’ll know that having a beer with breakfast isn’t out of the ordinary for some. In fact, beer has a rich history at breakfast, dating back to the 19th century. Thinking of beer as nutritious might be a stretch, but adding a pint to your breakfast table could mean for a spectacular pairing. Beer, nourishment aside, is a livelier companion. In fact, paired with morning foods such as

oatmeal or granola, unexpected flavors emerge like green tea and chocolate milk. Coffee beers are an obvious choice, some brewers flavor ales with maple syrup. A home brewing expert in Texas has even experimented with bacon. You needn’t be that literal, however. Just think of your morning beer as a side of toast, in a glass. Hey, it’s Beer Week! Cheers to that!

BEER WEEK IS BACK!! Beer Week Baby!!! It is the one week a year when we get to indulge in as many different events, and meet as many different beer people as we possibly can. Take vacation, call in sick, order up a limo for the week, but do whatever you have to do to make sure that you are ready to make the most out of Arizona Beer Week. This is the third year for the event and each year it gets better and better. Since this is going to be a long article, let us dispense with the usual banalities and get right into some of the highlights.

Beer Week officially starts on February 16th with the Strong Beer Festival. While the whole week is presented by the Arizona Brewers Guild, this is their real moment to shine. Without question this is the top festival in the state as brewers come from near and far, each looking to outdo the other with some rare goodies. For example, expect to enjoy these goodies: Alaskan Hopothermia, Breckenridge Well Built ESB, Abita Louisiana Oyster Stout (yes oysters), Bell’s Hopslam (and look for a special tapping of Bourbon Barrel Batch 9000), College Street Brother Dewey’s Date Night, Peche Mel, Hop Ruiter, Petrus Sour Red Ale, Grand

Canyon Shaggy Bock, Great Divide Peach Grand Cru, SanTanHopFarm Belgian IPA, Sonoran Figmentation (collaboration with Fate Brewing and O.H.S.O Nano Brewery), Big Sky OldeBluehair, both of the Crispin Princess Bride ciders, Left Hand Beer Week Sauce…and so much more. For details on this festival and to buy tickets, head over to http:// arizonabeerweek.com/13th-annualarizona-strong-beer-festival/. VIP tickets for this event sold out in about two days, so don’t miss out on your chance to get in the door. Designated Driver tickets are also available and for those of you that get nervous at the thought of strong beer, they Guild encourages brewers to bring plenty of lower ABV beer as well. If you are looking to get a little nutrition in you before the festivities start, hit up Angels Trumpet Ale House at 2nd and Roosevelt for their special brunch featuring SanTan beers at a great price. The brunch starts at 10:00 so you have plenty of time to make it to the festival even if you have VIP tickets. Do you know those folks that just can’t wait for Christmas morning? Sure you do. Well some of those same folks can’t wait for the 16th to start Beer Week. Those are the ones that are kicking things off early on Friday night. Look for Mellow Mushroom in Happy Valley to tap a special keg of Candela, a Rye based beer that was a collaboration between Green Flash and Cigar City. If you are in the Arcadia area, check out O.H.S.O’ Local Firkin night. Plenty of great Arizona beers served in the traditional cask method. If education is your interest, Whole Foods in Chandler will have their weekly Beer School featuring New Belgium and Left Hand Brewing beers. The real bonus here is that Left Hand founder, Eric Wallace will be a guest professor. Finally, if you like the late nights, Public House Garage has a SKA Brewing Pinstripe Promo starting at 8:30. There are also people that don’t want the party to end. That’s okay because

there are three after parties Saturday night following the Strong Beer Festival. O.H.S.O. has a Colorado Beer Night and once again Eric Wallace

great chance to try it. No other import arrives fresher and tasting more like it does in its hometown. But there is more, Taste of Tops has a Lost Coast Promo (and we hear Lost Coast has sent some special beers for the week), Sun Devil has an Abita SpecTAPular, Oskar Blues has a Brewski Ball Tournament at Little Woody and a promo at Coach and Willies. Finally, if you need something to eat, Ska will be the featured beer at a beer dinner at Mellow Mushroom CityNorth and the ubiquitous Eric Wallace will host a Left Hand dinner at new favorite Pig and Pickle in Scottsdale.

Sunday is a great day for exercise and SanTan Brewing has a bike pub crawl that leaves the brewery around Noon. Also at Noon, T.T. Roadhouse will be the starting point for a Scottsdale bike pub crawl. If you are more into keeping the festival going, head over to Boulders on Broadway for their annual Beer Fest. Smaller than the Strong Beer, but more intimate, spend some time chatting with the various brewery reps and enjoying a mellow afternoon in Tempe.

Tuesday keeps the ball rolling and one of the feature events has to be the Beer and Cheese Pairing Class at World of Beer. Teaming up with Global Beer Network and Wedge and Bottle Cheese Shop, the folks at WOB have an amazing six course pairing menu.

Things heat up on Monday with Magic Hat and Pilsner Urquell teaming up at

BEER! SECTION New Albion Brewing, History In The Making, Again! BY “KING” JAMES SWANN Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s take a minute to turn back the clock and have a look at NewAlbion, the brewery many credit with starting the craft beer movement way back in Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Six. Founded by Jack McAuliffe with an eye on small batch high quality ales, New Alboin had a small but dedicated following of beer enthusiasts and curious locals. One such local resident was none other than beer legend and Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman. Coincidence? I don’t think so! As Jack’s business began to grow he quickly realized that banks, investors and lenders of that era hadn’t yet come round to his way of thinking and was our economy began to falter so did the disposable income of the local residents. It wasn’t long before the doors were closed and the brewery equipment was sold off to cover the expenses. Fast forward to Two Thousand and Twelve and Jim Koch, inventor of Sam Adams and head of the Boston Beer Company locates Jack McAuliffe with a proposition. Let’s take it from the top and do it all over again! Using the very same malt bill, cascade hops and even the original yeast strain, Jack and Jim have recreated New Albion Ale but only for a limited time.

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com

I have been told by local Boston Beer representative Jason Rojas that proceeds from the sale of this brew will go to benefit Jack as he had fallen hard times after the demise of his brewery. I can’t think of a better benefactor than the man credited with starting it all. Look for New Albion Ale in six packs and on tap at all of your favorite craft beer destinations and taste a bit of American history. Until Next Week, Cheers!

BEER! SECTION 34

...continued from Page 32. This event will sell out. Don’t worry there is more, Bell’s will take over a few taps at Mellow Mushroom Happy Valley and North Coast will be tapping three amazing beers including the very limited Barrel Aged Old Rasputin. Green Flash will be the featured guest at a beer dinner at Windsor. Also look for Left Hand Brewing at Taste of Tops and a Craft Beer Tasting at Priceless Primetime on Dobson in Chandler. Is it Wednesday already? How’s the liver doing? Hope you ordered a spare…I prefer an external USB liver as it is easiest to work with. But I digress…Don’t think you get a break just because it is Hump Day. Speaking of breaks, did you know that Lucky Break in Tempe has a pretty good beer list? New Belgium will be manning some taps there for a fun event. Draw 10 in Phoenix has an Evening in Colorado where you may see some of the stars of the Colorado craft beer industry in attendance. Oskar Blues has two events going on both starting at 6:00. Up in Grayhawk they are taking on SanTan in a taste challenge at Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers, but don’t worry the real winner here is you. Also, the folks from Longmont will be at Angels Trumpet for Slippery Trumpet night. If you are a bicycle rider, this is a great stop. Slippery Pig Bike Shop will be in attendance doing

mini bike tune-ups and will host a short night ride starting at 6:00. For those of you who prefer to stay and drink, there will be plenty of Oskar Blues on tap. As a bonus, Chad and Jeremy from the brewery will be on hand. More fun can be had at Flanny’s Craft Brewer Trivia Night where your favorite craft brewers will take you on in a trivia contest. Ground Control in Litchfield Park hosts Veronica from Bells in a SpecTAPular while Boulders on Broadway has New Belgium Wild Night with a plethora of sour beers on tap. Wrap up your night with the Mayor of Lodo, Tebo from Breckenridge and a nice cigar/beer pairing at Fox Cigar Bar, or step it up a notch and stop by Yucca Tap Room for Beer and Burlesque. Ska handles the beer part and the rest is left to Breezi and The Deviant Dames. Thursday has some big time events including Beer Dinners at Trophy’s and Cave & Ives. The former features the beers of Big Sky while the latter is an Abita Brewing Louisiana Fest. Mellow Mushroom in CityNorth will be tapping a variety of Rare Beers including Bell’s Hopslam, Oskar Blues G’Rauch, Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin and more. Abita also will be giving away some swag at Casey Jones Grill with a Name That Tune Challenge, and Whole Foods on Mayo has a night in Longmont with both Oskar Blues and Left Hand Brewing being featured. And, Flanny’s hosts their annual Colorado Firkin Festival with seven amazing firkins prepared especially for this event. TGIF because we are finally winding down Beer Week. As usual Friday night is one for big events. Whole Foods on Mayo offers up a mead dinner featuring the amazing honey wines from Redstone Meadery. Moto has a Limited Release Tapping, filling their taps with some beers that you may not find anywhere else. Papago Brewing will teach you about Sour beers with some amazing sours from New Belgium presented by brewer Eric Salazar. This will roll right into the annual Shuffleboard tournament where many of the suppliers show up to compete for a coveted trophy. They all bring great beer to enjoy and it is a great chance to relax with them. Two big tap takeover events are also going on. Boulders on Broadway has a Great

If you are still standing on Saturday morning, you can head over to Arcadia Tavern for Bars on Bikes. Bring your bike and hit up five fantastic bars finishing up back at Arcadia Tavern for a barbecue. If you are not up for riding, how about learning about bike maintenance? Handlebar and Grill offers Bikes, Brews, Bloodys and Brats which is exactly what it sounds like…a little bit of everything featuring New Belgium. At Angels Trumpet, it is an Afternoon in Belgium where you can enjoy some outstanding Belgian beers on the patio. Left Hand brewing hosts a Cornhole Tournament up in Anthem at Legends Saturday night and a promo at 1st Round Draft in Gilbert. Bison Witches hosts a combination canned beer promo and food drive. This event features the incredible trio of Big Sky (Big Don), Ska (Arlo, the Barroom Hero) and Breckenridge (Tebo, the Mayor of LoDo) and if you bring two canned food items for St. Mary’s Food Bank you get your first beer for a penny. Afterwards, the same three brewers will be featured in the Finale, a pub stroll down Mill stopping at random bars, spreading joy and goodwill wherever they leave…I mean go. 2nd Annual Eccentric Café at The Hungry Monk to feature 20 Bell’s Beers on Tap February 22nd from 3pm – Midnight!

Bell’s Brewery has an annual tradi tion of hosting Eccentric Day at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo, MI. This fun, offbeat, crazy kind of party allows patrons and staff alike to dress up in crazy costumes, eat food and drink a wide variety of Bell’s beer. There’s only one rule, come in a costume or don’t come at all. That tradition, now in its second year, is continued during Ari zona Beer Week at The Hungry Monk in Chandler. Last year, Eccentric Café was a huge hit during Arizona Beer Week and this year The Hungry Monk will do it all again on Friday, February 22 from 3pmmidnight and featuring more than 20 of Bell’s Brewery beers including special tappings of Black Note and Bourbon Barrel Cherry Stout. Some of the other Bell’s Brewery beers featured at the Eccentric Café include Hopslam Ale, Le Batteur, Le Pianiste, Expedition Stout, Amber Ale, Kalamazoo Stout, Oatmeal Stout, Oberon Ale, Smitten Ale and many more. So, dig out your best costumes and head down to The Hungry Monk on Friday, February 22 from 3pmmidnight for this very special event. For more info, be sure to “like” The Hungry Monk on Facebook, http://www. facebook.com/thehungrymonk. Special Tapping Schedule is as follows: Black Note (6:30 p.m.) - One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell’s history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark. 11.5% abv. 100% of the proceeds from Black Note will benefit the American Heart Association. Bourbon Barrel Cherry Stout (7:30 p.m.) - Aged in freshly retired bourbon barrels for 6-8 months, this beer takes Bell’s Cherry Stout to a new level. Introducing the oaky, vanilla notes of bourbon to an already heady mix of tart cherries and dark, roasted malts, this stout seduces the palate. Bourbon Barrel Aged Cherry Stout has been made for draft on a handful of occasions over the years and bottled once. 11.0% abv. Benefiting the Chandler Fire Department, this Head-To-Head Spicy Throwdown is Going to Heat Things Up at The Hungry Monk - Better Bring the Fire Hose! Arizona Beer Week is coming and Oskar Blues Brewery has an abundance of beer-tastic events planned from February 16-23. Oskar Blues’ main event is the Dale’s Pale Ale Chili CookOff on Tuesday, February 19 at The Hungry Monk in Chandler. You’re gonna need a bigger bowl for the Dale’s Pale Ale Chili CookOff when local chili chefs and the Chandler Fire Department bring their best chili recipes for a chance to claim the Bigger Bowl trophy. In this spicy throwdown, chefs and service men will heat things up in the kitchen and then serve samples of their chili to patrons from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19. Guests will have a chance to vote for their favorite chili and then order a “bigger bowl” from the special chili menu. A portion of the proceeds from each bowl sold will support the Chandler Fire Department. The Dale’s Pale Ale Chili CookOff contestants will be required to use two ingredients—Dale’s Pale Ale and Oskar Blues Brewery’s own Hops and Heifers farm-raised beef. Both will be provided courtesy of Oskar Blues Brewery. The beef comes directly from the Oskar Blues sustainable farm. More info here:http://www. oskarblues.com/restaurant/hopsheifers-farm. ASH Presents the Brewer’s Cocktail - Hot Scotchy Night at the Hungry Monk

The Hungry Monk, 1760 W Chandler Blvd #2, Chandler, AZ 85224 Enter the secret world of the brewer with a cocktail whose origins remain shrouded in mystery. The Hot Scotchy is among the rarest of drinks--sold for the first time in Arizona last year during Arizona Beer Week. Fans packed The Hungry Monk and Moto to get a sip of the Hot Scotchy. This year, the Arizona Society of Homebrewers (ASH) is bringing it back bigger and better.

The Scotchy is made (perhaps clandestinely in professional circles) by collecting a pint of the hot unfermented concentrated malt sugar of a beer mash (wort) and topping it off with a few ounces of Scotch. This may seem like a simple arrangement until you recall the many varieties of Scotch. Multiply that number by the thousands of grain combinations that comprise the 90 beer styles recognized by the

In the Middle Ages, beer was the everyday all day drink of choice for men, women and children. In the 1600’s, midwives created “Groaning Ale.” It was a special ultrastrong beer meant to ease the pain of childbirth.

The first “pilsner” beer was created in Pilsen, Bohemia, hence the name, in 1842. Now over 90% of the beer produced worldwide is pilsner beer.

Pull tabs on beer cans showed up in 1963 and lasted until 1975 when they were fazed out in favor of the more environmentally friendly stay tabs. The Babylonians (circa 1800 B.C.) had more than 20 different varieties of beer according to clay tablet recipes found by archeologists in northern Syria.

, BET YOU DIDN T KNOW

In A. D. 1200, it was customary throughout Europe to baptize children with beer.

One of the very first acts of the Continental Congress was to issue rations of a quart a day of beer to all Revolutionary War soldiers.

Vikings were huge beer drinkers. They would even stop mid-battle for a beer break, drink huge quantities of beer, and then rejoin the bottle “bare shirt” - armor and shirts removed.

In 1774, British scientist Joseph Priestly discovered oxygen after pondering the source of the bubbles rising from a vat of beer.

The Babylonians (circa 1800 B.C.) had more than 20 different varieties of beer according to clay tablet recipes found by archeologists in northern Syria.

BEER! SECTION

, ARIZONA S MOST PASSIONATE BEER PEOPLE, THE NEW BREED! Hello again craft beer lovers. Today let’s make a list, a list of the newest movers and shakers in the ever growing community that is Arizona Beer. Again? Yet another list of the very same people everybody mentions in every list every bloody year? How blasé. NO friends this is NOT that list! This is a list of the new blood, the up and comers and the very reason younger drinkers are turning to craft beer and filling the pubs thick as thieves. This list is in no particular order and many of these names may be new to your eyes and ears but trust me when I say not for long and you “Heard It Here First”.

Billy Clayton First up is a bloke I have found myself quite fascinated with over the last twelve or so months. Billy Clayton, a lad I met at the Hungry Monk, what seems like yesterday, had a lot to say back then about his goals and what he would accomplish. Lots of people talk at the pub but this chap followed through. In a very short time Billy has become a certified Cicerone Beer Expert, passed the Certified Beer Judge Program test, helped open a craft beer pub and restaurant in Tempe called Handlebar and now works as a representative for Odell Brewing here in Arizona. Trust me when I say you will be seeing a lot of Billy in the coming year. I dunno what you think? Does He make the list? I’d say so!

44

Next up, another newcomer is John “Hoppymoto” Alvarado. For those unaware, John and his family run

John Alvarado and own AZ Brewery Tours LLC, a company dedicated to DRIVING you safe and soundly on tours of all of the hottest breweries and craft beer spots the valley has to offer. Most expeditions include transportation, lunch or dinner, lots of beer sampling and a behind the scenes look at what makes each of our amazing local breweries tick. In many cases you even get an introduction and Q&A time with the brew master. Wanna know more about craft beer all over Arizona? John is your man! Moving along as I’m now on a roll lets meet Steve McFate, owner of Scottsdale’s first locally owned microbrewery, FATE Brewing. Launched with the idea that even night club centric Scottsdale loves local brew Steve opened his doors with a small seven barrel (14 keg) system that allows him to constantly rotate his beer styles and brew to the tastes of the community in his own backyard. The philosophy here is fresh, fresh, fresh. If he’s going make new converts to craft beer the product has to be as crisp as possible and always in step with his audience. I love the slogan Steve and Fate have adopted: “It’s In Your Hands”. I think that says it all about why Steve is important.

scenes Landon and HDE represent and or market all of them here in the Grand Canyon State. In many instances Landon is the proverbial “man behind the curtain” and you’ll most likely never meet him as he keeps his head in his work and his personal life personal. Just know that as long as he stands guard over Arizona, craft beer and local breweries will continue to get noticed. Landon has also been a big supporter of Beer for Brains and the Arizona Society of Home Brewers helping to keep them firmly rootedto the ground.

Up to bat now is Tony Piccini owner of local independent beer distributor Pitcher of Nectar (POND). He may seem too many like a small player in the scope of beer distribution here in Arizona but is responsible for bringing us exciting new beer brands such as Ass Kisser, Ale Industries, Rubicon and new local breweries such as Cosmic and Borderlands. Tony and POND have also now acquired the highly sought after Shelton Brothers portfolio meaning we will see lots more beer from likes of Cantillon, Mikkeller, Jolly Pumpkin and all of those silly Bad Elf Christmas brews. Gotta love watching the small local guy flourish among so many giants, especially when it’s so good for our beer community. RAVE ON Tony, RAVE ON! Next up is Jess Harter owner and primary columnist of local news and information web site Mouth by Southwest or MXSW for short. Need your beer and Arizona culture news short and sweet? What’s going on and when? What day was that new beer release coming from Four Peaks and was the brewery dinner last night really worth the coin? Look no further than Jess and MXSW. Known for years

Landon Evans Ok, the first repeat offender on the list is Landon Evans, owner of HDE Agency in Phoenix Arizona. Who is this guy? Funny you should ask, ever heard of SanTan Brewing, Grand Canyon Brewing, Oskar Blues Brewing or the Ameri-Can Beer Festival? Good thing you have because behind the

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Rob Fulmer

as a food critic for the Tribune, Jess now has his own medium for the news in MXSW with one eye on local craft beer and happenings in the East Valley. Rob Fulmer president of the Arizona Society of Home Brewers has been quoted as saying “no one in this state writes more about local beer than Jess Harter”. I would tend to agree.

Ok, let’s move on to one of my favorites, John Paul Watts, General Manager at World of Beer in Tempe. Now if you’re thinking World of Beer is just big business, know this, it’s what John or “J.P.” as his friends know him brings to the tablethat makes it all so special. As a for instance there are always no less than Twenty Local Beers On Tap and J.P. has made sure to staff his bar with the cream of the crop of local beer gurus like Scott “HopHead Fred”, Patrick Schroeder of the Brew Bros. and New Times beer writer and Cicerone Zach Fowle. J.P. has also been a big supporter of local breweries Mudshark, Four Peaks and Sleepy Dog. Add this all up with his personal fondness of everything beer plus his ability to bring new drinkers in downtown Tempe into the craft brew fold and you have a man destined for local beer greatness. Since we mentioned Zach Fowle in the previous paragraph let’s move on to his resume. Zach is quite the busy lad when it comes to craft beer. In addition to being employed by and teaching “Beer Classes” at the aforementioned World of Beer, Zach also writes a regular column for the New Times and was one of the first certified Cicerone Beer Experts in Arizona. Another cool fact is that Zach’s writing ability garnered him an award from the Arizona Press Club for Best Human Interest Piece in 2010. Moreover, he has just returned from brewing at Odell in Fort Collins Colorado with a beer made just for AZ! All in all, one eye on beer education and the other on doing it creatively makesZach someone to know here in the valley if you have a passion for the art and science of beer.

Ian Hartwell Moving out to the west side it’s time to introduce Ian Harwell, a passionate craft beer master who lives on the other side of the tracks. Many of you may have never heard his name, but if you live out west Ian is your man. Currently employed at Ground Control, the first craft beer bar in Litchfield Park, Ian also moderates the Facebook site West Valley Beer Fanatics and is well known for his beer tastings and beer education at former employer Bevmo. If its craft beer way out west, you can bet Ian Harwell has his finger on the trigger and his pose’ in effect!

Jon Lane Heading into Phoenix let’s now talk about Jon Lane owner operator of OHSO a new craft beer bar and Phoenix’s first production Nano Brewery. Jon makes the list for a few great reasons. For starters he does indeed have a fully functioning three barrel (6 keg) Nano Brewery on site for brewing beer specifically tailored to his customer’s needs. 18 of his 36 beers on tap are always local and Jon is big on giving back to the community.

From fund raisers and his focus on all things local to free dog treats made from spent brewing grain, you really get the idea that Jon is about family, community and beer. Need I say more?

John Flanagan Jr.

Austin Santos Heading south it’s time to bring Tucson into the light as we meet Austin Santos. As part owner of 1702 Pizza next to University of Arizona, a pub with 52 craft brews on tap, Austin is a very big fish in what is now a rapidly growing pond. In my humble opinion, 1702 is the BEST Craft Beer Bar in Arizona regardless of location and it’s all down to Austin. His proximity to UofA also affords him the unique opportunity of teaching new drinkers what it means to enjoy craft. To give you an idea of this guy’s pullI have a short Anecdotefor you: Years ago while I was working as in house distribution for SanTan Brewing I came across Austin at a beer festival. He enjoyed our brew so much he made a few phone calls and took 20 or so kegs back with him. In a matter of days we had 6 new accounts in Tucson! The Point? When it comes to craft beer way down south, Austin Santos is the go to man and the fact that he owns the hippest craft beer location in the state doesn’t hurt either. Sticking with Tucson for one more go let’s meet John P. Gestautas another lad who lives south of the valley and certainly deserves mention in this register. As an employee of beer distributor Golden Eagle, his job is to teach his co-workers the fine art of craft brew. Paul was the first certified Cicerone Beer Expert in Tucson and also blogsand records weekly beer podcasts for 104.9FM ESPN Radio Tucson under the handle “Keg Keeper”. In his off time he can also be found working with local restaurants for the purposes of food pairing and beer dinners or speaking about bar management at NAU. I’d say this is one well rounded beer geek! How about you? Heading back to the Valley it’s time to chat about John Flanagan Jr. As managing partner and beer buyer at family owned, Tempebar Flanny’s,John and his father John Sr. have set the local craft world alight with monthly all out tap takeoversand a constantly rotating beer selection to die for. From locals like SanTan and Four Peaks to heavy hitters such as Port and Lost Abbey Brewing these guys leave no

stone unturned in their quest for the perfect selection of brews. Open for just less than two years Flanny’s is already a household name in every beer geeks little black book and much of that credit goes to John and his passion for all things brewed with barley.

Andrew Bauman

Now here’s a surprise! Next up is Andrew Bauman award winning home brewer and ever so patient teacher of this oldest of arts. When I say award winning, Andrew has garnered quite a few medals for his home brew in officially sanctioned competitions all around the state. That fact alone is interesting but what really makes Andrew important in this catalog is his talent for instruction. Andrew teaches (according to my research) the first officially city sponsored and endorsed home brew course in state of Arizona. Taking place in Chandler AZ. the course runs for 5 weeks and only costs $43.00! Best of all, this is a class for anyone and everyone over the age of 21 who wants to know more about this amazing pastime. Classes are forming now!

Not even open? Really? Bear with me here because the hype surrounding this brewery and its owner can’t be measured on the Richter scale! I personally know thirty or so people who have actually tasted the beer and the reviews have been strong but what’s amazing is the other thousand people almost willing to sell their first born child to get their hands on a bottle! A few cool facts, the beer will be brewed using many ingredients native to Arizona and Wilderness was the first brewery in Arizona to successfully run a Kick Starter Campaign. That kind of magic doesn’t happen every day and I hear the soft opening may come as early as April so stay tuned! Last but not least, rounding out the list is one more repeat offender from last year. Rob Fulmer, president of the Arizona Society of Home Brewers (ASH). Hmmm, where to begin, Rob, now in his third term (year) as president has brought massive growth to his organization and in turn to craft beer culture here in the valley. In working closely with the Arizona Brewers Guild and supporting local breweries all while keeping one close eye on the art form itself keeps him relevant on many levels. Promoting home brewing as well as the legitimacy of artisan beer at every stage and seeing these things as integral parts of each other has played a key role in why ASH is now the largest homebrew club in the United States and why everyone wants in on the fun!Due to Rob’s vision ASH are active participants in the Arizona Strong Beer festival, The Ameri-Can Beer festival and many other events with an eye on teaching the general public what it means to embrace craft and it’s culture. Whether it be bringing craft philosophy to the people or the people to craft philosophy, Rob is a man dedicated to the trade and always one step ahead.

BEER! SECTION

Now it’s time for some Girl Power! Kristine Bradley, known to many as Beer Kristine works here in Arizona for World Class, the craft beer division of local distributor Crescent Crown. In her capacity as a Beer Ambassador she has developed quite the following and has played pivotal roles in the development of the now famous tap takeovers at Flanny’s, in Beer Class on my own home turfand at the Hungry Monk as well. She’s now in charge of preaching the gospel of beer in downtown Tempe as thousands of new students from ASU flood the market each semester to listen. Kristine is a certified Cicerone Beer Server and also heads up Arizona Girls Pint Night Out, a group dedicated to bringing women into the craft beer fold and teaching everything from food pairing to history. Not too shabby eh?

So there they are the new breed, the up and comers, the ones to watch now and in the near future. By the way, from where I’m standing the future looks bright! Having said so, it’s time to thank those that have for many years fought the good fight to lead us to this point. People such as Chuck Knoll, Andy Ingram, Derek Osborne, Ron Kloth, Uwe Boer, Greg Eccles, Harold Sleeman, Anthony Canecchia, Teddy Golden and many more were our teachers and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say THANK YOU for showing us the way. Until Next Week, Keep Calm & Drink Well!

Moving on, I’m going out on a limb with this one but I have a strong feeling he will come good. Say hello to Jonathan Buford owner and master brewer of the soon to be open Wilderness Brewing. You may be thinking what?

Maybe it’s the butcher element or perhaps the dark décor, however I feel like this is somewhere a Tony Soprano type might frequent. Generous wine pours, a simple menu, and meat – lots of meat. This unusual marriage is made possible by Hobe meats, a local butcher offering a wide range of fresh meat since 1962.

The Blind Pig Butcher, dining, wine, cocktails and a dog friendly patio … I’m smitten with the Blind Pig (3370 N. Hayden Road, Suite 120, Scottsdale, 480-9902533). I’m almost ready to release a digital guide to Local Lily’s favorite dog friendly restaurants, boutiques and things to do with your pup. In the spirit of research ( I love my job ), I’ve been frequenting patio bars with my 100lb pooch, and have recently discovered this gem tucked behind a fountain at Hayden and Osborn. www. blindpigaz.com

The patio out front is framed by a simple gate and trickling fountain with plenty of room for my big bloodhound. I appreciate a patio that accommodates more than just purse-sized puppies.

• Mull It: This is a great time to mull some wine, since it has been chilly lately. Just gently heat some wine on the stove, and toss in a tea ball full of herbs and spices. Cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, saffron and even raisins make a good mulling blend. Get your hipster friends to come over with mullet wigs, put on some Whitesnake, take that wine, and mull it!

a pot. Remove and add onions and carrots to sauté.Deglaze the pot with liberal amounts of red wine. Return the beef and add some thyme, rosemary, beef stock, and tomato puree. Bring to a boil, and then simmer for 4 hours or more. Serve with the remaining wine. Magnificent!

• Make Sangria: All you need is wine, brandy, fruit, and a sweetener. Red or white wine will do, as will any brandy and nearly any fruit. Sweeteners include anything from sugar to stevia to honey—fruit juice will even do the job. Sangria—a Spanish and Portuguese wine punch—is named so from the Spanish word for “blood,” sangre, because of its traditionally dark, blood red color. • Make a Spritzer: Rule number one in bartending: water it down, increase the profit margin. Rule number two is: don’t talk about rule number one. But on a lazy afternoon, watering down wine with a carbonated beverage is an economically savvy, all-around wonderful idea. Heck, mix up some Two Buck Chuck and 7-Up and invite the neighbors over for a round of badminton— community organizing at its finest. • Cook with It: Turn cheap cuts of meat into the most tender Beef Burgundy this side of the Atlantic with ease. Quickly brown some salted stew beef in

For 13 years, there’s been a celebration in Camp Verde. Originally, they were celebrating pecans and antiques. Then, when the wine industry began to grow, they started inviting the Arizona wineries to participate. Unfortunately, the festival had begun to wane a bit by this time, and it even disappeared for a year.

over a dozen wineries, including Arizona Stronghold, Alcantara Vineyards, Page Springs Cellars, Caduceus and, new to the scene, Burning Tree Cellars. In addition to the wines, you’ll have a choice of food from the local pecan industry and other local restaurants.

Just in time to save the day… Verde Entertainments took over the event in 2010 and now the festival is enjoying its glory days! A resurgence of energy, excitement and fun has taken over and now it’s a don’t miss event of the year.

Live music, art, antiques, three different contests (pecan nut, pecan pie and White Hills Gallery art) and more! For a $15 entrance fee, receive a commemorative wine glass, entrance into Fort Verde State Park and five wine tasting coupons (additional tastes or glasses of wine may be purchased, too).

Held on Main Street in Camp Verde (an easy find, just off I-17) , this year the event will include
