ARIZONA BEER WEEK 2014 Beer Week Baby!!! It is the one week a year when we get to indulge in as many different events, and meet as many different beer people as we possibly can. Take vacation, call in sick, order up a limo for the week, but do whatever you have to do to make sure that you are ready to make the most out of Arizona Beer Week. This is the fourth year for the event and each year it gets better and better. Since this is going to be a long article, let us dispense with the usual banalities and get right into some of the highlights. Beer Week officially starts on February 16th with the Strong Beer Festival. While the whole week is presented by the Arizona Brewers Guild, this is their real moment to shine. Without question this is the top festival in the state as brewers come from near and far, each looking to outdo the other with some rare goodies. For example, expect to enjoy these goodies: Alaskan Hopothermia, Breckenridge Barleywine Batch 1, Bell’s Hopslam (and look for a special tapping of Black Note), College Street Brother Dewey’s Date Night, Petrus Sour Red Ale, Grand Canyon Shaggy Bock, Great Divide

Peach Grand Cru, SanTanOak Aged Railslide, Magic Hat Dream Machine IPL, New Belgium Clutch, The Bruery Melange #3, Lost Abbey Dates of Wrath, Logsdon Seizoen Bretta, Left Hand Beer Week Sauce…and so much more. Not to mention the first ever Arizona appearance of Hess Brewing. For details on this festival and to buy tickets, head over to http://www. showclix.com/event/AzStrongBeerFest. VIP tickets for this event sold out in about two days, so don’t miss out on your chance to get in the door. Designated Driver tickets are also available and for those of you that get nervous at the thought of strong beer, they Guild encourages brewers to bring plenty of lower ABV beer as well. If you are looking to get a little nutrition in you before the festivities start, hit up Angels Trumpet Ale House at 2nd and Roosevelt for their special brunch featuring SanTan beers at a great price. The brunch starts at 10:00 so you have plenty of time to make it to the festival even if you have VIP tickets. There are plenty of people that don’t want the party to end. That’s okay because there are three after parties

Saturday night following the Strong Beer Festival. Look no further than T.T. Roadhouse in Scottsdale where they will be Burning the Candle at Both Ends with Abita beers including a Cajun food truck. That party should rock all night long. The rest of the week is just as action packed. Look for special beers and tappings all over town. Places like Ground Control, Angels Trumpet, OHSO, Flanny’s, Papago, Tops, Sun Devil, Whole Foods, World of Beer and all the rest of your favorite craft bars will be pouring all kinds of goodness for you. Elsewhere in this issue you will find a list of our top fifteen (or so) events to attend during Beer Week.

as ours is starting. San Francisco has so much going on they need ten days to do it right. With a Double IPA festival and a Barleywine festival serving as bookend events…it is quite the week. Check out www.craftbeer.com for a listing of all Beer Weeks. Might as well plan your vacation around that. So…Beer Week 2014 is upon us. For complete listing and details on all events go on over to http:// arizonabeerweek.com/.

Beer Weeks have become increasingly popular across the country. The Brewers Association lists well over 50, state, regional and city Beer Weeks. The granddaddy of all Beer Weeks is Philly Beer Week. Held in June, this week of fun and games opens up with the swinging of the Hammer of the Gods to tap the first keg of the week. From then on it is non-stop as they host hundreds of events throughout the nine county Philly market. Another pretty epic Beer Week wraps up just

...Continued from page 50 Enter the secret world of the brewer with a cocktail whose origins remain shrouded in mystery. The Hot Scotchy is among the rarest of drinks--sold for the first time during Arizona Beer Week 2012. Fans packed The Hungry Monk to get a sip of the Hot Scotchy. This year, the Arizona Society of Homebrewers (ASH) is bringing it back bigger and better.

This is a perfect opportunity to learn about homebrewing from the largest (and best) homebrewing clubs in the country. ASH members will be on hand to educate about brewing, beer styles and of course the Hot Scotchy!

MUDSHARK BREWERY: A BREWING REVOLUTION Mudshark is part of a craft brewing revolution that recognizes its ability to produce high quality products while being conscious about their effects on the environment. As more and more craft breweries begin to pop up across the country, it is evident that a unified push towards conservation and awareness is necessary.

The Biggest Little Beer Dinner Feb 17 | 6:00pm Pizzicletta

The Scotchy is made (perhaps clandestinely in professional circles) by collecting a pint of the hot unfermented concentrated malt sugar of a beer mash (wort) and topping it off with a few ounces of Scotch. This may seem like a simple arrangement until you recall the many varieties of Scotch. Multiply that number by the thousands of grain combinations that comprise the 90 beer styles recognized by the Brewers Association and you begin to see the Scotchy’s unique potential.

BEST BEER SELECTION IN ANTHEM!

On Arizona’s west coast, a brewing revolution is taking place. Mudshark Brewery already produces some of the best craft beers in the state, but it’s their continuing push towards a green brewery that is truly remarkable. Solar energy is one of Arizona’s most prevalent natural resources, and Mudshark utilizes the power of the sun to help brew delicious hand crafted beers. Most of the daily brewing operations are powered directly from solar energy. Along with solar, Mudshark has taken other steps towards becoming a green brewery by donating spent grain to local farmers, switching from propane to natural gas, and instituting a water conservation plan which will take action in the upcoming year.

Going green is great and all, but we all know that beer is the lifeblood of any brewery, and on that account Mudshark doesn’t disappoint. The beers coming out of the Lake Havasu City-based brewery are exceptional and diverse. No more are the days where boring beers and domestics dominate the market; Mudshark brewers concoct beers spanning styles, tastes, and preferences proving that there is a beer for everyone. Hop heads, malt maniacs, and anyone in between can find something from the local brewery that will appeal to their taste. Next time you find yourself reaching for another boring beer, remember there is a revolution taking place. Rise up, and do your part in supporting Arizona craft beer. Ask questions. Get involved. Only you can help put Arizona on the map as the great beer destination we know it can be. The future of beer is now, and Mudshark plans on sticking around.

Over 5000 years ago, in ancient Mesopotamia, human beings were enjoying a brand new invention of biotechnology: Beer! Of course they didn’t know that at the time, but they did know how to make beer. Over the millennia man has tirelessly worked to understand, improve, and perfect the beer-making process. Along the way we have discovered entirely new fields of study including enzymology, microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Today, the study of fermentation is Continued on page 78

Photo Caption: From left to right Arizona Wilderness brewers’ Brett Alered, Patrick WareDettler, and Jonathan Buford, and Borderlands brewers’ David Black and Nigel Knoy. Every winter, for one week, the great state of Arizona is magically transformed from an idyllic winter refuge (bemused by tales of polar vortices) to an enchanted wonderland where Arizona microbrews pour from taps high and low throughout the state. Preposterous you say? Nay, this fantastical week (Feb 15th - 22nd) is brought to you each year from the good folks at the Arizona Craft Brewers’ Guild. The week kicks off with the largest beer festival in the state (Strong Beer Fest) held at Steele Indian School Park on Sat. the 15th. Brewers from around the state and around the country will be serving up some of their strongest and mostdelicious brews. Borderlands Brewing Co. (Tucson, AZ) is no exception. In preparation for this year’s festival Borderlands teamed up the guys from Arizona Wilderness Brewing in Gilbert to produce a barley wine which will debut at the Strong Beer Fest. Made with locally grown wheat from Hayden Flour Mills this collaboration will surely be a crowd pleaser. Borderlands will also be bringing their Agua Bendita Anniversary Ale (they just had their 2nd anniversary this past December), their ever-popular Noche Dulce vanilla porter, and their Sonoran Red (and imperial red ale) to complement their
