the gaps: purchasing and maintaining musical instruments, purchasing music and drama rights for student performances, transportation to perform in competitions, supplies for art courses and so much more. WHEN OUR KIDS NEED HELP – MOUNTAINS ARE EASILY MOVED The Mesa Chamber of Commerce Business In Education Foundation has made the ever so important decision to create a new charitable fund through their 501C3. It has been named The Mesa Public Schools Creative and Performing Arts Fund. The Chamber Foundation has unanimously agreed to work with local business to create and foster projects which raise awareness and financial support to fill in the gaps in the budget of shrinking arts programs - on an ongoing basis. In short, the project has taken off like a rocket to the moon. Broadway Palm Owner and Executive Producer Will Prather has offered to host a Festival For Creative Arts to raise awareness and launch this new fund raising program - and within just a few days over two dozen businesses have stepped up to the plate to donate their time, talents, goods and services for this important and much needed mission. Dozens of businesses have joined together to celebrate and support creativity in our public schools. To date, this ambitious and compassionate community service partnership has raised several thousand dollars. The amount of money raised increases exponentially day by day…and it’s just getting started. Every penny from the sale of food at the festival, the revenue from games, the sale of arts and crafts, the Chinese auction …even the registration fees for vendor booths will go directly to the Mesa Public Schools Creative and Performing Arts Fund. Become a part of the solution. Donate to the Mesa Public Schools Creative and Performing Arts Fund by contacting the Mesa Chamber of Commerce (480969-1307)

The Arizona Theatre Company’s production of the “The Mystery of Irma Vep” plays at the Herberger Theater Center through May 29th. The Charles Ludlam play stars the talented quick changes and even quicker wits of Bob Sorenson and Oliver Wadsworth who trade humorous exchanges as the two men play multiple roles, both male and female. The actors trade costumes with amazing speed as they exit and reenter the sets with new clothes, new hair and new accents. The schizophrenic performances are flawlessly carried out and the speed at which they happen sends the audience into riotous laughter.

The Mystery of Irma Vep

But underneath the comedy is a twisted plot that is just as hard to unravel as the cryptic identity of Irma Vep herself. The show is a fun, supercollider of Shakespeare meets Monty Python, with lots of creepy, gothic creatures that would make Vincent Price proud. Of course the show is enhanced by the Herberger Theater’s old world charm and great views from every seat. We can’t tell you how it ends (after all, we are talking “mystery” here), but we can tell you that if an enjoyable night of theatre with very talented actors, amazing comedic timing, and a few monsters sounds like fun, then get a couple tickets while you still can and schlepp on down and enjoy Irma Vep. Director Jodie Foster talks shooting ‘The Beaver’ Interview by Stan Robinson After screening ‘The Beaver’, directed by Two time Oscar® winner Jodie Foster who

also stars, as ‘The Beaver’ faded to black, I had the same instinctual reaction for it as I had for ‘The King’s Speech’ and director Tom Hooper’, thinking “What a powerful piece of filmmaking”, took a deep breath and thought, I have to have a conversation with Jodie Foster. On a firm path of directing, her previous directorial projects include ‘Little Man Tate’ (1991) and ‘Home for the Holidays’ (1995), I asked Jodie if she found ‘The Beaver’ or if it found her… Jodie: “Well, it was kind of a combination of them both, it had been around for a while, it was on the ‘black list’ which is the 100 best unproduced screenplays and I read that and said ‘wow’ this is amazing, but an agent said yea but another director is involved. I said; well, if anything ever happens to that involvement just call me up. It didn’t and it moved on to me!” Stan: Now that the screenplay was yours, the next logical step would be to get actors attached to it, Jodie: “That’s pretty much it, and I brought Mel Gibson on, and based on that we went to look for a distributor. That was also challenging, it’s a difficult movie and we knew we wanted to make it independently. There were a lot of reasons why and the studios were certainly weary - and also the other independents were weary, and Summit Entertainment came

Life inspires filmmaker Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Blue Valentine’ Interview by Joseph J. Airdo Before “Blue Valentine” was released into theaters last year, snagging countless awards and spots on “best of the year” lists along the way, writer/director Derek Cianfrance spent 12 years trying to make the film. “Whenever you are dreaming about something, imagining something or creating something, I think you are always walking a fine line between being delusional and being a realist,” Cianfrance explains. “This movie was kind of like the rock I was pushing up a hill. It is nice to get it done and to have it received the way it was. It has kind of validated my sanity.” In “Blue Valentine,” which arrived last week on DVD, a married couple finds that they are powerless to stop the downward spiral of their marriage. Cianfrance lists the heavier-than-normal weight of the screenplay and star Michelle Williams’ less-than-financeable name – until recently – among the reasons it took so long for the movie to finally come to fruition. “But, at the very end, maybe I wasn’t quite ready to make it,” Cianfrance admits. “The film was inspired by other movies. Twelve years ago, I wasn’t married. I have had kids, I have made a handful of documentaries – 12 years later the film has become inspired by life. I think that is what was necessary to make the film what it is.”

forward and were so supportive. I think they really ‘got’ what the film was about and really embraced the vision of the movie, and were able to ‘hop on’ right away!”

‘Super’

Following a failed suicide attempt, a deeply depressed toy executive (Mel Gibson) communicates through a beaver puppet and tries to get his life back on track. Also starring Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 91 minutes)

After his wife (Liv Tyler) falls under the influence of a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), an everyday guy (Rainn Wilson) transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills. Also starring Ellen Page. Screening 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at Madcap Theaters. (NR – 96 minutes)

Joseph: “Jodie Foster’s first directorial effort in more than 15 years, is a nice blend of sincerity and eccentricity but you cannot shake the feeling that she played it a bit too safe. As a result, ‘The Beaver’ comes across as more awkward than anything. It is not batty enough to be funny nor dark enough to be interesting. Instead, the movie settles in as a bland drama with a moderately provocative premise.” Grade: C Stan: “The Beaver’ presents a well rounded view of the effects on a family when one member is in extreme mental crises. With a comedic tone at the on-set, under the skillful guiding of director Jody Foster, the dramatic impact is steadily revealed. And, Mel Gibson is in top form as he delivers two on-screen character personalities: Walter the husband sliding into an uncontrollable dangerous depression and the beaver puppet’s personality that is completely rational and stable, presenting a stark view of a mind in turmoil.” Grade: B

‘Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen’ Seven years after his apparent death, Chen Zhen (Yen Donnie) infiltrates the mob after they form an alliance with the Japanese. Disguising himself as a caped fighter by night, Chen intends to take out everyone involved. In Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 105 minutes) Joseph: “‘Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen’ is a convoluted mess, but it is a viscerally enthralling convoluted mess at that. Director Lau Wai-keung, who has a history in cinematography and also serves that role here, injects the martial arts extravaganza with a gorgeous cinematic style that overshadows Gordan Chan’s somewhat sloppy screenplay. Simply said, there is some kick to this flick.” Grade: C

English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (NR – 139 minutes)

Joseph: “Filmmaker James Gunn’s ‘Super’ is being touted as an indie ‘Kick-Ass.’ And that comparison seems appropriate enough, although ‘Super’ is far more eccentric (which is saying an awful lot considering ‘Kick-Ass’s’ complete and utter disregard for political-correctness). It is an audacious action comedy with an odd fascination for graphic violence - a perfectly sick and twisted superhero fairy tale.” Grade: B

Now Playing! The following new releases were not screened in time for AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s press deadline. Read Joseph J. Airdo, Randy Montgomery and Stan Robinson’s full reviews exclusively online at Examiner.com, AZWeeklyMagazine.com and ScreenScene.org, respectively. ‘Nine Nation Animation Festival’ The festival presents a selection of recent award-winning animated short films from countries worldwide and the world’s most renowned festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, and Annecy. Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ. (82 Minutes) ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter (Penelope Cruz) are after it too. (PG-13 – 136 minutes) ‘Poetry’ A sixty-something woman (Yun Jeong-hie) faced with the discovery of a heinous family crime and in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease finds strength and purpose when she enrolls in a poetry class. In Korean with

South Mountain’s 1st Traditional Italian Restaurant

‘The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee Scratch Perry’ A documentary of one of the most fascinating and influential artists of our times. Stock footage, photographs, concert video, audio clips, music video clips both old and new, and an exclusive, candid interview at his home in Switzerland. Filmed in Jamaica, London, Switzerland, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Colorado. Playing exclusively at the Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ. (95 minutes)

Fearcon Invades MADCAP By Randy Montgomery Frightening things will be happening at MADCAP Theaters on Mill Avenue. Phoenix Fearcon IV takes over the venue for a day of film screenings, guest appearances, costume contests, zombie fashion shows and more. The festival promises to deliver “the best horror cinema from around the world” and will include several premieres, including ‘Eaters’, an Italian flick set in a world plagued by “the Great Epidemic” and governed by the living dead. Described as “in part a marvelous throwback to the classic Italian zombie films of the 80′s, influenced by the likes of Zombieland and possesses a distinctly cynical 21st-century edge all its own.” In attendance will be scream queen Tiffany Shepis, star of many low-budget horror films. Saturday, May 21 from 12:00 p.m. to Midnight.

A New Place to See “Indies” By Randy Montgomery UltraStar Cinemas UltraLuxe location at the Scottsdale Pavilions (Loop 101 and Indian Bend) opened earlier this year and features amenities which include 21+ auditoriums, in-seat food service, D-Box Motion Code technology and more. BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Every day nearly 20 banks are robbed around the world. The average take is $2,500. Your body is creating and killing 15 million red blood cells per second. FRANCESCA WOLFSOHN INVESTMENT ADVISOR AZ 480~822~8176 NY 516~395~3299 Economists Locate End of Recession,

The headline read. It turns out the worst economic crash since the Great Depression actually ended some fifteen months before, although you could be forgiven for missing it, as you likely were out selling your blood. So I guess we are all okay. When this recession began, as an Investment Advisor who prefers to stick with Insured Municipal Bonds I was very angry at what’s become of our financial structure, and hopeful that this catastrophic unbalance was what we needed to set us on a wiser path both financially and socially. It felt like something structural had broken. That the “proverbial” rug was pulled out from under us. That it was permanent and would require serious attention by serious people. I was certain that we were experiencing something historic and profound. The world as we knew it would be changed forever… (optimistically hoping for the better.)

A Boeing 747 airliner holds 57,285 gallons of fuel!

In Tokyo, a bicycle is faster than a car for most trips of less than 50 minutes.

There is one slot machine in Las Vegas for every eight inhabitants.

At the time, so many of my friends, clients and associates were out of work, my house had lost a third of its value, and I was trying to help people I knew figure out what to do about medical insurance.

Two years later, we are told the recession is over and it’s a new world. Many of my friends are still out of work, my house is still worth two-thirds what it was and I’m still trying to help people figure out what to do about medical insurance. Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy those economists finally found the end of the recession.

Remember in history class, how periods of American trial were followed by seismic sociological change? The Depression led to government regulation and the beginnings of a social safety net; World War II led to the baby boom, the beginning of racial integration and a burgeoning middle class. So what did we get for our collective trouble over the last few years?

One out of every 230 cars made in the U.S. in 2010 was reported stolen.

That’s easy. We went to the recession and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.

The same week that economists found the end of the recession, another news story was in print. During the last year, 3.8 million Americans (or roughly ... Oregon) slipped below poverty. Now, 42 million people, or one in seven Americans, lives in poverty (for a family of four this means living on $22,000 a year. This represents the largest percentage increase in that number since 1959 This could end up being the first recession in history in which the gap between rich and poor actually gets bigger.

The Silver Lining? So many of us did see the error of our ways (and others) and there are many more people out there living better, greener, more socially responsible lives. For what we cannot control steer as clear as you can.

nd

Is that a sparkle in his eye or is he just confused? With his innocence and friendly demeanor, Mitch quickly engages the audience and then catches them off guard with his mixture of mischievous dialog and off color comments. While laughing at observations only Mitch can get away with, we are left wondering if he truly understands what he just said. We never really know.

about Mitch’s rise to stardom, “It’s just a matter of time.” Well his time has come. The number one requested comedian on Satellite Radio, Mitch has appeared numerous times on both the “Late Show with David Letterman” and the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. In 2006 he took home honors as “Best Comedian” at the prestigious HBO Aspen Comedy Festival and in April of 2007 his half hour stand up special debuted on Comedy Central and was ranked #6 in the 2008 Standup Showdown. Mitch’s’ new Comedy Central One Hour Special “Mitch Fatel Is Magical” debuted in September 2009. Catch this innovative comedian, clearly about to make the jump to bona fide Superstar, while you still can.

From his many appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Late Show with David Letterman, to his weekly picks segment on the FOX NFL pregame show with Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson, comedian/actor/

impressionist Frank Caliendo has been all over Television the past few years. (Last year he even performed in front of the Vice President of the United States broadcast on C-SPAN). Known for “dead on” impressions of famous actors (like Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Robert DeNiro), politicians (George W. Bush, Bill Clinton) and broadcasters (John Madden, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Jim Rome), Frank, a 7 year veteran of television sketch comedy (MadTV, Hype) has his own show “Frank TV” on the TBS network. On the Stage, Frank’s high energy act is a blend of observations, impressions, characters and anecdotal stories that build to a frenetic pace. Once described by the “Hollywood Reporter” as “a combination of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey” Frank is one comedian that should not be missed. Other places you might have seen Frank: “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson”, “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, “Conan O’Brien”, “The View”, “Last Call with Carson Daly”, Superbowl XXXIX, “Comedy Central Presents Frank Caliendo”, “The Best Damn Sports show Period”, and “Mike and Mike” on ESPN 2.

Mitch has been showcasing his talent to rave reviews for the past 15 years. Since then both appreciative audiences and comedy executives have made the same observation

FOODCHANNEL.COM RELEASES ETIQUETTE GUIDE FOR FOOD BLOGGERS

Think Steak.

Ten tips for writing about food in the digital age

(Or Ribs, Chicken, Seafood & Cocktails)

The Food Channel has announced its new “Food Blogger’s Etiquette Guide” eBook. Readers may view the guide for free on The Food Channel website, or download for $0.99 on Amazon Kindle devices or as a PDF on The Food Channel online store. “It actually started when I read a comment attributed to noted Chef Rick Bayless,” said Kay Logsdon, editor in chief of The Food Channel. “He suggested that a blogger’s etiquette book might be in order, and we agreed. As fun and interesting as food blogging is, the goal is to make sure that the dining experience isn’t interrupted by the blogging experience.”

(480) 429-9544

2122 N. Scottsdale Rd. Scottsdale

The booklet is made up of 10 short tips written by Logsdon and illustrated with photography taken by David Nehmer, The Food Channel ’s Creative Director. “We travel and eat at a lot of great restaurants in search of content for our restaurant database,” said Logsdon. “Along the way, David has taken some beautiful photos inside the restaurants, and this was a great opportunity to show how well it can be done.” The 10 rules of food blogging are: 1. Be professional, even if your blog is a hobby. 2. Photos are OK—in fact, they are a compliment to the chef. However, flash photos are a distraction to other diners. Do not use a flash. 3. Respect privacy. Do not take photos of other diners. 4. Make sure your photos will do proper justice to the restaurant and its food. 5. What applies to photos should also apply to what you write—especially that part about “respect privacy.” Don’t quote from private conversations or from interviews with the staff—or even the restaurant owner or chef—unless you have identified yourself as a blogger and they are OK with being quoted. 6. Use good judgment when judging. In other words, if you are going to criticize, be sure you know what you are talking about. 7. Be polite. Again, blogging is not the same as being a food critic, no matter how much social media has changed the game. 8. Link to the restaurant’s website. Give your reader the chance to learn more about the restaurant and to peruse the menu a little further. 9. Let the restaurant know you’ve written a blog. 10. Don’t let note taking, photo taking, or observations hinder your enjoyment of the meal or the atmosphere.

BEER! AMERI“CAN” CANNED CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL May 21, 2011 at Historic Downtown Chandler’s AJ Chandler Park We received a press release a little over a month ago and decided to hang on to it until we got closer to the event. Well, the event is this Saturday and it is time to let you all in on it, if you haven’t already heard. Whole Foods market will be the Presenting Sponsor of the inaugural Ameri“CAN” Canned Craft Beer Festival, hosted by SanTan Brewing Company. The Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011, which will conclude American Craft Beer Week. More than 40 local and national breweries will participate, and more than 3,000 craft beer aficionados are expected to attend. The event runs from 2 pm through 6 pm in Historic Downtown Chandler, AJ Chandler Park (West) at 3 S San Marcos Place.

This festival of canned beers will celebrate the craft beer movement with an awards ceremony, live entertainment, food, Beer Olympics, and a Beer Science Garden, where companies such as CASK, Hop May 19th, 2011 - May 25th, 2011

Union, Ball, Breiss and others will showcase the making of canned beer. Once shunned for imparting a metallic taste to beer, canned beer is making a comeback in the craft beer world. Even larger breweries have re-embraced the practice as it really is the best way to

transport beer. “This is a celebration of the canned craft beer revolution,” said Anthony Canecchia, owner and head brew master of SanTan Brewing Company. “We believe that the can is the superior package for craft beer and it is our intention to continue educating craft beer drinkers of this fact.”

An unprecedented lineup of national and local breweries will participate (either in person or through World Class Beverages) including 21st Amendment Brewing (CA), Anderson Valley Brewing Company (CA), Avery Brewing Company (CO), Baxter (ME),

Big Sky Brewing Company (MT), Blue Moon Brewing Company (CO), Bohemian (UT), Breckenridge Brewing (CO), Buckbean (NV), Caldera (OR), Crispin Cider (MN), Grand Canyon Brewing (AZ), Leinenkugel’s (WI), Mammoth (CA), Mudshark Brewing (AZ), New Belgium Brewing Company (CO), SanTan Brewing Company

(AZ), SKA Brewing Company (CO), Tailgate Brewing (CA) and Tallgrass Brewing (KS) – with many more to be announced in the coming weeks. The championship portion of the festival will include Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded in nine categories: IPA; American Pale Ale; English Pale Ale; Wheat Beers; Stouts and Porters; Ambers and Browns; Golds, Blondes, Pilsners and Light Lagers; Fruit; and Specialty Beer. A Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) will promote beer literacy and the appreciation of real beer, and to recognize beer tasting and evaluation skills. Tickets for the Ameri”CAN” Beer Festival are $35 presale or $45 day-of-event. Ticket includes entry into the festival with collectible 4 oz. sample can, which can be used to sample the beers from participating breweries. VIP tickets are $100 presale or $125 day-of-event, and include general entry with a 4 oz. souvenir can, VIP lanyard for all access and exclusive entry into VIP Beer Garden, unlimited catered food and treats, Continued on page 30...

BING

Ruben S: I'm the host of the event, so I'm the one on the mic helping the bingo callers out and interacting with the crowd! We have dance contests and stuff that are a lot of fun! I also have a co-host Tyler Martinez who helps me organize giveaways and the other festivities!

Interview By: Yaya Martinez

Phoenix Arizona has been the stomping grounds for both of you in radio for quite some time now, but for those that don't know, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Radio on 101.1 FM The Beat on Fridays where I get to keep it real, son! In addition, I'm both, a Bum Squad DJ, and a DJ Vatican member. I DJ the Urban AZ concerts here in the valley too, and I spin at Koi inside Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas every other Sunday. Plus, on top of Lunar Bingo, I'm also contracted to handle all the launch parties for two of my corporate sponsors; Precious Vodka and Head Trip Headphones. Sometimes, I even sleep! Lunar Bingo sounds like a pretty good time but what exactly is it?

Ruben S: Well I've been working in radio here in the valley since the late 90's! I've worked at a number of stations with Krazy Kid, and now I'm doing my solo thing as the afternoon jock on Mega 104.3 FM and the night jock on 101.1 FM The Beat! I also have a recording studio and work with a number of artists here in the valley!

40

Ramses Ja: I host the night slot on Mega 104.3 FM from 6-10pm weekdays with my buttery-smooth voice, and I host R.E.D.Y. Set

Ruben S: Lunar Bingo is a crazy take on the game of bingo! It's basically like a huge night club where people are making money instead of spending it! We give away iPads and PS3s and stuff like that, plus we throw prizes out to the crowd! They go crazy for it! Ramses Ja: Yeah, I've seen it get pretty wild, but I guess that's expected any time you get 1500 people in a room at the same time! People go crazy

over the prizes and the cash giveaways! It's a trip to see how so many people look forward to it on Facebook and Twitter! It's a lot of fun! You guys are pretty amazing on the solo tip, but as a dynamic duo what will people see from YOU at lunar bingo? Ramses Ja: Well, I handle the music... I spin everything from hip-hop, to old school, to top 40, and even some dance music! I Try to match the theme of the night and hit the requests. I make sure that everybody has a good time... especially the girls!

Thank you gentlemen for your time! Please let readers know how they can get ahold of you? Ruben S: You can hit me at facebook.com/azradioboi or twitter.com/azradioboi Ramses Ja: Mine are pretty easy! ramsesja.com, twitter.com/ramsesja, facebook.com/ramsesja ...basically, anything-dotcom-slash-ramsesja! Project Ethos When most outsiders think of Phoenix, they don’t necessarily think of avantgarde fashion or even a distinct musical genre popularly played and proudly enjoyed amongst us Phoenicians. You have California with their alternative rock and rap flavors dripping from their ocean soaked hair. In New York, you see Yanks wearing layers of deliciously designed garb and being versed in the city’s incredible musical history. Scantily-dressed Miami has that Latin spice and New Orleans has colorful jazz. What are we known for? Wearing flip flops? Maybe. Vitamin Watersponsored “Project Ethos” at Axis Radius hopes to highlight the spirit and flavor of our desert culture. Local fashion designers, musicians and artists will exhibit their works in an upscale environment on Friday. Expect a runway, paintings and music the models will be dancing to as they wear designs inspired by a Vitamin Water flavor. Guests will be asked to vote for the best flavor-inspired garments via live text and can celebrate the winner and his or her $3000.00 victory afterwards when guest DJs will be spinning. Dance, soak in, and be amazed with the ethos of Arizona because there’s flavor here too. 5/20 9:00pm2:00am @ Axis Radius Scottsdale. $10 general admission. $30 VIP. Ages 21+. www.projectethos.com
