Footloose Theater Works Thursday 7:00pm Friday and Saturday 7:00pm Saturday and Sunday 1:30pm Through March 13 One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth that he cannot command in his own home. To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

Andy Warhol: Good for the Jews? Actors Theatre Thursday 7:00pm Friday and Saturday 8:00pm Sunday 2:00pm Through March 20 In 1980, Andy Warhol - he of the fifteen minutes of fame and the giant soup cans - opened an exhibit of 10 silk-screen portraits of famous Jews. They were not, shall people say, well received. They were the target of scorn by many art critics and praise by the public who understood and appreciated them. Thirty-one years later, comic storyteller Josh Kornbluth takes up the issue of the once controversial exhibit and what it means - to him personally and to a community of art lovers at large and most importantly asks you...to judge for yourself.

Tempe Little Theatre Proudly Presents the Arizona Premiere of the Tony Award-Winning Musical Grey Gardens This wonderfully quirky show is based on the highly acclaimed, cult classic 1975 documentary of the same name. Grey Gardens is the story of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie who just so happen to be the aunt and cousin of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The musical opens in1941, when Edith and Edie were the toast of high society. They are living in a beautiful twenty-eight room mansion right off the beach in East Hampton named Grey Gardens. Unfortunately, due to a series of events throughout the course of a particular evening, the opinion of Edith and Edie with the town aristocrats begins to crumble. Act two takes place almost thirty years later in 1973. Our once polished and stunning Edith and Edie have become reclusive, eccentric, and penniless women. Their once gorgeous home has become a sprawling, dilapidated eyesore that is overrun with cats, raccoons, and fleas. And yet through it all these women have become unique individuals, creating daily bits of joy and happiness from their memories and mutual admiration. This story is about the difficulty these women have in separating the past from the present and the bond they have formed from spending so many winters in a summer town. Grey Gardens has a book by Pulitzer Prize Winner Doug Wright, Lyrics by Michael Korie and Music by Scott Frankel. When the musical opened on Broadway, it was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences. Time Magazine named it the number on show of 2006. The musical played over 300 performances on Broadway and won three Tony Awards. Grey Gardens was also recently adapted into an award winning non-musical drama for HBO featuring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore.

Devoured Phoenix Art Museum Saturday-Sunday 11:00am-4:00pm March 12-March 13 This independently edible award-winning culinary event is a luscious showcase of Arizona’s finest independent restaurants, chefs, wineries, and industry purveyors in a distinctly Phoenix setting. Hosted by Phoenix Art Museum, benefiting both Local First Arizona and Phoenix Art Museum, and produced by R Entertainment Co., Devoured’s mission serves to underscore metro Phoenix as a fabulous culinary destination.

Silver Screen Scoop! By Joseph J. Airdo Actor Mark Wahlberg has expressed an interest in producing a follow-up to “The Fighter,” thus continuing the story of boxer Mickey Ward. Meanwhile, Fox 2000 has started development on “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters,” the second novel in Rick Riordan’s fantasy franchise. Finally, filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly are considering writing and directing a sequel to their 1994 comedy “Dumb and Dumber,” with original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising their roles. on a group of 20-something New Yorkers struggling to figure out themselves, their lives and their loves. Also starring Malin Akerman, Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, Pablo Schreiber and Tony Hale. (R – 100 minutes) The following quotes were pulled from reviews written by AZ Weekly’s Film! contributors to present readers with a wider perspective about this new release. Read Stan Robinson’s and Joseph J. Airdo’s full reviews exclusively online. Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com): “Having already convinced this critic to reserve a place for it on his list of Favorite Flicks of 2011, ‘happythankyoumoreplease’ is a terrifically therapeutic piece of generational cinema. Josh Radnor’s dialogue is as clever as it is poignant while his visual style shows a profound love for this ensemble cast of sympathetic characters and the enormously engaging story that is collectively formulated from their independently meaningful memoirs.” Grade: A Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org): “With a slow start that seemed to be the usual comedic look at social issues, ‘happythankyoumoreplease’ morphs into a very insightful cameo view of each of the primary characters. Quite a worthy accomplishment for writer, director Josh Radnor who also stars.” Grade: B

The largest movie promotion deal to date is the $2 billion agreement between George Lucas, the director of the “Star Wars” trilogy, and Pepsi for exclusive worldwide use of the film’s characters.

Review by Randy Montgomery When Milo (voiced by Seth Green) says he wishes his mom (Joan Cusack) would disappear, she really does. Actually, she gets abducted by Martians. Disney’s Mars Needs Moms is an entertaining animated sci-fi action comedy. It’s not as cute as Wall-E, but is fun enough to hold the attention of little ones and amuse adults. Producer Robert Zemeckis utilizes the technology behind A Christmas Carol and Polar Express. Stay through the credits to see behind the scenes footage. Grade: A-

that seemed to have no effect, Mark creates his own way of coping with his trauma, he builds ‘Marwencol’, a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard. In his town he incorporates friends, relatives, and neighbors with dolls and toy replicas for his town, where he controls and lives out his fantasy stories. ‘Marwencol’ is a very moving film and a testament to the spirit of Mark Hogancamp to live life on his terms in spite of the ‘cards’ life has dealt him in his later years. Directed by Jeff Malmberg. The Cinema Guild release. Runtime-83 minutes. It’s now playing through Wednesday, March 16th exclusively at Film Bar in downtown Phoenix, AZ

The comedy, which follows several characters in interlocking stories taking place in 10 different bars in Los Angeles over the course of one evening, premieres Friday exclusively online in the YouTube Screening Room with sponsorship from Lexus. It marks the first time a major motion picture was produced exclusively for web distribution. “With ‘Girl Walks Into a Bar,’ the cast and crew came together to create something different – a high quality, really fun character-driven film that we could present to audiences for free using a new distribution model,” says Gutierrez, noting that the YouTube platform provides a stage to draw the largest audience possible. The ensemble cast of “Girl Walks Into a Bar” includes Zarchary Quinto, Carla Gugino, Danny DeVito, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Alexis Bledel, Robert Forster, Josh Hartnett, Gil Bellows, Rosario Dawson and Amber Valletta. There are still places in this world where the citizens are not taxed. But before you pack your bags, check the small print and the weather; environmentally, politically and socially.

Four of the richest countries in the world with some of the highest personal income, Bahrain, Brunei, Kuwait, and Qatar, have NO TAX AT ALL.

While not all of an individual’s income is taxable in Norway, some people there pay more than 100% of their taxable income. The highest recorded personal tax demand is one for $336 million

Paying Taxes is not always a bad thing. It’s all how you look at it.

If you’re paying Income Tax that means you made money last year.

Did you ever notice: When you put the 2 words ‘The’ and ‘IRS’ together it spells… ‘THEIRS...?’

In 1913 Congress passed the 16th amendment, allowing income taxes on legal income.

In 1916 Congress decided it would be a good financial decision to tax illegal income, too.

LEFT HAND BREWING COMPANY RIGHT ON TRACK Looking for an alternative to the traditional St. Patrick’s Day beers? Perhaps something rich and full-bodied, but still easy to drink? Then look no further than the Left Hand Brewing Company. Left Hand, out of Longmont Colorado has been making great beer for years, and one of their favorites has always been the Milk Stout. Milk Stouts are sweeter beers that gain some of their flavor from added lactose or milk sugar. These sugars are largely unfermentable leaving a residual sweetness. A little over

The addition of a nitrogen and CO2 blend gives the beer a creamy mouthfeel while creating a beautiful cascade effect in the glass. The creaminess actually offsets a little bit of the sweetness and provides an outstanding drinking experience.

when poured with the nitrogen blend. Look for the Milk Stout at fine bars such as Tavern on Mill, Mellow Mushroom, La Bocca Urban Pizzeria, Moon Saloon, Flanny’s, Wolfley’s, Bison Witches, Spitfire and Canteen. The Sawtooth is still very new to the market, but expect to find that in bars that serve great beer.

Now, in addition to the Milk Stout, Left Hand has literally (quite literally as the beer just arrived in town last week) just introduced the nitrogenated version of their Sawtooth ESB. Another English style beer, the ESB is lighter in color and body than is the Milk Stout, pouring a pleasant amber color that also cascades nicely

THE CICERONE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Twenty years ago, you could count the beer available at a high end restaurant on one hand. The sommelier, while a trained expert in wine, could also claim good knowledge about the meager beer choices. Times have blissfully changed such that the craft beer world is more complex and the choices are more plentiful. However, this brought up the need for a new kind of beer specialist to don the mantle of a “beer sommelier”. Except Beer

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Sommelier did not do the concept justice. The term sommelier is more commonly thought of as wine, and this concept of a beer serving expert needed to stand on its own. Enter Ray Daniels and his Cicerone program. In 2008, the Cicerone Certification Program was introduced by the Craft Beer Institute, a Chicago-based beer and brewing education organization. The program is directed by brewing industry veteran and published author, Ray Daniels. The Cicerone Certification Program (Cicerone is pronounced “sis-uh-rohn”) seeks to ensure that consumers receive the best possible beer and enjoy its flavors to the greatest extent possible. To facilitate this, those who sell and serve beer need to acquire: ●● Beer Storage, Sales and

Service

Continued on Page 17...

●● Beer Styles and Culture ●● Beer Tasting and Flavors ●● Brewing Ingredients and

Processes

●● Pairing Beer with Food

The three levels of Cicerone certification are: Certified Beer Server, Certified Cicerone, and Master Cicerone. Currently, there’s only one Master Cicerone and the Certified Beer Server count has passed 1000 last month. Anyone with passion and knowledge for beer can take the Certified Beer Sever exam online at www.cicerone.org

Cicerone is a word in old English that means “one who conducts visitors and sightseers to museums and explains matters of archaeological, antiquarian, historic or artistic interest.” But Ray Daniels decided the Cicerone title was better suited for the purposes of knowing, serving, and storing beer to improve the customer’s tasting experience. Anyone can call themselves a ‘beer sommelier’ regardless of knowledge or experience. And while some will be highly skilled, the only way to demonstrate that objectively is through independent testing of knowledge and tasting ability. The Cicerone Certification Program offers that independent assessment and certification so that industry professionals— as well as consumers—can be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers. The testing process is rigid at the Certified and Master levels, a little less so for the Certified Beer Server which is an online test. The two higher certifications require a candidate to sit for an exam. At the Certified level, the exam is about four hours and starts with a written test of approximately 150 essay and short answer questions. Topics include everything from the proper method of cleaning draft lines to hop growing countries to breaking down a food recipe in order to determine the best beer to pair with it. After the written exam comes a fairly intense sensory exam designed to measure the candidates’ ability to spot offflavors that would make a beer unacceptable to be served. Finally a demonstration is videotaped for grading. The demonstration is a hand on display of book knowledge that can be translated in to regular beer service. Are the tests difficult? In the time they have been offered, about 1500 people have passed

the Certified Beer Server, 175 the Certified Cicerone and only a small handful have achieved the Master title. The pass rate on the Certified exam is about 50 percent, less on the Master. Why does Ray Daniels get to determine the criteria for being a Cicerone? Well besides this being his concept, he may be one of the most qualified people in the world. Ray, a Chicago resident, has traveled the world judging beer, launched festivals and written four books. His book, Designing Great Beers, is a must have for anybody considering home brewing. But the brewing and hospitality industries could just as well have decided that the Cicerone program was meaningless or unnecessary. They did no such thing. Breweries and distributorships have lined up to take the exam, and restaurants, like the beerheavy and always-packed The Publican in Chicago, began mandating that front-of-house employees become certified. As craft beer has inched toward maturity — more breweries, more quality, more distribution and more sales — Daniels correctly guessed that there would be a hunger for standards in beer service, handling and presentation. “Ray had the credibility to do this,” said Paul Gatza, director of the Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association, where Daniels worked before launching the program. “He had a network of connections that knew him and

Proper service of good beer is Daniels’ goal, stated simply, “I never again want to be served a bad beer in a bar”. To that end, Daniels believes deeply in the “beer clean” glass, which must be rinsed prior to serving to remove traces of sanitizer. Many bartenders give beers “a classic German pour,”— straight down the middle, left to settle, then topped off. This is not Daniels’ pouring ideal. His oft-repeated motto is, “It takes two hands to pour a beer,” and his method is this: hold the glass at a 45 degree angle, pour along the side, then about halfway through, tilt both glass and bottle vertical. You want an inch or so of head. If you want to be a Cicerone, you’d better know that.

“The biggest problem in American drinking habits is that we don’t drink beer all week, and then we have five on Friday night,” he said. “Better we should make alcohol a part of the diet regularly and moderately, not something for bingeing.” Daniels is constantly looking to educate and build his program. After being poured a particularly bad looking beer, he will take a photo of it for teaching purposes. For example a beer with no head and small bubbles on the side of the glass will get a picture as a good lesson of what not to do. This is an indication that the glass is not “beer clean” and sadly, according to Daniels, this is how most American bars pour beer. So, what does a Cicerone need to know? Take a look at the questions below to see if you Continued on Page 20...

A Closer Look at Everything Unique In St. Patrick’s Day Tradition

heritage, mostly through his service across Ireland of the 5th century.

EMBRACED BY ALL

The city of Chicago has developed a unique tradition of coloring the downtown river water green. It started in 1962 when 100 pounds of green vegetable dye were added to its river, enough to keep it green for a week. The tradition has continued till date. Now, 40 pounds of a green food coloring keep the river green for a few hours a day.

St. Patrick’s Day or “Paddy’s Day” commemorates the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. A festive day for the Irish people, St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland and also celebrated with much enthusiasm in places such as Canada, Great Britain, Australia, the United States and New Zealand. IRELAND St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is more of a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. With grand parades, community feasts, charity show, the mass, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated and truly honored throughout Ireland. Parades, shamrocks, and green beer are provided primarily for tourists. In fact, it has turned out to be one of the most celebrated events in Ireland and a major tourist attraction. THE SAINT HIMSELF St Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland. True, he was not a born Irish. But he has become an integral part of the Irish

THE MAGIC SHAMROCK Three is Ireland’s magic number, hence the Shamrock. Crone, Mother and Virgin… Love, Valor and Wit… Faith, Hope and Charity... Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Numbers played an important role in Celtic symbolism, and Three was the most sacred and magical number. THE LEPRECHAUN The Leprechaun is an Irish fairy. He looks like a small, old man (about 2 feet tall), often dressed like a shoemaker, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. According to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and pass the time making shoes. They also possess a hidden pot of gold. Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of

his shoemaker’s hammer. If caught, he can be forced to reveal the whereabouts of his treasure, but the captor must keep their eyes on him every second. If the captor’s eyes leave the leprechaun (and he often tricks them into looking away), he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost. YOUR P’S AND Q’S In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender used to yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. From where we get “mind your own P’s and Q’s”.

Turf Irish Pub 705 N. First St. Phoenix AZ 85004 (602) 296-5043 Peoria’s Blu Agave Arizona Kitchen Goes Green (Chile) for St. Patrick’s Day Chef Charles Wade Schwerd’s Latest Restaurant Has Own Take on Irish Holiday Blu Agave Arizona Kitchen has a different take on St. Patrick’s Day green this year, with a special holiday menu that highlights the restaurant’s “green” southwestern cuisine while saving customers the green in their wallets. The Peoria restaurant will serve green Chile stew, green Chile Cheeseburgers and small green goddess salads for only $5 each. On the drink side, Irish Car Bombs will be available for $6, Irish whiskey for $5 and green beers for only $2. “We saw St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity to have some fun with the menu and offer an Arizona take on what’s considered an Irish holiday,” said Managing Partner Christina Ricke of the St. Patrick’s Day menu. Since opening in January, Blu Agave has been a runaway hit with north Peoria residents. The restaurant’s menu was crafted by Chef Charles Wade Schwerd to

reflect the flavors and tastes of the Arizona cuisine he’s enjoyed all his life. Dishes like the Argentinean Gaucho steak, with chimichurri sauce, queso fresco mashed potatoes and caramelized onions, have quickly become house favorites.

“We get rave reviews for our food on St. Patrick’s Day,” said British Open Pub owner Gregg Troilo. “When you combine the food with our drink specials and the pipe and drum band, you could close your eyes and swear you were in Ireland.”

Located in the community of Vistancia in Peoria, Blu Agave Arizona Kitchen reflects Schwerd’s culinary pedigree but without any pretension. The casual interior invites you to relax, the outside patio allows you to drink in the surrounding desert views and the private dining room and gorgeous bar fit your dining needs.

The “Bop” as regulars call it, has something for everyone. Whether it’s authentic English food like Bangers and Mash, traditional American comfort food, a massive selection of beers from around the world or simply a fun pub to watch the day’s biggest sporting events, the Bop is the spot for foodies and sports fans – especially on St. Patrick’s Day.

Schwerd, who also owns Arrowhead Grill in Glendale, has spent the past two decades carving out a reputation as one of the Valley’s finest chefs at restaurants such as Scottsdale’s Mastro’s Steakhouse, Mastro’s Ocean Club and Drinkwater’s City Hall Steakhouse as well as John Elway’s Steakhouse in Denver, Colo. Blu Agave Arizona Kitchen is located at 28615 N. El Mirage Rd. (Happy Valley and El Mirage) in the west Valley.
