Little Leaguers get Big Time Surprise

As part of the team’s Give Back Jersey Program, players from the Diamondbacks were on hand for an Ahwatukee Little League game that took place last Saturday at Salt River Fields. Their efforts have resulted in the donation of uniforms and caps to over 22,000 Little League players and coaches as well as a $500,000 contribution to the program.

Cub Power

In a terrific display of tremendous power by the 200 lb, 21 year old shortstop, Baez recently hammered a pitch that flew over the forty foot net behind the left field fence and shattered the window of an unsuspecting car. In other words, expect plenty of souvenir balls this year for Cubby fans in the outfield Wrigley stands.

Prospect on the Prowl

Heat Advisory

Young third baseman Matt Davidson will turn 23 just before the 2014 Major League Baseball season opens and could be on the verge of an entirely new setting as the Sox starting third baseman. Traded in the offseason from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Davidson could be a symbol of a new and exciting beginning for the White Sox.

Reds manager Bryan Price is more than impressed with his two young and plenty powerful arms in camp, prized pitchers Robert Stephenson and Michael Lorenzen. Catcher mitts are poppin, as both have flirted with 100 mph fastballs at times. “It was terrific to see,” Price said after a recent practice. “A lot of times with hard throwers, you expect a lot more physical effort in the delivery. Not so with Stephenson and Lorenzen.”

Three Kauffman Kings With the most sound and well-balanced roster the Royals have seen since the early 2000’s, there is a true feeling of security with the majority of this team’s major pieces. KC can achieve playoff baseball in 2014 if expected surges materialize from three Kaufmann kings - Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler and Mike Moustakas.

In the baseball kingdom, those in the know fully expect right-handed pitchers Eddie Butler and Jon Gray to be helping the Rockies win this year despite little experience. Butler, a supplemental first-round pick in 2012, comes into the season having made just 41 appearances, 40 of which were starts (16-6, 1.90 ERA, 198 strikeouts in 217 1/3 innings, topping out at Double-A). Gray, the third overall pick last year, has all of nine starts (40, 1.93, 51 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings at Rookie and high Class A). Don’t be fooled however. These two can straight up play.

DIAMONDBACKS ARMED AND READY FOR 2014

It’s been said “if you can’t bite, you’d better not show your teeth.” Heading into the 2014 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks certainly have plenty of reasons to flash a photogenic grin.

Tied for fifth in the Majors with 95 home runs since 2011, new D-backs outfielder Mark Trumbo is one of 10 players in baseball with 30 home runs in each of the last two seasons. “Trumbo’s another guy in the lineup, other than Paul Goldschmidt, who can put up crooked numbers in a hurry and who has the chance to hit 30-40 homers and 100 RBI,” said D-backs Executive Vice President& General Manager Kevin Towers. “When you’re an opposing starting pitcher and our lineup turns over again and you have Goldy and Trumbo probably coming up in the same inning, that’s tough.” Trumbo’s D-backs teammate powered his way toward serious NL MVP consideration with a league-best .551 slugging percentage, 75 extra-base hits, 125 RBI, 332 total bases and a league-high-tying 36 home runs last season. Goldschmidt also had a busy offseason, heading to Sydney, Australia, to promote late March’s two-game Opening Series vs. the Dodgers and also joining the D-backs’ contingent that went to extend an

“Goldy’s a special individual and a special ballplayer,” said Towers. “In all my years, I haven’t been around many like him. He’s always willing to do whatever we ask for the organization, whether it be to fly to Australia to promote the Opening Series or to fly to L.A. to meet with Tanaka. He’s an incredible teammate. You get in here in the morning, and sometimes he beats our trainers in. He’s a great husband and a great role model. In a very short amount of time, he’s become the face of this organization.”

RECORD 6 DVR. COX.COM/CONTOUR

With a returning core group of players that includes last year’s National League MVP runner-up at first base, a pair of All-Star southpaws on the mound, a Silver Slugger manning second, a two-time Gold Glove right fielder, the NL’s top innings man among relievers and baseball’s No. 1 pitching prospect in the wings, the D-backs quickly got to work this past winter shoring up their bullpen and starting rotation, as well as finding a corner outfield bat for the upcoming season.

offer to Japanese free agent pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.

In addition to trading for White Sox reliever Addison Reed, the D-backs jumped at the chance to add veteran free agent Bronson Arroyo. Since 2005, the former Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds starter ranks among the Major League leaders in starts (T-1st, 297), quality starts (3rd, 183), innings pitched (3rd, 1,895.2) and wins (6th, 119). “It’s good to have a guy with that kind of experience in the rotation, especially with a bunch of young pitchers,” D-backs catcher Miguel Montero said about Arroyo. “He takes the ball every five days regardless, and he eats innings. He knows what he’s doing on the mound.” Towers added, “Character here is as important as skill. We have no egos. That’s what I love most about this team. We have a lot of great, talented players… guys that are humble, play the game the way it should be played and be good role models who treat our fans well. They are the types of people we want wearing the D-backs’ uniform. We feel they represent this city, the organization and our fan base in a big way.”

The first World Series was played between Pittsburgh and Boston in 1903 and was a nine-game series. Boston won the series 5-3. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

OCTANE RACEWAY CELEBRATES EXPANDED OUTDOOR PATIO WITH SPRING TRAINING KICK-OFF PARTY Win One Year of Free Racing in ‘The Brickyard’ Patio Cornhole Tournament and Free Kart Racing The only permanent indoor and outdoor kart racing venue in the United States has just expanded their facility to include a semi-private outdoor patio aptly dubbed ‘The Brickyard’. Octane Raceway extends the spring training experience for fans with their new 5,000 square foot outdoor patio. To celebrate the new space, Octane is hosting a Spring Training Kick-Off Party in ‘The Brickyard’ Friday, February 28 directly following the afternoon Rockies vs. Diamondbacks game. Baseball fans can enjoy free kart racing, drink specials and take part in a Cornhole tournament with the champion winning free kart racing for one year. “Although we’ve been in the Valley for ten years, we opened Octane Raceway in the Pavilions last July. Since this is our first spring training season at our new location, we want to make it memorable,” says Scott Sanders, president of Octane Raceway. “With

15 teams now playing in the Cactus League, there is so much energy and anticipation in the Valley each spring. We are tapping into that excitement with our Spring Training Kick-Off Party. We have many post-game activities planned – both on the racetrack and on the patio, that will top off a great afternoon at the ballpark.” The Brickyard at Octane Raceway gives Arizona sports enthusiasts another way to enjoy the entertainment venue. Approximately half of the extended patio is covered in pavers, allowing for casual seating that can easily be converted for an outdoor dinner party or event space for up to 50 guests. The other half of the patio is grass with redwood picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, lounge furniture and three Cornhole sets ready for action. The grass area accommodates up to 50 people and can easily be combined with the paved section of the patio for larger parties. The patio is open to the public but can also be exclusively reserved for social or corporate events.

The patio moniker, The Brickyard, pays homage to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Originally created in 1909 using a mixture of tar and crushed stone, the IMS racetrack surface was quickly improved using more than 3.2 million bricks throughout the two and a half mile course. As new materials became available, the track was eventually covered with asphalt although a one-yard section of brick remains at the Start/Finish line commemorating the time-tested surface. The Brickyard Spring Training Kick-Off Party festivities take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 28. For baseball fans with ticket stubs from that day’s Rockies vs. Diamondbacks game, Octane is offering free racing from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Guests can also compete

in a Cornhole tournament with the champion receiving one year of free kart racing. The tournament will begin at 4:30 p.m. with brackets assigned at that time. Drink specials will run throughout the party featuring two dollar domestic and import draughts. The Spring Training Kick-Off Party is open to the public. For more information, please visit www. Angels’ Fastball Just Plain Devilish The Angels worked hard during the offseason to beef up their pitching rotation, and do so they did. Enter 22 year old prototype power reliever R.J. Alvarez. His fastball is nasty and can register triple digits, consistently sitting at 95-96 mph, with movement. Master of the occasional change up, his tight power slider is a potentially plus pitch, sending countless minor league hitters back to the dugout feeling helpless and confused. Alvarez struck out 14.6 batters per nine innings last year in the High-A California League. Now in the big show, batters beware. The pitching system in Anaheim has been upgraded.

That event is followed by the Family Relay, which consists of 2 kids and 2 adults taking laps around the warning track. The first-year event is in partnership with The Charro Foundation, the group of local Scottsdale businessmen with a long-standing history of funding youth education programs in the area. THE REBIRTH OF LAS SENDAS GOLF CLUB The rebirth of the Las Sendas Golf Club is complete. Now in the 5th year of ownership, the primarily Canadian consortium of Lloyd & Wayne McBean along with partners Ken Elias, Ian Warrack and John Musil, (American) fulfilled their goal of constructing the additional amenities needed in order to be considered a “world class” golf facility. The list of improvements costing more than 10 million dollars is long and includes a newly renovated and expanded clubhouse and patio, featuring 3 unique restaurant operations and a new state of the art kitchen to service the very popular dining facilities. The group did not stop there, adding a 13,000 sq. ft. banquet facility called the Vistas Pavilion. This facility can accommodate tournaments, conferences, weddings or any other party with space available for groups up to 400. The monumental Vistas Pavilion was constructed high on the peaks of the golf course property showcasing the awesome vistas of the Phoenix valley, Camelback and entire west facing skyline.

With the golf course only partially complete cart paths were poured on all 18 holes of the desert floor; sewer and water including electricity were brought onto the golf course in order to complete construction of the air conditioned comfort station and newly constructed Oasis Snack Bar located between the 3rd hole and the 14th tee. Another new building was constructed to house the Pro Shop, located next to the clubhouse offering private locker rooms for the growing membership. You will also find a halfway house and public restroom, conveniently located next to the 10th tee box. The practice facilities were improved and a teaching area constructed for The Las Sendas Golf Academy now headed up by PGA National Teacher of the Year, Mike Malaska. New club storage facilities, shoe shine room and a cart fleet, complete the long list of improvements which now make Las Sendas truly a “world class” facility. The restaurants are unique in every way. The Grille at Las Sendas, is a comfortable sports lounge offering a wide array of menu items from breakfast to dinner. More than a dozen hi-def. televisions broadcast all major sporting events including NFL Ticket. The Patio at Las Sendas offers live entertainment 6 nights each week and boasts some of the best views in the valley. You can book your reservation on Open Table. The ownership group also added Bogey’s Member’s Lounge, a private dining room for the growing membership. This room is dedicated to the membership of Las

Sendas and plays an integral part of the club’s atmosphere, allowing member to hold their weekly functions and activities without interruption from the other restaurant operations. The Las Sendas restaurants are unique experience in every way. You will find a vibrant atmosphere with customers flocking to the facilities each and every evening to enjoy the breathtaking sunset views, live entertainment and culinary expertise not commonly found at a golf facility! In 2012 Las Sendas was selected “Best Golf Course in Phoenix” by New Times Magazine and in 2013 won “Best Golf Course East Valley”, by the residents of the East Valley and presented by the East Valley Tribune. Las Sendas is the proud host of the Alice Cooper, Solid Rock Pro Am, The Coyotes Golf Tournament and the 2014 Canadian PGA Club Professional’s Championship. Las Sendas also hosts more than 21 events annually which include Live Theatre, Musical Productions, and Theme Night Events. Memberships are available at this time and are 100% refundable and there is no waiting list to exit. The club carries no mortgage and promises to keep the golf course from being leveraged. This certainly provides promise of longevity in the always challenging golf industry. Even before the renovation, Las Sendas was acclaimed by avid golfers and sports writers. It was ranked the 10th most challenging and one of the top 100 courses in the nation according to two ZAGAT Surveys. The land where Las Sendas is located also has some Wild West history. It was owned by Tom Mix, silent film star, in the late 1930’s. He and John Wayne used to ride horses in these hills. Las Sendas means “The Pathways”, which is what you will feel like you are playing, pathways thru the pristine desert. Las Sendas Golf Club was Robert Trent Jones’s first Arizona project and proved to be more than an average desert course. It’s a tribute to how well a golf course design can work with the natural desert. The design of a skill challenging course and the preservation of the desert world exist in harmony. Put Las Sendas at the top of your must play list next time you plan a trip to the Phoenix area. Las Sendas Golf Club is located in the East valley off Power Road and Thomas, with easy access from the 202 freeway at 7555 E. Eagle Crest Drive in Mesa, AZ. For more info, call 480-396-4000, or visit the website at www.lassendas.com.

The tallest player in Major League history is pitcher Jon Rauch, who is six feet, eleven inches tall. February 26th, 2014 - March 4th, 2014

the team, these guys are consistently good. However, one must simply acknowledge at a time like this that the Giants’ baseball uniforms are perfect and timeless. Orange and Black… excellent. Hats that haven’t changed once over the years of incredible history, awesome. No names on the back of home jerseys, just plain cool. Giants fans are some of the coolest peeps on the planet as well. They definitely know their baseball, and their team too. So much for needing names on a jersey. Go Giants!

Classic and clean, fans of Major League Baseball around the globe agree. The Giant’s duds are the bomb. Not to offset the impressive talent of

For 35 years the Padres were banished to the outskirts of San Diego, playing in a stadium built for football. That all changed in 2004, when San Diego opened a downtown ballpark. Petco Park was built at a cost of $456.8 million on 18 acres of land in the heart of downtown San Diego. Very few ballparks in the Major Leagues can boast of such a prime location, as Petco Park was beautifully woven into the fabric of the city and is surrounded by the skyscrapers of the San Diego skyline. Go if you get the chance.

Here are just a few reasons why you should honor and respect, if not love and adore, the Oakland Athletics. Here goes…. (Big Breath) They wear Green and Gold. They absolutely dominate Twitter. The movie Money Ball ruled. They have a player named Coco Crisp, and he’s good. The team’s home field advantage is of miracles and magic. Racing Rickey Henderson. Their defense is so good it’s just ridiculous. Tom Hanks loves the A’s. The best mustache history and pig roasts in all of sports. Stomper the Elephant. Baseball’s angriest Aussie. The best player you’ve never heard of. The list goes on, truly it does. You can’t go wrong with Oakland. Go A’s!
