Hopefully, Oscar is ready for Seth MacFarlane, because MacFarlane sounds ready for him. The “Family Guy” creator and “Ted” director and co-writer will live the dream of many a film fan by serving as host of this year’s Oscars, as ABC airs the Motion Picture Academy’s 85th ceremony Sunday, Feb. 24, from Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. Since being named by first-time Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (“Smash”) as a surprise choice for the job, MacFarlane has become an Oscar nominee as well: He’s up for writing the lyrics to the “Ted” song “Everybody Needs a Best Friend.” “In general, we’re trying to make this a more ubiquitous Oscars,” MacFarlane says. “I think that a lot of times, there’s pressure to keep everything about the movies that are nominated that year. While that is a big part of this, we’re also trying to find ways to broaden it a little bit.” To that end, a salute to the 50th anniversary of the James Bond movie franchise will encompass music superstar Adele’s first live rendering of “Skyfall” - another nominee for best song - and Dame Shirley Bassey will croon the classic “Goldfinger.” Also scheduled is a tribute to movie musicals of recent vintage ... including Oscar’s best picture of 2002, “Chicago,” of which Meron and Zadan were executive producers. And Barbra Streisand will offer her first Oscar performance since her tune “Evergreen” (from “A Star Is Born”) won in 1977. Hollywood, and television viewers, got a taste of how MacFarlane might fare at the Oscars from his often irreverent mid-January teaming with actress Emma Stone to announce the nominations. He maintains that wasn’t meant as a dry run for the main event. “I think that’s how most of the press perceived it, but it really was not that. It was something that the Academy thought would be kind of nice, to make that usually dry ceremony a little more interesting. That was really all it was supposed to be.”

The Birth of Venus is a painting by Sandro Botticelli created around 1485–87. It depicts the goddess Venus (or Aphrodite as she is known
in Greek mythology) emerging from the sea upon a shell in accordance with the myth that explains her birth. The original location of the painting and its commissioner remain uncertain. Some experts attribute its commission to Lorenzo de’ Medici and the Villa of Castello as the site to which the work was originally destined. Today, the painting is held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

‘The Playroom’ Olivia Harris plays one of four siblings in 1970s suburbia who spend the night telling each other stories in the attic while their parents (John Hawkes and Molly Parker) entertain guests downstairs over the course of a gin-soaked evening during which truths are unearthed and betrayals come to light. Playing exclusively at FilmBar. (NR - 83 minutes) Joseph: If “The Playroom” would have been a little less interested in imitating 1997’s “The Ice Storm” and much more motivated by weaving its own unique tale of familial dysfunction set in 1970s suburbia, it may have actually been a provocative motion picture. Instead, the new drama must settle for being mildly intriguing. It is also ultimately unsatisfying as it handles the down and dirty details with melodramatic metaphors. However, some may still find it worth watching if only for the profound performances from stars John Hawkes and Molly Parker, the latter of whom played a similar character on CBS’s short-lived series “Swingtown.” (Grade: D)

Writer/director Carl Franklin presents a look, through Rudolfo Anaya’s award winning novel set in rural New Mexico of the 1940’s, with a poignant beautifully photographed view of a young Mexican boy’s (Luke Ganalon) coming-ofage through the innocence of children as he’s mentored by the older ‘curandera’ Ultima (Miriam Colon) who cures physical and spiritual illnesses. As the story unfolds and sides are clearly defined in the village, our own beliefs rise to the surface for reaffirmation as the young boy discovers his path. (Grade: B)

By Stan Robinson Producer Jason Blum is the guiding force behind the highly successful ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise, his ‘Insidious’ film is a cult classic, ‘Sinister’ is available on DVD on 19 February, and his latest ‘Dark Skies’, opens in wide release on 22 February 2013. Here, Jason shares insight on bringing the latest project to the big screen, and the overall theme of his production company Blumhouse. “You’re exactly right, projects do come to us in one of two ways, I’m lucky enough to say that this project found me! I really admire Scott Stewart’s work, called his agent and asked to meet with him, and he pitched the movie that comes out on February 22nd!
“We pretty much only do low budget movies by keeping the budget down we’re able to maintain total creative control which to me is the fun part about making movies so most of our movies shoot in L.A., they almost all shoot for about 4 or 5 weeks, and we’re doing about 3 to 5 pages of script a day, and I think that schedule forces the filmmakers and the people who are involved with the movie to focus on what’s important which is an emotional relationship between the characters, and that’s pretty much our mantra.
Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton play a couple that witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, causing their safe and peaceful home to quickly unravel. When it becomes clear that the family is being targeted, they take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery. (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

It’s Oscar® time, the biggest time of the year for movies. It’s that time when moviegoers as well as moviemakers, and all those in between, focuses on movies. The 85th Academy Awards show on Sunday 24 February 13, 2013 on ABC-TV, is set for a hopeful all time high for viewership with the hope of surpassing last years numbers of 39.9 million viewers. Along with the awards are the predictions on winners. From the Las Vegas parley odds to those who watch at home with tally sheets in hand, the predictions and projections are part of the ‘buzz’ that make the awards so special. Here are my thoughts on which I think ‘will win’, and whomI think ‘should win’. ‘Best Picture’,the odds on favorite is director/star Ben Affleck’s ‘Argo’, which provides insight into a historical event that was prominent in the news at the time, and has received various awards from both the critics and craft awards alike, and is my choice for the winner. ‘Best Director’ becomes the wild card this year with Ben Affleck not receiving an Oscar® nomination but his film has nominations in seven other categories. I’m thinking Steven Spielberg will win for ‘Lincoln’, which is an extraordinary undertaking on a historical figure in American history. My choice is co-writer/director Behn Zeitlin for ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ and a very moving story of a father preparing his very young daughter for life after his untimely passing. ‘Best Actor’ has Daniel DayLewis as Abraham Lincoln, fresh from a Screen Actors Guild award as the frontrunner
choice is Christoph Waltz as the calculating unsung hero in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’. He also won the Best Supporting Actor in the British Academy Awards (BAFTAs) for the role.
while my personal choice is Denzel Washington for a very moving portrayal of a character with extraordinary talent as a commercial airline pilot that saves the lives of many of his passengers when his plane goes down and comes full circle as he faces the reality of his alcoholism before an FAA investigation. ‘Best Actress’ has Jennifer Lawrence fresh from a Screen Actors Guild win for her work in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ while my choice is Emmanuelle Riva as a senior sliding into dementia in ‘Amour’ which is also a contender in the Best Foreign Language category from Austria. A close 2nd is Naomi Watts with a stunning performance as the mother in ‘The Impossible’ trying to save her family after a tsunami hits a vacation resort. ‘Best Supporting Actor’ has Tommy Lee Jones fresh off a Screen Actors Guild award for his role in ‘Lincoln’ while my

“I didn’t make it to the gym today-that makes five years in a row.” The gym quote is actually rather painful to me because it really does apply. For almost six months running I went to the “Y’ five days a week for 1.5-2 hours of a balanced workout. All of a sudden, and for no particularly good reason, I became a slacker. It’s quite simple to put things off until they no longer enter your mind at all. How about when your hard-earned money is on the line? Shouldn’t you raise the bar on self-expectations when it impacts your pocket book? Of course it should. If you’ve been procrastinating about learning the basics of your favorite video poker game, then there’s no time like the present to download tutorial software (I recommend Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker), grab an instructional book on the topic and learn the key plays for the games you most frequently select. Software: Practicing your game by using VP instructional software is way easier than working out at a Zumba class--this I can tell you from experience. Once you have the program on your desktop it’s just a click of the button and you’re ready to improve your skills. As I’ve often said in the past, there are many programs on the market, but the ones that don’t show the correct holds either before, during or after the hand is over are virtually worthless to you, the player. What good is it to practice playing incorrectly? Classic Games: It’s frustrating to take the time to learn how to play a VP game and then not be able to find it in your favorite casino. Fortunately, the most popular choices in the late seventies (IGT’s Si Redd placed the first VP device on a casino floor in the mid-seventies) and early eighties are still around today. That’s because off-the-wall choices were too hard to play correctly and money quickly went down the porcelain facility. The fastest way for a game to disappear is to have nobody playing--these devices are too expensive for management to allow them to gather dust. Some of the long-term survivors are: Jacks or Better (JOB), Bonus Poker (BP), Double Bonus Poker (DB), Double-Double Bonus Poker (DDB), Full Pay Deuces Wild (FPDW), Not-So-Ugly Deuces Wild (NSUD) and Loose Deuces Wild (LDW). Make sure the software you select has most if not all of these iconic games. Learning Modes: Tutorial software should offer several learning options so you can the select the ones that work best for you. Here are some examples.

MAKING THE TIME Warn: If you make an error a message box will pop up indicating the degree of the statistical mistake (major, moderate or minor). This is the mode I use since I want to see if I can make correct holds without help. Auto Hold: The software automatically holds the correct cards. Visual learners like this technique because seeing the correct plays helps their retention. If you don’t comprehend why it’s correct, then go to the analysis option and you will see the statistical data that makes it accurate. Show: The software will show the correct holds after you play the hand and you will know immediately whether you played correctly. Some people feel rewarded by knowing they played the hand correctly after each game. Test: If you make a mistake the software will show the correct holds and you can either continue or make the change. Analysis: It is important to understand why holds that don’t make sense to you are statistically accurate. That is why good software will have an analysis section that can be accessed any time and will give you the numerical specifics for a game, any hand or a session. Changing Pay Tables: Make sure you can change pay schedules on your software and that it will indicate both the expected return (ER) as well as the variance (risk factor) for any version of a game. Also, you will want to have all classic games, some to be found in any casino offering video poker, along with a “user defined” option for some nontraditional games. Final Thoughts: When I was a high school math teacher one of my student’s least favorite adages was “once begun, half done”. It didn’t keep me from over-using the expression, though, because it’s too easy to procrastinate and later berate yourself for doing so. The best time for becoming a smart player is right now, so what are you waiting for? BEER MYTHS Hope you are all enjoying Arizona Beer Week. To help celebrate we thought we would look at several popular beer myths and help debunk them.We compiled several of these from across the world for your enjoyment and education.
MYTH #1: Draft beer is better than bottled beer FACT: It depends on the bar With properly maintained draft lines, beer from the tap is the freshest you can get. But not all bars keep their lined maintained, which can leave your pint polluted with unwelcome microbes. “A draft system is not a sterile situation,” says Dave Glor, Germantrained brewer and field-quality
analyst for New Belgium. Bacteria like pediococcus and lactobacillus produce diacetyl, which makes it taste like somebody shot movie-theater popcorn butter into your beer. And you know that vinegar-like aroma you sometimes smell in dive bars? “That’s acetobacter,” says Glor. “You smell it because it grows on dirty bar mats, but it can grow in dirty tap faucets, too.” And when it does, it spills into your cup and makes your beer taste too acidic.
The lesson here: If you don’t trust the bar—or if you have reason to suspect that it doesn’t maintain its draft lines— order a bottle or can. That will keep you from drinking an orgy of beerloving bacteria.
MYTH #2: Beer causes a beer belly FACT: Moderate beer consumption poses no serious threat to your belly It seems that whoever coined the phrase “beer belly” had a vendetta against beer. “Excess calories from beer are no more likely to contribute to weight gain than excess calories from anything else,” says Christian Finn, MS, CSCS. In a 2011 review of 31 studies, researchers concluded that only binge drinking was associated with weight gain. Moderate alcohol use appeared benign, and some studies even found that moderate drinkers were thinner on average, regardless of preferred beverage. Still worried about beer’s carbohydrates? Fine, but worry with perspective: A typical 12-ounce beer has a carb load similar to a glass of

wine—roughly 10-to-20 grams—and according to a 2009 study, it also contains roughly 2.5 grams of barleyderived fiber. That puts beer on par with a slice of whole-wheat bread. In the world of vices, that’s pretty tame.
MYTH #3: Dark beer is heavy FACT: Not Necessarily Actually, couldn’t be further from the truth. Color in beer comes purely from the grain used in its creation, with darker beers containing more toasted or roasted barley malt and paler beers containing less or no darker malts. And roasting malt doesn’t make it heavier or more caloric.

and nuances of a truly fine zinfandel or sauvignon blanc are easy to see, but how can a drink made from a single ingredient, grapes, be necessarily more complex in flavor than one made from water, yeast, malt and hops and an almost limitless diversity of other ingredients? Ever find coriander or cumin notes in a wine? No? Well, you can in a beer.
MYTH #5: Beer and fine dining don’t mix FACT: Maybe we should have saved “Au Contraire” for this one With its wealth of flavors and finely nuanced characters, the world of beer has a style to pair with any food, from the commonplace to the extravagant. (See Myth #4 for more on this.) The reason we tend to place wine at the table rather than beer is because that’s

what the French do, and the western world learned much of what it knows about fine dining from the French.
MYTH #6: Beer is full of preservatives and other junk FACT: You should check some of your other food labels Some know-it-alls will tell you that beer is loaded with additives and preservatives. The truth is that beer is as all-natural as orange juice or milk (maybe even more so - some of those milk & OJ labels will surprise you). Beer doesn’t need preservatives because it has alcohol and hops, both of which are natural preservatives. Beer is only “processed” in the sense that bread is: It is cooked and fermented, then filtered and packaged. The same can be said for Heineken.
beer offers serious low-calorie options. Twelve ounces of a typical stout has the same number of calories as 12 ounces of skim milk: about 125. That’s less than orange juice (150 calories), which is about the same as your standard, “full-calorie” beer. If beer were your only source of nutrition, you’d have to drink one every waking hour just to reach your recommended daily allowance of calories (2,000 to 2,500). And nobody’s recommending you drink that many. The only natural drinks with fewer calories than beer are plain tea, black coffee and water. Surely, beer is loaded with those fattening carbohydrates, right? Wrong again. The average beer has about 12 grams of carbs per 12-ounce serving. The
U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance is 300 grams of carbohydrates in a standard 2,000-calorie diet. In other words, you would need to drink an entire 24-pack case of beer - and then reach into a second case - simply to reach the government’s recommended daily allotment of carbohydrates. You’re better off munching an apple or drinking some soda pop if you want to carbo-load. Each has about 35 to 40 grams of carbs - three times the number found in a beer. Many people unfairly associate low alcohol with low flavor. There are plenty of poor quality beers that are high in alcohol content, and the opposite is also true. Some of the famous Belgian and German beers have traditionally high average alcohol content – perhaps 8% or 10%. However, the alcohol content is only one feature and doesn’t necessarily account for the good taste. In England, many of the best mild ales have alcohol content of 4% or less – resulting from a higher tax on stronger beer. Of course, the advantage is finding good-tasting, lower alcohol beers is that you can drink more of it! American brewers are experimenting more and more with low alcohol full flavored beer in order to create a more sessionable product.
MYTH #9: Bottles are better than cans when it comes to storing beer. FACT: Cans are actually superior storage containers It is easy to see where this one comes from. Just look around: cheap beer comes in cans; expensive beer comes in bottles. But wait a minute. Sunlight affects beer. Left too long in light, beer can become “skunked.” Skunked beer is the result of a molecule in hops — isohumulones — that breaks down in light, and the broken-down version of isohumulones resembles the stink molecule release by skunks. Glass bottles let in light; cans do not. Brown bottles do a pretty good job of keeping the light wavelength that skunks beer out, but that only delays the skunking process. Can let in no light, so the beer cannot skunk. As for a fear that cans might impart a metallic flavor — also NOT TRUE for most modern cans. There is a coating that keeps the beer from touching the inner aluminum. You can test this by having someone pour the same beer from both a bottle and a can and taking a blind taste test. There you have it, nine beer myths from all over the web debunked, hopefully for good. Now get back to Beer Week. Oh, yeah, one more freebie, Ben Franklin never said “Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” You can look that one up yourself.
