They were not, shall people say, well received. They were the target of scorn by many art critics and praise by the public who understood and appreciated them. Thirty-one years later, comic storyteller Josh Kornbluth takes up the issue of the once controversial exhibit and what it means - to him personally and to a community of art lovers at large and most importantly asks you...to judge for yourself.

Tempe Little Theatre Proudly Presents the Arizona Premiere of the Tony Award-Winning Musical Grey Gardens This wonderfully quirky show is based on the highly acclaimed, cult classic 1975 documentary of the same name. Grey Gardens is the story of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie who just so happen to be the aunt and cousin of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The musical opens in1941, when Edith and Edie were the toast of high society. They are living in a beautiful twenty-eight room mansion right off the beach in East Hampton named Grey Gardens. Unfortunately, due to a series of events throughout the course of a particular evening, the opinion of Edith and Edie with the town aristocrats begins to crumble. Act two takes place almost thirty years later in 1973. Our once polished and stunning Edith and Edie have become reclusive, eccentric, and penniless women. Their once gorgeous home has become a sprawling, dilapidated eyesore that is overrun with cats, raccoons, and fleas. And yet through it all these women have become unique individuals, creating daily bits of joy and happiness from their memories and mutual admiration. This story is about the difficulty these women have in separating the past from the present and the bond they have formed from spending so many winters in a summer town. Grey Gardens has a book by Pulitzer Prize Winner Doug Wright, Lyrics by Michael Korie and Music by Scott Frankel. When the musical opened on Broadway, it was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences. Time Magazine named it the number on show of 2006. The musical played over 300 performances on Broadway and won three Tony Awards. Grey Gardens was also recently adapted into an award winning non-musical drama for HBO featuring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore.

Review by Randy Montgomery When Milo (voiced by Seth Green) says he wishes his mom (Joan Cusack) would disappear, she really does. Actually, she gets abducted by Martians. Disney’s Mars Needs Moms is an entertaining animated sci-fi action comedy. It’s not as cute as Wall-E, but is fun enough to hold the attention of little ones and amuse adults. Producer Robert Zemeckis utilizes the technology behind A Christmas Carol and Polar Express. Stay through the credits to see behind the scenes footage. Grade: A-

that seemed to have no effect, Mark creates his own way of coping with his trauma, he builds ‘Marwencol’, a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard. In his town he incorporates friends, relatives, and neighbors with dolls and toy replicas for his town, where he controls and lives out his fantasy stories. ‘Marwencol’ is a very moving film and a testament to the spirit of Mark Hogancamp to live life on his terms in spite of the ‘cards’ life has dealt him in his later years. The sommelier, while a trained expert in wine, could also claim good knowledge about the meager beer choices. Anyone can call themselves a ‘beer sommelier’ regardless of knowledge or experience. And while some will be highly skilled, the only way to demonstrate that objectively is through independent testing of knowledge and tasting ability. The Cicerone Certification Program offers that independent assessment and certification so that industry professionals— as well as consumers—can be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers. The testing process is rigid at the Certified and Master levels, a little less so for the Certified Beer Server which is an online test. The two higher certifications require a candidate to sit for an exam. At the Certified level, the exam is about four hours and starts with a written test of approximately 150 essay and short answer questions. Topics include everything from the proper method of cleaning draft lines to hop growing countries to breaking down a food recipe in order to determine the best beer to pair with it. After the written exam comes a fairly intense sensory exam designed to measure the candidates’ ability to spot offflavors that would make a beer unacceptable to be served. Finally a demonstration is videotaped for grading. The demonstration is a hand on display of book knowledge that can be translated in to regular beer service. Are the tests difficult? In the time they have been offered, about 1500 people have passed

the Certified Beer Server, 175 the Certified Cicerone and only a small handful have achieved the Master title. The pass rate on the Certified exam is about 50 percent, less on the Master. Why does Ray Daniels get to determine the criteria for being a Cicerone? Well besides this being his concept, he may be one of the most qualified people in the world. Ray, a Chicago resident, has traveled the world judging beer, launched festivals and written four books. His book, Designing Great Beers, is a must have for anybody considering home brewing. But the brewing and hospitality industries could just as well have decided that the Cicerone program was meaningless or unnecessary. They did no such thing. Breweries and distributorships have lined up to take the exam, and restaurants, like the beerheavy and always-packed The Publican in Chicago, began mandating that front-of-house employees become certified. As craft beer has inched toward maturity — more breweries, more quality, more distribution and more sales — Daniels correctly guessed that there would be a hunger for standards in beer service, handling and presentation. “Ray had the credibility to do this,” said Paul Gatza, director of the Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association, where Daniels worked before launching the program. “He had a network of connections that knew him and

Proper service of good beer is Daniels’ goal, stated simply, “I never again want to be served a bad beer in a bar”. To that end, Daniels believes deeply in the “beer clean” glass, which must be rinsed prior to serving to remove traces of sanitizer. Many bartenders give beers “a classic German pour,”— straight down the middle, left to settle, then topped off. This is not Daniels’ pouring ideal. His oft-repeated motto is, “It takes two hands to pour a beer,” and his method is this: hold the glass at a 45 degree angle, pour along the side, then about halfway through, tilt both glass and bottle vertical. You want an inch or so of head. If you want to be a Cicerone, you’d better know that.

“The biggest problem in American drinking habits is that we don’t drink beer all week, and then we have five on Friday night,” he said. “Better we should make alcohol a part of the diet regularly and moderately, not something for bingeing.” Daniels is constantly looking to educate and build his program. After being poured a particularly bad looking beer, he will take a photo of it for teaching purposes. For example a beer with no head and small bubbles on the side of the glass will get a picture as a good lesson of what not to do. This is an indication that the glass is not “beer clean” and sadly, according to Daniels, this is how most American bars pour beer. So, what does a Cicerone need to know? The city of Chicago has developed a unique tradition of coloring the downtown river water green. It started in 1962 when 100 pounds of green vegetable dye were added to its river, enough to keep it green for a week. The tradition has continued till date. St. Patrick’s Day or “Paddy’s Day” commemorates the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. A festive day for the Irish people, St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland and also celebrated with much enthusiasm in places such as Canada, Great Britain, Australia, the United States and New Zealand. IRELAND St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is more of a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. With grand parades, community feasts, charity show, the mass, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated and truly honored throughout Ireland. Parades, shamrocks, and green beer are provided primarily for tourists. In fact, it has turned out to be one of the most celebrated events in Ireland and a major tourist attraction. The Peoria restaurant will serve green Chile stew, green Chile Cheeseburgers and small green goddess salads for only $5 each. On the drink side, Irish Car Bombs will be available for $6, Irish whiskey for $5 and green beers for only $2. “We saw St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity to have some fun with the menu and offer an Arizona take on what’s considered an Irish holiday,” said Managing Partner Christina Ricke of the St. Patrick’s Day menu. Since opening in January, Blu Agave has been a runaway hit with north Peoria residents. The restaurant’s menu was crafted by Chef Charles Wade Schwerd to

reflect the flavors and tastes of the Arizona cuisine he’s enjoyed all his life. Dishes like the Argentinean Gaucho steak, with chimichurri sauce, queso fresco mashed potatoes and caramelized onions, have quickly become house favorites.

“We get rave reviews for our food on St. Patrick’s Day,” said British Open Pub owner Gregg Troilo. “When you combine the food with our drink specials and the pipe and drum band, you could close your eyes and swear you were in Ireland.”

The Glendale Pipe and Drum Corps will spend the day at the British Open Pub, playing four sets of their traditional Irish music for Bop patrons. Festive Dinner Recipes Embracing Everything Irish Limerick Ham Ingredients: 3-5 lb/ 1 1/2-2 kg ham cider to cover 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tsp mustard 20 whole cloves Preparation: Cover the ham with cold water and bring slowly to the boil. Throw out the water and replace with cider. Bring this just to the boil and lower the heat, keeping the liquid barely simmering for 20 minutes to the 1 lb/ 1/2 kg. Remove from the heat and allow to stand in the liquid for 30 minutes. Take out the ham, skin it and score the fat with a sharp knife in a diamond pattern. Stud with whole cloves. Mix the sugar and mustard and rub well into the surface of the ham. Bake in a pre-heated oven for a further 10 minutes to the 1 lb / 1/2 kg at gas mark 6, 400°F, 200°C.

Beef in Guinness Ingredients: 2 1/2 lb/ 1 kg shin of beef 2 large onions 6 medium carrots 2 tbsp seasoned flour a little fat or beef dripping 1/2 cup dry cider 1/2 pt/ 250 ml/ 1 cup Guinness with water sprig of parsley (serves four) Preparation: Cut the beef into chunks and peel and slice the onions and carrots. Toss the beef in the flour and brown quickly in hot fat. Remove the beef and fry the onions gently until transparent. Return the beef and add the carrots and the liquid. Bring just to the boil, reduce the heat to a very gentle simmer, cover closely and cook for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Check that the dish does not dry out, adding more liquid if necessary. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with plainly boiled potatoes.

Corned-Beef Dinner, Irish Style Ingredients: 3-4 lbs corned beef brisket 2 onions, sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 bay leaves 6 whole cloves 6 medium potatoes, pared 5 small carrots, pared 1 medium head of cabbage, cut in 6 wedges Preparation : Place corned beef in Dutch oven, and barely cover with hot water; add onion, garlic, cloves, and bay leaves. Cover and simmer (do not let boil)1 hour per pound of meat, or till fork tender. Remove meat from liquid; add potatoes and carrots. . Cover; bring to boiling and cook 10 minutes. Then add cabbage wedges; continue cooking 20 minutes longer or till vegetables are done. Spice Glaze:If you like, glaze the corned beef while vegetables cook. Spread fat side of meat lightly with prepared mustard. Then sprinkle with mixture of 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves. Place in shallow pan. Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees 15 to 20 minutes or till nicely glazed.

Irish Dumpling Stew Yield: 6 Servings Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 2 hours Stew Ingredients: 4 medium-sized Gold Potatoes or Butter Red Potatoes, whole 2 pounds stew meat, lamb or beef 1/2 cup flour 2 onions, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 2 tomatoes, peeled and chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 large bunch of mixed herbs (thyme, rosemary, sage), tied with a string 1 1/2 cups beef broth

Salt and/or Pepper for taste Preparation : Coat all sides of the meat pieces in flour. Heat oil in a skillet and brown the meat bits. Add onions and garlic. Saute. Toss the browned meat, onions and vegetables into a large cooking pot. Place herbs in the middle of the mixture. Cover with broth and cook for 2 hours over low temperature. While the stew is cooking, you can make the dumplings. Add the dumplings 20 minutes before stew is done. Add salt and pepper for taste. Dumplings Ingredients: 3/4 cup self raising flour 1 cup fresh bread crumbs 1 tablespoon mixed herbs 1/4 cup solid shortening 1 egg, beaten Broth or water Salt and pepper to taste Preparation : Mix the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Add shortening and egg. Whisk all the ingredients thoroughly. Divide mixture into small ball shapes. Roll these into even rounds with your floured hands. Place the molds in boiling water or broth. Cook for 15 minutes. Add to stew 20 minutes before stew is done.

Ingredients: 2 pounds pork tenderloin, or 6 to 8 boneless lean pork chops 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons hard cider (apple wine) or water stuffing (see below) salt and pepper Preparation : Make stuffing. Rub meat with salt, pepper and butter. Pour cider or water into 3 -quart casserole dish. Place meat along edges of dish. Place stuffing in center of pan. Cover loosely with foil and bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Ingredients: 4 1/2 cups Gold Potatoes or Butter Red Potatoes, coarsely mashed 1/4 cup butter 1 onion 2 large cooking apples, chopped 1 handful chopped fresh sage and thyme Salt and pepper Stuffing Preparation: To potatoes, add butter, onion, apples, herbs, salt and pepper.
