UNIQUE VALENTINE’S DAY FUN AT SANCTUARY

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA

Tuesday, February 11th at Celebrity Theatre Zappa Plays Zappa is an epic musical trek across the U.S., Canada and Europe celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic Frank Zappa album Roxy & Elsewhere, which includes a stop at the historic Celebrity Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11. Zappa Plays Zappa, the Grammy(R) winning group that has made and recreated history performing the music of Frank Zappa, honors the 40th anniversary of the pivotal Zappa fan favorite Roxy & Elsewhere with the entirety of its repertoire -- including the provocative rhythms of “Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing?,” “Echidna’s Arf (Of You)” and Be -Bop Tango (of the Old Jazzmen’s Church)” -- performed live. Frank Vincent Zappa was a musical prodigy and iconoclast whose prolific career ended too soon. Over the course of his 30year career, the self-taught musician and composer wrote and performed rock, jazz, blues and orchestral music. Since Zappa’s death in 1993, his family has kept the torch of his genius burning, led by his eldest son and virtuoso guitarist Dweezil. “I think my father’s music deserves the chance to be discovered by a contemporary audience. His creativity and discipline is inspirational. Since generation X has apparently evolved beyond generation Y, perhaps we’ve reached generation Z. I think this is an appropriate time and place to inherit and adopt Frank Zappa as the musical figure head for Generation Z. Many facets of his music are bold and unconventional and it feels to me like it’s from the future. Generation Z should be bold and unconventional.” Tickets ($41, $58, $82) are on sale now at www.celebritytheatre.com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is located at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

Wine & Craft Beer Festival Serves Up Arizona’s Best

Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:30pm (The Wasp Woman) Thursday, Mar. 27 at 7:30pm (The Inspector General) Fans of the cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Woody Allen’s What’s Up, Tiger Lily? will love National Comedy Theatre’s Spoof ‘n Cinema. Known for its competitive improv shows, this hilarious comedy troupe pokes fun at dated, campy vintage films by replacing the soundtrack with off-the-wall live riffs. From cheesy sci-fi effects to melodramatic acting, no filmmaking sin can escape this show’s comic justice. As these so-bad-they’re-good movies play, the comedians overdub their own dialogue, twisting the characters and dreaming up absurd plots to fit the action on the screen, all while providing their own foley sound effects and scores. At the end of the night there will also be prizes and trivia.

Be a VIP at the Wine, Food, Music & Craft Beer Festival, featuring more than 20 local wineries and craft breweries, two stages with live entertainment, gourmet food samples and local artisans showing off their wares. Stroll through the streets of the Rawhide Western Town at Wild Horse Pass and discover beers from local favorites like Old World Brewery and Phoenix Ale Brewery, plus popular international beers like Stella Artois and Hoegaarden. You might be surprised to find that Arizona puts out some world-class wines. You can taste a selection from the state’s best wineries. Don’t forget to grab a bite to eat from the gourmet food trucks or one of Rawhide’s restaurants. Your ticket gets you five wine tastings, ten beer tastings, a souvenir tasting glass and a goodie bag.

Ed Sullivan Show exactly a half century ago. Theater Works at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts celebrates the golden anniversary with a nationally touring musical retelling of the Beatles story on April 17 at 7:30 pm. An astounding 73 million Americans tuned in to watch the lads from Liverpool that Sunday evening. Before you could say “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!” Beatlemania had swept the country. One week later, News In Brief put it this way: “There are rumors abound that the [Beatles] are Britain’s revenge for the Boston Tea Party.”

TAO: PHOENIX RISING / JAPANESE TAIKO DRUMMERS ROCK THE STAGE IN NEW SHOW

Thursday, February 20, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, 8 p.m. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

Sommers, Star Ledger

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble TAO performing its stunning new production, Phoenix Rising, on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 20–21. Living and training in the rugged mountains of Japan, the passionate, young drummers of TAO offer a modern take on the ancient art of taiko. TAO’s performers each bring nontraditional flair to the group by drawing on their diverse backgrounds, which range from hard-rock music to gymnastics and composing.

This seismic, coast-to-coast outpouring of ectasy in 1964 was the perfect release for the country mourning a Presidential assassination which shook the country to its core. This wasn’t the first time American teenagers were whipped into a collective frenzy over pop stars. Frank Sinatra inspired this response decades earlier, and the hip-shaking antics of Elvis Presley created pandemonium on the same Sunday-night program eight years earlier. But never in American history had so many young people screamed so hard at exactly the same moment, a reaction made possible by television. Nielsen measured the exuberant foursome’s maiden performance as the most-watched program in U.S. history, reaching a full 45% of the population. By early April, 1965, the Beatles would occupy the top five places in the Billboard charts – a feat never achieved before or since. Tickets are $30/$40 plus $3.50 facility fees and may be purchased online at www. theaterworks.org or by phoning 623-8157930.

In TAO’s Phoenix Rising, athletic bodies and contemporary costumes meet explosive taiko drumming and innovative choreography in a show of phenomenal precision, energy and stamina. With 500 performances each year, TAO has been seen by more than 5 million spectators in 17 countries and 400 cities. Adored in Japan and across the world, they present an unprecedented and timeless taiko performance, bringing a brand new genre to the stage. Tickets are available for $39, $49 and $69 online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts. org or through (480) 499-TKTS (8587).

The result promises to be a festive and enjoyable evening with celebrity style and a dash of fundraising aimed at scholarships for talented SCC music students. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. The three signature events are the George Benson Honorary Scholarship presented by the legendary jazz guitarist and singer, musical performances from Music Department students and faculty, and a silent auction with proceeds going to scholarships for SCC students. This year’s visit by Mr. Benson marks the third year he’s been on campus to present the scholarship named in his honor. This year’s recipient is SCC student Noah Simpson, who plays the trumpet. He was chosen by a faculty committee and will receive a $1,500 scholarship to be used during his last semester at SCC. Simpson also will be one of the student performers during the showcase. “The performances from students and faculty promise to be diverse,” said Eric Rasmussen, the school’s director of instrumental music. “It will show off the entire Music Department,” he said. “We will have jazz, vocals, DJs, rappers, and instrumentalists.” Prior to the performances, a silent auction of donated items will be staged in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, downtown alt-theatre Space 55 serves up an antidote to the saccharine sweetness of candy, kisses, and bad chocolate. Opening on February 14 is the Arizona premiere of the off-Broadway hit, The Norwegians, a black comedy about how not to get over that special person, written by C. Denby Swanson.

groundbreaking and provocative special exhibition created by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, that illustrates the important roles women have played in rock and roll, from its inception through today. This special exhibition of iconic costumes, instruments and artifacts spotlights more than 70 artists.

It’s about hit-men, but they’re really, really nice ones. Gus and Tor. They’re Norwegians, from Minnesota. It’s also about Olive and Betty, two women who haven’t got over their bad break-ups. And whose decision-making process is still being negatively affected by said break-ups.

Space 55, located on Pierce near the Roosevelt Row area, has been coming into its own with a season of strong productions and a healthy roster of rotating late-night shows focusing on storytelling and comedy. The Norwegians premiered last year Off - Broadway in New York to warm reviews. “Who knows whether Ms. Swanson is an original theatrical voice? There is every chance that she wrote ‘The Norwegians’ after falling asleep during a late-night rerun of ‘Fargo.’ But this profane, playfully dark comedy is often hysterical.” Anita Gates, The New York Times The Norwegians, by C. Denby Swanson will be performed Fridays and Saturdays from February 14 to March 1, with one Thursday performance on February 20. All performances are at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 at www.space55.org

The original “Final Fantasy,” created back in 1987 by the Tokyo-based developer Square, had such a cult following that the game would be rereleased on 11 other platforms and inspire feature films, action figures and music. Over the next 26 years, the series would not only evolve technologically, but its stories, characters and locales would grow in depth and complexity as well, creating an even larger legion of fans. Now, following the strength and success of 2010’s “Final Fantasy XIII” and its sequel “Final Fantasy XIII-2,” Square Enix is ready to finish the story of its main character, Lightning, with the trilogy-ending title “Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.” Only 13 days remain before the end of the world, and Lightning has been tasked with rescuing the souls of humanity for rebirth in the new world by the god Bhunivelze. Despite her new role as savior, Lightning finds herself in a world of change, as her once-strong allies have scattered across the four continents of Nova Chrysalia, each possessing a new life and new burdens. With the end of existence looming, our hero must race against time to save humanity and find her true destiny while ultimately deciding which souls to save and which to leave behind.

‘Run & Jump’

‘Gloria’

‘7 Boxes’

Paulina García plays a free-spirited older woman who faces the realities of her whirlwind relationship with a former naval officer whom she meets out in the clubs. (R - 100 minutes)

A young delivery boy with his eye on a fancy cell phone, is offered a chance to deliver seven boxes with unknown contents in exchange for a quick $100, but finds he’s caught up in a crime he knows nothing about. (100 minutes)

Stan: Presented in what I call a ‘slice of life’ format where we the viewer come into a story for a time and just as suddenly exit, this story, under the sure hand of director Sebastián Lelio, is a reminder of the classic American film ‘Looking for Mr. Goodbar’ (1977) and the forlorn feeling we had for the central character that it can only end badly for her. And so it is for this character named ‘Gloria’ as we feel her pain and hear the Spanish language version of the familiar Laura Branigan tune as the end titles roll, is ‘must see’ viewing.

‘Someone Marry Barry’ Listen to Joseph J. Airdo on “Breakthrough Entertainment” - 10 a.m. Saturdays on KPHX 1480 AM and 4 p.m. Thursdays on BreakRadioShow.com

Damon Wayans Jr., Hayes MacArthur and Thomas Middleditch play childhood friends who scheme to find a wife for their socially inappropriate pal (Tyler Labine). Their plan completely backfires when his new girlfriend Melanie (Lucy Punch) turns out to be just like him. (NR - 86 minutes)

Stan: Directors and screenplay writers Juan Carlos Maneglia & Tana Schembori bring us a story, taking place in a Paraguay market as the main setting, (think an American style flea market with multiplerows of merchandise from household items, food to furniture), grabs hold and doesn’t let go ‘til the final scene. We the viewer, as well as the 17 year old boy, are made aware in almost real time just how serious the ‘items in the boxes’ are wanted, definitely delivering an ‘edge of your seat’ action/thriller.

Will Forte plays an American doctor who travels to Ireland to study a family after its patriarch (Edward MacLiam) suffers a stroke which changes his personality, leaving his wife (Maxine Peake) to run the show. (NR - 105 minutes) Joseph: If acting were all that mattered, “Run & Jump” would undoubtedly make the grade as star Will Forte and his co-stars give very emotional performances here. However, writer/director Steph Green’s new Irish import is entirely too cluttered, trying to be a million things at once without ever stopping long enough to do any of them particularly well. More than anything, this jumbled technique only poses a challenge to viewers’ attention.

Joseph: “Someone Marry Barry” is an extremely entertaining romantic comedy that even carries a nice message about how there really is somebody for everybody. It definitely delivers on its promise of fun and, much like the exasperatingly immature people in your life with whom you remain friends for no logical reason whatsoever, you cannot help but like these characters and want to see them succeed with one another in the equally illogical thing called love.

COME FOR THE CHINESE. STAY FOR THE CHICKEN WING. By Santino DeFranco Follow me on Twitter @Tinodefranco If you’re in need of a Chinese food fix, go to Wong’s Place in Tempe, just east of McClintock Dr. on Baseline Rd. You’ll be greeted by a skinny man with gossamer hair, thick Coke-bottle glasses and, of course, a Chinese accent—just what you want to hear when entering a Chinese restaurant. He’s a friendly fellow that may not remember your name, but he will certainly remember your order. The building is old and the inside may be older, but don’t let that lead you down the poor-decision-path of eating somewhere else. The standard fare speckles the menu that one would expect to see at a Chinese restaurant: orange chicken, kung pao chicken and shrimp, beef and broccoli and the rest, which are all fantastic choices. However, my personal fave at Wong’s Place has to be the Chicken and Snow Pea lunch combo. It’s the perfect size meal served with fried or white rice and a fried chicken wing—yes, a fried chicken wing—which I will gladly discuss in further detail later. The chicken is clean, all white meat deliciousness that will

I ordered different combos on numerous occasions at Wong’s and always set aside the fried delight that I always took as more of a garnish than serious edible. I mean, what the heck is a chicken wing doing on my Chinese lunch combo? Eventually, I brought in a group of friends with me to Wong’s place and, out of pure courage, or insanity, one of them dove right into a wing. His face lit up like a police spotlight and he explained to each of us that it was the greatest chicken wing he’d ever eaten. One-by-one we tried the wing, and for once in his life, he was right—as right as a dog chasing a car. There isn’t barbeque sauce on this wing or any other rub. It’s just a perfectly cooked, deep-fried piece of chicken that is always crispy and the most exceptional accompaniment to your meal. I say come for the Chinese, but stay (and return) for the chicken wing. If you’d like to scrutinize Wong’s full menu, please do so at www. wongsplacetempe.com. Or go there in person at 1825 E. Baseline Rd., Tempe, AZ 85283. And, as always, let me know where you’re eating on Twitter @ Tinodefranco.

win over even the biggest skeptic of the origins of Chinese food meats. The fried rice is excellent, but every once in a while there are larger chunks of egg in the rice—not my personal favorite, but if you like the egg in the rice you’re in for a treat, but may also need to see a counselor. The real treat, though, is the random fried chicken wing that accompanies the lunch combo.

Move over, cork, and make way for screw caps. Today, screw caps are replacing corks on more than just inexpensive bottles. Currently, screw caps seal 75 percent of Australian wines and 93 percent of New Zealand wines, and they’re gaining popularity in all countries, including here in the U.S.

TO AGE OR NOT TO AGE?

It is a common misconception that all wines improve with age. In fact, more than 90 percent of all wines should be consumed within one year. The three major collectibles that should age more than 10 years are: a great Châteaux of Bordeaux, the best producers of California Cabernet Sauvignon, and the finest producers of vintage port.

California has more Chardonnay grapes than anyplace in the world. It has been the most successful white grape in the state, yielding a wine of tremendous character and magnificent flavor. It is also the top selling varietal in the United States.

DRIVING UPSIDE DOWN The idea of a car driving upside down might seem preposterous, the kind of stunt seen in dumb action movies. However, science has assured us that it is indeed possible for a car to drive on the ceiling. Race cars, specifically those used for Formula One racing, are designed with inverted wings. They work in the opposite fashion to aircraft wings—instead of generating lift, they generate downforce, which pushes the car down against the ground. While this might seem counterproductive in relation to

achieving high speeds, the downforce has a practical use: It allows F1 cars to take corners at a velocity that would otherwise send them flying off the road. All an F1 car would need to do to drive upside down is to generate a downforce equal to or greater than its own weight. But while the science is sound, there are some pretty big complications. Driving upside down would be extremely disorienting to the man behind the wheel. Moreover, the car’s engine and components are not currently designed to operate upside down.

MOST EXPENSIVE PRODUCTION CAR When we think of expensive cars, names like Bentley and Rolls Royce come to mind. But you could buy more than 20 Bentleys for the price of the world’s most expensive automobile. The Lamborghini Veneno (Italian for “venom”) is a limited edition supercar that boasts staggering power—its 740 horsepower engine can produce a top speed of 355 kph (220.5 mph). According to the manufacturer, this lowslung beast can accelerate to 100 kph (62 mph) in 2.9 seconds.

But as we mentioned earlier, the privilege of owning the Veneno comes with a shocking price tag—the roadster goes for an astonishing $4.5 million. Of course, the Veneno is more about making a splash than making a profit. Lamborghini is only producing nine of the cars, which are sure to be squabbled over by all manner of oil-rich sheiks and tycoons of industry, the only kind of folks with pockets deep enough to afford them.

A theoretical Gravity Train exists which, in only 42 minutes, could connect two places located anywhere by digging a hole through the earth.

GAME! COVER STORY

FANS RULE IN 2014 HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS GIVE FANS THE POWER TO DECIDE WHICH RULES WILL IMPACT GAMES IN GLENDALE AND PHOENIX

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will take fan interaction to a new level when the 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour comes to Jobing. com Arena in Glendale on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and to US Airways Center in Phoenix on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. Fans can choose which new game-changing rules they want to see in their hometown by voting online now at harlemglobetrotters.com/rule. The Globetrotters were the first organization in sports and

entertainment to let fans vote on rules when the team introduced the concept last year. Since the fan response was so overwhelming, the team is doing it again – but with a major twist. The 2014 online ballot includes three never-before-seen revolutionary rules: Hot Hand Jersey – Both teams will have a “Hot Hand Jersey” they can pass among each other. The player who is wearing this jersey will receive double points on made baskets. Make or Miss – The quarter begins with only two players on the court for each team. When a team scores, a teammate may enter the game. When

they miss, the player missing the shot must leave the court, leaving his or her teammates shorthanded. Trick Shot Challenge – Via three challenge flags per team, each coach can challenge the other team to make a trick shot. If the team makes the trick shot, they earn five points. If they miss, the other team receives five points.

With a roster showcasing stars such as Hi-Lite Bruton, Dizzy Grant and Sweet J Ekworomadu, the Globetrotters’ oneof-a-kind family show features mesmerizing ball handling, an assortment of trick shots and high-flying dunks – all with an array of comedy guaranteed

to entertain the whole family. After virtually every game, Globetrotter stars remain on the court for autographs and photographs with fans. Tickets start at $18.00 and are now available at harlemglobetrotters.com, www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 800-745-3000. For the Glendale game, tickets can also be purchased at the Jobbing Arena box office. For the Phoenix game, tickets can be purchased at the U.S. Airways Center box office. Information on group and scout tickets for either game can be found at harlemglobetrotters.com.

PLAYER PROFILES: A CLOSER LOOK #2 DIZZY GRANT

#26 HI-LITE BRUTON

former Globetrotters coach) recommended he give the Globetrotters a shot, and he signed a contract with the team in 2001. He feels blessed to be able to share his athletic gift and spread joy around the world.

#17 SWEET J EKWOROMADU

The sharp-shooting Dizzy Grant started playing basketball after he attended a Harlem Globetrotters game at the age of seven. Little did he know that he would eventually be playing for the world’s most famous basketball team.

Hi-Lite Bruton (BROO-tun) is a crowd favorite due to his hilarious personality and highflying slam dunks, but you might be surprised to know that he didn’t dunk for the first time until he was a senior in high school.

When the Harlem Globetrotters broke training camp this past September, many of the stars players headed straight to Bangor, Maine to debut their 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour. But while the team was making its first stop on the tour, one Globetrotter was on her way to showcase her talents elsewhere.

Dizzy holds the distinction of sinking the first 4-point shot in basketball history, when the Globetrotters unveiled their game-changing innovation during a nationally-televised ESPN2 special on Dec. 5, 2010. The basketball and 4-point circle Dizzy utilized on the 35-foot shot is now preserved for future generations at the mecca of the sport, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. He is also a superb ball handler and one of the Globetrotters’ biggest cut-ups. “He is funny all the time,” says Big Easy Lofton. “He can do impressions of anybody,” adds Flight Time Lang. Dizzy has developed a cult following on the Internet with his spot-on impersonations of other basketball superstars and funny characters of his own that he has created.

Just as amazing, Hi-Lite did not play organized basketball before enrolling at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., where he impressed the men’s head basketball coach during a pickup game and was offered a spot on the team. Hi-Lite’s basketball career skyrocketed, as he went on to earn NAIA First Team All-America honors and win the 1994 College Slam Dunk Contest as a college senior.

His Globetrotter travels have taken Hi-Lite to dozens of countries, and he has played in some very unique settings, from games on aircrafts carriers when the team has visited U.S. military personnel, to being part of the first professional basketball game ever played on ice in New York City’s Central Park in 2010. He has also been a guest on the popular “Wendy Williams Show” and got to share the stage at the famous Grand Ole Opry with legendary country music stars like Charlie Daniels.

Another cool thing Dizzy has done with the Globetrotters is appeared on numerous TV shows, such as Disney XD’s “Kickin’ It,” “The Celebrity Apprentice,” “TODAY,” “Good Morning America,” “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,” “The Chew,” and “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” The New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year his senior season in college, Dizzy was also a first team all-conference selection in both his senior and junior seasons. He wants to reach youngsters the way his father reached him. “He taught me what hard work is and how it can pay off,” says Dizzy. “I just hope I am doing the same for others out there in the world.”

Hi-Lite cites his grandmother as his hero, as she alone raised him and 12 other kids. His grandmother would take the kids fishing every summer in South Carolina, and fishing is a hobby that Hi-Lite enjoys to this day.

Sweet J Ekworomadu (eck-wor-oh-MAAdoo), who is among the Globetrotters’ 2014 class of rookies, was on a plane to Maputo, Mozambique, Africa, where she competed with the Nigerian national team in the 23rd Afrobasket for Women tournament. Sweet J has been a member of the Nigerian national team since 2007. The parents of the Dallas native are from Nigeria but moved to the U.S. before she was born. While Sweet J is proud to be part of the Nigerian national team, she is also honored to wear the Globetrotter uniform because it means she is a part of history. Only a select few females get the opportunity to play for the team, and she feels blessed to be on that elite list. Sweet J is proud to be part of an organization that provides family entertainment and a positive influence to youths, such as when she and her female teammates – TNT Maddox and T-Time Brawner – became registered as Adult Girl Scouts. Sweet J is unique in many ways, and now being a female player on the Harlem Globetrotters can be added to that list. She hopes it will show young girls that anything is possible with faith, hard work and dedication.

HIDDEN GEM

Kia and its sister company Hyundai are trying to go toe-to-toe with Japanese automakers Toyota, Nissan and Honda, and in recent years, have been gaining traction. Having a luxury sedan was critical in propelling Kia up the ladder, and the Korean automaker nailed it with the new Cadenza. This luxury sedan is outstanding, offering exceptional luxury at a great price. It’s the complete luxury package of sleek style, refined detail, and enough hightech goodies to keep even the most discerning car owner content.

Under the Hood: The Cadenza is powered by a smooth 293-horsepower, 3.3-liter V-6, hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s got enough muscle to pass on the freeway, and accelerate from 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds. Fuel economy is about what’s expected from a luxury car with a V6 engine: 19 miles per gallon in the city, 28 mpg on the highway. The Cadenza’s ride is tight, refined and quiet, with enough insulation to filter out most road and wind noise.

The Cadenza is offered in two trim levels: Premium and Limited. We test drove the Premium with the Technology and Luxury packages. Standard equipment in the Cadenza includes navigation system, smart-key entry, a rear camera system and a 550watt Infinity sound system. The Luxury Package adds a panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather upgrade, ventilated driver’s seat and heated steering wheel. The Technology Package adds smart cruise control, blind spot detection, and a lane-departure warning system. To create a stress-free purchase, Kia threw in free scheduled maintenance for the first three years (or 37,500 miles), on top of its already impressive 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Inside the Cabin: The Cadenza’s spacious interior is tastefully appointed: plush leather, wood trim and well-textured plastic surfaces. The driver gets a comfortable 10-way power adjustable seat, while rear seats are spacious with plenty of legroom. The dashboard is clean and modern with a digital speedometer and tachometer. The controls are intuitive and easy to navigate, a combination of an eight-inch touch-screen for the infotainment system and two tidy rows of buttons — one for the climate controls and one for the stereo.

If labels don’t matter to you, the 2014 Kia Cadenza is a great choice if you’re in the market for a luxury sedan

At 30, Kelly Clark is the graybeard of the U.S. women’s snowboarding team competing this week in Sochi, Russia, in the XXII Winter Olympics. She certainly has the trophy case befitting someone who has been competing for half her life, including eight Winter X Games medals (four gold), four Winter Dew Tour medals (one gold) and two Olympic medals (one gold). The product of West Dover, Vt., is in a happy place these days, coming off what she call the best three seasons of her life so far, including a streak of 16 consecutive wins, and just feeling comfortable in her own skin – a welcome byproduct of age. She won her Olympic gold medal in the halfpipe back in 2002 at Salt Lake City, when she beat out more experienced riders in France’s Doriane Vidal, Swiss Fabienne Reuteler and Team USA mate Tricia Byrnes. Twelve years later, she remembers the events of that sunny midFebruary day as being pretty overwhelming for an 18-year-old, but it put her officially on the map in the snowboard community and set her up for the career that followed.

No accident: Curry has Warriors headed for playoffs

The play was called a “backboard alleyoop,” and it was the on-the-fly creation of one Stephen Curry, the stellar point guard of the Golden State Warriors. In a Jan. 5 game against the Washington Wizards, a driving Curry, his path to the basket blocked, shoveled an underhand lob off the backboard and into the waiting right hand of teammate Andrew Bogut, who slammed it home to finish off a highlight-reel play that drew “oohs” and “aahs” from the hostile capital city crowd. The only problem: It was probably an accident. It certainly was a surprise to Bogut, who admitted after the game, “I didn’t know what was going on.” His look of disbelief at his hand immediately after the play certainly didn’t betray that. As for Curry, all he would say was, “We’ve never done that before, so it was nice that it worked out.” Things have worked out well so far this season for Curry and the Warriors, who recorded their ninth straight win with that victory in D.C. At this writing, the Warriors were in second place in the Pacific Division, just behind the Los Angeles Clippers, and fifth in the Western Conference.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIES You could also consider a very complimentary pairing, something with a little bit of sweetness to pair up with the peanut butter. Kind of a little chocolate and beer sort of thing. Since we do not get the consummate chocolate peanut butter beer in Arizona… that would be Du Claw’s Sweet Baby Jesus, the next best option would be a nice chocolaty beer…how about Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti? Nice chocolate flavor with just a hint of chili pepper on the finish gets the job done. Straight chocolate works well too, try Sonoran White Chocolate with this cookie. Continued On Page 54...

We talk all the time in this column about beer and food pairing, but this week let’s do something unique. Beer truly works incredibly well with sweets and other desserts, but this could be the ultimate test. I am certain you all have been hit up by the co-worker with the young daughter in Girl Scouts to buy some cookies. Since it once again release time for Girl Scout Cookies, let’s take a look at some pairing suggestions.

This beer is like a fine port. It is very high gravity, weighing in at 11.8% ABV and very well hopped, albeit English hops. The English hops leave a subtle hop quality that blends very nicely with the butter in the cookie. Alternatives might be another barleywine like Bridgeport Old Knucklehead. You could also try a brown ale, maybe Big Sky Moose Drool as a nice complement.

We will start with Trefoils. Trefoils are the most traditional of all Girl Scout cookies. They are a shortbread cookie, which means they are very heavy on butter, but otherwise kind of light. These cookies cry out for something with a little bit of body, but not too much richness, lest you step on the butter. My thought here is a nice barleywine. How about the richness of an Old Stock from North Coast?

Do-Si-Dos…the peanut butter sandwich cookie. I’m thinking that hops will go well with the peanut goodness of this cookie. Great bitterness and a nice carbonation level will work wonders with this cookie. Since it is the season, how about some Bell’s Hopslam? Six different hops with a touch of honey makes this a killer combination.

...Continued from page 52 Savannah Smiles are the most recent lemon flavored cookie from the Girl Scouts. This is a tangy, tart, shortbread cookie, so we want to look at a few flavors here. My first choice is a nice German style Hefeweizen… I am thinking Schneider EdelWeisse. The banana and clove in this beer is frequently complemented by a lemon,

so why not make it a lemon flavored cookie? I would also look at something done in the Berliner Weisse style. Bell’s Oarsman, or New Belgium’s latest offering, Snapshot, fits the bill. Both provide a hint of tartness at the end which would match up perfectly with the lemon flavor in the cookie. Tagalongs are another peanut butter cookie, but this time in patty form,

enrobed in rich chocolate. Certainly the aforementioned Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti would work wonders with this cookie, but let’s reach a little further. Step into this one with Left Hand Milk Stout. Go with either the nitro version or the original to create a nice chocolate complement to this richly flavored cookie. Want a little counterpoint? Try a tart beer like a Flemish Red with this cookie. I am thinking that Petrus Aged Red is perfect, but you could not go wrong with either Duchesse de Bourgogne of Monk’s Café Flemish Red. The nice lactic tartness will balance out the chocolate and allow the overall flavor of the cookie to shine. If you really want to reach, look at a hoppy Belgian Ale. Something like Piraat to hit this mark. We are coming down to the last couple. Next up is Samoas. This is an incredible pairing of caramel and toasted coconut, and chocolate with just a little bit of cookie. Samoas sound

like a stand-alone cookie, but we have just the right beer here in Arizona for this one. Papago Coconut Joe hits the spot. Starting off with a base beer that is a milk stout infused with Irish Cream flavored coffee bean and then adding in coconut is almost unfair to this cookie. The caramel will keep the cookie in the forefront, but the beer will play off of the rest of the flavors so nicely, you may not realize if you are eating or drinking. An alternative would be Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. The natural vanilla beans in the blend would go a long way to complementing the caramel in the cookie and the roast would handle the other flavors. Coconut Joe and Vanilla Porter are definitely the on-two punch here. Last and not least are the classic… Thin Mints. Thin Mints are almost too easy. You need something with a rich, roasted malt flavor…maybe some chocolate sweetness…and a lot of alcohol. You got it…I am describing Continued On Page 56...

ADVENTURES IN BREW & CROWD FUNDINING Hello again craft beer lovers, it’s been two months since I have written to you here in the pages of AZ Weekly Magazine and it feels great to be back! Today I’d like to bend your ear about my beer T.V. project ADVENTURES IN BREW and our crowd funding campaign with Crowdbrewed.com. I have received quite a few emails asking why a big company like our producers Black Dog Productions needs funding to help the show along and I wanted to explain our motives. In a nutshell, what Black Dog is looking for is the level of excitement the show is generating and whether or not the beer community at large is reacting positively to it. In all fairness, the company has put quite a bit of scratch in to the time, filming, editing and production of the show and wants to see if the population is behind it. Is the show good for craft beer? Am I the right man for the job? Is there a future in this whole ball o’ wax? Should we continue? Is going out of state to bring all the fun back to AZ what the people want to see? So many questions. I will tell you this, shooting the segments this last year has been a blast. Interviewing great beer people like Jeff Prior of Firestone Walker, filming at New Belgium’s’ Tour De Fat or Phoenix Ale’s Brewers Invitational and of course games like the rolling keg races has made for a memorable year!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com

Anyway, it would be an honor if you’d like to see more of Adventures in Brew hit our crowdbrewed.com site and show some love! Not all great ideas wind up being great, but I am hoping this one is. Are you behind me? Until next week, Cheers!

Liquid Sol Music Festival is an allages event featuring three stages of live music performances by local and national artists including award-winning band, The All-American Rejects. The fest will also have over 25 vendors, an extensive craft beer garden, live charity auction, fundraising activities, vehicle extrication demo, kids corner and much more. Alternative rock band, The AllAmerican Rejects, consist of lead singer and bassist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist Nick Wheeler, guitarist Mike Kennerty and drummer Chris Gaylor. Before joining forces with Kennerty and Gaylor in 2005, Ritter and Wheeler would work drum loops and pre-programmed rhythm tracks during their early performances. These arrangements were reprised on their self-titled album that caught the attention of the mainstream market. Their second studio album “Move Along,” was released in 2005 was the official debut of Kennerty and Gaylor, which became certified double platinum and produced three chart topping singles on the Billboard
