At Home at the Zoo iTheatre Collaborative Friday-Saturday 8:00pm Sunday 2:00pm A play fifty years in the making, American master Edward Albee has penned a prequel to his brilliant one act play, The Zoo Story. This full play is a meticulously calibrated and brutal look at the trapped lives of three human animals each in their own zoo. Act I opens with Peter and his wife, Ann, whose frank conversation (which begins with “We should talk.”) veers off into dangerously personal territory. It’s the kind of talk that can drive a husband out for a walk - to Central Park, for Act II, where Jerry, a desperate and lonely outcast, awaits Peter. At Home at the Zoo bares its teeth to threaten our delicately balanced world, growling at each passerby through the bars. This play contains mature language and themes.

By Nick Connell WARHOL: GOOD FOR THE JEWS? Actors Theatre/Herberger Theater Center Kudos to Josh Kornbluth for his one man monologue show… Warhol: Good for the Jews? This is a witty and sincere approach to a controversial exhibit by Andy Warhol from the 80’s. It becomes a subjective expression of Josh’s personal experience: his father, his Jewish history, the wisdom, humor and the irony he discovers. It’s a wonderfully written and performed story that should be a must see for everyone - given the content and questions Josh brings to the surface around some of the greatest minds of the past century. Did Warhol do it for the money? Is there really a God? What about religion? Why isn’t Dylan in the mix? What about those pesky Rabbi’s? What about peace in the holy land? What about all of us and the “Presence of the absence”? That’s the glue-with Warhol’s pictures - that makes this play work and stimulates the mind to think maybe “It ain’t necessarily so?”. Go see Josh and his play Warhol while you can. You’re bound to be entertained with wit and genius! Thru March 20th. Tickets at ActorsTheatrePhx.org

AVENUE Q Phoenix Theatre Center, Downtown Phoenix Are you ready for some laughs? I mean pure hilarity with a sarcasm that will make you cry? Then it’s time to visit the cast of characters living near Avenue Q at the Phoenix Theatre downtown. Oh this cast is darling and funny! It would be very hard to have such luck twice with the chemistry and fun these actors expressed with this original musical by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. Led by David Errigo Jr., Emily Mulligan-Ferry, Rose Bae, Yolanda London, Jenn Tabor, Adam Vargas and Princeton himself, Toby Yatso - this company of thespians lifted the gloomy veil with an enthusiasm that spilled right into the hearts of the Phoenix faithful. There’s a long list of hit songs that Brian, Kate Monster, Rod, Nicky, Trekkie Monster, Lucy, Christmas Eve, Gary Coleman and Princeton charmed us with including “It Sucks to Be Me”, “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist”, “The Internet Is For Porn”, “There is Life Outside Your Apartment”, and “For Now”. Catch the light rail and see Avenue Q soon - it’s pure enjoyment! Thru March 20th. Tickets at PhoenixTheatre.com. THE DROWSY CHAPERONE Arizona Broadway Dinner Theatre in Peoria There’s some stumbling going on in Peoria at the Arizona Broadway Theatre as their new comedy musical The DRowSY CHAPerONE opened last weekend. This ridiculously funny fantasy - from our “man in the chair” character - takes us round and round on a turntable of music, love scenes and marriages that is too cute! You’ll love the stereotypes written for big actors ready to “Show Off’ at a moment’s notice while we follow our wedding storyline to the alter of Busby Berkeley or Jane Goodall? Yes, there’s monkeys too, and a Broadway starlet, a debonair fiancée (who’s a Cory McCluskey lookalike), a producer, a Latin lover, some bumbling gangsters, and of course a tipsy chaperone! There’s no way to convey the “Toledo Surprises” that are waiting for you in this musical comedy. But you’ll be laughing as George, Robert, Mr. Feldzieg, Kitty, Adolpho, Janet, Trix, the gangsters and that ‘Drowsy Chaperone’ finally find their “I Do I Do in the Sky”. Just make sure you “Stumble Along” and get some great seats at ABT thru April 17th. One of the World’s Leading Young Exponents of Bharata Natyam – the Classical Dance of South India. Wednesday, March 23rd &

Thursday, March 24th at 7pm Mythili Prakash is recognized as one of the world’s leading young exponents of bharata natyam—the classical dance of South India. Her

inventive approach to classicism revitalizes Bharata Natyam and awakens the physicality, musicality, and expressive theatricality of the dance to create an exceptional style that is distinct and meaningful to audiences across the world. Bharata natyam is incomplete without Carnatic music, the South Indian classical form. Carnatic music is characterized by variations of raga (melody) and tala (rhythm). Prakash’s ensemble includes four virtuosic musicians who maintain a unique and diverse repertoire. Each composition has been created by revered poets whose works capture the depth and soulful combination of lyrics and melody.

The technical sophistication and intellectual brilliance of these four musicians is unsurpassed. Mythili Prakash is magnetic on stage; her works are compelling in the sensitive and emotion-filled expressive dance. Her command of the art form is evident whether you are an aficionado or new to Indian classical dance. In the elegant and sculpted chiseled lines of her dance, Prakash has perfected bharata natyam to a point in which its geometrical exactitude is an irrepressible force of precision and dynamism. Illuminating the art form from within, she uses traditional repertoire while

extending the technique to create new structures that connect her extraordinarily rich and intense style with a sharp contemporary intellect. For more information on Mythili Prakash, visit www.mythiliprakash. com Tickets available at www. themim.org

Bet You Didn’t Know! by Stan Robinson

Producers Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers are reportedly developing a film based around the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which they describe as a “four-quadrant, family-friendly film” much like ”Night at the Museum” and “Elf.” One potential concept sees the floats and balloons springing to life. Be among the first to get the latest ‘scoop’ from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com

Actor Michael Peña, relishes the diverse roles Interview by Stan Robinson In ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’, lawyer Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Con-

tinental lands the case of a lifetime when he defends a Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) accused of attempted murder. A vital clue to his case, Jesus Martinez (Michael Peña), who’s serving time for a crime he may not have committed… I started to take notice of Michael Peña’s pivotal story character roles in two of 2004’s Oscar® winning films ‘Crash’ and ‘Million Dollar Baby’. Those roles provide the ‘empathy’ factors to the story that links us as viewers to the movie. That trend continued in ‘World Trade Center’ (2006) as one of the police officers who went above and beyond the duty to rescue survivors. A favorite is the ‘green’ FBI Agent in ‘Shooter’ (2007) who helps clear Mark Wahlberg’s character of an attempt to assassinate the president, and, he is also starring in ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ which opened as the top box office movie last weekend! Michael Peña shares his career path thoughts… He’ll have two movies out at once, Stan: ‘Michael, you’re a busy guy, two movies out at once, much congrats! Michael: Yea Stan, I’m loving it! You know what, I like both of these movies ‘Lincoln Lawyer’ and I like ‘Battle Los Angeles’, so I’m stoked!’ Stan: ‘How did the role in ‘The Lincoln

Arizona no longer alien to ‘Paul’s’ Simon Pegg and Nick Frost Interview by Joseph J. Airdo While researching America’s top UFO hotspots for their new science-fiction comedy “Paul,” two Arizona cities popped up on Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s radar: Apache Junction and Camp Verde. So, naturally, the writers/actors worked the cities into “Paul’s” screenplay, having their characters plan to visit them on a pilgrimage through the country’s most significant extraterrestrial sites. Unfortunately for the Valley, said characters never quite make it to either city as they are forced to take a detour that is vital to the film’s plot. In “Paul,” Pegg and Frost play a pair of sci-fi geeks who meet an extraterrestrial, voiced by Seth Rogen, and, together with a kidnapped Christian played by Kristen Wigg, agree to help him flee from those who want him captured, including a government agent played by Jason Bateman.

The longest kiss in a movie is in Andy Warhol’s movie ‘Kiss’ (1963). Rufus Collins and Naomi Levine kissed for the entire 50 minutes of the movie!

Lawyer’ come to you?’ Michael: ‘ I golf a lot with executive producers like Tom Rosenberg, and Gary Lucchesi and I’ve golfed with them for a long time, we never talk about business, we’re too busy betting who’s doing lunch (laughing). In the course of a game, one of them casually mentions that ‘Hey I got this part for you and a script for you if you want to read it. I ask so who’s in it, and he answer’s McConaughey, I added ‘It’s been a while since he’s done a drama’ and I was eager to read it, so I did, and I liked the movie and I liked the part, which I think is important for me, I have to have both, I gotta like the movie and I’ve gotta like the part!’

However, Phoenicians feat not as Pegg and Frost had plenty of time to bandy about ideas for the movie’s sequel while visiting the Valley as part of “Paul’s” promotional press tour and Arizona made quite the impression on them.

“I think the deserts around Sedona could easily double for an alien planet,” says Frost, noting that he and Pegg drove across America to help prepare them to pen “Paul’s” screenplay. “Watching America drift by and watching it change geographically and evolve along the route... that was what we needed.”

Continued on Page 13...

“‘Shaun of the Dead’ was a story that ended,” Pegg explains. “‘Hot Fuzz’ was a story about how two guys become hot fuzz and to see them being hot fuzz would be less funny, I think. With ‘Paul,’ I think there could possibly be a sequel there.” Read more from Joseph J. Airdo’s interview with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost exclusively online at Examiner.com.

made. I was thinking about other scripts to write, I had just finished another adaptation and was thinking about other stories of my youth and Bob Stevenson’s version of Jane Eyre was one of my favorites and thought it would be a great adaptation. But it didn’t happen (with a chuckle); I got busy with ‘Sin Nombre’. While I was promoting ‘Sin Nombre’, I found out that the BBC had a ‘Jane’ on their slat and I wanted to find out what their take on it was! So I asked to read it, liked the script, and I asked to meet the producer and the screenwriter Moira Buffini! They liked me and my approach to the story, and, I liked them so I said ‘Let’s make this movie. That’s how it happened!’ Director Cary Fukunaga shares insight on the production schedule, and more in the full interview available at ScreenScene.org and Examiner.com

Director Cary Fukunaga delivers a stirring view of the Reviewers’ Roundup Charlotte Brontë classic novel Interview by Stan Robinson Based on the theme of the novel: after fleeing Thornfield House where she has obtained the position of governess, Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) realizes she must return and come to terms with the master of the house Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender) who’s harboring a terrible secret, while wrestling with secrets of her own of her childhood in an abusive orphanage and distant non-caring relatives. Screening ‘Jane Eyre’ on March 3rd, my intuitive instinct for those films that tell me ‘it’s an independent film gem’ were high. Director Cary Fukunaga’s film ‘Sin Nombre’, which won one of my three best foreign films of 2009, led me to ‘I have to have a conversation with him!’ Early box office grosses for last weekend with a limited opening, as it platforms out this weekend to national openings, were impressive. With just four screens in New York and Los Angeles, ‘Jane Eyre’ grossed almost $200,000 averaging close to $46,000 per theater which is by far the best per theater average of 2011 with a clear indication that there’s interest from those ‘specialty audiences’. Did director Cary Fukunaga find the project to direct or did it find him? Cary: I would say I found ‘Jane Eyre’, I was thinking about adapting the novel on my own while I was waiting for ‘Sin Nombre’ to get

‘Paul’ On a pilgrimage to America’s UFO heartland, two British sci-fi geeks (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) meet an extraterrestrial (Seth Rogen) and hatch a plan to help him return to his spaceship. ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ A lawyer (Matthew McConaughey) who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Continental lands the case of a lifetime when he defends a Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) accused of attempted murder. complex twists and turns nor Matthew McConaughey’s charming southern drawl can save this elementary effort.” Grade: D Stan: “Reminded of the genre of the Mike Hammer private eye films, ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ has plenty of plot twists and provides well defined characters as the story unfolds. A nice psychological drama that keeps one guessing ‘till the last clue is revealed.” Grade: C+

‘Limitless’ An unemployed writer (Bradley Cooper) rises to the top of the financial world after an experimental drug gives him extraordinary mental abilities. (PG-13 – 105 minutes) Joseph: “Director Neil Burger’s intensely innovative visual style, screenwriter Leslie Dixon’s clever Bret Easton Ellis-esque narration and Bradley Cooper’s simply spectacular performance combine to create one sharp psychological thriller.” Grade: B Stan: “Joining the ranks of what I’ve dubbed ‘Sci-Fi Mind Thrillers’, ‘Limitless’ presents an engaging visual view of the mentality for the ‘new’ represented by Bradley Cooper’s character, and the ‘old’ by Robert De Niro, as they face-off for dominance in the financial world. Grade: B

‘Strongman’ A man strong enough to bend a penny with just his fingers, Stanless Steel reaches middle age, career disappointments and difficult personal relationships that begin to test his strengths and force him to struggle with the weaknesses around him – including his own. (NR – 107 minutes) Joseph: “Filmmaker Zach Levy captures an incredible amount of humanity over the course of this exceptionally intimate documentary. It is a surprisingly sad story yet sometimes resembles an extremely well-conceived reality show.” Grade: C

Pegg echos Frost’s thoughts, adding that the two Brits were already well-read with respect to the genre so, rather than re-watching their favorite science-fiction flicks, they made learning about America a top priority. And “Paul” marks the first motion picture that Pegg and Frost believe warrants a sequel that would not be completely based on financial motivations.

Randy: “This documentary reminded me of the character in ‘The Wrestler’. It’s fascinating to watch real life people on screen, but our reality TV stars provide the much needed entertainment and craziness this non-fiction lacked.” Grade: C Stan: “Stories with a reflective theme as the central character copes with the reality that the best years of life are behind him, are always emotionally thought provoking. ‘Strongman’ aptly conveys that fact of life, that all of us will eventually face. Although there’s a ‘surreal’ flavor to the film, the messages are real enough.” Grade: C+

‘Jane Eyre’ After fleeing Thornfield House, governess Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) realizes she must return and come to terms with Edward Rochester’s (Michael Fassbender) terrible secret. (PG-13 – 118 minutes) Joseph: “This sleep-inducing drama may mark the first time in cinematic history that lazy high school students would prefer to read the book over watching the movie. Psst – there’s always Cliffs Notes.” Grade: F Stan: “This latest re-telling of the Charlotte Brontë classic story from English literature has less of the ‘horror’ element and more of the psychological drama, director Cary Fukunaga captures the flavor and aura of the time period. The scenes in the dark, drearily cold house on the estate are downright foreboding with only candlelight for the night scenes are eerily captivating.” Grade: B

‘AUTOMORPHOSIS’ looks into the minds and hearts of a delightful collection of eccentrics, visionaries, and just plain folks who have transformed their autos into artworks. ‘THE EXILES’ A chronicle of the rescue of oppressed intellectuals and artists from Europe before the outbreak of World War II. It studies the cultural and intellectual impact of this émigré population on American life. The auditor first checks whether the empty half is material and then designs the audit procedures to obtain sufficient evidence to conclude that the glass is indeed empty. NEW PRODUCTS HIT THE ARIZONA MARKET We have been so busy lately with Beer Weeks and beer festivals and all kinds of

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown” other stuff that we haven’t had a chance to update you on new products available in the market in a while. Heck Bell’s Hopslam came and went and we never got a chance to get the word out. So, let’s take a look at some of the new products, both regular and occasional that are new to Arizona so you can get out there and try them.

crowd pleasing Corona, Familiar comes in a bottle called a Caguama, which is a type of sea turtle. Once you see this roughly quart size bottle, you’ll see

where it gets its name. Used in Mexico as a bottle for the table to share during meals, it’s bound to catch on here as a great tailgate or party item to be shared. The other unique look to this bottle is the brown glass it is in. No clear bottles with Familiar. Anderson Valley has recently taken the “Anniversary” tag off of their Imperial IPA and now sells it year round in four packs of twelve ounce bottles. This was a very popular beer once a year and should be equally popular the rest of the year. Anderson Valley has also retooled the packaging on Brother David’s Tripel. You can find this in four packs as well. Look for it right next to the Imperial IPA. Also look for Boont Amber and Hop Ottin IPA in cans, along with a redesigned can for Summer Solstice.

If you go to Mexico and drink beer there, and chances are if you go, then you do, you are no doubt familiar with Victoria Beer. This Vienna Lager which has been brewed since 1865 is an enjoyable and refreshing beer that is perfect for just about any time. It has a great balance and is easy drinking. At 4% ABV it’s made to be a session beer. No question why it is the number one selling beer in Mexico. Look for Vicky in her signature yellow label.

Moylan’s Brewing nationally popular Scotch Ale has finally made it to Arizona. Considered one of their top beers by Brewster Denise Jones, this beer has just the right amount of heft, with a moderate smoky flavor. Certainly one of the best Scotch Ales made and certainly not for the faint of heart.

Another newcomer from south of the border is Corona Familiar. Still the same

North Coast’s Le Merle is due to make a re-appearance in Arizona. With the increased popularity of American made Saisons, this one which is described as a rustic ale, pale in color, inspired by the rich brewing traditions of the Flanders region with abundant hops and a Belgian

yeast strain which contribute exotic aromas of tropical fruit, is a winner. Not many American Saisons crack the 95 point barrier, but this one weighs in at 96 points making it one of the highest ranked beers of this style available in Arizona. Great Divide has been busy adding to their lineup of releases outside their home state of Colorado. Currently in the market is year round beer Hoss. This Rye Lager proved to be incredibly popular when it was released a couple of years ago as a seasonal, so it has cracked the lineup of core brands for this Denver brewery. Great Divide has been sending us some new seasonals as well. Belgica, their take on the Belgian IPA trend is in the market, as is Grand Cru, a big, balanced Belgian Strong Ale which at 11% is definitely a sipping beer. Additionally, there may still be some Smoked Baltic Porter floating around the market. If you haven’t tried that yet, seek it out. If you like the Yeti Imperial Stout, and the oak aged version of it, then you are in for a real treat. While we have seen the Chocolate and Espresso Oak Aged Yetis in the market before, they will now become regular releases as part of the Yeti seasonal release program. Also added to the mix will be the Belgian Yeti inspired by some of the wonderful Belgian Imperial Stouts such as Podge or Hercule.

been a favorite. Now, the Nitro version just provides a creamier version of the beer. Look for Nitro Milk Stout and Sawtooth side by side on finer tap lineups everywhere. Abita Brewing Company has slowly added to their Arizona lineup, first releasing Strawberry Harvest and Pecan Harvest. Last year they added Satsuma Harvest Wit to the Harvest collection and it will be back again. However, the most interesting thing coming from Abita this year will be their 25th Anniversary Beer. Vanilla Double Dog will be an Imperial version of Turbo Dog Brown Ale spiced up with a hint of Vanilla. This is slated to be a one-time production and it will go fast.

Ballast Point has been treating us well lately, first sending us plenty of bottles and kegs of Sculpin Imperial IPA. Now they have added to that with both Victory at Sea and Sea Monster. The latter having just made it to the shelves. We were also fortunate enough to see some limited kegs of Dorado Double IPA, Tongue Buckler Imperial Red and Barrel Aged Piper Down Scotch Ale during Beer Week and some of those may still be floating around waiting to be tapped. Look for more excitement from this San Diego brewery in the upcoming months. Wow, so many more than I expected. Let’s stop here and pick up next week with more new to Arizona products.

Kiley’s Grill will be hosting St. Patty’s Day with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Prostate On-Site Project. The Festival will include live music, beer tents, and much more. WHY: Prostate On-Site Project has two (2) prostate cancer mobile screening units that travel throughout the State of Arizona offering low or no cost prostate exams for the early detection of prostate cancer WHEN: Thursday, March 17th, 2011 – 8 am until 2 am WHERE: Kiley’s Grill, 2394 North Alma School Road, Chandler, Arizona 85224

For more information visit www.kileysgrill.com or contact Michael Vachon at (480) 245-6601, mvachon255@yahoo.com. Prostate On-Site Project’s goal to screen and educate all men and their families on the importance of early detection of prostate cancer especially men age 40 and over or have a history of prostate cancer in his family. They can do this by providing men throughout the State of Arizona with the opportunity by way of their mobile units, free PSA blood test (ProstateSpecific Antigen) and DRE (Digital Rectal Exams) and Testicular Exams. If prostate cancer can be detected early, the course of treatment is less evasive and can be curable. Statistics show that 1 in 5 men are likely to develop prostate cancer. In Arizona, more than 4,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, resulting in nearly 600 deaths. It is the most diagnosed cancer in Arizona after skin cancer and the second cause of cancer death in men. History of the Pub Murphy’s Law is owned and operated by Chandler local, Roger Baldwin. Roger opened Murphy’s Law in November of 2008. When selecting the location he felt this historic building in upcoming downtown Chandler would be perfect. The narrowness inside reminded them of all the east coast Irish pubs they loved. The feel they wanted, for the pub, was to be a fun, comfortable place for locals and

visitors to come to escape from their troubles and enjoy a wide selection of beers and great food. Roger traveled all over the country buying antiques and old photos to decorate and cover the four blank walls. The dollars were actually an accident. After Roger designed and decorated every part of Murphy’s Law a hole was noticed in the dry wall. It was decided to cover it with a dollar. This seemed to catch on very quickly with the guests, so Roger chose to make it for a good cause. The name derived from Roger’s background in law and all the things that can go wrong in life. Catch a Meal at Kona Grill

By Chef Rachel Albert

Looking for a casuallysophisticated environment and an eclectic menu suitable for a date, a party, a business lunch, or a gathering of family or friends? If you like fresh, made from scratch American and Asian-inspired authentic and fusion food and fresh fish, try Kona Grill. They have a friendly and attentive wait staff and they can satisfy your special needs if you have food allergies or intolerances. They have a gluten-free menu you can view online and receive when you dine in any of their restaurants. Omitting dairy from any order is no problem either. Besides soups, side salads, appetizers, main dish salads, and sushi they offer pizza, flat bread, sandwiches, a kids menu, beer, wine, sake, cocktails, and dessert (some of them gluten free!). I thought the portions of meat and vegetables for the main dish salad I tried were generous and the flavors, textures and value were great. If you’re a fan of Cobb Salad, try the Kona Chopped Salad (great), a bed of field greens topped with macadamia nut crusted chicken, sliced hard

boiled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, tomatoes and honey Dijon dressing. It usually comes with white cheddar cheese; I had them substitute goat cheese. The Sweet chiliGlazed Salmon Salad with Sesame Soy Dressing and Sushi Sampler deal (you must order before 1 pm for some of their lunch specials) also sounded tempting. For a more substantial meal, they offer 14 dinner entrees, including Miso-Sake Marinated Sea Bass, Korean BBQ Chicken, Big Island Meatloaf, and Hawaiin Ribeye, among others. You’ll find four Kona locations around the valley: Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall, City North, Santan Village, Chandler Fashion Center and locations in 15 states across the U.S. Hours of operation: Monday through Thursday, 11am to 10pm; Friday and Saturday 11am to 11pm; Sunday 11am to 9pm. You can make reservations on line or by phone. For more info visit www.konagrill.com Rachel Albert is a natural foods chef, cooking instructor, freelance food and health writer and author of The Ice Dream Cookbook: Dairy-Free Ice Cream Alternatives with Gluten-Free Cookies, Compotes & Sauces and co-author of the award-winning book, The Garden of Eating: A ProduceDominated Diet & Cookbook. LIVE! SECTION Huey Lewis and the News took a sold-out audience Back in Time last week as they hosted a music variety show filled with blues, rock, and soul at the Talking Stick Resort inside Casino Arizona. Opening with Heart of Rock & Roll, they followed with tracks from their 2010 Soulsville, along with an A capella version of 60 Minute Man. Finishing out the show with Heart and Soul, I Want a New Drug, Power of Love, a relatively mellow version of Do You Believe in Love, Back in Time, and Working for a Living, there were times that it looked more like a party than a concert; dancing erupted in the isles, and shouts of love and affection could be heard from men and women all over the audience. Looking amazingly fit, the only thing that gave any clues to Lewis’ longevity were a few wrinkles. He proved that his harmonica skills are still in check, while his band, including horns, keys, and backup singers, took the entire experience to a new level. Soulsville is available on Amazon, iTunes, and the band’s website, www.hueylewis. com.

Here’s The Story… Business Is Up While most companies have more than felt the brunt of one of the worst recessions since the great depression, Celebrity Theatre reports business is up. The city’s landmark entertainment venue is on track to host 50% more shows than in 2010 and just last month, had to turn customers away from the sold out Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith concert as well as the sold out Bill Maher show. “Things are definitely looking up,” comments Celebrity Theatre Talent Buyer and General Manager, Alycia Klein. “We’re able to cover all musical bases with a diverse array of acts like Pat Benatar on Apr. 2nd, Queen of Country Loretta Lynn on May 1st and classic rock’s Kansas on June 4th.”

25th, actor-comedian Mike Epps on July 2nd, pop and jazz singer Basia on Sept. 21st and 5-time Grammy award winner Wynonna on Nov. 3rd.” Klein, a 20 year veteran of Celebrity Theatre, has experienced the best and the worst of times associated with the popular Phoenix venue, from changes in ownership to artist cancellations due to Arizona’s immigration law SB1070. When asked what she attributes the facility’s success and longevity to, she replies “Its uniqueness in that it boasts the city’s only revolving stage and its intimacy.” The entire stage can turn through four complete revolutions at a speed of up to 0.5 rpm, thus allowing

everyone in the audience to see every part of the stage at some points during a performance. None of the 2650 seats in the theater is more than 70 feet from the stage. And the theater’s impressive stateof-the-art sound system adds to its acoustical excellence. Combine these elements with a variety of world-class entertainment and it’s easy to see why Celebrity Theatre is a multiple award winner of “Best Place To See A Show” by the Phoenix New Times. Built in 1963, the circular structure was originally intended to be a conference center, but was redesigned as a theater-in-the-round or arena theater. It was further renovated significantly in 1995. The

Back by popular demand, Klein just announced that Motor City Madman Ted Nugent makes a return visit on June 26th. Other noteworthy shows on this year’s plump roster of talent include Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Leon Russell on May 11th, R&B crooner Brian McKnight on May 12th, Chippendales male revue on June 17th, Men of Soul’s Jeffrey Osborn, Peabo Bryson and Freddie Jackson on June

stage is 30 feet in diameter and completely round, exposed to the audience on all sides. The theater is equipped with an orchestra pit and can be reconfigured as a proscenium stage if a reduced seating capacity is necessary. Celebrity Theatre has hosted many well-known artists over its 47-year history such as Don Rickles, Bill Cosby, Roger Daltrey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chris Rock, Matchbox 20, B.B. King and Etta James. For fight fans, the venue offers boxing matches and Rage in the Cage events as well. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.

Bob Marley will be paid tribute at this year’s One Love Peace Festival. KyMani Marley - the son of the legendary reggae artist, will be joined by artists including Busta Rhymes, Shaggy and Sean Paul to mark 30 years since the anniversary of the singer’s untimely death in 1981 at the age of just 36. The all-day event, which is to be held at London’s Wembley Arena on July 31, will “pay homage” to the musical legacy of the ‘No Woman, No Cry’ hitmaker with a whole host of Bob Marleythemed sets. Ky-Mani said: “I feel blessed to be part of The One Love Peace Festival. It is with great pride that I will pay homage to my father, Bob Marley, with some of his best-loved songs. The festival’s message of peace is a noble cause that I hold very dear to my heart and one that my father would have applauded.” For more information, visit www. originalonelove.com.

Dave Grohl never thought he could juggle having a family with his career. The Foo Fighter’s rocker, who has daughters Violet, four, and 22-month-old Harper with wife Jordyn - is grateful he is able to take time out from his career and take his kids on the road because he knows other people aren’t so lucky.

I just couldn’t see it happening while I was playing in a band and going on tour, being a working, travelling musician. Then it dawned on me that you can do both and fortunately, we are able to.
