The Arizona Theatre Company’s production of the “The Mystery of Irma Vep” plays at the Herberger Theater Center through May 29th. But underneath the comedy is a twisted plot that is just as hard to unravel as the cryptic identity of Irma Vep herself. The show is a fun, supercollider of Shakespeare meets Monty Python, with lots of creepy, gothic creatures that would make Vincent Price proud. also stars, as ‘The Beaver’ faded to black, I had the same instinctual reaction for it as I had for ‘The King’s Speech’ and director Tom Hooper’, thinking “What a powerful piece of filmmaking”, took a deep breath and thought, I have to have a conversation with Jodie Foster. On a firm path of directing, her previous directorial projects include ‘Little Man Tate’ (1991) and ‘Home for the Holidays’ (1995), I asked Jodie if she found ‘The Beaver’ or if it found her… Jodie: “Well, it was kind of a combination of them both, it had been around for a while, it was on the ‘black list’ which is the 100 best unproduced screenplays and I read that and said ‘wow’ this is amazing, but an agent said yea but another director is involved. I said; well, if anything ever happens to that involvement just call me up. It didn’t and it moved on to me!” Stan: Now that the screenplay was yours, the next logical step would be to get actors attached to it, Jodie: “That’s pretty much it, and I brought Mel Gibson on, and based on that we went to look for a distributor. That was also challenging, it’s a difficult movie and we knew we wanted to make it independently. Life inspires filmmaker Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Blue Valentine’ Interview by Joseph J. Airdo Before “Blue Valentine” was released into theaters last year, snagging countless awards and spots on “best of the year” lists along the way, writer/director Derek Cianfrance spent 12 years trying to make the film. “Whenever you are dreaming about something, imagining something or creating something, I think you are always walking a fine line between being delusional and being a realist,” Cianfrance explains. “This movie was kind of like the rock I was pushing up a hill. It is nice to get it done and to have it received the way it was. It has kind of validated my sanity.” In “Blue Valentine,” which arrived last week on DVD, a married couple finds that they are powerless to stop the downward spiral of their marriage. Cianfrance lists the heavier-than-normal weight of the screenplay and star Michelle Williams’ less-than-financeable name – until recently – among the reasons it took so long for the movie to finally come to fruition. “But, at the very end, maybe I wasn’t quite ready to make it,” Cianfrance admits. “The film was inspired by other movies. Twelve years ago, I wasn’t married. I have had kids, I have made a handful of documentaries – 12 years later the film has become inspired by life. I think that is what was necessary to make the film what it is.”

Joseph: “Jodie Foster’s first directorial effort in more than 15 years, is a nice blend of sincerity and eccentricity but you cannot shake the feeling that she played it a bit too safe. As a result, ‘The Beaver’ comes across as more awkward than anything. It is not batty enough to be funny nor dark enough to be interesting. Instead, the movie settles in as a bland drama with a moderately provocative premise.” Grade: C Stan: “The Beaver’ presents a well rounded view of the effects on a family when one member is in extreme mental crises. With a comedic tone at the on-set, under the skillful guiding of director Jody Foster, the dramatic impact is steadily revealed. And, Mel Gibson is in top form as he delivers two on-screen character personalities: Walter the husband sliding into an uncontrollable dangerous depression and the beaver puppet’s personality that is completely rational and stable, presenting a stark view of a mind in turmoil.” Grade: B

‘Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen’ Seven years after his apparent death, Chen Zhen (Yen Donnie) infiltrates the mob after they form an alliance with the Japanese. Disguising himself as a caped fighter by night, Chen intends to take out everyone involved. In Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (R – 105 minutes) Joseph: “‘Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen’ is a convoluted mess, but it is a viscerally enthralling convoluted mess at that. Director Lau Wai-keung, who has a history in cinematography and also serves that role here, injects the martial arts extravaganza with a gorgeous cinematic style that overshadows Gordan Chan’s somewhat sloppy screenplay. Simply said, there is some kick to this flick.” Grade: C

Joseph: “Filmmaker James Gunn’s ‘Super’ is being touted as an indie ‘Kick-Ass.’ And that comparison seems appropriate enough, although ‘Super’ is far more eccentric (which is saying an awful lot considering ‘Kick-Ass’s’ complete and utter disregard for political-correctness). It is an audacious action comedy with an odd fascination for graphic violence - a perfectly sick and twisted superhero fairy tale.” Grade: B

The headline read. It turns out the worst economic crash since the Great Depression actually ended some fifteen months before, although you could be forgiven for missing it, as you likely were out selling your blood. So I guess we are all okay. When this recession began, as an Investment Advisor who prefers to stick with Insured Municipal Bonds I was very angry at what’s become of our financial structure, and hopeful that this catastrophic unbalance was what we needed to set us on a wiser path both financially and socially. It felt like something structural had broken. That the “proverbial” rug was pulled out from under us. That it was permanent and would require serious attention by serious people. I was certain that we were experiencing something historic and profound. The world as we knew it would be changed forever… (optimistically hoping for the better.)

Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy those economists finally found the end of the recession.

Remember in history class, how periods of American trial were followed by seismic sociological change? The Depression led to government regulation and the beginnings of a social safety net; World War II led to the baby boom, the beginning of racial integration and a burgeoning middle class. So what did we get for our collective trouble over the last few years?

One out of every 230 cars made in the U.S. in 2010 was reported stolen.

That’s easy. We went to the recession and all we got was this lousy T-shirt.

The same week that economists found the end of the recession, another news story was in print. During the last year, 3.8 million Americans (or roughly ... Oregon) slipped below poverty. Now, 42 million people, or one in seven Americans, lives in poverty (for a family of four this means living on $22,000 a year. This represents the largest percentage increase in that number since 1959 This could end up being the first recession in history in which the gap between rich and poor actually gets bigger.

The Silver Lining? So many of us did see the error of our ways (and others) and there are many more people out there living better, greener, more socially responsible lives. For what we cannot control steer as clear as you can.

Readers may view the guide for free on The Food Channel website, or download for $0.99 on Amazon Kindle devices or as a PDF on The Food Channel online store. “It actually started when I read a comment attributed to noted Chef Rick Bayless,” said Kay Logsdon, editor in chief of The Food Channel. “He suggested that a blogger’s etiquette book might be in order, and we agreed. As fun and interesting as food blogging is, the goal is to make sure that the dining experience isn’t interrupted by the blogging experience.”

The booklet is made up of 10 short tips written by Logsdon and illustrated with photography taken by David Nehmer, The Food Channel ’s Creative Director. “We travel and eat at a lot of great restaurants in search of content for our restaurant database,” said Logsdon. “Along the way, David has taken some beautiful photos inside the restaurants, and this was a great opportunity to show how well it can be done.” The 10 rules of food blogging are: 1. Be professional, even if your blog is a hobby. 2. Photos are OK—in fact, they are a compliment to the chef. However, flash photos are a distraction to other diners. Do not use a flash. 3. Respect privacy. Do not take photos of other diners. 4. Make sure your photos will do proper justice to the restaurant and its food. 5. What applies to photos should also apply to what you write—especially that part about “respect privacy.” Don’t quote from private conversations or from interviews with the staff—or even the restaurant owner or chef—unless you have identified yourself as a blogger and they are OK with being quoted. 6. Use good judgment when judging. In other words, if you are going to criticize, be sure you know what you are talking about. 7. Be polite. Again, blogging is not the same as being a food critic, no matter how much social media has changed the game. 8. Link to the restaurant’s website. Give your reader the chance to learn more about the restaurant and to peruse the menu a little further. 9. Let the restaurant know you’ve written a blog. 10. Don’t let note taking, photo taking, or observations hinder your enjoyment of the meal or the atmosphere.

AMERI“CAN” CANNED CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL May 21, 2011 at Historic Downtown Chandler’s AJ Chandler Park We received a press release a little over a month ago and decided to hang on to it until we got closer to the event. Well, the event is this Saturday and it is time to let you all in on it, if you haven’t already heard. Whole Foods market will be the Presenting Sponsor of the inaugural Ameri“CAN” Canned Craft Beer Festival, hosted by SanTan Brewing Company. The Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011, which will conclude American Craft Beer Week. More than 40 local and national breweries will participate, and more than 3,000 craft beer aficionados are expected to attend. The event runs from 2 pm through 6 pm in Historic Downtown Chandler, AJ Chandler Park (West) at 3 S San Marcos Place.

Phoenix Arizona has been the stomping grounds for both of you in radio for quite some time now, but for those that don't know, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Radio on 101.1 FM The Beat on Fridays where I get to keep it real, son! In addition, I'm both, a Bum Squad DJ, and a DJ Vatican member. I DJ the Urban AZ concerts here in the valley too, and I spin at Koi inside Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas every other Sunday. Plus, on top of Lunar Bingo, I'm also contracted to handle all the launch parties for two of my corporate sponsors; Precious Vodka and Head Trip Headphones. Sometimes, I even sleep! Lunar Bingo sounds like a pretty good time but what exactly is it?

Ruben S: Well I've been working in radio here in the valley since the late 90's! I've worked at a number of stations with Krazy Kid, and now I'm doing my solo thing as the afternoon jock on Mega 104.3 FM and the night jock on 101.1 FM The Beat! I also have a recording studio and work with a number of artists here in the valley!

Ramses Ja: I host the night slot on Mega 104.3 FM from 6-10pm weekdays with my buttery-smooth voice, and I host R.E.D.Y. Set

Ruben S: Lunar Bingo is a crazy take on the game of bingo! It's basically like a huge night club where people are making money instead of spending it!
