TUCSON SPEEDWAY BACK IN ACTION SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd The weather has warmed and so has the action at Southern Arizona’s premier asphalt track Tucson Speedway (formerly Tucson Raceway Park). The season resumes on Saturday night February 22, with Late Models, Pro Stock s, X-Mods and the fabulous Hornets. In addition, it will be the first Spectacular Spectator Drags, where the spectators become part of the show with a single elimination drag race around the track. Soccer vans race Ferraris; VW’s blow off Mustangs; Corvettes will be whipped by lowriders, etc. There will be Fire Truck rides through the pits for the kids and Flying Banana Race Car rides around the track for the adults. The action gets underway at 7pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. The season point’s battles in the four divisions have heated back up with only a third of the season remaining. Scott Strachan leads the Late Model Division by a slim 17-points over rookie Don Dority. Only three races remains for this very competitive division. In the X-Mod Division, only 55-points

separate the top four drivers with David Levitt leading Ned Champine by just 6-points. In third is Bob Cramb followed closely by last event’s winner rookie Will Hunholz. With just seven events left for this fast division it is anybody’s guess whom the champion will be. Loren Sheffield has a comfortable margin for the Pro Stock Division title. With just eight races to the end of the season, every race is crucial. 59-points separate second place through sixth place. One bad race could change things dramatically. Everyone will be looking for good results on Saturday night. Hornet Division driver Kyle Milburg leads the points chase over rookie Ryan Pagano. Third is another rookie Tony Helm. With eight races remaining it will be a toss-up on who will be crowned division champion at the season ending race on June 7. It’s a not to miss night at the 3/8-mile high banked paved oval located next to the Pima County Fairgrounds at 11955 S. Harrison Rd. Tucson, AZ. Seattle-based video game developer PopCap is no stranger to creating pick-up-and-play fun for mobile devices, computers and consoles. Its 2001 blockbuster “Bejeweled” and 2007’s “Peggle” created affordable and easy-to-learn entertainment and did their part to help revitalize the puzzle game genre. PopCap changed things up a bit in 2009, launching a zany tower defense game where anthropomorphic plants protected their owner’s home from an onslaught of cartoon zombies. With the success of “Plants vs. Zombies” and its sequel “Plants vs. Zombies 2,” things have naturally escalated to all-out war with the next-generation strategy/action game “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare.” The garden is under attack again, but this time the zombies have armed themselves to their rotting teeth with wacky weapons and skills in hopes of destroying the garden and eating some brains. Thankfully, the plants are ready to protect their turf with some very special abilities of their own, but it will take more than the tactics of the past to win the war. Fast reflexes and some sharp shooting will need to come into play, helping you drive the relentless undead back to where they came from. “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare” is a third-person shooter/tower defense game, bringing a new level of frantic, fast-paced control to the strategy and puzzle games of PopCap’s past. The fun starts with a four-player co-op mode where friends team up as various high-powered plants to take on wave after wave of zombies. Aside from blasting and biting your enemies, you’ll also be able to pepper the battlefield with flowers and fungi that will lend a hand – or a root – when danger approaches. The game’s multiplayer mode pits 12 plants against 12 zombies in various modes of play using characters with distinct abilities, equipment and weapons.

Featuring David Krakauer, Clarinet, and Matt Haimowitz, Cello “The most ethereally beautiful music of the twentieth century was first heard on a brutally cold January night in 1941, at the Stalag VIIIA prisoner-of-war camp, in Görlitz, Germany.” This is how musicologist Alex Ross introduces Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time,” written while the composer was imprisoned in an internment camp. Premiered with the camp’s German officers seated in the first row, the quartet’s unusual instrumentation resulted from the available musicians among Messiaen’s fellow prisoners. Rarely heard in live performance, this stunning work will be performed by some of chamber music’s most respected artists. Tickets available online at UApresents.org or by calling the Box Office at (520) 621-3341, TTY: (520) 626-3980. Student, Senior, Group and Military discounts available.

Take a Stroll with Niccole: Douglas Springs Full Moon Hike

Happy recent Valentine’s Day to all the outdoor enthusiasts in Arizona! I decided to do a romantic night time hike on Valentine’s evening, and considering it was a full moon, we went out and hit Douglas Springs trail on that gorgeous and warm evening. Tucson city was glowing and the sky was on fire as the winter sun set. Night hiking offers a very different experience and I highly recommend it, especially as the warm season approaches. This is a very popular destination for Tucson hikers and now I know exactly why. The trails out here in Saguaro East are some of the best maintained trails I

have traveled recently. They are wide and full of stepping stones and not too rocky, there are some steep areas but I would consider this a beginner’s hike. I read a lot of reviews online and people did not think this was a beginning hike so let’s call it intermediate as to not lead anyone on. It is more likely that you will see and hear our local wildlife if you hit the trails at twilight, but this hike would be beautiful any time of day. We saw many birds, bats and rabbits and also encountered a variety of spiders, beetles and moths. Throughout the hike we heard the alluring howl of coyotes and owls as well as all the other little animals that come alive when the city goes to sleep. The full moon was so bright we only used our flashlights until it came out and then we turned them off for the rest of the hike. There are washes throughout this trek and stunning, staggering canyons that lit up deeply as the moon swept over us. This would be an excellent trail for trail running and I can’t wait to come back out during the day time. It was an

awesome hike that I will never forget. To get there: Take Speedway Blvd all the way until it dead ends at the trailhead. There are many other little trails you can hike around out here too, get curious and go outside and take a

trek this season!

Scientists estimate that sleep lost due to daylight saving time reduces the average lifespan by nearly two full months. 86 14

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

ABOUT THE FILM

In ‘Alien: Resurrection’ (1997), Sigourney Weaver really does pull off that famous half-court basketball shot!

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Mark Jones (‘Scorned’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “Scorned,” which is now available on Blu-ray and DVD, a romantic weekend turns horrific and sadistic when a young woman (AnnaLynne McCord) discovers that her boyfriend (Billy Zane) is having an affair with her best friend (Viva Bianca). “It is a guy’s worst nightmare. He gets caught cheating by his text messages. It is a lesson to make sure to erase them if you are going to do stuff like that. The lovely girl that he goes away to a weekend lake house with kind of turns into a young, pretty Kathy Bates from ‘Misery.’ Sadie (AnnaLynne McCord) probably says it best when she says, ‘You men need to learn to delete your text messages a little more often.’ I did the picture purely to entertain people. I tried to have fun with the movie and not really take myself

seriously in terms of some underlying message. I think it moves quickly. I am one of the directors who has ADD so I tend to cut my pictures very quick. I take things out of the movie. Most directors want to keep things in. But my voice is saying, ‘Let’s cut. Let’s get going.’ I just want people to just enjoy the picture. “No matter how many pictures you work on, direct or write, every time you do another project you learn something. You think that you have got to the point where you know how to do [everything] but what is interesting is that you learn something new every time you make a movie. Just as an overview from a director - and I am going to speak for Steven Spielberg

or somebody on that level - I bet you that every picture he does he walks away and learns something new.” Mark Jones

‘The Lego Movie’ ~ Creative, ingenious and managed to capture the heart and spirit of the toy. Funny and heartfelt and the title song is unforgettable. Grade: A+

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less.

‘RoboCop’ ~ There have been too many remakes of 80’s films to mention. The original was somewhat of a classic in its own right, this is not. Grade: C-

‘Gloria’ ~ Character driven, slow-moving drama from Chile. Paulina García’s performance is natural and award-worthy. A must-see for that alone. Grade: A

‘Like Father, Like Son’ ~ A heartfelt Japanese import that quietly wins you over. A small film with a big heart that is worth seeking out. Grade: A

‘The Monuments Men’ ~ There are hits, then there are misses. Clooney and crew missed with this one big time on all levels. Chalk this one up at history. Grade: C-

‘The Past’ ~ A drama w/ enough twists to keep you engaged. The French setting for an Iranian film is even more intriguing. A must see. Grade: A

MOVIE TWEETS!

ToP 10 Movies “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013):

Inspired by “The Wrath of Khan,” this sequel merits its own mention partially for Pine’s heroics as Kirk. “Rise of the Guardians” (2012): Even in voice only, Pine makes a credible Jack Frost in this animated fantasy. “People Like Us” (2012): Minus action frills, Pine does fine work as a man who meets the sister (Elizabeth Banks) he never knew he had. “This Means War” (2012): Pine and Tom Hardy are engaging as CIA agents who amp up their spy game while competing for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon). “Celeste & Jesse Forever” (2012): His definitely is a supporting role, but Pine adds to the enjoyment of the comedy-drama of ex-spouses (Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg) trying to remain friends. “Unstoppable” (2010): Denzel Washington is a heady acting match, and Pine fares well opposite him in director Tony Scott’s tale of two train men trying to stop a runaway locomotive.

“Small Town Saturday Night” (2010): One of Pine’s lower-budget efforts yields

one of his most enjoyable performances, as he plays an aspiring country star trying to handle a troubled romance. “Star Trek” (2009): The boots of enterprising spaceman James Kirk are not easy for a young actor to fill, and it’s much to Pine’s credit that he’s a believable forerunner to iconic William Shatner. “Bottle Shock” (2008): Pine must have had much fun refreshmentwise while making this story of competition among winemakers.

“The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” (2004): Pine makes

an appealing leading man for returnee Anne Hathaway’s Princess Mia.

Checking in with Andrew Santino

By kate o'hare

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, ABC premieres “Mixology,” a comedy set in one night in one bar – high-end Manhattan watering hole Mix – as 10 single people try to find love, or at least lust. Blake Lee stars as Tom, a man recently dumped by his fiancee, whose friends – confident Cal (Craig Frank) and fast-talking Bruce (Andrew Santino) – are tossing him into the singles pool after a decade off the market. First, he meets beautiful but brutal attorney Maya (Ginger Gonzaga), which leaves him in tears. It gets worse after that. “Cal is the more levelheaded, clearthinking man,” says Santino, “and Tom is very impulsive and nervous and riddled with anxiety, and Bruce is the devil on his shoulder, if you will. I’m trying to get Tom to do something he’s not used to. Instead of putting his feet in the water, I tell him to jump all the way in all the time.”

f all the perks that come with being on TV, having a wonderful wardrobe with perfect accessories has to be at the top of the list. And Wendy Williams, whose eponymous talk show airs weekdays on BET and in syndication, is genuinely happy when she opens up her closet. “I don’t decide what I am going to wear until I get in in the morning,” she says. Before Williams selects from the racks of dresses, skirts, blouses and sweaters – all in graduated hues – every item is prepped. They are organized in a way that would do a drill sergeant with OCD proud. “Everything on the rack is tailored and fitted, and she feels like it is her idea even though it is really my idea,” says wardrobe stylist Memsor Kamarake. “She knows she can pull anything and knows it fits. It is her whim.” The shoe collection alone would make most women drool. She has the same Louboutins in flats and heels, though at 5 feet, 11 inches, Williams finds heels are not necessities.
