GET YOUR BRUSH ON Dear Dentist, “I have heard a lot about brushing with an electric tooth brush? What are the major differences and should I make an investment in an electric tooth brush?” – Brusha, Brusha, Brusha “When it comes to the increase in oral health, there really is not a difference between using an electric toothbrush or a manual toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush is great in keeping you honest in the amount you brush. A lot of brushes have timers, so it can help you brush for a full 2 minutes. Also, the electric toothbrush has more strokes per minute which helps in getting teeth clean faster. If you are going to purchase an electric toothbrush, price does not matter, but size does. Make sure the brush part itself is small, about the size of a pencil eraser. Bigger brush heads have bigger surface areas which means they can’t get into the small hidden areas. Whether the brush spins, oscillates, vibrates, or goes back and forth - it doesn’t matter - it just needs to be a small pencil eraser-sized brush head. Overall, it is not the brush that matters, it is the brusher. “ Jason Barton D.D.S. and Becky McCormick RDH

again on February 9 as the country gears up to commemorate the Fab Four’s historic American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show exactly a half century ago. Theater Works at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts celebrates the golden anniversary with a nationally touring musical retelling of the Beatles story on April 17 at 7:30 pm. An astounding 73 million Americans tuned in to watch the lads from Liverpool that Sunday evening. Before you could say “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!” Beatlemania had swept the country. One week later, News In Brief put it this way: “There are rumors abound that the [Beatles] are Britain’s revenge for the Boston Tea Party.” This seismic, coast-to-coast outpouring of ectasy in 1964 was the perfect release for the country mourning a Presidential assassination which shook the country to its core. This wasn’t the first time American teenagers were whipped into a collective frenzy over pop stars. Frank Sinatra inspired this response decades earlier, and the hip-shaking antics of Elvis Presley created pandemonium on the same Sunday-night program eight years earlier. But never in American history had so many young people screamed so hard at exactly the same moment, a reaction made possible by television. Nielsen measured the exuberant foursome’s maiden performance as the most-watched program in U.S. history, reaching a full 45% of the population. By early April, 1965, the Beatles would occupy the top five places in the Billboard charts – a feat never achieved before or since. Tickets are $30/$40 plus $3.50 facility fees and may be purchased online at www.theaterworks.org or by phoning 623-815-7930.

‘In Secret’

‘Black Out’

‘In Bloom’

A retired criminal wakes up next to a murdered man with no recollection of what happened the night before and soon discovers that a group of gangsters have pinned him as the lone suspect in the theft of 20 kilos of coke - which he now has to get back within 24 hours. English subtitles (NR - 92 minutes) Stan: In the familiar style of the European ‘B’ action movie, this ‘cat and mouse’ story briskly moves along as we are introduced to the various ‘not so nice’ protagonists and the elements of our central character’s underworld lifestyle. This reviewer was reminded of the old axiom that often in life ‘There is no black and white, only shades of gray…’ depending on one’s point of view.

Set in 1995, two teenage girls in Tiblisi, Georgia struggle with societal, political and personal trials and tribulations. (NR - 100 minutes) Randy: The intentional slow pacing and occasional long, drawn out scenes seem to fit perfectly in setting the tone for what real life was (is) like in the struggling country. The humor is spread thin, as it probably was for those living in the time period. Making the film even truer to life are the two young actresses who make their debut performance. Both born in Tiblisi, their performances are naturally real and unforgettable.

Listen to Joseph J. Airdo on “Breakthrough Entertainment” 10 a.m. -Noon Saturdays on KPHX 1480 AM on BreakRadioShow.com

Elizabeth Olsen plays a sexually repressed young woman who, trapped into a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin (Tom Felton) by her domineering aunt (Jessica Lange), embarks on an illicit affair that leads to tragic consequences. Oscar Isaac also stars. (R - 101 minutes) Stan: Veteran actress Jessica Lange is the proverbial glue that holds this story together solely based on the depth of conviction, as she delivers a ‘not so enduring’ character at the onset. As the story progresses, the realization that the aunt is the one with the real insight, whether intentional or not, one’s heart goes out to her. Randy: You cannot fault Olsen or Isaac, but their characters came off irritating and childish. Your feelings towards them change so often, that you never connect, even during scenes that should be considered “emotional.” Lange, on the other hand... stole the show, in one of her best performances to date. Her character surprisingly became the one you sympathized for, and I am not sure if that was intentional or not. Overall, ‘In Secret’ is a decent movie with some serious character and editing/directional flaws.

Behind-the-Scenes

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

By Stan Robinson

Director Charlie Stratton (‘In Secret’) By Randy Montgomery

“At heart, it’s a story about that line where passion crosses over into dangerous obsession – and how it can unravel your life. I think we can all relate to that in some way, no matter the scope or the period.”

“I would walk the narrow streets where the story is set – research,

Colin Farrell plays a burglar who falls for an heiress (Jessica Brown Findlay) as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her. (PG-13 - 129 minutes) Having the familiarity of 2008’s ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ with informational lessons on fate and destiny interwoven throughout the central theme, outstanding performances abound including supporting cast members Russell Crowe as the ‘heavy’ (our production term for the bad guy), and Will Smith in a ‘Satan-esque’ type role, as the film leave’s one with very positive and reflective cerebral feelings about living, dying, and, our own afterlife possibilities.

“I wanted to maintain some of the purity of (Emile) Zola’s book (“Therese Raquin”), and keep the context of his world – but I also wanted to make it intriguing and fully accessible to modern audiences, to create an experience that’s also a damn good ride.” “The source material is so deep and so rich. Zola was obsessed with the culture of Paris, so I did great deal of research in Paris studying neighborhood maps, building plans, civil and church records, morgue procedures, even records of which houses had gas installed for lighting … all crucial clues to daily life in 1860’s Paris.”

NEW SCOREBOARDS ARE UP AND THE DRAGSTRIP AT WILD HORSE PASS NOW READY FOR THE PROS OF THE NHRA MELLO YELLO DRAG RACING SERIES The last time the Pros of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series hit the throttle on their Top Fuel Dragsters, Funny Cars and Pro Stock race cars, was last February at the former Firebird International Raceway. Changes at the facility have been in the wind since Firebird ran its last event on March 31, 2013. Since Firebird’s closing, Copper Train Development took over the lease on the multi-purpose motorsports facility for the next five years. Managing partner Paul Clayton recruited formed Daytona Motor Speedway VP Dick Hahne to be the track’s President. Former dragstrip owner Bill Schneider was recruited into the team for his dragstrip management experience. Steve Cooper was one of the few old employees to make the transition with the new management team as the track transformed into the now Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Over the past eleven months, the center of attention for upgrades has been the dragstrip and its surrounding facilities. In that time, just about everything relating to drag racing has either been replaced or repaired. From off strip necessities, new scales are in the offices, tower and suites have all been remodeled. Not to mention that 800 new seats have been added to the starting line. On strip repairs played a major role in upgrades to the facility. 550 feet of the dragstrip was torn out and replaced with new rebar reinforced concrete. The timing system was replaced with a brand new Compulink system and the scoreboards have been replaced with some great looking, state of the art electronic score boards with four foot numbers and win lights that will “burn the retina.” With the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals just days away, both Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park and NHRA crews are putting the finishing

touches on both the track and the facility. After complaints about a couple of bumps in the new concrete during Pro Stock testing two weeks ago, NHRA came in and smoothed the surface of the track. Today, NHRA crews were putting rubber down on the track while crews painted the center and sides of starting line with the Mello Yello colors. This year’s Nationals will include a new attraction. A miniature drag strip has been laid down in front of the grand stands for the lake. Traxxas will be running RC drags on the strip and select fans will have an opportunity to take on some of the Pros in a chance to win a Traxxas RC car of their own. NHRA teams have been at the track

since leaving Pomona. Their rigs and rides are staged on the property and ready to unload later this week. Top Fuel Dragster driver Khalid alBalooshi, Top Fuel Funny Car driver John Force and Pro Stock driver Jason Line all left Pomona with a Wally after final round wins in eliminations on Sunday. Arizona’s own Mike DePalma will roll into Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park as the points leader in Comp Eliminator after taking home the Wally in Pomona.

Bring it on NHRA! Let’s see who will be the first of the Pros to “tame the track” and take home a Wally from Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Our hats go off to the management team at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Paul Clayton, Dick Hahne, Bill Schneider, Steve Cooper and the rest of the WHP team have all worked hard to build a home for motorsports’ competitors and fans in the Valley of the Sun. Permission to use courtesy of Arizona Auto Scene

Qualifying for the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals takes place this Friday and Saturday (February 21 & 22, 2014.) Final rounds of eliminations will be on Sunday, February 23.

Ted’s Hotdogs: It’s like eating off of your grill, but better. your food, eying the cooking hotdogs and burgers as you wait.

By Santino DeFranco Twitter: @Tinodefranco If you’re picturing one of those stands from the movies where a short, fat guy with a deep New York accent is serving lawyers in suits a hotdog with extra onions on it, wipe that out of your head right now. Seriously, get rid of it. Ted’s Hotdogs in Tempe is better. I mean, Ted’s is so much better it’s like comparing beef brisket from a Hungry Man frozen dinner to a filet mignon from Durant’s and saying, “Well, they both come from cows, right?” No! All of Ted’s delicious delicacies are charbroiled on an open flame with charcoal underneath. That’s right, charcoal! How awesome is that? Heck, I have a propane grill at home, and sometimes hate myself for it. If it weren’t such a hassle I would always go with the charred little nuggets that make everything taste better. That said, it is a hassle, so I let Ted’s cook my food.

Any way you char it, Ted’s beats other fast food joints and should be the go-to place for lunches, whether on the go or not. Their food is clean and you get to watch it cook on the open flame while you wait. Take it from me, let Ted’s cook your afternoon barbeque and eat something that tastes better than anything cooked in your backyard on a propane grill. And, as always, let me know where you’re eating @tinodefranco on Twitter. Check out Ted’s full menu at www.tedshotdogs.com or stop in at 1755 E. Broadway Rd., Tempe, AZ 85282.

The inside’s nothing to write home about. There’s no hostess or wait staff, as food is ordered at the grill and more often than not, you will be waiting in line for much longer than you’ll be happy about. After you order your food, you’ll continue to cover the roars of your stomach—futilely I must add—while you wait in line to pay for *****************ECRWSS****

When you’re finally asked from whoever’s cooking that day what you want to eat, you’ll have more than just hotdogs to choose from. Of course, hotdogs are an option; as are footlongs and jumbos (all beef). But, how’s a charbroiled burger sound? Exactly. It sounds great. How about you try a chicken sandwich with or without barbeque sauce? Okay. Or, for the real lovers of all things charred, there are bratwursts, white hots, and sausage, both Polish and Italian—I have to side with my people on this one: Italian. For a side, I always order fries. They’re thin and crispy and served in a folded piece of paper, which for some reason makes me feel that they’re better than other fries that aren’t served in a folded piece of paper. Call me crazy. If fries aren’t your fancy, go with the onion rings. Have an important meeting or date and don’t want to scare anyone off with your odiferous onion smell fermenting? Potato salad is for you. But again, just go with the fries. I also generally finish my (very healthy?) lunch at Ted’s with a handmade milk shake, and a double bypass on my heart.

In King Tut’s Egypt (around 1300 BC), the commoners drank beer and the upper class drank wine.

When Leif Ericsson landed in North America in A.D. 1001, he was so impressed by the proliferation of grapevines that he named it Vinland. The lip of a red wine glass is sloped inward to capture the aromas of the wine and deliver them to your nose.

Wine has so many organic chemical compounds it is considered more complex than blood serum.

STRONG BEER FESTIVAL RECAP Strong Beer Festival lived up to every part of its name. The beer was strong, the weather was strong and the thousands of people that attended were certainly festive. It was a great party and a great celebration of beer. Local breweries were dominant this year. The new layout to the festival served to highlight, not just the local breweries but further highlight each part of Arizona and the breweries there. That allowed attendees to seek out the breweries they wanted to try from different regions of the state. Established local breweries had a pretty good day. Lines were steady all day at Sonoran, SanTan, Sun Up Thunder Canyon, Grand Canyon, College Street and Papago. In fact there were some people who felt that Papago’s Mango Chile IPA collaboration with Breckenridge Brewing was the highlight of the event. Many folks also enjoyed Sonoran’s cask conditioned Inebriator with Raspberries. Some of the daring started blending it with White Chocolate Ale, creating a beer that was simply being called “The Mix.” Despite the constant flow at the established breweries, the newer breweries were the ones commanding most of the attention. Fate’s Barrel Aged Candy Bar Milk Stout was one of the first special releases and the line for that stretched as far as you could see. Other lines could be seen popping up at Arizona Wilderness Brewing, Historic Brewing, Dragoon and Huss Brewing. While the local beers were outstanding, many of the out of state players got a lot of attention as well. Several breweries were attending their first festival in Arizona, but only one was being talked about throughout the event. Mike Hess Brewing Company out of San Diego literally poured their first beer in Arizona at noon when the event opened. They brought four different beers with them including Ficus – a dark Belgian ale brewed with

figs which seemed to be the favorite. They promised we would see a lot of their beers all over the state as they have already sent a truck load to their distributor. With seven people in attendance, including founder, Mike Hess, the brewery made a strong

Hand Ambidextrous Ale Step 6 and Piraat Triple Hop. Shmaltz offered a comparison between Jewbelation and Funky Jewbelation while Great Divide brought four beers to tickle our palates, including Peach Grand Cru. Alaskan double teamed us with

the Placentia, CA based brewery also had steady lines throughout the day. Many people declared it their favorite booth and the Melange #3 created some disappointment when it ran out about 30 minutes before the festival was over. The food choices were excellent featuring a variety of food truck fare. Trucks from The Brat Haus in Scottsdale and The Hungry Monk in Chandler (aptly named The Travelling Monk) were especially popular. There were no excuses for festival goers to go hungry at this event. Nor would anybody get dehydrated from too much beer and sun. Tops Liquors once again sponsored the Hydration Station offering free bottled water to the masses. Dozens of cases of cold water were given away in what can only be termed an act of charity from owner Greg Eccles.

showing. There were tons of other popular beers and breweries. Avery released Maharaja double IPA to Arizona and Bell’s once again served up a keg of Hopslam, although this time they backed it up with a keg of Black Note, another beer that had the swarms gathering. Breckenridge released their Barrel Aged Barleywinehere and Big Sky brought one of the only kegs of Ivan the Terrible that has ever been in the state. Other releases included Magic Hat Dream Machine IPL, Left

new releases offering up the first kegs of this year’s release of Hopothermia and brand new Rough Draft Series beer, Taku River Red. The first keg of Logsdon SeizoenBretta made an appearance and was a popular beer. Finally, Lost Abbey snuck in a keg of Dates of Wrath poured off their distributor’s truck. Another highlight of the festival was the appearance of The Bruery. Pouring no less than four beers including Humulus Lager, Sour in the Rye, Barrel Aged 5 Golden Rings and Melange #3,

There you have it, a quick recap of the 2014 Strong Beer Festival. By the time you read this Beer Week will be in full swing so I hope you have already attended some of the events, but there are plenty other don’t miss events. These include Flanny’s Colorado Cask night with firkins of beer from seven different breweries along with other specialties on Thursday night, World of Beer Tempe will have their barrel aged festival the same night…definitely worth trying to hit both of those events. Friday features include the event that was named the best Beer Week event in 2013 by the Arizona Society of Homebrewers, Bell’s Eccentric Café comes to Arizona. Starting at 3:00 PM and offering up 16 different, and some rare, beers from the Kalamazoo based brewery, The Hungry Monk will be jumping all night. Hope you are having a great beer week. The sad part of it is that it is always over too soon and the planning for 2015 begins almost right away. Until next time…

GLIDING TO NEW HEIGHTS Local figure skaters Madeline Aaron and Max Settlage shine as a top pair By Michelle Talsma Everson Madeline Aaron and Max Settlage are quite the pair. No, not like that — the two Arizona natives (Aaron hails from Scottsdale and Settlage from Flagstaff) are at the top of their game in the pairs division of figure skating. Recently, they represented Team USA at the final event in the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP) Series in Estonia. This was the second JGP event of the season for them, and they placed fourth. Earlier in the season, they placed second at a JGP event in Belarus. The pair also earned the 2013 U.S. junior bronze medal and are the 2011 U.S. novice champions, among many other accolades.

Aaron, 19, and Settlage, 21, teamed up in 2010 when they met while training in Scottsdale. Aaron, who attended Chaparral High School, has been skating since the age of 5 and Settlage began at age 10. Both have experience skating with other partners and solo, but seem to successfully complement each other on and off the ice. “It [skating as a pair] is less nervewrecking than skating all by yourself,” Settlage said. “With each other, we definitely have a comfort zone,” Aaron added. Currently, the duo trains in Colorado Springs, Colo. and are looking forward to a busy 2014, including the Junior World competition in March. Settlage said they also have their sights set on the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

In addition to their studies — Aaron is a part-time nursing student and Settlage is interested in art and graphic design — the pair train six days a week in addition to focusing on strength and cardiovascular work. They also concentrate on off-ice lifts, dance and yoga. Both skaters have a ballet background and enjoy using what they’ve learned on the ice.

“With ballet skills we can tell a story on the ice through dance movements,” Aaron said. Both said they enjoy the gracefulness and artistry that comes along with figure skating. And, with several international competitions under their belts, they have enjoyed the traveling that comes along with success in their chosen sport. “Traveling is always a learning

experience; from dealing with time changes to learning about different cultures, it’s awesome,” Aaron said.

While figure skating is definitely their career of choice — both emphasize that they’re honored to represent the USA — Aaron plans on eventually going into nursing and Settlage hopes to make a name for himself in the field of animation. “We’ve known each other for so long; we met when I was driving down to Scottsdale to train,” Settlage said. “We’re a good fit — we’re both competitive but also want to just have fun with it.” For more great sports and lifestyle info, read AZ Sports & Lifestyle Magazine. www.AZSAL.com

Train headlines and over 20 more to perform at Liquid Sol Music Festival an extensive craft beer garden, live charity auction, fundraising activities, firefighter car extrication, a kids corner and much more.

The inaugural Liquid Sol Music Festival is an all-ages event with three stages of live music performances by local

and national artists including headliner and Grammy Award-winning band, Train. It will also have over 25 vendors,

San Francisco natives and pop-rock band, Train, formed in 1994. The band consists of lead singer Pat Monahan, guitarist Jimmy Stafford and drummer Scott Underwood. Together they have transitioned from rock to a great combination of adult contemporary and family-friendly alternative poprock. The trio has released multiple award winning tracks including “Drops of Jupiter,” “Calling All Angels” and “Hey Soul Sister.” Their most recent studio album, “California 37,” was a major success on Billboard charts, which featured the single “Drive By” that peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. According to Billboard. com, the album consists of romance, mortality and pop culture making it appealing to a wide range of music listeners.

There will also be over 20 performances by national and local bands including The All-American Rejects, Authority Zero, Blind Melon, BoDeans, Buckcherry, Cracker, Ed Kowalczyk, Everclear, Fuel, Gin Blossoms, Lovehammers, The White Buffalo, Tonic, Vertical Horizon, 28 North, 7Horse and Kelley James. The festival is an all ages event. Kids 10 and under are free with purchase of paid adult admission. There will also be a special area dedicated to kids featuring more child-friendly activities including coloring stations, firefighter meet and greets, firefighter kids agility course, fire safety teaching course and more. Parents and kids will have the opportunity to stop by and receive a special matching wristband with contact information incase the child should get separated from their parents during the event.

Babies are born without knee caps. They don’t appear until 2-6 years of age. 66
